Summary

Observations on growth and development of Salvia longistyla Benth., in several photoperiodic and termoperiodic conditions, both natural and artificial, were performed. The conclusions of my work are the following

I° - It has been proved that Salvia longistyla is a typical short-day plant and that its critical point of reaction lies approssimately on the 14 hours, when the average night-temperature is about 18°C; the flowering does not succeed if the night-temperature is decidedly below 15°C.

II° - The plant' requires short-day conditions not only for the formation of the flower buds, but also for the subsequent development, i. e. the full bloom; consequently the plant belongs to Eguchi's S. S. class (short day-plant for both the manifestations).

III. - Under natural conditions, in our latitude, Salvia longistyla flowers only in Autumn, because only in this season we have suitable photoperiod and concomitantly suitable night-temperature. In Spring, though the day is short, the night-temperature is not sufficiently high; in Winter and in Spring, the flowering is possible only in a warm green-house, with a night-temperature of about 18°C. In orange green-houses Salvia longistyla can continue the flowering begun in Autumn; during Winter and Spring new blooms do not succeed, just because the night-temperature, in such green houses, is never sufficiently high.

IV. - We can obtain fruiting only by artificial pollination (lack of natural pollination agency).

V. - The basal branches do not flower even in optimal photo- and termoperiodical conditions (which allow apical flowering) on acount of a mechanism of correlative inhibition.

VI. - The elongation of the internodes is relatively inhibited at a very long photoperiod, differently from what we observe in most plants.

These prerogatives, verified in repeated experiments, are in perfect accordance with the characteristics of the ambient in which the plant is naturally diffused (Mexico). The altitude and latitude of the stations in which the plant has usually been found, have a short photoperiod all year long, and temperatures (also night-temperatures) costantly suitable for a good growth and bloom. The plants, in the natural ambient, are perennial and bushy. The pluri-annuality can be referred to the flowering inhibition of the lateral and basal branches, that takes place in a specimen and that keeps on for a long time, also after the full flowering of the principal axis. The basal shoots show a tendency to the vegetative growth, even though the external conditions are suitable to the flowering of the apical parts of the plant. Therefore we must attribute the pluriannuality of S. longistyla to this correlative flower-inhibiting mechanism.  相似文献

Abstract

Germination and growth of ABIES ALBA mill. in different light and temperature conditions. — The results of a research on white fir from different localities are summarized as follows:

a) Germination of seeds from three italian localities (Tuscany, lat. 43°, 44'; Abruzzo, lat. 41°, 52'; Calabria, lat. 38°, 33') has been tested in several ecological conditions (temperature, light and chilling); it has been found that 22 °C, 8 hrs. of light and a 3 weeks prechilling at 5 °C, are stimulating conditions for all the seeds. The Cala-brian seeds seem the most reactive.

b) Growth in different photoperiodic conditions has been tested on seedlings from the Appennine, from France (lat. 49°, 10') and Poland (lat. 49°, 39'). Growth is evidently stimulated by long-day conditions in all the seeds experimented and growth acceleration touches its maximum in the Calabrian seedlings, provided they germinated at 12°C in the ligth.

It has been concluded that Calabrian Abies behaves as a Biotype, evidently distinguished from all the others, and an ecological explanation of this behaviour has been attemped.  相似文献

Objectives

Decaying wood samples were collected, and actinomycetes were isolated and screened for laccase production. The identity of the efficient laccase-producing isolate was confirmed by using a molecular approach. Fermentation conditions for laccase production were optimized, and laccase biochemical properties were studied.

Results

Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, the isolate coded as HWP3 was identified as Streptomyces sp. LAO. The time-course study showed that the isolate optimally produced laccase at 84 h with 40.58?±?2.35 U/mL activity. The optimized physicochemical conditions consisted of pH 5.0, ferulic acid (0.04%; v/v), pine back (0.2 g/L), urea (1.0 g/L), and lactose (1 g/L). Streptomyces sp. LAO laccase was optimally active at pH and temperature of 8.0 and 90 °C, respectively, with remarkable pH and thermal stability. Furthermore, the enzyme had a sufficient tolerance for organic solvents after 16 h of preincubation, with laccase activity?>?70%. Additionally, the laccase maintained considerable residual activity after pretreatment with 100 mM of chemical agents, including sodium dodecyl sulphate (69.93?±?0.89%), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (93.1?±?7.85%), NaN3 (96.28?±?3.34%) and urea (106.03?±?10.72%).

Conclusion

The laccase's pH and thermal stability; and robust catalytic efficiency in the presence of organic solvents suggest its industrial and biotechnological application potentials for the sustainable development of green chemistry.

Summary

The author has studied the flora of the little islands of Northe-West Sardinia. In a former note he has referred on Isola Piana, in this one he refers on: Isola Rossa, Isola dei Porri, and Isola Foradada.

After having done the census of the species, notifying particularly the dominant ones and after having put in evidence the principal plant communities he kept his attention on some endemic species two of which are probable endemisms new to the science: Olea europaea L. v. latifolia (mihi) and Smilax aspera L. v. inermis (mihi), coming to the conclusion:

1°) The study should confirm the hypothesis that in the little islands may be manteined species, or ancient in regression, or recent in variation the recessive characters of which would be substracted to overcome of the dominant charaters of a largest population;

2°) The florae of the four islands, for theier geographical position are the expression of the Mediterranean half-dry climate;

3°) They present their plant communities from which springs the autonomy of the different «Ecoidi» with theier different predominance established by the equilibrium attained in them.  相似文献

Abstract

A series of observations were made on the life cycle, phenology, and germination capacity of Galantbus nivalis L., Corydalis cava Schw. et Krt., Anemone nemorosa L., Symphytum tuberosum L., Allium ursinum L., Aegopodium podagraria L., and Campanula rapunculoides L. The studies were conducted in field, in the Arboretum of the Botanical Garden of Padua, in experimental field chambers, and in growth cabinets maintained at temperature of 4°, 15° and 25°C. The various stages of life cycle of plants require different optimal thermoperiods. High temperature induce dormancy in A. nemorosa and S. tuberosum, while in G. nivalis and A. ursinum the rest period at the end of the vegetative cycle, is not broken by temperature treatments. A. podagraria and C. rapunculoides respond with a different morphogenesis to different temperatures. Temperature change (in the controlled conditions from one constant temperature to another) induced subsequent stage development. Vernalization is essential for all the species under study. However the minimum temperature for vernalization and the duration of exposure at this temperature varies in different species.

The life cycle observed of the various species may be considered as examples of different types of adaptation to a same environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Callus cultures were established for Aster sedifolius and Aster caucasicus, two Aster species used in natural medicine for their anticancer, antibacterial and antiviral activities attributed to the high content of antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols and ascorbate. The effects of growth medium and light condition on the induction and growth rate of callus from leaf, petiole and root explants are reported. Callus induction and proliferation depended on the genotype and the experimental conditions. In particular, a profuse callus culture was obtained from leaf explants grown in the light on medium supplemented with 2,4-D (0.1 mg l?1) for A. caucasicus and on medium supplemented with 2,4-D (0.44 mg l?1) plus 6-benzil-ammino-purine (BAP) (0.22 mg l?1) for A. sedifolius. The content of total polyphenol and ascorbic acid was estimated in leaf and petiole explants of in vivo plants and in the relative derived calli. In calli, polyphenol content was lower than in the corresponding in vivo organs. Furthermore, the total ascorbic acid content decreased in calli while the reduced ascorbic acid pool increased. These findings demonstrate that Aster callus cultures produce antioxidant compounds and as such might be a model system to investigate the regulation and production of these important metabolites.  相似文献

Abstract

Red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is a prominent pest of stored products particularly cereal flour. Since resistance of this pest to common chemical insecticides is well documented, we were examined the synergistic/antagonistic interaction between Satureja hortensis L., Trachyspermum ammi L., Ziziphora tenuior L., Cuminum cyminum L. and Foeniculum vulgare Miller essential oils, ethanolic extracts and powders with Diatomaceous earth (DE) against T. castaneum adults under laboratory conditions at 27 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and continuous darkness. We assayed repellency of ethanolic extracts and essential oils of mentioned plants on the pest. Results showed that DE had high toxicity to the pest. Plant essential oils and ethanolic extracts (except ziziphora) synergized the performance of DE. Nevertheless, plant powders elicited antagonistic effects (except ziziphora that exhibited synergistic effect). The most repellent EO and extract was cumin which exhibited mean repellency value on adult insect equivalent to 92.58 and 51.47%, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present study, culture conditions of Streptococcus equi was optimized through Box–Behnken experimental design for hyaluronic acid production. About 0.87?gL?1 of hyaluronic acid was produced under the determined conditions and optimal conditions were found as 38.42?°C, 24?hr and 250?rpm. The validity and practicability of this statistical optimization strategy were confirmed relation between predicted and experimental values. The hyaluronic acid obtained under optimal conditions was characterized. The effects of different conditions such as ultraviolet light, temperature and enzymatic degradation on hyaluronic acid produced under optimal conditions were determined. 118?°C for 32?min of autoclaved HA sample included 63.09 µg mL?1 of d-glucuronic acid, which is about two-fold of enzymatic effect. Cytotoxicity of hyaluronic acid on human dermal cells (HUVEC, HaCaT), L929 and THP-1 cells was studied. In vitro effect on pro or anti-inflammatory cytokine release of THP-1 cells was determined. Although it varies depending on the concentration, cytotoxicity of hyaluronic acid is between 5 and 30%. However, it varies depending on the concentration of hyaluronic acid, TNF-α release was not much increased compared to control study. Consequently, purification procedure is necessary to develop and it is worth developing the bacterial hyaluronic acid.  相似文献

Abstract

Wheel‐running activity of forty antelope ground squirrels, Ammospermophilus leucurus, was monitored for several months in both an outdoor cage and in the laboratory. The squirrels demonstrated a highly diurnal pattern which persisted in “constant conditions.” After removal from the field the initial free‐running period was close to 24 hrs, but typically lengthened in a nearly linear fashion at least for the first few months. There was no evidence of any difference in this trend for squirrels, in D/D, L/L 100 lx, 250 lx or 1200 lx. Eventually, about 90 percent of the squirrels had periods longer than 24 hrs.

The synchronizing capacity of the natural photoperiod was used to “catch the free‐running rhythm” and thereby demonstrate a response curve. Synchronization occurred by a shortening of the period when the time of sunrise was between 125° and 0° (subjective night) and by a lengthening of the period when the time of sunrise was between 0° and 125° (subjective day).

To more thoroughly examine the underlying mechanisms of phase control, phase‐response curves based on sixty one light‐pulse experiments were constructed. Comparisons of curves based on 6‐hr and 15‐min pulses, showed that the integral action of light is important (i.e., the entire pulse is involved in phase shifting). It was found that light pulses not only affected the phase of the rhythm but also the phase. Large phase shifts were usually associated with decreases in free‐running period. Several hypotheses on the controlling mechanisms were advanced.  相似文献

Abstract

INIBITION OF GREENING BY INDOLACETIC ACID AND ITS PREVENTION BY ASCORBIC ACID. — Stem apex portions from etiolated pea plants (Pisum sativum var. Alaska) were grown in a dark room thermoregulated at 25°C until the development of the third internode and after excission kept in light for 20 hours. Greening on these isolated portions is sharply inhibited by indolacetic acid at concentrations varying from 10?3M to 10?6M. The highest inhibition, that is about 40%, correspònds to the highest concentrations (10?3M). A scarcely significant stimulus is registered at the 10?6M concentration of indolacetic acid.

Using much younger material (plants 4 days instead of 8 days old) the inhibition caused by treatments with indolacetic acid results greater (the maximum inhibition, always at 10?3M, reaches about 60%), perhaps as a consequence of the greatest concentration of endogenous auxin.

Treatments with ascorbic acid, both in the reduced and oxydized form, at concentrations ranging from 10?2M to 10?1M do not cause any variation in respect of controls.

Ascorbic acid supplied with indolacetic acid greatly reduces the inhibiting effect on greening: some 40% of the inhibition by 5 × 10?4M indolacetic acid being suppressed by 10?3M ascorbic acid. Also for the greening process an antagonism between the action of ascorbic acid and that of auxin is thus demonstrated; which was previously demonstrated for various physiological processes (distension growth, water retention, cell multiplication, abscission, etc.) by several studies carried on in this Institute.  相似文献

Abstract

The optimal fermentation medium and conditions for mycelial growth and water-soluble exo-polysaccharides production by Isaria farinosa B05 were investigated. The medium components and fermentation conditions were optimized according to the one at a time method, while the concentration of medium components was determined by the orthogonal matrix method. The results showed that the optimal fermentation medium was as follows: sucrose 3.5% (w/v), peptone 0.5%, yeast extract 0.2%, K2HPO4 0.1%, and MgSO4 0.05%. The suitable fermentation conditions were as follows: initial pH 7.0, temperature 25°C, medium volume 75 mL/250 mL, inoculum volume 5% (v/v), time 5d. In such optimal nutrition and environmental conditions, the maximal mycelial yield was 2.124 g/100 mL after 4 day's fermentation, while maximal water-soluble exo-polysaccharides production reached 2.144 g/L after 5 day's fermentation.  相似文献

The effect of acclimation to 10 °C on the leaf content of ascorbic and oxalic acids, was investigated in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). At 10 °C the content of ascorbic acid in leaves increased and after 7 days it was about 41% higher than in plants remaining under a 25 °C/20 °C day/night temperature regime. In contrast, the content of oxalate, remained unchanged. Transfer to 10 °C increased the ascorbic but not the oxalic acid content of the leaf intercellular washing fluid (IWF). Oxalate oxidase (OXO EC 1.2.3.4) activity was not detected in extracts of leaf blades. Therefore, oxalic acid degradation via OXO was not involved in the control of its content. Our results show that low temperature acclimation increases nutritional quality of spinach leaves via a physiological rise of ascorbic acid that does not feed-forward on the content of oxalic acid.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The enhancing effects of yeasts on the viability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) under acidic conditions were investigated. Meyerozyma guilliermondii, coaggregative with both LAB strains under acidic conditions, significantly enhanced the viability of Lactobacillus pentosus and L. paracasei in pH 3.0 lactic acid (LA) buffer at 10°C (p < 0.05). Non-coaggregative yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and Cyberlindnera saturnus) also significantly enhanced the LAB viability (p < 0.05), and physical contact between LAB and yeasts was not essential for the viability-enhancing effect, indicating that the coaggregation had no relation to the enhancing mechanism. Although yeast metabolites and LA assimilation had no enhancing effect, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decreased after yeast coincubation, and H2O2 elimination improved L. pentosus viability. H2O2 elimination alone did not sufficiently improve L. paracasei viability, but the addition of antioxidants was effective. These results suggest that the antioxidant activity of yeast increased the LAB viability under acidic conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to find optimal conditions for pre-hydrolysis in the new wood saccharification process with strong sulfuric acid. In the experiment, the hydrolysis rate of resistant fraction of pentosan of white birch (Shirakamba, Betula platyphylla Sukatchev var. japonica Hara) wood and the decomposition rate of xylose are measured in acid concentrations ranging from 30 to 60% at temperatures ranging from 30 to 90°C. The hydrolysis of resistant pentosan of white birch and the decomposition of xylose are the first-order reactions. The first-order reaction constant of hydrolysis of resistant pentosan, kB min-1, is expressed by the following empirical equations as the function of percentage concentration of sulfuric acid, C, and reaction temperature described by absolute temperature, T°K, ranging from 40 to 80°C:

where sulfuric acid concentration is 60%.

The first-order reaction constant of decomposition of xylose, k2 min-1, is expressed by the following empirical equation as the function of sulfuric acid strength described by acidity function, H0, and reaction temperature described by absolute temperature, T°K, in sulfuric acid concentrations ranging from 30 to 60% at temperatures within the range of 40 to 100°C.

Optimal conditions of hyper thermal (HT) acid hydrolysis of the Saccharina japonica was determined to a seaweed slurry content of 12% (w/v) and 144 mM H2SO4 at 160 °C for 10 min. Enzymatic saccharification was carried out at 50 °C and 150 rpm for 48 h using the three enzymes at concentrations of 16 U/mL. Celluclast 1.5 L showed the lowest half-velocity constant (Km) of 0.168 g/L, indicating a higher affinity for S. japonica hydrolysate. Pretreatment yielded a maximum monosaccharide concentration of 36.2 g/L and 45.7% conversion from total fermentable monosaccharides of 79.2 g/L with 120 g dry weight/L S. japonica slurry. High cell densities of Clostridium acetobutylicum and Clostridium tyrobutyricum were obtained using the retarding agents KH2PO4 (50 mM) and NaHCO3 (200 mM). Adaptive evolution facilitated the efficient use of mixed monosaccharides. Therefore, adaptive evolution and retarding agents can enhance the overall butanol and butyric acid yields from S. japonica.

Summary

Continuing the experiments on the action of Gibberellic acid on growth and development of herbaceous plants, the Authors have examined once more several species which require “long day” for espletion of some phases of their reproductive development.

The principal aim was to bring into evidence whether Gibberellic acid can really substitute for some manifestations of the reproductive development itself, or whether some apparent manifestations of reproductive development provoked by this substance are due primarily to modifications of vegetative processes determinated by it.

The experiments were carried out on Papaver somniferum L., Centaurea calcitrapa L., Oenothera acaulis L., Aethusa Cynapium L. and Myosurus minimus L.

Results obtained on Papaver somniferum demonstrate that Gibberellic acid accelerates the macroscopic flowering manifestations under short day conditions of plants already induced to flowering, substituting in this for the effect of “long day” factor in so far as concerns the lengthening of the floral axis. No experiments which can establish whether Gibberellic acid may have an action on specific processes involved in the transition to the reproductive stage, have so far been conducted on Papaver.

Experiments on Centaurea calcitrapa have revealed that Gibberellic acid, treatment though promoting in plants manteined in short-day conditions a “bolting” effect simulating that obtained usually only at long-day, does not succeed in flowering this is true in our experimental conditions (experiments limit: 10 weeks; (photo-phase at light intensity inferior to 2000 lux). Experiments on Centaurea were also supplemented with histological observation of esperimental material.

In the experiments on Oenothera acaulis, a long-day plant only for the macroscopic development phase of floral apparatus, and indeterminate for the formation of floral primordia, has been noted that Gibb. acid can, in the long run, partly substitute for the long-day effect. However, development of floral structures at shortday, is more easily obtained if the plants are supplied, besides with Gibberellic acid, also with other stimulating and trophic substances. This and others observations may indicate that Gibberellic acid represent only one of the substances involved in the metabolism of plants under long-day conditions.

Aethusa Cynapium has furnished results similar to those obtained with Centaurea, even if within very long experimental limits some apparently indirect action of Gibberellic acid towards flowering may occurs.

Preliminary experimental data on logday Myosurus minimus L. show that Gibberellic acid can substitute sooner or later for longday requirements in flowering. In fact, two months old plants flower when Gibberellic acid is supplied under 9 hr. shortday conditions while the controls in shorday remain vegetative. We must note that Myosurus flowers better when light extension is prevalently constituted by far red radiation the effect of which is apparently substituted more easily by Gibberellic acid even if its action appears less afficient and rapid than that of supplementary illumination.  相似文献

Abstract

Researches on the water content and osmotic pressure in plants of three forest associations in the Marche. I° - The water content. — The main forest associations of the Umbro-Marchigiani Appennines are the Orneto-Quercetum ilicis, the Quercetum pubescentis (s. l.) and the Fagetum. In each of these associations a typical station has been chosen where the most important species have been followed from March to November 1963 in order to determine the seasonal variations of their water content (« T.I. »)expressed as percentage of fresh weight.

The annual curves show that the water content reaches very high levels in the early stages of plant development while it falls to lower levels later in the season when the leaves are full grown. The water content of each species follows a different course and can be considered a specific character. Taking into account the maximum and minimum levels of water content of the three groups of species a « hydric spectrum » has been worked out for the three associations.

The water content of each species has also been calculated as percentage of dry weight (imbibition percentage: « G.I. »).  相似文献

Abstract

Physiological adaptations to « aerial » life in the genus Tillandsia.—Ten « atmospheric » Tillandsia species, with different degree of adaptation to drought, were investigated to verify the occurrence of CAM and to determine their daily transpiration pattern.

Most of the species were collected during the Botanical Expeditions of the Accademia dei Lincei in Latin America in 1969 and 1971. All species had been maintained in the greenhouse of the Naples Botanical Garden during the winter months and in the open air during the warmer months, previous to experiments. The diurnal cycle of transpiration, the malic acid content and cell sap pH of the leaves were studied under outdoor conditions. Curves of malic acid and pH variations typical of CAM have been obtained for all the examined species. Moreover, the transpiration data indicate that stomata are open at night. The rates of transpiration appear to be extremely low. The highest transpiration rates refer to the species of the relatively moister habitats, the lowest to the more xeric species. Results indicate that CAM and low rates of transpiration are ecological adaptations to extremely dry habitats.  相似文献
