The first-formed flower primordium on determinate varieties(plants with terminal inflorescences) of Phaseolus vulgarishas been identified and located. This study was initiated to characterize Rhizobium isolates obtained from root nodules of ineffectively nodulated, field-grown alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants. The purpose was to determine if these isolates possessed characteristics which would explain either their ineffectiveness in N(2) fixation or their apparent ability to tolerate the moderately acid soil conditions from which they originated. Isolates were characterized by analysis of growth rate, 39 degrees C tolerance, acid production on conventional media, and symbiotic performance. All isolates were ineffective in N(2) fixation on alfalfa, and they contained one or more anomalous characteristics. These included either slow growth rate, lack of 39 degrees C tolerance, or lack of acid production on conventional media. Infectiveness tests on a broad range of legumes revealed that the isolates formed root nodules on M. sativa, Medicago lupulina L., and Phaseolus vulgaris (L.) Savi. (common bean). These results provide evidence that, in some situations, ineffective nodulation of M. sativa in the field may be due to the presence of promiscuous, native Rhizobium species.  相似文献

This paper continues to explore niche differentiation in Gammarus pulex and Asellus aquaticus by analysis of their food preferences. Individuals from both species discriminated between leaf discs colonized by different fungal species and exhibited strong preferences for Anguillospora longissima and Heliscus lugdunensis. Fungal preferences were not correlated with the relative abundance of fungi in the field and there was considerable intra-population variability in food preferences — both between individuals and for the same individual through time. Niche overlap between animals from all four study populations was high and there was no evidence of differences in the potential trophic niches of animals from sympatric and allopatric populations.  相似文献

T he earliest appearance of the Hoopoe in history is a painting of the bird perching with other species on the št -bush ( Acacia nilotica Del.). This painting is on the walls of the tomb of Knumhotpe at Beni Hasan, Egypt, and dates from the XIIth Dynasty ( circa 1900 B.C.). A fine coloured drawing of this bird by Howard Carter has been published by the Egypt Exploration Society1. The Egyptian artist has rendered his subject well: it is fairly true to nature except that the tail is represented as forking. I have searched in vain for further pictures of this striking bird in other Egyptian paintings, and the supposed mention of it in a papyrus of the reign of Sety II ( c. 1205 B.C.) cannot be maintained. In this document the writer complains that his dates will not ripen, for they are attacked by three species of birds, in the morning, at noon and at eventide respectively. The late Sir Gaston Maspero identified the first of these birds with the Hoopoe, but as the bird is not frugivorous his identification cannot stand1.  相似文献

Measurements were made, for several seasons, both of the growth rate and biomass production of stands ofBolboschoenus maritimus, the seasonal development of the vertical stand structure together with parallel measurements of microclimatological data including incoming global radiation. Water and bottom soil chemical analyses in relation to the nutrient content in the biomass were compared. The ecological adaptation of the acidophilic subspeciesB. m. ssp.maritimus, growing in south-Bohemian oligotrophic fishpond waters with that of the halophilic ssp.compactus was studied in experimental hydroponic cultures and the results discussed with the findings of other authors from different European habitats. This study has demonstrated that in the ameba, Pelomyxa carolinensis Wilson (Chaos chaos L.) the limiting membranes of mitochondria and postdivision nuclei are often continuous. The morphological relationship may be functional in that it permits an exchange of material resulting directly or indirectly in an increased enzyme content of the mitochondria. It is suggested that through a series of progressive foldings of its envelope, the nucleus may be a site of formation of mitochondria.  相似文献

The digestive tracts of adult and juvenile Dover sole were examined for protease activities. A pepsin-like protease with an optimal pH value of 1.7 predominated in the stomach region, but the main endoprotease action in the foregut, midgut and hindgut regions was optimal in the range of pH 9.5-10.5 and showed good activity towards elastin orcein. Experiments using synthetic substrates suggested the presence of chymotrypsin- and trypsin-like activities optimal between pH 7 and 8. Collagenase activity was also shown to exist in this pH region. The presence of enzymes corresponding to carboxypeptidases a and b and leucine aminopeptidase was indicated. The possible significance of these results to the farming of Dover sole is discussed.  相似文献
