Abstract

Prochloron, a unicellular alga that combines some features of cyanophytes with others of chlorophytes, is a phylogenetic enigma. Mounting evidence from electron microscopy, comparative biochemistry and molecular biology now suggests that prochlorophytes probably arose from blue-green algal ancestors, perhaps less than 103 years ago.  相似文献

Prochlorophyta – a matter of class distinctions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Prochloron (a marine symbiont) and Prochlorothrix (from freshwater plankton) contain chlorophylls a and b; Prochlorococcus (common in marine picoplankton) contains divinyl-chlorophylls a and b. Like cyanophytes they are all clearly photosynthetic prokaryotes, but since they contain no blue or red bilin pigment they were assigned to a new algal sub-class, the Prochlorophyta. However, since their possible phylogenetic relationships to ancestral green-plant chloroplasts have not received support from molecular biology, it now seems expedient to consider them as aberrant cyanophytes. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

During the summer of 1983, cryptophytes, diatoms, cyanophytes, and the dinoflagellate, Ceratium hirundinella were most prominant among the phytoplankton of Eau Galle Reservoir. In the open water, cryptophytes and diatoms peaked in the spring, cyanophytes were most successful in the early summer, and Ceratium was dominant from mid-July until early August. In general, the sequence of events corresponded quite closely to the model of seasonal succession developed by the Plankton Ecology Group of the International Society of Limnology. To a large extent, the same pattern held in four experimental water columns. Departures from the model involved the roles of specific nutrients in diatom and cyanophyte periodicity. Diatoms began to yield to cyanophytes in late spring despite intermittent mixing and silica enrichment. Although capable of buoyancy regulation and thus well adapted to stable water columns, cyanophytes had greater increases in biomass in mixed columns, and in those columns, were most successful during a period of intermittent mixing. Cyanophyte success varied inversely with TN : TP ratios during the period of intermittent mixing, but not subsequently. By mid-July, Ceratium dominated the phytoplankton of every column except that of a mixed column in which conditions favored cyanophytes and large diatom species.  相似文献

DNA containing structures (nucleoids) were visualized by 4′, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) fluorescent staining in two groups of cyanophytes (59 filamentous oscillatorialean species and 12 coccal Synechococcus-like organisms) to test the possibility of using nucleoid morphology in cyanophyte taxonomy. The morphology of nucleoids (size, shape, and structure) in oscillatorialean species is specific for individual families. The morphology of the nucleoid in Synechococcus-like species agrees from the proposed separation of the genus Cyanothece from Synechococcus. A much different nucleoid morphology in three species of Cyanothece suggests that these species should be separated into a new genus. On the basis of other characters, the species could be returned to the genus Cyanobacterium. My results indicate that the morphology of nucleoids is a valuable character in the classification of the cyanophytes examined; thus, it is a prospective feature that could be used in the taxonomy of other groups of cyanophytes. Additionally, DAPI staining is not a complicated procedure. The new character is easy to see in samples taken from nature, both living and preserved.  相似文献

Summary

The Atlantic Oakwoods can be seen as ‘at the edge’ in two ways. First, they lie at the extreme oceanic end of a series of Quercus robur and Q. petraea woodlands which stretches eastwards from the North Atlantic coast to the continental heartland of Europe. Second, they are at the northern limit of a range of oceanic oakwoods which extends southwards to Iberia where Q. pyrenaica is an important canopy companion. This paper outlines the main variations in trees, shrubs, herbs and cryptogams that can be seen along these two climatic gradients, so as to highlight what is truly distinctive about the Atlantic Oakwoods and how we might rightly value them.  相似文献

The microphytobenthos colonizing the intertidal flats forms an important component of the Wadden Sea. Ten sampling points along a 1-km transect were studied in a fringe area of the Solthörn tidal flat, southern North Sea, in order to determine seasonal differences in the microphytobenthos. An accompanying paper deals with the major component of the flora, the diatoms; here we, focus on the minor taxonomic groups. From May 2008 to May 2009 surface sediments were collected during low tide. Variation of environmental factors as well as microphytobenthic density (abundance and chlorophyll a) were monitored. The area investigated was a mixed-sediment mudflat, with a gradient from coarse to fine. Highest biomass was obtained in summer 2008 with 215.9?±?12.6?mg chlorophyll a m–2. In late autumn the chlorophyll a concentration decreased continuously at all investigated stations. Lowest values were detected in December 2008. Species abundances varied considerably both along the transect and seasonally, depending on species-specific requirements as well as hydrodynamic conditions (tidal currents). Higher densities of benthic pro- and eukaryotic microalgae were observed in sites characterized by fine sediments. Apart from the diatoms, the most abundant microphytobenthic group was the cyanophytes. Coccoid cyanophytes, mainly Merismopedia sp., were most abundant during summer, with cell numbers up to 5.72?×?106 cells cm?2, while diatoms dominated in winter, spring and autumn. Filamentous cyanophytes, particularly Microcoleus chthonoplastes, were most abundant during autumn, while coccoid chlorophytes (spring: Chlorococcum submarinum, Crucigenia tetrapedia, Tetraselmis suecica), euglenophytes (summer: Euglena obtusa), dinophytes (autumn: Amphidinium operculatum, A. herdmanii) and cryptophytes (autumn: Hillea marina, Hemiselmis virescens) contributed to the microphytobenthos during warmer seasons. The statistical analysis confirmed that the composition of the microphytobenthos was related to sediment features and to characteristics of particular seasons.  相似文献

Carbon to chlorophyll a (C:Chl) ratios, assimilation numbers (A.N.) and turnover times of natural populations of individual species and taxonomic groups were extracted from a long-term database of phytoplankton wet-weight biomass, chlorophyll a concentrations, and primary production in Lake Kinneret, Israel. From a database spanning more than a decade, we selected data for samples dominated by a single species or taxonomic group. The overall average of C:Chl was highest for cyanophytes and lowest for diatoms, while chlorophytes and dinoflagellates showed intermediate values. When converting chlorophyll a to algal cellular carbon this variability should be taken into account. The variability in C:Chl within each phylum and species (when data were available) was high and the variability at any particular sampling date tended to be greater than the temporal variability. The average chlorophyll a-normalized rate of photosynthetic activity of cyanophytes was higher and that of the dinoflagellates lower than that of other phyla. Turnover time of phytoplankton, calculated using primary productivity data at the depth of maximal photosynthetic rate, was longest in dinoflagellates and shortest in cyanophytes, with diatoms and chlorophytes showing intermediate values. The more extreme C:Chl and turnover times of dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria in comparison with chlorophytes and diatoms should be taken into consideration when employed in ecological modeling.  相似文献

Cyanophyte-like prokaryotes are widely presumed to be the progenitors of eukaryote plastids. A few rare protistan species bearing cyanophyte-like cyanelles may represent intermediate stages in the evolution of true organelles. Cyanophyte DNA disposition in the cell, so far as is known from electron microscopy, seems uniform within the group and distinctly different from the several known arrangements of DNA in plastids. Therefore a survey of representative cyanophytes and protistan cyanelles was undertaken to determine whether forms reminiscent of plastids could be found. DNA-specific fluorochromes were utilized, along with epifluorescent microscopy, to study the DNA arrangement in situ in whole cells. Only the endospore (baeocyte)-forming Cyanophyta contained more than one, centrally located DNA skein per cell, and then only for the period just preceding visible baeocyte formation. Such forms might, with modification, presage the “scattered nucleoid” DNA disposition found in plastids of several groups, including Rhodophytes, Cryptophytes, Chlorophytes and higher plants. The DNA arrangement in cyanelles of two protists, Cyanophora and Glaucocystis, appear different from each other and possibly related to, respectively, the cyanophytes Gloeobacter and Synechococcus. Cyanelles of the third protist, Glaucosphaera, like the cells of the unique prokaryote Prochloron, appear to have multiple sites of DNA, somewhat similar to those of the “scattered nucleoid” line of plastid evolution. No obvious precursor of the “ring nucleoid” or other types of plastid DNA conformation was found.  相似文献

Abstract

The new combination Tetralophozia filiformis (Steph.) E. Urmi is proposed for Chandonanthus filiformis Steph. So far this species has been known only from Asia and N. America. Recent collections show it to occur also in Europe, in the Cantabrian Mts., Spain. Here it grows in sheltered places on siliceous rocks in oceanic conditions. From Tetralophozia setiformis (Ehrh.) Schljak. (=Chandonanthus setiformis) it is distinguished by its smaller size, the leaf lobes are always more than twice as long as wide and their margins are not inflexed towards the stem.  相似文献

Intensive sampling of a small temperate lake of the Araucanian region (Argentina), revealed changes in the demography of Bosmina longirostris when the diatom Asterionella formosa density increased (to 54 000 cells ml–1). Bosmina population behaviour in the field was consistent with the idea that large numbers of Asterionella caused its starvation. Individuals were actually colourless and fecundity dropped to zero, as was evident when Asterionella reached 99.4% of total phytoplankton biovolume. Since cyanophytes, as a whole, are scarce in these lakes, we propose that the flagellate/diatom ratio has a direct effect on cladoceran demography.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Tracer technic has proved to be an excellent tool in the study of predator-prey relationships among the foraminifera. More than fifty axenic species of protists including diatoms, dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, chrysophytes, cyanophytes, bacteria and yeasts were tested as potential food for Allogromia sp (NF), A. laticollaris, Am. monia beccarii, Quinqueloculina spp, Rosalina floridana, Anomalina sp, Elphidium sp, Spiroloculina hyalina, Globigerina bulloides, and Globorotalia truncatulinoides. Although many types of potential food are present in the environment, foraminifera select only certain organisms. The yeasts, cyanophytes, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes and most bacteria tested were not eaten. Selected species of diatoms, chlorophytes and bacteria were eaten in large quantity. Three additional factors affect feeding: the “age” of the food organism, the “age” of the foraminifer or its position in the life cycle, and the concentration of the food. Feeding by foraminifera on most food is erratic below a concentration of 103 organisms and is approximately directly proportional to concentration within a range of 103-106 organisms per 10 ml experimental tube. A natural bloom of Protelphidium tisburyensis was analyzed. A high concentration of 6 species of diatoms characterized the community. A “bloom”-feeder hypothesis for foraminiferal nutrition is presented.  相似文献

Abstract

The dominant algae colonizing hypogean sites are usually epilithic cyanophytes which are often associated with chlorophytes and diatoms, and sometimes mosses. High relative humidity and extremely low photon fluxes characterize the environment in which a prevalence of shade-adapted species is supposed. The interactions with the substrate and the light adaptation of the algae encountered is discussed also in relation to biodeterioration processes. The taxa occurring in hypogea are reported in comparison with cave vegetation. The phototrophic communities support the growth of abundant bacterial populations.  相似文献

The upper temperature limit for the growth of chlorophyllous cyanophytes was estimated at about 63–64 C by observations of field populations and by the growth of culture isolates at that temperature. Several isolates of Mastigocladus laminosus were made from different Iceland springs and temperatures. A few continued to grow at 62 C and one at 64 C. M. laminosus was the cyanophyte in Iceland tolerant of the highest temperature. The several species or races of narrow-cell-form Synechococcus, which almost exclusively inhabit North American and other springs above 62 C and up to about 74 C, were not found in Iceland. According to my observations and those of others, a maximum of 6–8 cyanophyte species occur in waters over 45 C in all of Iceland. Many times this number has been reported from continental regions of great thermal activity. The low number of species and the absence of particular thermophilic cyanophytes may result from inadequate dispersal from other thermal areas since the end of the last glaciation. Environmental inadequacies (e.g., winter darkness, or minimum-maximum concentrations of nutrients or other solutes) may also be factors in the absence of certain species.  相似文献

Background: Over 10,000 island endemic angiosperms are highly threatened by extinction. Yet, few of these species have the temporal change in their range documented and quantified, particularly within a potentially informative context of a long period of botanical study.

Aim: Here, we used Roussea simplex a mono-specific genus endemic to Mauritius, itself an island with long botanical history and advanced habitat destruction extent, to investigate how the distribution and population of this model oceanic island plant changed through time.

Methods: All known localities and population size estimates were compiled from published literature, herbarium specimens, surveys and personal communications to estimate changes in population size, extent of occurrence and area of occupancy and investigate main distribution patterns.

Results: Roussea simplex survives in nine high elevation sites. Since the 1930s, its range halved relative to its maximum known distribution and its population size decreased much faster than direct habitat loss would predict. It now qualifies as Endangered according to the IUCN Red List categories.

Conclusions: Even in an extremely deforested island, endemic plant population decline may be driven more by diminishing habitat quality than diminishing habitat extent. This renders habitat protection alone insufficient, therefore addressing ecological interactions is vital to stem population decline.  相似文献

Background: A key current issue in studies of global CO2 is the cause of the recent pronounced changes in the timing (phase) and amplitude of its annual cycle.

Aim: To use a sensitivity analysis in order to identify the most influential parameters in a new four-box diffusion model of global CO2 transport.

Methods: A new diffusion model of global atmospheric transport is developed, implemented by optimisation and used to assess the effects of oceanic, terrestrial and anthropogenic CO2 fluxes on the annual CO2 cycle. As the terrestrial phenology of living organisms in the temperate zones is identified as the central process of concern an improved phenological model for the temperate zones is proposed and used in up-scaling from plant to planet.

Results: The diffusion model is found to be able to mimic many of the features observed by the GLOBALVIEW-CO2 network, including the global trend, latitudinal gradient, and annual waveform.

Conclusions: It is concluded that, out of five rival hypotheses considered at the outset, the springtime phenology of terrestrial biomes is the dominant controller of recent changes to the annual CO2 cycle.  相似文献

Summary

It is pointed out the widness of the imposing beechtree-grove, which in assembly of vulcanic Cimini mountains of Latium, covers the area of M. Fogliano (963 metres) to a level slightly above lake of Vico (507 m.). It means largely underneath the normal inferior altimetric limit of the beechtree in the Apennines.

It represents a climatic derelict of pluvial oceanic times, still in equilibrium with the local actual ambient characterized by frequent and heavy rains (one of the most rainy areas in Latium) and permanent humidity, due also becouse of the lower lake, and by relatively low medium temperatures. The above mentioned depression of the beechtree occurs in different areas of Latium.

Other plants included in the beechtree-grove are wisley the same of those of Central (or Southern) Europe, testifying thearefore the derelict of ancient forest once larger, joined to the Medium Apennines, untill the “subatlantic” stage of the past glacial era. But it is remarcable the vegetative prevalence of Western oceanic components (as Narcissus pöeticus, etc.) and endemic plants (as Allium pendulinum, etc.) which perhaps mark a Tyrrenian facies of the Apenninian forest of beechtree. The beechtree-grove of M. Fogliano is lapped, but slightly interfered by usual “Mediterranean” vegetation only.  相似文献

The aquatic plant communities of the irrigation channels of the Transvase Tajo-Segura project are described in order to assess the various options for the control of nuisance vegetation. The low flow rate permits relatively complex planktonic assemblages in addition to epipelic cyanophytes, diatoms and chlorophyes. The only macrophytes to establish themselves in the bottom sediment and form well developed mats were Cladophora glomerata and Potamogeton pectinatus. The water quality of these channels is characterised by high temperature, pH, conductivity and sulphate and chloride concentrations. Moreover, the channels may remain dry for several months.  相似文献

Epiphytes of Paralemanea catenata (Kützing) Vis & Sheath (Rhodophyta) were studied on material from the River Dyje in National Park Podyjí. Longitudinal sections of the thalli were made with help of Cryo Cut Microtome techniques. The epiphytic cyanophytes Xenococcus kerneri Hansgirg and Chamaesiphon minutus (Rostafinski) Lemmermann were recognized on the cortex of the thalli. Our observations of the determined species are discussed.  相似文献

Introduction. The best sites for oceanic bryophytes are typically in ravines that offer good potential for hydroelectric power (HEP) development. This preliminary study is the first to investigate population change in oceanic bryophytes of conservation concern at a site subject to HEP development.

Methods. Populations of five hyperoceanic liverworts were measured, Aphanolejeunea microscopica, Drepanolejeunea hamatifolia, Harpalejeunea molleri, Jubula hutchinsiae and Radula voluta, at two time periods, before and after HEP installation.

Results. Spanning almost four years, results reveal a dynamic system, with significant change in fine-scale distribution patterns, including many colony extinctions and colonisations. About 23% of colony losses of A. microscopica, D. hamatifolia and H. molleri appeared to result from exclusion by larger bryophytes, involving at least 17 species, in particular Ctenidium molluscum.

Conclusions. Inference with regards to effects of the HEP is not advised from this type of preliminary before and after study, based at a single site without controls. Given rapid recent growth of small HEP development and the enormous future potential, both in Britain and around the world, it is important to build upon this work and undertake comprehensive studies to detect possible impacts on bryophytes of conservation concern.  相似文献

Abstract

Researches on the vegetation of Valsesia. VII. «Notholaena marantae» (L.) Desv. in the Sesia Valley. — It's hereby described a station of Notholaena marantae (L.) Desv. near «Giavina Rossa» (Valsesia-Piedmont, Italy). This is probably the only place in the whole valley. The fern grows in a kind of ground formed by peridotitic rocks and on a little dry wall supporting the debris. The fern presence in a wooden valley, and under an oceanic climate could be a very interesting subject for hystorical geobotanic researches.  相似文献
