Models suggest that phenotypic plasticity is maintained in situations where the optimal phenotype differs through time or space, so that selection acts in different directions in different environments. Some empirical work supports the general premise of this prediction because phenotypes induced by a particular environment sometimes perform better than other phenotypes when tested in that environment. We have extended these results by estimating the targets of selection in Pseudacris triseriata tadpoles in environments without predators and with larval Anax dragonflies. Tadpoles displayed significant behavioral and morphological plasticity when reared in the presence and absence of nonlethal dragonflies for 32 days in cattle tanks. We measured selection in the absence of free predators by regressing growth and survival in the tanks against activity and several measures of tail and body shape. We measured selection in the presence of predators by exposing groups of 10 tadpoles to Anax in overnight predation trials and regressing the average phenotype of survivors against the number of tadpoles killed. Selection in the two environments acted in opposite directions on both tail and body shape, although the affected fitness components were different. In the presence of Anax, tadpoles with shallow and narrow body, deep tail fin, and wide tail muscle survived best. In the absence of free predators, tadpoles with narrow tail muscle grew significantly faster, and those with shallow tail fin and deep body grew somewhat faster. Activity was unrelated to survival or growth in either environment. Developmental plasticity in tail shape closely paralleled selection, because tail fin depth increased after long-term exposure to Anax and tail muscle width tended to increase. In contrast, there was no plasticity in body shape in spite of strong selection for decreasing body depth. Thus, when confronted with a dragonfly predator, P. triseriata tadpoles adjusted their tail shape (but not body shape) almost exactly in the direction of selection imposed by Anax. These results suggest that phenotypic plasticity in some morphological traits, such as tail depth and tail muscle width, has evolved under intermittent selection by dragonflies. Other traits that undergo selection by dragonflies, such as body morphology, appear developmentally rigid, perhaps because of historically strong opposing selection in nature or other constraints.  相似文献

We examined the effects of tail autotomy on survivorship and body growth of both adult and juvenile Uta stansburiana by directly manipulating tail condition. Tail loss decreased neither survivorship nor rate of body growth for individuals in two natural populations. Lack of an influence of tail loss on survivorship in these two populations may be the result of high mortality. Under high mortality any differential effects of tail loss will be lower than in populations facing lower mortality. Growth experiments in the laboratory demonstrated that, under conditions of minimal environmental variation and social interactions, there is no tradeoff between body growth and tail regeneration as has been suggested for other species of lizards. One possible reason for this difference is that U. stansburiana does not use the tail as a storage organ for lipids. The original and regenerated tails are composed mainly of protein. In general, any differential body growth between tailed and tailless individuals may be due to social interactions and not a diversion of limited energy into tail regeneration.  相似文献

This study addresses several basic questions relating to the roles of badges and displays in establishing social structure in male Phrynocephalus vlangalii. Significant differences in body mass and condition were found between resident and floater males of P. vlangalii, and resident males engaged in tail curling and agonistic interactions more frequently than floater males. Frequency of tail curling was correlated negatively with body mass in floater males, but was not correlated with body mass and condition in resident males. Relative tail-tip badge size, relative belly patch size and relative tail length could significantly predict an individual’s body mass, and body condition was positively correlated with relative tail length, suggesting that resident males may establish their social dominance by communicating their body mass and condition through frequent tail curling.  相似文献

Regional differences in potential difference and short-circuit current between the body (dorsal) and the tail skin during metamorphosis of Rana catesbeiana tadpoles were investigated. In body skin, the potential difference and the short-circuit current across the skin develop in two successive steps. At stage XX, the potential difference and the short-circuit current across the body skins were amiloride-insensitive (1st step). At stage XXII, however, amiloride-sensitive potential difference and the short circuit current appeared (2nd step). By contrast, in tail skin the potential difference and the short-circuit current remained amiloride-insensitive (1st step) even at stage XXIII. Since the tail regresses after stage XXIII, the appearance of the second step could not be followed in vivo. To determine whether or not the second step can be induced in the tail, tail skin was cultured under conditions where the skin survives for a much longer period than it does in normally developing tadpoles. Such cultured tail skin generated the amiloride-sensitive potential difference and the short-circuit current and cultured body skin also generated them. Therefore, development of the 2nd step in the tail skin may be delayed in vivo. To characterize the differences between body and tail skin, skins were mutally grafted between body and tail at stage XIII–XV. The body skin grafted on the tail underwent both the 1st and 2nd steps by stage XXII, whereas the tail skin grafted on the body only showed the 1st step by the same stage. Blue tail coloration in hatchling skinks (Eumeces fasciatus and E. laticeps) appears to be an antipredatory adaptation that distracts attention away from the body to the tail. The tail itself serves as a decoy that may be autotomized as a final defense against capture. The effectiveness of intact tails in deflecting attacks from the body was 50% against scarlet kingsnakes in the experimental conditions used. Brightness rather than hue presumably accounts for the higher attack frequency on blue than black tails in this study, but the blue color may have evolved in response to avian predation. Repeated predation without ill effects by several predators allows rejection of the hypothesis that the blue tail is aposematic for the predators tested. The hypothesis that blue tails provide stimuli inhibiting aggression or predation by adult male conspecifics is untenable for E. laticeps because adult males readily eat intact hatchlings. Although this study provides no statistical evidence that blue tail coloration inhibits attack by female E. laticeps on hatchlings, the trend of predation rates on blue- and black-tailed hatchlings is in the direction predicted for inhibition.  相似文献

Behavioral responses of the Japanese lacertid lizard,Takydromus tachydromoides, to its natural predator, the Japanese striped snake,Elaphe quadrivirgata, were examined under laboratory conditions.T. tachydromoides often thrashed its tail rapidly from side to side for short intervals (less than 0.5 s), usually just before fleeing away from an approaching snake. This tail vibration behavior appears to distract the snake away from the vulnerabl parts of the body to the tail, as tail vibration occurred more frequently when the head of the snake was closer to the lizard's head than its tail. Distraction of snake attack by this action is suggested to be an antipredator tactic, because it was demonstrated that the vibration increased the chance of escape.  相似文献

1. Daphnia lumholtzi, not previously reported in North America, was found in a small reservoir in East Texas in January, 1991, This species possesses extremely long spines and large fornices; an allometric study was performed to detect any temporal differences in specific growth rates of the spines relative to the body. 2. In nature, mature females attained 1.8mm body length, excluding spines, but when the head and tail spines are included, the total length reached a maximum of 5.6mm. 3. Differences in the growth patterns of the head spine and the tail spine relative to the body existed for D. lumholtzi from January to March 1991. Both the head and the tail spines grew at a faster rate than the body during all 3 months although the rates varied between them. The results contradict the invertebrate predation hypothesis (Dodson, 1974) in that D. lumholtzi's head and tail spines continue to grow during adulthood instead of stopping after the juvenile instars. 4. The head spines grew at a constant allometric rate over time while the tail spine grew faster as the temperature increased. Both varied significantly in length over the 3 months, with animals having the shortest spines in February and the longest in March.  相似文献

Abstract Caudal autotomy is an effective defensive strategy used by many lizards to facilitate escape during predatory encounters. However, it has several potentially severe consequences, including a range of energetic costs that are believed to result from the depletion of caudal lipid reserves during tail loss. In this study we examined the possible effect of caudal autotomy on the energetic reserves of a small viviparous skink, Niveoscincus metallicus (O'Shaughnessy 1874). Animals of each sex were collected on three occasions to assess the distribution of lipid stores. In addition, the frequency and position of naturally occurring tail breaks were determined. Both abdominal and caudal lipid stores are present in N. metallicus; however, caudal fat bodies comprise the majority (55–78%) of these fat reserves. Temporal variation in fat body mass, both abdominal and caudal, was evident. There was a significant relationship between the two fat stores, which was distorted in pregnant females, when relatively more fat was stored in the tail. Examination of the distribution of caudal fat in the tail revealed that the majority (90–95%) occurs within the proximal third of the tail. The remainder is located in the middle portion of the tail, with no reserves in the most distal tail section. During late pregnancy, females store relatively more fat closer to the body. The frequency of tail loss in a natural population of N. metallicus was extremely high (78%). Tail breaks were normally distributed along the length of the tail (i.e. most near the middle and fewer distal and proximal breaks). Thus there was a relatively high chance of some lipid depletion as a result of tail loss, but because 76% of breaks occur in the middle and distal thirds of the tail, there is a high probability that tail loss results in only minimal (i.e. <10%) lipid depletion. This is the first instance where both the energetic ‘value’ of the tail and the likelihood of lipid depletion during tail loss have been determined in a lizard. Overall, the combination of the aggregation of caudal fat reserves and position of naturally occurring tail breaks may enable N. metallicus to combine caudal fat storage and tail autotomy with minimal conflict.  相似文献

In this study, assortative mating for different morphological traits was studied in a captive population of house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Males were larger than females. Assortative mating was found for tail length, wing length and general body size. Males with larger badge size mated with females with longer tails. The strongest assortative mating occurred for tail length (r=0.77), and this assortative mating remained significant after controlling for wing length, mass and tarsus length, suggesting that it was not an artefact of assortative mating for body size. The possibility of sexual selection for tail length in the house sparrow is discussed.  相似文献

Sinking terminal velocities of D. middendorffiana (with and without tail spine) were measured and correlated with morphological parameters and water temperature. The main dimensions of the body showed positive growths rate correlations with the body weight. In turn, negative allometric variation was observed in the tail-spine length. The density of D. middendorffiana was age specific, and decreased as the individual grew. No differences in the sinking terminal velocities and trajectories between individuals with and without tail spine were observed. The observed hydrodynamic characteristics of D. middendorffiana were simulated by means of a model based on equivalent ellipsoids and spheres. The analysis showed that the effects of shape and the body projections are negligible on the sinking rates of D. middendorffiana.  相似文献

无尾两栖类蝌蚪的尾巴通过产生强大的游泳速度在反捕食中起到了重要的作用。以镇海林蛙(Rana zhenhaiensis)蝌蚪为实验动物来评估断尾的运动代价。以74尾具有完整尾蝌蚪作为实验组,通过截去不同尾长片段,人为分成轻微尾损伤组(30%)和严重尾损伤组(30%)并测定两组蝌蚪在断尾前后的游泳速度。以16尾完整尾蝌蚪作为对照组在实验组断尾前后同时进行游泳速度的测定。实验结果显示断尾影响蝌蚪的游泳速度,但仅在尾损伤程度达到尾长的30%以上时才产生不利的影响。这表明轻微尾损伤并不对镇海林蛙蝌蚪的游泳速度产生严重影响。在断尾前后实验组蝌蚪的游泳速度均与尾长呈正相关。在相同尾长状态下,尾损伤蝌蚪的相对游泳速度明显快于完整尾蝌蚪。因此,尾损伤的镇海林蛙蝌蚪有可能通过改变尾和身体的摆动频次等方式在断尾后对游泳速度进行了一定的补偿。尾损伤在野外频繁发生于蝌蚪的尾远端,据此推测镇海林蛙蝌蚪在自然条件下的尾损伤并不会产生严重运动代价。  相似文献

A Chinese population of the little‐known freshwater hypotrich Uroleptus longicaudatus was investigated with emphasis on its living morphology and infraciliature. The characteristic, tripartite body consists of a narrowed (cephalized) anterior portion, a slender trunk, and a long, slender, and strongly contractile tail occupying up to 30% of body length. Contracted specimens with a tail length of about 12% closely resemble Uroleptus limnetis which has, like U. longicaudatus, its type locality on the East Coast of the United States so that it cannot be excluded that these two species are synonymous. Thus, we propose to subsume these and few other little‐known species, which are not clearly distinguishable at the present state of knowledge, as U. limnetis complex. The morphogenesis of U. longicaudatus proceeds as in most congeners. The phylogenetic analyses reveal that Uroleptus is a monophyletic group, but due to the lack of detailed morphological data of the populations sequenced so far, the relationships within this taxon remain obscure. For the objective determination of the tail length of hypotrichs, we propose the “1/3‐method”, which says that the tail commences at that body width which corresponds one‐third of the maximum width. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), one of the most lethal human cancers, can be divided into head and body/tail cancers anatomically. We previously reported a prognostic relevance of tumour location in resectable PDAC. This study aimed to further explore the mechanism underlying the molecular diversity between the head and body/tail of PDACs. We detected tumour genomes in 154 resectable (surgery) and non-resectable (biopsy) PDACs using a next-generation sequencing panel. Wilcoxon's rank test or Fisher's exact test was used for evaluating associations between clinical characteristics, mutation frequency and survival probability between the two cohorts. Compared with pancreatic head cancers, pancreatic body/tail cancers showed significantly more enriched genomic alterations in KRAS (97.1% vs 82.4%, P = 0.004) and SMAD4 (42.0% vs 21.2%, P = 0.008). At early stages (I-II), the SMAD4 mutation rate was significantly higher in pancreatic body/tail cancers than pancreatic head cancers (56.0% vs 26.5%, P = 0.021). At late stages (III-IV), pancreatic body/tail cancers presented significantly higher KRAS mutation rate (100.0% vs 75.8%, P = 0.001), higher frequency of MAPK pathway mutation (100% vs 87.8%, P = 0.040) and lower rates of druggable genomic alterations (30.8% vs 57.6%, P = 0.030) than pancreatic head cancers. Our work points out that pancreatic body/tail cancer seems to be more malignant than pancreatic head cancer at late stages.  相似文献

The Neotropical hinged-tooth, coral snake mimics of the genus Scaphiodontophis are characterized by extremely long and disproportionately thick tails that are extremely fragile. Both the coloration and tail structure are putative antipredator devices. While all examples have components of the coloration that match those of the venomous coral snakes (family Elapidae), the range of variation is extreme, leading to controversy on the status of various populations, including nine named taxa. Individual, ontogenetic and geographic variation in scutellation and head, body and tail coloration were analysed to evaluate population status and possible evolutionary trends based on a sample of 183 examples from Mexico, Central America and Colombia. Variation in subcaudal counts show population differences (higher in Mexico and upper Central America) but are not congruent with geographic variation in coloration. Generally snakes from north of Nicaragua and from central and eastern Panama have a pattern of dyads (black-light-black bands separating red bands), those from Atlantic slope Nicaragua to western Panama a pattern of monads (light-black-light bands separating the red ones) and those from Colombia have both pattern types on the same snake. The dyads and/or monads may be present the length of the body and tail, restricted to the anterior part of the body or on the entire body or on the anterior part of the body and on the tail. Two or more of these variants may occur at a single geographic locality or only a single one may be present. Head and nuchal colour patterns (Z, A, V and Du) are relatively consistent geographically. The Adantic slope Guatemala, Belize and Honduras population have the A pattern, those of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and western Panama the V pattern, and those in Colombia a Du pattern. Other populations have the Z coloration. Intermediate conditions in coloration of the body and tail and head and neck are found at localities intermediate between the main pattern types, indicating intergradation among adjacent populations. Consequently, we regard these snakes as representative of a single species, Scaphiodontophis annulatus Dumeril and Bibron and the eight other names applied to various populations and individuals as synonyms. Analysis of colour pattern leads us to the conclusion that the tricolour pattern evolved from a uniform one through a lineate-spotted condition (usually present on the non-tricolour portions of the snake) through a bicolour red and black pattern to the dyadal condition. The monadal pattern in turn was derived from the dyadal one. The data further indicates that tricolour components first appeared anteriorly and progressively expanded posteriorly. The evolutionary sequence for the head and nuchal pattern appears to be A → Z → V → Du S. annulatus has a series of jaw and tooth specializations designed for rapid processing of hard-bodied prey found during diurnal foraging in the leaf-litter. Urotomy in this species involves intervertebral tail-breakage (pseudoautotomy) without regeneration. Evidence is presented supporting the long-tail multiple break hypothesis as applicable to Scaphiodontophis and other snakes with similar tail morphology (specialized pseudoautotomy). This is in contrast to snakes with similar tail morphology (specialized pseudoautotomy). This is in contrast to Coniophanes and other snakes with a high incidence of urotomy having long but unspecialized tails (unspecialized pseudoautotomy) without multiple breaks over time. All Scaphiodontophis colour patterns have a general resemblance to that of venomous coral snakes and offer protection from generalizing predators having innate or other triggered responses to coral snake colours. The aposematic effect is enhanced by tail thrashing and head twitching behaviours. The characteristic foraging pose of S. annulatus, which tends to expose the head and anterior body, makes even the incomplete tricolour pattern effective as an antipredator defence. No evidence supports the idea that tail thrashing or the incomplete tricolour pattern directs the predator attacks to the tail to expedite pseudoautotomy. Coral snake mimicry and specialized pseudoautotomy are shown not to be co-evolved and pseudautotomy seems to have evolved long before mimetic coloration in this genus.  相似文献

Summary A biometric analysis of body proportions with presumably functional meaning for microhabitat selection was made on 12 species of Liolaemus lizards in central Chile. Characters studied were forelimb length, hindlimb length, tail length (all standardized by the corresponding snout-vent length), and the ratio forelimb/hindlimb length. It is shown that irrespective of terrestrial, saxicolous, or arboreal habits, Liolaemus species are remarkably similar in body proportions. The only exceptions are: L. lemniscatus, an open ground-dweller which exhibits significantly shorter limbs; and L. chiliensis and L. schroederi, both shrub-climbers which exhibit significantly longer tail. It is concluded that the adaptive radiation of Liolaemus lizards in central Chile has been accomplished mainly by diversification of activity time, food size, and microhabitat type. Morphological divergence in body proportions seems to have played an unimportant role.  相似文献

The effects on thyroid hormone-dependent gene biomarker responses of the persistent organochlorine pesticide metabolite 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE) were investigated after exposure of 4-week-old European common frog (Rana temporaria) (stage 36) tadpoles to two (0.001 and 0.01 ppm) DDE concentrations. Total body weight, total length, and tail length and width increased after 3-day exposure to DDE. Expression patterns of genes encoding for growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSHβ) and thyroid hormone receptor (TRα and TRβ) isoforms were evaluated in the head, body and tail regions using a validated real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The mRNA expression of growth hormone in the body, and TSHβ in the head showed significant DDE concentration-dependent decreases. While DDE caused variable effects on TRα mRNA steady-state, the expression of TRβ was significantly decreased in the tail by DDE in a concentration-specific manner. The effect of DDE exposure on TRβ mRNA expression showed a negative correlation with tail length and width during the exposure period. The unique pattern of a DDE-induced decrease of tail TRβ expression probably reflects the significant role of this thyroid hormone receptor isoform in tail re-absorption and overall metamorphosis in anuran species. Therefore, the present study shows that the evaluation of thyroid hormone-dependent genes may represent quantitative biomarkers of acute exposure to organochlorine pesticides in anuran species during critical developmental periods such as metamorphosis. Given the widespread environmental levels of DDT and its metabolites, these pollutants will remain a subject of concern and their effects on anuran species should be studied in more detail.  相似文献

The black nuptial plumage of the highly polygynous male red‐collared widowbird (Euplectes ardens) comprises a red carotenoid‐based collar patch and a long graduated tail (c. 22 cm). Tail length was the strongest predictor of male mating success in a previous selection analysis, motivating this experimental test of the relative importance of tail plumes in male contest competition and female choice. Males were assigned to either a short (12.5 cm) or control (20 cm) tail manipulation prior to territory establishment. Male contest competition was unaffected by the tail treatments as the shortened‐ and control‐tailed males were equally successful in acquiring territories of similar size and quality. In contrast, however, although the longer‐tailed control males spent less time in flight and courtship displays, they attracted significantly more prospecting and nearly three times as many nesting females to their territories compared to the short‐tailed males. In further support of tail length as the primary mate choice cue, none of the other measured and potential female cues (e.g. body size, collar colorimetrics, territorial behaviours or territory quality) influenced male reproductive success. In addition to potentially increasing detectability (‘signal efficacy’), the long tail is also a likely indicator of male quality (‘signal content’). Despite the higher activities of short‐tailed males, control‐tailed males showed a steeper decline in condition (relative body mass) during the breeding season. Furthermore, both short‐ and control‐tailed residents lost more condition than did the short‐ and control‐treated floaters (males not establishing territories), suggesting an interaction between tail length and the costs of territory acquisition, defence and courtship displays. Caracaras, falcons and forest falcons, which are representative of the three subfamilies of the family Falconidae, have different flight behaviour. Since, during flight, the tail works in coordination with the wings, the tail muscles could be indicative of the type of flight behaviour. The aim of this work was to describe in detail the little-known tail muscles of the Falconidae and to explore their possible association with this different behaviour, by using the muscle mass as an indicator. To this end, the tail muscles of 18 specimens representing the three subfamilies of Falconidae were dissected, weighed and their percentage to the body mass calculated. The possible differences in tail muscle mass between Falconinae and Polyborinae were explored with a Bayesian statistical approach. In all species, the muscles depressor caudae and levator caudae had the highest mass values (0.028%–0.329% and 0.120%–0.274%, respectively), in accordance with the key movements performed during flight, that is, the tail depression and elevation. The total muscle masses of Falconinae and those of Polyborinae were significantly different (p < 0.05). This difference can be related with the different flight behaviour of falcons and caracaras, that is, fast and erratic flight, respectively.  相似文献
