Recruitment of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Muller) was monitored for four successive years following a mass mortality of this species on a subtidal boulder bottom in St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia. Recently recruited juveniles (1–2 mm diameter) were observed in the fall (September–November) between (1982) and (1984), but not in (1985). Juveniles grew to 6–8 mm diameter at 1-yr post-settlement and 19 mm diameter ((1983) cohort) at 2-yr post-settlement. Individuals > 18 mm diameter had macroscopic gonads in the spring of their third year and spawning probably occurred at 2.75-yr post-settlement. The growth rate of juveniles (3–6 mm initial diameter) maintained in cages with coralline-covered rocks was similar to that of the natural population. Growth and gonad index increased significantly when kelp (Laminaria longicruris (Pylaie)) was added to cages, suggesting that juveniles were food limited in St. Margaret's Bay. Despite an abundance of kelp and other fleshy algae, they remained cryptic under rocks and were not observed grazing on attached plants. The effects of temperature and food supply on juvenile growth and survival were examined in laboratory experiments using factorial designs. Recently-metamorphosed juveniles (from laboratory cultures), maintained at three temperature regimes (5°C, ambient, 16 °C) and two feeding regimes (no added food, coralline algae added), had similar growth rates (over 9 mth) among treatment combinations. However, growth was asymptotic at 16 °C and ambient temperatures, suggesting food limitation. Survival of these juveniles was higher in treatments with coralline algae, but survival was not affected by temperature. Field-collected juveniles (3–6 mm diameter), maintained at three temperature regimes (5°C, ambient, 16 °C) and three feeding regimes (no added food, coralline algae added, and kelp and coralline algae added), grew only in treatments with kelp added as food. In these treatments, growth rates increased with temperature. However, the growth curve at variable ambient temperature regimes was linear, suggesting seasonal acclimation. Survival of the field-collected juveniles was highest in treatments at 5 °C and/or with added kelp.  相似文献

In an intensively sampled English hop garden, cysts of Heterodera humuli were found in every sample taken. Most occurred in the top 15 cm of soil, decreasing in number by half with every 15 cm in depth. Numbers of second-stage juveniles fluctuated during the vegetative period in a pattern which indicated that more than one generation, possibly two to three, were produced. The generation time was about 1.5 months. In pot experiments under controlled conditions (20°C; 16 h light/day) the life cycle lasted 40 days. The optimal temperature was 20°C for the development of H. humuli in the roots of its host Humulus lupulus. Most H. humuli juveniles invaded hop roots at 15°C, but egg hatch was greatest at 20°C. In moist soil, second-stage juveniles survived for at least 54 days and thereafter invaded roots and reproduced.  相似文献

Reef-building (or hermatypic) corals live in mutualistic symbiosis with the dinoflagellates Symbiodinium spp. (Alveolata, Dinophyceae, Gymnodiniales), and contribute to the accretion of coral reefs. Due to the difficulty in culturing them in laboratories, these ecologically important cnidarians have not been characterized extensively in physiological, biochemical, molecular and toxicological experiments. The present study was conducted to develop a model symbiosis system for long-term experimental analyses of a symbiotic coral. Aposymbiotic (symbiont-free) juveniles of the hermatypic coral Acropora tenuis were infected with three Symbiodinium strains, and the resulting symbiotic corals were examined for growth and maintenance of the symbiosis for approx. three months. Of the tested Symbiodinium cell lines, CCMP2467 (clade A1) inhabited the host the most densely, and the population in hospite did not decline over the period of three months in laboratory culture. The CCMP2467-inhabited juveniles outgrew the populations infected with the other two strains and aposymbiotic specimens. The A. tenuis juveniles in symbiosis with CCMP2467 cells were used in eco-toxicological tests to study long-term effects of two commonly used biocides (tributyltin-chloride and diuron). Delay in growth was observed after exposing the symbiotic juveniles to the two chemicals for approx. 50 days at the nominal concentrations of 0.4 and 1 μg/L, respectively.  相似文献

Cape Vultures were observed during their post-fledging dependence period at a colony in the Cape Province, South Africa. Information is presented on the length of the period, behaviour of juveniles and of parents at the nest, survival of juveniles, aggressive interactions between parents and juveniles and retention of the nest site following breeding. At the colony, juveniles initiate contact with their parents, which supply food to their own offspring at the natal site only. Parental aggression was observed over an average period of five months after juveniles had left the nest (range 32–218 days); at two nest sites, the period overlapped with the next season's incubation period, although no transfer of food was observed during this period-of overlap.  相似文献

A small population of Flightless Cormorants was followed from 1970 to 1975 inclusive. The birds were extremely sedentary, most never moving more than 2 km from where hatched. Many birds bred several times within a year, almost always with different mates. After successful breeding the mean interval to the next attempt among females was significantly shorter than among males, probably because the male continued to attend the juvenile for longer than did the female. There was an annual peak of nesting in April to November, when sea temperatures were lowest; some nesting occurred in other months but these nests were less successful. About 73% of juveniles survived at least three months after going to sea. Adult females had a significantly higher rate of annual survival (91%) than did males (82%). The mean annual survival of both sexes combined over a 13 year period was 87%. The mean age of first breeding was about 30 months for both males and females. In 1972 breeding success (0·14 young fledged per pair) was much lower than in other years (0·60 young per pair), a lower proportion of juveniles survived, no birds bred for the first time and probably many fewer pairs nested. Adult survival was not affected. This reduced breeding output was associated with an influx of anomalously warm sea water to the area (El Niño). The availability of food is probably both the ultimate and the proximate factor controlling the timing of breeding.  相似文献

Early learning about edible food in the environment is a critical survival task for young nonhuman primates. Social learning and social facilitation are often cited to explain how youngsters learn to select and find their food. In this framework, we observed eight mother-youngster pairs of free-ranging Japanese macaques divided into two sets according to the age of the young (infants aged between 7 and 12 months and juveniles aged between 1.5 and 2 years) during three winter months. We systematically investigated the intensive observation directed by the youngsters toward elders by recording the target's identity (e.g. mother, subadult), the items manipulated by the elder and those items closely observed by the youngster, along with the behavior of the youngster preceding and immediately following an intensive observation period. The diet of the mothers and juveniles was estimated from time records of each feeding occurrence for each food item (identified to species level) and from the quantity of fresh matter ingested. The results show that intensive observation by both infants and juveniles were directed toward those elders engaged in plant and invertebrate foraging. Such behavior was age-dependent, being more frequent in infants than in juveniles. The majority of the intensive observations were directed toward the mother. Intensive observations also shaped a change in the behavior of infants by significantly stimulating the investigation of food items and locations otherwise not investigated by juveniles. Moreover, infants showed a particular interest in rare food items and especially invertebrates. Age differences between the two sets of young and their interest in rare foods are discussed with reference to the occurrence of intensive observation within the framework of kin relationships, social organization, and social transmission of information about food type and food location and its survival values.  相似文献

利用剖胃法对采自内蒙古自治区鄂尔多斯库布齐沙漠的草原沙蜥(Phrynocephalus frontalis)进行食性分析研究。结果表明,该地区的草原沙蜥在8~9月间,以昆虫类动物为主要食物,占全部食物的95.8%。不同性别草原沙蜥取食的食物种类差异不显著,雌雄个体的食物百分率相似性指数及营养生态位重叠值均较大,雄性的食物多样性指数(IFD)及营养生态位宽度(BTN)均大于雌性。成体和亚成体之间以及亚成体和幼体之间食物种类存在差异但不显著,而成体和幼体间的食物种类差异极显著,不同年龄草原沙蜥的食物百分率相似性指数较小,IFD值与BTN值均是成体最大,幼体最小。总有益系数、不同性别的有益系数分别为V总=22.44%,V雌=12.76%,V雄=9.83%,草原沙蜥是对荒漠化草原有益的类群。  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, was investigated within three intertidal mussel beds along Ninety Mile Beach, northern New Zealand, between August 2000 and March 2001. Adult mussels of different sizes (45-105 mm in shell length) were collected from the intertidal sites about 30 min after being submerged by the incoming tide for gut content analyses. Results of these analyses indicate that mussels consume a variety of phytoplankton, micro- and mesozooplankton, including mussel larvae and post-larvae. Cannibalism of juveniles of up to 620 μm was recorded for intertidal mussels, and conspecifics of up to 2.4 mm were found within the stomachs of additional mussels collected in August 2000 from a nearby subtidal site. For all three intertidal populations, mussel larvae and juveniles contribute about 70% of the food particle consumption during the spawning peak in August, while phytoplankton and other zooplankton constitute the majority of the food source (about 99%) in March, during gametogenesis. Larger intertidal mussels tended to have more food particles in their stomachs than smaller mussels within all three populations. Distinctive differences in food consumption among intertidal populations directly coincide with variations in total particulate matter (TPM), particulate organic matter (POM) and percent organic matter (OM) in the adjacent seawater.Separate experiments designed to test the feeding behavior of mussels feeding at different times during the incoming tide were conducted at one of the intertidal sites during August 2000 and March 2001. Results from these experiments indicate a marked shift in food consumption from bivalves to other mesozooplankton in August, and from phytoplankton to mesozooplankton in March. The observed combination of mussel predatory and grazing behavior over the incoming tide and through the year provides evidence for a strong food-web link between the benthic and pelagic life stages of this species. Furthermore, the high rate of cannibalism during some months of the year suggests that this source of food may significantly contribute to the energy budget of wild populations, with potential implications for evolutionary adaptive success.  相似文献

The tendency of juvenile and adult field-trapped Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) to exhibit self-induced food deprivation in response to changes in their living environment was studied after different periods of residency in the laboratory environment. Self-imposed food deprivation resulting from the forced occupation of a novel environment (activity wheels) was greater for those animals tested immediately upon capture and after 25 weeks in captivity than for rats in captivity for 4 weeks. The deprivation response of juveniles was less than for adults immediately following capture but after 25 weeks in captivity the responses of the two age groups were similar. Deprivation responses following reintroduction to the home cage environment diminished over time in captivity. Wheel-running by adults was greatest immediately following capture whereas juveniles continued to show relatively high levels of wheel-running at 4 weeks in captivity. The results are discussed in terms of habituation to the laboratory environment and time-dependent changes in response to novelty.  相似文献

The locomotor activity rhythms were examined by using an actograph with infra-red photo-electric switches for two species of wrasses, (Halichoeres tenuispinnis andPteragogus flagellifera) under various light conditions. InH. tenuispinnis, the locomotor activity of almost all fish under light-dark cycle regimen (LD12:12; 06:00–18:00 light, 18:00–06:00 dark) commenced somewhat earlier than the beginning of light period and continued till somewhat earlier than the beginning of the dark period. This species clearly showed free-running activity rhythms under both constant illumination (LL) and constant darkness (DD). Therefore,H. tenuispinnis appeared to have a circadian rhythm. The length of the circadian period ranged from 23 hr. 30 min. to 23 hr. 44 min. under LL, and was from 23 hr. 39 min. to 24 hr. 18 min. under DD. On the other hand, the locomotor activity ofP. flagellifera occurred mostly in the light period under LD 12:12. The activity of this species continued through LL, but was greatly suppressed in DD, so that none of the fish had any activity rhythm in both constant conditions. It was known from field observations thatH. tenuispinnis burrowed and lay in sandy bottoms, whileP. flagellifera hid and rested in bases of seagrasses and shallow crevices of rocks during the night. In the present two wrasses, it seemed that the above-mentioned difference of noctural behavior was closely related to the intensity of the endogenous factor in the activity rhythm.  相似文献

2008年6月份至2009年5月份对吐鲁番沙虎的巢域进行调查:2008年6月份至2008年8月份为繁殖季节(RS),2008年9月份至2009年5月份(冬眠期除外)为非繁殖季节(NRS)。利用截趾标志重捕法研究吐鲁番沙虎的巢域,共标记283只吐鲁番沙虎,累计繁殖季节24只,非繁殖季节43只重捕超过3次(其中13只个体在繁殖季节和非繁殖季节均够3次以上捕捉次数,为重复个体),可以用于计算个体巢域面积数据。利用软件MapGis计算最小凸多边形法(MCP)巢域面积,并分析性别、体型大小、季节等因素对巢域的影响。结果表明:吐鲁番沙虎非繁殖季节雄性、雌性与幼体各组间的巢域面积差异均显著,繁殖季节巢域面积差异不显著;雌雄个体不同季节或全年合并比较巢域面积差异性均不显著;非繁殖季节面积与吻肛长(SVL)显著相关、全年成体组的巢域面积与吻肛长显著相关;成体巢域面积季节差异显著(U=41,P=0.046),幼体则没有季节差异(U=159,P=0.537)。因而,吐鲁番沙虎的巢域大小受性别因素影响不大,体型大小对巢域面积有显著影响,由于繁殖、食物资源等的季节变化是影响吐鲁番沙虎巢域最重要的因素。  相似文献

We quantified the behavior of juvenile pine voles (Microtuspinetorum) in families maintained in outdoor enclosures protectedfrom rain and predators and determined the effects of numberof juveniles present (0–3) on their younger siblings andtheir parents. Juveniles exhibited behaviors characteristicof helpers in cooperative breeding species: brooding, grooming,and retrieving younger siblings, and maintaining nests, runways,and food caches. The number of juveniles had no effect on weights,growth rates, or survival of younger siblings or on survivalof parents, but families with three juveniles had shorter interlitterintervals than other families. There was a trend toward lowerweights for younger siblings when juveniles continued to nursefrom their mothers. Juveniles brooded and groomed younger siblingsmore when their mothers were absent than when mothers were present.In families with juveniles, younger siblings were alone significandyless often than in families without juveniles, but number ofjuveniles in the family had little effect on duration or frequencywith which juveniles brooded or groomed younger siblings. Thesedata are consistent with cooperative breeding having evolvedvia individual selection for delayed dispersal. We argue thatthe limited availability of vacant tunnel systems and the highcost of digging new tunnel systems constrains dispersal in pinevoles and has led to the evolution of cooperative breeding.  相似文献

The sacoglossan sea slug, Plakobranchus ocellatus, is a so-called long-term retention form that incorporates chloroplasts for several months and thus is able to starve while maintaining photosynthetic activity. Little is known regarding the taxonomy and food sources of this sacoglossan, but it is suggested that P. ocellatus is a species complex and feeds on a broad variety of Ulvophyceae. In particular, we analysed specimens from the Philippines and starved them under various light conditions (high light, low light and darkness) and identified the species of algal food sources depending on starvation time and light treatment by means of DNA-barcoding using for the first time the combination of two algal chloroplast markers, rbcL and tufA. Comparison of available CO1 and 16S sequences of specimens from various localities indicate a species complex with likely four distinct clades, but food analyses do not indicate an ecological separation of the investigated clades into differing foraging strategies. The combined results from both algal markers suggest that, in general, P. ocellatus has a broad food spectrum, including members of the genera Halimeda, Caulerpa, Udotea, Acetabularia and further unidentified algae, with an emphasis on H. macroloba. Independent of the duration of starvation and light exposure, this algal species and a further unidentified Halimeda species seem to be the main food source of P. ocellatus from the Philippines. It is shown here that at least two (or possibly three) barcode markers are required to cover the entire food spectrum in future analyses of Sacoglossa.  相似文献

The use of juvenile Artemia as feed in aquaculture and in the pet shop industry has been getting more attention during the last decade. In this study, the use of selected bacterial strains to improve the nutritional value of dry food for Artemia juveniles and to obtain control of the associated microbial community was examined. Nine bacterial strains were selected based on their positive effects on survival and/or growth of Artemia juveniles under monoxenic culture conditions, while other strains caused no significant effect, significantly lower rates of survival and/or growth, or even total mortality of the Artemia. The nine selected strains were used to preemptively colonize the culture water of Artemia juveniles. Xenic culture of Artemia under suboptimal conditions yielded better survival and/or growth rates when they were grown in the preemptively colonized culture medium than when grown in autoclaved seawater. The preemptive colonization of the culture water had a drastic influence on the microbial communities that developed in the culture water or that were associated with the Artemia, as determined with Biolog GN community-level physiological profiles. Chemotaxonomical characterization based on fatty acid methyl ester analysis of bacterial isolates recovered from the culture tanks was performed, and a comparison with the initially introduced strains was made. Finally, several modes of action for the beneficial effect of the bacterial strains are proposed.  相似文献

Slipper limpets use different ciliary feeding mechanisms as larvae and adults. Veliger larvae of Crepidula fornicata developed part of the adult feeding apparatus, including ctenidial filaments, neck lobe, and radula, before metamorphosis, but ctenidial feeding did not begin until well after loss of the larval feeding apparatus (velum) at metamorphosis. Earlier initiation of ctenidial feeding by individuals that were older larvae when metamorphosis occurred suggests continued development toward ctenidial feeding during delay of metamorphosis. Early juveniles produced a ciliary current through the mantle cavity and moved the radula in a grasping action before they began to capture algal cells on mucous strands or form a food cord. Either early juveniles could not yet form mucous strands or they delayed their production until development of other necessary structures. The neck canal for transporting food from ctenidium to mouth cannot develop before velar loss. In their first feeding, juveniles fed much like the adults except that the neck canal was less developed and the path of the food cord toward the mouth sometimes varied. As suspension feeders, calyptraeids lack the elaborations of foregut that complicate transition to juvenile feeding for many caenogastropods, but a path for the food cord must develop after velar loss. Why individuals can initiate ctenidial feeding sooner when they are older at metamorphosis is not yet known. The juveniles became sedentary soon after metamorphosis and were not observed to feed by scraping the substratum with the radula, in contrast to the first feeding by juveniles of another calyptraeid species, observed by Montiel et al. A total of 7,000 larval and juvenilePlecoglossus altivelis was collected at semimonthly intervals with a small seine in a surf zone of Tei beach facing Tosa Bay during the period of June 1982 to May 1983. They occurred in the surf zone from middle October to middle May. About 500 larvae and juveniles (10.9–59.9 mm TL) were used to examine their feeding habit. The feeding incidences by collection dates fluctuated from 0 to 100%, with 90.6% in total incidence. They fed mainly on copepods (e.g.Paracalanus parvus andOithona spp.) throughout postlarval and juvenile stages, while they first took small benthic animals at 53.0 mm TL. Their food compositions were influenced fundamentally by the planktonic fauna of the surf zone, but larvae under 20 mm TL tended to take relatively larger copepods.  相似文献

Synopsis Use of a radiographic technique enabled the study of prey selection and individual specialization in Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, fed with small charr and dry pellets under laboratory conditions. Both naive and experienced fish (mean weight 475 g, mean length 34.9 cm), selected the smallest individuals when offered juvenile charr (6–16 cm) as prey. The selected prey were, on average, 22% of the predator length. Cannibalism appeared to involve individual specialization, since when groups of large charr were given the opportunity to feed on juveniles one day every two weeks, the same individuals were cannibalistic throughout the sampling period of two months. When large charr were presented with alternate cycles of different food types consisting of dry pellets and fish prey, the charr exhibited a strong and consistent feeding specialization with three distinct groups being recognised: cannibals, pellet eaters and non-feeding fish.  相似文献

Hemimysis anomala is a near-shore mysid native to the Ponto-Caspian region that was discovered to have invaded Great Lakes ecosystems in 2006. We investigated feeding rates and prey preferences of adult and juvenile Hemimysis in laboratory experiments to gain insight on the potential for Hemimysis to disrupt food webs. For both age groups (AGs), we measured feeding rates as a function of prey abundance (Bosmina longirostris as prey), prey type (B. longirostris, Daphnia pulex, and Mesocyclops sp.), and light levels (no light and dim light). Mean feeding rates on Bosmina increased with prey density and reached 23 ind. (2 h)?1 for adults and 17 ind. (2 h)?1 for juveniles. Dim light had little effect on prey selection or feeding rate compared to complete darkness. When feeding rates on alternate prey were compared, both AGs fed at higher rates on Bosmina than Daphnia, but only juveniles fed at significantly higher rates on Bosmina relative to Mesocyclops. No significant differences were observed between feeding rates on Mesocyclops and on Daphnia. Hemimysis feeding rates were on the order of 30–60% of their body weight per day, similar to predatory cladocerans that have been implicated in zooplankton declines in Lakes Huron and Ontario.  相似文献

There is considerable global interest in rebuilding depleted populations of sea cucumbers (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea) to address conservation and economic goals. For the vast majority of holothurian species, the habitat and food requirements of the juvenile stage are poorly understood. We investigated the distribution and microhabitat associations of juveniles of a commercially important sea cucumber, Stichopus cf. horrens, in the shallow, shoreward side of a coral reef (or backreef) in northern Philippines (16°21′38.7″N, 119°59′47.9″E). Relationships between juvenile density and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of their habitat were examined. Potential food sources of the juveniles were also investigated using elemental and stable isotope analysis. Results showed that juveniles are more abundant in seagrass areas and the transition zone between seagrass and the rubble-dominated reef flat. A non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) plot indicated that juvenile density was most positively associated with coarser sand and rubble (>0.5 mm) and seagrass (Thalassia hemprichii) abundance (2D stress = 0.11). Juvenile density was also positively associated with sediment organic matter from plant detritus to a lesser extent. Elemental and isotope analysis of one site indicated that epiphytes were the primary food source of juveniles, while sediment detritus from microalgae and seagrass was a secondary food source. This study corroborates anecdotal evidence regarding the importance of seagrass to S. cf. horrens as potential refugia and source of high-quality food for its juveniles. These findings underscore the need to protect the nursery habitats of wild juveniles and provide critical information for the selection of suitable natural habitats for releasing cultured juveniles of this important species.  相似文献
