The family Hymenophyllaceae is represented in the study area by six species in two genera, Hymenophyllum J. E. Smith and Trichomanes L. The study was based on herbarium material and spores were studied under light microscope (LM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Both genera have trilete spores, 23 to 45 μm in equatorial diameter, with an ornamentation of echinulae and cones in Hymenophyllum and of verrucae, gemmae and granules in Trichomanes. Mature spores have a sporoderm composed of a perispore, an exospore and a fibrillar endospore; the exospore is 0.5 to 2.5 μm thick, compact and with an irregular margin. In some cases radial channels and other channels associated with the middle and inner parts of the laesurae were evident. A series of cavities filled with an opaque content line the inner margin of the exospore. The perispore is 20 to 400 nm thick and unevenly differentiated along the surface of a same spore. Under TEM, two main differentially contrasted portions could be distinguished: a dark massive portion with structural components could not be distinguished, and a light portion with several plates arranged in piles. The inner surface of the perispore exhibit short scales. Globules are immersed within the perispore at some depth from the perispore surface and others connected to it by structural threads. The spore characters observed including shape, ornamentation, laesurae length and wall structure are useful in distinguishing the two genera studied, but less useful in differentiation at the species level.  相似文献

Carrasco, P.A., Mattoni, C.I., Leynaud, G.C. & Scrocchi, G.J. (2012). Morphology, phylogeny and taxonomy of South American bothropoid pitvipers (Serpentes, Viperidae). —Zoologica Scripta, 41, 109–124. South American bothropoids comprise a monophyletic and greatly diverse group of pitvipers that were initially included in the genus Bothrops and later assigned to five genera. Until recently, most phylogenetic analyses of bothropoids used exclusively mitochondrial DNA sequences, whereas few of them have included morphological traits. Moreover, the systematic affinities of some species remain unclear. In this study, we performed a parsimony analysis of morphological data obtained from the examination of 111 characters related to lepidosis, colour pattern, osteology, and hemipenial morphology of 35 of the 48 species that compose the bothropoid group. The morphological data analysed contain novel information about several species, including the incertae sedis. Morphology was analysed separately and combined with 2393 molecular characters obtained from published sequences of four mitochondrial genes. Five characters of the ecology were also included. A sensitivity analysis was performed using different weighting criteria for the characters. The congruence among different sources of evidence was evaluated through partitioned and total evidence analyses, the analyses of reduced datasets and the use of incongruence length difference test. With few exceptions, results showed groups of species similar to those obtained in previous studies; however, incongruences between morphological and molecular characters, and within the molecular partition, were revealed. This conflict affects the relationship between particular groups of species, leading to alternative phylogenetic hypotheses for bothropoids: hierarchical radiation or two major lineages within the group. The results also showed that Bothrops sensu stricto is paraphyletic. We discuss previous taxonomic approaches and, considering both phylogenetic hypotheses, we propose an arrangement that rectifies the paraphyly of Bothrops: maintaining Bothrocophias, assigning Bothrops andianus to this genus; and recognising the sister clade as Bothrops, synonymising Bothriopsis, Bothropoides and Rhinocerophis.  相似文献

Data on the spermatozoa of Branchiobdellida were taken from the published literature: sperm models of 25 species belonging to 13 different branchiobdellidan genera have been compared with the aim of supplying further evidences for a phylogenetic analysis of the group. The species considered were representative of all traditional branchiobdellidan families, excluding the monotypic Caridinophilidae. Branchiobdellidan spermatozoa are complex cells, thus it was possible to analyse the variation of 20 characters within the group. A parsimony analysis has yielded nine minimal trees, eight of which are very similar to one another. The main conclusions of the phylogenetic analysis are: (a) the monophyly of the taxon Branchiobdellida is confirmed; (b) the most speciose branchiobdellidan genus, Cambarincola is polyphyletic; (c) none of the traditional ‘families’ are supported; (d) the genus Branchiobdella is monophyletic, but the position of one species, B. kobayashi, albeit basal to the whole genus, is not resolved; (e) the other two genera analysed for which more than one species was available, Pterodrilus and Xironogiton, are monophyletic; (f) there seems to be a ‘trend’ in the whole group towards an increase of acrosome length. Our results partly parallel those obtained by Gelder and Siddall (2000) with a combined analysis of molecular and somatic characters, and point to the need for a comprehensive revision of the Branchiobdellida based on a combination of molecular, somatic and spermatological data sets.  相似文献

A study of spores from fertile pinnae of Botryopteris from middle and upper Pennsylvanian coal balls from Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas indicates that there are two distinct species, Botryopteris globosa and B. americana. The organization and attachments of fertile pinnae and the sporangial morphology and dimorphism are identical in the two species. Data are given on fertile pinnae dimensions, attachments of six fertile pinnae, spore counts from individual sporangia, and spore morphology. The ornamentation of B. americana spores is verrucate to rugulate with verrucae fusing to a variable extent to form bars and convolute ridges; B. globosa spores are vermiculate or fossulate to densely rugulate with scattered verrucae. Comparisons are made with B. forensis and a re-interpretation of the spore forms of B. forensis is suggested.  相似文献

Characteristics of the oospores have been used to delimit sections and, in some cases, species in the genus Tolypella A. Braun. To test the utility of oospore characters for identifying North American species of Tolypella, we investigated oospores from field‐collected and herbarium specimens. Oospore dimensions (length, width, and length to width ratio) and morphology (color, ridge number and shape, wall ornamentation, and basal impression number) were measured. Oospore dimensions were statistically analyzed and oospore morphology was studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. Statistical analyses showed significant differences in length, width, and length to width ratios among most Tolypella species and populations but there was considerable overlap, which suggested that species identification based on oospore measurements alone is not wholly reliable. In addition, oospore morphology was not unique for every species.  相似文献

Pseudopimelodidae are Neotropical catfishes characterized by having slightly to strongly depressed body in fully developed specimens. The largest species of the family with 500 mm SL, Lophiosilurus alexandri, experiences impressive changes in body shape during development, becoming extremely depressed when fully developed. Accordingly, Lophiosilurus alexandri is an ideal species to observe the morphological changes during ontogeny, and to seek solid interpretations on the polarity of characters. Specimens of distinct larval periods (yolk sac, flexion and postflexion; n = 186 specimens) and juvenile stages (n = 20) were analyzed. Changes in body shape, position of mouth and eye, morphology of fins and pigmentation were observed during the development of Lophiosilurus. Larvae (5.7–11.2 mm standard length) had pigmentation concentrated on the head and parts of body, eyes small and pigmented, short barbels, and well-developed finfold. Juveniles (15.9–28.1 mm standard length) had body shape similar to adult, with head depressed and bearing bony ridges, large mouth, dorsally-oriented eyes, small barbels and well-developed shoulder bulges (cleithral width). The greatest morphological changes in the development of L. alexandri occurred during the postflexion larval stage. Relative to standard length, measurements of snout length, head depth and body depth are smaller in juveniles than in larvae, but body width is larger. New interpretations on the phylogenetic characters related to these changes are provided in view of the two alternative hypotheses of the evolution of Pseudopimelodidae.  相似文献

Digital image analysis was used to measure dimensions of spores produced by Puccinia coronata, P. graminis, P. hordei, P. recondita, P. striiformis and P. triticina. Included were teliospores, basidiospores, urediniospores and, except for P. striiformis, pycniospores and aeciospores. Length, width and projection area of spores were measured with NIH Image or Scion software. By using limits on size, spores were automatically selected and measured, except for teliospores, which required manual elimination of the pedicel and separation of images of adhering spores. Length and width were determined as the major and minor axes of the best fitting ellipse for each spore. This procedure gave values for length and width close to results obtained with an ocular micrometer. Projection area was determined as the number of pixels within spore boundaries multiplied by the area represented by each pixel, giving values that are not feasible to obtain accurately with an ocular micrometer. Of the species studied, spores of P. recondita had the largest dimensions, P. triticina had the smallest. The rank of the six species based on increasing width, length or projection area was almost the same, using each spore type except pycniospores. Generally, differences of 5% in a given spore dimension between two species were significant. Differences between species were greater with basidiospores and aeciospores than with other spore types. Teliospores were unique in that length and width were negatively correlated, resulting in less variation in area than in length or width. The results indicate that image analysis is useful for measuring spore dimensions, that projection area of spores is a useful added parameter for characterizing rust species and that dimensions of teliospores, basidiospores, aeciospores and urediniospores each are potentially useful for differentiating species.  相似文献

Four new species of Eviota (Teleostei: Gobiidae) are described from French Polynesia. Eviota hinanoae occurs from the Gambier, Austral and Society Archipelagos and differs from its closest relatives primarily in sensory pore pattern, having cuplike male urogenital papilla, and in lacking prominent dark pigmentation on the base of the pectoral fin. Three other new species, E. dorsimaculata, E. lacrimosa and E. deminuta, are known only from the Marquesas Islands and are distinguished from congeners by differences in pigmentation, sensory pore pattern, urogenital papilla shape, the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, and the length of the fifth pelvic-fin ray. Eviota deminuta represents one of the smallest known species of Eviota and features reductions in several morphological characters, including the loss of all head pores. Three of the new species are included in a phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase-I, along with 21 additional species of Eviota.  相似文献

Samples of males of Trichuris ovis (Abildgaard, 1795), T. skrjabini Baskakov, 1924, T. sylvilagi Tiner, 1950, T. suis (Schrank, 1788) and T. trichiura (L., 1771) were compared on the basis of 15 morphometric characters. An analysis of their variability, correlations and a discriminant analysis yielded information on the diagnostic value of these characters and on the best combination of characters necessary for the successful differentiation of the species studied. The morphological similarity of the species studied was also assessed. The length and width of the spicule and body length proved to be the best diagnostic characters for the trichurid males studied. They permitted fairly reliable differentiation of the species T. ovis, T. skrjabini and T. sylvilagi. The species which exhibited the greatest similarity, T. suis and T. trichiura, were frequently misidentified using these features only but could be readily differentiated using seven characters.  相似文献

A new species of cyprinid fish, Mekongina lancangensis, is described from the upper Mekong River drainage in Southern Yunnan, China. The new species is distinguished from the other species of Mekongina occurring in the lower Mekong River drainage by possessing the following combination of characters: one pair of rostral barbels; two rows of tubercles irregularly scattered on the snout and cheeks, with two enlarged tubercles present at each side of anterior of the snout; 19–27 rostral marginal lappets; lateral line with 38–41 scales; 5·5 or 6·5 scales in transverse series from dorsal‐fin origin to lateral line; 18–20 circumpeduncular scales; snout length 31·9–36·9% head length; tip of depressed anal‐fin rays extending to the caudal‐fin base.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of Chalara and allied taxa are studied based on ribosomal DAN sequences. Partial 28S rDNA and 18S rDNA regions from 26 strains were sequenced in this study. These and related sequences from GenBank were analyzed using parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Most of the Chalara species clustered in a strongly supported monophyletic lineage representing Helotiales. However, a few Chalara species appeared closely related to Xylariales. The phylogenetic significance of morphological characters observed in Chalara species are evaluated based on our sequence analyses. Conidial septation, conidial width and conidiophore pigmentation are thought to be indicative in understanding their evolutionary relationships. Sterile setae, which traditionally have been used to delimitate Chaetochalara from Chalara, are phylogenetically insignificant.  相似文献

We sequenced the nuclear small subunit of ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) from seven species within the insect-pathogenic order Entomophthorales. These sequences were aligned with other published SSU rDNA sequences and phylogenies were inferred using phenetic and cladistic methods. Based on three different phylogenetic methods the Entomophthorales (excludingBasidiobolus ranarum) is monophyletic;B. ranarumwas more closely related to chytrids from Chytridiales and Neocallimasticales than to Entomophthorales, as was proposed by Nagahamaet al.(Mycologia87:203–209, 1995). Nuclear characters (large nuclei containing conspicuous condensed chromatin and lack of a prominent nucleolus) were of predictive value for the monophyly of the family Entomophthoraceae. Conidial characters separate the Entomophthoraceae, which only includes obligate pathogens, into at least two lineages: one lineage with uninucleate conidia and another with multinucleate conidia. The two species ofConidiobolusstudied were paraphyletic in our analyses and only distantly related to each other. This information may prove to be important in the use of these fungi as biocontrol agents.

Summary Studies on the size of pycnidia, ostiole, length and width of pycnidiospores and ratio between length and width of pycnidiospores ofM. phaseoli isolates from cotton, castor, sesame and groundnut, the pycnidia of which were obtained by artificial inoculation on the hosts and also in culture medium of one cotton isolate, revealed that all the isolates were true to the type species and that the isolates had significant differences among them for these characters. The measurements of pycnidia and spores were dependant on the substratum for their production, and as such should preferably be made when these structures are obtained on the host of the isolate. Delimitation ofM. phaseoli on basis of these measurements from other hosts of the isolates is considered unwarranted or invalid.  相似文献

Six species of abalones (Haliotidae) are found on the Korean coasts. Identification and characterization of these abalones are usually based on morphologic characters. In this research we compared the partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I genes to identify species using molecular data and to determine their phylogenetic relationships. Sequence alignments and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the 6 species fell into 2 distinct groups which were genetically distant from each other and exhibited little internal phylogenetic resolution. One group included Haliotis discus hannai, H. discus discus, H. madaka, and H. gigantea, while the other group contained H. diversicolor supertexta and H. diversicolor diversicolor. The 16S rRNA sequences were relatively more conserved than to the COI sequences, but both gene sequences provided sufficient phylogenetic information to distinguish among the 6 species of Pacific abalone, and thus could be valuable molecular characters for species identification.  相似文献

In this study, micromorphological features of the leaf epidermal cells of 17 species of Iranian Cotoneaster were determined. The studied species were compared with each other and with phylogenetic relationships established by previous studies. Three populations of C. integerrimus and C. multiflorus were studied as representatives of C. subgen. Cotoneaster and Chaenopetalum, respectively. To evaluate quantitative and qualitative characters, multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and factor analysis of mixed data (FAMD) were performed. Finally, relationships among the taxa were illustrated by hierarchical clustering analysis. Three stomatal types were identified, i.e. anomocytic, stephanocytic and actino‐stephanocytic. The wax and cuticle density was higher in species from semi‐moist habitats than in those from dry and semi‐dry habitats. The patterns formed by the anticlinal walls of the epidermal cells were sinuous, repand and straight‐curved. Interestingly, there was a significant relationship between the length of leaves, the density of the indumentum and the pattern formed by the anticlinal cell walls. The leaves of species with large leaves also have lower hair density and more curved anticlinal cell walls. It appears probable that climatic conditions affected the evolution of leaf micro‐morphological characters during the early diversification of the genus, but that these characters have subsequently been permanently fixed by phylogenetic constraints and thus appear diagnostic for extant species.  相似文献

The intrasubfamilial classification of Microdontinae Rondani (Diptera: Syrphidae) has been a challenge: until recently more than 300 out of more than 400 valid species names were classified in Microdon Meigen. We present phylogenetic analyses of molecular and morphological characters (both separate and combined) of Microdontinae. The morphological dataset contains 174 characters, scored for 189 taxa (9 outgroup), representing all 43 presently recognized genera and several subgenera and species groups. The molecular dataset, representing 90 ingroup species of 28 genera, comprises sequences of five partitions in total from the mitochondrial gene COI and the nuclear ribosomal genes 18S and 28S. We test the sister‐group relationship of Spheginobaccha with the other Microdontinae, attempt to elucidate phylogenetic relationships within the Microdontinae and discuss uncertainties in the classification of Microdontinae. Trees based on molecular characters alone are poorly resolved, but combined data are better resolved. Support for many deeper nodes is low, and placement of such nodes differs between parsimony and Bayesian analyses. However, Spheginobaccha is recovered as highly supported sister group in both. Both analyses agree on the early branching of Mixogaster, Schizoceratomyia, Afromicrodon and Paramicrodon. The taxonomical rank in relation to the other Syrphidae is discussed briefly. An additional analysis based on morphological characters only, including all 189 taxa, used implied weighting. A range of weighting strengths (k‐values) is applied, chosen such that values of character fit of the resulting trees are divided into regular intervals. Results of this analysis are used for discussing the phylogenetic relationships of genera unrepresented in the molecular dataset.  相似文献

Abstract A new species of the genus Linshcosteus Distant, 1904 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) is described from specimens collected near Kalakkadu, Tamil Nadu state, southern India. Specimens were found in deep crevices between rocks, in a region of semi‐arid scrub jungle. The distinctiveness of the new species was demonstrated by a morphometric analysis including the five previously described species of Linshcosteus, all from India. Nine measurements of the head were used in an isometric size‐free principal component analysis. In terms of discrete morphology the new species, Linshcosteus karupus sp.n. Galvão, Patterson, Rocha & Jurberg differs from the most similar one, L. kali Lent & Wygodzinsky, 1979 , by its very prominent anterolateral projections of the pronotum, by the length to width ratio of the pronotum, by the pilosity of the head and several other characters, including phallic structures. A revised key is presented for the six species of the genus.  相似文献
