Food utilization by larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda [J. E. Smith]) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), showed greater consumption of corn (Zea mays L.) than pinto bean diet, Tifton 10, or Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.). Transfer of larvae from diet to susceptible grasses such as corn, Tifton 10 or Coastal produced differences in growth rates as a result of food consumption rates. Transfer of larvae from diet to resistant grasses such as common centipedegrass (Eremochola ophiuroides [Munro] Hack) Tifton 292 bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass (Zoysia sp.) reduced larval growth as a result of low consumption rates and/or greater metabolic expenditures. Larvae initially fed Tifton 10, Coastal, or centipedegrass before feeding on corn grew significantly faster than when they fed continuously on corn.
Résumé Des chenilles de S. frugiperda ont consommé plus de maïs (Zea mays), que d'un régime à base de Phaseolus vulgaris de la variété Pinto, ou de Tifton 10, ou de Cynodon dactylon de la variété Coastal. Des chenilles, transférées du régime artificiel sur des plantes sensibles comme le maïs, le Tifton 10 ou le Coastal, ont présenté des taux de croissance différents provenant de modifications de leur consommation. Le transfert du régime à des plantes résistantes, telles que Eremochola ophiuroides, Tifton 292, C. dactylon et Zoysia sp., a entraîné une diminution de la croissance larvaire par suite d'une plus faible consommation et/ou de dépenses métaboliques plus élevées. Des chenilles ayant consommé du Tifton 10, du Coastal ou de l'E. ophiuroides avant de consommer du maïs, se sont développées significativement plus vite que celles qui s'étaient alimentées continuellement sur maïs.

Summary The findings reported here confirm our earlier results that the male game-tophyte of Antirrhinum may transmit plastids into the egg. Reciprocal crosses of green Sippe 50 with the plastom mutant prasinizans gave few variegated descendants. The results show that more chimeras appeared in the cross Sippe 50 xprasinizans than in the reciprocal cross. Paternal plastids of the type prasinizans or gelbgrüne prasinizans seem to be more successful in the egg cell and the developing embryo than plastids of Sippe 50 in the reciprocal cross. It was tried to increase the number of chimeras by cultivating the parent plants in chambers with the same climate but low (13–18°C) or high (25–30°C) temperatures during the whole period of flowering, pollination, fertilization and embryo development. No distinct increase of the number of variegated descendants was observed. Only the cross prasinizans x Sippe 50 in the chamber with low temperature gave more chimeras than the corresponding cross in the chamber with high temperature.

The carbohydrate-binding specificity ofPseudomonas aeruginosa lectin I (PA-I) in iodinated or biotinylated form was studied. A large number of glycosphingolipids, as well as some glycoproteins and neoglycoproteins were used as ligands. Also, inhibition by free saccharides of PA-I binding to glycosphingolipids was tested. This study provides a critical historical review and analysis of the variety of human expressions which have been erroneously labeled under the grandiose category mass hysteria. It is argued that Western science reductionist approaches to the classification of mass hysteria treat it as an entity to be discovered transculturally, and in their self-fulfilling search for universals systematically exclude what does not fit within the autonomous parameters of its Western-biased culture model, exemplifying what Kleinman (1977) terms a category fallacy. As a result of objectivist methodologies, the etiology of actions labeled as mass hysteria is typically viewed as deviant, irrational or abnormal behavior resulting from a malfunctioning proper social order. However, what constitutes the correct social order is a function of a researcher's historical sociocultural and/or scientific milieu. This study reviews the problem, advocating Geertz's (1973) culturally relativistic approach to understanding various cross-cultural behavior that is sensitive to and tolerant of the unique context and milieu of participants. Mass or epidemic hysteria is viewed as an invention of Western psychiatry and should be abandoned and replaced with the term collective exaggerated emotions. Instead of attempting to discover a neatly packaged, unitary external disease entity, the focus of a meaning-oriented approach emphasizes the deciphering of foreign realities, semantic networks and symbol systems.  相似文献

Growth rate estimates () of phytoplankton populations that were sampled from nitrogen-limited continuous cultures and then incubated for short durations in batch culture with added14C-HCO3 were significantly different than steady-state growth rates () for 3 of 5 marine phytoplankton species. Two diatoms,Thalassiosira weissflogii andChaetoceros simplex, displayed virtually identical growth rates (=) over a wide range of, whereas for a third diatom,Phaeodactylum tricornutum, was overestimated by an average of 40% compared to. In contrast, was underestimated by the14C technique for the two remaining species: up to 40% at a steady-state of 1.0 day–1 for the chlorophyteDunaliella tertiolecta and up to 100% at of 1.4 day–1 for the haptophytePavlova lutheri. For the latter two species the divergence between and appeared to increase with increasing steady-state. A simple model of labeled and total carbon flow between the aqueous phase and cellular biomass was constructed to demonstrate that respiration was negligible when=, but was significant when>. In the cases in which<, a rapid physiological alteration presumably took place once the steady state was disturbed and cells were placed in the incubation chambers, which perhaps was related to the nutritional state of the cultures at the time of sampling. Questions thus are raised regarding our ability to measure accurately primary productivity from shipboard experiments with confined samples of phytoplankton from nutrient-impoverished waters that probably are less hardy than the laboratory cultures used in these studies.  相似文献

In this paper we use a dynamical systems approach to prove the existence of a unique critical value c * of the speed c for which the degenerate density-dependent diffusion equation u ct = [D(u)u x ] x + g(u) has: 1. no travelling wave solutions for 0 < c < c *, 2. a travelling wave solution u(x, t) = (x - c * t) of sharp type satisfying (– ) = 1, () = 0 *; '(*–) = – c */D'(0), '(*+) = 0 and 3. a continuum of travelling wave solutions of monotone decreasing front type for each c > c *. Zusammenfassung Uferschwalben kehren aus den afrikanischen Winterquartieren in Trupps beiderlei Geschlechts zurück. Erste Beringungsergebnisse belegen, daß zunächst mehrjährige, vermutlich untereinander bekannte Vögel eintreffen, die den Brutplatz aus vergangenen Brutperioden her kennen. Die Masse der später ankommenden Vögel dürfte weitgehend aus einjährigen oder ortsfremden Uferschwalben bestehen, die sich größtenteils erst während der Paarbildung persönlich kennenlernen. Der anfängliche Schwarmzusammenhalt der nacheinander eintreffenden Trupps führt zur Bildung von Subkolonien, die für Brutplätze ab einer bestimmten Größenordnung typisch sind. Uferschwalben- gründen nacheinander mehrere Reviere, d. h. sie besetzen Steilwandbereiche, in denen sie ausschließlich mit den Füßen eine Röhre oder Mulde graben, singen und Bogenflüge starten. Bis auf singende oder bekannte werden Artgenossen im Revier geduldet. Uferschwalben- suchen besetzte Reviere auf. Ohne Röhrenbindung verhalten sie sich still und unauffällig, ihre Grabungsaktivitäten sind von untergeordneter Bedeutung. Die Bindung an ein bestimmtes Revier entwickelt sich individuell verschieden und entscheidet über den Abschluß des Röhrenbaues (Herstellung der Nistkammer). Reviere ohne dauerhafte -Bindung werden von den aufgegeben. Aktivitäten, die auf wachsende Revierbindung eines hindeuten, sind: häufige oder/und länger dauernde Aufenthalte des in einem besetzten Revier und sporadisches Mitgraben; aggressives Verhalten gegenüber Artgenossen (i. d. R. fremde ), die im Revier landen wollen; gemeinschaftlicher, leiser Gesang von und im Röhrenbereich. Aktivitäten, die für eine vollzogene Paarbildung sprechen, sind: Fertigstellen der Röhre durch Grabung der Nestkammer; längere gemeinsame Aufenthalte innerhalb und außerhalb der Röhre; Voranfliegen des beim Röhrenanflug; Übernachten von und in der Röhre; Nestbau; ausdauernde Verfolgungsflüge während der Kopulationsphase. Die Paarbildung ist demnach ein individueller Prozeß, bei dem die Aktivitäten der im Revier als Werbung, die der als Revierwahl interpretiert werden.
On pair-formation in the Sand Martin,Riparia riparia
Summary European Sand Martins arrive at their breeding sites in flocks of usually unmated and . Ringing results of a large population in NW-Germany and own observations indicate that the first flocks about a dozen individuals with an approximately balanced sex ratio appear at traditional breeding places and consist of older, experienced resident birds (presumably acquainted with one another). The birds arriving over the next several weeks are mainly first-year or non-resident individuals. The flocks arrive separately in areas with suitable sandcliffs, synchronize the pair-formation activities and avoid disturbances among paired and unpaired birds. This behaviour causes the formation of subcolonies, which are typical for all densely occupied breeding places. Each settles on a fixed area on the sandcliff (territory) in order to excavate a burrow, to sing the territory-song (fig. 2 b) and to perfor the territory-circle-flight (fig. 2 c, 4 a). Silent birds (normally ) are welcomed or tolerated by the resident . The sexes are monomorphic and therefore courtship displays of the are non-aggressive until establishment of pair-bonds. Only intruding singing or individually known neighbouring are driven away, usually at early stages of territory occupation. Unmated are normally shy and very sensitive to protracted disturbances. visit several occupied territories of the colony (fig. 1–3) in order to choose a burrow. leave territories which do not attract a . They settle new territories on the sandcliff, causing a surplus of burrows compared to breeding pairs in the colony. Summary The B factors of Schizophyllum commune are of 3 classes: The high recombining class I has 7 alleles and 7 alleles; the low recombining classes are class II with 7 allels and probably 2 alleles and class III with probably 2 (or also 2) alleles and 7 allels. A fourth hypothetical class (-) was not found and either does not exist or is indistinguishable from class III by the tests employed. The induction of synthesis of the secreted enzymes endo-1,4--xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) and -galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) in original and recombinant Penicillium canescens strains has been studied. In all producer strains, the synthesis of these enzymes was induced by arabinose and its metabolite arabitol. The two enzymes differed in the concentration of arabinose required for induction: the synthesis of -galactosidase was most pronounced at 1 mM, whereas maximum synthesis of endo-1,4--xylanase was observed at 5–10 mM. An increase in the number of endo-1,4--xylanase copies in the high-copy-number strain of the fungus suppressed the synthesis of -galactosidase; the synthesis of endo-1,4--xylanase in the high-copy-number recombinant producing -galactosidase was affected to a lesser extent. The amount of enzymes synthesized did not depend on the saccharide used as the sole source of carbon for growing the mycelium prior to its transfer to the inducer-containing medium.  相似文献

Pseudomonas maltophilia is an uncommon cause of hospital-acquired infection and is resistant to most of the antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of gram-negative infections. Susceptibility of 108 isolates ofP. maltophilia to ceftazidime, aztreonam, defpirome, gentamicin, imipenem, enoxacin, and ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid was determined by an agar dilution method. The isolates were in general resistant to the antibiotics. Imipenem and cefpirome were not active at clinically achievable levels. Of the isolates, 20% were susceptible to 16 g/ml ceftazidime, 53% were susceptible to 4 g/ml enoxacin, 10% were susceptible to 4 g/ml gentamicin, and 25% were susceptible to 64 g/ml ticarcillin plus 2 g/ml clavulanic acid.  相似文献

Summary The spontaneous swimming activity and oxygen consumption of juvenile roach (Rutilus rutilus (L.)), were monitored for 48–72 h at 8, 15 and 20°C and a photoperiod (L:D) of 11:13. At low levels of activity metabolic cost is constant and thus corresponds to the standard rate of metabolism (low cost activity). At higher levels of activity metabolic cost increases in proportion with the degree of activity. The slope for this high cost activity indicates an expenditure of 0.4–1.3 mol O2·g-1·h-1 per arbitrary activity unit at the three experimental temperatures. Extrapolation of this relationship to zero activity would underestimate the measured standard metabolic rate. High cost activity occurred in only one experiment out of three at 8°C, low cost activity hardly at all at 20°C, whereas at 15°C both forms of activity were present in five of the seven experiments conducted. Thus, not only the intensity but also the pattern of activity is affected by environmental temperature.  相似文献

Summary A mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell line E14 and early mouse embryos were stained with a panel of 15 monoclonal antibodies recognizing sialylated or potentially sialylated carbohydrate determinants, Sialyl Le-x and sialyl Le-a were detected on the pre-implantation embryo from the 8-cell stage, and sialyl Le-a weakly on undifferentiated ES cells. Changes in cell surface carbohydrates occurred after induction of ES cell differentiation with retinoic acid (RA) and dibutyryl cAMP. Qualitative analysis of the neutral glycolipids of untreated and RA-treated ES cells using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) revealed few differences between the two types of culture. The major gangliosides in both cultures were indicative of an active a ganglioside synthesis pathway. GD3, a precursor of the b synthesis pathway, previously reported to be characteristic of embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, was absent. RA-induced differentiation caused a shift in the spectrum to more complex gangliosides. Comparative computer-assisted analysis was used to study putative GlpR regulons responsible for metabolism of glycerol and glycerol-3-phosphate in genomes of -, -, and -proteobacteria. New palindromic GlpR-binding signals were identified in -proteobacteria, consensus sequences being TGTTCGATAACGAACA for Enterobacteriaceae, wTTTTCGTATACGAAAAw for Pseudomonadaceae, and AATGCTCGATCGAGCATT for Vibrionaceae. The signals in - and -proteobacteria were also identified: they contained 3–4 direct TTTCGTT repeats separated by 3–4 nucleotide pairs.  相似文献

Summary The seven possible primary trisomics of Petunia (2 n= 14) located in the progenies of triploid, hypertriploid and hypotriploid plants were distinguished from one another and from diploid on the basis of cytological and morphological criteria. They were provisionally named as Oval, Semi, Slender, Pseudonormal, Arrow, Narrow and Giant. In three of the trisomics, the extra chromosome was identified for the first time at pachytene stage. Postpachytene studies revealed no precise relationship between the length of extra chromosome and the frequency of multiple association.  相似文献

Screening studies with strict and facultative anaerobic bacteria showed that Clostridium app. and several other representatives of Bacillaceae and Enterobacteriaceae actively degraded -hexachlorocyclohexane (-HCH) under anaerobic conditions. Representatives of Lactobacillaceae and Propronibacterium were inactive. With 36Cl-labelled -HCH a nearly complete dechlorination was shown to occur in 4–6 days by Clostridium butyricum, C. pasteurianum and Citrobacter freundii, while other facultative anaerobic species were less active.Aerobically grown facultative anaerobes also dechlorinated actively -HCH during subsequent anaerobic incubation with glucose, pyruvate or formate as substrates. The -, - and -HCH isomers were also, but more slowly, dechlorinated (>>-HCH). All species active in anaerobic degradation of -HCH formed -tetrachlorocyclohexene (TCH) as the main intermediate metabolite and no -pentachlorocyclohexene (PCH) or other isomers of TCH or PCH have been found. Small amounts of tri- and tetrachlorinated benzenes have been found too. We have used restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and DNA sequencing to characterize two distinct DRB1 alleles expressed on DRw52 and DQw7-associated haplotypes but not readily defined by conventional DR serology. These two haplotypes, designated HLA-D HAG and PEV, react variably with DRw13(w6), DRw14(w6), and the more broad DR 3+6 antisera. Analysis of RFLP revealed that HLA-D HAG and PEV are associated with different DRw52 variants, and that HAG is indistinguishable from DRw18(3) haplotypes. Sequencing of the HAG and PEV DRB1 genes showed each to represent novel alleles. Nevertheless, these sequences show similarities with the other alleles of the DR5, w6, and w8 family. HAG (DRB1*1303) appears to have arisen either from two recombinational events involving at least three DRB1 sequences (DRB1*1101, DRB1*0803, DRB1*0401) or from a single recombinational event together with multiple point mutational events. PEV appears to represent a DRB1*1301-1302/DRB1*1101 recombinant allele, with recombination having occured in the region of bases 175 – 198. The results of this study suggest that the DRw52 family haplotypes is derived from a relatively restricted number of ancestral sequences, with diversity among DRB1 alleles within this family arising through gene conversion or recombination events.  相似文献

A case of cirrhotic liver harbouring three atypical macroregenerative nodules and an hepatocellular carcinoma was immunocytochemically investigated for the expression of VLA- 1, VLA-2 and VLA-5 integrins and for different extracellular matrix (ECM) components (collagen I, collagen IV, laminin, fibronectin and tenascin). In addition, the proliferative activity within the nodules was evaluated, using the MIB 1 monoclonal antibody (MAb). The cirrhotic liver disclosed a continuous staining pattern of the ECM proteins investigated, as well as a sinusoidal immunostaining of VLA-1, VLA-2 and VLA-5. The macroregenerative nodules showed a discontinued immunoreactivity for ECM proteins while maintaining a VLA-1 sinusoidal immunostaining, coupled with intercellular immunostaining. VLA-2 and VLA-5 expression was lacking. The growth fraction was low in both the above pathological conditions. The hepatocellular carcinoma was devoid of any ECM immunostaining. VLA-1 immunoreactivity exhibited a honeycomb pattern of staining, whereas VLA subunits were absent. MIB1 expression was high, being present in 30% of neoplastic nuclei. The genes were cloned for the two apoprotein subunits, and, of phycocyanin from the cyanobacterium Spirulina maxima(=Arthrospira maxima) strain F3. The - and -subunitgene-coding regions contain 489 bp and 519 bp,respectively. The -subunit gene is upstream from the -subunitgene,with a 111 -bp segment separating them. Similarities between the-subunits of S. maxima and seven othercyanobacteriawere between 63% and 99%, as were those between the -subunits. Zusammenfassung Mit simultanen Azokupplungsverfahren und 1-Naphthylglykosiden als Substraten werden Verteilung und Aktivität von -Glucuronidase, -Mannosidase und -Galactosidase bei Ratte, Maus und Meerschweinchen untersucht.Für die -Glucuronidase besteht das Inkubationsmedium aus 5–10 mg 1-Naphthyl-glucuronid (gelöst in 0.4 ml NN-Dimethylformamid) und 0.6 ml 2% Hexazonium-p-rosanilin in 9 ml 0.2 M Acetat-Puffer, pH 5; für die -Mannosidase und -Galactosidase aus der gleichen Menge 1-Naphthyl--mannosid bzw. --galactosid und p-Rosanilin in 9 ml 0.1 M CitratCitronensäure-Phosphatoder Acetat-Puffer, pH 5 bzw. 5.2. Die Spezifität der Nachweisreaktionen sichern qualitative und quantitative Hemmversuche mit verschiedenen 1–4-Lactonen und Galactose ab.Die -Glucuronidase kann bei der Ratte vor allem intralysosomal nachgewiesen werden, z.B. in Niere, Nebenhoden, Uterus, Samenblase, Darm und Respirationstrakt; Mäuseund Meerschweinchengewebe setzen 1-Naphthyl--glucuronid langsamer um. Für die -Mannosidase läßt sich in zahlreichen Organen auch histochemisch die lysosomale Lokalisation des Enzyms beweisen, wobei die Aktivität in Urogenitalsystem, Darm und Speicheldrüsen besonders hoch ist, und in der Mäuseniere geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede vorkommen. Erstmalig wird die intralysosomale Lokalisation der -Galactosidase gezeigt, die ubiquitär in teilweise hoher Aktivität anzutreffen ist. 6-Br-2-Naphthyl--galactosid eignet sich in Verbindung mit Fast Blue B nicht zur intralysosomalen Lokalisation der -Galaotosidase.Fluorometrische Messungen aller 3 Glykosidasen mit dem entsprechenden 1-Naphthylglykosid ergeben nach Fixation in Formol oder Glutaraldehyd Hemmraten zwischen 90 und 98 %; anschließendes Waschen in Zuckerlösung verdoppelt oder verdreifacht die Restaktivität.
On the histochemical demonstration of -glucuronidase, -mannosidase and -galactosidase using 1-naphthyl glycosides
Summary By means of simultaneous azo coupling using 1-naphthyl glycosides as substrates the distribution and activity of -glucuronidase, -mannosidase and -galactosidase have been investigated in rats, mice and guinea-pigs.For -glucuronidase the incubation medium consists of 5–10 mg 1-naphthyl--glucuronide (dissolved in 0.4 ml NN-dimethyl formamide) and 0.6 ml 2% hexazonium-p-rosaniline in 9 ml 0.2 M acetate buffer, pH 5; for -mannosidase and -galactosidase of the same quantities of 1-naphthyl--mannoside and -galactoside respectively and p-rosaniline in 9 ml 0.1 M citrate, citric acid-phosphate or acetate buffer, pH 5. Qualitative and quantitative inhibition tests using various 1–4 lactones and galactose prove the reaction specifity of the methods presented here. -Glucuronidase can be detected especially in lysosomes of rat organs, e.g. kidney, epididymis, uterus, vesicular gland, intestine and respiratory tract; tissues from mice and guineapigs exhibit a slower splitting rate for 1-naphthyl glucuronide. As to -mannosidase its lysosomal localization becomes apparent in many organs also by means of histochemistry. The urogenital system, intestine and the salivary glands belong to the structures with the highest amount of -mannosidase, and in the mouse kidney sex differences occur. For the first time -galactosidase can be demonstrated unequivocally in the lysosomes of rat, mouse and guineapig tissues in which this enzyme displays a high overall activity. 6-Br-2-Naphthyl--galactoside and Fast Blue B for postcoupling are not able to detect the lysosomal localization of -galactosidase.Fluorometric measurements of these 3 glycosidases by means of the corresponding 1-naphthyl glycoside reveal inhibition rates between 90 and 98% following fixation in formol or glutaraldehyde. Washing in sugar solution raises enzyme activity two or three times.

Zusammenfassung Fetale menschliche Pankreaszellen bilden sowohl spontan auf zuerst gewachsenem Zellrasen (self-aggregation) als auch in Rollröhrchen (48 rph) (rotation-mediated-aggregation) histotypische Aggregate, die A- und B-Zellen enthalten. In der Nährlösung dieser 6–17 Tage lang gewachsenen Gewebestückchen konnte, Insulin (=IRI=immunoreactive-insulin) nachgewiesen werden.

Summary Fetal Pancreas cells of man, whether in self-aggregation or rotation-mediated-aggregation, form spontaneously histotypical aggregates containing A- and B-cells. It is possible by means of an immunological method to determine insulin (=IRI=immuno-reactive-insulin) in the nutrient medium of these 6 to 17 days old tissue aggregates.
