Summary

The evolution of the wood ring in Quercus pubescens W. and in Quercus Ilex L. in Florence (from June 1946 to June 1947).

The present study deals with the anatomical characters of the wood ring of Q. pubescens and of Q. Ilex. In both the specimens the wood of the stem and of the young branch has been investigated.

In both plants studied the cambial tissue of the stem starts dividing at the end of April, reaching its maximum activity from May to June.

On the contrary the cambium of the branch differentiates in Q. pubescens a month earlier (18 March-18 April) than in Q. Ilex (18 April-18 May). While in the branch of Q. Ilex a false ring can be seen corresponding to the autumn months, nothing of the kind is found in the branch of Q. pubescens; though it presents a false ring in the stem.

It is difficult to date clearly the period when the cambium stops its activity, but probably it happens at the end of August in the samples of the stem.

The leaf buds of Q. pubescens and of Q. Ilex open during April-May and the young branch is completely developed at the end of June. In both oaks some buds open in autumn, but the small branches are prevented to develop because of the cold.

No comparison can be made between the opening of the buds and the beginning of the cambial activity in the stem and in the branch.

Considering the evolution of these woods and their relationship to climatic factors, we can see that the cambial activity starts during a period of remarkable rainfall and of regular increase of temperature, and stops almost completely at the end of July, when temperature and dryness reach their highest values.

The autumn rainfall would favour again a cambial activity, but the values of the temperature, regularly decreasing, do not allow it.  相似文献

Quercus ilex L. (holm oak) coppices, widespread around the Mediterranean basin, are probably the result of 5 000 years of prolonged human disturbance of the original Quercus pubescens Willd. (downy oak) forests. Since disturbance has almost ceased in recent years, a question arises as to the development of these coppices: will the Q. pubescens forests return, or will Q. ilex remain the dominant species? To investigate the phenomenon, we analyzed the first stages, i.e. germination of the two species in holm oak coppices. Our experiments show that both species germinated better in coppices than in clearings or clear-cuts. Moreover, Q. pubescens appears to be slightly favored above Q. ilex and it is suggested auto-allelopathy is involved, at least partially inhibiting the germination of Q. ilex.  相似文献

One-year-old seedlings of Quercus robur L., Q. petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Fagus sylvatica L. were cultivated in lysimeters and subjected to waterlogging for 17 weeks, interrupted by a five-week drainage period during summer. The growth of Q. robur was less affected by waterlogging than that of Q. petraea and Fagus. Waterlogging resulted in the formation of adventitious roots in Q. robur and Q. petraea, but not in Fagus. In contrast to Fagus, Q. robur and, to a lesser extent, Q. petraea were able to generate roots even below the water table. The hydraulic conductance of the excised root systems, the stomatal conductance and, in Fagus, the leaf water potential and the leaf-mass related hydraulic conductance were decreased by waterlogging. The decrease in the hydraulic conductance was largest in Fagus, and smallest in Q. robur. The roots of Fagus responded to anaerobic conditions with an increase in ethanol concentration. The measurements of nitrate reductase activities in roots and leaves provided no indications of a persistent contribution of NO3 metabolism to the alleviation of waterlogging-induced stress. It is concluded that Q. robur and, to a lesser extent, Q. petraea can tolerate waterlogging periods better than Fagus due to a different pattern of root formation, and to a better adjustment of leaf biomass production to the hydraulic conductivity of the root system. The relationship between chlorophyll (Chl) content and net photosynthetic rate (PN) in an isolated Quercus ilex tree, growing inside Villa Pamphili Park in Rome, was explored. The highest PN was in March, May, and September (10.1 mol m-2 s-1, maximum rate). PN decreased by 65 % (with respect to the yearly maximum) when leaf temperature reached 34 °C, and by 50 % when leaf temperature was 9 °C. The highest Chl contents were in April, October [1.47 g kg-1 (d.m.), maximum value], and December. The lowest Chl content was found in July (0.78 g kg-1). The decrease of PN in July was in close connection with the decrease of Chl content. On the contrary, the high Chl content during winter did not correspond with PN of this season. Discordances between Chl content and PN over the year influenced the regression analysis, which although positive did not show very high correlation coefficients (r = 0.7). The high Chl (a+b) content during most of the year indicated that the photosynthetic apparatus remained basically intact also during stress periods.  相似文献

Abstract

Free beta-indoleacetic acid content in shoots of « Vicia sativa » seedlings grown in different environmental conditions. I. Seedlings grown in the dark and in the light. — Free IAA has been determined in shoots of Vicia sativa seedlings grown in the dark and in the light. The alcohol extract of the vegetable material has been submitted to several processes of purification (changes of PH and washing-out in ether, and successively column as well as thin layer chromatography). Lastly the IAA eluted with alcohol from the chromatographic slides is spectrometrically determined (λ = 280 mμ). The data show that the free IAA is contained to a greater extent in the seedlings grown in the dark in comparison to those grown in the light; this difference permaining in the samples of the same age as well as in those of the same height. The obtained data have been submitted to statistical analysis and both assays have shown to be highly significative.  相似文献

Abstract

Pinus Pinea ovules cultured in vitro. — The degree of growth and autonomical differentiation of Pinus pinea L. proembryo has been studied by means of controlled cultures in vitro of excised ovules.

Proembryos in vitro undergo involution and initials of their growth points change back into parenchimatoides cells.

Completely differentiated embryos cultivated in vitro behave as if they were not physiologicaly ripe in all their parts. Embryos cultured in august, september and october develop into rocotless seedlings. Only embryos cultured in november have roots able to elongate where germinating, but in a still scarce degree in comparison with hypocotile and cotiledons. Hypocotil root ratio is inverted as regards what happens in nature.

The primary endosperm of Pinus pinea L. cultivated in vitro undergoes surface diffuse proliferation.

Sympatric hybridizing oak species provide a model system for studying local adaptation. Disjunct populations of Quercus rubra L. and Quercus ellipsoidalis E. J. Hill at the northern edge of their distribution may harbor important reservoirs of adaptive genetic variation. Genic (expressed sequence tag- simple sequence repeat?=?EST-SSR) and non-genic nuclear microsatellite (nuclear SSR?=?nSSR) markers were used to estimate neutral and potentially adaptive genetic variation in these two supposedly interfertile oak species showing different adaptations to drought. Eleven populations of putative Q. rubra and Q. ellipsoidalis located in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan were characterized using seven EST-SSRs and eight nSSRs. Bayesian cluster analysis revealed two distinct groups corresponding to each species with evidence of low levels of potential introgression. A comparison of the genetic structure of adult trees and seedlings revealed no evidence for selection against hybrids. Overall, similar levels of genetic variation and differentiation between populations and species were found at both EST-SSRs and nSSRs indicating that most EST-SSRs chosen reflect neutral variation. Two loci, 3A05 (nSSR) and GOT021 (EST-SSR, putative histidine kinase 4-like), were identified as putative outlier loci between species showing largely reduced variation in Q. ellipsoidalis. Future analyses of an increased number of EST-SSRs located in functional genes will allow the identification of genes involved in the reproductive isolation between both species.  相似文献

Abstract

The author has examined the cambial activity and the formation of the annual ring in Quercus aegilops from February 1954 to February 1955. Material was collected at Tricase (Lecce) the only Italian locality where this oriental species grows although it is doubtful whether it is spontaneous.

Cambial activity starts in the middle of April both in the main stem and in the branches following flowering and bud development. It goes on for about five months until the second half of August forming a complete growth ring. This annual ring shows the normal sequence of early wood with wide vessels formed during the second half of April and the whole of May, intermediate wood with medium and small size vessels, parenchima, and fibres formed in June-July, and late wood with few small size vessels, parenchima, and fibres formed from the end of July to middle August.

There is no reawakening of cambial activity in autumn even if the climatic conditions are favourable. Tylosis are very easily formed in the wood vessels and by this process the plant can withstand the drought of the Apulian summer.  相似文献

Paternity analysis was used to determine the spatial distribution of male parents of 984 offspring collected from 13 identified mother trees in a natural stand of 5.76 ha and comprising 296 adult trees of Quercus petraea and Q . robur . For seven of the 13 maternal progeny arrays sampled, we found an excess of nearby matings and a preferential direction of pollination. For the remaining progeny arrays, no departure from random distribution of male parents was detected. A common trend among all families was a high percentage (averaging 65% for Q. robur and 69% for Q. petraea ) of offspring that were pollinated by male parents from outside the study site. By pooling the data over all families, the average pollen dispersal curve within the stand was inferred and fitted to a negative exponential distribution. This model extrapolated for distances over the spatial scale of the study stand was insufficient to explain the high level of gene flow detected by the paternity analysis, suggesting a substantial level of long-distance pollination events. The genetic composition of the pollen pools received by each maternal tree was compared and showed significant differentiation that could be attributed to differences in male reproductive success. By contrast, no significant differentiation between the pollen clouds from outside and inside the study stand was detected, suggesting genetic homogeneity between the surrounding forest and the study stand.  相似文献

Abstract

Wood ring evolution in male and female plants of GINKYO BILOBA L. — A morphological examen of the wood rings in Ginkyo biloba L. has been performed on stem sections from specimens of the Botanical Institute of Florence, on wood samples from the collection of Adriano Fiori and on wood cores extracted from the stem of male and female plants growing in the Botanical Garden of Florence.

At the same time the development of the growth ring has been followed on wood samples tacken off the stems of two adult Ginkyo plants growing in the Botanical Garden of Florence.

All the material which has been studied shows the same characters, that is the frequency of uncomplete crescent-shaped wood rings, and consequently a large degree of eccentricity of the stems, depending not only upon the uncomplete wood rings, but also on the changing width of each ring.

Microscopical analysis has pointed out the presence of false rings, limited by discontinuous late wood, particularly in the female plant. This character has been observed only in a fossil wood of Ginkyo bonesii.

It has not been possible to assers how many rings or crescents are formed during one year. From dating records made on wood cores it seems that more than one ring could differentiate during one year, but the cambium shows a very irregular activity in Ginkyo. The factors which control the formation of false and uncomplete wood rings (wood crescents) are also unknown; their formation possibly depending upon environment conditions.

External factors such as water deficiency probably control cambial activity through auxin production. Larson (1964) has shown that draught causes a decrease in tracheids diameter, and the formation of false growth rings; thus the same causes could have been in action in our plants.

Noteworthy are also the data by Gungkel and Thimann (in Larson 1964) showing that auxin content increases downwards in the shoots of Ginkyo and that the apical bud has a very low auxin production, so that it seems possible that in Ginkyo the leaves supply something which the cortical tissue converts into auxin.

Lastly, the almost continuous growth activity of the cambium in Ginkyo must be pointed out, this causes a great difficulty in checking the beginning and the end of this process along the year. It is any way possible to establish the time of the highest cambial activity, which lies in June-July both in the female and in the male plants.  相似文献

A detailed structural study of the major acidic triterpene saponins from European oak heartwood, Quercus robur L. and Q. petraea Liebl., revealed the presence of 2 alpha,3 beta,19 alpha-trihydroxyolean-12-ene-24,28-dioic acid (1), 2 alpha,3 beta,19 alpha-23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-ene-24,28-dioic acid (2), and their corresponding glycosides, 28-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2 alpha,3 beta,19 alpha-trihydroxyolean-12-ene-24,28-dioic acid (3), and 28-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2 alpha,3 beta,19 alpha,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-ene-24,28-dioic acid (4). Compounds were isolated and purified by successive flash chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC, and structurally determined by NMR and LC-ESI/MS in the negative ion mode. Compounds 2 and 4 have been identified for the first time in Quercus species and are new compounds.  相似文献

The distinction between white oak species (section Quercus sensu stricto) is largely based on leaf morphological characters. There is, however, considerable within-species variation and no single species-diagnostic character, possibly due to phenotypic plasticity and/or underlying genetic variation. The aim of the present study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying the high within-species variation for leaf morphological characters in an F(1) full-sib family derived from a cross between Q. robur and Q. robur ssp. slavonica. In accordance with an earlier QTL mapping study in an intraspecific Q. robur full-sib family, polygenic inheritance was detected for leaf morphological characters that are used to discriminate between the species Quercus robur and Q. petraea. QTLs were distributed over ten linkage groups, showed a moderate effect in terms of phenotypic variance explained (PVE) in the mapping pedigree (3.6-9.6%), but accounted for a considerable amount of the parental differences. Co-localisation of QTLs on the same linkage group in different genetic backgrounds was found for the number and percentage of intercalary veins (NV, PV) on linkage group 3 and for NV on linkage group 5, revealing a high congruence in the relative QTL positions. The generally low correspondence of the other QTLs in the different mapping pedigrees may be an effect of the genetic background and of the environment. In conclusion, leaf morphological characters were found to be under polygenic control, and a comparison to earlier published results led to the identification of two QTLs that were stable across different genetic backgrounds.  相似文献

 Sodium salt sensitivity of common oak (Quercus robur L.) was evaluated in hydroponic culture using INRA-Morizet solution. Addition of NaCl to the nutrient solution reduced only length and weight of roots and first flush stems. In contrast, the second flush was properly expanded even in the presence of 40 mM of NaCl in culture medium. Both leaf number and leaf area were not affected by increasing salt concentration in medium culture while this increase induced significant leaf damage especially in first flush leaves. Stem starch storage was reduced only at 40 mM NaCl treatment. Common oak seedlings seemed to be able to better compartmentalize sodium than chloride when the NaCl concentration increased in the medium culture. Chloride presented a lower uptake than sodium. Sodium was preferentially accumulated in roots and this accumulation occurred at the expense of potassium uptake. The decrease of ATP content in leaves of common oak seedlings submitted to NaCl treatments could indicate that it was used for sodium exclusion out of the leaves, especially in second flush leaves.
