The fiddler crab Uca panamensis (Stimpson, 1959) inhabits rocky shores. We examined its preference for feeding substratum—sand or rock—and its manner of feeding. The crab made its burrow in the sand among rocks but preferred to feed on rocks. The feeding time decreased as the distance between the burrow and the rock increased. We consider this to be a result of exclusive interaction among the crabs because they defended their feeding area on the rocks against others.The crab wetted a small area of rock with water held in the branchial chambers before and during feeding. It pinched up the wetted surface in the minor chelipeds, which have bundles of setae on the posterior tips of the dactyl and pollex, and put the material into its buccal cavity. It never expelled sand pellets while feeding on rock, which indicates that it swallowed the food particles directly, without sorting. The bundles of setae retained water by capillary attraction, which suggests that they capture the suspended fine food particles scraped from the rock. The wetting action may prevent the fine materials from dispersing. We consider that morphological alteration of the minor chelipeds, the application of water from the branchial chambers, and direct swallowing permit the fiddler crab to feed on fine materials attached to rocks.  相似文献

The active ingestion of xylem sap by aphids is hypothesised to be an important mechanism for rehydration. When starved bird cherry-oat aphids (Rhopalosiphum padi) were allowed to feed on wheat (Triticum aestivum) treated with a sublethal dose of the xylem-mobile neonicotinoid thiamethoxam, analysis of feeding behaviours using the electrical penetration graph revealed a reduction in xylem feeding that was reversed on removal of the toxin. To test the importance of xylem-feeding behaviour as a rehydration mechanism, the effects of the sublethal dose of thiamethoxam on aphid water content, honeydew excretion, growth and fecundity were investigated. Body water contents of starved R. padi feeding on wheat treated with thiamethoxam were significantly reduced compared to aphids feeding on wheat treated with distilled water (74.5 ± 0.23 and 75.6 ± 0.18%, respectively). In addition, the sublethal dose of thiamethoxam had detrimental effects on aphid performance. At reproductive maturity, aphids that had been born on wheat treated with thiamethoxam were significantly smaller (as measured by body plan area; 1.07 ± 0.03 mm2), lighter (0.31 ± 0.04 mg) and less fecund (2.85 ± 0.36 nymphs/day) than aphids born on wheat treated with distilled water (1.87 ± 0.02 mm2, 0.72 ± 0.03 mg, 11.28 ± 0.58 nymphs/day, respectively). Regardless of whether the observed impairment of xylem feeding is due to a neurotoxic or an antifeedant effect, these results have important implications for commercial crop protection as the behaviour-modifying effects of the sublethal dose of thiamethoxam may change the efficacy of this pesticide throughout the growing season.  相似文献

Feeding behavior in the species of captive chondrichthyans is studied to clarify the functional mechanisms responsible for feeding ecology. Kinematics and pressure in the buccal, hyoid and pharyngeal regions were quantified in Squalus acanthias, Chiloscyllium plagiosum and Leucoraja erinacea using sonomicrometry and pressure transducers. Means and coefficients of variation were analyzed by species and by behavior to test for stereotypy and flexibility in the feeding mechanism. Several instances of mechanical stereotypy as well as flexibility were found in the feeding kinematics and pressure of the three chondrichthyan species. In general, Squalus acanthias shows more stereotyped feeding behavior than C. plagiosum and L. erinacea. Different aspects of feeding behavior stand out among the three species. Chiloscyllium plagiosum generates lowest pressures, S. acanthias achieves the greatest area changes, and L. erinacea has longer durations for manipulating prey. Capture events are functionally and behaviorally stereotyped while processing events are functionally and behaviorally flexible with the ability to use suction or compression to process the same food item. Squalus acanthias is a functional specialist and C. plagiosum is functionally a generalist, with both species exhibiting behavioral flexibility. Leucoraja erinacea is a functional and behavioral generalist. Using functional morphology to explain mechanical stereotypy and flexibility in the feeding behavior of three suction feeding chondrichthyan species has allowed a better understanding of specialist and generalist trophic behaviors.  相似文献

BackgroundAedes aegypti mosquitoes are globally distributed vectors of viruses that impact the health of hundreds of millions of people annually. Mating and blood feeding represent fundamental aspects of mosquito life history that carry important implications for vectorial capacity and for control strategies. Females transmit pathogens to vertebrate hosts and obtain essential nutrients for eggs during blood feeding. Further, because host-seeking Ae. aegypti females mate with males swarming near hosts, biological crosstalk between these behaviors could be important. Although mating influences nutritional intake in other insects, prior studies examining mating effects on mosquito blood feeding have yielded conflicting results.Methodology/Principal findingsTo resolve these discrepancies, we examined blood-feeding physiology and behavior in virgin and mated females and in virgins injected with male accessory gland extracts (MAG), which induce post-mating changes in female behavior. We controlled adult nutritional status prior to blood feeding by using water- and sugar-fed controls. Our data show that neither mating nor injection with MAG affect Ae. aegypti blood intake, digestion, or feeding avidity for an initial blood meal. However, sugar feeding, a common supplement in laboratory settings but relatively rare in nature, significantly affected all aspects of feeding and may have contributed to conflicting results among previous studies. Further, mating, MAG injection, and sugar intake induced declines in subsequent feedings after an initial blood meal, correlating with egg production and laying. Taking our evaluation to the field, virgin and mated mosquitoes collected in Colombia were equally likely to contain blood at the time of collection.Conclusions/SignificanceMating, MAG, and sugar feeding impact a mosquito’s estimated ability to transmit pathogens through both direct and indirect effects on multiple aspects of mosquito biology. Our results highlight the need to consider natural mosquito ecology, including diet, when assessing their physiology and behavior in the laboratory.  相似文献

Opioid peptides have been implicated in regulation of feeding in invertebrates. Studies have suggested that receptors for opioids are present in cockroaches and that these receptors play roles in affecting both behaviour and feeding. We examined the effect of µ, δ, and κ opioid receptor agonists and antagonists on feeding, mass changes and activity in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana. The κ antagonist, nor-binaltorphimine, significantly increased food intake, while naltrexone (general antagonist) and naloxonazine (µ antagonist) both reduced feeding. A large mass loss was observed in cockroaches treated with nor-binaltorphimine, despite the increased food intake. Males did not lose as much mass during the 3 h as females, although drug treatment did have some effect on the loss. Time of activity (%) was not influenced by any drug. Water loss experiments suggested that nor-binaltorphimine increased water loss, accounting for the mass loss despite the increased feeding. We suggest that two populations of opioid receptors are present as previously reported, with one affecting feeding and the other involved with evaporative water loss.  相似文献

Dermal glands (sensilla sagittiformia) secrete when brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, are mechanically disturbed, presumably as a defensive mechanism. Recently, we observed that these glands secrete due to the pressure stimulation of engorgement. In this study, we examine how dermal gland secretion alters the physiology of R. sanguineus, particularly if this secretion is an important mechanism during blood feeding. The ability of ticks to retain water was not modified by dermal gland secretion, but heat tolerance was enhanced. Short-term heat shock was improved slightly (1 h at 50 °C to 1 h at 56 °C) and featured reduced injury responses and greater recovery after heat shock. When exposed to their host body temperature (37 °C) for prolonged periods, individuals that had secreted survived over 1 week longer than individuals that did not secrete. Dorsal application of squalene, the main component of dermal gland secretion, did not increase temperature tolerance, suggesting that the act of secreting rather than the physical properties of the secretion itself is responsible for the increase in heat tolerance. Based on our results, dermal gland secretion may be an essential mechanism in certain tick species (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, but not Ixodes) for tolerating body temperature and not succumbing to heat stress during the extended time periods of feeding on a mammalian host, serving as a mechanism to prevent heat damage from the host during feeding.  相似文献

Comparative study of the taste attractiveness of different aquatic invertebrates (daphnids Daphnia longispina and D. pulex, larvae of Chironomidae, whirligig Gyrinus marinus, water skaters Gerris spp.) and plants (duckweed Lemna minor, filamentous alga Cladophora sp.) for roach Rutilus rutilus, bitterling Rhodeus sericeus amarus, and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss has been performed. Roach’s taste preferences for agar-agar pellets, containing the aqueous extracts of the organisms under study, varies from maximum (daphnids, filamentous alga, larvae of chironomids) to minimum (duckweed) or it can be absent (whirligig). Different taste preferences to pellets containing the extracts of aquatic organisms has been also found in bitterling (daphnids, larvae of chironomids, water skaters) but not in rainbow trout (daphnids, water skaters). It has been suggested that whirligigs and water skaters do not contain any deterrent substances ensuring chemical defense from predators. It has been demonstrated that intraoral gustatory reception of food items follows two alternative behavioral stereotypes that are different from each other in the time during which food items are retained in the oral cavity and the number of manipulations (subsequent grasps of a food item) during the perception process. We discuss the importance of gustatory reception as the major sensory mechanism that ensures feeding selectivity of fish and decreases interspecific competition over food.  相似文献

A mechanism of generating passive feeding flow for the Devonian spiriferide brachiopod Paraspirifer bownockeri was theoretically elucidated through fluid dynamics simulations for flow around rigid shells. The RANS equations were used as a turbulence model, and the unsteady incompressible flow was solved using the finite volume method. Two directions of ventral and dorsal flows were investigated as typical cases where little exchange flow occurs inside the shells. The digital model of the shell was constructed using image processing of X-ray CT images of a shell replica made by molding a polycarbonate plate to a well-preserved fossil specimen of Paraspirifer. To examine the effect of flow velocity, three conditions of ambient flow velocity were adopted for both the ventral and dorsal flows. The pressure distribution along the gape showed that a relatively high pressure occurred around the sulcus in all simulated cases. This high pressure generated inflow from the sulcus and subsequent spiral internal flow, especially in fast ambient flows. This means that the sulcus generated the considerable pressure gradient around the gape passively and generated the stable intake of seawater and a spiral flow of water inside the shell for feeding. We conclude that the shell form of certain spiriferides could generate spiral flows so as to promote passive feeding, and the sulcus is interpreted as an important form for the passive intake of water.  相似文献

Primates often modify dietary composition in relation to seasonal changes in food availability or climate conditions. We studied the feeding patterns of a troop of common brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus), a semi-frugivorous strepsirhine, in a dry forest in northwestern Madagascar. To understand the mechanism of dietary modification, we recorded daily feeding times of diet items during 101 full-day observations over 1 year, and then conducted a linear model analysis to examine the effects of fruiting tree density in the forest, daily ambient temperature, and weekly rainfall (index of water retained in the forest) on the lemurs' daily feeding time. The lemurs spent dramatically more time on leaf-eating as well as total feeding time, and less time on fruit-eating during the late dry season (total 152 min/day, frugivory 56 min/day, folivory 77 min/day), as compared with other seasons when the diet was highly frugivorous (total 96 min/day, frugivory 81 min/day, folivory 8 min/day). Folivory increased as temperatures rose under the condition of low weekly rainfall, whereas frugivory was unrelated to fruiting tree density. Most (97.4 %) diurnal folivory during the late dry season was spent consuming Lissochilus rutenbergianus, chewing the succulent leaves and licking the juice. Because the nutritional analysis showed that L. rutenbergianus is rich in water (80.1 % of fresh weight) but poor in protein and nonstructural carbohydrates, its increased use was probably for rehydration. We conducted 13 full-night observations, because brown lemurs increase nocturnal activities during the dry season. At nighttime, the lemurs tended to spend more time eating fruit in the late dry season (32 min/night) than in the early dry season (14 min/night), and never consumed Lrutenbergianus. Fruits rich in nonstructural carbohydrates can be energy sources for Eulemur. They likely engaged in additional nocturnal frugivory for energy compensation. Brown lemurs have a flexible strategy of modifying their diet and feeding activities to cope with environmental stresses.  相似文献

Although host preferences in phytophagous insects may be generated by several factors, few studies have simultaneously examined several potential host choice determinants. In this study we tested the impact of the following potential host choice determinants on host preference of the semi-aquatic lepidopteran Munroessa gyralis (Pyralidae): growth on different host plants; protein content, polyphenolic content, toughness, and chemical extracts of different host plants; prior feeding experience; and predation pressure on the caterpillar by fishes. Two water lilies, Brasenia schreberi and Nymphaea odorata, were preferred in cafeteria-style feeding experiments over 14 other species of vascular plants. The most preferred water lily (Brasenia) also afforded the fastest growth relative to three other species on which growth was measured. Feeding preferences across species were unrelated to protein content, polyphenolic content, or toughness. Domiciles constructed by caterpillars from leaf fragments were protective from field assemblages of fishes, but domiciles made from preferred or unpreferred host species conferred no significant protection from fish in the laboratory. Caterpillars responded positively to chemical cues of water lilies, and prior feeding experience increased preference for an otherwise unpreferred water lily (Nuphar advena) within the life-span of individual caterpillars. M. gyralis is a generalist herbivore exhibiting modest preference induction and preferences for and among members of the family Nymphaeaceae. Our results suggest that relative growth rates, chemical cues, and previous feeding experience are important factors determining feeding preference. Protein content, polyphenolic content, and toughness appear less important, and the importance of fish predators remains in question. As pupation seems to occur exclusively on Nymphaea, we suggest that host use may be restricted due to life-stage-specific developmental constraints that are not apparent from the results of growth or preference assays. It is currently unknown how often specific life-stages may restrict host use, but our work suggests this as a potentially important area of inquiry.  相似文献

Cellular DNA is under constant attack from numerous exogenous and endogenous agents. The resulting DNA lesions, if not repaired timely, could stall DNA replication, leading to genome instability. To better understand the mechanism of DNA lesion replication at the biochemical level, we have attempted to reconstitute this process in Xenopus egg extracts, the only eukaryotic in vitro system that relies solely on cellular proteins for DNA replication. By using a plasmid DNA that carries a site-specific apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) lesion as template, we have found that DNA replication is stalled one nucleotide before the lesion. The stalling is temporary and the lesion is eventually replicated by both an error-prone mechanism and an error-free mechanism. This is the first biochemical system that recapitulates efficiently and faithfully all major aspects of DNA lesion replication. It has provided the first direct evidence for the existence of an error-free lesion replication mechanism and also demonstrated that the error-prone mechanism is a major contributor to lesion replication.  相似文献

The morphobiochemical adaptations to the drying and feeding of four species of littoral mollusks collected in a confined area of the Atlantic coast have been analyzed: Tectarius striatus, Siphonaria pectinata, Phorcus atratus, and P. sauciatus. It was established that these mollusks differ strongly from each other morphologically and biochemically, thus demonstrating a variety of adaptations to the same environmental conditions. It was noted that T. striatus is the most adapted to live in the tidal zone. It is assumed that the survival of P. atratus and P. sauciatus in the conditions of drying is to some extent maintained by the green pigment (biliverdin) concentrated in the soft tissues, as its quantity increases as the mollusks remain without water.  相似文献

Diurnal variations of some parameters of protein, lipid, and water metabolisms in the underyearlings of indigenous (perch, Perca fluviatilis L.) and nonindigenous (tyulka, Clupeonella cultriventris Nordmann) fish species have been analyzed. These species form the basis of feeding aggregations of young fish in the Rybinsk Reservoir pelagial. No significant daily fluctuations in the values of protein content, water, and lipids in the studied fish species were revealed. Stable interspecific differences in mean daily and hourly values of the above-mentioned components, as well as in the contents of three lipid fractions—phospholipids (PLs), free cholesterol (FC), and triacylglycerols (TAGs)—have been determined at the level of whole organism. It is shown that the level of adipose reserves and the content of TAG in the tyulka are higher than in perch, while the contents of proteins, PL, and FC are lower. Diurnal variations of the level of each of the three fractions in both fish species are similar, but the ranges of variations are wider in tyulka than in perch. Possible mechanisms for the regulation of lipid metabolism and their similarity in young fish of different species upon adaptation to short-term changes in the environment are discussed. It is suggested that the modern state of the zooplankton community in the Rybinsk Reservoir pelagial negatively affects the feeding of perch underyearlings and parameters of lipid metabolism in their organisms.  相似文献

Rheoreaction of early juveniles of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka is experimentally investigated, including different spatial groups (denatant migrants, contranatant migrants, specimens living in bays and at closed river banks, juveniles from the coastal zone of the lake). Investigation is made in water of the river flowing from the lake and in water of the stream flowing into the lake. It is shown that the rheoreaction (the type of rheoreaction) is one of behavioral mechanisms performing feeding migration of early juveniles of sockeye salmon. Contranatant migrants that reached the feeding lake retain the positive type of rheoreaction, which favors the exit of juveniles from the zone of discharge exclusion and prevents the drift of juveniles to the river at night at poorer conditions for orientation. Juveniles placed into the water of the inflowing stream manifest a sharply negative rheoreaction type contributing to their rapid lakeward migration for feeding. In water of two steams (taking its beginning in the lake and flowing into it) such type of rheoreaction is observed which ensures migration of sockeye juveniles to their principal feeding water body-Lake Kurilskoe.  相似文献

The Norwegian spring-spawning (NSS) herring (Clupea harengus), blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) and Northeast Atlantic (NEA) mackerel (Scomber scombrus) are extremely abundant pelagic planktivores that feed in the Norwegian Sea (NS) during spring and summer. This study investigated the feeding ecology and diet composition of these commercially important fish stocks on the basis of biological data, including an extensive set of stomach samples in combination with hydrographical data, zooplankton samples and acoustic abundance data from 12 stock monitoring surveys carried out in 2005–2010. Mackerel were absent during the spring, but had generally high feeding overlap with herring in the summer, with a diet mainly based on calanoid copepods, especially Calanus finmarchicus, as well as a similar diet width. Stomach fullness in herring diminished from spring to summer and feeding incidence was lower than that of mackerel in summer. However, stomach fullness did not differ between the two species, indicating that herring maintain an equally efficient pattern of feeding as mackerel in summer, but on a diet that is less dominated by copepods and is more reliant on larger prey. Blue whiting tended to have a low dietary overlap with mackerel and herring, with larger prey such as euphausiids and amphipods dominating, and stomach fullness and feeding incidence increasing with length. For all the species, feeding incidence increased with decreasing temperature, and for mackerel so did stomach fullness, indicating that feeding activity is highest in areas associated with colder water masses. Significant annual effects on diet composition and feeding-related variables suggested that the three species are able to adapt to different food and environmental conditions. These annual effects are likely to have an important impact on the predation pressure on different plankton groups and the carrying capacity of individual systems, and emphasise the importance of regular monitoring of pelagic fish diets.  相似文献

Cucurbitacin E and cucurbitacin I have been isolated from green parts of Iberis amara and identified by TLC, UV and MS. It is shown that cucurbitacins act as feeding inhibitors for the flea beetle Phyllotreta nemorum. The most potent feeding inhibitors in green parts of I. amara towards P. nemorum are cucurbitacin E and I, and the concentrations of these compounds in the plant are found to be high enough to prevent feeding of the flea beetle.  相似文献

The shell growth, moulting, and faecal pellet production of Balanus balanoides (L.) have been investigated experimentally in turbulent and quiet conditions. In turbulent conditions an algal food level of 50% was sufficient to maintain the same shell growth as at the 100% level, whereas at this level in quiet conditions growth was less than at 50% with turbulence. At the 10% food level growth was markedly reduced in quiet conditions. On the assumption that production of faeces is a measure of feeding activity, the latter is stimulated by turbulence as is the moulting rate. The relation between production of faeces and moulting is, however, independent of water movement. Faecal pellet production continues at higher algal food levels after the growth rate has become constant indicating that when assimilation is maximal there is no feed-back mechanism regulating food intake.  相似文献

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), the Western Flower Thrips (WFT), is a polyphagous and highly adaptable insect of the order Thysanoptera. It has a broad host range but is rarely found on Papaveraceae, which might be due to deterrent effects of alkaloids present in most species of this family. In order to test the adaptive potential of WFT, we investigated its interaction with two Papaveraceae offered as sole feeding source. We found that WFT are able to live and feed on leaves of Eschscholzia californica and Chelidonium majus. Both plants respond to thrips feeding by the enhanced production of benzophenanthridine alkaloids. Furthermore, cell cultures of E. californica react to water insoluble compounds prepared from adult thrips with enhanced alkaloid production. During feeding, WFT take up benzophenanthridine alkaloids from either plant and from an artificial feeding medium and convert them to their less toxic dihydroderivatives. This was shown in detail with sanguinarine, the most cytotoxic benzophenanthridine. A similar conversion is used in plants to prevent self-intoxication by their own toxins. We conclude that WFT causes a phytoalexin-like response in Papaveraceae, but is able to adapt to such host plants by detoxification of toxic alkaloids.  相似文献

Adult Glossina morsitans fed on aqueous salt solutions containing phagostimulant ATP in an in vitro feeding system gave an optimal feeding response only over a narrow pH range equivalent to that of vertebrate blood. There was much less discrimination on the basis of molar concentration.The rate and extent of water excretion by the fly was found to depend on the concentration of Na+ ions in the food medium: an active transport mechanism is indicated which enables water to pass from the meal through the anterior midgut wall and into the haemocoele. A favourable osmotic gradient assisted water transport in the presence of Na+ ions: the system could not operate efficiently in the presence of Na+ ions if the osmotic pressure of the food medium was higher than that of vertebrate blood, nor could it operate efficiently in any solution lacking Na+ ions.Normal transfer of a meal from the crop to the anterior midgut occurred only when the food medium was isotonic with vertebrate blood or in the presence of Na+ ions if hypotonic. Normal transfer of isotonic solutions was prevented in the presence of excess K+ ions, and hypertonic solutions were not transferred normally even in the presence of Na+ ions. Thus the rate of water excretion was reduced.Tsetse flies fed on blood in an in vitro feeding system excreted water at a significantly lower rate than flies fed on a living animal. Evidence suggests that this is due to a combined effect of changes in viscosity, effective ionic composition, and osmotic pressure, upon the normal rate and extent of food uptake and manipulation of the meal prior to digestion. The implications of this are discussed in terms of future developments of in vitro feeding techniques for haematophagous insects.  相似文献
