Abstract

Puccinellia festucaeformis (Host) Parl.: germination and early growth on different salt substrates. Germination behaviour of Puccinellia festucaeformis seeds and early growth of seedlings at different experimental conditions was analysed. The following growth substrates were utilized: NaCl, KCl, KNO3, MgCl2, MgSO4, Na2SO4, NaNO3, CaCl2 at the decreasing concentrations of 0.50, 0.25, 0.12, 0.06M. Caryopses were allowed to imbibe and grow at alternating temperatures (10°-20°C or 20°-30°C) in the dark for 3 days. Seedling were grown for 15 days, at controlled light and temperature conditions, in the same nutrient substrates as those used for the germination experiments.

The germination experiments showed a high tolerance to salts up to 0.25M solution and for the whole range of MgSO4 concentrations. High growth temperatures increased the depressive effects of salt concentrations. Seedling growth was highly reduced when salt concentration was higher than 0.12M. High salt tolerance - maximum shoot and root growth - was showed by seedling allowed to grow on 0.50M MgSO4.

Germination and growth condition of Puccinellia festucaeformis is discussed in relation to the ecological features of this species and to its possible importance as bioindicator of MgSO4 rich natural substrates.  相似文献

  • Seed germination of Citrullus colocynthis, as in many other species of Cucurbitaceae, is inhibited by light, particularly at low temperatures. Germination response to light and temperature has been attributed to day length and temperature during seed maturation. This study assessed the effects of these factors on the germination response of C. colocynthis to temperature and light quality.
  • Ripe fruits were collected from natural habitats during December and February and germinated at three temperatures (15/25, 20/30 and 25/35 °C) in five light treatments (dark, white light and Red:Far Red (R:FR) ratios of 0.30, 0.87 and 1.19). Additionally, unripe fruits were also collected from natural habitats and completed their maturation in growth chambers under different day lengths (6, 16 and 24 h of darkness) at 10/20 °C, and in darkness at both 10/20 °C and 25/35 °C. Mature seeds of the different treatments were germinated in the same five light treatments at 15/25 °C.
  • Germination was significantly higher in the dark than that in any light treatment. Seeds matured at higher temperatures (i.e. seeds from the December collection and those matured at 25/35 °C) had significantly higher germination than those matured at lower temperatures (i.e. seeds from the February collection and those matured at 10/20 °C). Dark germination was significantly higher for the December collection than for the February collection. Seeds of the two collections germinated in the dark only at 15/25 °C. However, seeds matured in a growth chamber at 10/20 °C in darkness germinated at 15/25 °C in all light treatments, except for the R:FR ratio 0.30. Seeds of the different treatments failed to germinate in FR‐rich light.
  • This study demonstrates that both temperature and day length during seed maturation play significant roles in the germination response of C. colocynthis. Additionally, the dark requirement for germination is likely beneficial for species with the larger seeds, such as C. colocynthis, which produce bigger seedlings that are able to emerge from deep soils and are competitively superior under dense vegetation and resource‐limited conditions.

Germination ecology of Parthenium hysterophorus, recently introduced to Ethiopia, was studied in a series of experiments. Viability of the seeds was greater than 50% after 26 months of burial in the soil indicating the potential build‐up of a substantial persistent soil seed bank. A short period of dry storage was sufficient to overcome a light requirement for germination in a minor fraction of the seeds. Likewise, seeds exhumed from burial showed an increase in germination ability in darkness over time, with a weak tendency for seasonal cyclicity in dormancy level at one of two sites. Germination occurred at the mean minimum (10°C) and maximum (25°C) temperatures of the collection sites, as well as over a wide range of fluctuating (12/2°C‐35/25°C) temperatures in light. No germination of P. hysterophorus seeds occurred at osmotic potentials < ‐0.52 MPa (at 27°C), the species being less tolerant to moisture stress than sorghum grains. Most seedlings emerged from shallowly buried (< 0.5 cm) seeds and none from more than 5 cm depth. Naturally dispersed seeds required about 60 days, at a hot lowland site, to start emergence despite the presence of adequate rainfall, and higher number of seedlings emerged in undisturbed plots than in hand hoed plots. These experiments and field observations suggest that there are no obvious climatic conditions that may limit the germination of Parthenium hysterophorus in Ethiopia, but a high moisture requirement of the seeds for germination could be the major factor limiting germination during the dry season.  相似文献

Germination and seedling emergence studies were made on seeds harvested from four different umbel positions of three cultivars of celery (Apium graveolens L.). Although heavier seeds were produced from primary umbels than from other umbels, these were less viable as measured by the germination percentage at I8°C in the light. However, germination of viable seeds from quaternary umbels was lower than that of seeds from primary umbels at 18°C in the dark when incubated with GA4, (2 × 10 ?4M) and seed from secondary and tertiary umbels tended to be intermediate in response. All viable seeds germinated when N6-benzyladenine (10?2M) was used in combination with GA4. Seeds from quaternary umbels of two of the cultivars had a lower high-temperature limit for germination in the dark than did seeds from other umbels. In glasshouse experiments the emergence of viable ‘quaternary’ seeds of these cultivars was higher than that of ‘primary’ seeds. Under these conditions the time to 50% of the final emergence as determined after 42 days was similar for seeds from all umbel positions within each cultivar. In two varieties seedling weights were greater from seeds of primary as compared to quaternary umbels, and in general, the largest seedlings arose from the heaviest seeds and the smallest from the lightest seeds in all three cultivars.  相似文献

Abstract

Swertia chirayita, a critically endangered medicinal herb, is being over-harvested in the wild. Understanding seed germination is a pre-requisite to ensure species conservation. The germination of seeds collected from six microhabitats was studied at 20°C, 25°C, and 30°C, both under a 14/10 h light/dark photoperiod and in continuous darkness. Two-way ANOVA indicated that microhabitat and temperature significantly affect seed germination, germination rate, germination recovery (GR), and GR rate. Overall, the seeds collected from under canopy showed a significantly (p < 0.05) higher germination than those from open habitats, at 20°C, 25°C, and 30°C (14/10 h light/dark photoperiod). Germination was negligible in continuous darkness but after transfer to a 14/10 h light/dark photoperiod, the seeds from under canopy significantly recovered at 20°C and at 25°C (p < 0.05), and showed the highest germination percentage compared to seeds collected from tree base, stump base, shrubberies, and grassy slope. Similarly, at 30°C, seeds from under canopy recorded the highest GR percentage. In general, seed germination, mean germination rate, seed GR, and GR rate were significantly greater (p < 0.05) at 25°C. Among the microhabitats tested, variation in GR rate was significant (p < 0.05). Seeds were confirmed to be positively photoblastic.  相似文献

Abstract

Effects of temperature and sea water on germination behaviour of Althenia filiformis Petit seeds. - Germination capacity and energy of Althenia filiformis Petit seeds have been investigated, 90 and 180 days after ripening, to carry out a preliminary study on ecology of this species.

This species, halophite and hydrophyte, is spreaded along the coast shores of middle-west mediterranean sea and atlantic shores of Morocco, Spain, Portugal and France.

Seeds were soaked in the dark, at 10°, 20°, 30°C, in solutions at different salt concentration: sea water; sea water diluted in deionized water at ratios (v/v) 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 8; sea water plus 26 gr/l NaCl; deionized water, as control.

The experimental results show that germination is reduced and delayed when seeds are soaked in progressively concentrated salt solutions; in sea water plus 26 gr/l NaCl seed germination is inhibited.

Seeds pretreated by soaking at 3°C for 10 days in sea water diluted (1:1) by deionized water did not show, when soaked in salt solution at weak and middle concentration, any delay in germination in comparison with unpretreated seeds. On the contrary, pretreated and unpretreated seeds sown in sea water at 30°C had shown, 180 days after ripening, a significant depression in germination values as compared with seeds sown at 20°C.  相似文献

In the present study, the germination characteristics of three endemic species from Turkey, Tripleurospermum pichleri (Boiss.) Bornm., Cirsium leucopsis D.C and Senecio olympicus Boiss. (Asteraceae), were investigated. Germination was studied for fresh seeds, for seeds subjected to short‐time chilling (15 days, moist +4°C), to GA3 (100, 150 and 250 ppm) and a combination of chilling and GA3; in all cases seeds were incubated either at 20/10°C day/night with light daytime or at 20°C in darkness with daily short‐time dim light (DSDL). In C. leucopsis seeds, all GA3 treatments enhanced the final germination percentages. The mean germination time (MGT) of C. leucopsis was lower under DSDL than with photoperiod. The chilling treatment with GA3 in DSDL significantly increased germination in S. olympicus seeds (from 45 to 87%). Germination increased to 55% in T. pichleri by chilling under photoperiod compared with 32% by chilling followed by DSDL. In conclusion, these three co‐existing endemic Asteraceae species have different germination behaviours; something that should be taken into account for ex situ propagation. However, an efficient way to germinate all species is to use 250 ppm GA3 and 20/10°C with photoperiod.  相似文献

Abstract

The germination of spring and winter wheat lines of exaploid Triticum « Denti de Cani ». — The dormancy in the seeds of two lines of Triticum « Denti de Cani » (which is spontaneous in Sardinia), one with solid stem (CP line), a spring line, the other with hollow stem (CV line), an winter line, has been studied. Germination was carried out in the dark, in Petri dishes at the constant temperatures of 5°, 10°, 20°, 23°, 26°, 30° and 35°C, using full ripe seeds, and seeds in different stages of after-ripening up to one year of age. The increase in % germination, for increasing temperatures above 5°C, is clearly conditioned by the progress of after-ripening in the seeds. In fact it was seen that, in general for the two lines, percentages over 50% of seeds germinated at 3 days were reached: at 10° and 20° after 15 days from the full ripening; at 23°C after 30 days; at 26°C after 50 days; at 30°C after about 100 days and at 35°C only after about 4–5 months from the harvest. During the experiment at 5°C it was observed that, during the first year of life of seeds and especially in the CP line, this temperature produces a clear slowing down in germinations after first year from the ripening, only the CV seeds — not the CP which remain very much inhibited — reach germination values over 50% at 3 days. It has also been demonstrated that the CV are more sensitive than the CP, in the first initial period of after-ripening (15 and 30 days), to the non-inhibiting activity of low temperatures (5° and 10°C) and that, between these, the 10°C temperature promotes the germination more clearly than the 5°C temperature. The results obtained have shown that the dormancy wears off in the spring CP-line much more slowly than in the winter CV-line. The CP-seeds remain in a relative dormancy condition for a long time, which causes a significative delay in germination, up to 100 days from the full ripening stage.  相似文献

Six perennial species endemic to South West Western Australia (Acacia trulliformis, Austrostipa geoffreyi, Banksia oligantha, B. mucronulata, Hakea tuberculata and Orthrosanthus muelleri) were screened for salt tolerance and recovery during seed germination. Growth and survival of 6-month old seedlings of these six plus a further vegetatively propagated species (Myoporum turbinatum) were subsequently examined in response to salt and waterlogging application. Water uptake under elevated saline conditions (200 and 400 mM NaCl) was slow, but not restrictive to germination. Moreover, a large proportion of seeds that were unable to germinate under saline conditions recovered after being transferred to non-saline conditions. Germination, growth and survival varied with species and the salt concentration used. Increasing salt concentrations tended to increase time to germination. Germination of Acacia trulliformis seeds declined exponentially with increasing salinity, and seedlings suffered reduced growth under saline and non-saline waterlogging. Austrostipa geoffreyi seeds were sensitive to saline treatments but seedlings were highly tolerant of both saline and/or waterlogged conditions. Germination of the three proteaceous species declined significantly under highly saline conditions (400 mM NaCl) with seedlings of the two Banksia species not surviving any treatment with the exception of non-saline waterlogging. Seedlings of H. tuberculata were more resilient to treatment conditions. Orthrosanthus muelleri was sensitive to salt stress during germination but was highly resistant to waterlogging, both saline and non-saline. This study provides an insight into the response and resilience of components of the vegetation understorey of saline-affected regions of Western Australia not usually evaluated allowing for more informed restoration.  相似文献

Suaeda aegyptiaca is a facultative halophyte found in saline and non‐saline habitats of the Arab Gulf desert, which produces small‐sized undispersible seeds. The interactive effects of maternal salinity and other environmental conditions, such as salinity, light and temperatures, that are prevailing during seed germination have received little attention for a facultative halophyte. This study tested the effects of maternal salinity on salt tolerance during seed germination of S. aegyptiaca under different light and temperature regimes. Seeds collected from both saline and non‐saline habitats of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were germinated in 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM NaCl, and incubated at 15/25°C, 20/30°C and 25/35°C in both 12‐h light/12‐h dark regimes and continuous darkness. Generally, seeds of the non‐saline habitat were 56% heavier and attained greater germination at the lower temperatures than seeds of the saline habitat. Seeds of the saline habitat germinated better in saline solutions at higher temperatures and in light. Germination was faster for seeds of the saline habitat than for seeds of non‐saline habitats. Germination recovery after transfer to distilled water was significantly greater for seeds from the non‐saline habitat, compared with seeds from saline habitats. Recovery was greater at lower and/or moderate temperatures, compared with at higher temperatures. Germination was significantly faster during recovery, compared with in the saline solutions. The study indicates that the maternal effect of salinity was confounded with the seed‐size effect and it cannot be conclusively confirmed.  相似文献

The genus Jeffersonia, which contains only two species, has a trans‐Atlantic disjunct distribution. The aims of this study were to determine the requirements for breaking dormancy and germination of J. dubia seeds and to compare its dormancy characteristics with those of the congener in eastern North America. Ripe seeds of J. dubia contain an underdeveloped embryo and were permeable to water. In nature, seeds were dispersed in May, while embryos began to grow in September, and were fully elongated by late November. Germination started in March of the next year, and seeds emerged as seedlings soon after germination. In laboratory experiments, incubation at high temperatures (25 °C, 25/15 °C) for at least 8 weeks was required to initiate embryo growth, while a transfer to moderate temperatures (20/10 °C, 15/6 °C) was needed for the completion of embryo growth. At least 8 weeks at 5 °C was effective in overcoming physiological dormancy and for germination in seeds after the embryos had fully elongated. Thus, both high and low temperatures were essential to break dormancy. Gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment could substitute for the high temperature requirement, but not for the low temperature requirement. Based on the dormancy‐breaking requirements, it is confirmed that the seeds have deep simple morphophysiological dormancy. This dormancy type is similar to that of seeds of the eastern North American species J. diphylla. Although seeds require 10–11 months from seed dispersal to germination in nature, under controlled conditions they required only 3 months after treatment with 1000 mg·l?1 GA3, followed by incubation at 15/6 °C. This represents practical knowledge for propagation of these plants from seed.  相似文献

Stipa-species are wide-spread in Central Asia, but sexual reproduction in the dry steppes is rare. To facilitate conservation and restoration of these important rangelands, we studied germination characteristics of three common Mongolian Stipa-species under field- and lab conditions. Seeds of Stipa krylovii, Stipa gobica and Stipa glareosa were sown at the study site in Southern Mongolia over two consecutive years during which period tests were carried out to ascertain whether competition or herbivory are the main constraints of seedling establishment. In addition, we tested germination and seed viability in the laboratory under two different temperature regimes (20/10°C and 8/4°C), as well as the effect of cold-stratification. The lab experiments also included S. krylovii seeds originating from three climatically different provenances. None of the three Stipa-species seedlings emerged during the first 2 years of the field study. However, after an unusually intense rain event in the third year, 3% of S. krylovii, 0.6% of S. glareosa and 0.1% of S. gobica seeds germinated in the study plots. The factors ‘sowing-year’ and ‘vegetation’ significantly affected seedling emergence, whereas grazing had no effect at all. Under laboratory conditions a high percentage of viable seeds of S. gobica and S. glareosa germinated at both incubation temperatures, and cold-stratification had no effect on germination or viability. Germination of S. krylovii seeds required warmer temperatures and cold-stratification had a positive effect. Such evidence for dormancy was more pronounced in seeds from the moister, northern provenances. Germination of Stipa-species in the field is rare and only possible under exceptionally moist conditions. Conservation should thus concentrate on steppe conservation rather than on restoration. Where artificial reseeding is necessary, differences among species and also among different seed provenances should be taken into account.  相似文献

The seed germination characteristics of Maianthemum dilatatum were investigated in a laboratory experiment and the results compared with those of other species in the subfamily Asparagoideae, LILIACEAE (Engler's system). M. dilatatum seeds mature in late September to October in montane to subalpine areas across Japan. Germination percentages and rates were low for fresh seeds at 10 to 30°C. Seeds cold stratified for 4 months or longer showed increased germination percentages and rates. The seeds lost germinability with decreasing moisture content. The seeds germinated well in dark conditions. The process of germination from the cotyledonary sheath/petiole breaking through the seed coat to the appearance of the first and second leaves was examined. After emergence of the cotyledonary sheath/petiole, a root emerged from it, and additional roots appeared after 1–2 months. The plumule emerged from the cotyledonary sheath/petiole after the seedling had three roots. Seeds dispersed in autumn, and germinate slowly in the next spring after exposure to low temperature even though dark condition as buried seed. We compared the seed germination characteristics among species in the Asparagoideae or with other recent taxonomy, and found that seedlings of Paris verticillate and Trillium apetalon, which belong to Melanthiaceae, and Streptopus streptopoides Var. japonica and Clintonia udensis, which belong to Liliaceae (linear cotyledon), were different from Asparagaceae, showing a globose cotyledon in the APG II.  相似文献

Aruncus dioicus (Walter) Fernald (Rosaceae) is a perennial herbaceous plant whose young shoots are traditionally collected in the wild and consumed as a food in NE Italy. The aim of this study was to determine the germination requirements of its seeds in order to start its cultivation, and to assess the germination of six accessions of the species. Viability of seeds ranged from 86 to 97% in the various accessions. Germination rate was almost null in seeds of two accessions, and ranged from 10.5 to 37.3 in the other ones. The seed coat was permeable to water. Treatments with GA3, KNO3 and mechanical scarification did not enhance the germination, while the cold stratification treatment at 2 °C for different periods improved the germination rate and the mean germination time as compared with the untreated seeds. With 45 days of cold stratification, the germination rate and mean germination time (respectively, 90.1% and 7.7 dd) of seeds were different from those of the untreated seeds. Cold stratified seeds germinated under artificial light and did not germinate in the dark. Seeds of A. dioicus displayed an intermediate physiological dormancy, removable by a cold stratification treatment, requiring both light and cold conditions.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of temperature regimes (six constant and four alternating temperatures), light qualities (five red : far red ratios) and water potentials (ΨW; seven NaCl and polyethylene glycol 6000 [PEG] solutions) on the percentage and germination rate, as well as the post‐seminal development morphology, that allow Pilosocereus arrabidae seeds to germinate in a hot semiarid climate on the south‐eastern Brazilian coast. The results showed that seeds germinated similarly between constant and alternating temperatures, with an optimal germination at 25/20°C and 20°C. Pilosocereus arrabidae seeds were photoblastic positive and the final germination percentage was inhibited at low red : far red ratios. Maximum germination was obtained in distilled water (0 MPa) and decreases of ΨW in the solutions reduced the germination, which was lower in NaCl than in iso‐osmotic PEG solutions. Germination inhibition appears to be osmotic because the recovery response was high when non‐germinated seeds from both iso‐osmotic solutions were transferred to water. Seeds of P. arrabidae are small and germination is phaneroepigeal. Despite the slow growth typically seen in seedlings and adults of Cactaceae, germination in this species depends on the ability of the seeds to appropriately sense and react to environmental cues that correlate with times and places under low‐risk growth conditions.  相似文献

Investigations on seeds of Scrophularia marilandica L. were undertaken to determine their germination requirements. Seeds were collected from three naturally occurring sites and one greenhouse-grown population in London, Ontario in September and October of 1997. Some were set to germinate immediately after collection; others were stored in or on soil outside and/or under controlled laboratory conditions before testing. Germination was assessed under two light/temperature regimes (35°C 14 h light, 20°C 10 h dark and 25°C 14 h light, 10°C 10 h dark), in continuous darkness, and in the presence of two germination-promoting chemicals (GA3 and KNO3). Fresh seeds germinated best at 35/20°C, while stored seeds germinated best at 25/10°C. No differences in percent germination were found among three seed-maturity stages. All chemical treatments, except 0.01 M KNO3, increased percent germination. Significant differences were found both among and within sites for most chemical treatments, but exposure to 3 × 10−4 M GA3 caused almost every seed to germinate. When compared to the control, both the gibberellic acid and the soil-storage treatments contributed to faster germination. Exposure of seeds to naturally prevailing conditions on the soil surface followed by testing under the 25/10°C regime produced the highest percent germination. No seeds germinated in the dark. In summary, seeds of S. marilandica exhibit physiological dormancy, which can be alleviated by exposure to light, after-ripening and/or cold stratification. It is probable that the differences in germination response among sites can be attributed to differences in environmental conditions during seed production. These experiments indicate that the seeds of S. marilandica must be buried shortly after dispersal in order to form a persistent seed bank.  相似文献

Bienertia cycloptera (Chenopodiaceae) produces two types of leaf foliage colour (reddish and yellowish). In order to determine the role of leaf colour variation in regulating the germination characteristics and salinity tolerance during germination, a study was conducted on seeds collected from plants of both colours. Seeds with and without pulp were germinated under two illumination conditions (12‐h light photoperiod and continuous dark), three alternating temperature regimes (15/25°C, 20/30°C and 25/35°C), and several salinity levels at 20/30°C. Germination percentage was significantly higher for seeds without pulp as compared to the seeds with pulp. The response of B. cycloptera seeds to salinity depended on the leaf colour. Thus, the seeds collected from reddish coloured plants were able to tolerate higher salinity compared to those of yellowish coloured plant. The germination recovery results indicate that the seeds from both coloured plants could remain viable in saline condition and they will be able to germinate once the salinity level are decreased by rain. The production of different foliage colours by B. cycloptera seems to be an adaptative strategy which increases the possibility for establishment in unpredictable environments by producing seeds with different germination requirements and salinity tolerance.  相似文献

This study aims to explore the effect of environmental factors (temperature, light, storage time) on germination response and dormancy patterns in eight Mediterranean native wildplants, belonging to the Euphorbia L. genus. In detail, we considered E. amygdaloides subsp. arbuscula, E. bivonae subsp. bivonae, E. ceratocarpa, E. characias, E. dendroides, E. melapetala, E. myrsinites, and E. rigida. We collected seeds from natural plant populations and performed germination assays in climatic chambers at seven constant temperatures (from 5 to 35°C, with 5°C increments), and four fluctuating temperature regimes (8/15, 8/20, 8/25, and 8/30°C, with a 12/12 hr thermoperiod). Germination assays were set up both in dark (D) and in light/dark conditions (L/D, 12/12 hr photoperiod), after short and long seed storage (SS around 30 days and LS around 150 days). For all these species, except E. amygdaloides subsp. arbuscula, results show that the final germinated proportions were improved by a long storage period (>150 days), which supports the existence of nondeep physiological dormancy. Optimal temperature levels ranged from 14.3 to 21.3°C and base temperatures ranged from 5.6 to 12.1°C, while ceiling temperatures from 25.6 to 34.7°C. For none of these species, germinations were favored by an alternating daily temperature regime, while in several instances, germinations were quicker and more complete in darkness, than in an alternating light/dark regime. In some instances, extreme temperature levels (5 and 30°C) induced dormancy and germinations did not resume when seeds were exposed at optimal temperature levels. Results are discussed in terms of the dynamics of emergences and how this might be affected by climate changes.  相似文献

Summary The lengthy dormancy requirement of yew seeds can be overcome with a simple in vitro method. Viable embryos were excised from seeds ofTaxus brevifolia and four cultivars ofT. media over a range of developmental stages. Embryos were cultured in several basal media formulations (Whites’, Gamborg’s B5 and Murashige and Skoog’s) under dark or light. After a lag period of 1 to 2 wk, embryos of both species germinated precociously. Germination rates of up to 70% were obtained withT. media cv. Hicksi embryos. The highest rates of germination were obtained in White’s and MS media. Embryos excised from green seeds with undeveloped arils showed the highest germination rates. As the seeds approached maturity, in vitro germination rates of the excised embryos declined dramatically. Green seeds and seeds with developing arils could be stored at 5° C without large loss in embryo germination. Seeds with fully developed arils could be stored frozen at −20° C for 1 wk while still allowing about 50% of embryo germination. Arisaema dracontium (green dragon) is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in eastern North America. However, in Canada, at the northern edge of its distribution, the species is designated as “vulnerable” with respect to conservation status. In natural populations, seedlings are uncommon; the present study was undertaken in order to characterize seed and seedling properties in green dragon. Seeds were sampled from five sites, ranging from Ontario at the northern limit of the distribution range, to Louisiana in the south. Seed germinability ranged from 25 to 55%, depending upon source. Experiments indicated that neither the hard seed coat nor a water-soluble exudate from the seed was responsible for inducing or maintaining dormancy. Patterns of seed germination appear to reflect general climatic conditions at the sites where seeds had originated. Cold stratification at 3°C produced significantly greater relative germinability in all seed collections except the most southerly one, from Baton Rouge. These seeds also had a slower overall speed of germination. In contrast, germination of seeds from the most northerly site was promoted by cold stratification and occurred over a relatively brief period. Germination in alternating light and dark conditions decreased the speed of germination compared to germination in the dark, however exposure to light changed the phenology of germination by promoting development of adventitious roots and primary leaves in these seedlings.  相似文献
