Background: The dwarf shrub Vaccinium myrtillus – with high cover, height, and fruit production – benefits capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus).

Aims: Our aim was to quantify landscape (e.g. elevation, geographic location, and precipitation), site (e.g. overstorey cover and stoniness) and very fine scale factors (e.g. spatial associations in the understorey) that affect cover, height, and fruit production of V. myrtillus in subalpine forests in thePyrenees, with understorey usually dominated by Rhododendron ferrugineum.

Methods: We sampled 155 plots (0.5 m × 5 m) in six sites. For each plot, in the understorey layer, we assessed species cover, height for R. ferrugineum and V. myrtillus, number of total fruits in V. myrtillus, and spatial associations among V. myrtillus and the remaining cover types.

Results: Overstorey cover negatively influenced V. myrtillus cover, its height, and particularly, the number of fruits, which was also negatively influenced by R. ferrugineum cover. Associations between R. ferrugineum and V. myrtillus were site dependent, while V. myrtillus showed mostly positive associations with grasses and mosses.

Conclusions: Reducing overstorey and R. ferrugineum cover has the strongest positive effect on increasing V. myrtillus fruit production, but with additional positive effects on V. myrtillus cover and height. Increases in grass and moss coverage could favour V. myrtillus.  相似文献

Abstract

The present paper details the results of a phytosociological study on Vaccinium myrtillus communities in the Monti Reatini (Central Apennines). A comparison is reported with Vaccinium communities from the rest of the Italian peninsula (already described), showing the coenological and syntaxonomical autonomy of the Monti Reatini types. The Authors include the Monti Reatini shrublands with V. myrtillus and Juniperus nana in the Pino-Juniperetea class and secondary vegetation forms dynamically linked to them in two new Poo violaceae-Nardetum subassociations: Poo violaceae-Nardetum brachypodietosum rupestris and Poo violaceae-Nardetum caricetosum kitaibelianae.  相似文献

Net primary production (NPP) of two Vaccinium species (V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum) was determined in three subalpine heath communities on the Northern Apennines (N. Italy). The main objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that two species sharing the same plant functional type (deciduous dwarf shrub) have similar growth performances along environmental gradients. The second objective was to assess whether, and to what extent, NPP of the two species was associated with functional and morphological traits, which can affect plant growth in relation to nutrient status. Total community NPP in the three communities was closely related to soil nutrient availability. NPP of V. uliginosum did not vary among communities, while that of V. myrtillus peaked in the most fertile habitat. The N:P ratio in the whole plant as well as in the leaves of the two shrubs exactly mirrored the among-community pattern in soil phosphate concentration. In particular, the foliar N:P ratio in both V. uliginosum and V. myrtillus was >16 in the poorer sites, which indicates P limitation. I concluded that the growth response of the two shrubs in relation to soil nutrient availability is individualistic. Growth of V. myrtillus is P-limited while that of V. uliginosum is not.  相似文献

Question: Do soil water content and/or soil nitrogen (N) content and/or soil phosphorus (P) content affect the biomass of Vaccinium myrtillus and V. vitis‐idaea in a sub‐alpine heath? Location: Dolomites, northern Italy, 1800 m a.s.l. Methods: We determined above‐ground and below‐ground biomass of the shrubs at three sites, each on a different substrate type. At each site, we determined soil N‐ and P‐contents. We also determined leaf water potential (Psi;1), N‐ and P‐concentrations in plant tissues and litter, as well as δ13C and δ15N in mature leaves. Results: V. myrtillus biomass was highest at the silicate site, V. vitis‐idaea biomass was highest at the carbonate site. Both shrubs had low biomass at the peat site, possibly due to a toxic effect of waterlogging in wet soils. For both species, pre‐dawn Psi;1 indicated optimal hydration and midday Psi;1 did not show any sign of water stress. Water use efficiency (WUE) did not differ among sites for any species. Whole‐plant nutrient concentrations showed that, with increasing biomass, N was diluted in V. myrtillus tissues while P was diluted in V. vitis‐idaea tissues. Foliar N‐concentration was higher overall for V. myrtillus. Foliar P‐concentration in V. myrtillus peaked at the silicate site. Foliar N : P ratios suggested that V. myrtillus was primarily P‐limited and V. vitis‐idaea primarily N‐limited. Conclusions: Water content affected the distribution of the two shrubs in a similar way, higher P‐availability in the soil enhanced V. myrtillus rather than V. vitis‐idaea.  相似文献

Summary

On the moors studied Vaccinium myrtillus produced many berries containing highly viable seed, yet seedlings were rare. Offtake of berries by birds or mammalian herbivores was apparently minor, most berries simply falling from the bushes when ripe. Fallen berries quickly disappeared, probably being removed by small rodents. Berries were fed experimentally to captive field voles and capercaillies, and it was found that only c. 1% of the seeds survived. For the voles, most of these viable seeds probably resulted from contamination of the droppings with partially-eaten berries or discarded extracted seeds, processes which must contribute to dispersal in the wild. The soil seed-bank was shown to be small, and the viability of buried seed declined from c. 90% to c. 20% in 3 years, due to decay in the soil H horizon and premature germination in the litter layer. Fewer seedlings established from experimental sowings on grass and Vaccinium myrtillus turf than on bare peat. We conclude that Vaccinium myrtillus has a seed-dispersal strategy which secures some long-distance movement by frugivores at the expense of much lost seed, and that the small seed-bank and low numbers of seedlings result from poor defence of the seeds and weak competitive ability of the seedlings; other attributes of Vaccinium myrtillus, e.g. efficient vegetative reproduction, compensate for these losses and enable it to be a successful species.  相似文献

Abstract. Humus profiles were sampled along an altitudinal gradient in the Macot‐La‐Plagne Forest (France, northern Alps) to investigate variation occurring under carpets of Vaccinium myrtillus present within Picea abies forests. The vertical distribution of subterranean organs of V. myrtillus was compared with (1) that of P. abies roots and other accompanying vegetation and (2) other components of humus profiles, in particular humified organic matter mainly consisting of animal faeces. It was shown that V. myrtillus roots were mostly concentrated in mineral horizons, while P. abies roots and V. myrtillus rhizomes occupied litter horizons. This was interpreted in terms of competition for nutrient capture between P. abies and V. myrtillus. The effects of altitude were (1) a change in the vegetation accompanying V. myrtillus in dense V. myrtillus carpets, bryophytes at the montane level being replaced by forbs at the sub‐alpine level and (2) a decrease in the thickness of ecto‐organic horizons. This was interpreted as a shift from a moder system characterized by recalcitrant litter (moss) processed by an active faunal community (stabilized in the form of animal faeces) to a mor system characterized by low animal abundance but with litter of better quality which is easily leached in the absence of prominent faunal activity.  相似文献

The Arctic is experiencing the greatest climate change in winter, including increases in freeze–thaw cycles that can result in ice encasement of vegetation. Ice encasement can expose plants to hypoxia and greater temperature extremes, but currently the impacts of icing on plants in the field remain little understood. With this in mind, a unique field manipulation experiment was established in heathland in northern Sweden with ice encasement simulated in early March 2008, 2009 and 2010 until natural thaw each spring. In the following summers we assessed the impacts on flowering, bud phenology, shoot growth and mortality and leaf damage (measured by chlorophyll fluorescence and electrolyte leakage) of the three dominant dwarf shrub species Empetrum nigrum, Vaccinium vitis‐idaea (both evergreen) and Vaccinium myrtillus (deciduous). Two consecutive winters of icing decreased V. vitis‐idaea flowering by 57%, while flowering of V. myrtillus and E. nigrum remained unaffected. Vaccinium myrtillus showed earlier budburst but shoot growth for all species was unchanged. Shoot mortality of V. myrtillus and V. vitis‐idaea increased after the first year (by 70 and 165%, respectively) and again for V. myrtillus following the third year (by 67%), while E. nigrum shoot mortality remained unaffected, as were chlorophyll fluorescence and electrolyte leakage in all species. Overall, the sub‐arctic heathland was relatively tolerant to icing, but the considerable shoot mortality of V. myrtillus contrasting with the general tolerance of E. nigrum suggests plant community structure in the longer term could change if winters continue to see a greater frequency of icing events.  相似文献

The effects of experimental nitrogen (N) additions (0, 12.5, and 50 kg N ha−1 y−1) on long-term (12 years) understorey vegetation dynamics were examined in a boreal forest. The results showed that two types of natural enemies of the dominant dwarf-shrub Vaccinium myrtillus (pathogenic fungus of the species Valdensia heterodoxa and herbivorous larvae of the genus Operophtera) influenced the vegetation dynamics. The pathogenic fungus, causing premature leaf-shed of V. myrtillus, showed a strong positive N response during the initial 5-year period. For the larvae, a relatively modest N response was overshadowed by an almost 40-fold population increase during an outbreak event that followed the initial 5-year period. This outbreak occurred irrespective of N addition, resulting in V. myrtillus decline and depriving the pathogenic fungus of its substrate. Hence our study demonstrates that vegetation dynamics in this relatively species poor and seemingly simple ecosystem are driven by complex biotic interactions. Further, we show that an important component of these interactions is the temporal alternation of the two natural enemies and, resultant regulation of the dominant plant’s abundance. Finally, we emphasize that long-term data are essential to capture the complexity of this type of biotic interactions. In our case, a short-term study may have resulted in markedly different conclusions regarding effects of N enrichment and the role of biotic interactions for forest vegetation dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract. The relationships between biomass of dwarf shrub species and nutrient gradients of forest soils was studied under field conditions in boreal forests. The biomass-response curves of Vaccinium myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea were fitted against soil nutrient gradients using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). Ecological niches of Vaccinium myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea were evaluated, and effects of nitrogen addition (manipulation of the nutrient gradient) on response function were tested. The Vaccinium species showed statistically significant Gaussian responses along soil nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium gradients, but not along other gradients (K and Mg). Furthermore, manipulation of the nitrogen gradient seemed to have a minor effect on response functions, i.e. addition of nitrogen did not change ecological niches of these species. Ecological optima of V. myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea on the nutrient gradients were about the same. This study suggests that differences in dominance between Vaccinium myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea in boreal forest is not determined by nutrient gradients, but may rather be explained by light conditions and/or moisture availability.  相似文献

Summary

Native pinewoods are fragmentary in extent and floristic integrity. In maintaining and extending these remnants, managers should recognise the diversity of potential communities and the unique mix of species in their flora. At the RSPB Abernethy Forest Reserve management aims to develop a self sustaining forest of natural character over the potential woodland area. A present-natural forest provides one model for the attributes and processes, which this forest should contain. Habitat management experiments have recently commenced investigating ways of increasing blaeberry Vaccinium myrtillus in forest areas, and increasing tree regeneration at the forest edge. The possible wider role of management intervention in pinewoods is discussed.  相似文献

Aronia melanocarpa berries are abundant in polyphenolic compounds. After juice production, the pomace of pressed berries still contains a substantial amount of polyphenolic compounds. For efficient utilization of A. melanocarpa berries and the enhancement of polyphenolic compound yields in Aronia melanocarpa pomace (AMP), total phenolics (TP) and total flavonoids (TF) from AMP were extracted, using ultrasound-assisted aqueous two-phase system (UAE-ATPS) extraction method. First, the influences of ammonium sulfate concentration, ethanol–water ratio, ultrasonic time, and ultrasonic power on TP and TF yields were investigated. On this basis, process variables such as ammonium sulfate concentration (0.30–0.35?g?mL?1), ethanol–water ratio (0.6–0.8), ultrasonic time (40–60?min), and ultrasonic power (175–225?W) were further optimized by implementing Box–Benhnken design with response surface methodology. The experimental results showed that optimal extraction conditions of TP from AMP were as follows: ammonium sulfate concentration of 0.324?g?mL?1, ethanol–water ratio of 0.69, ultrasonic time of 52?min, and ultrasonic power of 200?W. Meanwhile, ammonium sulfate concentration of 0.320?g?mL?1, ethanol–water ratio of 0.71, ultrasonic time of 50?min, and ultrasonic power of 200?W were determined as optimum extraction conditions of TF in AMP. Experimental validation was performed, where TP and TF yields reached 68.15?±?1.04 and 11.67?±?0.63?mg?g?1, respectively. Close agreement was found between experimental and predicted values. Overall, the present results demonstrated that ultrasound-assisted aqueous two-phase system extraction method was successfully used to extract total phenolics and flavonoids in A. melanocarpa pomace.  相似文献

Question: How do N fertilization and disturbance affect the understorey vegetation, microbial properties and soil nutrient concentration in boreal forests? Location: Kuusamo (66°22′N; 29°18′E) and Oulu (65°02′N; 25°47′E) in northern Finland. Methods: We conducted a fully factorial experiment with three factors: site (two levels), N fertilization (four levels) and disturbance (two levels). We measured treatment effects on understorey biomass, vegetation structure, and plant, soil and microbial N and C concentrations. Results: The understorey biomass was not affected by fertilization either in the control or in the disturbance treatment. Fertilization reduced the biomass of deciduous Vaccinium myrtillus. Disturbance had a negative effect on the biomass of V. myrtillus and evergreen Vaccinium vitis‐idaea and decreased the relative proportion of evergreen species. Fertilization and disturbance increased the biomass of grass Deschampsia flexuosa and the relative proportion of graminoids. The amount of NH4+ increased in soil after fertilization, and microbial C decreased after disturbance. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the growth of slow‐growing Vaccinium species and soil microbes in boreal forests are not limited by N availability. However, significant changes in the proportion of dwarf shrubs to graminoids and a decrease in the biomass of V. myrtillus demonstrate the susceptibility of understorey vegetation to N enrichment. N enrichment and disturbance seem to have similar effects on understorey vegetation. Consequently, increasing N does not affect the rate or the direction of recovery after disturbance. Moreover, our study demonstrates the importance of understorey vegetation as a C source for soil microbes in boreal forests.  相似文献

Vaccinium myrtillus and Vaccinium vitis‐idaea are two dwarf shrubs widespread in the European Alps. We studied the hydraulics of these species hypothesizing that (1) the hydraulic architecture of dwarf shrubs differs from trees, (2) hydraulic properties reflect the species' ecological amplitude and (3) hydraulic properties vary spatially and seasonally. Key hydraulic parameters (osmotic potential, turgor loss point, xylem hydraulic conductivity, vulnerability to drought‐induced embolism, stomata closure, drought‐induced cell damage and embolism repair) and related wood anatomical traits (conduit diameter and conduit wall reinforcement) were analyzed at four sites in Tyrol, Austria. Both species exhibited low hydraulic safety as well as low hydraulic efficiency. Fifty percentage embolism accumulated at ?2.08 (V. myrtillus) and ?1.97 MPa (V. vitis‐idaea), 88% stomata closure was at ?2.19 and ?2.35 MPa, respectively. After drought, both species showed embolism repair on re‐watering. Site‐specific variation within species was low, while seasonal changes in embolism resistance and turgor loss point were observed. Results indicate that studied Vaccinium species have a high risk for embolism formation. This is balanced by refilling capacities, which are probably based on the small growth height of dwarf shrubs. V. vitis‐idaea, which occurs on drier sites, showed more efficient repair and a lower turgor loss point than V. myrtillus.  相似文献

The field-layer structure relative to the distribution of canopy gaps was analysed in a subalpine spruce forest in the Babia Góra massif – one of the highest in the Polish West Carpathians. Nineteen synusiae (floristically, physiognomically and ecologically homogenous one-layered vegetation units) in the field-layer were distinguished on the basis of the dominance of 8 vascular plants and 1 moss species. The presence of synusiae was noted in a grid of points spaced at 10 × 10 m which was established in a 14.4 ha area. This grid was then laid over a map of gap distribution. The main results are: 1. Nearly 2/3 of the area was covered with two mono-dominant synusiae: Athyrium distentifolium and Vaccinium myrtillus. 2. The spatial structure of the field layer was related to the distribution of gaps. A significant departure from a random distribution was noted for eight synusiae, which together covered 88% of the area under the spruce canopy and 92% in gaps. 3. The percentage of area covered by Athyrium distentifolium in gaps was nearly twice as great as outside them. A positive relationship to gaps also showed patches dominated by Calamagrostis villosa and Dryopteris dilatata + Rubus idaeus, while a negative relationship occurred for synusiae dominated by: Dryopteris dilatata, Vaccinium myrtillus, V. myrtillus + D. dilatata, and V. myrtillus + Polytrichum formosum. 4. There were significant differences in the structure of the field layer between the understory of closed stands and in gaps larger than 50 m2. This means that even a small-scale disturbance touching a few trees and causing only a small modification in light and soil conditions can result in considerable changes in the field-layer vegetation in subalpine spruce forests.  相似文献

The various specific biomarkers of oxidative stress in plasma from patients with breast cancer, as well as biomarkers (the level of lipid hydroperoxides, conjugated dienes, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) have been described. The aim of our present study was to evaluate the amount of low-molecular-weight thiols (which are physiological free radical scavengers) and establish the effects of the extract from A. melanocarpa on the amount of these thiols in plasma obtained from patients with invasive breast cancer, patients with benign breast diseases and from healthy volunteers. We observed in patients the higher amounts of homocysteine in plasma from patients in comparison to plasma from the control group; however the total level of glutathione, cysteine, cysteinylglycine, and the amount of thiols in reduced and oxidized forms was changed (e.g., in patients, the decrease of glutathione and cysteine reached about 50% of total values). Moreover, we showed that in the presence of the extract of A. melanocarpa (50 μg/mL, 5 min, 37°C), changes in amount of thiols in plasma from patients with invasive breast cancer and patients with benign breast diseases were significantly reduced in vitro. Considering the data presented in this study, we suggest that the extract from A. melanocarpa has an effect on thiol metabolism and the levels of all tested thiols observed in plasma obtained from breast cancer patients.  相似文献

In this study we examined the responses of the dominant understorey plant species, Vaccinium myrtillus, in a Swedish boreal forest to nitrogen applications and repeated damage by clipping. Four years of clipping V. myrtillus reduced its abundance, regardless of whether the clipping was combined with fertilization or not. The treatments also induced changes in growth form and concentration of phenolic compounds in the shoots. Repeated damage to the shrub caused reductions in both the length and diameter of the shoots, while fertilization alone increased their diameter. Fertilization also decreased the concentration of condensed tannins in shoots of V. myrtillus, while clipping had no significant effect in this respect. Condensed tannin concentrations were higher in shoots given the combined fertilization and clipping treatment than in shoots that were fertilized but not clipped. The effect on tannins is in accordance with the predictions of the CNB‐hypothesis. Among the seven individual phenolic compounds analysed only one, a cinnamic acid derivate, showed a significant effect of the treatments. Repeated damage resulted in decreased concentration of this phenolic acid. In addition there was a tendency towards treatment effects on both nitrogen and carbon concentration of the V. myrtillus shoots, but none of these effects were statistically significant. The treatment‐induced changes in V. myrtillus also affected the food preferences of grey‐sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus), resulting in the following order of preference among the treatments: 1) fertilization and clipping, 2) fertilization, 3) control and 4) clipping. Not only biochemical changes, but also changes in growth form were found to influence the preferences, as the voles avoided the smallest shoots. This size‐dependent feeding may partly explain the observed differences in their preferences. Thus, induced changes in growth form need to be considered when conclusions about changes in herbivores’ preference are made.  相似文献

Extreme weather events can have strong negative impacts on species survival and community structure when surpassing lethal thresholds. Extreme, short‐lived, winter warming events in the Arctic rapidly melt snow and expose ecosystems to unseasonably warm air (for instance, 2–10 °C for 2–14 days) but upon return to normal winter climate exposes the ecosystem to much colder temperatures due to the loss of insulating snow. Single events have been shown to reduce plant reproduction and increase shoot mortality, but impacts of multiple events are little understood as are the broader impacts on community structure, growth, carbon balance, and nutrient cycling. To address these issues, we simulated week‐long extreme winter warming events – using infrared heating lamps and soil warming cables – for 3 consecutive years in a sub‐Arctic heathland dominated by the dwarf shrubs Empetrum hermaphroditum, Vaccinium vitis‐idaea (both evergreen) and Vaccinium myrtillus (deciduous). During the growing seasons after the second and third winter event, spring bud burst was delayed by up to a week for E. hermaphroditum and V. myrtillus, and berry production reduced by 11–75% and 52–95% for E. hermaphroditum and V. myrtillus, respectively. Greater shoot mortality occurred in E. hermaphroditum (up to 52%), V. vitis‐idaea (51%), and V. myrtillus (80%). Root growth was reduced by more than 25% but soil nutrient availability remained unaffected. Gross primary productivity was reduced by more than 50% in the summer following the third simulation. Overall, the extent of damage was considerable, and critically plant responses were opposite in direction to the increased growth seen in long‐term summer warming simulations and the ‘greening’ seen for some arctic regions. Given the Arctic is warming more in winter than summer, and extreme events are predicted to become more frequent, this generates large uncertainty in our current understanding of arctic ecosystem responses to climate change.  相似文献

The consequences for plant-insect interactions of atmospheric changes in alpine ecosystems are not well understood. Here, we tested the effects of elevated CO2 on leaf quality in two dwarf shrub species (Vaccinium myrtillus and V. uliginosum) and the response of the alpine grasshopper (Miramella alpina) feeding on these plants in a field experiment at the alpine treeline (2,180 m a.s.l.) in Davos, Switzerland. Relative growth rates (RGR) of M. alpina nymphs were lower when they were feeding on V. myrtillus compared to V. uliginosum, and were affected by elevated CO2 depending on plant species and nymph developmental stage. Changes in RGR correlated with CO2-induced changes in leaf water, nitrogen, and starch concentrations. Elevated CO2 resulted in reduced female adult weight irrespective of plant species, and prolonged development time on V. uliginosum only, but there were no significant differences in nymphal mortality. Newly molted adults of M. alpina produced lighter eggs and less secretion (serving as egg protection) under elevated CO2. When grasshoppers had a choice among four different plant species grown either under ambient or elevated CO2, V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum consumption increased under elevated CO2 in females while it decreased in males compared to ambient CO2-grown leaves. Our findings suggest that rising atmospheric CO2 distinctly affects leaf chemistry in two important dwarf shrub species at the alpine treeline, leading to changes in feeding behavior, growth, and reproduction of the most important insect herbivore in this system. Changes in plant-grasshopper interactions might have significant long-term impacts on herbivore pressure, community dynamics and ecosystem stability in the alpine treeline ecotone.  相似文献

BackgroundThe reactive oxygen species generated by numerous xenobiotic substances has as consequences the impairment of different organs normal function. Many plants pose antioxidant activity to counteract oxidative stress, among them being the chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa). The purpose of present study was to determine if the use of A. melanocarpa extract can counteract the oxidative stress induced by cisplatin administration in rats.Material and methodsThe study was made on forty Wistar rats divided in four groups as follows: C (control): receiving i.p. 1 mL of saline solution; E1: receiving cisplatin 20 mg/kg bw, i.p.; E2: receiving cisplatin 20 mg/kg bw, i.p and A. melanocarpa berry 6 % aqueous extract as drinking water, and CB (control blank): i.p 1 mL saline solution and A. melanocarpa 6 % aqueous extract for four weeks. Results. Administration of Cisplatin was followed by the increase of serum superoxide dismutase (+21.18 %, P < 0.05), catalase (+25.44 %, P < 0.001), glutathione peroxidase (+17.88 %, P < 0.05) and thiobarbituric reactive substances (+28.17 %, P < 0.01) but significantly decreased glutathione reductase (−22.35 %, P < 0.001) level comparative to control, pointing out that administration of cisplatin induced oxidative stress in rats. In groups that received A. melanocarpa extract as drinking water, we noted that the levels of the oxidative stress biomarkers tended to be restored almost to normal levels, which could be a possible good antioxidant used in condition to cisplatin use. Also, we noted a significant (P < 0.001) decrease of total antioxidant capacity in liver and kidney of rats exposed to cisplatin, recovered in those that received chokeberry. Studied trace elements important for the stress oxidative enzymes (Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn) were decreased in cisplatin exposed groups compared to control and mainly all were almost to normal level in groups receiving A. melanocarpa. Conclusion. A. melanocarpa extract due to its antioxidants content could offer protection against free radicals produced as a consequence of cisplatin use.  相似文献
