Abstract

Effects of iodine on the growth of the « fronds » of Asparagopsis armata (Rhodophyceae, Bonnemaisoniales) in culture from spear bearing branches. – By adding doses of 5 μ moles per litre of iodide or iodate to a medium changed every six days, maximum growth for the « fronds » of Asparagopsis armata is obtained. Initial doses of iodide and iodate higher than 15 μ mole per litre inhibit the growth of this alga.  相似文献

High accumulation and selective delivery of boron into tumor tissues are the most important requirements to achieve efficient neutron capture therapy of cancers. We focused on liposomal boron delivery system to achieve a large amount of boron delivery to tumor. We succeeded in the synthesis of the double-tailed boron cluster lipids 4a–c and 5a–c, which has a B12H11S-moiety as a hydrophilic function, by S-alkylation of B12H11SH with bromoacetyl and chloroacetocarbamate derivatives of diacylglycerols. Size distribution of liposomes prepared from the boron cluster lipid 4b, dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine, polyethyleneglycol-conjugated distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine, and cholesterol was determined as 100 nm in diameter by an electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer. Calcein-encapsulation experiments revealed that these boronated liposomes are stable at 37 °C in fetal bovine serum solution for 24 h.  相似文献

BackgroundBoron is a trace element that plays an important role in numerous biological functions, including calcium metabolism, growth and maintenance of bone tissue. However, there are still no precise indications regarding a possible role of boron supplementation, and its amount of supplementation, to maintain bone health. So the aim of this narrative review was to consider the state of the art on the effectiveness of boron supplementation (alone or with other micronutrients) on growth and maintenance of bone in humans through control of calcium, vitamin D and sex steroid hormone metabolism in order to suggest a daily dosage of boron supplementation.Main findingsThis review included 11 eligible studies: 7 regarding the supplementation with boron alone and 4 regarding supplementation with boron and other nutrients. Despite the number of studies considered being low, the number of subjects studied is high (594) and the results are interesting.ConclusionsThe studies considered in this narrative review have evaluated the positive effectiveness on bone, in humans, through control of calcium, vitamin D and sex steroid hormone metabolism, considering a dietary supplementation of 3 mg/day of boron (alone or with other nutrients); this supplementation is demonstrably useful to support bone health (in order to prevent and maintain adequate bone mineral density), also considering the daily dose of 3 mg is much lower than the Upper Level indicated by EFSA in the daily dose of 10 mg.  相似文献

Although modular construction is considered the key to adaptive growth or growth‐form plasticity in sessile taxa (e.g., plants, seaweeds and colonial invertebrates), the serial expression of genes in morphogenesis may compromise its evolutionary potential if growth forms emerge as integrated wholes from module iteration. To explore the evolvability of growth form in the red seaweed, Asparagopsis armata, we estimated genetic variances, covariances, and cross‐environment correlations for principal components of growth‐form variation in contrasting light environments. We compared variance–covariance matrices across environments to test environmental effects on heritable variation and examined the potential for evolutionary change in the direction of plastic responses to light. Our results suggest that growth form in Asparagopsis may constitute only a single genetic entity whose plasticity affords only limited evolutionary potential. We argue that morphological integration arising from modular construction may constrain the evolvability of growth form in Asparagopsis, emphasizing the critical distinction between genetic and morphological modularity in this and other modular taxa.  相似文献

Boron and salinity effects on grafted and non-grafted melon plants   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Production of melon (Cucumis melo) may be limited by excesses of boron and salinity, and it was hypothesized that melon grafted onto Cucurbita rootstock would be more tolerant to excessive boron concentrations than non-grafted plants. The objectives of this study were (i) to determine the effects of salinity and excessive boron concentrations in irrigation water on growth and yields of grafted and non-grafted melon plants; and (ii) to study the interaction between the effects of salinity and boron on the uptake of macroelements and boron by grafted and non-grafted melon plants. The plants were grown in pots of Perlite in a greenhouse. The combined effects of boron and salinity on growth and yield were investigated for five boron concentrations, ranging from 0.2 to 10 mg L− 1, and two salinity levels, electrical conductivity (EC) 1.8 and 4.6 dS m− 1, in the irrigation water. With low salinity the boron concentrations in old leaves of non-grafted and grafted plants ranged from 249 to 2827 and from 171 to 1651 mg kg− 1 dry weight, respectively; with high salinity the corresponding concentrations ranged from 192 to 2221 and from 200 to 1263 mg kg− 1 dry weight, respectively. These results indicate that the grafted plants accumulated less boron than the non-grafted plants when they were exposed to similar boron concentrations, and that both plant types absorbed less boron when irrigated with the more saline irrigation water. It is suggested that: (i) the Cucurbita rootstock excluded some boron and that this, in turn, decreased the boron concentration in the grafted plants; and (ii) the low boron uptake under high-salinity irrigation was mainly a result of reduced transpiration of the plants. Significant negative linear regressions were found between fruit yield and leaf boron concentration for grafted plants, under both low and high salinity levels, and for non-grafted plants under low salinity. The fruit yield of the grafted plants was less affected by boron accumulation in the leaves than that of non-grafted plants. Increasing the water salinity decreased the sensitivity of both plant types to increases in leaf boron concentration, which indicates that the effects of boron and salinity on melon plants were not additive.  相似文献

Attempts were made to extend the storage life of seed potatoes by treating them with trace elements as antimicrobial and antisprouting agents. In tests to measure the growth of Fusarium oxysporum, and Erwinia carotovora pv. carotovora it was found to be decreased more by iron, copper and zinc than by boron, manganese and molybdenum. Dipping seed tubers in aqueous solutions of trace element salts decreased both sprouting and microbial spoilage during storage at ambient conditions. Field testing at the end of storage proved that treating seed potatoes with ferrous sulphate did not decrease the yield of tubers or increase their iron content. It is suggested that trace elements may be used to extend the storage life of seed potato tubers, in tropical conditions.  相似文献

The effects of rhizobacteria inoculation in modified MS medium containing boron (1 and 10 μM) on the biochemical components, physiological characteristics and mineral content of the in vitro banana plantlets were carried out. The presence of rhizobacteria in the medium supplemented with boron at two concentrations: 1 and 10 μM resulted in an improvement in growth and root biomass compared to the control (uninoculated). Rhizobacteria inoculation also produced an increase in protein, nitrate, soluble nitrogen and chlorophyll contents of the plantlets cultured in MS modified medium containing boron. An increase in percentage of growth (>295%) was shown when boron was applied into medium inoculated with Bacillus sphaericus UPMB10. The effectiveness of inoculation is increased when associated with boron, nitrogen or carbon into the medium. Thus, these bacterial strains could be used as a bioenhancer for growth of in vitro banana plantlets.  相似文献

We reported earlier that boron stimulates hypocotyl growth in several Arabidopsis ecotypes but not in the boron-deficient mutant bor1-1. Others have shown that boron influences the metabolism and transport of the plant hormone auxin. We investigated how boron, in interaction with light, influences Arabidopsis hypocotyl growth responses to the exogenous auxins 1-NAA, 2,4-D and IAA. In either light condition, 1-NAA similarly inhibited hypocotyl growth in bor1-1 and the corresponding WT (Col-0), while in both genotypes, boron did not essentially affect the extent of the inhibition. Whatever the light conditions and in the absence of boron, 2,4-D inhibited hypocotyl elongation in WT, while in BL seedlings, high responsiveness to 2,4-D vanished when boron was added to the culture medium. Hypocotyl of bor1-1 seedlings in all boron concentrations tested and grown in the dark or RL responded to the auxin similar to WT plants. In BL, the mutant hypocotyls retained full sensitivity to 2,4-D at 0.1 mM H3BO3 but lost that sensitivity by 2 mM. In both genotypes tested, in the dark or RL, IAA inhibited hypocotyl growth. Conversely, IAA stimulated hypocotyl elongation in both genotypes developed in BL at 0.1 mM H3BO3. That stimulation disappeared when the boron supply increased to 2 mM. Our results suggest that specifically in BL, boron reduces hypocotyl responsiveness to auxins 2,4-D or IAA via the functional transporter BOR1. Our results lead to a discussion of how BL and BOR1 influence the mechanisms of auxin transport into and out of the cell.  相似文献

Our study highlights the effect of the macroalgae Asparagopsis taxiformis on the feeding behaviour of the tropical surgeonfish Acanthurus triostegus. The presence of A. taxiformis chemical cues reduced A. triostegus feeding, suggesting that the presence of this algae could affect not only the survival of fish in the post-larval stage, but also alter the grazing pressure on coral reefs.  相似文献

【目的】微小杆菌属(Exiguobacterium)细菌广泛分布于海洋及非海洋环境中,具有多种代谢途径以适应复杂多样的生境。本研究从能量代谢途径角度出发,探究该属菌株对不同生境的适应能力。【方法】从美国国家生物科技数据中心(National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI)数据库中获取146个Exiguobacterium属菌株的基因组,查找并统计光营养、厌氧呼吸和底物代谢等多种能量代谢途径的关键蛋白或关键酶基因在各菌株基因组中的分布,包括光营养型的视紫红质基因、厌氧呼吸营养型的钼辅因子合成蛋白基因,以及底物代谢营养型中乙醛酸分流途径的异柠檬酸裂解酶及苹果酸合酶基因等。根据对应的氨基酸序列构建视紫红质、MoaC和异柠檬酸裂解酶的系统发育树,分析不同能量代谢途径在该属菌株进化过程中的保守性,推测其对于该属菌株的重要性。【结果】Exiguobacterium属中50%的种具有视紫红质基因,其中分离自非海洋生境的菌株更趋向于含有视紫红质基因。本研究所统计的全部非海洋生境菌株中,含有视紫红质基因的菌株占比约为70%,而在海洋生境菌株中该比例...  相似文献

Boron application at proper concentration is necessary to enhance the leaf gas exchange, physiological growth, reproductive development and nutritional improvement of crops. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to study the effects of boron to evaluate the effect on the leaf gas exchange, reproductive development, physiological and nutritional changes of peanut. Treatments comprised six levels of boron (B), viz., B1 (0?ppm), B2 (0.5?ppm), B3 (1?ppm), B4 (2?ppm), B5 (4?ppm) and B6 (8?ppm). Results revealed that the vegetative growth, physiological growth parameters, leaf gas exchange, reproductive characters, peg strength, shelling (%) and nutritional elements were increased for boron application. Some vegetative, physiological and reproductive traits are positively correlated with each other. Thus, this finding showed that boron can be used to culture peanut as it provides high yield and nutritional properties.  相似文献

The distribution of the gametophytes of Asparagopsis armata in Ireland currently encompasses a 75 km radius from a seaweed farm that commercially cultivates this species. This is a smaller range than the historic distribution shows since its arrival in Ireland in 1939. Fragmentation of this alga to seed ropes at a commercial seaweed farm seems to maintain the populations of this introduced species. Without this commercial seaweed farm A. armata would probably not flourish on the Irish west coast and this farm appears to act as a source pool for the populations. The sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of Irish waters are suitable for growth, survival and asexual reproduction of the tetrasporophyte and gametophyte; however, they may not be warm enough for sexual reproduction. The effect of temperature on the life cycle and distribution are discussed. Three species, i.e., Ulva lactuca, Plocamium cartilagineum and Cryptopleura ramosa, were hosts for epiphytic A. armata in summer in over 60% of the collected samples.  相似文献

The effects of various substances upon germination and tube growth of pollen of Setaria sphacelata were investigated in hanging-drop culture. Both sucrose (0.6–0.7 M) and boron (1–5 ppm, as borate) are essential for germination. Comparable results were obtained with boric acid, sodium tetraborate and tri-n-butyl borate as boron sources, but sodium tetraphenylboron was inhibitory. Good germination and growth were obtained with raffinose and cellobiose, alone or in combination with sucrose (total 0.5 M); 0.25 M rhamnose, lactose and glycerol were without effect, and xylose, galactose and glucose were slightly inhibitory in the presence of 0.25 M sucrose; 0.25 M arabinose, fructose, mannose, sorbose, maltose, mannitol and sorbitol completely inhibited germination, even in the presence of 0.25 M sucrose. IAA and GA (0.01–10 ppm) could not replace or supplement the effects of borate on germination and growth, indicating the pollen to be self-sufficient in this respect. Riboflavin (0.1–10 ppm) and calcium pantothenate (1–100 ppm) stimulated germination and growth, whereas 0.01–10 ppm of thiamine, pyridoxine, nicotinic acid and ascorbic acid were generally without effect. Although copper sulphate, manganese sulphate, zinc sulphate and ammonium molybdate could not replace boric acid, 1.0 ppm of copper, manganese and zinc stimulated germination and growth in the presence of boron. In no instance were tubes found comparable in length to those required for fertilisation in vivo. It was concluded that the pollen probably requires a complex mixture of substances, including sucrose and borate, before this can be achieved in vitro.  相似文献

Illus. 1962.—Brittle stem (btl), an abnormal sublethal phenotype in the tomato caused by boron deficiency, was found to be controlled by a single recessive gene. The threshold of boron concentration for brittle-stem expression is not constant but fluctuates and is intimately associated with a number of interrelated environmental factors. Light duration and intensity are especially significant, while temperature and nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium availability probably contribute to btl expression. It is suggested that when boron supply is limiting, brittle-stem (boron deficiency) symptoms are intensified by any environmental factor or factors which enhance plant growth. Plants of btl/btl genotype contain much less boron in their leaves than do those of the control variety ‘Rutgers’; conversely, these plants contain more boron in their roots when grown in nutrient cultures of high boron content. This finding is discussed in relation to possible modes of gene action.  相似文献

The effect of tungsten (W) and molybdenum (Mo) on the growth of Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans and Methanospirillum hungatei was studied in syntrophic cultures and the pure cultures of both the organisms. Cells that were grown syntropically were separated by Percoll density centrifugation. Measurement of hydrogenase and formate dehydrogenase levels in cell extracts of syntrophically grown cells correlated with the methane formation rates in the co-cultures. The effect of W and Mo on the activity of formate dehydrogenase was considerable in both the organisms, whereas hydrogenase activity remained relatively constant. Depletion of tungsten and/or molybdenum, however, did not affect the growth of the pure culture of S. fumaroxidans on propionate plus fumarate significantly, although the specific activities of hydrogenase and especially formate dehydrogenase were influenced by the absence of Mo and W. This indicates that the organism has a low W or Mo requirement under these conditions. Growth of M. hungatei on either formate or H2/CO2 required tungsten, and molybdenum could replace tungsten to some extent. Our results suggest a more prominent role for H2 as electron carrier in the syntrophic conversion of propionate, when the essential trace metals W and Mo for the functioning of formate dehydrogenase are depleted.  相似文献

The joint effects of growth temperature, incubation temperature, and molybdenum concentration on the nitrogen fixation rate ofAnabaena cylindrica were determined using the acetylene-reduction technique. The nitrogen-fixation response to increased molybdenum concentration varied among three growth temperatures (15°, 23°, and 30° C). The pattern of rate change was similar within a growth temperature but increased overall in magnitude with the three incubation temperatures (also 15°, 23°, and 30° C). The maximum rate of nitrogen fixation occurred at 30°C regardless of previous growth temperature. The minimum molybdenum concentration necessary to yield substantial acetylene reduction varied with growth temperature: at 15°C, 15g 1–1 was effective; at 23°C, less than 5g 1–1 was effective; and at 30°C, 50g 1–1 was effective. At all three growth temperatures, increases in molybdenum concentration above the minimum effective concentration produced increases in acetylene reduction. However, at higher molybdenum concentrations inhibition of nitrogen fixation occurred.  相似文献
