Fruit–frugivore interactions are crucial for the dynamics and regeneration of most forested ecosystems. Still, we lack an understanding of the potential variation in the sign and strength of such interactions in relation to variations in the spatial and temporal ecological context. Here, we evaluated spatial (three sites) and temporal (two fruiting seasons) local variation in the sign (seed predation versus dispersal) and strength (frequency and quantity) of the interactions among six frugivorous mammals and a community of Mediterranean fleshy‐fruited shrubs. We examined mammal faecal samples and quantified frequency of seed occurrence, number of seeds per faecal sample, seed species diversity and quality of seed treatment (i.e. percentage of undamaged seeds). The frequency of seed occurrence and number of seeds per faecal sample strongly varied among dispersers, sites, seasons and fruit species. For instance, fox Vulpes vulpes faeces showed between 6 and 40 times more seeds than wild boar Sus scrofa faeces in seasons or sites in which Rubus and Juniperus seeds were dominant. However, in seasons or sites dominated by Corema seeds, wild boar faeces contained up to seven times more seeds than fox faeces. Mammalian carnivores (fox and badger, Meles meles) treated seeds gently, acting mostly as dispersers, whereas deer (Cervus elaphus and Dama dama) acted mainly as seed predators. Interestingly, rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus acted as either mostly seed disperser or seed predator depending on the plant species. Our results indicated that the sign of fruit–frugivore interactions depended mainly on the identity of the partners. For a particular fruit–frugivore pair, however, our surrogate of interaction strength largely varied with the spatio‐temporal context (year and habitat), leading to a low specificity across the seed–frugivore network. The high spatio‐temporal variability of seed dispersal (in quantity, quality and seed diversity) by different frugivores would confer resilience against unpredictable environmental conditions, such as those typical of Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

Cactus seeds have developed adaptations to survive with high temperatures and low soil moisture in their habitats. We studied the effect of the combination of four water potentials (0, −0.2, −0.4 and −0.6 MPa) and two temperatures (25°C and 35°C) on germination and seedling mass of four endemic Leptocereus species from Cuba. There were two semi-arid coast species (L. arboreus and L. santamarinae) and two species inhabiting dry inland karstic hills (L. ekmanii and L. scopulophilus). We hypothesized that: (a) a decrease in water potential and an increase in temperature would result in low and slow germination, as well as in low seedling mass, and (b) ungerminated cactus seeds after exposure to combined water and temperature stress would have a high recovery capacity. The minimum time required for the seeds to start germination (Tmin), mean germination time (MGT) and germinability were evaluated. In addition, seed mass, the recovery after treatments of non-germinated seeds, and the seedling fresh mass obtained under different treatments were compared between species. In general, germination was only obtained at 25°C and germinability and seedling mass were drastically affected by the reduction from 0 MPa to −0.2 MPa. Seeds showed thermoinhibition at 35°C at all water potentials. There was a tendency to increase the MGT with decreasing water potential in three species. Low seed recovery occurred at all combined treatments for three species. If the predictions of increased temperature and decreased rainfall for the Caribbean region occur, a reduction in the germination of the Leptocereus species studied is expected.  相似文献

Hybridization has been postulated as a main speciation mechanism in Cistus, a hard-seeded group of plants widely distributed in fire-prone Mediterranean shrublands. However, ecological evidence about how the segregation of hybrids from parents might occur is nonexistent. The presence of two hybrid populations in Morocco and Spain from Cistus albidus and Cistus heterophyllus led us to investigate their seed trait differences (seed size, mass and coat thickness) with the parentals and their seed germinability. A sowing experiment to compare the seedling emergence ability and seedling fitness of hybrids and their parentals was also carried out. Hybrid seeds germinated in a similar proportion to those of the parents. The hybrid seeds were significantly lighter, smaller and had thinner seed coats in both populations. However, these seed trait differences did not affect the seedling fitness of hybrids. These results were interpreted as a successful shift in the regeneration niche of the hybrids due to a greater proportion of soft-coated seeds, able to emerge from the soil seed bank in absence of fire. Smaller seeds also would favour further and deeper seed dispersal to escape from a fire. Monitoring of the seed yield of the Spanish population showed a competitive ability of hybrids.  相似文献

The functions of carnivorous mammals as seed dispersers were studied during a snow-free period of 2 years in the subalpine shrubland of northern Japan. Mammal appearances, which were recorded using three automatic cameras, were dominated by Japanese marten, Martes melampus (Wagner), followed by three carnivores (ermine, red fox, and raccoon dog) and two other mammals (field mouse and Japanese hare). Fecal analysis revealed that the martens dispersed seeds of 11 species (eight woody and three herbaceous plants), which included a vine species that is an inhabitant of lower elevation sites. Fruit weight and size, and flesh weight and volume of the fleshy-fruited species foraged by the martens were significantly greater than those that were not foraged. These facts indicate that the marten plays a key role as a relatively long-distance seed disperser for major component species with large and flesh-rich fruits in the subalpine shrubland.  相似文献

Abstract

Germination tests were carried out on seeds from three Italian populations of Abies alba. Seed germinability was up to 38%. HgCl2, NaClO and plant preservative mixture were used as seed‐sterilising agents. Despite chemical treatments, Papulaspora rubida and Chaetomium globosum were isolated. Effects of avian gut-passage on seed germination are important to assess the effectiveness of frugivores in woodland regeneration, particularly in biodiversity hotspots that have a high incidence of avian frugivory. We examined the effect of avian gut-passage on seed germination in contrast to seeds that remain uneaten in five shrub species in Mediterranean central Chile and sought to determine the physiological mechanism(s) by which seed germinability is modified. Germination assays were conducted in a glasshouse for five common shrub species of the sub-Andean matorral: Azara dentata (Flacourtiaceae), Schinus polygamus and Schinus molle (Anacardiaceae), Cestrum parqui (Solanaceae), and Maytenus boaria (Celastraceae). We estimated germinability (final percent germination), dormancy length (time from sowing to first germination), mean length of dormancy of all germinated seeds, and contrasted germination rates of defecated versus manually extracted and pulp-enclosed seeds. Avian gut-passage increased seed germinability in four of the five shrub species studied—primarily through deinhibition via pulp removal. Minimum dormancy length was not modified by avian gut-passage for A. dentata, but was significantly shorter for S. molle and C. parqui. Mean dormancy length was significantly shorter in gut-passed seeds of A. dentata, S. molle and M. boaria. Avian gut-passage greatly enhanced the seed germination rates of three species, A. dentata, S. molle and C. parqui. We conclude that the positive effects of birds on seed germination facilitate the regeneration of sub-Andean shrublands, and that bird declines due to landscape change may impair recovery rates of successional or restored areas due to dispersal limitation.  相似文献

The effects of summer and winter stress on the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents and photosystem 2 efficiency were examined in six Mediterranean scrub species. These six species belong to two different plant functional types: drought semi-deciduous (Halimium halimifolium L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Erica scoparia L.) and evergreen sclerophylls (Juniperus phoenicea L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Myrtus communis L.). Two sites with different water availability were chosen. In the xerophytic site, despite they belong to two different functional types, R. officinalis and J. phoenicea showed a similar response. These were the most affected species in summer. H. halimifolium showed optimal values of Fv/Fm and non-significant seasonal changes in xanthophyll content. In the mesic site, E. scoparia and M. communis were apparently the most affected species by winter climatic conditions. P. lentiscus presented a pattern similar to H. halimifolium, except for elevated F0 values. In all the studied species, lutein plus zeaxanthin content was negatively correlated with Fv/Fm in summer and with leaf water potential, thus indicating that the thermal dissipation of energy was a general pattern for all species. Under stress, plant response is more species-specific than dependent on its functional type.  相似文献

Questions: (i) How do large proportions of seeds pass through the guts of goats without damage? (ii) What is the temporal pattern of seed defecation? (iii) Does ingestion by goats enhance or depress seed germination? Location: Doñana Natural Park, SW Spain. Methods: Six female goats of similar size and age were fed with 1000 seeds of four common Mediterranean shrub species (Cistus salvifolius, Halimium halimifolium, Myrtus communis, Pistacia lentiscus), which were retrieved from the goat's dung 96 h after ingestion. The seeds retrieved were tested for germination and viability, along with seeds not eaten by the goats. Results: Less than 30% of the seeds eaten were retrieved from the dung, with significant differences between species. No seeds of P. lentiscus were retrieved. The major part of the seeds was retrieved between 48 and 72 h after ingestion in all other species. The passage through the goat gut significantly increased seed germination in C. salvifolius and H. halimifolium, and depressed it in M. communis. Viability was significantly lower in the eaten seeds of M. communis than in the uneaten ones, while there were no differences in C. salvifolius and H. halimifolium. Conclusions: Goats can potentially disperse seeds of the plants that they eat. This should be taken into account when designing management plans in order to prevent shrub invasion in undesired areas. It could also be used as a management tool for spreading populations of desireable shrub species.  相似文献

The distribution of plants is associated with their different patterns of response to their environment. Mediterranean plants have evolved a number of morphological and physiological adaptations that determine their ability to survive and grow, being an effective water uptake and use important factors for drought resistance. In this article, we evaluated interspecific differences in morphology, biomass allocation, and architectural traits and their relationship with water use strategies in seedlings of seven co-occurring Mediterranean species (Anthyllis cytisoides L., Genista scorpius L. DC., Myrtus communis L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Spartium junceum L. and Ulex parviflorus Pourr.). The results showed that morphological root features vary among species and they are significantly correlated with root hydraulic conductance and leaf gas exchange variables. Species with high specific root length (SRL) showed a low hydraulic conductance per root length (K RRL) but high specific hydraulic conductance (K As). M. communis and P. lentiscus showed the most contrasting water use patterns with respect to the other species studied. The results are not affected when considering phylogenetic relatedness. Thus, the variability observed in root hydraulic properties and leaf gas exchange suggests important mechanisms for understanding species coexistence in water-limited ecosystems.  相似文献

The genus Myrtus L. (Myrtaceae family) comprises two species, Myrtus communis L. (known as common myrtle) growing wild all around the Mediterranean basin and Myrtus nivellei Batt . and Trab . (known as Saharan myrtle), found in central Sahara. Only one country, Algeria, hosts both species, M. communis in the North and M. nivellei in the South. The aim of this review was to collect, summarize, and compare the main results reported relative to the essential oils isolated from aerial parts of both species: botanical aspects, habitat, traditional use, chemical composition, new compounds, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant activity, anti‐inflammatory effect, and insecticidal activity. With restricted populations and a small number of individuals, Discocactus bahiensis Britton & Rose (Cactaceae) is an endangered species in Brazil and its capacity for the formation of seed banks in the soil and the maintenance of seed viability remains unknown. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the most efficient way to maintain viability during storage of seeds of D. bahiensis . Seeds were stored in paper bags and either kept in a cold chamber (7 ± 2°C) in the dark (ex situ conservation) or buried in the soil to a depth of 5 cm in an area of natural occurrence of the species (in situ conservation). Germinability of the seed banks was evaluated monthly for 20 months. During the first 10 months of storage, germinability of the seeds conserved in situ and ex situ was similar to that of recently collected seeds. After this period, a 70% reduction in germinability was found for the seeds maintained in situ and there was nearly complete loss of viability after 12 months of storage in the field (germinability < 10% in the last 8 months of the experiment), indicating the ability to form persistent soil seed banks. In contrast, the seeds stored in the cold chamber maintained greater than 70% germinability throughout the entire analysis period, demonstrating that ex situ conservation is the most efficient way to maintain the viability of the seeds of this endangered species.  相似文献

Background: Population structure and dynamics in natural ecosystems can be affected by seed viability and dormancy. However, how the endogenous contents of phytohormones and vitamin E in seeds relative to the environment affect viability and dormancy is not yet fully understood.

Aims: We studied seed viability and germination capacity in two populations of the Mediterranean shrub, Cistus albidus, exposed to contrasting environmental conditions.

Methods: We measured seed viability and germination capacity and endogenous contents of abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellins and vitamin E in seeds collected from two populations, in two environmentally contrasting environments in north-eastern Spain.

Results: Plants growing in the natural site produced seeds with lower germination percentage but similar viability, indicating higher seed dormancy. Enhanced seed dormancy was paralleled with higher contents of ABA and lower contents of gibberellins (GAs). Contents of tocopherols and tocotrienols were higher in seeds of the natural population. Tocopherol contents in seeds correlated positively with the ratio living:total aerial biomass.

Conclusions: Two Mediterranean populations of C. albidus growing in two sites with contrasting environmental conditions showed marked differences in seed dormancy and germination, which may be explained, at least in part, by differences in seed hormonal contents.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the essential oils isolated by hydrodistillation from the fruits of four selected Myrtus communis L. genotypes from Turkey was characterized by GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses. 1,8‐Cineole (29.20–31.40%), linalool (15.67–19.13%), α‐terpineol (8.40–18.43%), α‐pinene (6.04–20.71%), and geranyl acetate (3.98–7.54%) were found to be the major constituents of the fruit essential oils of all M. communis genotypes investigated. The oils were characterized by high amounts of oxygenated monoterpenes, representing 73.02–83.83% of the total oil compositions. The results of the fungal growth inhibition assays showed that the oils inhibited the growth of 19 phytopathogenic fungi. However, their antifungal activity was generally lower than that of the commercial pesticide benomyl. The herbicidal effects of the oils on the seed germination and seedling growth of Amaranthus retroflexus L., Chenopodium album L., Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop ., Lactuca serriola L., and Rumex crispus L. were also determined. The oils completely or partly inhibited the seed germinations and seedling growths of the plants. The findings of the present study suggest that the M. communis essential oils might have potential to be used as natural herbicides as well as fungicides.  相似文献

Summary

We analyse the fruiting phase of the life cycleof Digitalis thapsi L. We studied the production and size of seeds and capsules, and the interpopulational variability and inter-relationships of these parameters. The capsule volume, number of seeds per capsule, of seeds per individual, and of capsules per individual were inter-related and fairly affected by the medium, whereas seed weight was found to bea more independent character. A germination study showed that the species has agreat germinative capacity and has positive photoblasty. It is non-dormant especially if incubated under experimental conditions close to the climatic conditions of the site of provenance of the samples. An increase in temperature speeds up the process without increasing germinability. The morphological and biometric characteristics of the first stages of development of the species following germination were analysed. It was found that seed weight is not positively correlated with cotyledon length nor with any of the other parameters con-sidered, and that the length of the fifth leaf is a useful parameter to express inter-populational genetic variability. Seedling production in spring seems to be influenced more by physical than by chemical factors.  相似文献

Some carnivorous mammals ingest fruit and disperse seeds of forest plant species capable of colonizing disturbed areas in ecosystems. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the dissemination of Arctostaphylos pungens and Juniperus deppeana seeds by the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), coyote (Canis latrans), and other carnivores in the Protected Natural Area Sierra Fría, in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Scat collection was undertaken via transects using the direct search method, while the seasonal phenology of A. pungens and J. deppeana was evaluated by recording flower and fruit abundance on both the plant and the surrounding forest floor ground. Seed viability was assessed by optical densitometry via X‐ray and a germination test. It was found that the gray fox, coyote, ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), and bobcat (Lynx rufus) disseminated seeds of A. pungens (212 ± 48.9 seeds/scat) and J. deppeana (23.6 ± 4.9 seeds/scat), since a large proportion of the collected scat of these species contained seeds (28/30 = 93.33%, 12/43 = 27.9%, 6/12 = 50% and 7/25 = 28% respectively). The gray fox, coyote, ringtail, and bobcat presented an average of seed dispersion of both plant species of 185.4 ± 228.7, 4.0 ± 20.0, 12.1 ± 30.4, and 0.8 ± 1.5 per scat; the seed proportions in the gray fox, coyote, ringtail, and bobcat were 89.6/10.4%, 82.3/17.7%, 90.4/9.6%, and 38.1/61.9% for A. pungens and J. deppeana, respectively. The phenology indicated a finding related to the greater abundance of ripe fruit in autumn and winter (p < .01). This coincided with the greater abundance of seeds found in scats during these seasons. Endozoochory and diploendozoochory enhanced the viability and germination of the seeds (p > .05), except in those of A. pungens dispersed by coyote. These results suggest that carnivores, particularly the gray fox, the coyote, and the bobcat, play an important role in forest seed dissemination, and thus forest regeneration, by making both a quantitative and qualitative contribution to the dispersal of the two pioneer species under study.  相似文献

Arisaema dracontium (green dragon) is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in eastern North America. However, in Canada, at the northern edge of its distribution, the species is designated as “vulnerable” with respect to conservation status. In natural populations, seedlings are uncommon; the present study was undertaken in order to characterize seed and seedling properties in green dragon. Seeds were sampled from five sites, ranging from Ontario at the northern limit of the distribution range, to Louisiana in the south. Seed germinability ranged from 25 to 55%, depending upon source. Experiments indicated that neither the hard seed coat nor a water-soluble exudate from the seed was responsible for inducing or maintaining dormancy. Patterns of seed germination appear to reflect general climatic conditions at the sites where seeds had originated. Cold stratification at 3°C produced significantly greater relative germinability in all seed collections except the most southerly one, from Baton Rouge. These seeds also had a slower overall speed of germination. In contrast, germination of seeds from the most northerly site was promoted by cold stratification and occurred over a relatively brief period. Germination in alternating light and dark conditions decreased the speed of germination compared to germination in the dark, however exposure to light changed the phenology of germination by promoting development of adventitious roots and primary leaves in these seedlings.  相似文献

In the present paper we studied the life history traits related to seed germination of Stipa tenacissima, a key species in semiarid environments of western Mediterranean areas. S. tenacissima is a perennial tussock grass, which has traditionally been considered to expand mainly by vegetative propagation with little or no sexual reproduction. We analysed seed longevity as well as the type of seed dormancy and the role of the seed covers from seeds collected from different populations in SE Spain. We also studied the variation in seed germinability among populations, individuals, and years and the ability of seeds of S. tenacissima to form soil seed banks. There was significant variation in seed germination among individuals, populations and years. Lemma and palea were the main factor controlling these differences since their removal promoted higher and faster germination and eliminated the differences in germination parameters among populations. However, the control of dormancy by lemma and palea was independent of their weight, suggesting that their chemical nature plays a more important role than does size in controlling seed germination. Mechanical scarification treatments (via abrasion with sand) did not affect seed germination. The decay in seed germinability two years after seed collection and the low density of viable seeds in soils one year after seed dispersal indicated that S. tenacissima forms transient soil seed banks.  相似文献

Aim The Mediterranean region is often regarded as a crossroads where species of various origins meet. However, the biogeographical relationships between this region and contiguous Saharan, Macaronesian and Irano‐Turanian regions have not been investigated in detail. The aim of this study was to characterize the phylogeography of the circum‐Mediterranean species Myrtus communis and to investigate the origin of isolated central Saharan populations of Myrtus nivellei. Location The distribution ranges of M. communis from Macaronesia to the Irano‐Turanian region (173 sampled populations) and of M. nivellei in the mountains (Hoggar, Tassili n’Ajjer, Immidir, Tibesti) of the central Sahara (23 populations). Methods Nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) sequences of Myrtaceae were used to root the phylogeny of Myrtus, and to date its crown node, according to a detailed review of the palaeobotanical records used for multiple fossil calibration. Chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequences were analysed through the determination of genetic diversity indices and by statistical phylogeography. Results Both cpDNA and nrDNA markers indicated east–west genetic differentiation within M. communis. During the late Miocene, a key vicariance event affected the previous circum‐Mediterranean distribution of Myrtus, leading to the isolation of eastern populations. During the late Miocene or early Pliocene, two clades diverged: one is now scattered in the Mediterranean Basin and adjacent regions, whereas the other evolved in the western Mediterranean region. The differentiation of lineages during the Plio‐Pleistocene occurred mainly in the western part of the Mediterranean Basin, which has been at the origin of migrations towards Macaronesian islands and Saharan mountains. This is one of the first plant phylogeographical studies to report migrations from the Mediterranean to the Sahara. Main conclusions The genus Myrtus has persisted in the Mediterranean region since at least the Neogene and its biogeography reflects the cumulation of the species’ responses to successive palaeoenvironmental changes. The current distribution of the genus Myrtus in the Mediterranean Basin and in isolated areas, such as the Macaronesian islands and Saharan mountains, can be explained by the striking ability of this plant not only to persist locally in various refugia, but also to migrate.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We analyzed relative sensitivities of small- and medium-sized carnivores to livestock husbandry (stocking rates and predator control) in Kalahari, South Africa, rangelands at a regional scale. We monitored small carnivores using track counts on 22 Kalahari farms across a land-use gradient ranging from low to high stocking rates and also interviewed each farm manager to identify farmers' perception of small carnivores as potential predators for livestock. We recorded 12 species of small- and medium-sized carnivores across 22 Kalahari farms. Stocking rate was the most important driving variable for local carnivore abundance. Abundance of all species was lowest on farms where stocking rate was high. Most farm managers perceived medium-sized carnivores, in particular, African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica), black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas), and caracal (Caracal caracal), as potential predators of livestock. Multiple regression analysis shows that black-backed jackal, African wildcat, and caracal were negatively affected by predator control measures, whereas bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis), cape fox (Vulpes chama), and small-spotted genet (Genetta genetta) were positively affected. Our results show a need for expanding research and conservation activities toward small- and medium-sized carnivores in southern African savannah rangelands. We, therefore, suggest developing a monitoring program combining passive tracking with indigenous knowledge of local Khoisan Bushmen to monitor carnivore populations, and we recommend additional predator removal experiments that manipulate predator densities.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore the effect of temperature, light, and post-harvest period, and their interactions, on seed germination ecology of four common pasture species in the Mediterranean environment. Mature seeds of Diplotaxis erucoides, Hirschfeldia incana, Hyoseris scabra (Mediterranean distribution) and Sonchus oleraceus (cosmopolitan distribution) were subjected to seven constant temperatures (10–40°C, at intervals of 5°C) under continuous darkness, or a 12 h/12 h light/dark photoperiod at 30, 150 and 270 days after harvest (DAH). Cumulative germination and germination speed were determined. In all the tested species, except S. oleraceus, light significantly enhanced germination. S. oleraceus seeds maintained germination values over 90%, in a wide range of temperatures (10–35°C), in the dark as well as in light. Seeds of H. incana germinated well soon after seed dispersal. In D. erucoides and H. scabra, germination increased with storage period, while in S. oleraceus there was no effect of seed age. In all the species, moreover, no germination was recorded at 40°C. Temperature, light, and post- harvest requirement may be regarded as an adaptation strategy to ensure optimal conditions for seedling development and survival in Mediterranean species, while the species with a cosmopolitan distribution germinates under almost all tested conditions.  相似文献
