Climate‐driven range shifts are ongoing in pelagic marine environments, and ecosystems must respond to combined effects of altered species distributions and environmental drivers. Hypoxic oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in midwater environments are shoaling globally; this can affect distributions of species both geographically and vertically along with predator–prey dynamics. Humboldt (jumbo) squid (Dosidicus gigas) are highly migratory predators adapted to hypoxic conditions that may be deleterious to their competitors and predators. Consequently, OMZ shoaling may preferentially facilitate foraging opportunities for Humboldt squid. With two separate modeling approaches using unique, long‐term data based on in situ observations of predator, prey, and environmental variables, our analyses suggest that Humboldt squid are indirectly affected by OMZ shoaling through effects on a primary food source, myctophid fishes. Our results suggest that this indirect linkage between hypoxia and foraging is an important driver of the ongoing range expansion of Humboldt squid in the northeastern Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Oxygen and carbon isotopes of foraminifera were analyzed in core PC4, water depth 1366 m, off northern Japan, near the east side of the Tsugaru Strait (130 m depth) between the open northwestern Pacific Ocean and the Japan Sea. At present, the site is at the confluence of the Tsugaru Warm Current which flows eastwards out of the Sea of Japan through the Tsugaru Strait, the subarctic Oyashio Current and the subtropic Kuroshio Current. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the Oyashio Current penetrated further to the South and outflow from the Japan Sea was restricted by glacio-eustatic sea level lowering. The isotopic values of the planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) and the benthic foraminifer Uvigerina akitaensis reflect rapid millennial-scale paleoceanographic changes between 34 and 6 ka. Hydrographic changes during deglaciation were related to events at high northern latitudes, but Holocene hydrographic changes were dominated by local effects, such as the development of the outflow of the Tsugaru Warm Current. High values of planktic δ18O during the LGM reflect the southward advance of the Oyashio Current. These values decreased by 0.3‰ from 19.4 to 18.9 ka, then increased by 0.5‰ at 18 ka, with highest values between 17.5 and 15 ka. The δ18O oscillations between 19.4 and 15 ka may reflect millennial-scale warm–cold oscillations during Heinrich event 1. Planktic microfossil data indicate that cold Oyashio waters flowed from the northwestern Pacific into the Japan Sea via the Tsugaru Strait between 17 and 16 ka, consistent with the occurrence of the highest planktic δ18O values in core PC4. Planktic δ18O values rapidly decreased by 0.9‰ at 15 ka, possibly reflecting the effects of both a rapid increase in fresh water flux and rising temperatures in the subarctic North Pacific. During the Younger Dryas, cold event planktic δ18O values increased by 0.5‰, followed by a gradual decrease by 1‰ from the early to middle Holocene, reflecting a gradual increase in eastward outflow via the Tsugaru Strait with sea level rise. Both planktic and benthic foraminiferal δ13C values oscillated between 34 and 10 ka, at relatively large amplitudes (about 0.5‰), then remained relatively stable during the last 10 kyr. Several negative planktic and benthic (∼  0.7‰) δ13C excursions were present in sediment dated between the precipitation of secondary carbonates during episodic methane release possibly associated with methane release from continental margin sediments.  相似文献

Bryant and Eastern Canyons are located in northwest Gulf of Mexico, and are characterized by a complex sedimentological history related to glacioeustatic cycles, river discharges, and interactions between depositional and halokinetic processes. This study is based on detailed sedimentological analysis from forty-eight long cores from these two canyons. This paper determines the evolutionary history of the canyons and assesses the response of sedimentary processes to morphological, climatic, hydrological, and sea-level changes.During the last glaciation, the upper and middle continental slope was supplied with sediments by low density turbidity currents derived from the depositional segregation (deposition of the coarsest material in the most proximal locations) of large turbidity currents initiated on the outer shelf. The lower continental slope was supplied with sediment by westward flowing bottom currents, originated from the entrainment of the most diluted wash-load and tails of turbidity currents from the Mississippi Fan.Bryant and Eastern Canyon systems were active during the penultimate glaciation, Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6, and were supplied with sediments by an ancestral shelf-margin Mississippi River delta. Gravity flows transported enormous amounts of sediment to the continental slope and abyssal plain of the northwest Gulf of Mexico. The sea-level rise at MIS 5 led to confinement of river-sourced sediments to the widespread continental shelf of the northwest Gulf of Mexico, and consequently to the cessation of gravity flows. During the first 40 kyr of MIS 5, salt diapirs transformed the canyons into a network of intraslope basins. The sea level dropped to the mid-shelf during MIS 3 and 4, but never reached the shelf-break, and therefore, river-sourced sediments remained largely confined to the shelf. However, seaward sediment transportation was achieved occasionally through turbidity currents related to sediment failures, storms, and high-river discharges. Four high river discharge events have been identified during this period. The first three were centred at 37, 45, and 53 cal ka BP. The last high river discharge occurred at the end of MIS 3 (29.4-33.2 cal ka BP), and resulted in the deposition of closely-spaced, mud turbidites over the entire continental slope. The Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was restricted north of the upper Mississippi River valley during 60 to ∼ 30 cal ka BP and therefore, the high river discharge events are interpreted as melt-water events, related to brief southward advancements of the LIS, which resulted in the flooding of Mississippi River. The extensive lowering of sea level during the last glacial maximum (MIS 2) resulted in the almost direct discharge of Mississippi River sediments to the upper continental slope leading to the development of abundant turbidity currents. Eleven wet-dry cycles during this period are defined; they probably originated from episodic subglacial melt-water floods, released from southern parts of the LIS.The last deglaciation event is characterized by the development of a major melt water event at 16.5-13 cal ka BP that resulted in the deposition of distinct, organic-rich sediments. At about 13 cal ka BP, the melt water discharges of the LIS in North America switched from the Mississippi River to either the St. Lawrence or Mackenzie River valleys, causing the domination of hemipelagic sedimentation on the continental slope of the northwest Gulf of Mexico. Isotopic data indicate that melt-water discharges returned to the Mississippi River Valley at ∼ 11.4 cal ka BP. The absence of any sedimentological indication on the continental slope of the northwest Gulf of Mexico of the return of the melt-water discharges to the Mississippi River is attributed to the confinement of river-sourced sediments on the continental shelf due to the rise of the sea level.  相似文献

Four radiolarian assemblages have been defined in recent seafloor sediments of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The distribution of these assemblages corresponds to the modern pattern of oceanic circulation and water mass structure in this region: the eastern Pacific shallow permanent thermocline and the Equatorial Undercurrent; Peru Current upwelling and the oxygen minimum; the subtropical water mass; warm western tropical water and the North Equatorial Countercurrent. In twelve cores chosen to transect the region both longitudinally and latitudinally, the distribution of these four assemblages has been reconstructed for six time-intervals during the last 127,000 years: 18,000 B.P. (glacial Stage 2); 36,000 B.P. and 52,000 B.P. (interstadial Stage 3); 65,000 B.P. (glacial Stage 4); 82,000 B.P. and 120,000 B.P. (interglacial Stage 5). Atmospheric and oceanic circulation changes through time have been inferred from the reconstructed microfossil assemblage distributions. Changes in assemblage distributions indicate that variations in intensity, direction and mean position of the tradewinds caused marked changes in the oceanic circulation patterns through the last glacial cycle.Near the end of interglacial Stage 5, the disappearance of the North Equatorial Countercurrent from the eastern Pacific suggests that the mean position of the tradewinds was shifted to the south approximately 5° of latitude relative to the modern position, so that the Northeast trades prevented the flow of the North Equatorial Countercurrent into the eastern Pacific. Near the end of interstadial Stage 3, a change in wind direction occurred from predominantly zonal winds, which enhance equatorial divergence and surfacing of the Equatorial Undercurrent, to more meridional winds, which enhance coastal upwelling associated with the Peru Current. In the tropical Pacific Ocean, late Quaternary changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation are linked with times of continental ice sheet growth in the Northern Hemisphere (i.e., the interglacial-to-glacial transitions across oxygen isotope stage boundaries 54 and 32). The major changes in circulation seem to occur a few thousand years in advance of the glacial episodes, at or near periods of ice sheet growth. This relationship indicates that changes in atmospheric circulation in the tropics led and influenced the development of conditions suitable for polar and continental ice sheet growth in the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

Recent global warming is pronounced in high-latitude regions (e.g. northern Asia), and will cause the vegetation to change. Future vegetation trends (e.g. the “arctic greening”) will feed back into atmospheric circulation and the global climate system. Understanding the nature and causes of past vegetation changes is important for predicting the composition and distribution of future vegetation communities. Fossil pollen records from 468 sites in northern and eastern Asia were biomised at selected times between 40 cal ka bp and today. Biomes were also simulated using a climate-driven biome model and results from the two approaches compared in order to help understand the mechanisms behind the observed vegetation changes. The consistent biome results inferred by both approaches reveal that long-term and broad-scale vegetation patterns reflect global- to hemispheric-scale climate changes. Forest biomes increase around the beginning of the late deglaciation, become more widespread during the early and middle Holocene, and decrease in the late Holocene in fringe areas of the Asian Summer Monsoon. At the southern and southwestern margins of the taiga, forest increases in the early Holocene and shows notable species succession, which may have been caused by winter warming at ca. 7 cal ka bp. At the northeastern taiga margin (central Yakutia and northeastern Siberia), shrub expansion during the last deglaciation appears to prevent the permafrost from thawing and hinders the northward expansion of evergreen needle-leaved species until ca. 7 cal ka bp. The vegetation-climate disequilibrium during the early Holocene in the taiga-tundra transition zone suggests that projected climate warming will not cause a northward expansion of evergreen needle-leaved species.  相似文献

The responses of community assemblages of planktonic and benthonic foraminifera and coccolithophorids to transient climate change are explored for the uppermost 2 m of cores ODP677B (1.2°N; 83.74°W, 3461 m) and TR163-38 (1.34°S; 81.58°W, 2200 m), for the last ∼ 40 ka. Results suggest that the deglaciation interval was a time of increased productivity and a major reorganization of planktonic trophic webs. The succession in dominance between the planktonic foraminifera species Globorotalia inflata, Globigerina bulloides, and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma denote four periods of oceanographic change: (1) advection (24-20 ka), (2) strong upwelling (20-15 ka), (3) weak upwelling (14-8 ka) and (4) oligotrophy (8 ka to present). Strong upwelling for the deglaciation interval is supported by the low Florisphaera profunda/other coccolithophorids ratio and the high percentage abundance of Gephyrocapsa oceanica. Benthonic foraminifera assemblage changes are different in both cores and suggest significant regional variations in surface productivity and/or oxygen content at the seafloor, and a decoupling between surface productivity and export production to the seafloor. This decoupling is evidenced by the inverse relationship between the percentage abundance of infaunal benthonic foraminifera and the percentage abundance of N. pachyderma. The terrigenous input of the Colombian Pacific rivers, particularly the San Juan River, is suggested as a possible mechanism. Finally, the Globorotalia cultrata/Neogloboquadrina dutertrei ratio is used to reconstruct the past influence of the Costa Rica Dome-Panama Bight and cold tongue upwelling systems in the Panama Basin. A northern influence is suggested for the late Holocene (after 5 ka) and the last glacial (before 20 ka), whereas a southern influence is suggested for the 20-5 ka interval. There is a correspondence between our reconstructed northern and southern influences and previously proposed positions of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).  相似文献

Orphan Basin is a deep-water basin on the continental margin off Newfoundland, which throughout the late Quaternary received proglacial sediment from local ice that crossed the continental shelf. Sediment from more distant sources was transported southward in the Labrador Current as proglacial plumes and in icebergs. Five sedimentary facies related to glacial processes are distinguished in cores recovered from Orphan Basin: hemipelagic sediment, nepheloid-layer deposits (layered mud), beds rich in ice-rafted detritus (IRD), sand and mud turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits. IRD-rich beds correspond to periods of intensified iceberg calving, and layered mud, turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits with glacial meltwater discharge.

In the Late Wisconsinan, eight periods of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving from the Newfoundland ice sheet are interpreted from the sediment facies in Orphan Basin. These discharges coincide with the terminations of the colder periods of the D–O cycles recorded in Greenland ice cores. The oldest minor meltwater event (27.5–28.5 cal ka) corresponds to the first Late Wisconsinan ice advance across the Grand Banks and NE Newfoundland Shelf. The following three meltwater discharges (23–23.5, 23.8–24.5, and 25–27 cal ka) deposited sand turbidites and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits seaward of Trinity Trough, which was occupied by an ice stream at this time, and mud turbidites in the southern part of the basin derived from a mid-shelf ice margin on the Grand Banks. Four periods of meltwater discharge occurred during the deglaciation and are centered at 15, 18.5, 19.75, and 20.75 cal ka. The youngest is correlated to Heinrich event 1. In the literature, the 18.5 and 20.75 cal ka events have been recorded in multiple glacial settings in the North Atlantic, and therefore, are interpreted as large-scale events of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving, but in Orphan Basin the 19.75 cal ka event is also of similar scale.  相似文献

The last 140 ka in the Afro-Asian arid/semi-arid transitional zone   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
During the last ten years, a great number of geological or other proxy records provided radiocarbon, U/Th or TL dated information on the past climatic oscillations in the arid/semi-arid zones extending between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Comparisons and a synthetic view of these results can now be attempted for the last 140 ka, and compared with global changes, as registered in oceanic or ice cores, and with palaeomonsson models: for this purpose, wide spatial and time scales have to be used. On the whole, arid/humid alternations roughly fit global changes, cold phases corresponding to an extension of the arid areas to the South, warm phases corresponding to the shrinking of the same to the North.

The last interglacial is associated with an increase of precipitation throughout the area considered. Isotopic stage 4 brings no evidence whatsoever of humid conditions. Two wetter episodes are registrated during stage 3. A major rainfall decrease is everywhere associated with the Last Glacial Maximum (21-15 ka in most regions), the arid or semi-arid zones extending several hundred kilometers southwards, relative to the present-day pattern. The two abrupt deglaciation steps and the Younger Dryas are recorded in all of the most sensitive regions, at the margins of the present-day monsoonal range. During the Holocene, the precipitation increases everywhere (by 100–400 mn, relative to the present-day values), the optimum being at 8.5-6.5 ka. A climatic deterioration follows with an irregular pattern of dry/wet episodes, according to the different geographic conditions. The humid phase terminates at 3.5-3 ka in the whole transitional zone.

The major southward shift of the monsoonal precipitation range since its optimum, some 8000 years ago, fits the astronomical neoglacial trend and may possibly be correlated with past stage 5d, although its rapidity and spatial importance may just reflect one of the sharp successive cold/warm variations registered by GRIP during the whole stage 5.  相似文献

The concentrations of multiple redox-sensitive elements such as Re, U, Mo, Cd, V, Sb, and Tl were determined in sediments from the southeastern Arabian Sea (9°21′N: 71°59′E) to understand the bottom water oxygenation history throughout the past 140 ka. The enrichment of redox-sensitive elements (Re, U, Cd and Sb) above average crustal abundances suggests that the Last Glacial Maxima (17.48 ka), stadials of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS)-5 (5b and 5d) and Glacial Termination (GT)-II (133 ka) were associated with suboxic bottom water conditions. Sediments deposited during these suboxic conditions show the highest Re content (up to 54 ppb normalized to a carbonate free basis) which is highly enriched over average continental crust (0.4 ppb) and these sediments appear to be the major sink for the global mass balance estimation. Marine Isotope Stages 1, 3, 4 and interstadials of MIS-5 (5a, 5c & 5e) were all associated with near-oxic conditions. Overall, the lack of enrichment of Mo and V above crustal abundance, and a high Re/Mo (ppm/ppm) ratio (avg. 18.2 × 10− 3) suggest that sediments of the southeastern Arabian Sea never contained free H2S during the last 140 ka. These changes in the bottom water oxygen content can be related to the oceanic circulation pattern during this time and in part are reflected in relationships between the timing of redox changes and paleoproductivity proxies.  相似文献

Previous studies of the olive ridley Lepidochelys olivacea population structure in the tropical eastern Pacific have indicated the existence of a single panmictic population ranging from Costa Rica to Mexico. This information has been used to design specific management measures to conserve primary nesting beaches in Mexico. However, little is known about olive ridleys in the Baja California Peninsula, their northernmost reproductive limit, where recent observations have shown differences in nesting female behaviour and size of hatchlings relative to other continental rookeries. We used mtDNA control region sequences from 137 turtles from five continental and four peninsular nesting sites to determine whether such differences correspond to a genetic distinction of Baja California olive ridleys or to phenotypic plasticity associated with the extreme environmental nesting conditions of this region. We found that genetic diversity in peninsular turtles was significantly lower than in continental nesting colonies. Analysis of molecular variance revealed a significant population structure (Phi ST = 0.048, P = 0.006) with the inclusion of peninsular samples. Our results: (i) suggest that the observed phenotypic variation may be associated with genetic differentiation and reproductive isolation; (ii) support the recent colonization of the eastern Pacific by Lepidochelys; (iii) reveal genetic signatures of historical expansion and colonization events; and (iv) significantly challenge the notion of a single genetic and conservation unit of olive ridleys in the eastern Pacific. We conclude that conservation measures for olive ridleys in Mexico should be revised to grant peninsular beaches special attention.  相似文献

We inferred the population densities of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) and short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the Northeast Pacific Ocean as functions of the water-column’s physical structure by implementing hierarchical models in a Bayesian framework. This approach allowed us to propagate the uncertainty of the field observations into the inference of species-habitat relationships and to generate spatially explicit population density predictions with reduced effects of sampling heterogeneity. Our hypothesis was that the large-scale spatial distributions of these two cetacean species respond primarily to ecological processes resulting from shoaling and outcropping of the pycnocline in regions of wind-forced upwelling and eddy-like circulation. Physically, these processes affect the thermodynamic balance of the water column, decreasing its volume and thus the height of the absolute dynamic topography (ADT). Biologically, they lead to elevated primary productivity and persistent aggregation of low-trophic-level prey. Unlike other remotely sensed variables, ADT provides information about the structure of the entire water column and it is also routinely measured at high spatial-temporal resolution by satellite altimeters with uniform global coverage. Our models provide spatially explicit population density predictions for both species, even in areas where the pycnocline shoals but does not outcrop (e.g. the Costa Rica Dome and the North Equatorial Countercurrent thermocline ridge). Interannual variations in distribution during El Niño anomalies suggest that the population density of both species decreases dramatically in the Equatorial Cold Tongue and the Costa Rica Dome, and that their distributions retract to particular areas that remain productive, such as the more oceanic waters in the central California Current System, the northern Gulf of California, the North Equatorial Countercurrent thermocline ridge, and the more southern portion of the Humboldt Current System. We posit that such reductions in available foraging habitats during climatic disturbances could incur high energetic costs on these populations, ultimately affecting individual fitness and survival.  相似文献

Live (Rose Bengal stained) and dead benthic foraminiferal communities (hard-shelled species only) from the Pakistan continental margin oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) have been studied in order to determine the relation between faunal composition and the oxygenation of bottom waters. Samples were taken from 136 m to 1870 m water depth during the intermonsoon season of 2003 (March–April). Live foraminiferal densities show a clear maximum in the first half centimetre of the sediment only few specimens are found down to 4 cm depth. The faunas exhibit a clear zonation across the Pakistan margin OMZ. Down to 500 m water depth, Uvigerina ex gr. U. semiornata and Bolivina aff. B. dilatata dominate the assemblages. These taxa are largely restricted to the upper cm of the sediment. They are adapted to the very low bottom-water oxygen values (≈ 0.1 ml/l in the OMZ core) and the extremely high input of organic carbon on the upper continental slope. The lower part of the OMZ is characterised by cosmopolitan faunas, containing also some taxa that in other areas have been described in deep infaunal microhabitats. The contrast between faunas typical for the upper part of the OMZ, and cosmopolitan faunas in the lower part of the OMZ, may be explained by a difference in the stability of dysoxic conditions over geological time periods. The core of the OMZ has been characterised by prolonged periods of stable, strongly dysoxic conditions. The lower part of the OMZ, on the contrary, has been much more variable over time-scales of 1000s and 10,000 years because of changes in surface productivity and a fluctuating intensity of NADW circulation. We suggest that, as a consequence, well-adapted, shallow infaunal taxa occupy the upper part of the OMZ, whereas in the lower part of the OMZ, cosmopolitan deep infaunal taxa have repeatedly colonised these more intermittent low oxygen environments.  相似文献

The early Late Pliocene (3.6 to ∼3.0 million years ago) is the last extended interval in Earth''s history when atmospheric CO2 concentrations were comparable to today''s and global climate was warmer. Yet a severe global glaciation during marine isotope stage (MIS) M2 interrupted this phase of global warmth ∼3.30 million years ago, and is seen as a premature attempt of the climate system to establish an ice-age world. Here we propose a conceptual model for the glaciation and deglaciation of MIS M2 based on geochemical and palynological records from five marine sediment cores along a Caribbean to eastern North Atlantic transect. Our records show that increased Pacific-to-Atlantic flow via the Central American Seaway weakened the North Atlantic Current and attendant northward heat transport prior to MIS M2. The consequent cooling of the northern high latitude oceans permitted expansion of the continental ice sheets during MIS M2, despite near-modern atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Sea level drop during this glaciation halted the inflow of Pacific water to the Atlantic via the Central American Seaway, allowing the build-up of a Caribbean Warm Pool. Once this warm pool was large enough, the Gulf Stream–North Atlantic Current system was reinvigorated, leading to significant northward heat transport that terminated the glaciation. Before and after MIS M2, heat transport via the North Atlantic Current was crucial in maintaining warm climates comparable to those predicted for the end of this century.  相似文献

The structure and diversity of bacterial communities associated with the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the eastern tropical South Pacific was studied through phylogenetic analysis. Clone libraries of 16S rRNA gene fragments were constructed using environmental DNA collected from the OMZ (60 m and 200 m), the sea surface (10 m), and the deep oxycline (450 m). At the class level, the majority of sequences affiliated to the gamma- (53.7%) and alpha-Proteobacteria (19.7%), and to the Bacteroidetes (11.2%). A vertical partitioning of the bacterial communities was observed, with main differences between the suboxic OMZ and the more oxygenated surface and deep oxycline waters. At the surface, the microbial community was predominantly characterized by SAR86, Loktanella and unclassified Flavobacteriaceae, whereas the deeper layer was dominated by Sulfitobacter and unclassified Alteromonadaceae. In the OMZ, major constituents affiliated to the marine SAR11 clade and to thiotrophic gamma-symbionts (25% of all sequences), a group not commonly found in pelagic waters. Sequences affiliating to the phylum Chloroflexi, to the AGG47 and SAR202 clades, to the delta-Proteobacteria, to the Acidobacteria, and to the 'anammox group' of the Planctomycetes were found exclusively in the OMZ. The bacterial richness in the OMZ was higher than in the oxic surface and deeper oxycline, as revealed by rarefaction analysis and the Chao1 richness estimator (surface: 45 +/- 8, deeper oxycline: 76 +/- 26; OMZ (60 m): 97 +/- 33, OMZ (200 m): 109 +/- 31). OMZ bacterial diversity indices (Fisher's: approximately 30 +/- 5, Shannon's: approximately 3.31, inverse Simpson's: approximately 20) were similar to those found in other pelagic marine environments. Thus, our results indicate a distinct and diverse bacterial community within the OMZ, with presumably novel and yet uncultivated bacterial lineages.  相似文献

Many migratory songbirds follow circuitous migratory routes instead of taking the shortest path between overwintering and breeding areas. Here, we study the migration patterns in Swainson's thrush (Catharus ustulatus), a neartic-neotropical migrant songbird, using molecular genetic approaches. This species is presently separated into genetically distinct coastal and continental populations that diverged during the Late Pleistocene (as indicated by molecular dating), yet appear to have retained ancestral patterns of migration. Low nucleotide diversity, a star-like haplotype phylogeny and unimodal mismatch distributions all support the hypothesis that both the coastal and the continental populations have undergone recent demographic expansions. Nearctic-neotropical banding and genetic data show nearly complete segregation of migratory routes and of overwintering locations: coastal populations migrate along the Pacific Coast to overwintering sites in Central America and Mexico, whereas continental populations migrate along an eastern route to overwintering sites in Panama and South America. Nearctic-neotropical banding data also show that continental birds north, northwest and east of this migratory divide fly thousands of miles east before turning south. We conclude that circuitous migration in the Swainson's thrush is an artefact of a Late Pleistocene range expansion.

At the north-western limit of the Mediterranean basin, in the Mediterranean-Oceanic transition zone, the multidisciplinary study of two palaeolakes: Villaseca and La Mata (Province of Leon), provides data on the last deglaciation. The juxtaglacial lakes were formed during a deglaciation phase of the last cold stage (Weichselian/Würm) estimated, from the regional and Pyrenean chronological data, between circa 48 ka and 32 ka (ka: 1000 years ago). Their drainage occurred circa 17 ka and 15 ka respectively, during the definitive glacial retreat phases. These results provide evidence for a glacial maximum extension preceding the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and an early deglaciation. Comparisons with the Pyrenean data show that in the most important glacial basins of the Pyrenean-Cantabrian range, glaciers were still present at middle elevation circa 18-20 ka. The final deglaciation did not happen until around 16 ka.During the period 48-13.3 ka, along the Pyrenean-Cantabrian range, three stages can be distinguished in the deglacial processes. Between circa 48 and 32 ka, the deglacial retreats were contemporaneous with D-O events 12 to 6. Between circa 32 ka and 18 ka, major sedimentary modifications were rare. Two of them are synchronous with D-O 4 and 3. A glacial readvance also occurred during this period along the Pyrenean-Cantabrian range. Between 18 and 17 ka, major sedimentary changes and an increase in the δ18O records of the NGRIP ice-core record are synchronous. Between 15 and 13.3 ka, glacial retreats and sedimentary changes are synchronous with the climatic improvement observed from the end of the Oldest Dryas to the end of the Bölling-Alleröd period. These correspondencies suggest relationships between the deglacial processes in the western Mediterranean and the palaeoenvironmental events in the North Atlantic region during the last Glacial-Interglacial transition. During the Full Glacial period, the pollen data indicates dominant steppic environments. The Oldest Dryas was not a constant cooling phase and from around 15.5 ka, the pollen data indicates a slight warming. During the Holocene, until circa 2040 cal BP, mixed oak forests developed and pine was a prominent component of the Cantabrian landscape. Then the forests were destroyed due to mining, agriculture and fire, and this favoured the extension of heathland.  相似文献

The palaeoceanographic evolution of the Levantine waters during the last deglacial time is investigated using the sedimentary record of a deep sea core, CS 70-5, from the Linosa basin (35° 44.4′N/13° 11.0′E, 1486 m water depth). Radiocarbon dating and oxygen isotope stratigraphy based on18O changes inGlobigerina bulloides allow us to recognize and to date the different steps of the deglaciation. These steps are synchronous with those reported in the North Atlantic, but correspond to a δ18O decrease of higher amplitude than in the Alboran sea or in the North Atlantic Ocean. Major faunal events permit the establishment of a local biozonation which differs from those reported either for the Alboran sea or the Eastern Mediterranean basin. Major breaks in the faunal assemblages occurred during Termination IA, within the first step of the deglaciation around 14 kyr B.P., and near 10.6 kyr B.P. within the Younger Dryas. The onset of the last deglaciation induced important changes in the characteristics of the Levantine and Atlantic water masses which occupied the Strait of Sicily. The δ13C records ofGlobigerina bulloides andCibicidoides pachyderma indicate that the modifications observed in the assemblages of deep faunas are controlled by the oxygenation of the water column. δ13C records ofGlobigerina bulloides are similar throughout the West Mediterranean as well as in sediments located below the present Mediterranean outflow. The distributional pattern as well as its δ13C record suggest that this species could be a good recorder of the upper Levantine waters and, more precisely, of the mixing layer of the overlying Atlantic waters with the Levantine ones.Major influxes of Atlantic waters during Terminations IA and IB could have slowed down the vertical mixing of the different water layers present in the Strait of Sicily and caused a decrease in the oxygenation of the water column. During Termination IB the effect of Atlantic influxes was reinforced by the occurrence of a low salinity layer in the eastern basin which led to the stagnation of the deep waters. The two episodes of decreased oxygenation in the Levantine waters also favored the precipitation of inorganic magnesium calcite.  相似文献

A continental-scale model of Holocene Australian hunter-gatherer demography and mobility is generated using radiocarbon data and geospatial techniques. Results show a delayed expansion and settlement of much of Australia following the termination of the late Pleistocene until after 9,000 years ago (or 9ka). The onset of the Holocene climatic optimum (9-6ka) coincides with rapid expansion, growth and establishment of regional populations across ~75% of Australia, including much of the arid zone. This diffusion from isolated Pleistocene refugia provides a mechanism for the synchronous spread of pan-continental archaeological and linguistic attributes at this time (e.g. Pama-Nyungan language, Panaramitee art style, backed artefacts). We argue longer patch residence times were possible at the end of the optimum, resulting in a shift to more sedentary lifestyles and establishment of low-level food production in some parts of the continent. The onset of El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO; 4.5-2ka) restricted low-level food production, and resulted in population fragmentation, abandonment of marginal areas, and reduction in ranging territory of ~26%. Importantly, climate amelioration brought about by more pervasive La Niña conditions (post-2ka), resulted in an intensification of the mobility strategies and technological innovations that were developed in the early- to mid-Holocene. These changes resulted in population expansion and utilization of the entire continent. We propose that it was under these demographically packed conditions that the complex social and religious societies observed at colonial contact were formed.  相似文献
