Abstract

Germination tests were carried out on seeds from three Italian populations of Abies alba. Seed germinability was up to 38%. HgCl2, NaClO and plant preservative mixture were used as seed‐sterilising agents. Despite chemical treatments, Papulaspora rubida and Chaetomium globosum were isolated. The possible role of these fungi in the physiology of silver fir seed germination process was discussed.  相似文献

Eleven polymorphic nuclear microsatellite markers for Abies alba Mill. were developed from an enriched genomic library. An average of 5.2 alleles per locus and a mean expected heterozygosity of 0.532 were found in a sample of 24 Abies alba individuals from different populations within Europe. These loci can be used in studies of genetic diversity for parentage analysis and for estimation of gene flow in silver fir populations. Moreover, successful amplifications were obtained for eight other Mediterranean Abies species, suggesting that these loci may be useful for similar applications in other fir species.  相似文献

Abstract

The somaclonal variation analysis was conducted on callus of 57 lines obtained by the method of somatic embryogenesis from six zygotic embryos (with different genotypes) of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) located in two mountain regions in the south of Poland. The somaclonal variation at the DNA level was estimated using RAPD markers and the data produced were used to estimate the level of similarity using Jaccard’s coefficient. For RAPD analysis, 24 ten‐nucleotide primers from the groups OPA, OPB and OPG were used. Two genotypes deriving from Krynica and My?lenice showed high genetic similarity (Jaccard’s coefficient 0.74 and 0.83), which provides a substantial chance for producing firs with the parental genotype. The remaining four genotypes showed somaclonal variation (average Jaccard’s coefficient approx. 0.5). The significance in variation of the research sites was ascertained by the ANOVA statistical test, which showed the impact of genotype, type of medium and phytohormones included in it on the variation among the fir lines bred in vitro. The somaclonal variation data in silver fir could be useful for its propagation through in vitro culture, and in generating detailed genetic maps of this species.  相似文献

The primary objective of this paper was to estimate how the mass of Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) deadwood in two decay classes affected biochemical processes and the accumulation of soil organic matter, as well as the extent of this impact. We evaluated deadwood mass, as well as the biological activity and influence of the distance from deadwood on biological activity and carbon (C) storage. The investigation was carried out in Magurski National Park, southern Poland, in four randomly selected study plots. The organic C and nitrogen contents and soil pH and texture were analysed. The study also included the determination of enzyme activities. The results obtained demonstrated that soil C storage and the biological activity of the soil were influenced by deadwood form, tree species and decay class. Significant differences in the C content in the soil between the logs of fir and pine trees were noted. With the advancement of the deadwood decomposition process, the C concentration and enzyme activity increased slightly. Lower C accumulation occurred further away from the deadwood. At a 100-cm distance from the deadwood, the influence of the logs was not evident. Higher C storage was found in the soil around the stumps than in the decaying logs. This study confirmed an important role of deadwood in forest ecosystems, i.e., maintaining species biodiversity and increasing C accumulation in the soil environment with a simultaneous increase in the biological activity of the soil.  相似文献

In order to determine the mechanical resistance of several forest tree species to rockfall, an inventory of the type of damage sustained in an active rockfall corridor was carried out in the French Alps. The diameter, spatial position and type of damage incurred were measured in 423 trees. Only 5% of trees had sustained damage above a height of 1.3 m and in damaged trees, 66% of broken or uprooted trees were conifers. Larger trees were more likely to be wounded or dead than smaller trees, although the size of the wounds was relatively smaller in larger trees. The species with the least proportion of damage through stem breakage, uprooting or wounding was European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). Winching tests were carried out on two conifer species, Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) and Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.), as well as European beech, in order to verify the hypothesis that beech was highly resistant to rockfall and that conifers were more susceptible to uprooting or stem breakage. Nineteen trees were winched downhill and the force necessary to cause failure was measured. The energy (E fail) required to break or uproot a tree was then calculated. Most Silver fir trees failed in the stem and Norway spruce usually failed through uprooting. European beech was either uprooted or broke in the stem and was twice as resistant to failure as Silver fir, and three times more resistant than Norway spruce. E fail was strongly related to stem diameter in European beech only, and was significantly higher in this species compared to Norway spruce. Results suggest that European beech would be a better species to plant with regards to protection against rockfall. Nevertheless, all types of different abiotic stresses on any particular alpine site should be considered by the forest manager, as planting only broadleaf species may compromise the protecting capacity of the forest e.g. in the case of snow avalanches.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the framework of an ongoing study on the mycorrhizal associations of silver fir (Abies alba Mill., Pinaceae), we investigated the below-ground diversity of ectomycorrhizal communities in ten field sites located in five distinct natural A. alba woods, situated in the central part of the Apennine chain (Abruzzo region, Italy). Based on macro- and microscopic features, a total of 48 morphologically distinct ectomycorrhizal types have been classified on mature trees of A. alba, 37 of which are reported here for the first time. Ectomycorrhizal morphotypes were partially characterized, and their main features described; in many cases, the relevant fungal symbiont was identified at the level of species or genus. The number of distinguishable morphotypes per site was, with few exceptions, rather homogeneous, ranging from (5) 8 to 13 (20). Comparison of morphotype occurrence revealed that only few types were encountered in five or more sampled sites, whereas the vast majority of types was less frequent. The present study revealed a considerably high species diversity of the ectomycorrhizal symbionts of A. alba in a quite restricted area, thus raising interesting questions as to the ectomycorrhizal potential of this host tree over its entire, large natural range.  相似文献

Abstract

Marine mycoflora of Portofino bay.—On a detrital limestone in Portofino bay, wood panels of Fraxinus ornus, Abies alba, Ochroma lagopus, Fagus sylvatica, Larix decidua, Pinus pinaster, Populus alba and Olea europaea have been laid as bait in different periods of the year to show the incidental seasonal influence on the installation of fungine species.

A different seasonal frequency has been noticed also concerning fouling organisms. The wooden bait has been fished out after a minimum time of 50 and a maximum of 283 days, and incubated in a moist chamber to foster growth and isolation of fungi.

Lulworthia medusa is one of the most frequent species and fructifies plentifully near corpses and holes of the isopod Limnoria tripunctata.

This ascomycete fructifies also on wood panels incubated in Petri dishes in contact with filter paper imbued with bacteria, whereas it does not fructify in culture if strips of the same paper are sterilized. It seems therefore that bacteria carry on an important role in the complex relations between isopod crustaceans and fungi; Limnoria carrying bacteria stimulated the forming of perithecia of Lulworthia. This lignicolous fungus has been isolated in two different species, according to the length of the mucillagineous appendages of the ascospora and on some physiological characters.

The presence of Trichocladium achrasporum for the Mediterranean, of Halosphaeria maritima for the Italian seas are reported for the first time; the presence of Nia vibrissa and of Humicola alopallonella is reported for the second time for Italy. Papulaspora halima has been isolated again, after protracted immersion and incubation. The partiality for temperate-cold temperatures of Cirrenalia macrocephala and of Corollospora maritima is confirmed. Other ubiquitous species are reported, and the hypothesis of Ceriosporiopsis halima flourishing in polluted water is renewed.  相似文献

Fraser fir (Abies fraseri [Pursh] Poir.) and intermediate fir (Abies balsamea [L.] Mill. var. phanerolepis Fern.) exist in small populations in the Appalachian highlands of the southeastern United States. We used ten nuclear microsatellite markers to quantify genetic variation within Fraser fir and intermediate fir, and to examine their evolutionary relationships with the widespread balsam fir (Abies balsamea [L.] Mill.). We found little genetic differentiation among these taxa, suggesting that Fraser fir might best be classified as a variety of balsam fir. The results further appear to reject the hypothesis that intermediate fir was of hybrid origin between two comparatively distantly related species. Low levels of genetic diversity suggest that intermediate fir and Fraser fir have undergone at least some genetic degradation since post-Pleistocene isolation. The results may prove important for in situ and ex situ gene conservation efforts for Fraser fir and intermediate fir, which are imperiled by an exotic insect and by global climate change.  相似文献

In high-elevation forests, growth is limited by low temperatures, while in Mediterranean climates drought and high temperatures are the main limiting factors. Consequently, the climate-growth relationships on Mont Ventoux, a mountain in the Mediterranean area, are influenced by both factors. Two co-occurring species were studied: silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), whose geographical distribution depends on their low tolerance to summer drought at low altitude/latitude, and low temperatures (late frost and short length of the growing season) at high altitude/latitude. Firs and beeches distributed along an elevational gradient were investigated using dendroecological methods. Silver fir growth was found to be more sensitive to summer water stress than beech. On the other hand, beech growth was more impacted by extreme events such as the 2003 heat wave, and negatively related to earlier budburst, which suggests a higher sensitivity to late frost. These results are confirmed by the different altitudinal effects observed in both species. Beech growth decreases with altitude whereas an optimum of growth potential was observed at intermediate elevations for silver fir. Recent global warming has caused a significant upward shift of these optima. As found for the period 2000–2006, rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall may restrain growth of silver fir. If these trends continue in the future beech might be favored at low altitudes. The species will have a reduced capacity to migrate to higher altitudes due to its sensitivity to late frosts, although an upward shift of silver fir is likely.  相似文献

Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei (Sicilian fir) is an endangered species represented by only one population of 29 adult individuals occurring in a limited area of the Madonie Range in northern Sicily (Italy). Taxonomic boundaries between this taxon and the neighboring Abies species are not clear. In this study, we used six chloroplast simple-sequence repeats (cpSSRs) to investigate the population genetic structure and the distribution of chloroplast haplotypic variation in A. nebrodensis and three of the neighboring Abies species: Abies alba (Mill.), Abies numidica (De Lann) and Abies cepha-lonica (Loud.). Our aims were to quantify the level of cpDNA differentiation within the Abies populations and to shed light on the history of A. nebrodensis. Diversity levels based on the haplotype frequency at six cpSSRs were high, especially in A. alba and A. cephalonica. In all, we found 122 haplotypes among the 169 individuals analyzed, and the four species were distinguished from each other by their haplotype composition. The majority of the haplotypes (76%) were detected only once, but in A. nebrodensis seven individuals (41% of the sample population) shared the same haplotype. Moreover, the seven A. nebrodensis individuals with an identical haplotype showed a tendency to be geographically grouped within the population"s limited range. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed a significant difference in the level of apportionment of gene diversity between the species A. alba and A. cephalonica (FST=0.191 and 0.012, respectively). AMOVA analysis conducted over all populations from the four species showed that 19% of the total cpSSR variation was attributable to differences among species, 6% was due to differences among populations within species, and 74% to differences within populations. The high percentage of unique haplotypes identified confirms the power of cpSSR haplotype analysis for identifying individual trees in individual Abies populations. Our results indicate that A. nebrodensis differs from the other three Abies species investigated and support its classification as an independent taxon. The results also showed a decreased level of variation in A. nebrodensis and suggested that the species has experienced a genetic bottleneck during the last two centuries. This contribution deals with some new aspects of the relationship between the vegetation history of Abies alba Mill. (silver fir) and genetic studies of this tree species in Switzerland. The results of the present study confirm the pollen analytical hypothesis that A. alba re-immigrated into Switzerland mainly from glacial refugia located in northern and central Italy. In particular, some distinct immigration routes of silver fir into the Ticino Alps, Valais, the Bernese Oberland (northwestern Alps), and Graubünden (eastern Alps) could be confirmed by genetic studies. Furthermore, the occurrence of other area-specific alleles indicates an additional influence from eastern European refugia on the Swiss gene pool. Moreover, genetic studies on Picea abies (L.) H. Karsten (Norway spruce) confirmed the general immigration routes from the eastern to the western Alps and from Savoie to the Jura Mountains. The combination of tree pollen and macrofossil analyses of Quaternary sediments with genetic studies of the same tree species represents a considerable research potential and is a new approach of floristic and genetic research. Effect of SO(2) and O(3) on Production of Antioxidants in Conifers   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Production of antioxidants was investigated in needles of fir (Abies alba Mill.) and spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) after exposure to low concentrations of SO2, O3, and a combination of both pollutants. Glutathione reacted most sensitively to pollutants followed by vitamin E and vitamin C. In spruce needles, the overall increase of antioxidants after exposure to air pollutants was lower than in needles of fir. SO2 was more potent than O3. Maximum increase of antioxidants was found in needles after exposure of trees to SO2 + O3.  相似文献

Improving our understanding of the potential of forest adaptation is an urgent task in the light of predicted climate change. Long‐term alternatives for susceptible yet economically important tree species such as Norway spruce (Picea abies) are required, if the frequency and intensity of summer droughts will continue to increase. Although Silver fir (Abies alba) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) have both been described as drought‐tolerant species, our understanding of their growth responses to drought extremes is still limited. Here, we use a dendroecological approach to assess the resistance, resilience, and recovery of these important central Europe to conifer species the exceptional droughts in 1976 and 2003. A total of 270 trees per species were sampled in 18 managed mixed‐species stands along an altitudinal gradient (400–1200 m a.s.l.) at the western slopes of the southern and central Black Forest in southwest Germany. While radial growth in all species responded similarly to the 1976 drought, Norway spruce was least resistant and resilient to the 2003 summer drought. Silver fir showed the overall highest resistance to drought, similarly to Douglas fir, which exhibited the widest growth rings. Silver fir trees from lower elevations were more drought prone than trees at higher elevations. Douglas fir and Norway spruce, however, revealed lower drought resilience at higher altitudes. Although the 1976 and 2003 drought extremes were quite different, Douglas fir maintained consistently the highest radial growth. Although our study did not examine population‐level responses, it clearly indicates that Silver fir and Douglas fir are generally more resistant and resilient to previous drought extremes and are therefore suitable alternatives to Norway spruce; Silver fir more so at higher altitudes. Cultivating these species instead of Norway spruce will contribute to maintaining a high level of productivity across many Central European mountain forests under future climate change.  相似文献

Photoinhibitory processes in the photosynthetic apparatus of the seedlings of Abies alba (Mill.), Picea abies (Karst.), and Pinus mugo (Turra) growing under strong shade (5 % of full solar irradiance) or full irradiance conditions were investigated in winter and spring using chlorophyll a fluorescence techniques. The extent of photoinhibition in needles as indicated by a decrease in maximum quantum yield of PS II photochemistry (Fv/Fm) depended on species, air temperature and acclimation to the light environment. Unexpectedly, shade-tolerant Abies alba was less affected by low-temperature photoinhibition compared to the other species. Fv/Fm recovered with increasing air temperature. During winter, the seedlings of Picea abies growing in shade showed higher Fv/Fm than those from full light. Non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) measured at the same levels of actinic light was higher in needles acclimated to full light except for Abies alba in February. Photosynthetic performance in term of ETR (apparent electron transfer rate) was also higher in full light-acclimated needles. In April, at ambient temperature, recovery of PS II efficiency from the stress induced by illumination with saturating light was faster in the needles of Picea abies than in those of Abies alba. The shade-acclimated needles of Abies alba and Picea abies showed greater down-regulation of PS II induced by high light stress.  相似文献

Morphological plasticity was studied for advanced regeneration trees in different light environments of the mountainous, mixed-species forests in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. The primary species in these mixtures were very shade tolerant silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), and midtolerant Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst). Seedlings/saplings of these species were selected for measurements in different stands from two different geographical locations. Various morphological traits (specific leaf area, live crown ratio, crown width to length ratio, terminal to lateral ratio, number of internodal shoots, number of shoots in terminal whorl, stem symmetry, stem orientation, stem forking) for each regenerating tree were measured during summers of 2001 and 2002. Percentage of above canopy light and stand basal area measures were used to assess the available growing space for each seedling/sapling. Regression relationships were developed for the different morphological indicators as a function of these two variables. All species adapted their morphology along the gradient in light and basal area. Spruce seemed to be less adapted to low light conditions than both fir and beech. However, no significant differences in terms of shade tolerance were detected using the above indicators. In really dense stand conditions (less than 20% above canopy light and stand basal area above 36 m2 ha−1), probability for stem forking in beech increased. In open, all three species adapted their morphology for vigorous growth. Under such conditions, spruce was better adapted than fir.  相似文献

Abstract

Observations on the genus Lulworthia Suth., on its relationship with Limnoria Menzies and records of others species. – Near a coral-limestone before Bogliasco-Genova panels of various woods: Abies alba, Ochroma lagopus, Fagus silvatica, Olea europaea, Larix decidua, Pinus pinaster, Populus alba have been laid as a bait. When they have been fished out again, after lengths of time varying from a minimum of a month and a half to a maximum of eleven months, with intervals of about one month and a half, they have often presented, besides the normal bentonic flora and fauna, numerous long, bright, septate, brown hyphae emerging from the wood. Only after the panels have been perforated by Limnoria tripunctata the perithecia of Lulworthia sp. appear; the quantity of these seems to be inversely proportional to that of the brown hyphae, which is particularly evident in Olea and Populus. In some preparations (slides) it is possible to notice connections between the brown mycelium inside the wood and the perithecia of the ascomicete. It is believed that the brown hyphae represent the vegetative stage of the strain of Lulworthia found at Bogliasco but that only after the perforation and alteration of the wood caused by Limnoria, the fungus is able to form the perithecia. The biometric values of the above mentioned Lulworthia are given. Besides, the finding of the Papulaspora halima Anast. is reported; such species, described in California in 1963, has been found in Japan, too. It is also noticed the presence of Corollospora maritima Wender., already found in other stations of the Mediterranean, and other ubiquitous species.  相似文献

Tree-ring (TR) chronologies are important instruments for the dating and provenance analyses of historical wood, as well as for climate reconstructions. However, radial growth patterns differ between tree species and growing environments. Therefore chronologies are more or less specific for a certain tree species, region and elevation. Chronologies that are restricted to more confined regions could extend the possibilities for dating, dendroprovenancing and regional climate reconstructions. In Southern Germany, the transport of wood by raft – for the supply of towns and cities with timber – has been documented since early mediaeval times. Consequently, not only local timber from the lowlands was used for construction purposes, but also alpine wood originating from sites up to the timberline. Since pronounced altitudinal gradients cause distinct climate differences, elevation-specific chronologies have the potential to improve dating precision in this region. In this contribution, a model is presented and applied in order to separate elevation-specific provenances of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) and Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Southern Germany. The model is derived from more than 2100 living TR series originating from sites between 200 and 1710 m above see level. Absolute (mean, maximum) ring-width values and the variation of ring-widths (mean sensitivity) show distinct correlations with their altitudinal provenance, reflecting improvements in growth conditions as well as the increase of their yearly variation from high over intermediate to low elevation sites. Mean ring widths and mean sensitivity values were used as independent parameters in an exponential regression model which exhibits a coefficient of determination (r2) of 77% for spruce and 74% for fir. The prediction accuracy of the elevation amounts ±300 m for spruce and ±200 m for fir within the 95% confidence interval. The model was used to estimate the elevation origin of around 5000 historical spruce and 800 historical fir series from buildings located in Southern Germany. The historical TR series covering the AD 990–1800 period were allocated by the model to elevations between 120 and 2090 m. In a second step the individual TR series were combined to elevation-specific chronologies representing low, intermediate, and high altitudinal belts. The chronologies show distinct differences among the altitudinal belts in terms of signatures and pointer years, especially for spruce. Elevation-specific chronologies are assumed to amplify the dating possibilities of ancient timber, to provide valuable evidences for the origin of historical wood, and to offer more specific proxy data for regional climate reconstructions.  相似文献

Abstract:  The objective of this study was to analyse the relationship between selected ecological factors (insolation, degree of cover of stump side surface with mosses and lichens, degree of bark and wood decomposition, wood moisture) and the numbers of Pissodes piceae in stumps of Abies alba . A total of 688 fir stumps were chosen at random in partially protected forest reserves of the Świętokrzyski National Park. Out of the analysed fir stumps, 36% (247 stumps) were inhabited by P. piceae . The mean number was 10.5 individuals of P. piceae per stump, and the mean colonization density was 107.0 individuals per m2. A geometric distribution (event probability was 0.0872) correctly approximated the real distribution of P. piceae numbers in fir stumps. Pissodes piceae was most abundant in fir stumps from about 40 cm to about 60 cm in the top surface diameter, and from about 35 cm to about 50 cm in height. This insect species preferred fir stumps occurring in places that were slightly insolated (in stand openings from about 5 m to about 15 m in diameter), devoid of moss and lichen cover, with the bark moderately decomposed, and the wood slightly decayed and moderately moist.  相似文献
