Pond smelt,Hypomesus nipponensis McAllister, in Lake Ogawara demonstrate alternative life history strategies, as evidenced by the coexistence of anadromous and resident fish. However, it is unknown if anadromous and resident groups interbreed. In this study, maturation and spawning processes were examined and compared between anadromous and resident groups. Histological observations indicated negligible variation in the maturational stage composition of oocytes, the frequency of oocyte diameter being unimodal for all specimens at different maturational stages. Oocytes were absent in the ovaries of spent fish. Accordingly, the species can be considered a semelparous spawner with unimodal oocyte diameter distribution. Temporal changes in the proportion of spent fish were compared between anadromous and resident groups. Spawning of both groups began in late March and peaked over April 8–12. Although both groups did not differ significantly in the period of peak spawning, anadromous fish finished spawning earlier than resident ones. Anadromous fish were not able to spawn upon migration into Lake Ogawara, and quickly matured after immigration, contrasting with resident fish.  相似文献

The life histories of the pond smelt Hypomesus nipponensis collected from Japanese fresh waters and brackish (sea) waters were studied by examining the strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in their otoliths. The Sr:Ca ratios in the otoliths changed with the salinity of the habitat. The pond smelt living in a freshwater environment showed consistently low Sr:Ca ratios throughout the otolith, averaging 1·2–1·3 × 10−3. These samples were identified as a standard freshwater type. In contrast, fish collected from the intertidal zone showed higher otolith Sr:Ca ratios than those in the standard freshwater type, and the ratios fluctuated along the growth phase. In addition to the two representative life‐history types of H. nipponensis , i. e . freshwater and anadromous life‐history types, other pond smelts were found to have an estuarine resident life history‐type with no freshwater phase, indicating that the pond smelt has a flexible migration strategy with a high degree of behavioural plasticity and an ability to utilize the full range of salinity in its life history.  相似文献

To aid the interpretation of otolith microstructure in wild fishes, the present study assessed responses in daily otolith increment widths of early juvenile Australian smelt Retropinna semoni to sudden changes in feeding conditions. There was an almost immediate response in otolith increment widths (which can be interpreted as growth in length) to sudden changes in feeding conditions, with such changes being detected statistically after c. 4 days. Fish displayed compensatory growth when food supplies were increased following a period of limited food, indicating the magnitude of the response in growth appears highly dependant on feeding history. Additionally, fish size also appeared to influence increment widths suggesting that both fish size and feeding history are important factors that must be considered when interpreting otolith microstructure for the species.  相似文献

The common smelt is one of the most widespread indigenous freshwater fishes in New Zealand. One other member of the family Retropinnidae, Stokellia anisodon (Stokell), is present but is confined to a small region of the South Island. There are many diadromous as well as river and lake resident populations, the latter, sometimes a result of introductions to serve as forage fish for trout. Diadromous smelt spawn during austral autumn–winter on sand bars of lower riverine reaches. Larval stages inhabit coastal marine waters, and the postlarvae to immature stages re‐enter rivers and some lowland lakes. Diadromous smelt are distinguished from lowland lake resident forms by high vertebral but low gill raker numbers and larger size and from those present in some isolated waters, by high vertebral numbers alone. Lake or reservoir resident smelt usually spawn in austral spring–summer on sandy shallows at stream mouths or along shorelines. Verified smelt ages (otolith analyses) indicate that in some populations most smelt mature and spawn after c. 1 year. Adult smelt feed on a spectrum of primarily invertebrate animals ranging from small zooplankters to insects and occasionally small fishes. Smelt are a major prey for both brown trout and rainbow trout. Adult smelt are a minor food for the Maori people. As postlarvae they are a component of a few 'whitebait' fisheries. Most smelt populations are increasingly affected by environmental changes induced by human activities. Although many studies have examined problems affecting smelt, further effort is required, along with more basic research.  相似文献

Synopsis Two morphological types of the trachurus form (completely plated morph) of three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, are found in Lake Harutori, Kushiro, east district of Hokkaido Island. For convenience, the two forms are referred to as ‘large type’ and ‘small type’ on the basis of body length (discrimination at 70 mm in length). The two types were examined for morphometric, meristic and reproductive characteristics. They differ in body length, the number of lateral plates, means of the 2nd dorsal spine length/body length and of the pelvic spine length/body length, the relationship between body length and head length, between body length and gonad weight, between body weight and gonad weight, and between body length and ovarian egg number; significant differences were present for each sex. These two types were compared with the anadromous stickleback migrating into the freshwater area near Lake Harutori to breed. The anadromous fish was morphologically much more similar to the large type than the small type. It is suggested that the large type is also an anadromous form and the small type is the permanent freshwater resident.  相似文献

Anadromous and resident forms of pond smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis, were found to occur in sympatry in Lake Ogawara, Japan. Profiles of Sr: Ca ratios from individuals could be grouped to two patterns (1) a resident pattern with low Sr: Ca ratios from core to edge and (2) an anadromous pattern with relatively low Sr: Ca ratios near the core with abrupt increases in ratios at a location approximately 0.3mm from the core. Spawners smaller than 60mm standard length (SL) were resident, between 60 to 80mm were mixed resident and anadromous, and larger than 80mm were anadromous. Anadromous individuals first migrated after 40 to 82 days from hatching (mean±sd, 59.1±13.5d) and 14.6 to 30.9mm SL (22.2±5.3mm). There was no difference in SL between resident and anadromous individuals during age at first migration, suggesting that size may not be the mechanism for divergence of alternative life history styles.  相似文献

Larvae of anadromous rainbow smelt originating in various spawning tributaries are retained in the St Lawrence estuary. We proposed that these smelt represent one population genetically differentiated from adjacent populations characterized by geographically distinct larval retention areas. We also analysed four landlocked populations to evaluate the phylogenetic basis of dwarf and normal-sized phenotypes and their relation to an adromous smelt. A phylogenetic distinction was revealed between anadromous and landlocked smelt, with only one of the two mtDNA phylogenetic groups of anadromous fish observed among landlocked smelt. Significant geographical heterogeneity in the distribution of mtDNA genotypes was observed among landlocked smelt, suggesting that dwarfism in smelt may be polyphyletic in origin. St Lawrence smelt were genetically identical but distinct from adjacent populations, supporting the proposition that population genetic structure reflects the number of larval retention zones rather than spawning sites.  相似文献

Otolith growth rates of the early life stages of herring Clupea harengus ( n = 472) and smelt Osmerus eperlanus ( n = 348) collected in the Vistula Lagoon (Baltic Sea) during 1997–1999 were analysed. The larvae and early juveniles were not only collected in the same geographical area they were also of the same size (range 15–43 mm standard length, L S), similar ages and were collected during the same seasons (May to July). Although the two clupeid species experienced very similar environmental conditions, there were significant discrepancies in the analysed relationships. The otolith growth of larval and juvenile smelt was very strongly related to somatic growth while temperature had a minor effect. In herring, the effect of somatic growth, although clearly visible and statistically highly significant, was of less importance than temperature. Furthermore, variation in the otolith size and L S relationship was affected by temperature and somatic growth in both species, but the variance of otolith size at L S was higher for herring than for smelt. Although growth backcalculation from otoliths can presently be recommended as an appropriate method for use with both smelt and herring (despite possibly lower precision and accuracy with the latter), other methods referring directly to short-term increment width changes ( e.g. marginal increment analysis) are recommended for smelt but not for herring.  相似文献

In a mesocosm study, somatic and otolith growth of six types of juvenile cyprinids differing in body size and body shape were studied in a low-intensity wave treatment and a no-wave control. Depending on fish type, somatic growth was either reduced by up to 60% or increased by up to 50% following exposure to the wave treatment. Somatic growth and otolith daily increment width (ODIW), the latter being used as a proxy for the fish energy turnover, were compared to reveal the effects of waves on the energy budget of the fish. Three different reaction types to waves, which correlated to the body morphology of the six fish groups, could be distinguished. Small and fusiform fish benefitted from low-intensity waves and showed higher somatic growth rates and greater ODIW in the wave treatment. In small, deep-bodied fish, growth and ODIW were reduced by waves. Finally, in larger fish with either a fusiform or deep-bodied shape, ODIW was decoupled from somatic growth, with larger ODIW in waves, but reduced somatic growth. These results show that low-intensity hydrodynamic stress is a much more important and complex habitat factor than previously assumed. It is concluded that hydrodynamic stress by waves should be accounted for in bioenergetic models and studies on habitat choice in littoral fish species.  相似文献

Daily increment validation in fish otolith is fundamental to studies on fish otolith microstructure, age determination and life history traits, and thus is critical for species conservation and fishery management. However, it has never been done for Schizothoracine fish, which is the dominant component of fish fauna in the Tibetan Plateau. This study validated the daily increment formation of Gymnocypris selincuoensis, as a representative of Schizothoracine fish, by monitoring the growth of hatchery‐reared larvae group and wild‐caught post‐yolk‐sac larvae group under controlled experiments. The results from monitoring the hatchery‐reared larvae group showed that sagittae and lapilli were found in yolk‐sac larvae, and formed 5–7 days before hatching, but asterisci were not found until 11 days post‐hatching. The first increment in sagittae and lapilli was formed in the first day after hatching. The daily periodicity of increment formation was examined and confirmed in sagittae and lapilli of both larvae groups. However, sagittae were better for age determination than lapilli for larvae at earlier days. For larval G. selincuoensis older than 50 days, lapilli were the only otolith pair suitable for larvae daily age determination. This study validated the daily increment formation in Schizothoracine fish for the first time has primary implications to other fishes from this subfamily.  相似文献

The population of pond smelt Hypomesus olidus has been registered for the first time in the water bodies of Bering Island (Commander Islands). The spawning of this species has been observed in the Sarannoe Lake system, and the maturing breeders have been caught in the freshwater-brackish Gavanskoe Lake system. The spawning grounds, the spawning period, the environment, and the morphology of the breeders have been described. The ratio of Ca and Sr isotopes in the otoliths of the pond smelt inhabiting the Sarannoe Lake system evidenced that this species here was presented by the resident ecotype. The problem of the smelt phylogeny and resettlement in the northern Pacific Ocean is discussed.  相似文献

For otolith increments to provide useful estimates of fish growth, otolith growth must covary closely with somatic growth. We reared groups of juvenile chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha Walbaum) for 70 days, changing ration or temperature during a 20-day treatment period. Restricted rations halted somatic growth, however increment widths decreased gradually; somatic growth was overestimated from increment width. Otolith growth followed changes in water temperature more closely than changes in ration, supporting a hypothesized effect of metabolic rate on otolith growth. Increment growth was only loosely coupled to fish growth rate, and may also be affected by past growth histories. For juvenile fish, increment widths may not be sensitive indicators of short-term changes in growing conditions.  相似文献

Within the populations of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in Storvatn and Rungavatn, Norway, fish that attained the largest size in the late parr stage migrated as 4+ smolts, fish that attained a medium size became 5+ smolts, and the smallest parr became lake residents. Within the last 2 years of the parr stage, those that became anadromous had a lower growth rate during the winter and early summer than those that became resident, and vice versa in late summer. Thus, anadromous fish grew faster in the parr stage, but in years prior to migration, their growth pattern seemed to differ from that of parr that became resident. Due to early size differences between parr that became anadromous or resident, it is suggested that some of the basis for the decision to smoltify or not in charr depends on the growth rate through the whole parr stage, but with significant modification by the local environment. Rungavatn parr had a significantly higher population density (5 ×), higher lipid content and mortality, an earlier maturation, a lower rate of growth, and only one-third the degree of anadromy than those from Storvatn. It is suggested that the two charr populations have evolved different life-history adaptations due to unequal growth, energy allocation and competition opportunities in the lakes.  相似文献

This is the first age determination study for Cynoscion albus , a large tropical sciaenid, using otolith morphology and daily increment analysis. The practicality of both methods for age determination is illustrated by their consistent estimates of age and von Bertalanffy growth parameters. The daily increment analysis was used to validate the surface readings. An alternative, otolith morphometrics, is shown to hold promise for rapid prediction of fish age. Two multivariate linear regression models using gross otolith dimensions can estimate the age of C. albus to within 1 year. Growth parameter estimates are: from surface readings: L =127.5cm with K =0.12; from daily increment readings: L = 122.1 cm with K =0.17. Implications for the stock assessment of tropical fish using size instead of age are discussed.  相似文献

Tetracycline was used as a chemical tag in a mark‐recapture study to examine the pattern of increment formation in the otoliths of Tropheus moorii , a rock‐dwelling cichlid from Lake Tanganyika. A total of 256 fish were captured by divers and injected with tetracycline. Of these, nine were recaptured after either 1 or 2 years at liberty and eight retained tags within their otoliths. Comparison of the number of growth increments formed after the tag and the time at liberty demonstrated that increments were deposited on an annual basis in the otoliths of this species. Furthermore, there was a strong relationship between otolith mass and age suggesting that otoliths grew at a predictable rate throughout the life of the fish. Validation of an annual pattern of increment deposition allowed age and growth information to be derived from otoliths. This showed that T. moorii grew rapidly to attain adult size by 3 years of age. Males grew faster than females and also attained a larger size than females (8·74 v . 7·91 cm L S respectively). The longevity of some of these small freshwater fish was surprising; the oldest individual had an age of 10 years, while the average age of adults was 4 years.  相似文献

In 1926 cannery workers from the Wakefield Fisheries Plant at Little Port Walter in Southeast Alaska captured small trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, from a portion of Sashin Creek populated with a wild steelhead (anadromous O. mykiss) run. They planted them into Sashin Lake which had been fishless to that time and separated from the lower stream by two large waterfalls that prevented upstream migration of any fish. In 1996 we sampled adult steelhead from the lower creek and juvenile O. mykiss from an intermediate portion of the creek, Sashin Lake, and five lakes that had been stocked with fish from Sashin Lake in 1938. Tissue samples from these eight populations were compared for variation in: microsatellite DNA at 10 loci; D-loop sequences in mitochondrial DNA; and allozymes at 73 loci known to be variable in steelhead. Genetic variability was consistently less in the Sashin Lake population and all derived populations than in the source anadromous population. The cause of this reduction is unknown but it is likely that very few fish survived to reproduce from the initial transplant in 1926. Stockings of 50–85 fish into five other fishless lakes in 1938 from Sashin Lake did not result in a similar dramatic reduction in variability. We discuss potential explanations for the observed patterns of genetic diversity in relation to the maintenance of endangered anadromous O. mykiss populations in freshwater refugia.

The purpose of this work was to examine the effect of reduced feeding and constant temperature on cod otolith opacity. Three groups of juvenile cod were given restricted food rations at different times for 4 months, resulting in depressed somatic growth. Otolith opacity was measured on pictures of the otolith sections. The otolith carbonate deposited during the experimental period was generally opaque compared to the more translucent otolith material deposited prior to and after the experimental period, when the fish were kept in a pond and in sea‐cages at higher temperatures. Large variations in otolith opacity were found between individual fish both within groups and between groups. In two of the three groups significantly more translucent otolith material was deposited in response to reduced feeding. Our results show that variations in feeding and hence fish growth resulted in variation in otolith opacity, but the effect was minor compared to that of variations in ambient temperature. The combined influence of these effects, which both act on fish metabolism, are most likely controlling the seasonal opacity changes observed in wild fish. Our results help explain the variations seen in fish at constant temperatures.  相似文献

Brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) from anadromous River Lierelva, resident Lake Tunhovd, and resident Nordmarka stocks were exposed to Gyrodactylus salaris -infected salmon parr. The brown trout were fed pellets before the experiments, except for one group of the Nordmarka stock which was starved for 19 days before the experiments. The mean number of parasites declined directly and rapidly post infection for all groups of trout. There were no pronounced differences in resistance between the anadromous and the resident stocks. G. salaris infections tended to persist longer on starved than on fed trout of the Nordmarka stock. The maximum parasite persistence on trout was 50 days, and as parasite numbers increased on some fish parasite reproduction must have occurred on those trout. However, the limited susceptibility and marked innate resistance of trout to G. salaris establishment, development and reproduction, suggest parasite metapopulations will not survive on this species. Nevertheless, trout may still play a role in the dispersal of G. salaris within and between rivers.  相似文献

The eyes of 273 Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) taken from Charr Lake, the Ikarut River, and Hebron Fiord in northern Labrador were examined for diplostomula. All anadromous charr taken from the Ikarut river and Hebron Fiord were uninfected. The resident fish from Charr Lake were parasitized with large numbers of diplostomula and intensity of infection increased with age and length. Infections of up to 2,852 diplostomula in one fish are the highest recorded. Such infections did not appear to affect the vision of the charr.  相似文献
