The theoretical setting of hierarchical Bayesian inference is gaining acceptance as a framework for understanding cortical computation. In this paper, we describe how Bayesian belief propagation in a spatio-temporal hierarchical model, called Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM), can lead to a mathematical model for cortical circuits. An HTM node is abstracted using a coincidence detector and a mixture of Markov chains. Bayesian belief propagation equations for such an HTM node define a set of functional constraints for a neuronal implementation. Anatomical data provide a contrasting set of organizational constraints. The combination of these two constraints suggests a theoretically derived interpretation for many anatomical and physiological features and predicts several others. We describe the pattern recognition capabilities of HTM networks and demonstrate the application of the derived circuits for modeling the subjective contour effect. We also discuss how the theory and the circuit can be extended to explain cortical features that are not explained by the current model and describe testable predictions that can be derived from the model.  相似文献

Formation of Root Epidermal Transfer Cells in Plantago   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The root ultrastructure and transmembrane electron transport activities of two Plantago species have been examined with respect to alterations in response to Fe deficiency, exogenously supplied auxin, and the presence of chromium in the external medium. Both species showed increased ferric reductase activity upon Fe starvation, but they differed in the maximum rates. The addition of chromium to the nutrient solution led to a further enhancement in Fe-ethylenediaminetetraacetate reduction by Fe-deficient plants. In roots of Plantago lanceolata, the enhanced redox activity is associated with the formation of transfer cells in the epidermis. Similar characteristics of rhizodermal cells were observed in Fe-sufficient roots 3 d after application of the auxin analog 2,4-dichlorophenoxy-acetic acid. No structural adaptations occurred in roots of Plantago maritima. A quantitative estimation of the frequencies of transfer cells in root segments of Fe-deficient plants that differ in reduction activity revealed no correlation between the two phenomena. It is concluded that the area of plasmalemma infoldings is not specialized for the enhanced reduction of extracytoplasmatic Fe in response to Fe deficiency. The role of transfer cells in the adaptation to suboptimal Fe availability and the mechanisms triggering their formation are discussed.  相似文献

Long-distance migration in whales has historically been described as an annual, round-trip movement between high-latitude, summer feeding grounds, and low-latitude, winter breeding areas, but there is no consensus about why whales travel to the tropics to breed. Between January 2009 and February 2016, we satellite-tagged 62 antarctic killer whales (Orcinus orca) of four different ecotypes, of which at least three made short-term (6–8 weeks), long-distance (maximum 11,000 km, round trip), essentially nonstop, migrations to warm waters (SST 20°C–24°C), and back. We previously suggested that antarctic killer whales could conserve body heat in subfreezing (to −1.9°C) waters by reducing blood flow to their skin, but that this might preclude normal (i.e., continuous) epidermal molt, and necessitate periodic trips to warm waters for routine skin maintenance (“skin molt migration,” SMM). In contrast to the century-old “feeding/breeding” migration paradigm, but consistent with a “feeding/molting” hypothesis, the current study provides additional evidence that deferred skin molt could be the main driver of long-distance migration for antarctic killer whales. Furthermore, we argue that for all whales that forage in polar latitudes and migrate to tropical waters, SMM might also allow them to exploit rich prey resources in a physiologically challenging environment and maintain healthy skin.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to study the features of a simple replicator chemical model of the relation between kinetic stability and entropy production under the action of external perturbations. We quantitatively explore the different paths leading to evolution in a toy model where two independent replicators compete for the same substrate. To do that, the same scenario described originally by Pross (J Phys Org Chem 17:312–316, 2004) is revised and new criteria to define the kinetic stability are proposed. Our results suggest that fast replicator populations are continually favored by the effects of strong stochastic environmental fluctuations capable to determine the global population, the former assumed to be the only acting evolution force. We demonstrate that the process is continually driven by strong perturbations only, and that population crashes may be useful proxies for these catastrophic environmental fluctuations. As expected, such behavior is particularly enhanced under very large scale perturbations, suggesting a likely dynamical footprint in the recovery patterns of new species after mass extinction events in the Earth’s geological past. Furthermore, the hypothesis that natural selection always favors the faster processes may give theoretical support to different studies that claim the applicability of maximum principles like the Maximum Metabolic Flux (MMF) or Maximum Entropy Productions Principle (MEPP), seen as the main goal of biological evolution.  相似文献

An analysis is made of two aspects of the behaviour of a proposedmechanism of translocation based on the mixing effect withina sieve-tube of streaming transcellular strands of protoplasmpassing through the sieve-pores and through a vacuole-like reservoirof sucrose solution in each sieve-element. First, the behaviour of the model is considered when it is transportinga solute (sucrose, for example) in the steady-state conditionof constant consumption and supply. It is found that the concentrationsof solute in the regions of the model are readily determinedat all points of the sieve-tube, and that the gradients of concentrationare all equal, the concentrations differing by constant amountsat all points. Transport is analogous to diffusive transferin that the steepness of the concentration gradient is proportionalto the rate of transfer and simple expressions are derived forthe net transport of solute and for the apparent diffusion coefficientin terms of the properties of the model. Transfer is found tobe rapid over a short path and slower over a longer path; thereis a maximum distance beyond which a given rate of transfercannot take place. Second, an analysis is made of the unsteady behaviour of themodel when changing concentrations of solute are introducedinto the system. The concept of strand diffusion time is introduced.This is the time taken for the concentration in the strand surroundedby an infinite reservoir to fall to I/e of its initial value.The results of this analysis are used to determine how radioactivesolute will become distributed when it is introduced into thesteady-state model. If the time over which the translocationof radioactive solute has proceeded is small compared with thestrand diffusion time, a wave-like profile of radioactivitywith distance is produced, and if large, the profile is of adiffusive kind; intermediate conditions give a profile displayingboth characteristics which is termed the transition type. Thesethree types of profile of radioactivity are exemplified by experimentsin different plants (Salix, Tropaeolum, and Helianthus), andthe experimental profiles are used to estimate (1) the apparentdiffusion coefficient of translocated sucrose in the sense ofMason and Maskell, and (2) the permeability constant of thestrand-reservoir boundary. The close correspondence betweenthese two sets of figures derived from the radioactive profileswith the experimental values obtained directly is regarded asstrong confirmation of the theory.  相似文献

Epidermal stratification of the mammalian skin requires proliferative basal progenitors to generate intermediate cells that separate from the basal layer and are replaced by post-mitotic cells. Although Wnt signaling has been implicated in this developmental process, the mechanism underlying Wnt-mediated regulation of basal progenitors remains elusive. Here we show that Wnt secreted from proliferative basal cells is not required for their differentiation. However, epidermal production of Wnts is essential for the formation of the spinous layer through modulation of a BMP-FGF signaling cascade in the dermis. The spinous layer defects caused by disruption of Wnt secretion can be restored by transgenically expressed Bmp4. Non-cell autonomous BMP4 promotes activation of FGF7 and FGF10 signaling, leading to an increase in proliferative basal cell population. Our findings identify an essential BMP-FGF signaling axis in the dermis that responds to the epidermal Wnts and feedbacks to regulate basal progenitors during epidermal stratification.  相似文献

Frozen tissue sections of developing axolotl embryos were labeled by indirect immunofluorescence with anti-alpha-MSH. Anti-MSH immunoreactivity is first detectable in embryos when neural crest cells are migrating from the neural tube. Antibody labeling is visible around the lateral and ventral edges of the neural tube and in the embryonic ectoderm. As development progresses, the amount of labeling increases greatly, particularly in developing ectoderm. Western blots of soluble proteins extracted from various developmental stages of axolotl embryo ectoderm reveal that MSH activity is associated directly with several high molecular weight components that may be part of the embryonic extracellular matrix. Thus, we suggest that melanotropin activity is present in embryonic axolotl skin, is associated with the extracellular matrix, and is thereby in a position to play a supportive and/or directive role in the establishment of embryonic pigment patterns.  相似文献

Ca2+ suppressed both the ion-stimulated stomatal opening andH+ extrusion of pre-illuminated epidermal strips isolated fromCommelina communis L. In the absence of Ca2+, the rate of H+release was 18 nmol H+ cm–2 h–1 per epidermal stripunit area in 150 mol m–3 KCL at pH 7?4. Half-maximum inhibitionof stomatal opening was observed with 220 mmol m–3 ofCa2+. The hexavalent dye, ruthenium red, showed concentration-dependentprevention of the inhibition by Ca2+ of the ion-stimulated stomatalopening. The effect of ruthenium red was non-competitive, andthe K1 for the calcium inhibition was found to be 3?6 mmol m–3.The calcium inhibition of H+ extrusion was also prevented byruthenium red. These results suggest that Ca2+ inhibits theactivity of electrogenic H+ translocating ATPase of the guardcell plasma membrane and leads to the suppression of stomatalopening. While the important role of calcium (Ca++) signaling is fundamental in epidermal cell physiology, a detailed knowledge of precisely how epidermal cells respond to Ca++ levels is not clear. Using peptide-specific antibodies that we generated, we set out to evaluate the temporal and spatial distribution pattern of the Ca++-sensing receptor (CaSR) during epidermogenesis and to assess its involvement in the mature epidermis (e.g., in acute injury and tumorigenesis). Our data indicate a developmentally regulated expression of CaSR: up-regulation occurs in specific epidermal cells and cell layers in normal development or in response to injury when epidermal cells are induced to undergo commitment and early differentiation events, and down-regulation occurs in terminal differentiation stages. These results provide a new perspective on the role of the CaSR in these processes and describe a novel tool for evaluating Ca++-mediated epidermal differentiation.  相似文献

Hyaluronan (HA) is produced by keratinocytes in human skin organ culture, and degraded locally in epidermis by an unknown metabolic route. The present work tested whether reactive oxygen species (ROS), spontaneously produced in the tissue, could contribute to HA catabolism in epidermis. Epidermal HA was endogenously labeled with 3H-glucosamine for 24 h, then chased for 24 h in the presence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase to reduce the concentration of ROS. In control cultures, 35% of labeled HA was degraded during the 24 h chase while the corresponding figures in the presence of SOD and catalase were 19% and 23%, respectively (p < 0.05). Methionine, a quencher of hypochlorous acid, did not significantly inhibit the degradation. In additional experiments, the iron and copper chelator Detapac was even more effective, reducing the degradation to 8–9%, and suggesting that the ROS responsible for the degradation were produced in the Fenton reaction. Dermal HA, and proteoglycans in both epidermis and dermis were not influenced by the treatments, indicating that the inhibition by SOD, catalase and Detapac on epidermal HA catabolism was specific. It is suggested that endogenous ROS is involved in the catabolism human epidermal HA.  相似文献

There is a need for fit-for-purpose maps for accurately depicting the types of seabed substrate and habitat and the properties of the seabed for the benefits of research, resource management, conservation and spatial planning. The aim of this study is to determine whether it is possible to predict substrate composition across a large area of seabed using legacy grain-size data and environmental predictors. The study area includes the North Sea up to approximately 58.44°N and the United Kingdom’s parts of the English Channel and the Celtic Seas. The analysis combines outputs from hydrodynamic models as well as optical remote sensing data from satellite platforms and bathymetric variables, which are mainly derived from acoustic remote sensing. We build a statistical regression model to make quantitative predictions of sediment composition (fractions of mud, sand and gravel) using the random forest algorithm. The compositional data is analysed on the additive log-ratio scale. An independent test set indicates that approximately 66% and 71% of the variability of the two log-ratio variables are explained by the predictive models. A EUNIS substrate model, derived from the predicted sediment composition, achieved an overall accuracy of 83% and a kappa coefficient of 0.60. We demonstrate that it is feasible to spatially predict the seabed sediment composition across a large area of continental shelf in a repeatable and validated way. We also highlight the potential for further improvements to the method.  相似文献

Almost one in four women in Cambodia is a victim of physical, emotional or sexual violence. This article brings together two seldom connected fields: Theory of Change (ToC) and cultural responsiveness in international development. It applies these approaches to a priority in global health, which is to prevent violence against women (VAW) and, drawing on my research on the epigenesis of VAW in Cambodia, develops an argument on the need for interventions to work with tradition and culture rather than only highlight it in problematic terms. The research draws on an ethnographic study carried out in Cambodia with 102 perpetrators and survivors of emotional, physical and sexual VAW and 228 key informants from the Buddhist and healing sectors. The eight ‘cultural attractors’ identified in the author’s prior research highlight the cultural barriers to acceptance of the current Theory of Change. ToC for VAW prevention in Cambodia seems to assume that local culture promotes VAW and that men and women must be educated to eradicate the traditional gender norms. There is a need for interventions to work with tradition and culture rather than only highlight it in problematic terms. The cultural epigenesis of VAW in Cambodia is an insight which can be used to build culturally responsive interventions and strengthen the primary prevention of VAW.  相似文献

The content and pattern of soluble isoperoxidases were determined in epidermal explants taken from different internodes of tobacco plants in the vegetative and floral states. There were qualitative and quantitative differences in the isoperoxidases, with a decrease in content and fewer bands being observed acropetally, i.e., in going from the base of the stem towards the apex. Epidermal explants from floral branches were grown in in vitro culture, with various media moditications, to form de novo floral or vegetative buds, roots or callus. Changes in soluble isoperoxidases were followed electrophoretically in relation to these varying morphogenetic pathways. In each of them, the number of bands increased on both the anodic and cathodic sides with time in culture. Compared to each other these four morphogenetic programmes were different in their peroxidase zymograms, mainly through varying kinetics in the development of activity of the isoenzymes. The changes observed during root and vegetative bud formation agree with previously published data, and the changes during floral bud formation agree with those observed in vivo.  相似文献
