Comparing five species of pipefish, egg size was significantly larger in species with brood pouches (Syngnathus typhle, Syngnathus acus and Syngnathus rostellatus) than in species without brood pouches (Entelurus aequoreus and Nerophis ophidion). Egg size correlated positively with female body size in species with brood pouches, but was similar across female sizes in the species lacking pouches. These results may reflect differences in offspring competition as a consequence of variable offspring relatedness within a brood, due to the mating systems adopted by the different species and the presence or absence of a brood pouch. 相似文献

Relationships between body size and abundance in collections of animals from the tanks of 73 bromeliads belonging to five species were analysed. Unlike data in previously published studies on this relationship, these collections of species are not taxonomically restricted and represent complete communities over the macroscopic range of organisms. There is no overall tendency for there to be a positive or negative relationship between population abundance and body size of morphospecies. We can find no evidence that body size-abundance patterns are triangular in complete communities. However, there is weak evidence that the relationship in the aquatic subsets of those communities may have some underlying triangularity, with medium-sized species having the largest populations. 相似文献

The historical focus on offspring size has been to explain variation among populations, but there have been few attempts to determine whether variation is greatest at population scale. Offspring size variation is typically viewed as an adaptive response to changes in the relationship between offspring size and performance, yet direct tests remain elusive. We partitioned natural variation in offspring size for a marine invertebrate, Watersipora subtorquata, at a range of spatial and temporal scales across southeastern Australia, and we estimated the relationship between offspring size and performance at each population and time. There was significant variation in offspring size among populations, but regional differences explained only approximately 25% of the observed variation, suggesting that there should be a greater focus on small-scale variation in offspring size. We used our data to parameterize an optimality model to generate predictions of offspring size among different populations and times. Differences in the relationship between offspring size and postmetamorphic performance (and therefore changes in size of offspring that were predicted to maximize maternal fitness) among populations and times were associated with differences in offspring sizes among those populations and times. We suggest that interpopulation variation in offspring size can be an adaptive response to local conditions, but the optimal offspring size is surprisingly dynamic. 相似文献

The present study compared the regression equations of bioelectrical impedance on body size among various groups to investigate potential differences due to ethnicity. Data consisted of 30 Japanese and 28 Caucasoid subjects, and other groups of Aborigines, Danes, Melanesians and Polynesians from literature. The relationship between impedance and body weight fot the groups showed the ethnic difference. In the regression equations for Japanese and Caucasoid, a statistically significant difference was observed between both groups. The regression equation for Japanese was lower in the elevation. This seemed to be attributable to differences in the volume of fat-free mass for the same body build, configuration of the body, and fat-free mass density. 相似文献

The feeding niche and the body size of any species are fundamental parameters that constrain the evolution of many other phenotypic
characters. Moreover, previous work has shown that body size and diet are correlated, as a consequence of the negative allometry
of metabolic rate. Unfortunately, the precise form of the association between body size and diet has never been specified,
principally because no suitable cross-species measure of diet has been advanced. Here we develop a measure of diet that is
sensitive over the whole spectrum of primate feeding niches, and use this measure to define the relationship between body
size and diet for a sample of 72 primate species. Subsequently, we present several examples of how behavioral and ecological
hypotheses can be tested by examining the extent to which particular species deviate from the general diet-body size pattern. 相似文献

On average, large-bodied species live at lower densities than small-bodied ones. Early studies suggested that population densities might scale so that the energy use of a population is independent of body size. However, recent work shows that, at the scale of local communities, this is rarely true and that the pattern varies among taxonomic or ecological subsets of those communities. Energetic considerations may only be relevant to the densities of more abundant species. In fact, within natural assemblages o f organisms, the underlying relationship is very variable; in subsets of those assemblages, ecological processes such as competition may structure abundance patterns. 相似文献

Countershading is a gradient of colouration in which the illuminated dorsal surfaces are darker than the unilluminated ventral surface. It is widespread in the animal kingdom and endows the body with a more uniform colour to decrease the chance of detection by predators. Although recent empirical studies support the theory of survival advantage conferred by countershading, this camouflage strategy has evolved only in some of the cryptic animals, and our understanding of the factors that affect the evolution of countershading is limited. This study examined the association between body size and countershading using lepidopteran larvae (caterpillars) as a model system. Specifically, we predicted that countershading may have selectively evolved in large-sized species among cryptic caterpillars if (1) large size constrains camouflage which facilitates the evolution of a trait reinforcing their crypsis and (2) the survival advantage of countershading is size-dependent. Phylogenetic analyses of four different lepidopteran families (Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Erebidae, and Geometridae) suggest equivocal results: countershading was more likely to be found in larger species in Saturniidae but not in the other families. The field predation experiment assuming avian predators did not support size-dependent predation in countershaded prey. Collectively, we found only weak evidence that body size is associated with countershading in caterpillars. Our results suggest that body size is not a universal factor that has shaped the interspecific variation in countershading observed in caterpillars. 相似文献

Parrotfishes are a group of herbivores that play an important functional role in structuring benthic communities on coral
reefs. Increasingly, these fish are being targeted by fishermen, and resultant declines in biomass and abundance may have
severe consequences for the dynamics and regeneration of coral reefs. However, the impact of overfishing extends beyond declining
fish stocks. It can also lead to demographic changes within species populations where mean body size is reduced. The effect
of reduced mean body size on population dynamics is well described in literature but virtually no information exists on how
this may influence important ecological functions. The study investigated how one important function, scraping (i.e., the
capacity to remove algae and open up bare substratum for coral larval settlement), by three common species of parrotfishes
(Scarus niger, Chlorurus sordidus, and Chlorurus strongylocephalus) on coral reefs at Zanzibar (Tanzania) was influenced by the size of individual fishes. There was a non-linear relationship
between body size and scraping function for all species examined, and impact through scraping was also found to increase markedly
when fish reached a size of 15–20 cm. Thus, coral reefs which have a high abundance and biomass of parrotfish may nonetheless
be functionally impaired if dominated by small-sized individuals. Reductions in mean body size within parrotfish populations
could, therefore, have functional impacts on coral reefs that previously have been overlooked. 相似文献

Freshwater cyclopoid copepods exhibit at least a fivefold range in somatic genome size and a mechanism, chromatin diminution, which could account for much of this interspecific variation. These attributes suggest that copepods are well suited to studies of genome size evolution. We tested the nucleotypic hypothesis of genome size evolution, which poses that variation in genome size is adaptive due to the bulk effects of both coding and noncoding DNA on cell size and division rates, and their correlates.
We found a significant inverse correlation between genome size and developmental (growth) rate in five freshwater cyclopoid species at three temperatures. That is, species with smaller genomes developed faster. Species with smaller genomes had significantly smaller bodies at 22 °C, but not at cooler and warmer temperatures. Species with smaller genomes developed faster at all three temperatures, but had smaller bodies only at 22 °C. We propose a model of life history evolution that adds genome size and cell cycle dynamics to the suite of characters on which selection may act to mold life histories and to influence the distribution of traits among different habitats. 相似文献

There is a lack of standardized methodology for normalizing various indices of muscle strength and movement performance tests for differences in body size in human movement-related disciplines. Most of the data presented in the literature have been body size dependent, which precludes both comparisons between subjects and establishment of standards for specific subject populations. The goal of the present review was to propose standardized tests that normalize physical performance tests to body size. Specifically, we propose (a) using an allometric normalization based on theoretical models that presume geometric similarity, (b) using classification of performance tests based on particular values of the allometric parameters required for normalization, and (c) using a simple "performance index" that represents an individual or group performance relative to a reference population. Correspondences between theory and experimental findings and limitations are discussed. 相似文献

Human male height is one of the most conspicuous sexually dimorphic, phenotypic characteristics that affect how men are perceived both by men and women, impacting mate selection and intra-sexual competition. Testosterone is a key hormone linked to morphological masculinity and advantage in intra-sexual competition. To date, there have been limited studies linking height with testosterone levels. Here, we examined the change in circulating testosterone levels after physical exercise in 97 healthy and physically active men. Our results show that there was a significant relationship between male stature and the change in testosterone levels, whereas there was no such link between body height and circulating testosterone levels. Therefore, our findings provide evidence that height may indicate male’s adaptive capabilities to physiologically mobilize their bodies when it is needed and/or beneficial. 相似文献

Aquatic animals generate electrical field potentials which may be monitored by predators or conspecifics. Many crustaceans use rapid, forceful contractions of the flexor and extensor muscles to curl and extend their abdomens during swimming in escape and locomotion. When crayfish swim they generate electrical field potentials that can be recorded by electrodes nearby in the water. In general, it is reasonable to assume that larger bodied crayfish will generate signals of greater amplitude because they have larger muscles. It is not known, however, how activity in particular muscles and nerves combines to produce the compound electrical waveform recorded during swimming. We therefore investigated the relationship between abdominal muscle, body size and the amplitude of nearby tailflip potentials in the freshwater crayfish (Cherax destructor). We found that amplitude was correlated positively with abdominal muscle mass. The mean amplitude recorded from the five smallest and five largest individuals differed by 440 microV, a difference sufficiently large to be of significance to predators and co-inhabitants in the wild. 相似文献

Influence of adult nutrition on the relationship between body size and reproductive parameters in a parasitoid wasp 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract. 1. An important constraint upon life-history evolution in parasitoids is the limit imposed by body size on allocation of limited metabolic resources to different fitness-related physiological functions such as reproduction and survival.
2. The influence of adult nutrition on reproductive and maintenance variables was studied in the synovigenic ectoparasitoid Mastrus ridibundus , and it was determined whether resource allocation to these different functions depends on body size.
3. Over the course of adult life there was a positive relationship between body size and the number of mature eggs in adult females both in the presence and absence of food. However, only in the presence of food did egg maturation rates increase significantly with body size. Starved wasps produced significantly smaller eggs than fed ones, which has not been documented before. Moreover, starved wasps produced fewer offspring than fed wasps, and attacked fewer hosts.
4. The availability of food had a major effect on longevity, with fed females living about 10 times longer than starved ones. There was also a positive relationship between body size and longevity. In starved wasps, this relationship was the same both in the presence and absence of hosts, but in fed wasps there was a positive relationship between body size and longevity in the absence of hosts only. Allocation to initial eggs relative to lifetime progeny production did not decline with body size.
5. The data reveal that in M. ridibundus the trade-off between maintenance and reproduction varies with life expectancy. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the body composition, body size, muscle strength, and VO2max after 24 weeks of resistance or endurance training and detraining in young men. Thirty healthy college-aged men (20.4 ± 1.36 years) participated in the study. Subjects were assigned to resistance training group (RTG, n = 10), endurance training group (ETG, n = 10), and control group (CG, n = 10). The training program consisted of running or weight-resistance exercise for 3 sessions per week under supervision. VO2max, upper and lower body strength (UBS, LBS), body fat, lean body mass, and body circumference were measured at baseline and after training and detraining. After the training period, the exercise groups demonstrated significant increases in VO2max and LBS (p < 0.05). The UBS, lean mass (LM), and body size of arm and calf were significantly greater in the RTG than in the other 2 groups (p<0.05). In addition, the strength and LM of the RTG were still greater than the baseline values after 24 weeks of detraining (p < 0.05). The conclusions of this study are (a) that endurance or resistance training alone led to training-specific improvements in physical performance, body composition, and body size of the arms for the young men examined and (b) that the RTG maintained the gains in strength and LM for more prolonged periods after training ceased than the endurance training group. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine 1) if lifting performance in both the weightlifting (WL) and powerlifting (PL) scale with body mass (M) in line with theory of geometric similarity, and 2) whether there are any gender differences in the allometric relationship between lifting performance and body size. This was performed by analyzing ten best WL and PL total results for each weight class, except for super heavyweight, achieved during 2000-2003. Data were analysed with the allometric and second-order polynomial model, and detailed regression diagnostics was applied in order to examine appropriateness of the models used. Results of the data analyses indicate that 1) women's WL and men's PL scale for M in line with theory of geometric similarity, 2) both WL and PL mass exponents are gender-specific, probably due to gender differences in body composition, 3) WL and PL results scale differently for M possibly due to their structural and functional differences. However, the obtained mass exponents does not provide size-independent indices of lifting performances since the allometric model exhibit a favourable bias toward middleweight lifters in most lifting data analyzed. Due to possible deviations from presumption of geometric similarity among lifters, future studies on scaling lifting performance should use fat-free mass and height as indices of body size. 相似文献

The relationship between ecological segregation and sexual body size dimorphism in large herbivores 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A. Mysterud 《Oecologia》2000,124(1):40-54
Ecological segregation (sexual differences in diet or habitat use) in large herbivores has been intimately linked to sexual
body size dimorphism, and may affect both performance and survival of the sexes. However, no one has tested comparatively
whether segregation occurs at a higher frequency among more dimorphic species. To test this comparatively, data on sex-specific
diet, habitat use and body size of 40 species of large herbivores were extracted from the literature. The frequency of ecological
segregation was higher among more dimorphic herbivores; however, this was only significant for browsers. This provides the
first evidence that segregation is more common among more dimorphic species. The comparative evidence supported the nutritional-needs
hypothesis over the incisor breadth hypothesis, as there was no difference in frequency of segregation between seasons with
high and low resource levels, and since segregation was also evident among browsers. Whether the absence of a correlation
between ecological segregation and level of sexual body size dimorphism for intermediate feeders and grazers is due to biological
differences relative to browsers or to the fact that the monomorphic species included in the analysis were all browsers is
discussed.

Compared to the general population, Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have a higher risk of hip fracture and secondary osteoporosis. In the general population, it is known that physical performance is related to bone density. However, the relationship between bone density and physical performance in ambulatory PD patients has not been studied. This study investigated the relationship between bone density and physical performance in ambulatory PD patients. Fourteen ambulatory PD patients (9 men and 5 women; mean age, 67.3+/-7.7 years; Hoehn & Yahr stages 1-3) were enrolled. Bone density of the right calcaneus was assessed using a speed of sound (SOS) ultrasound measurement device. Disease severity was categorized using the Japanese Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Furthermore, to assess physical performance, lower extremity strength, 10 m gait time, and body sway were measured. Since SOS is strongly affected by age and gender, it was standardized by the patient's age and gender, and the t-score was calculated with the use of SOS. Significant correlations were found between the t-score and UPDRS,lower extremity strength, and 10 m gait time. When the 4 parts of the UPDRS were analyzed separately, only the correlation between part IV and the t-score was not significant. The findings of this study suggest that higher disease severity and weaker lower extremity physical performance decreased bone density in ambulatory PD patients. Therefore, in order to prevent hip fractures in ambulatory PD patients, assessing the UPDRS and lower extremity physical performance may be clinically useful. 相似文献

Studying food partitioning of mammalian predators is important for understanding trophic structures and interactions between coexisting carnivore species. This is particularly pertinent in the light of expanding ranges of populations of generalist species whose habitat and diet overlap with more specialized species. Here, we tested the resource partitioning hypothesis in terrestrial carnivores, predicting that trophic niche breadth and overlap relate positively to body mass. We used dietary data from 18 terrestrial carnivore taxa in four families (Canidae, Mustelidae, Felidae and Ursidae; body mass 0.1–173.6 kg) in three regions in Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. deciduous forest and forest-steppe region (DFR), temperate deciduous and mixed forest region (MFR) and transitory mixed forest regions (TFR). We ranked carnivores along an axis of trophic niche (breadth and overlap), and analysed the relationship between trophic niche and body mass (or pair-wise difference in body mass). A hierarchical cluster analysis of diet composition divided carnivores into four ecological groups: wild ungulate predators; small-mammal predators; amphibians and small mammal predators and omnivores. The relationship between body mass of predators and both trophic niche breadth and trophic niche overlap were hump-shaped. The trophic niche breadth to body mass ratio was significantly lower in DFR than in TFR and trophic niche overlap was significantly higher in DFR than in MFR and TFR. The predominant food resource is small mammals whose abundance is related to local agricultural and forestry management practices. Modifications of management techniques can affect population dynamics and community composition of carnivore species, especially in the case of small-mammal predators. 相似文献

This study aimed to establish an allometric scaling relationship between the frequency of intestinal contractions and body mass of different mammalian species. The frequency of intestinal contractions of rabbit, guinea pig, rat and mouse were measured using an isolated organ system. The isolated rings were prepared from proximal segments of jejunums and the frequency of contractions was recorded by an isometric force procedure. The coefficients of the obtained allometric equation were ascertained by computation of least squares after logarithmic transformation of both body mass and frequency. Significant differences (p?<?0.001) were shown in the frequency of contractions between different species. The highest frequency that corresponded to the mice was 57.7 min?1 and the 95% confidence interval (CI) ranged from 45.4 to 70, while rabbits showed the lowest frequency (12.71 min?1, CI: 8.6–16.8). Logarithms of frequency were statistically proportional to logarithms of body mass (r?=?0.99; p?<?0.001). The data fitted an equation $ \mathrm{F}=18.51{{\mathrm{B}}^{-0.31 }} $ and the 95% confidence interval of the exponent ranged from ?0.30 to ?0.32. The results of this study suggest that it is probably possible to extrapolate the intestinal contraction frequency of other mammalian species by the means of allometry scaling. 相似文献
