Sexual polymorphism was studied in the shrub Gnidia wikstroemiana (Thunb.) Meisn. from the semiarid Nama Karoo Biome, South Africa. The populations comprised plants bearing either female flowers, or hermaphrodite flowers with variable female function. In two populations, female plants accounted for 36–37% of the flowering plants. Female flowers were smaller and their stamens were reduced to staminodes, but their styles were significantly longer than those of hermaphrodite flowers. Energy investment in flowers and fruits for females and hermaphrodites was measured using bomb calorimetry. Females produce a greater number of less costly flowers than hermaphrodites, and invest less energy per unit in production of flowers and inflorescences. In contrast, females invest more energy per unit in production of fruits and infructescences than hermaphrodites. Females overall invest 7.3% more energy in reproduction than hermaphrodites. Female flowers were obligate out-crossers (xenogamous), with 35% of nonmanipulated, open-pollinated flowers setting fruit, comparable with fruit set among selfed hermaphrodite flowers. The breeding strategy of G. wikstroemiana most closely resembles gynodioecy. This is the first report of sexual dimorphism in Gnidia L. and sub-Saharan Thymelaeaceae.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 152 , 219–233.  相似文献

The study aims to investigate the effect of foliar spray with three plant growth regulators (PGRs) p-Chlorophenoxyacetic acid (CPA) at 20 and 40 ppm; Gibberellic acid (GA3) at 20 and 30 ppm, 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at 10 and 20 ppm on the response of fruit set, yield, and fruit quality of some hot pepper cultivars (Chillina, Parbirian, Shampion, and Hyffa) grown in sandy soil under plastic tunnels as compared to the control. Spraying Chillina cultivar GA3 at 30 ppm significantly increased the number of fruits/ plant and fruit set (%), yield/plant, and total yield/fad. In addition, the contents of TSS and Vit C, furthermore, maximum capsaicin content were observed in chili fruits in both seasons. However, the interaction between Chillina cultivar and spraying with GA3 at 20 ppm ranked second in yield and quality. The interaction between Parbirian cultivars and spraying with GA3 at 20 or 30 ppm increased the number of flowers/plants in both seasons. On the other hand, the interaction between Shampion cultivar and spraying with tap water (control) gave the lowest values of the number of flowers/ plants, the number of fruits/ plant and fruit set (%), yield, and its components, and fruit quality in both seasons.  相似文献

Flower-feeding insects may influence the reproductive behavior of their host plant. In plants with labile sex expression, the ratio of maternal to paternal investment may change in response to damage, an effect that goes beyond the direct reduction of plant gametes. We examined the effects of floral herbivory by the beetle Meligethes rufimanus (Nitidulidae) on the ratio of hermaphroditic flowers to male flowers in an andromonoecious shrub, Isomeris arborea (Capparaceae) in southern California. Plants exposed to herbivory had a greater rate of flower bud abortion than those protected from herbivory. Exposed plants produced a greater proportion of hermaphroditic flowers to male flowers, although damaged inflorescences still produced fewer fruit. An additional manipulative experiment showed that the removal of pistils on inflorescences led to an increase in the proportion of hermaphroditic flowers. This suggests that the presence of fruit may lead to pistil suppression in developing flowers. Adaptive responses to herbivory which favor andromonoecy thus include the continued production of hermaphroditic flowers when floral damage is high (and hence low fruit set), and a switch to male flower production when floral damage is low (and fruit production increases). The consequences of an altered six ratio induced by insect herbivores may lead to indirect effects on both the male and female reproductive success of this plant.  相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. is a commercially important plant with biodiesel and medicinal potential. It is a monoecious plant with staminate and pistillate flowers in same inflorescence with number of staminate flowers being higher than pistillate ones resulting in very low fruit yield. Altering sex ratio to increase the number of female flowers would lead to better yield. Phytohormones are most important factors known to alter sex ratio in plants. The mechanism by which phytohormones alter sex ratio differs in different plant species. Among phytohormones, GA plays an important role in sex alteration. In this study, we report the effect of exogenous application of GA on sex modification in J. curcas. There was considerable increase in number of female flowers by application of GA. At lower concentrations (10 and 100 ppm), increase in number of female flowers and fruit yield was proportionate to the concentration of hormone used but at higher concentration (1,000 ppm) though there was an increase in number of female flowers, fruit yield decreased. This was due to an increased peduncle length and enhanced cell death as a consequence of endogenous release of hydrogen peroxide in response to increased GA, resulting in withering of fruits.  相似文献

I describe temporal patterns of seed production in the andromonoecious lily Zigadenus particulatus. Fruit set per flower and seed set per fruit declined through time within plants. Hand pollination experiments showed that this was not due to increasing pollen limitation. Nutrient supplementation had little effect on seed output, but leaf clipping reduced seed production, especially in late-blooming flowers, and removal of early-blooming flowers increased seed set by later flowers. Thus, the temporal pattern of seed output was due to declining availability of photosynthates. Plants with larger bulbs produced larger inflorescences, a greater proportion of hermaphrodite flowers, more fruits per hermaphrodite flower, and more seeds per fruit, but lost a greater fraction of their initial bulb mass as a consequence of fruiting. After controlling for the effects of bulb mass, plants with larger inflorescences produced a greater proportion of male flowers, and plants with more hermaphrodite flowers produced fewer fruits per hermaphrodite flower and fewer seeds per fruit. Thus, the female fitness gain curve was decelerating. The temporal decline in seed output provides a partial explanation for the parallel decline in allocation to pistils. However, a complete explanation for the pattern of gamete packaging requires an understanding of factors controlling male, as well as female, fitness.  相似文献

The distribution area, phenology, sex polymorphism, floral characteristics and breeding system of Silene stockenii (Caryophyllaceae), a narrowly endemic annual species of southern Spain, were studied. Only five populations were found in a total area of 2 ha. Silene stockenii is a gynodioecious species with fully female, fully hermaphrodite and intermediate plants bearing hermaphrodite, male-sterile, and partially male-sterile flowers. Male-sterile flowers are typically smaller than hermaphrodites. Nectar production was significantly higher in hermaphrodite plants and during the female phase of hermaphrodite flowers. The red flowers appear during the spring (March-May) and are pollinated by long-tongued Bombyliidae. Hand pollinations revealed that the species is self-compatible; however, natural self-pollination is rare due to marked protandry. Hand pollination significantly increased the number of seeds per fruit and seed set, indicating limited pollination in the field. In controlled pollinations female plants of S. stockenii produced higher seed set than hermaphrodite plants, but in freely pollinated plants fruit set and seed production was similar in both morphs, indicating that pollinators do not discriminate in favour of hermaphrodite plants.  相似文献

Gibberellic acid (GA,), chlorflurenol and ethrel were applied at different concentrations to either male or female trees of Myrica esculenta. GA3 induced intersexual flowers both on the male and female trees whereas chlorflurenol and ethrel induced similar (intersexual) flowers but only on the male plants. When GA3 was applied in combination with chlorflurenol, fewer intersexual inflorescences appeared on the male plants along with a significant decline in the number of flowers per inflorescence. In combination, chlorflurenol and ethrel induced copious female and intersexual inflorescences per male plant, especially when two successive treatments of 100 mg/I of chlorflurenol and 1920 mg/l of ethrel were applied. The induced female inflorescences later bore fruits.  相似文献

In protogynous plants, female flowers of early blooming plants are at a reproductive disadvantage because they cannot set fruit due to the lack of available pollen. To study this phenomenon, gender expression of the monoecious herb Sagittaria trifolia was investigated over the entire flowering season in two field and two cultivated populations in Hubei and Hunan Provinces, China. In racemes of S. trifolia, flowers open sequentially from bottom to top, with female flowers opening first followed by male flowers. This creates a temporal separation of sexes in the species. Under field conditions small plants are often male, with production of both male and female flowers increasing with plant size. Femaleness increased among sequential inflorescences since female flower production increased whereas male flower production did not. Seed production was greater in large inflorescences because they contain more female flowers, and the number of ovules increased in female flowers at basal positions within the raceme. A consistent pattern of high seed set was observed in flowers from both field and cultivated populations. About 1 % of unfertilized ovules resulted from no pollination and 2 % of the seeds produced were only partly developed due to resource limitation. In the first inflorescence of the six experimental populations, 6.7-40.0 % of individuals produced only male flowers, and female flowers of 1.9-6.5 % individuals were aborted. The occurrence of male flowers in early blooming inflorescences could be an adaptive strategy to conserve resources and enhance pollination of female flowers in protogynous S. trifolia.  相似文献

Stem elongation growth in a slender line of Pisum sativum L. was much greater than in its two dwarf parental lines due to a greater rate of production of longer internodes. The cellular basis of the greater length of slender internodes was tissue specific. In the epidermis, greater cell length primarily accounted for the longer internodes of the slender plants, but in the outer cortex, greater cell number was the more important factor. The soluble and salt-extractable peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) activities of expanding internodes were much lower in slender plants than in dwarf plants. The proportional effects of ethylene treatment on epicotyl length, diameter and orientation were similar in etiolated slender and dwarf seedlings.  相似文献

Stein , Diana B. (U. Montana, Missoula.) The developmental morphology of Nicotiana tabacum ‘White Burley’ as influenced by virus infection and gibberellic acid. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(5): 437–443. Illus. 1962.—‘White Burley’ tobacco with Severe Etch Virus (SEV) displayed a reduction of plant height which was overcome to a limited degree by spraying with gibberellic acid (GA). Spraying with GA, while hastening maturity in terms of earlier elongation and flowering, also prolonged the life of treated plants. Infection with SEV caused an increased rate of leaf production, and since flowering was also delayed, the greater number of leaves is produced by infected plants. Spraying with GA also increased the rate of leaf production but did not increase the final number of leaves produced. All groups except the unsprayed virus-infected plants showed a spurt in leaf production just prior to flowering. The pattern of internode elongation was obtained by the periodic measurement of individual internodes. In general, this pattern reflected the stunting properties of the virus and the growth-promoting properties of the GA. Internodes which were mature at time of spraying with GA were not affected. Infection with virus generally delayed elongation and shifted the internode pattern. Infection with SEV tended to reduce the size of leaves already present prior to inoculation, but some leaves produced after infection were actually 1arger than the same leaves on the controls. Spraying a healthy plant with GA made older leaves longer and wider, while less mature leaves at time of treatment tended to be longer and narrower. Spraying with GA reversed the reduction in size caused by the virus only if the leaf was a very young primordium or was formed during the course of treatment with GA.  相似文献

A dwarf mutant of Senecio vulgaris L. induced by gamma radiation, which differs from the wild-type by a single recessive gene, grew as tall as the wild-type plant, and almost five times astall as dwarf control plants when treated at weekly intervalsfrom the seedling stage with 10 p.p.m. gibberellic acid. Thewild-type groundsel responded only slightly to similar treatment. Some evidence was obtained that the response to GA was relativilygreater when plants were grown during the late autumn. Dwarfnessin the mutant is due to fewer as well as to shorter internodes;the rate of leaf initiation is reduced, but the onset of thereproductive phase and the duration of the life-cycle are notaffected by the mutation. Gibberellic acid leads to a conspicuouselongation of the internodes intreated dwarf plants, but notalways to a significant increase in their number. An increasein the dry weight of treated plants was observed, and this wasshown to be due to an increase in photosynthetic area and notto increased photosynthetic efficiency. Comparative observationsof shoot morphogenesis in wild-type and dwarf groundsel. andin dwarf treated with gibberellic acid, have shown that thetype of shoot development induced by gibberellic acid in dwarfplants does not correspond exactly to the normal mode of developmentin wild-type plants. Increased mitotic activity in the subapicaltissue of the mutant following gibberellic acid treatment resultedin greater and earlier elongation of the internodes. However, the typical form and dimensions of the wild-type plant werenot wholly restored.  相似文献

Gibberellic acid (GA) induced extension of green pea-stem sectionsin light only if an auxin was also present. Of the auxins tested3-indolylacetic acid, 2-methyl-4-chloro-phenoxyacetic acid,2: 4-dichloro-phenoxyacetic acid and I-naphthylacetic acid wereeffective in increasing extension of sections and in elicit-inga response to GA. Excised internodes from plants pre-treatedwith GA extended appreciably faster in vitro than those fromuntreated plants only if an auxin was supplied in the incubationmedium. This and other evidence suggests that in the intactplant GA elicits a growth-response only in the presence of auxin.By comparing growth-rates of excised internodes in vitro andof intact internodes in vivo under comparable conditions, usinguntreated plants and plants pre-treated with GA, evidence hasbeen obtained that in untreated plants growth-rate is somehowlimited to a level below that made potentially possible by theendogenous auxin supply; treatment with GA appears to releasethe plant from this state of inhibition. Growth of intact peainternodes is considered to be regulated by a three-factor system, consisting of auxin, an inhibitory system, and a hormone withphysiological properties similar to those of GA.  相似文献

By definition, the floral morphs of distylous plants differ in floral architecture. Yet, because cross-pollination is necessary for reproductive success in both morphs, they should not differ in attributes that contribute to attracting and rewarding floral visitors. Floral and vegetative attributes that function in distylous polymorphism in hummingbird-pollinated Palicourea padifolia (Rubiaceae) and the responses of pollinators and insect herbivores to the resources offered by both morphs were investigated. The performance of each morph along multiple stages of the reproductive cycle, from inflorescence and nectar production to fruit production, was surveyed, and pollinator behavior and nectar standing crops were then observed. Costs associated with such attractiveness were also evaluated in terms of herbivore attack and of plant reproductive fitness (female function) as a function of leaf herbivory. The number of inflorescences, floral buds, open flowers, and ripe fruits offered by either floral morph were similar, but short-styled plants almost doubled the number of developing fruits of long-styled plants. Long-styled flowers produced higher nectar volumes and accumulated more nectar over time than short-styled flowers. Measures of nectar standing crop and data on pollinator behavior suggest that hummingbirds respond to this morph-specific scheduling of nectar production. Lastly, long-styled plants suffered a higher herbivore attack and lost more leaf area over time than those with short-styled flowers. Herbivory was negatively correlated with fruit number and fruit mass, and long-styled plants set significantly less fruit mass than short-styled plants. The results suggest that pollinators and herbivores may exert selective pressures on floral and vegetative traits that could also influence gender function.  相似文献

Exogenous gibberellin (GA) and auxin (indoleacetic acid [IAA]) strongly stimulated stem elongation in dwarf GA1-deficient le mutants of light-grown pea (Pisum sativum L.): IAA elicited a sharp increase in growth rate after 20 min followed by a slow decline; the GA response had a longer lag (3 h) and growth increased gradually with time. These responses were additive. The effect of GA was mainly in internodes less than 25% expanded, whereas that of IAA was in the older, elongating internodes. IAA stimulated growth by cell extension; GA stimulated growth by an increase in cell length and cell number. Dwarf lkb GA-response-mutant plants elongated poorly in response to GA (accounted for by an increase in cell number) but were very responsive to IAA. GA produced a substantial elongation in lkb plants only in the presence of IAA. Because lkb plants contain low levels of IAA, growth suppression in dwarf lkb mutants seems to be due to a deficiency in endogenous auxin. GA may enhance the auxin induction of cell elongation but cannot promote elongation in the absence of auxin. The effect of GA may, in part, be mediated by auxin. Auxin and GA control separate processes that together contribute to stem elongation. A deficiency in either leads to a dwarfed phenotype.  相似文献

Deceptive orchids are generally characterized by low levels of fruit set; however, there may be substantial variations in fruit set between sites and years. Within a single population, individual plants may also differ greatly in their reproductive output as a result of differences in inflorescence size or local density. In this study, we determined flower and fruit production over 5 years in two populations of the food-deceptive orchid, Orchis purpurea . All plants were monitored annually for survival and flowering at each site to determine whether flowering and fruiting induced costs. The number of flowers per inflorescence varied considerably from year to year (min: 36.6, max: 49.5). Average fruit set was low (7%) and varied considerably among years and populations. A considerable proportion of plants also failed to set any fruit. However, the probability of producing at least one fruit was not affected by inflorescence size or local density. The number of fruits was significantly related to inflorescence size, but proportional fruit set was not. Local density also did not affect the number of fruits, nor proportional fruit set. There was also no evidence that plants with large inflorescence size or high fruiting success had a larger probability of remaining vegetative the year after flowering than plants with small inflorescence size or low fruiting success. Our results suggest that pollinator-mediated selective forces on inflorescence size through female reproductive success alone are weak, most likely because of the low overall level of visitation and the resulting uncertainty of pollination at the individual level. Our results further demonstrate that investigation of patterns of fruit set over several years is needed to better understand the variability in female reproductive success that is typical of most plant–pollinator interactions.  相似文献

We studied the perennial vine Passiflora incarnata Linnaeus (Passifloraceae) in Alachua County, Florida, from May to August 1983 to determine the breeding system and investigate seasonal changes in phenotypic gender of individual plants. Passiflora incarnata is an obligate outcrosser, incapable of self-fertilization. The major pollinators were carpenter bees (Xylocopa sp.). The proportion of flowers setting fruit was not limited by pollinator service, but the weight of individual fruits and number of seeds/fruit was increased over naturally pollinated flowers by manually performing cross-pollination. Morphological differences in style position among flowers caused some flowers to function primarily as males and others to function as hermaphrodites. Although some of the flowers that functioned as males set fruit when manually cross-pollinated, the proportion of these male flowers capable of setting fruit was lower than the proportion of hermaphroditic flowers setting fruit when manually cross-pollinated. Further, some male flowers had atrophied ovary and styles and were completely incapable of setting fruit. Passiflora incarnata is thus functionally andromonoecious. The relative production of male versus hermaphroditic flowers varied among individuals and over the course of the flowering season. Unmanipulated plants in the population became increasingly male-biased in floral sex ratios as the reproductive season progressed. We attempted to modify phenotypic gender in experimental plants by limiting the ability of plants in some treatment groups to set fruit. Treatment groups significantly affected production of hermaphroditic flowers, but production of male flowers was not affected by treatment. Treatment did not significantly affect fruit weight, number of seeds per fruit or the percentage of hermaphroditic flowers that successfully matured fruit. These results suggest that andromonoecy in P. incarnata is a mechanism for adjusting allocation of reproductive effort to male and female function, and that maternal investment in this species is regulated primarily by varying production of hermaphroditic flowers.  相似文献
