Benthic microbial mat communities were sampled from 20 lakes, ponds and streams of the McMurdo Sound region, Antarctica. At least five distinct assemblages could be differentiated by their cyanobacterial species composition, pigment content and vertical structure. The most widely occurring freshwater communities were dominated by thin-trichome (0·5–3 µm) oscillatoriacean species that formed benthic films up to several millimetres thick. ‘Lift-off mats’ produced mucilaginous mats 1–5 cm thick at the surface and edge of certain ponds. Another group of oscillatoriacean communities was characteristic of hypersaline pond environments; these communities were dominated by species with thicker trichomes such as Oscillatoria priestleyi. Black mucilaginous layers of Nostoc commune were widely distributed in aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats. Dark brown sheath pigmentation was also characteristic of less cohesive mats and crusts dominated by Pleurocapsa, Gloeocapsa and Calothrix. High performance liquid chromatography analysis of the lipophilic pigments showed that the upper region of most of the Antarctic mats was enriched in sheath pigments (scytonemin) and/or certain carotenoids such as myxoxanthophyll and canthaxanthin. Most of the chlorophyll a (Chla), as well as phycocyanin, β-carotene and echinenone, was located in the lower strata of the mat profiles. In many of these communities most of the photosynthetic biomass occurred in a ‘deep Chla maximum’ that was well protected from short-wavelength radiation by the surface layer of light-screening pigments.  相似文献

The only feeding habitats available to African lily trotters, Actophilornis africanus (Gmelin), at Lake Naivasha are mats of the alien water fern, Salvinia molesta Mitch. This has replaced the native floating leaved water lily beds. Lily trotters were able to use these mats, taking invertebrate food items from the surface or turning plants over and pecking at the rootlets. Pecking rates and turning rates responded to the nature of the available food, with pecking rates high and turning rates low when terrestrial arthropods were found on the mat surface. Both pecking rates and turning rates were low when large aquatic food items, such as the swamp worm (Alma emeni Michaelsen), were available. Pecking rates and turning rates were both high when the predominant food items were aquatic insect larvae. The largest of these (hydrophilid larvae) were taken in preference to the smaller but commoner chironomid larvae. Colonization of the mats of S. molesta by invertebrates was low if the mats were affected by wind action but higher if they were constrained by enclosure or stranding; mats with higher invertebrate densities supported more feeding lily trotters.  相似文献

Concurrent with the spread of green algal mats on tidal flats, reports of macrofauna dieoffs under dense algal mats have increased in numbers. Bivalves seem to be particularly affected by persistent dense algal mats. Bivalve species with a long extendible siphon seem to be less affected underneath algal mats, but no distinction has been made in the past between species with short and those with long siphons,Mya arenaria andMacoma balthica, on an intertidal mudflat in New England. Abundances ofM. arenaria declined substantially during the study period when a thick green algal mat covered the mudflat for several months. Numbers of the small bivalveGemma gemma also decreased substantially, whereas abundances ofM. balthica showed minimal variation during the time of algal coverage. In algae removal/addition experiments numbers ofM. arenaria decreased, but effects were only significant in an algal addition to previously algal-free mudflat areas. Abundance ofM. balthica did not change significantly in the algal removal/additition experiments. Over the time period of the experiment (9 weeks),M. arenaria showed measurable size increase in uncovered mudflat areas, but not underneath algal mats. Similarly,M. balthica only increased in size in the uncovered mudflat area. From these results it is concluded thatM. balthica can survive time periods of dense algal coverage because it is able to penetrate through the algal mat with its long extendible siphon, and thus can reach well-oxygenated water layers above the mat.M. arenaria with its thick, less extendible, siphon cannot push through dense algal mats and therefore is more likely to die underneath persistent algal mats.  相似文献

Annual and perennial cyanobacterial mats from streams on Signy Island, Antarctica, show similar areal concentrations of chlorophyll-a and areal rates of photosynthesis. Maximum rates of photosynthesis were temperature dependant over the range 0–14 C, with a Q10 of approximately 2.5. Rates of photosynthesis per unit chlorophyll-a were comparable to other Antarctic mat communities but low compared to phytoplankton from upstream lakes. Areal rates of photosynthesis were however much higher than for phytoplankton. Low chlorophyll-specific rates of photosynthesis are interpreted as the effect of self shading within the mats. It is hypothesised that these mats rapidly attenuate incoming radiation and that photosynthesis in most of the mat is effectively light-limited. This situation is likely to occur in all thick periphyton films.  相似文献

Epiphyton associated with thick, floating mats of the common duckweed (Lemna minor L.) was studied at four sites in western Canada between 1985 and 1988. Maximum epiphyton abundance generally occurred in spring as biomass of the duckweed mat was increasing. Epiphytic biomass was low during summer and increased at some sites in autumn with mat decomposition. The community was composed mostly of diatoms and, during summer, photosynthetic bacteria. Species richness of the diatom flora was low, suggesting that duckweed mats are environments to which few species are adapted. Photosynthesis - irradiance curves indicated that duckweed epiphyton was not adapted to low light levels that occurred in the mat (< 1 % of ambient), suggesting they may survive via other means of nutrition. The mat phyllosphere was also characterized by wide spatial and temporal variation in temperature, and sharp vertical profiles of dissolved oxygen and nutrients.  相似文献

Jelly-like microbial mat samples were collected from benthic surfaces at the St. Petersburg methane seep located in Central Baikal. The concentrations of certain ions, specifically chloride, bromide, sulphate, acetate, iron, calcium, and magnesium, were 2–40 times higher in the microbial mats than those in the pore and bottom water. A large number of diatom valves, cyanobacteria, and filamentous, rod-shaped and coccal microorganisms were found in the samples of bacterial mats using light, epifluorescence and scanning microscopy.Comparative analysis of a 16S rRNA gene fragment demonstrated the presence of bacteria and archaea belonging to the following classes and phyla: Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Cytophaga-Flavobacteria-Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Euryarchaeota. The chemical composition and phylogenetic structure of the microbial community showed that the life activity of the mat occurs due to methane and its derivatives involved. Values of δ13C for the microbial mats varied from ?73.6‰ to ?65.8‰ and for animals from ?68.9‰ to ?36.6‰. Functional genes of the sequential methane oxidation (pmoA and mxaF) and different species of methanotrophic bacteria inhabiting cold ecosystems were recorded in the total DNA. Like in other psychroactive communities, the destruction of organic substances forming formed as a result of methanotrophy, terminates at the stage of acetate formation in the microbial mats of Lake Baikal (1,400 m depth). Its further transformation is limited by hydrogen content and carried out in the subsurface layers of sediments.  相似文献

1. Metaphyton mats typically originate as benthic algal biofilms that experience higher solar radiation and temperatures, and reduced access to nutrients, once they reach the water surface, but the impacts of these physicochemical changes on metaphyton condition and community composition have received little attention. 2. Using microprobes positioned at 0, 2, 4 and 6 cm depth, we recorded small‐scale differences in water chemistry within metaphyton mats constrained in floating nets during an 8‐week period. Concurrent weekly samples of filamentous algae and their diatom epiphytes were collected from the top, middle and bottom of the mats and were analysed for changes in ash‐free dry mass (AFDM) and chlorophyll‐a, nutrient (N, P, C, Si) content and taxonomic composition. 3. Light intensity, temperature and dissolved oxygen declined both with increasing depth in the mat and over the study period. The autotrophic index (=AFDM/chlorophyll‐a) was greatest at the top of the mats and increased over time; samples also had higher C/P and C/N ratios than samples deeper within the mat. 4. Pithophora was consistently the dominant algal filament throughout the study (representing 85% of all filaments averaged over time and depth); epiphytic diatom cover on Pithophora (calculated as epiphyte area index) declined over time, particularly at the top of the mat. 5. Densities of the diatom epiphytes Gomphonema, Cocconeis and Fragilaria increased with increasing depth within the mat, whereas Cymbella/Encyonema was more common in surface samples. 6. Our results indicate that metaphyton mats are highly dynamic communities, spatially organised in part by small‐scale environmental variation and subject to changes in taxonomic composition following their arrival at the water surface.  相似文献

Bedrock erosional features in a small stream (Little Schultz Creek, Bibb County, Alabama) created a variety of habitats for epilithic growth. One suck habitat was illustrated by the occurrence of small falls (<0.3 m) in the main channel of the stream and blue-green algal mats associated with them. The cohesive, laminar algal mats were found at 15 such sites along a 250-m reach of the stream. The primary mat matrix consisted of the blue-green alga Oscillatoria submembranacea Ardissone and Strafforella. The uppermost portion of each mat consisted of a thin (<1 mm thick) green layer of biologically active filaments. The lower layers were thicker (up to 2 cm thick) and consisted of brown laminae of Oscillatoria filaments, and associated sediments. In addition, numerous diatoms mere associated with the mat surface. Some were loosely attached (e.g. Achnanthes); others (Cymbella tumida (Bréb.) V. H.) were stalked. These mats were present throughout the year and showed a bimodal annual distribution with maxima hi February and July. In February, total mat coverage was higher than in July. This winter maximum may have been related to a mode of growth dependent upon sedimentation from storm events and subsequent upward growth of the alga. Mat primary productivity on an areal basis (432 mg C · m?2· d?1 in March and 907 mg C · M?2· d?1 in April) was 2–12 times the maxima measured on epizoic and cobbles surfaces and other bedrock surfaces in the same stream. The limited areal coverage of the mats, when compared to other surfaces available for algal colonization, made them less important than other epilithic and epizoic surfaces in terms of total primary production in this stream reach. However, we propose that the combination of their unique structure and high primary productivity may make these algal mats sites of high algal and bacterial metabolic activity, which may include anaerobic processes in midchannel, where such activity would not be expected to occur.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, the growth characteristics of the submerged species Elodea nuttallii (Planch.) St. John and Potamogeton crispus L. were assessed in the presence and absence of floating mats of Azolla filiculoides Lam. and Lemna minuta Kunth. Light penetration and the development of pH and dissolved oxygen differences were monitored. The growth of P. crispus was suppressed much more than that of E. nuttallii and the effects of A. filiculoides were more severe than those of L. minuta. Findings are related to possible field responses of submerged plants under floating mats, especially their abilities to compensate for the potential suppressive effects of floating mats under natural conditions.  相似文献

On 15 November 2017 the mouth of the West Kleinemonde Estuary breached following heavy catchment rains and increased river flow. The water level in the estuary following mouth opening decreased by 1.65 m within 24 h, resulting in an almost complete draining of the littoral zone where large beds of the aquatic macrophyte Ruppia cirrhosa and mats of the associated filamentous algae were present. As the water depth within the plant beds decreased, the macrophytes, together with the algal filaments, created an increasingly dense mat, trapping fish that were resident, foraging or passing through the littoral zone. By 16 November 2017 large numbers of fishes belonging to at least 20 species were trapped in pools and depressions within the littoral, as well as within the R. cirrhosa beds and filamentous algal mats in the lower reaches of this system. Other affected taxa included crustaceans, especially isopods, and large numbers of small bivalves attached to macrophyte vegetation. Beneficiaries of the fish kill, in terms of unexpected food availability, included a variety of piscivorous bird species and the Cape clawless otter Aonyx capensis. This is the first documented account of a diverse species fish kill associated with estuary mouth breaching.  相似文献

A better understanding of system-specific viral ecology in diverse environments is needed to predict patterns of virus–host trophic structure in the Anthropocene. This study characterised viral-host trophic structure within coral reef benthic cyanobacterial mats—a globally proliferating cause and consequence of coral reef degradation. We employed deep longitudinal multi-omic sequencing to characterise the viral assemblage (ssDNA, dsDNA, and dsRNA viruses) and profile lineage-specific host–virus interactions within benthic cyanobacterial mats sampled from Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands. We recovered 11,012 unique viral populations spanning at least 10 viral families across the orders Caudovirales, Petitvirales, and Mindivirales. Gene-sharing network analyses provided evidence for extensive genomic novelty of mat viruses from reference and environmental viral sequences. Analysis of coverage ratios of viral sequences and computationally predicted hosts spanning 15 phyla and 21 classes revealed virus–host abundance (from DNA) and activity (from RNA) ratios consistently exceeding 1:1, suggesting a top-heavy intra-mat trophic structure with respect to virus–host interactions. Overall, our article contributes a curated database of viral sequences found in Caribbean coral reef benthic cyanobacterial mats (vMAT database) and provides multiple lines of field-based evidence demonstrating that viruses are active members of mat communities, with broader implications for mat functional ecology and demography.  相似文献

Microcystins (MCN), β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and anatoxin-a were investigated in Antarctic cyanobacterial mats collected from Ross Island and the McMurdo Ice Shelf, East Antarctica during Captain Scott’s ‘Discovery’ National Antarctic Expedition (1901–1904). Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (UPLC-PDA) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) analysis were used to quantify the cyanotoxins in seven cyanobacterial mat samples. MCNs were identified in six of the mat samples at concentrations from 0.5 to 16.1 µg?g–1 dry weight. BMAA was found in one sample (528 ng?g–1 dry weight, total BMAA), as well as two BMAA isomers, 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) and N-(2-aminoethyl) glycine (AEG) in six samples up to 6.56 and 6.79 μg?g–1 dry weight, respectively. No anatoxin-a was detected. The findings confirm that MCNs, BMAA and BMAA isomers are preserved under dry herbarium conditions. The ‘Discovery’ cyanobacterial mat samples represent the oldest polar cyanobacterial samples found to contain cyanotoxins to date and provide new baseline data for cyanotoxins in Antarctic freshwater cyanobacterial mats from prior to human activity in Antarctica, the development of the ozone hole and current levels of climatic change.  相似文献

Planting multiple species in wetland restoration sites could potentially accelerate ecological succession while enhancing ecological services. Our study of thick‐mat floating marsh demonstrated that two species performed better than monocultures for developing a more structurally sound root mat. Although Panicum hemitomon is the typical dominant and focal species of all restoration efforts of this habitat type, we evaluated the effects of additional species, including Sagittaria lancifolia, a ubiquitous floating marsh constituent, and three laterally growing specialists (Alternanthera philoxeroides, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, and Ludwigia peploides). In a mesocosm experiment, we found greater P. hemitomon biomass in monocultures but greater vegetative cover and total mat biomass with P. hemitomon plus L. peploides, but not greater biomass in the most species‐rich treatment or treatment with the greatest initial planting density. We conclude that L. peploides aids restoration of thick‐mat floating marsh by increasing mat buoyancy, enhancing lateral growth, and providing greater root mat structural integrity. This type of laterally growing specialist should accelerate coalescence of neighboring constructed and naturally formed mats. Planting species that occupy complementary niches should also minimize competition for key resources.  相似文献

The socio-economic impacts of the free-floating aquatic plant water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Pontederiaceae), on aquatic systems are well documented, yet the impacts on aquatic biodiversity, particularly invertebrate biodiversity, are less well understood. This study aimed to determine whether the presence of water hyacinth altered the diversity and assemblage structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in a conservation area. The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage was sampled over 1 year at five sites under water hyacinth mats and at five sites without water hyacinth at Lake Nsezi—Nseleni River in the vicinity of Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Artificial substrates were placed beneath water hyacinth mats or in the open water to allow for colonization by freshwater macroinvertebrates, and left for a period of 6 weeks, repeated on seven occasions. Twenty nine families comprising 18,797 individuals were collected, 817 (13 families) individuals were from under water hyacinth mat sites compared to 17,980 (27 families) individuals from open water sites. Ninety-eight percent of individuals collected were, however, the invasive snail, Tarebia granifera. Open water samples were separated from samples beneath the water hyacinth mat by non-metric Multidimensional Scaling, indicating reduced biodiversity associated with the presence of water hyacinth. Exclusion of the dominant Thiaridae from the analysis did not alter the groupings. Family richness(s) and abundance (N) were significantly higher in open water communities(S: H3 = 21.09; P = 0.0001; N: H3 = 22.58; P = 0.00001), while evenness (J’) was higher under water hyacinth mats (H3 = 20.13; P = 0.0002). The presence of water hyacinth had a significantly negative impact on aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity in a conservation area, and therefore the control of this invasive aquatic plant must play a major role in catchment management.  相似文献

The microenvironmental and photosynthetic characteristics of Antarctic microbial mats were measured in a series of ponds near McMurdo Sound. As elsewhere in Antarctica, these cold-water benthic communities were dominated by oscillatoriacean cyanobacteria. Despite large variations in mat thickness, surface morphology, and color, all of the communities had a similar pigment organization, with a surface carotenoid-rich layer that overlaid a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) enriched in phycocyanin as well as chlorophyll a. Spectroradiometric analyses showed that the DCM population inhabited an orange-red shade environment. In several of the mats, the deep-living trichomes migrated up to the surface of the mat within 2 h in response to a 10-fold decrease in surface irradiance. The euphotic layer of the mats was supersaturated in oxygen and contained ammonium and dissolved reactive phosphorus concentrations in excess of 100 mg N·m?3 or P·m?3. Integral photosynthesis by core samples was saturated at low irradiances and varied two- to threefold throughout the continuous 24-h radiation cycle. Oxygen microelectrode analyses showed that the photosynthetic rates were slow to negligible near the surface and maximal in the DCM. These compressed, nutrient-rich euphotic zones have some properties analogous to planktonic systems, but the integrated photosynthetic responses of the community reflect the strong self-shading within the mat and physiological dominance by the motile, DCM populations.  相似文献

Floating marshes occur over 70% of the western Terrebonne Basin, Louisiana, USA, freshwater coastal wetlands. They are of several types: A free-floating thick-mat (45–60 cm) marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia; a thick mat marsh dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Sagittaria lancifolia that floats part of the year, but whose vertical floating range is damped compared to adjacent water; and an irregularly-floating thin mat (< 30 cm) dominated by Eleocharis spp. in the spring and Ludwigia leptocarpa and Bidens laevis in the summer and fall. Floating mats must be almost entirely organic in order to be buoyant enough to float. The western Terrebonne wetlands receive large winter/spring supplies of suspended sediments from the Atchafalaya River. Even though sediment concentrations in the adjacent bayou are as high as 100 mg l–1, the Panicum hemitomon/Sagittaria lancifolia free-floating marsh probably receives no over-surface sediments since it floats continuously. The bulk density data of the damped-floating marsh, however, suggest some mineral sediment input, probably during winter when this marsh is submerged. These two types of floating marsh could not have developed in the present sediment regime of the Atchafalaya River, but as long as they remain floating can continue to exist. Thin floating mats are found in areas receiving the least sediment (<20 mg 1–1 suspended sediment concentration in adjacent bayous). This low sediment environment probably made possible their formation within the past 20 years. They may represent a transitional stage in mat succession from (1) existing thick-mat floating marsh to a degrading floating marsh, or (2) a floating marsh developing in shallow open water.Corresponding editor: D. This study examined the impacts of the alien waterweed, water hyacinth, on the abundance and diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates in the littoral areas of northern Lake Victoria in Uganda. The weed had undergone explosive growth on the lake causing serious disruption to people, the economy and the ecosystem. This study was confined to impact of the weed in the littoral zone, not to the large floating mats of vegetation which float across the lake and clog large areas of shoreline. The littoral area studied comprised of fringing mats of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) Solms (water hyacinth) to the lakeward of Cyperus papyrus; water hyacinth mats undergoing colonisation by Vossia cuspidata (Roxb.) Griff.; and a typical Cyperus papyrus L shore with no outer floating mat of water hyacinth. Numerical abundance (Nos. m–2) and diversity (No. of taxa) of macroinvertebrates recovered from pure Eichhornia crassipes and the Eichhornia-Vossia succession increased from the fringe of the Cyperus papyrus towards the open water. In the typical Cyperus papyrus fringe, in the absence of water hyacinth, abundance was highest at the papyrus/open water interface and dropped off sharply towards open water. The Shannon–Weaver diversity index (H) of macroinvertebrates decreased progressively from pure Eichhornia crassipes stands, to Vossia/Eichhornia beds and Cyperus papyrus stands (H=0.56, 0.54 and 0.34, respectively) but were not significantly different. Dissolved oxygen decreased from open water into vegetation where it approached anoxia. Water hyacinth appeared to enhance the abundance and diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates at the interface with the open water. The impoverished abundance and diversity of the macroinvertebrates deeper into the vegetation mats suggested negative environmental impacts of the water hyacinth when the fringe is too wide. Further research is recommended to establish the optimum width of the fringe of stationery water hyacinth that promotes maximum abundance and diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates and, possibly, of other aquatic life. Since this study in 1997, there has been a dramatic decrease in Eichhornia infestations and by June 2000 it appeared largely to exist only as fringing vegetation in bays and inlets.  相似文献

Ecological studies of Chloroflexis,a gliding photosynthetic bacterium   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Chloroflexis, a gliding, filamentous, photosynthetic bacterium, is present in the stratified algal-bacterial mats which occur in the 50°–70°C temperature range of alkaline hot spring effluents. The organism is in association with the alga in the upper, algal layer, and also forms thick, orange mats beneath the algal layer. Natural populations of Chloroflexis from these mats demonstrated light-stimulated uptake of some 14C-labelled organic compounds. Photosynthetic 14CO2 fixation by natural samples of Chloroflexis was investigated with respect to temperature, light intensity and mat depth. Bacterial photosynthesis was determined in samples in which algae were present by use of the inhibitor 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU). Bacterial photosynthesis was maximal at depths down to about 3 mm and then decreased rapidly to very low levels at greater depths. The greatest amounts of bacteriochlorophyll pigments were also concentrated in the top 3–4 mm of the mat. The optimum light intensity for bacterial photosynthesis (about 400 ft-c) was considerably lower than the normal summer light intensity at the surface of the mat (5000-8000 ft-c).The temperature optima for photosynthesis by the bacterial component of natural mat samples from several sites of different temperatures in a hot spring thermal gradient were determined. Temperature optima approximated the environmental temperatures, indicative of the occurrence of strains of Chloroflexis adapted to different temperatures. Although bacterial standing crop was greatest in the temperature range 50°–55°C, maximum photosynthetic efficiency was observed at about 45°C. Sulfide was stimulatory to photosynthetic 14CO2 fixation by naturally occurring populations of Chloroflexis under field conditions. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that Chloroflexis may utilize sulfide as an electron donor for photosynthetic CO2 reduction. However, it is also likely that Chloroflexis grows photoheterotrophically in these mats, obtaining organic compounds from algal excretory products.  相似文献
