The crown of many trees is composed of a main axis and branches. All branches arise from axillary or lateral buds and two types of branches exist: proleptic and sylleptic. Proleptic branches form from buds that have undergone a rest period, typically associated with winter dormancy, whereas sylleptic branches emerge without a rest and without complete bud formation. All trees have proleptic branches; some trees with the indeterminant growth habit have both proleptic and sylleptic branches. Sylleptic branches may play an important role in determining tree growth, architecture and adaptation for many temperate-zone woody plants. We review evidence for the phenotypic plasticity of sylleptic branches and its genetic, environmental, and developmental control.  相似文献

Shoot polymorphism and patterns of sylleptic branching and shoottip abscission in two Zizyphus species are reported. Z. mauritiana(ber) produced three types of proleptic shoots: vigorous, normaland spur-type, by reiteration or following pruning;Z. oenopliahad only one type of shoot. Both species revealed up to thirdorder sylleptic branching on the vigorous proleptic shoots witha characteristic pattern and rhythm. Bud dormancy breaking chemicalsgiven as pre-pruning foliar sprays in ber, did not alter thepattern of sylleptic branching. Zizyphus oenoplia produced morefirst and second order sylleptic branches compared to Z. mauritiana.All main axes and 97% of first order sylleptic branches ofZ.mauritiana abscised their apical buds during summer, but inZ. oenoplia all main axes and 54% of first order sylleptic branchesremained active. Shoot tip abscission was almost complete onthe higher order sylleptic branches of both species. Activefirst order branches in Z. oenoplia were confined to the tophalf of the shoot. Both species had a few dormant apical budsduring the summer on their sylleptic branches, emerging mostlyfrom the middle portion of the shoot. Some of the most vigorousfirst order branches of Z. oenoplia, which had dormant apicalbuds during summer, showed a change in the frequency of syllepticbranching when they resumed growth following monsoon showers.These characteristic growth and branching patterns may haveadaptive value for canopy development under arid and semi-aridconditions. Summary Shoot systems developed over 3 successive years were investigated on 55 understorey Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. trees. Paired comparisons of preformed-leaf content of terminal buds and numbers of leaves produced on new shoots showed that neoformed leaves were produced in large numbers. Parent-shoot character was not useful in predicting numbers of preformed leaves, was better related to total leaves produced, but left the majority of the variation unexplained. This reflected the capacity of any terminal bud to produce a shoot with more or less neoformation, depending on conditions for growth. All shoots over 6 cm long produced sylleptic shoots that bore from two to many leaves and were arranged in a mesitonic pattern along the parent. Some of the longer sylleptic shoots produced lateral buds or second-order sylleptic shoots. Monopodial second-year extensions of sylleptic-shoot axes followed an acrotonic pattern, as did proleptic shoots from the few lateral buds borne on the parent shoots. Such lateral buds were more frequent on shorter parent shoots: they typically occurred near the proximal and distal ends. Duration of shoot extension was positively correlated with shoot length: terminal buds became evident as shoot extension neared cessation.  相似文献

The relationship between several growth components of a shootand the fates of the axillary meristems (developing in the axilsof the leaves) borne by that shoot were studied, on first-ordershoots of young peach trees. A comprehensive picture of thoserelationships was obtained by a discriminant analysis. Shootgrowth at meristem emergence date was characterized by internodelength, leaf-production rate and leaf-unfolding duration. Allpossible fates of axillary meristems at the end of the growingseason (i.e. blind nodes, single vegetative or flower bud, budassociations, sylleptic or proleptic shoots) were considered.Shoot-elongation rate determined meristem fates quantitatively.The number of buds produced by a meristem increased when theshoot-elongation rate increased. Qualitatively, the fate of axillary meristems was related tothe balance between shoot-growth components. If the subtendingleaf unfolded slowly, sylleptic or proleptic shoots were morelikely to develop than bud associations, for high shoot-elongationrates; and flower buds were more frequent than vegetative buds,for low shoot-elongation rates. Compared to flower buds, blindnodes appeared for similar shoot-elongation rates but longerinternodes and lower leaf-production rates. The emergence dateslightly modified the relation between shoot growth and axillary-meristemfates, but the main features held true throughout the growingseason. The relationships between shoot growth and meristem fates mayresult from competitive interactions between the growing subtendingleaf and the developing axillary meristem. High-frequency bud break and multiple shoots were induced in apical shoot buds and nodal explants ofMorus cathayana, M. lhou andM. serrata on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 0.5–1.0 mg/l 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Addition of gibberellic acid (0.4 mg/l) along with BAP induced faster bud break both in apical shoot buds and nodal explants and also enhanced the frequency of bud break in all three species. Shoot culture initiation was greatly influenced by explant type, explant age and explanting season. The shoots were successfully rooted on half-strength MS medium containing a combination of indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid and indole-3-propionic acid, each at 1.0 mg/l. Summary A family of genes expressed during early stages of shoot development were isolated fromPinus radiata. A homologue of theLEAFY/FLORICAULA flower meristem-identity genes,NEEDLY (NLY), and three MADS-box genes,PrMADS1, PrMADS2 andPrMADS3 (Pinus radiata MADS-box genes), were expressed at early stages of initiation and differentiation of reproductive (male and female) cone buds, as well as vegetative buds. Modes of transport and metabolism of 14 C-IAA and 3 H-IAA in relation to morphogenesis of axillary buds in Scrophularia arguta. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the morphogenetic role of IAA on the growth and development of axillary buds. After foliar applications of radioactive IAA for 6 h on intact plants of Scrophularia arguta Sol. the characteristics of auxin transport were studied by liquid scintillation counting, thin layer chromatography and microautoradiography. The main part of the radioactivity moved at a mean rate of 7 mm/h. Over long periods of transport, the tracers accumulated at the base of the axis and in the roots. The nodes were a little richer in 3H or 14C than the internodes. This fact seemed to be correlated with the vascular organization of this part of the stem. A very weak proportion of tracers was found in axillary buds. The radioactivity was to about 50% associated with the IAA molecule; the rest corresponded essentially to indolyl-4-acetyl-l-aspartic acid and indolyl-3-aldehyde. Tracers were mainly concentrated in the phloem along the whole axis and, to a lesser extent in some of the young differentiating metaxylem vessels, and in the medullary rays. No radioactivity was found in the cambial zone and in the mature xylem, nor in the parenchymas. These results support the view of an indirect role of IAA on the axillary bud growth and morphogenesis.  相似文献

Hormonal Regulation of Pedicel Abscission in Begonia Flower Buds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In order to analyse the hormonal regulation of flower bud shedding in Begonia, levels of indoleacetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene were determined in buds and pedicels. The translocation and metabolism of 14C-labeled IAA in pedicel segments were also studied. In a monoecious Begonia fuchsioides hybrid, abscising male flower buds contain about 1% of the IAA present in non-abscising female flowers. In a male Begonia davisii hybrid, the seasonal variation in bud drop coincides with changes in the IAA content of the buds, while also the release of IAA from the bud to the pedicel is hampered. Abscission zones of these pedicels always contain abscission promoting ethylene concentrations. The tissue is prevented from responding with abscission by IAA from the flower buds. The buds also contain ABA but without influencing abscission considerably. Pretreatment with ethylene or ABA does not affect IAA transport in pedicel segments. The rate of this transport is 4–6 mm × h–1:; the capacity increases with the transverse area. In young segments, IAA is decarboxylated and also otherwise metabolized.  相似文献

Three native Japanese Cinnamomum(Lauraceae) species exhibiteither sylleptic and proleptic, or proleptic branching dependingon species-specific types of bud-structure (hypsophyllary andscaled-buds) and geographical distribution. Major branchingshifted from sylleptic at the axils of cataphylls and hypsophyllsin the southernmost C. doederleinii(latitudinal distributionrange 24–28° N) to both sylleptic at cataphyllary-and proleptic at hypsophyllary-axils in mid-latitudinal C. daphnoides(27–33°N), and to proleptic at the axils of foliage-leaves in the northernmostspecies C. japonicum(25–37° N). In all three Cinnamomumspecies, the sylleptic and proleptic branches expand aroundthe boundary between two successive yearly shoot-modules. Thepredominant, fertile axils having branches shifted from cataphylls(n year) and hypsophylls (n-1 year) in C. doederleinii and C.daphnoides, to foliage-leaves (n-1) in C. japonicum. The budsof proleptic branches at the axils of hypsophylls and foliage-leavesinevitably experience winter dormancy, hence the shoots areequipped with protective cataphylls instead of a hypopodium.Shoot length and leaf number gradually increased from the mostdistal cataphyllary sylleptic (n) shoots towards the most basalproleptic shoots at the axils of foliage-leaves (n-1). Prolepticshoots at the axils of foliage-leaves perform similarly to mainshoots in all three Cinnamomum species studied. The relativenumber of leaves borne on proleptic shoots gradually increasedfrom C. doederleinii, to C. daphnoides, and C. japonicum. Underthe seasonal, short growing periods of temperate latitudes,the increased shoot performance and bud protection of prolepticshoots are made possible through the earlier onset of bud formation(prolepsis) at the axils of the previous year's hypsophyllsand/or foliage-leaves in trees with rhythmic growth. Endodormant grapevine buds require a period of chilling before they break and begin to grow. Custom Vitis bud cDNA microarrays (9,216 features) were used to examine gene expression patterns in overwintering Vitis riparia buds during 2,000 h of 4°C chilling. Three-node cuttings collected concurrently with buds were monitored to determine dormancy status. Chilling requirement was fulfilled after 1,500 h of chilling; however, 2,000 h of chilling significantly increased the rate of bud break. Microarray analysis identified 1,469 significantly differentially expressed (p value < 0.05) array features when 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 h of chilling were compared to 500 h of chilling. Functional classification revealed that the majority of genes were involved in metabolism, cell defense/stress response, and genetic information processing. The number of significantly differentially expressed genes increased with chilling hour accumulation. The expression of a group of 130 genes constantly decreased during the chilling period. Up-regulated genes were not detected until the later stages of chilling accumulation. Hierarchical clustering of non-redundant expressed sequence tags revealed inhibition of genes involved in carbohydrate and energy metabolism and activation of genes involved in signaling and cell growth. Clusters with expression patterns associated with increased chilling and bud break were identified, indicating several candidate genes that may serve as indicators of bud chilling requirement fulfillment. Myrsine floridana produces all of its vegetative branches, other than those resulting from pruning or damage, by syllepsis, i.e. by the continuous development of an axillary meristem into a branch without an intervening stage of rest. These sylleptic branches, produced in series, have long and conspicuous hypopodia, broad pith connections with the parent axis, and expanded prophylls. Bud dormancy may be imposed when an axillary meristem is in the axil of the sixth or seventh youngest leaf of the parent shoot. Such axillary meristems may remain at the bud stage with only two pairs of scalelike leaves but these may later give rise to inflorescences or proleptic branches. Proleptic branches lack hypopodia, have narrow piths at their bases, and a series of leaves transitional from the original prophylls to normal foliage leaves within about ten leaves. Myrsine floridana has cortical bundles in the stem, related to the formation of minor lateral leaf traces. The hypopodia of sylleptic branches, since they are leafless, do not have cortical bundles.  相似文献

Abstract

Cytokinin is often applied to apple trees to produce more shoot branches in apple seedlings. The molecular response of apple to the application of cytokinin, and the relationship between bud activation and cell cycle in apple branching, however, are poorly understood. In this study, RNA sequencing was used to characterize differential expression genes in axillary buds of 1-year grafted “Fuji” apple at 4 and 96 h after cytokinin application. And comparative gene expression analyses were performed in buds of decapitated shoots and buds of the treatment of biosynthetic inhibitor of cytokinin (Lovastatin) on decapitated shoots. Results indicated that decapitation and cytokinin increased ZR content in buds and internodes at 4–8 h, and induced bud elongation at 96 h after treatment, relative to buds in shoots receiving the Lovastatin treatment. RNA-seq analysis indicated that differential expression genes in auxin and cytokinin signal transduction were significantly enriched at 4 h, and DNA replication was enriched at 96 h. Cytokinin-responsive type-A response regulator, auxin polar transport, and axillary meristem-related genes were up-regulated at 4 h in the cytokinin and decapitation treatments, while qRT-PCR analysis showed that cell cycle and cell growth genes were up-regulated after 8 h. Collectively, the data indicated that bud activation and outgrowth might be dependent on local cytokinin synthesis in axillary buds or stems, and that bud activation preceded the activation of cell cycle genes during the outgrowth of ABs in apple shoots.

Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) is an important plant with a long history as an ornamental and a source of medicine. A protocol is outlined for adventitious bud regeneration from leaf and cotyledon explants of Chinese hawthorn (C. pinnatifida Bge. var. major N.E.Br.). Adventitious buds were induced on both the leaves of sprouting winter buds and the leaves of in vitro plants, but the percentage of bud regeneration from leaves of in vitro plants was very low—less than 6%. On N6 medium supplemented with 31.08 μM BA and 9.67 μM NAA, the percentages of bud regeneration from leaves of sprouting winter buds of cultivars “Liaohong” and “Qiujinxing” were 31.4% and 17.6%, respectively. The regeneration abilities of three kinds of cotyledon explants, immature cotyledon, mature cotyledon, and cotyledon leaf, were compared. The percentage of bud regeneration from cotyledon leaves was higher. On MS media supplemented with 4.44 μM BA and 4.54–9.08 μM TDZ, the percentages of bud regeneration from cotyledon leaves of cultivars “Qiujinxing” and “Xiajinxing” were 27.7 ± 7.8% and 20.1 ± 4.7%, respectively, and the numbers of buds per explant were 5.9 ± 1.6 and 3.2 ± 0.7, respectively. On B5 medium supplemented with 2.22 μM BA, 2.32 μM Kn, and 0.57 μM IAA, adventitious buds grew quickly and 80–100% of buds developed into shoots. The shoots rooted successfully with the two-step rooting method. Ninety days after transplantation, more than 80% plants were survived. This system of adventitious bud regeneration from leaf and cotyledon explants could be useful for the genetic transformation and polyploidization of Chinese hawthorn.  相似文献

The numbers of nodes on single flush terminal and axillary shootmodules were determined in a range of Persea species and cultivars.They were compared with node numbers in apical and axillarybuds to investigate whether preformation or neoformation ofnodes occurred. Mean number of nodes on terminal shoots was14 for vegetative shoot modules and 21 for reproductive shootmodules, and was similar across species, cultivars, rootstocks,locations and climates. In the cultivar 'Hass', numbers of nodeson axillary shoot modules were variable, and lower than thosefor primary shoot modules forming the dominant growth axis ofannual growth modules. There was a mean of 12 nodes for vegetativeproleptic shoot modules, 15 for reproductive proleptic shootmodules and six for sylleptic shoot modules, which were invariablyvegetative. All nodes were preformed within both apical andaxillary proleptic buds. This was not the case in syllepticbuds, which burst contemporaneously with extension of the parentaxis. The majority (63%) of reproductive buds formed indeterminatecompound inflorescences. Floral buds ofBrowallia demissa, at three stages of development, were cultured on Nitsch and Nitsch basal medium. The supplements used include IAA; several cytokinins— benzyladenine, kinetin and 6-benzyl-9 tetrahydropyran-adenine (SD 8339); gibberellic acid (GA3); 2, 3, 5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA); arginine and cysteine. All three stages of floral buds failed to complete development. In some treatments stages II and III produced callus and/or roots from the morphological basal end. Cytokinins promoted bud formation whereas both IAA and GA3 depressed bud formation The shoots differentiatedin vitro were capable of setting flowers, fruits and seeds in all the treatments. The seeds were viable. Comparative studies of development of flowersin vivo andin vitro were made. In some treatments the flowers exhibited abnormal corolla, and roecium and gynoecium. Factors affecting normal bud initiation, organization and development are discussed.  相似文献

The character of branching for two chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium) cvs. Jinghai and Jingyun was observed, and the changes of endogenous hormones in apical and lateral buds were investigated to determine the relationship between the pattern of hormone distribution, apical dominance, and lateral bud outgrowth. The growth rate of Jinghai lateral buds was higher than that of Jingyun. In vegetative growth stage, IAA level in apical buds of Jingyun was significantly higher than in Jinghai. After flower induction, IAA level in apical buds of two cultivars decreased remarkably, but the IAA level decreased in Jingyun faster than in Jinghai. These results showed that the higher was the IAA level in apical buds the stronger was inhibition of lateral bud outgrowth. An increase in IAA and iP/iPA and a decrease in ABA concentrations were closely associated with lateral bud growth alterations in chrysanthemum.  相似文献

Summary Protocols for both axillary bud proliferation and shoot organogenesis of Euphorbia pulchurrima Winter RoseTM were developed using terminal buds and leaf tissues. Greenhouse-grown terminal buds were placed on Murashige-Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with various concentrations of either benzlyaminopurine (BA) or thidiazuron (TDZ). Explants produced the greatest number of axillary buds on media containing between 2.2 and 8.8 μM BA. The number of explants that produced axillary buds increased with increasing BA concentration. TDZ at concentrations between 2.3 and 23.0 μM caused hyperhydricity of shoots and were not effective in promoting shoot proliferation. The most calluses and shoots were produced from leaf midvein sections from in vitro grown plants placed on the medium containing 8.8–13.3 μM BA and 17.1 μM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) for 1 mo. before transferring to the medium containing only BA. Adventitious buds were produced only from red-pigmented callus, and explants that produced callus continued to produce adventitious shoots in the presence of IAA. Five-mo.-old shoots derived from shoot culture or organogenesis rooted readily in artificial soil with or without treatment with indolebutyric acid, and were acclimatized in the greenhouse.  相似文献

High frequency bud break and multiple shoots were induced in nodal explants collected between November to February from a 5 year old tree of Morus australis Poir syn. M. acidosa Griff. on Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine (1.0 mg/1). Incorporation of gibberellic acid (0.3 mg/l) along with BAP (1.0 mg/l) not only induced faster bud break from nodal explants as well as from apical shoot buds, but it also enhanced the frequency of bud break. Nodal explants were more responsive than apical shoot buds. The shoots formed in vitro were multiplied further as nodal segments, and an average multiplication rate of 6-fold per subculture was established within 4–5 months. The shoots were successfully rooted on half-strength MS containing a combination of indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid and indole-3-propionic acid, each at 1.0 mg/1. Axillary buds from the second primary scale excised from 21-day-old pea(Pisum sativum L. cv. Vladan) plants were used as a modelsystem for studying the release of buds from apical dominance. The isolatedbudswere transferred onto basal medium with or without a supplement of growthregulators and cultivated up to 24 h in short-term and up to 4weeks in long-term experiments. In both sets of experiments endogenous IAA,cytokinins and the uptake of labelled zeatin were analysed. The development ofbuds was monitored by image analysis, estimation of their weight, and byanatomical studies. Generative meristems were found in isolated axillary budsalready in 21-day-old plants at the beginning of the experimental period. Theonset of bud growth was recorded as soon as 2 h after the budexcision by image analysis. The bud growth was accompanied by a rapid transientincrease of the endogenous IAA level within the first 2 h,followedby an increase of iPA within 24 h. The uptake of the exogenouscytokinin ([3H]Z) reached its peak between the 6 and 8hafter the release from apical dominance. The cytokinin analyses of bothshort-term and long-term bud cultures revealed the increase of free cytokininsand their glucosides, indicating de novo synthesis ofcytokinins in the buds themselves.  相似文献
