Larval development of D. roemeri occurs in the subcutaneous and intermuscular connective tissue and intramuscularly in the pelvic region and hind limbs of the wallaroo and eastern grey kangaroo. Host response to developing larvae is not evident at 1, 14 and 28 days. The development of D. roemeri in the red kangaroo exhibits features previously observed in both normal and abnormal hosts. Low-level blood microfilaraemia of brief duration occurs in the red kangaroo, which may act as a secondary reservoir of infection for other kangaroo and wallaby species. Among commercially harvested Macropodidae in Queensland there is a greater prevalence of D. roemeri in wallaroos and grey kangaroos than in red kangaroos. Infection is most prevalent in animals from south-central and south-western districts.  相似文献

Smales L. R. 1977. The life history of Labiostrongylus eugenii, a nematode parasite of the Kangaroo Island Wallaby (Macropus eugenii): the parasitic stages. International Journal for Parasitology7: 457–461. Labiostrongylus eugenii infective larvae ingested by the Kangaroo Island Wallaby exsheathe on the saccular stomach wall, then invade the mucosa causing one or two chronic irritative hyperpastic nodules, each containing a number of larvae. Six to eight weeks later the larvae leave the stomach wall and moult to fourth-stage. The fourth-stage larva is characterized by eight lips, while the oesophagus and anterior intestine assume the adult form. The posterior ends of late fourth-stage larvae become sexually differentiated. Moulting to adult occurs after 6–8 weeks with the first gravid females being observed 3 months later. The prepatent period appears to last about 6 months. Reasons for failure of experimental infection trials and the epidemiological significance of the life cycle were discussed.  相似文献

In the past 20 years, fauna and ecology of horse flies (Tabanidae) were intensively studied in Croatia, especially in the Ramsar sites as wetlands of international importance. Different habitat requirements of larvae were recognised and adults of 78 species in 10 genera were recorded. The true aquatic and semiaquatic larvae are represented by several species of the genera Chrysops Meigen, 1803 Hybomitra Enderlein, 1922. Some species from this ecological group are typical inhabitants of saline biotopes. In the Croatian fauna three halophilous species were recorded: Chrysops italicus Meigen, 1804, Hybomitra acuminata (Loew, 1858) and H. expollicata (Pandellé, 1883). The distribution of these species in Croatia covers 7, 17 and 3 UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) grids, respectively. Specimens were primarily collected in habitats with brackish water along the Adriatic coast, such as Vransko Lake, the mouth of the River Cetina, the delta of the River Neretva and Mljet Island. Only specimens of H. acuminata were recorded in the continental part of Croatia. They were sporadically collected on localities along the Danube floodplain and on four localities near the river Drava. The distribution of H. acuminata in the continental part indicates otherwise rare saline habitats along the Drava and Danube rivers (1.38% of the total catch of the Hybomitra – species from the floodplain).  相似文献

Tabanus spp. or horse flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) are haematophagous flies of medical and veterinary importance. They are known to cause trypanosomosis or surra in domestic and wild animals in Thailand. This study conducted an entomological survey of horse flies from different sites in Thailand. Horse flies were collected from three different habitats: primary forests, secondary forests and villages using Nzi traps between April 2012 and December 2016. A total of 1835 female horse flies were collected and 45 species were identified. The five most abundant species were T. striatus (25.45%), followed by T. megalops (21.36%), T. rubidus (14.82%), T. tamthaiorum (7.90%) and T. oxybeles (6.38%). The highest proportion of horse flies was collected in villages (39.13%), followed by primary forests (34%) and secondary forests (26.87%). The species diversity of horse flies in primary forests was higher than in other habitats. The results of this study may be used for a horse fly control program.  相似文献

From April 1970 to August 1971, 235 cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) and 281 rice rats (Oryzomys palustris) were trapped in salt and fresh water marshes in north-central Florida and examined for natural infections of filarial worms, Litomosoides spp. Cotton rats from both types of marshes were infected (28–44 per cent prevalence), whereas only rice rats from the salt marsh were infected (56 per cent prevalence). Older animals were more commonly infected than younger ones. In cotton rats the worms were located in the pleural cavity, whereas in rice rats the worms were located primarily in the abdominal cavity. Filarial worms from rice rats were transmitted experimentally to laboratory-reared rice rats and cotton rats, but worms from cotton rats were transmitted only to cotton rats. Morphological studies on adult forms and microfilariae indicated that the worms in rice rats were distinct from those in cotton rats and are therefore described as Litomosoides scotti sp. n. The cotton rat filariids were referable to Litomosoides carinii (Travassos, 1919) Vaz, 1934. L. scotti differs from L. carinii in the ratio of the spicules, in the shape of the distal end of the right spicule and in having shorter microfilariae.  相似文献

The morphology of first instar larvae of three species of Miltogramma Meigen subgenus Pediasiomyia Rohdendorf is described using SEM and light microscope techniques. Miltogramma chrysochlamys (Rohdendorf), Miltogramma margiana (Rohdendorf) and Miltogramma przhevalskyi (Rohdendorf) share with other satellite flies the presence of an elongated sensillum basiconicum of the maxillary palpus and numerous longitudinal cuticular ridges on the integument of all segments; and they share with other Miltogramma spp. a maxillary palpus situated on a more or less raised base. While the first instar M. margiana is very similar to first instars of Miltogramma (sensu stricto), first instars of M. chrysochlamys and M. przhevalskyi share several features unique among Miltogramminae: antennal dome situated on a flat or indistinct basal ring, antennal dome flattened, border between pseudocephalon and first thoracic segment with a pair of fleshy processes, and basal ring with trichoid sensillum. First instars of M. chrysochlamys and M. przhevalskyi are unique in having both sb1 and sb2 of the sensilla basiconica of the maxillary palpus elongated, and M. przhevalskyi has an unpaired, median proleg on most abdominal segments.  相似文献

Third-stage larvae of the genus Anisakis from the fish Leionura atun (Trichiuroidei: Perciformes) form a new cuticle and moult in vitro in about 72 h. If the culture medium is Krebs-Ringer under 5% carbon dioxide in air at 37°C, relatively few moult and survival is poor. But more moult and survival is enhanced if worms are incubated in tissue culture medium 199, even if the gas phase is air, although they moult more quickly if it contains 5% carbon dioxide. In both Krebs-Ringer and 199 the benefits of high concentrations of carbon dioxide only accrue if the gas is present during the first 40 h of incubation. Worms do not feed in these media until they have moulted.  相似文献

Cogley T. P., Anderson J. R. and Cooley L. J. 1982. Migration of Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) in the equine oral cavity. International Journal for Parasitology12: 473–480. Larvae of G. intestinalis pursued a specific migratory pathway within the equine oral cavity en route to the stomach. The larval migration included the following sequence: burrowing in the tongue mucosa, invasion of the interdental spaces, transitory attachment at the root of the tongue and movement to the stomach. The molt from first to second instar did not occur in the tongue, as commonly believed, but between the interdental spaces. Ninety five percent of the larvae invading the interdental spaces were associated with gingiva of the upper molars. SEM analysis revealed further details of the oral migration: (1) air holes excavated in the epithelium which connect with deeper burrows; (2) an intimate association between air holes and posterior spiracles of larvae; (3) precise impressions of larvae in tissue immediately surrounding the most recently formed burrows; and (4) initial larval entry into the tongue through the use of natural disruptions or healing lesions. Factors influencing the development of the oral migration are discussed.  相似文献

Co-60 radiation has been broadly used for pest management because it results in male sterility and a lack of emergence of unparasitized hosts due to oxidative damage. Insect life is significantly affected by abiotic stress factors, including Co-60 radiation. In the present study, we determined the influence of Co-60 radiation on an important pest in southern China, the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae). We exposed 30-h-old B. dorsalis eggs to Co-60 radiation at doses of (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40?Gy) and determined the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POX). CAT and POX activity significantly increased in B. dorsalis in the 1st larvae instar after high-intensity radiation doses (25–40?Gy) and played an important role in the antioxidant response to intensive radiation. The activity of POX in B. dorsalis at the 2nd larval instar sharply decreased after different doses of radiation, except for 10 and 40?Gy. Our results demonstrated that Co-60 radiation affected the activity of antioxidant enzymes and disturbed the physiology of B. dorsalis, especially at early stages (the 1st, 2nd larvae instar). These three antioxidant defense enzymes cooperatively play an important role in protecting B. dorsalis from oxidative damage.  相似文献

The role of larval behaviour in successful completion of tissue migration is briefly discussed and it is related to the passive carriage of larvae along the ‘pipes and tubes’ of the host. Larvae of N. brasiliensis were injected into selected portions of the circulatory system and following periods of 5–60 min they were recovered from the blood, liver and lungs. Larvae were also immobilised in 0·4% piperazine, a dosage which permitted recovery in about 60 min. The dispersion of treated larvae was compared with that untreated controls. It was found that larvae were carried very rapidly in the blood stream and that they became lodged in the first capillary bed that they entered. They could not pass through capillary beds without movements (and/or secretions). A decreased number of adults developed after larvae were introduced via a series of routes which required the larvae to pass through an increasing number of ‘hurdles’ to migration.  相似文献

Functional response of a solitary, larval-pupal endoparasitoid of Liriomyza leafminers, Ganaspidium utilis Beardsley, was estimated on Liriomyza trifolii Burgess at three temperatures (17℃, 25℃, 29℃ ) and host densities. A type Ⅱ random parasitoid equation (RPE) was used to estimate instantaneous search rate and handling time. The instantaneous search rate increased as temperature increased. All of the RPE regressions obtained for functional response of G. utilis at different temperatures were significant (P〈0.01). The slope of RPE regression lines was lower across the temperatures. At 29±2℃, the maximum number of larvae parasitized was 7.8 per day. It decreased to 7.2 larvae parasitized at 25±2℃. At 17±2℃, no significant increment of parasitization was observed due to the host density increments. The estimated handling time was lowest at 17±2℃ and highest at 25 ± 2℃, respectively. The ability of G. utilis to find and parasitize L. trifolii over a wide range of temperatures makes them a good candidate for biological control of Liriomyza leafminers.  相似文献

Onchocerca volvulus and Mansonella ozzardi are two human filarial parasites present in South and Central America. In the Brazilian Amazonia they are found in sympatry, and the lack of clear morphological diagnostic characters in the microfilariae hinders their identification. The major sperm protein (MSP) gene of both species has been sequenced and characterised to determine its potential as a molecular diagnostic character. The length of the MSP gene is different in each species, and this could be used to detect and differentiate them by running the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product in an agarose gel. Two major gene groups were identified in O. volvulus with a genetic distance of 6% between them. In M. ozzardi only one major group of genes was observed. The high similarity between the protein amino acid sequence of both filarial species confirms that the MSP has been highly conserved through nematode evolution.  相似文献

Perry R. N., Wharton D. A. and Clarke A. J. 1982. The structure of the egg-shell of Globodera rostochiensis (Nematoda: Tyienchida). International Journal for Parasitology12: 481–485. The ultrastructure and histochemistry of the egg-shell of Globodera rostochiensis are described. The eggshell consists of an outer vitelline layer, a chitinous layer and an inner lipid layer. The vitelline layer is not unit membrane-like and has strands of particulate material attached to its outer surface. The chitinous layer is made up of fibres consisting of a chitin microfibril core, surrounded by a protein coat. The lipid layer contains lipoprotein membranes. These vary in number, the most commonly observed pattern being two or three membranes loosely associated with the inner surface of the egg-shell.  相似文献

Annual monitoring of the population dynamics of the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) using methyl eugenol-baited traps was conducted throughout the year during 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2004 in Ruili, Yunnan Province, China. Temperature, rainfall and host-plant species were analyzed with respect to population fluctuation of the fly. During the study periods the fruit fly occurred throughout the year. Its population remained low from November to January and increased steadily from February until it reached a peak in June. Afterwards, the population declined until October. The results of stepwise regression analysis indicated that monthly mean temperature, monthly mean maximum temperature, monthly mean minimum temperature, monthly extreme maximum temperature, monthly extreme minimum temperature, and monthly raining days were the major climatic factors influencing populations. Path and decision coefficient analyses indicated that the monthly mean temperature was the crucial factor influencing population fluctuation, the monthly mean minimum temperature was the crucial limiting factor indirectly influencing increase in population, and the comprehensive factors influencing fly population dynamics, namely, the monthly raining days were the strongest of all the other factors. Generally, the monthly mean temperatures fell within the ranges of temperatures suitable for development and reproduction of the fly. But the monthly mean minimum temperatures from November to January seemed to be lower and were suggested to be responsible for the low populations in this period. Monthly rainfall and rainy days steadily increased from February through June, and this explained the increase in population observed during this period. During periods of continuous heavy rain from July through August, the fruit fly population showed a remarkable decrease. Host plant species was another essential factor influencing the population fluctuations. Abundant fruit and melon species formed the food and breeding materials for the fly during the study periods.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance of horse and deer flies (family Tabanidae) was analyzed using Mosquito Magnet® traps at 5 sites located near/in the demilitarized zone, northern Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea from late April to early October for 4 consecutive years (2010-2013). A total of 2,999 horse and deer flies (tabanids) belonging to 5 genera and 20 species were collected. Chrysops mlokosiewiczi (90.9%) was the most frequently collected, followed by Haematopota koryoensis (4.8%) and C. suavis (1.0%). The remaining 17 species comprised only of 3.3% of all species collected. C. mlokosiewiczi demonstrated bimodal peak populations during mid-June and early August, while H. koryoensis demonstrated a unimodal peak during mid-July. Overall numbers of tabanids collected were influenced by the previous year’s winter temperatures and precipitation. Population abundance was influenced by habitat with most of tabanids collected from habitats near forested areas, followed by rice paddies, and a beef farm.  相似文献

Natural diets commonly exploited by the flies are animal manures including production from the poultry and livestock facilities. The larvae of the common filth flies such as Musca domestica and Sarcophaga dux are known as voracious feeders and may thus be used to convert manures into non-polluted residue. This study was conducted to observe the impact on flies' growth rate and capability of the larvae to process animal manures using chicken, goat and cow manures. One hundred newly hatched larvae of M. domestica and S. dux were introduced separately into 150?g manures under laboratory conditions. The initial wet mass and larvae length were recorded while mortality rate and dry mass were measured after the larvae were placed into the manures. The results showed that the manure types give significant effects (p?<?.05) on the growth of M. domestica and S. dux larvae. Cow manures and chicken manures contributed the highest growth for M. domestica and S. dux respectively. This result confirmed by the mean increment in wet mass and larvae length. In contrast, M. domestica greatly reduced 59.9?±?4% chicken manures while 25.0?±?1.8% goat manures reduced by S. dux. The potential of M. domestica and S. dux larvae to reduce animal waste products were further discussed in this study.  相似文献
