Abstract

Seasonal variations of mineral nutrients and trace elements in Fagus sylvatica L. leaves at Vallombrosa (FI). - During the vegetative periodo 1987 monthly samples of beech leaves were collected in Vallombrosa forest area to determine the nutritive situation of beech trees by leaves analysis. Among nutrients, potassium appears the worst supplied one. Even copper is present in very low values, under the critical level. Heavy metals as manganese, aluminium, lead, cadmium and also iron show a clear increase during the vegetative season.  相似文献

The amount and distribution of mitochondrial (mt) DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism was determined among individual tree samples of two Japanese beech species, Fagus crenata and F.japonica. Individual plants were collected from 16 F. crenata populations throughout the range of the species, and from three F. japonica populations. We detected enough variation to characterize eleven and three chondriome types in F. crenata and F.japonica, respectively. The grouping of beech chondriome types based upon the cladistic analysis of mtDNA polymorphism allowed us to recognize the apparent geographical patterns of mtDIMA diversity: the resulting three main groups occupied distinct geographic areas. This geographic differentiation is likely to reflect the history of the Japanese beech forests after the last glacial period of the Pleistocene. In addition, the mtDNA polymorphism encountered within F. crenata encompassed all the variation observed in F.japonica. Our result suggests the need for re-evaluation of their phylogenetic relationships.  相似文献

Abstract

Fine roots represent a small proportion of total plant biomass however they represent the most dynamic component of the root systems of woody plants. There is limited information on the beech fine root production in Mediterranean ecosystems and especially in Greece. We measured live, dead and total fine root biomass (d<2 mm) (LFRB, DFRB and TFRB, respectively) over a growing season in a beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand on Paiko mountain, NW Greece, in order to contribute to the generally scarce knowledge of the fine root biomass of beech stands. It was found that TFRB and LFRB increased from May to July and then decreased. LFRB decreased with soil depth while there was no pattern at the change of DFRB with soil depth.  相似文献

Using an enrichment procedure, we cloned microsatellite repeats from European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and developed primers for the amplification of microsatellite markers. Six polymorphic loci were characterized which produced 3–21 alleles in 70 individuals from one Italian population, with an observed heterozygosity between 0.58 and 0.85. All six loci amplified fragments which were polymorphic in the closely related species, Fagus orientalis, also. Owing to their very high degree of variation, these markers should be very useful in gene flow studies of these species.  相似文献

We assessed 62 fungal strains in 31 species of wood decay fungi in the ability to decompose wood blocks of Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) under a pure culture condition. Fungi were collected in a cool temperate beech forest in Japan and isolated from the inside of beech logs and from sporocarps fruiting on logs and snags of beech that were different in diameter and decay class. Fungi in Holobasidiomycetidae showed marked decomposition of lignin and carbohydrate. These fungi were divided into three groups according to the pattern of lignin and carbohydrate utilization. Phanerochaete filamentosa decomposed lignin selectively. Lampteromyces japonicus, Steccherinum rhois, Trichaptum biforme, Stereum ostrea, Mycena haematopoda, Antrodiella albocinnamomea, Daedalea dickinsii, Daedaleopsis tricolor, Ganoderma tsunodae, and Trametes versicolor decomposed lignin and carbohydrates simultaneously. Psathyrella candolleana, Lenzites betulinus, and Trametes hirsuta decomposed carbohydrates selectively. Species in the Phragmobasidiomycetidae and in the Ascomycota caused low mass loss of wood.  相似文献

Seedling recruitment and survivorship of beech (Fagus crenata) were studied with special reference to the simultaneous death of undergrowing bamboo (Sasa kurilensis). The survival rate of beech seedlings on the floor whereSasa had withered was much higher than that on the floor whereSasa survived. Damping off caused the largest mortality among beech seedlings. However, the allocation pattern of matter to different parts of the seedlings indicated that their survival was greatly affected by production economy. The dense cover of dwarf bamboo prevented the establishment of beech seedling banks on the forest floor. The interval between the times when simultaneous death ofSasa occur and the length of its recovery period are thus important factors controlling the dynamics of beech forests in Japan.  相似文献

While clonal growth is important in the East Asian Fagus subgenus Engleriana and the North American Fagus grandifolia (subgenus Fagus), for other subgenus Fagus species the vast majority of regeneration involves sexual reproduction with clonal growth only rarely observed. Here we aim to confirm using nuclear microsatellite markers whether clonal growth occurs in the Japanese endemic species Fagus crenata (subgenus Fagus) by investigating the origin of multi-stemmed clumps found within a high-elevation dwarf beech forest on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. We found that all stems collected from three separate clumps belonged to the same clump-specific multi-locus genotypes. The maximum size of clones was 3–4 m in diameter, comparable in size to those seen in the predominantly asexually regenerating Japanese species Fagus japonica (subgenus Engleriana). The species capacity for clonal growth is likely to underlie its ability to persist at high-elevation exposed sites at the limits of its ecological range.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this study was (a) to analyse natural Fagus sylvatica L. s.l. regeneration in low elevation stands located in the central part of Evros region in northeastern Greece in relation to factors such as site productivity, type of silvicultural treatment and regeneration origin and (b) to determine whether or not sprout origin regeneration is significant for the maintenance of beech stands. One hundred and twenty plots (3 m × 3 m) were established in areas where thinnings and regeneration fellings had taken place, and in two site productivity regimes. In each plot, the number of beech seedlings, saplings, and stump or root sprouts (regeneration plants) with a height of up to 3 m was counted, and their height measured. Our findings indicate that even though reproduction by seed is the predominant regeneration mechanism in our stands, in the medium productivity sites sprouts represent a significant percentage of the total number of plants. Moreover, sprouting functions as a mechanism of maintenance of beech stands in medium productivity sites. During the regeneration fellings practised in this area, it is advisable to cut the seedlings and saplings of the advanced regeneration in order to supplement the seed-derived plants with seedling sprouts.  相似文献

Abstract

Fagus sylvatica forests are considered to be of Community interest according to Directive 92/43/EEC. Climate change predictions for Spain point to a warming scenario, coupled with decreasing rainfall, which may have an impact on their future distribution particularly at the extremes of its distribution area. Species distribution models incorporating bioclimatic, topographic and phytogeographic variables were used as predictors to assess their habitat suitability under current conditions and a climate change projection. Ten single models were generated and an ensemble-forecasting model was subsequently built by computing a consensus of single-model projections. The results revealed that ombrothermic indices are the main factors controlling the distribution of Spanish beech forests. They are highly vulnerable to climate change and could suffer a decline in their habitat suitability if climate trends observed are maintained in the future. The least favoured areas for them will be located close to the limit between the Temperate and Mediterranean climates, where they could suffer a loss of habitat suitability. Conversely, suitable new areas could be found mainly in western areas of the Cantabrian Range and in the Central Pyrenees.  相似文献

A species ofMycosphaerella with aPseudocercospora anamorph was collected on overwintered fallen leaves of Japanese beech,Fagus crenata. Based on comparison of morphology withMycosphaerella species on Fagaceae, the fungus was newly described asMycosphaerella buna. ThePseudocercospora anamorph derived from a single ascospore of the fungus was morphologically identical to an endophytic anamorph isolated from asymptomatic living leaves of Japanese beech. The nut productivity, density of fallen nuts, seedling appearance and seedling survival of a Japanese beech (Fagus crenata Blume) were investigated at three localities, Mt Gozaisho, Mt Hodaka and Mt Bandai, Japan, from 1976 to 1992. Two patterns of cycles, a short cycle and a long one, were confirmed in the beech nut productivity. Synchronization in the long cycle was recognized both on Mt Hodaka and Mt Bandai. On Mt Gozaisho, the beech nut productivity was quite low, and the seedlings disappeared within 1 year. The phenomenon on Mt Gozaisho seemed to be caused by the low matter production mainly due to erosion and poor soils. A large number of seedlings appeared in the next spring of heavy mast years on Mt Hodaka and Mt Bandai. The large beech nut productivity contributed to the large seedling supply, and this enhanced the survival probability of beech seedlings. This demonstrates the possibility that beech seedlings survived longer even under dense dwarf bamboos, particularly if the seedling supply was large.  相似文献

Fungal communities within a naturally fallen bough of Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) were investigated with reference to chemical properties of decay columns. Five logs were cut out from the fallen bough, which ranged from 10.7 to 20.5 cm in diameter. Nine fungal species and one sterile fungus were isolated from decay columns that elongated along a longitudinal axis and were delimited by black zone lines and wood discoloration. Lampteromyces japonicus and Trichoderma spp. were isolated from all five logs. Lampteromyces japonicus and Antrodiella albocinnamomea occupied the largest volume in the logs. Lignin and carbohydrate contents, lignocellulose index (LCI), nitrogen content, and water content were different among decay columns colonized by different fungal species in each log. In L. japonicus, LCI of decay column was correlated to that of wood blocks decayed under pure culture condition by the fungi isolated from the decay columns. These results suggest that the small-scale variation in chemical properties within fallen logs of Japanese beech reflects the distribution and the decay ability of colonized fungi.  相似文献

Abstract. The structure and composition of a cool-temperate old-growth beech (Fagus crenata) - dwarf bamboo (Sasa spp.) forest, partially affected by landslide disturbance, in the Daisen Forest Reserve of southwestern Japan, were investigated in relation to forest floor and canopy conditions. All stems ≥ 4 cm DBH were mapped on a 4-ha plot and analyses were made of population structure, spatial distribution and spatial association of major tree species. The dominant species, F. crenata, which had the maximum DBH among the species present, had the highest stem density. However, for other species, larger-sized species had lower stem density with few smaller stems or saplings, while smaller-sized species had higher stem density with many smaller stems or saplings. Canopy trees of F. crenata were distributed randomly in the plot, while its stems in the other layers and all other species were distributed patchily. Small patches represent gap-phase regeneration. Larger patches correlate with landslide disturbance, difference in soil age, or the presence/absence of Sasa. Cluster analysis for spatial associations among species and stems in the different layers revealed that the forest community consists of several groups. One main group was formed on sites not covered with Sasa. This group contained a successional subgroup (from Betula grossa to Acer mono and/or F. crenata) initiated by landslide disturbance and a subgroup of tree species that avoid Sasa. Another group was formed on sites with mature soils covered largely with Sasa. This contained associations of canopy trees of F. crenata and smaller-sized tree species such as Acanthopanax sciadophylloides and Acer japonicum. It is found that the community of this old-growth beech forest is largely organized by natural disturbance and heterogeneous conditions of the forest floor (difference in soil age and presence/absence of Sasa). Summary The level of fruiting in four forest trees species (Picea sitchensis, P. abies, Pinus sylvestris and Fagus sylvatica) was monitored in Great Britain over the period 1989–1991. In addition, assessments of crown transparency were available for many of the trees for 1987 and 1988. The monitoring period encompassed severe summer droughts in 1989 and 1990, with wetter conditions in 1991. Variations in the level of fruiting in spruce and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were seen, with a marked peak in 1990. No pattern was apparent in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Coning, which was greater in trees with the least transparent crowns, had no discernible effect on the crown transparency of the conifers. Cupule production in beech was greatest in trees with the most transparent crowns, and trees with high numbers of cupules in 1990 tended to have greater crown dieback recorded in 1991.  相似文献

In this study we present the first comprehensive multivariate analysis of beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest communities in the Nordic countries. The history of beech and beech forests in Scandinavia are described. In the north, the species is climatically restrained and, at present, restricted to Denmark and the southern parts of Sweden and Norway.More than 2000 sample plots were compiled, partly from literature, partly from new and unpublished data. The material included more than 20 studies of beech forests, often recorded by different non-standardised sampling designs. Therefore, prior to data analysis, a large number of plots had to be excluded to reduce the heterogeneity of the data. Only such sample plots were considered that showed a predominance of Fagus sylvatica in the canopy, that had a size within the interval of 16–100 m2, and that could be located by geographical coordinates. All species abundance values were transformed into simple species presences, and data from different vegetation layers were merged into one.A TWINSPAN cluster analysis resulted in 15 types. Three main communities with several sub-communities and varieties can be distinguished: (1) the Fagus sylvatica-Fraxinus excelsior-Stachys sylvatica community on the most basic and fertile soils, (2) the Fagus sylvatica-Corylus avellana-Galium odoratum community on moderately fertile and acid soils, and (3) the Fagus sylvatica-Sorbus aucuparia-Deschampsia flexuosa community on very acid and oligotrophic soils. Synonyms in the recent literature on Nordic beech forests to these communities are given. An ordination with the program DECORANA confirmed the primary significance of soil acidity and nutrient status for community differentiation.p>  相似文献

Aim To improve our understanding of species range limits by studying how height growth, a trait related to plant survival, varies throughout the geographic range of Fagus sylvatica L. in France. Location The geographic range of beech in France, representing the western area of its European distribution, within which this species exhibits range distribution limits in both plains and mountainous areas. Methods A generalized linear regression model was used to link beech growth performance to environmental variables using data from 819 plots of the French National Forest Inventory (IFN) database. This model was applied to predict potential growth on 97,281 IFN plots covering the geographic range of beech in France. A kriging technique was used to interpolate estimated growth potential. Finally, the performance of plot‐based predictions of potential growth from the map (i.e. map quality) was evaluated against an independent data set. Results The beech growth performance model highlighted the major impact of climate on potential tree growth at a broad spatial scale. The relevant climatic factors were related mainly to spring cold, summer heat, and winter temperatures and rainfall. The study also revealed the predictive power of soil parameters, which explained a large proportion of the variation in potential beech growth (c. 30%). Analyses of height growth patterns near the boundary of the species range in France showed that the limit only partly coincides with the growth decline caused by climatic and soil factors. Along parts of the range limit, the predicted potential for growth was high, suggesting that in these areas the limit of the range could be explained by other factors, such as competition or constraints on reproduction. Main conclusions The spatial variation in the potential height growth of Fagus sylvatica can be explained by environmental factors and is partly correlated with its regional range limits. By identifying areas where growth potential constrains the geographic range of species, environmental growth models can help to improve our knowledge of the spatial drivers of species geographic range limits and shed light on their response to future environmental changes.  相似文献

 The influence of mycorrhizal colonization on beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) root tannin (procyanidin polymer) and its putative precursors catechin and epicatechin was investigated by high performance liquid chromatography. Seedlings planted in a sterile mixture of litter, compost, soil and sand were inoculated with brown beech ectomycorrhizas collected from a woodland (Lactarius subdulcis Bull ex Fr. ×  F. sylvatica). The seedlings were not fertilized during the first year of growth. Nonmycorrhizal control plants showed severe nutrient-deficiency symptoms on their leaves and grew less well than mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal roots contained significantly less catechin, epicatechin and procyanidin polymer than nonmycorrhizal roots. In the second year of growth, the plants were fertilized and procyanidin formation in roots was investigated. None of the fertilized plants showed mineral-deficiency symptoms. Fertilized mycorrhizal roots consistently contained significantly less catechin and epicatechin than nonmycorrhizal controls, but procyanidin polymer content varied between replicate experiments. Summary In a 35-year-old calcareous beech forest stand five beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) were felled every 2 weeks, and xylem sap was obtained by means of water displacement from the lowest trunk sections, each 100 cm in length. From mid-October 1988 to mid-October 1989 a total of 130 trees were investigated. The seasonal variations of the Ca, Mg, K and Mn contents, as well as those of pH, show four characteristic phases. Additionally, distribution of the mineral contents along the trunk was studied in four trees. The seasonal increase and decrease of xylem sap mineral contents along the trunk is shown for the characteristic phenophases. The Ca, Mg, K, and Mn contents of xylem saps were determined by means of atomicabsorptionspectrophotometry.  相似文献
