This study examined the cost of reproduction and photosynthetic characteristics of the reproductive structures of Spiranthes cernua, an agamospermic, terrestrial orchid. Reproduction was frequent: two-thirds of the plants flowered at least 2 yr in a row and one-fourth of the consecutive-year runs were ~3 yr. Neither a significant decrease in leaf area nor a reduced likelihood of flowering was observed following 1 or 2 yr of inflorescence production. While there was a tendency for plants producing >16 flowers to have decreased size the next year, plants with the greatest number of flowers (31+) were the most likely to reproduce. Leaf and reproductive gas exchange were measured in the field. Low but positive rates of net photosynthesis were documented at all stages of inflorescence development. The average rates of photosynthesis for each stage were: leaves, 9.2 mmol CO2/m2s; inflorescence in bud, 3.7 mmol CO2/m2s; inflorescence in flower, 2.5 mmol CO2/m2s and infructescence, 0.2 mmol CO2/m2s. Based on diurnal gas exchange, the contribution of leaves and reproductive structures to seasonal carbon assimilation was 91.6 and 8.4%, respectively. The role of the inflorescence as a source and sink for carbon assimilation may lower the cost of reproduction and support frequent inflorescence production.  相似文献

Abstract: Long-term demographic data have been analyzed to establish possible costs of flowering in the terrestrial orchid Spiranthes spiralis (L.) Chevall. in The Netherlands. Costs of flowering can be expressed as individual plant performance and flowering frequency in relation to the generative or vegetative status in the following year. Flowering in individuals of S. spiralis in a given year (t) is followed by a non-flowering phase in the next growing season (t + 1) in more than 80 % of the plants. The decline in flowering frequency is not a result of the age structure of the population involved because individual plants do not show signs of senescence after 10 - 15 years of aerial presence as an autotrophic plant. Rosettes have a smaller leaf area in the year of flowering (t), compared to the previous (t - 1) and following year (t + 1), due to the allocation of the limited underground resources to both flowering stalk and rosette at the beginning of its growing season. Generative reproduction in S. spiralis has a significant negative impact on both flowering frequency in subsequent years and on rosette size in the year of flowering. The flowering frequency and rosette size in relation to the life history, characterized by the yearly replacement of the underground tuber, is discussed. Better understanding of the life-history strategy, including costs of reproduction, may contribute to the creation of sustainable environmental conditions for growth of S. spiralis, e.g., optimal conditions for photosynthesis during the aboveground stage of the tiny wintergreen rosettes.  相似文献

The hitherto unknown relationships between the European orchid Spiranthes spiralis (L.) Chevall and its internally associated fungi were explored by a combined approach involving microscopy-based investigations at a morpho-histological level as well as by molecular analyses of the identity of the eukaryotic endophytes present in the root tissue of the plant. We found that this orchid which is currently reported to have a vulnerable status in northern Italy, can host and interact with at least nine types of fungi. Some of these fungi show similarity to mycorrhizal genera found in orchids such as the Ceratobasidium-Rhizoctonia group. Other fungi found are from the genera Davidiella (Ascomycota), Leptosphaeria (Ascomycota), Alternaria (Ascomycota), and Malassezia (Basidiomycota), some of which until have not previously been reported to have an endophytic relationship with plants. The repeated occurrence of often pathogenic fungi such as Fusarium oxysporum, Bionectria ochroleuca, and Alternaria sp., within healthy specimens of this orchid suggests a tempered interaction with species that are sometimes deleterious to non-orchid plants. The fact is reminiscent of the symbiotic compromise established by orchids with fungi of the rhizoctonia group.  相似文献

Morphological and ecological similarities between Spiranthes hongkongensis Hu et Barretto and S. sinensis (Pers.) Ames suggest a close evolutionary relationship. The hypothesis that S. hongkongensis evolved through natural hybridization between S. sinensis and S. spiralis was tested using isozyme electrophoresis. A total of 28 isozyme loci were interpreted in the diploid species S. sinensis and S. spiralis, and “fixed heterozygosity” owing to gene duplication was observed at ten of these loci in S. hongkongensis. Isozyme phenotypes provided strong evidence for an allotetraploid origin of S. hongkongensis, with S. sinensis and most likely S. spiralis as its diploid progenitors. Chromosomal counts of S. hongkongensis gave a tetraploid number of ≈60. The allotetraploid species is self-fertile, and completely isolated by sterility barriers from S. sinensis. Premating isolation also exists between S. hongkongensis and S. sinensis due to earlier flowering and autogamy in S. hongkongensis, which may account for the rarity of natural hybrids in the sites of sympatry. The role of the autogamous breeding system in the establishment and spread of S. hongkongensis is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Development of citrus somatic embryos initiated from embryogenic callus generally results in abnormal morphogenesis of somatic embryos. To normalize development, glycerol-induced globular-stage somatic embryos of sweet orange [C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. ‘Hamlin’] were cultured on 6000–8000 MW cutoff cellulose acetate, >400 000 MW cutoff cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), cellulose filter paper, or positive or neutral charged nylon membranes. Only the two cellulose acetate membranes resulted in the development of normal, two-cotyledon, bipolar, heart-shaped embryos, and no aberrant teratoma-like structures. Heart-shaped embryos developed and germinated normally on Murashige and Tucker basal medium with 0.5% sucrose and 1 μM gibberellic acid. Culture of embryogenic callus directly onto cellulose membranes also resulted in the development of normal heart-shaped embryos, indicating that glycerol induction of globular-stage embryos is not necessary. Heart-shaped embryos were not observed when the osmotic potential of the medium was increased by the addition of 2.5–15% polyethylene glycol; neither were they observed when the matric potential of the medium was increased by increasing the gelling agent concentrations of agar and Gelrite from 0.8% to 3% and 0.15% to 0.9%, respectively.  相似文献

An intensive study of the embryology ofSuriana maritima L. is made to provide the information for discussing relationships and systematic position of the genus which is uncertain yet. Notable embryological features ofSuriana include: ovular archesporium multi-celled; ovule unitegmic, campylotropous, and crassinucellate with a nucellar cap; obturator not formed; ovule and seed pachychalazal; chalazal haustorium of endosperm formed; mature seed exalbuminous. Comparisons with possibly related families suggest thatSuriana is distinct from any of the families discussed but best resembles Rutaceae (and Simaroubaceae). Until a study onStylobasium and several other genera, which might be closer toSuriana, comes up in future, we tentatively support the placement ofSuriana as a monotypic family Surianaceae in Rutalessens. The embryology ofLiparis paradoxa andL. rostrata has been studied. The young anther wall consists of an epidermis, endothecium, three middle layers and secretory tapetum with uninucleate cells. In the mature anther, two or three sub-epidermal layers develop fibrous thickenings. The anther wall development corresponds to the massive type. Simultaneous cytokinesis results in decussate, isobilateral, linear, T-shaped and tetrahedral pollen tetrads. The pollinia are compact and at anthesis the pollen grains are 2-celled. Ovules are anatropous, bitegmic and tenuinucellate. Both the integuments are dermal in origin and 2-layered. Development of female gametophyte is of the monosporic, 8-nucleate type. Double fertilization occurs. The primary endosperm nucleus degenerates. The mature embryo is organized from the derivatives of tiers 1, 1, m, and n. Its development conforms to a variation of the Onagrad type. The seed coat is formed entirely by the outer layer of the outer integument. There are three sterile and three fertile valves in the ovary. In the prefertilization stages valves consist of parenchymatous cells. After fertilization, the sterile valves become sclerenchymatous whereas the fertile valves remain parenchymatous. The embryological characters support the disputed systematic position ofLiparis within subtribeLiparidinae ofEpidendreae.  相似文献

Conditions for efficient direct somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration of leaf explants from carnation cultivars Lena (SIM group) and Bulgarian spray cultivars Nasslada, Yanita, Regina and Line 84 were established. Murashige and Skoog (MS) liquid medium supplemented with 1 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 0.2 mg/l 6-benzylaminopurine was used for direct induction of embryoids without an additional callus phase. The first globular structures were observed after 20 days of cultivation. Their further development to the torpedo stage was correlated with the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000). Somatic embryo maturation was promoted by casein hydrolysate (1000 mg/l) in MS liquid media. The percentage conversion of embryos and polyembryos to whole plants varied between 10 and 75% among studied cultivars. Plantlets regenerated by this procedure were morphologically identical to the donor material and developed normally in a greenhouse. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It had previously been assumed that Maxillaria spp. produce no nectar. However, nectar has recently been observed in Maxillaria coccinea (Jacq.) L.O. Williams ex Hodge amongst other species. Furthermore, it is speculated that M. coccinea may be pollinated by hummingbirds. The aim of this paper is to investigate these claims further. METHODS: Light microscopy, histochemistry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. KEY RESULTS: This is the first detailed account of nectar secretion in Maxillaria Ruiz & Pav. A 'faucet and sink' arrangement occurs in M. coccinea. Here, the nectary is represented by a small protuberance upon the ventral surface of the column and nectar collects in a semi-saccate reservoir formed by the fusion of the labellum and the base of the column-foot. The nectary comprises a single-layered epidermis and three or four layers of small subepidermal cells. Beneath these occur several layers of larger parenchyma cells. Epidermal cells lack ectodesmata and have a thin, permeable, reticulate cuticle with associated swellings that coincide with the middle lamella between adjoining epidermal cells. Nectar is thought to pass both along the apoplast and symplast and eventually through the stretched and distended cuticle. The secretory cells are collenchymatous, nucleated and have numerous pits with plasmodesmata, mitochondria, rough ER and plastids with many plastoglobuli but few lamellae. Subsecretory cells have fewer plastids than secretory cells. Nectary cells also contain large intravacuolar protein bodies. The floral morphology of M. coccinea is considered in relation to ornithophily and its nectary compared with a similar protuberance found in the entomophilous species M. parviflora (Poepp. & Endl.) Garay. CONCLUSIONS: Flowers of M. coccinea produce copious amounts of nectar and, despite the absence of field data, their morphology and the exact configuration of their parts argue strongly in favour of ornithophily.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pollination through sexual mimicry, also known as pseudocopulation, has been suggested to occur in some genera of the Neotropical orchid subtribe Maxillariinae. However, it has been demonstrated so far only for Trigonidium obtusum. This study reports and illustrates pollination through sexual mimicry in Mormolyca ringens. METHODS: A total of 70 h were dedicated to the observation of flowers and pollinator behaviour, which was photographically recorded. Flower features involved in pollinator attraction were studied using a stereomicroscope and by SEM analyses. Preliminary observations on the plant breeding system were made by manually self-pollinating flowers. The chemical composition of the fragrance volatiles was determined by GC/MS analysis. KEY RESULTS: The flower features of M. ringens parallel those of other pseudocopulatory flowers. The labellum shape and indument are reminiscent of an insect. Sexually excited drones of Nannotrigona testaceicornis and Scaptotrigona sp. (both in the Apidae: Meliponini) attempt copulation with the labellum and pollinate the flower in the process. In both bee species, the pollinarium is attached to the scutellum. Pollinator behaviour may promote some degree of self-pollination, but preliminary observations indicate that M. ringens flowers are self-incompatible. Flowers are produced all the year round, which ties in with the production of bee males several times a year. The phylogenetic relationships of M. ringens are discussed and a number of morphological and phenological features supporting them are reported. CONCLUSIONS: It is expected that further research could bring to light whether other Maxillariinae species are also pollinated through sexual mimicry. When a definitive and robust phylogeny of this subtribe is available, it should be possible to determine how many times pseudocopulation evolved and its possible evolutionary history.  相似文献

Orchidaceae is one of the largest angiosperm families. Although extensively studied, reports of anatomy of secretory structures of orchids are relatively scarce. Rodriguezia venusta is an epiphytic orchid occurring in Brazil and Peru that has floral and extrafloral nectaries. This study describes the structure and the histochemistry of these secretory structures. Floral and extrafloral nectary samples were obtained from R. venusta plants that were collected in a gallery forest in the State of Bahia, Brazil, and grown in a greenhouse. Theses samples were fixed and processed according to routine procedures in plant anatomy and histochemistry or for scanning electron microscopy. The extrafloral nectaries occur on the edge and sub-edge of young leaves and at the basal portion of bracts that subtend the floral buds. They are structurally very similar, being formed by a nectary parenchyma and a simple epidermis with stomata (“non-structured nectaries”). The floral nectary is inserted at the floral receptacle fused with the labellum base, between this structure and the two inferior connate sepals. This nectary consists of an epidermis with numerous specific nectar secreting trichomes, a subnectary and a nectary parenchyma abundantly supplied by vascular terminations. Its structure is complex and distinct from other floral nectaries described for Orchidaceae.  相似文献

JUDD, W. S., STERN, W. L. & CHEADLE, V. I. 1993. Phylogenetic position of Apostasia and Neuwiedia (Orchidaceae). Cladistic analyses of the phylogenetic relationships of selected orchid taxa were conducted in order to assess the phylogenetic position of Apostasia and Neuwiedia (Orchidaceae: Apostasioideae). These analyses employed newly available anatomical characters, along with several morphological features that had been used in recent phylogenetic analyses of Orchidaceae. Our analyses indicate that Apostasia is more closely related to Neuwiedia than it is to Cypripedioideae. The two genera comprise an apostasiad clade; this clade is the sister-group to a clade including Cypripedioideae and monandrous orchids. The apostasiad clade is diagnosed by the derived features of operculate pollen colpi, Apostasia-type seeds, and vessel members with simple perforation plates. Of these, the presence of simple perforation plates is considered to be the most significant phylogenetically. Therefore, the apostasiads should not be considered ancestral to the remaining orchid groups. Vessel members of the monandrous orchids, as well as the cypripediads, are multiperforate–the hypothesized ancestral state based on the condition in Hypoxidaceae.  相似文献

四数獐牙菜花药四室,药壁发育为双子叶型;绒毡层腺质型。小孢子母细胞减数分裂为同时型, 四分体的排列方式为四面体形;成熟花粉为3-细胞。子房2心皮,2心皮连接处强烈内凸,4列胚珠。薄 珠心,单珠被,直生胚珠。胚囊发育为蓼型。胚乳发育为核型。胚胎发育为茄型酸浆I变型。反足细胞 在胚囊成熟时期宿存。果实成熟时,种子只发育至球型胚阶段。承珠盘存在。与已研究的獐牙菜种类 的胚胎特征相比较,该种存在三个显著的特点:直生胚珠,心皮连接处强烈内凸,承珠盘存在。这三个特 征目前仅在龙胆族中的花锚属中发现。经过性状分析,它们均是演征,此三个共有演征表明四数獐牙菜 与花锚属是一单系群,它们的亲缘关系最近。这与Yun &; Kupfer(1995)的分子证据部分吻合,因为分 子系统树上的花锚单系支包括花锚、四数獐牙菜和北美的密花属(广义獐牙菜属中的密花组),而后者的 胚胎学特征未有任何报道。胚胎学研究暗示四数獐牙菜的分类学等级有待重新评价,广义的獐牙菜属 有可能不是一单系发生群。  相似文献

Somatic embryos were obtained and plants regenerated from immature embryos of onion following culture on embryogenic induction media. Highest rates of somatic embrogenesis resulted from 0.5- to 1.5-mm immature embryos cultured on media containing 5 mg/l of picloram. Somatic embryos formed either directly on the surface of embryos or developed from compact cultures. The production of somatic embryos was significantly affected by the addition of auxin, embryo size and cultivar. The potential of somatic embryogenic cultures for plantlet regeneration has been maintained for over 1 year in some lines. Three types of immature-embryo-derived cultures were characterized by histology. Some cultures were morphologically similar to immature-embryo-derived embryogenic cultures of other monocotyledonous species. The embryology of Swertia tetraptera is reported for the first time. The anther is tetrasporangiate and its wall, of which the development conforms to the dicotyledonous type, is composed of epidermis, endothecium, middle layer and tapetum at the mature stage. The tapetum has dual origin and is similar to the glandular type. Cytokinesis is of the simultaneous type and microspore tetrads are mostly tetrahedral. Pollen grains are mostly 3-celled when shed. The ovary is bicarpellate and unilocular with four series of ovules. The fused margins of two carpels intensively protrude into the locule. The ovule is unitegmic, tenuinucellate and orthotropous. The development of embryo sac is of the Polygonum type. The development of endosperm conforms to the nuclear type and the embryogeny corresponds with the Physalis I variation of Solanad type. Three antipodal cells persist at the mature embryo sac. The embryo is at the globular stage when seeds are released from the capsule. Compared with the other studied species in Swertia, S. tetraptera shows differences from them in three distinctive embryological traits: enlargement and protrusion of the fused margins of two carpels into the ovary locule; orthotropous ovules and a developed hypostase. These three characters were previously only found in the genus Halenia of the tribe Gentianinae in the Gentianaceae,and thus suggest that S. tetraptera should be related to Halenia. The results partly correspond with the molecular evidence (Yuan & Kupfer, 1995). The monophyletic Halenia clade in Yuan & Kupfer's molecular cladogram includes Halenia, S. tetraptera and Frasera (section Frasera in Swertia s. l.); nevertheless, up to now, no embryological study on Frasera has been reported. The embryological results imply that the taxonomic status of S. tetraptera needs to be revaluated and the genus Swertia s. l. may not be a mono-phyletic group. In the synchronous embryogenesis system of sandalwood developed in our laboratory, we observed that the early events of differentiation from freshly induced callus (stage 0) are accomplished in three distinct stages viz., preglobular masses (stage 1), globular embryos (stage 2), and bipolar embryos (stage 3). Transition from stage 0 to 1 was accomplished using 2,4-D and involves a stage specific appearance of two polypeptides of 15 and 30 kDa molecular weight. A 24 kDa polypeptide that was detected as a marked band in extracts of primary callus was not detected in stages 1, 2, and 3. Further, the tissue level of a 50 kDa glycoprotein decreased during transition from stage 2 to stage 3. However, the levels of glycoproteins in the medium were markedly higher in stage 0 cultures compared to those in stage 1. The activities of a protein kinase, glycosidase, and xylanase increased markedly with progressing embryogenesis. Our observations suggest that in addition to being controlled at the level of stage-specific gene expression, somatic embryogenesis in sandalwood is also regulated at the level of controls on cell wall flexibility and posttranslational changes in the pool of preexisting proteins.  相似文献
