The best method of assessing muscular force qualities during isoinertial stretch shorten cycle lower body movements remains a subject of much debate. This study had 2 purposes: Firstly, to calculate the interday reliability of peak force (PF) measurement and a variety of force-time measures, and, secondly, to compare the reliability of the 2 most common technologies for measuring force during loaded jump squats, the linear position transducer (PT), and the force plate (FP). Twenty-five male elite level rugby union players performed 3 rebound jump squats with a 40-kg external load on 2 occasions 1 week apart. Vertical ground reaction forces (GRFs) were directly measured via an FP, and force was differentiated from position data collected using a PT. From these data, a number of force-time variables were calculated for both the FP and PT. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CV), and percent change in the mean were used as measures of between-session reliability. Additionally, Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients were used to investigate intercorrelations between variables and technologies. Both FP and PT were found to be a reliable means of measuring PF (ICC = 0.88-0.96, CV = 2.3-4.8%), and the relationship between the 2 technologies was very high and high for days 1 and 2, respectively (r = 0.67-0.88). Force-time variables calculated from FP data tended to have greater relative and absolute consistency (ICC = 0.70-0.96, CV = 5.1-51.8%) than those calculated from differentiated PT data (ICC = 0.18-0.95, CV = 7.7-93.6%). Intercorrelations between variables ranged from trivial to practically perfect (r = 0.00-1.00). It was concluded that PF can be measured reliably with both FP and PT technologies, and these measurements are related. A number of force-time values can also be reliably calculated via the use of GRF data. Although some of these force-time variables can be reliably calculated using position data, variation of measurement is generally greater when using position data to calculate force.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: It is important to evaluate the reliability of common used methods of examining muscle fatigue from the lower back since the methods are used in patient evaluation. METHODS: To establish between-days reliability, ten subjects without lower-back pain performed a Sorensen test, a prone test for back extensor muscles against gravity, on three separate days. EMG was recorded from the L1 and L5 of the back extensor muscles. Fatigue was subjectively rated using a Borg CR-10 scale. Intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement and coefficient of variation were calculated from a one-way ANOVA. Percent agreement was also calculated. RESULTS: The study revealed good reliability for the slope for the total time (ICC 0.65-0.90), the initial and end median frequency (ICC 0.75-0.89), median frequencies at Borg ratings of three (ICC 0.63-0.88), five (ICC 0.62-0.84) and seven (ICC 0.67-0. 87), endurance time (ICC 0.89). The Borg ratings of the first minute agreed better than those of the second and the third. The Borg ratings at the second and the third test agreed to 40-80%, indicating a need for a practice session. CONCLUSION: The protocol used for assessing fatigue in the back extensor muscles proved to be reliable and is recommended for further use.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare the reliability and magnitude of conditioned pain modulation (CPM) by applying different test stimuli (TS) and conditioning stimuli (CS). Twenty-six healthy male participants were recruited in the study of two identical sessions. In each session, four TS (electrical, heat, handheld, and cuff pressure algometry) were applied before and during CS (cold pressor test (CPT) or cuff algometry). The same procedure was repeated with 45-min intervals, but with the other CS. Five thresholds were measured including four pain detection thresholds from four TS and pain tolerance threshold from cuff TS (cuff PTT). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC (3,1)) and coefficient of variation (CV) were calculated as measures of reliability. The reliability of TS before and during CS was good for all combinations (ICC: 0.60–0.96, CV: 2.2–22.9%), but the reliability of the CPM effect varied (ICC: 0.04–0.53, CV: 63.6–503.9%). The most reliable combinations were considered to be the handheld pressure pain threshold with CPT (ICC: 0.49, CV: 63.6%) and the cuff pressure pain threshold with CPT (ICC: 0.44, CV: 107.6%). Significant CPM effects were found for all combinations, except the combinations of electrical and heat pain thresholds with cuff CS, which indicates the novel classification of the CPM mechanism. The combinations of handheld pressure and heat pain threshold with CPT would provide the minimum sample size to detect the significant CPM changes in further studies. It is beneficial to provide and compare both ICC and CV to design further clinical trials.  相似文献

Previous studies evaluated 3D human jaw movements using kinematic analysis systems during mouth opening, but information on the reliability of such measurements is still scarce. The purpose of this study was to analyze within- and between-session reliabilities, inter-rater reliability, standard error of measurement (SEM), minimum detectable change (MDC) and consistency of agreement across raters and sessions of 3D kinematic variables during maximum mouth opening (MMO). Thirty-six asymptomatic subjects from both genders were evaluated on two different days, five to seven days apart. Subjects performed three MMO movements while kinematic data were collected. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), SEM and MDC were calculated for all variables, and Bland-Altman plots were constructed. Jaw radius and width were the most reproducible variables (ICC > 0.81) and demonstrated minor error. Incisor displacement during MMO and angular movements in the sagittal plane presented good reliability (ICC from 0.61 to 0.8) and small errors and, consequently, could be used in future studies with the same methodology and population. The variables with smaller amplitudes (condylar translations during mouth opening and closing and mandibular movements on the frontal and transversal planes) were less reliable (ICC < 0.61) and presented larger SEM and MDC. Although ICC, SEM and MDC showed less between-session reproducibility than within-session and inter-rater, the limits of agreement were larger in inter-rater comparisons. In future studies care must be taken with variables collected on different days and with mandibular movements in the frontal and transversal planes.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on development and survival of Chilocorus bipustulatus L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), a predator of many scale insects, was studied under laboratory conditions. The duration of development of egg, first, second, third, and fourth larval instars, pupa, and preovioposition period at seven constant temperatures (15, 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5, and 35°C) was measured. Development time decreased significantly with increasing temperature within the range 15-30°C. Survival was higher at medium temperatures (17.5-30(ο)C) in comparison with that at more extreme temperature regimens (15 and >30(ο)C). Egg and first larval instars were the stages where C. bipustulatus suffered the highest mortality levels at all temperatures. The highest survival was recorded when experimental individuals were older than the third larval instar. Thermal requirements of development (developmental thresholds, thermal constant, optimum temperature) of C. bipustulatus were estimated with application of linear and one nonlinear models (Logan I). Upper and lower developmental thresholds ranged between 35.2-37.9 and 11.1-13.0°C, respectively. The optimum temperature for development (where maximum rate of development occurs) was estimated at between 33.6 and 34.7°C. The thermal constant for total development was estimated 474.7 degree-days.  相似文献

The intraobserver reliabilities of the Interactive Balance System (IBS) and Vertiguard were compared in 30 asymptomatic volunteers. Relative reliability for all IBS single tasks and parameters in the IBS was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC ≥0.75). The ICC values ranged from 0.78 to 0.89. The ICC values of the Vertiguard system ranged from 0 to 0.75. The cumulative measure of injury risk of the Vertiguard system was highly reliable.  相似文献

Frog skeletal muscle mainly utilizes the substrates glucose and lactate for energy metabolism. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of insulin on the uptake and metabolic fate of lactate and glucose at rest in skeletal muscle of the American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeiana, under varying temperature regimens. We hypothesize that lactate and glucose metabolic pathways will respond differently to the presence of insulin in cold versus warm acclimated frog tissues, suggesting an interaction between temperature and metabolism under varying environmental conditions. We employed radiolabeled tracer techniques to measure in vitro uptake, oxidation, and incorporation of glucose and lactate into glycogen by isolated muscles from bullfrogs acclimated to 5 °C (cold) or 25 °C (warm). Isolated bundles from Sartorius muscles were incubated at 5 °C, 15 °C, or 25 °C, and in the presence and absence of 0.05 IU/mL bovine insulin. Insulin treatment in the warm acclimated and incubated frogs resulted in an increase in glucose incorporation into glycogen, and an increase in intracellular [glucose] of 0.5 μmol/g (P<0.05). Under the same conditions lactate incorporation into glycogen was reduced (P<0.05) in insulin-treated muscle. When compared to the warm treatment group, cold acclimation and incubation resulted in increased rates of glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis, and a reduction in free intracellular glucose levels (P<0.05). When muscles from either acclimation group were incubated at an intermediate temperature of 15 °C, insulin's effect on substrate metabolism was attenuated or even reversed. Therefore, a significant interaction between insulin and acclimation condition in controlling skeletal muscle metabolism appears to exist. Our findings further suggest that one of insulin's actions in frog muscle is to increase glucose incorporation into glycogen, and to reduce reliance on lactate as the primary metabolic fuel.  相似文献

Background: Test–retest reliability is important to establish for any diagnostic tool. The reliability of quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the trigeminal region has recently been described in Caucasians as well as differences in absolute thresholds and responses between Caucasians and Chinese. However, the test–retest reliability has not been determined in a Chinese population.

Objective: To provide novel information on the test–retest reliability of thermal QST in the trigeminal and spinal system in healthy Chinese.

Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers (10 women and 10 men) participated. Cold detection threshold (CDT), warm detection threshold (WDT), cold pain threshold (CPT), and heat pain threshold (HPT) were measured at two sites: the surface of the left hand and the left masseter. The testing was performed over three consecutive stimuli trials, three sessions conducted on one day and repeated one week later. Data were analyzed with intra-tester reliability test and four-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures.

Results: There was a tendency for the first trial in CDT (p?=?0.005), CPT (p?=?0.02), and HPT (p?p?=?0.003) and HPT (p?=?0.045) with higher sensitivity at the masseter muscle. There were significant gender differences with higher sensitivity in women for CPT (p?=?0.001) and HPT (p?=?0.001).

Conclusion: Test site and gender affect thermal thresholds substantially. The test–retest reliability of most thermal threshold measures were acceptable for assessing somatosensory function, however, innocuous thresholds appear to be associated with larger variability than noxious thresholds in a Chinese population.  相似文献

Rainbow trout remain active in waters that seasonally change between 4°C and 20°C. To explore how these fish are able to maintain cardiac function over this temperature range we characterized changes in cardiac morphology, contractile function, and the expression of contractile proteins in trout following acclimation to 4°C (cold), 12°C (control), and 17°C (warm). The relative ventricular mass (RVM) of the cold acclimated male fish was significantly greater than that of males in the control group. In addition, the compact myocardium of the cold acclimated male hearts was thinner compared to controls while the amount of spongy myocardium was found to have increased. Cold acclimation also caused an increase in connective tissue content, as well as muscle bundle area in the spongy myocardium of the male fish. Conversely, warm acclimation of male fish caused an increase in the thickness of the compact myocardium and a decrease in the amount of spongy myocardium. There was also a decrease in connective tissue content in both myocardial layers. In contrast, there was no change in the RVM or connective tissue content in the hearts of female trout with warm or cold acclimation. Cold acclimation also caused a 50% increase in the maximal rate of cardiac AM Mg(2+)-ATPase but did not influence the Ca(2+) sensitivity of this enzyme. To identify a mechanism for this change we utilized two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis to characterize changes in the cardiac contractile proteins. Cold acclimation caused subtle changes in the phosphorylation state of the slow skeletal isoform of troponin T found in the heart, as well as of myosin binding protein C. These results demonstrate that acclimation of trout to warm and cold temperatures has opposing effects on cardiac morphology and tissue composition and that this results in distinct warm and cold cardiac phenotypes.  相似文献

We found a difference between the venous hematocrits of immersed and nonimmersed arms during immersion of the lower body in cold water but not during a comparable exposure to warm water. Fourteen healthy men were exposed to three different experimental conditions: arm immersion, body immersion, and control. The men always sat upright while both upper extremities hung vertically at their sides. During arm immersion, one forearm was completely immersed for 30 min in either cold water (28 degrees C, n = 7) or warm water (38 degrees C, n = 7). This cold-warm water protocol was repeated on separate days for exposure to the remaining conditions of body immersion (immersion of 1 forearm and all tissues below the xiphoid process) and control (no immersion). Blood samples were simultaneously drawn from cannulated veins in both antecubital fossae. Hematocrit difference (Hct diff) was measured by subtracting the nonimmersed forearm's hematocrit (Hct dry) from the immersed forearm's hematocrit (Hct wet). Hct diff was approximately zero when the men were exposed to the control condition and body immersion in warm water. In the remaining conditions, Hct wet dropped below Hct dry (P less than 0.01, 3-way analysis of variance). The decrements of Hct diff showed there were differences between venous hematocrits in immersed and nonimmersed regions of the body, indicating that changes of the whole-body hematocrit cannot be calculated from a large-vessel hematocrit soon after immersing the lower body in cold water.  相似文献

Leaf death due to freezing was examined for four, co-occurring species of chaparral shrubs from the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California, Rhus laurina (= Malosma laurina), R. ovata, Ceanothus megacarpus, and C. spinosus. Measurements were made on seedlings vs. adults for all species, and for Rhus spp. in winter vs. summer, and at a warm vs. a cold site. We used four methods to determine the temperature for 50% change in activity or cell death (LT(50)) of leaves: (1) electrical conductivity (electrolyte leakage into a bathing solution), (2) photosynthetic fluorescent capacity (Fv/Fm), (3) percentage of palisade mesophyll cells stained by fluorescein diacetate vital stain, and (4) visual score of leaf color (Munsell color chart). In all four species seedlings were found to be more sensitive to freezing temperatures than were adults by 1°-3°C. For adults the LT(50) ranged from -5°C for Rhus laurina in the summer to -16°C for Rhus ovata in the winter. The LT(50) of R. ovata located at a colder inland site was 4C lower than R. ovata at the warmer coastal site just 4 km apart, suggesting ecotypic differences between R. ovata at the two sites. Both R. laurina and R. ovata underwent significant winter hardening. At the cold site, R. ovata acclimated by 6°C on average, while R. laurina acclimated by only 3°C. These results were consistent with species distributions and with field observations of differential shoot dieback between these two congeneric species after a natural freeze-thaw event in the Santa Monica Mountains.  相似文献

Appropriate reliability is a necessary condition for the use of surface EMG for evaluation of hamstring muscle function in cases of knee joint pathologies or ligament injuries. The aim of the study was to investigate the test-retest reliability of power spectrum and amplitude of surface electromyographic (EMG) measurements of semitendinosus (ST) and biceps femoris (BF) during ramp isometric contractions. Eleven males performed maximum isometric contractions (MVC) of the knee flexors in two sessions, a week apart with simultaneous recording of surface EMG of the BF and ST. Intra class correlation (ICC) and standard error measurements (SEM) were applied to assess test-retest reliability of the averaged EMG (aEMG) and the median frequency (MF) over 10 levels of force, from 0% to 100% of the maximum. The ICC values ranged from 0.38 to 0.96 for the aEMG with SEM values reaching 11.37% of MVC. For the MF, the ICCs ranged from 0.44 to 0.98 (SEM range 4.49–18.19 Hz). In our set up, ramp contractions can be used to examine hamstring EMG patterns with acceptable reliability.  相似文献

Alterations in scapular muscle activity, including excess activation of the upper trapezius (UT) and onset latencies of the lower trapezius (LT) and serratus anterior (SA) muscles, are associated with abnormal scapular motion and shoulder impingement. Limited information exists on the reliability of neuromuscular activity to demonstrate the efficacy of interventions. The purpose of this study was to characterize the reproducibility of scapular muscle activity (mean activity, relative onset timing) over time and establish the minimal detectable change (MDC). Surface electromyography (sEMG) of the UT, LT, SA and anterior deltoid (AD) muscles in 16 adults were captured during an overhead lifting task in two sessions, one-week apart. sEMG data were also normalized to maximum isometric contraction and the relative onset and mean muscle activity during concentric and eccentric phases of the scapular muscles were calculated. Additionally, reliability of the absolute sEMG data during the lifting task and MVIC was evaluated. Both intrasession and intersession reliability of normalized and absolute mean scapular muscle activity, assessed with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), ranged from 0.62 to 0.99; MDC values were between 1.3% and 11.7% MVIC and 24 to 135 mV absolute sEMG. Reliability of sEMG during MVIC was ICC = 0.82–0.99, with the exception of intersession upper trapezius reliability (ICC = 0.36). Within session reliability of muscle onset times was ICC = 0.88–0.97, but between session reliability was lower with ICC = 0.43–0.73; MDC were between 39 and 237 ms. Small changes in scapular neuromuscular mean activity (>11.7% MVIC) can be interpreted as meaningful change, while change in muscle onset timing in light of specific processing parameters used in this study is more variable.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the reliability of a large number of commonly utilized experimental tests of in vivo human neuromuscular function separated by 4-weeks. Numerous electrophysiological parameters (i.e., voluntary and evoked electromyogram [EMG] signals), contractile properties (i.e., evoked forces and rates of force development and relaxation), muscle morphology (i.e., MRI-derived cross-sectional area [CSA]) and performance tasks (i.e., steadiness and time to task failure) were assessed from the plantarflexor muscle group in 17 subjects before and following 4-weeks where they maintained their normal lifestyle. The reliability of the measured variables had wide-ranging levels of consistency, with coefficient of variations (CV) ranging from approximately 2% to 20%, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) between 0.53 and 0.99. Overall, we observed moderate to high-levels of reliability in the vast majority of the variables we assessed (24 out of the 29 had ICC>0.70 and CV<15%). The variables demonstrating the highest reliability were: CSA (ICC=0.93-0.98), strength (ICC=0.97), an index of nerve conduction velocity (ICC=0.95), and H-reflex amplitude (ICC=0.93). Conversely, the variables demonstrating the lowest reliability were: the amplitude of voluntary EMG signal (ICC=0.53-0.88), and the time to task failure of a sustained submaximal contraction (ICC=0.64). Additionally, relatively little systematic bias (calculated through the limits of agreement) was observed in these measures over the repeat sessions. In conclusion, while the reliability differed between the various measures, in general it was rather high even when the testing sessions are separated by a relatively long duration of time.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the reproducibility of measurements of the forearm thresholds for warm (WT) and cold (CT) sensation, and their dependence on gender. The Middlesex Thermal Testing System was used for this purpose. CT did not differ between the five consecutive trials, whereas WT fell significantly. A minimum of two trial tests are therefore recommended prior to the assessment of WT. Furthermore, CT and WT were induced by significantly smaller skin temperature changes (lower thresholds) in females as compared to males. Should this gender specific difference in thermosensitivity also be observed in other skin regions, then females would be more sensitive to thermal stimulation than males.  相似文献

Fasting weaned northern elephant seal pups (Mirounga angustirostris) experience diverse environmental conditions on land and in water on a daily basis. Each environment undoubtedly induces distinct energetic costs that may vary for pups of differing body condition. To determine the energetic costs associated with different environmental conditions and whether costs vary between individuals, body mass, surface area, volume, body composition, resting metabolic rate, and core body temperature were determined for 17 weaned northern elephant seal pups from A?o Nuevo, California. Metabolic rate and body temperature were measured for pups resting in air (20.9 degrees +/-0.8 degrees C), cold water (3.8 degrees+/-0.4 degrees ;C), and warm water (14.5 degrees+/-0.2 degrees C). Resting metabolic rate increased with body mass (range: 62.0-108.0 kg) and was also correlated with lean mass and lipid mass. Metabolic rates ranged from 293.6 to 512.7 mL O(2) min(-1) and were lowest for pups resting in cold water. Thermal conductance, calculated from metabolic rate and core body temperature, ranged from 3.1 to 15.2 W degrees C(-1), with the highest values in air and the lowest values in cold water. Metabolic responses to the three environmental conditions did not differ with individual variation in body condition. For all elephant seal pups, a consequence of high lipid content is that thermoregulatory costs are greatest on land and lowest in cold water, a pattern that contrasts markedly with terrestrial mammals.  相似文献

The reliability of three devices used for measuring vertical jump height   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The purpose of this investigation was to assess the intrasession and intersession reliability of the Vertec, Just Jump System, and Myotest for measuring countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) height. Forty male and 39 female university students completed 3 maximal-effort CMJs during 2 testing sessions, which were separated by 24-48 hours. The height of the CMJ was measured from all 3 devices simultaneously. Systematic error, relative reliability, absolute reliability, and heteroscedasticity were assessed for each device. Systematic error across the 3 CMJ trials was observed within both sessions for males and females, and this was most frequently observed when the CMJ height was measured by the Vertec. No systematic error was discovered across the 2 testing sessions when the maximum CMJ heights from the 2 sessions were compared. In males, the Myotest demonstrated the best intrasession reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.95; SEM = 1.5 cm; coefficient of variation [CV] = 3.3%) and intersession reliability (ICC = 0.88; SEM = 2.4 cm; CV = 5.3%; limits of agreement = -0.08 ± 4.06 cm). Similarly, in females, the Myotest demonstrated the best intrasession reliability (ICC = 0.91; SEM = 1.4 cm; CV = 4.5%) and intersession reliability (ICC = 0.92; SEM = 1.3 cm; CV = 4.1%; limits of agreement = 0.33 ± 3.53 cm). Additional analysis revealed that heteroscedasticity was present in the CMJ when measured from all 3 devices, indicating that better jumpers demonstrate greater fluctuations in CMJ scores across testing sessions. To attain reliable CMJ height measurements, practitioners are encouraged to familiarize athletes with the CMJ technique and then allow the athletes to complete numerous repetitions until performance plateaus, particularly if the Vertec is being used.  相似文献

Summary The responses of single sensory afferent nerve fibres were recorded from small nerve bundles of the intramandibular nerve of the chicken following thermal and mechanical stimulation of the beak. Thermoreceptors, nociceptors and mechanoreceptors were identified and their responses characterized.Of the thermoreceptors identified 11 units were classified as cold receptors, which responded to cooling the receptive field by increasing the discharge rate and had conduction velocities in the range 0.83 to 4.4 m/s. Only one warm unit was identified. Two classes of nociceptors were identified: mechano-thermal (polymodal) nociceptors and high threshold mechanical nociceptors. The discharge characteristics and stimulus-response curves of both types were described. While the mechanothermal nociceptors were exclusively C-fibres (c.v. 0.4 to 1.86 m/s), the high threshold mechanoreceptors contained both C and A delta fibres (c.v. 1 to 5.5 m/s). Thermal response thresholds for the mechano-thermal units ranged from 41 to 50 °C with mechanical thresholds of 2 to over 50 g. Mechanical thresholds for the high threshold units ranged from 5 to over 50 g.The mechanoreceptors were either slowly or rapidly adapting. The pattern of response together with stimulus-response curves were presented for the slowly adapting units. Conduction velocities of the slowly adapting units varied from 0.7 to 20 m/s and mechanical threshold from 0.1 to 2 g. On the basis of their response to a vibrating, and a ramp-and-hold mechanical stimulus, the rapidly adapting units were divided into Herbst and Grandry units with only the Herbst units responding accurately to the vibrating stimulus. Both units had fibres conducting in the 50 m/s range with thresholds in the 0.1 to 10 g range. The results are discussed in relation to the receptors found in other avian species and mammalian peripheral sensory afferents.Abbreviations c.v. conduction velocity - RA rapidly adapting (receptors) - SA slowly adapting (receptors)  相似文献

The broad objective of this research was to define the role of warm (≥15°C) stratification in breaking dormancy in seeds with stony endocarps that require warm-plus-cold (~0°-10°C) stratification for germination. This question was addressed using seeds (true seed + endocarp, hereafter called seeds) of Empetrum hermaphroditum. Only 2-5% of freshly matured seeds collected in September and October at five sites in Sweden germinated in light at daily alternating temperature regimes of 15°/6°, 20°/10°, and 25°/15°C. Dormancy was not due to impermeability of the stony endocarp surrounding each seed, and embryos did not grow prior to radicle emergence. Thus, seeds did not have physical, morphological, or morphophysiological dormancy. Long periods of either cold stratification (20 or 32 wk) or warm stratification (16 wk) resulted in a maximum of 22-38 and 10% germination, respectively, in light at 25°/15°C. After 12 wk warm stratification plus 20 wk cold stratification, 83-93% of the seeds germinated in light at the three temperature regimes. For a cold stratification period of 20 wk, germination increased with increase in length of the preceding warm stratification treatment. Gibberellic acid (GA(3)) promoted germination of 77-87% of the seeds. Based on dormancy-breaking requirements and response to GA(3), 62-78% of the seeds had intermediate physiological dormancy; the others had nondeep physiological dormancy. Contrary to suggestions of several other investigators that warm stratification is required to make the endocarp permeable to water via its breakdown by microorganisms, our results with E. hermaphroditum show that this is not the case. In this species, warm stratification is part of the dormancy-breaking requirement of embryos in seeds with intermediate physiological dormancy.  相似文献
