Final temperature preferendum of white shrimp adults were determined with acute and gravitation methods. The final preferendum was similar, independent of method (26.2–25.6 °C). A direct relationship was determined between the critical thermal maxima values and the acclimation temperatures (P<0.05). The end point of Critical Thermal Maxima (CTMax) for adults was defined as the loss of righting response (LRR). The acclimation response ratio (ARR) for adults of white shrimp had an interval of 0.36–0.76, values that agreed with others obtained for crustaceans from tropical and subtropical climates. The oxygen consumption rates increased significantly (P<0.05) from 39.6 up to 90.0 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 wet weight (w.w.) as the acclimation temperature increased from 20 to 32 °C. The range of temperature coefficient (Q10) of the white shrimp between 23 and 26 °C was the lower 1.60. The results obtained in this work are discussed in relation to the species importance in the reproductive scope and maintenance of breeders. 相似文献

It has now been well established that insects can respond to variation in their environment via acclimation, yet the extent of the response varies among populations and environmental characteristics. One under-investigated theme which may contribute to this variation concerns acclimation effects across the life cycle. The present study explores how acclimation in the larval stage of Culex pipiens affects thermal relations in the adult stage. Mosquitoes were reared in a full factorial design at 18 or 26 °C as larvae and adults, then critical thermal maxima (CTmax) and metabolic rate–temperature relationships (MR–T) were determined for all 4 treatments. CTmax was positively affected by both larval and adult acclimation treatments. MR–T slope was significantly affected only by adult treatment: warm acclimated adults had on average shallower slopes and higher y-intercepts than cool acclimated ones. These results demonstrate that larval acclimation effects can alter adult phenotypes in a species whose life cycle includes two drastically different environments, an aquatic and a terrestrial stage. Studying insects with complex life cycles, especially those with aquatic or subterranean larval stages, can provide valuable information on the effects of thermal variability and predictability on phenotypic plasticity. 相似文献

The effects of acclimation temperature on insect thermal performance curves are generally poorly understood but significant for understanding responses to future climate variation and the evolution of these reaction norms. Here, in Acheta domesticus, we examine the physiological effects of 7-9 days acclimation to temperatures 4 °C above and below optimum growth temperature of 29 °C (i.e. 25, 29, 33 °C) for traits of resistance to thermal extremes, temperature-dependence of locomotion performance (jumping distance and running speed) and temperature-dependence of respiratory metabolism. We also examine the effects of acclimation on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) enzyme activity. Chill coma recovery time (CRRT) was significantly reduced from 38 to 13 min with acclimation at 33-25 °C, respectively. Heat knockdown resistance was less responsive than CCRT to acclimation, with no significant effects of acclimation detected for heat knockdown times (25 °C: 18.25, 29 °C: 18.07, 33 °C: 25.5 min). Thermal optima for running speed were higher (39.4-40.6 °C) than those for jumping performance (25.6-30.9 °C). Acclimation temperature affected jumping distance but not running speed (general linear model, p = 0.0075) although maximum performance (UMAX) and optimum temperature (TOPT) of the performance curves showed small or insignificant effects of acclimation temperature. However, these effects were sensitive to the method of analysis since analyses of TOPT, UMAX and the temperature breadth (TBR) derived from non-linear curve-fitting approaches produced high inter-individual variation within acclimation groups and reduced variation between acclimation groups. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) was positively related to body mass and test temperature. Acclimation temperature significantly influenced the slope of the SMR-temperature reaction norms, whereas no variation in the intercept was found. The CCO enzyme activity remained unaffected by thermal acclimation. Finally, high temperature acclimation resulted in significant increases in mortality (60-70% at 33 °C vs. 20-30% at 25 and 29 °C). These results suggest that although A. domesticus may be able to cope with low temperature extremes to some degree through phenotypic plasticity, population declines with warmer mean temperatures of only a few degrees are likely owing to the limited plasticity of their performance curves. 相似文献

The geographic range of the coral, Plesiastrea versipora (Lamarck, 1816), extends into temperate waters outside the southern limit for hermatypic corals. In the present study, calcification in Plesiastrea collected from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria was examined over the coral's normal annual temperature range (10-21 °C), which is well below the normal optimum for coral calcification in tropical corals (25-28 °C). Calcification rate in Plesiastrea was considerably lower than in reef corals, but showed a similar pattern in temperature responses, with a trend towards higher rates at ∼18 °C. The light/dark calcification ratio was markedly lower than that in tropical corals. Autoradiography showed that calcification occurred primarily by deposition of calcium carbonate at the upper surfaces of the septo-costae. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that skeletal deposition in Plesiastrea had a temperature-dependent diel pattern. In the light, calcium carbonate was deposited as small spheroidal crystals and, at higher temperatures, small needle-shaped crystals. In the dark, calcium carbonate deposition appeared to be in the form of an amorphous sheet-like cementation. Compared with other scleractinian corals, calcification rate in Plesiastrea was relatively slow and showed different patterns of skeletal deposition. 相似文献

An inverse and unusual relationship was found between preferred temperature and acclimation temperature in the bullseye puffer, Sphoeroides annulatus. The final preferendum temperature (PT) was 26.8 °C. The critical thermal maxima (CTMax) were 37.7, 38.8, 40.0, 40.8 and 41.3 °C where the temperatures of acclimation were 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 °C±1 °C, respectively, and the endpoint of CTMax was loss of the righting response. The acclimation response ratio presented an interval of 0.22-0.38; these values are in agreement with results for other subtropical and tropical fishes. The temperature significantly affected the oxygen consumption of bullseye puffer juveniles. The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) increased significantly with an increment in the temperature from 19 to 31 °C. The range of the temperature coefficient Q10 in bullseye puffer individuals was lowest between 25 and 28 °C, at 1.37. The optimal temperature for growth was 26 °C. The results of this study will be useful for optimizing the culture of bullseye puffer juveniles in controlled conditions. 相似文献

Using horizontal electrophoresis, 13 allozyme loci were screened in 144 adult clams (Venus antiqua) (King of Broderip) from 5 geographic samples in southern Chile. Polymorphism was detected at 11 loci across the sampling localities. Gene frequency differences rather than the alternative fixation of alleles characterize these collecting sites. Direct-count heterozygosity fluctuated between 6.8% and 10.3%, with a generalized and significant heterozygote deficiency detected in every locality. Similar levels of genetic diversity were detected in both exploited banks and one presumed unmanaged population. Substantial estimates of demic structuration were found at the total population (FST=0.107) and regional levels (FST=0.143), with coinciding high inbreeding estimates (FIS=0.57). Although no statistically significant evidence of genetic substructuring was found at the within-region comparison (FST=0.007), a generalized heterozygote deficiency (FIS=0.57) also characterized that hierarchical level. Spatial correlation of gene frequencies indicated a nearly random distribution of genotypes along the latitudinal distribution of samples. The high rates of global, and the within-region rates of gene flow suggest substantial larval interchange via long-distance dispersal that prevent differentiation by drift alone. Accordingly, no discrete genetic units can be recognized for the species at any spatial scale. Apparently, high recruitment rates help in replenishing genetic variants lost by continuous overfishing, thus explaining why human extraction has not resulted in major losses of genetic variation for individual populations. The slow-growing rate and delayed sexual maturation of this clam species are apparently stronger limiting factors than human-induced genetic erosion for the conservation of natural beds and viable captive management of V. antiqua. 相似文献

Oxygen consumption of Amphibola crenata (Gmelin) was measured in various salinity-temperature combinations (< 0.1‰ to 41‰ salinity and 5 to 30°C) in air, and following exposure to declining oxygen tensions. In all experimental conditions, respiration varied with the 0.44 power of the body weight (sd = 0.14). The aquatic rate was consistently higher than the aerial rate of oxygen consumption, although at 30 °C the two rates were similar. Oxygen consumption increased with temperature up to 25 °C in all salinities; the lowest values were recorded at temperatures below 10 °C and at 30 °C in the most dilute medium. At all exposure temperatures, the oxygen consumption of Amphibola decreased regularly with salinity down to 0.1 ‰, and following exposure to concentrated sea water (41‰). Salinity had the least effect at 15 °C which was the acclimation temperature. In general, all of the temperature coefficients (Q10 values) were low, < 1.65. However, Q10 values above 2.8 were recorded at a salinity of 17.8‰ between 10 and 15 °C. Oxygen consumption of all size classes of Amphibola was more temperature dependent in air than in water and small individuals show a greater difference between their aerial and aquatic rates than larger snails. The rates of oxygen consumption in declining oxygen tensions were expressed as fractions of the rates in air saturated sea water at each experimental salinity-temperature combination. The quadratic coefficient B2 becomes increasingly more negative with both decreasing salinity and temperatures up to 20 °C. At higher temperatures (25 and 30 °C) the response is reversed such that O2 uptake in snails becomes increasingly independent of declining oxygen tensions at higher salinities. On exposure to a salinity of 4‰, Amphibola showed no systematic response to declining oxygen tension with respect to temperature. The ability of Amphibola to maintain its rate of oxygen consumption in a wide range of environmental conditions is discussed in relation to its potential for invading terrestrial habitats and its widespread distribution on New Zealand's intertidal mudflats. 相似文献

Background
Plagiochin E (PLE) is an antifungal macrocyclic bis(bibenzyl) isolated from liverwort Marchantia polymorpha L. Its antifungal mechanism is unknown. To elucidate the mechanism of action, its effect on mitochondria function in Candida albicans was studied.Methods
We assayed the mitochondrial membrane potential (mtΔψ) using rhodamine 123, measured ATP level in mitochondria by HPLC, and detected the activities of mitochondrial F0F1-ATPase and dehydrogenases. Besides, the mitochondrial dysfunction-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was determined by a fluorometric assay, and the effects of antioxidant L-cysteine on PLE-induced ROS production and the antifungal effect of PLE on C. albicans were also investigated.Results
Exposure to PLE resulted in an elevation of mtΔψ, and a decrease of ATP level in mitochondria. The ATP depletion owed to PLE-induced enhancement of mitochondrial F0F1-ATPase and inhibition of the mitochondrial dehydrogenases. These dysfunctions of mitochondria caused ROS accumulation in C. albicans, and this increase in the level of ROS production and PLE-induced decrease in cell viability were prevented by addition of L-cysteine, indicating that ROS was an important mediator of the antifungal action of PLE.Conclusions
PLE exerts its antifungal activity through mitochondrial dysfunction-induced ROS accumulation in C. albicans.General significance

The viral particles are widespread in the tissues of an isopodan parasitic castrator, Portunion conformis, and its shore crab host, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, collected in San Francisco Bay, California. As part of the quantitative investigations into the bioenergetic relationships of the Barents Sea capelin, Mallotus villosus villosus (Müller, 1776), resting metabolic rates were examined in the oviferous and post-spawning fish in order to provide insights to aerobic scaling and the basal energetic costs associated with reproduction. Aerobic scaling of the different categories of sexually mature fish (body weight, W=13-54 g) could be expressed as: QO2=0.106W1.049 (oviferous fish; N=11), QO2=0.411W0.430 (post-spawning females; N=9), and QO2=0.075W1.012 (post-spawning males; N=14), where QO2 is the oxygen consumption (ml O2 h−1) per fish. The weight specific oxygen consumption of oviferous capelin was about 30% higher (∼125 ml O2 kg−1 h−1) compared to those of the post-spawning fish (79-87 ml O2 kg−1 h−1). The results are discussed in context with other empirical studies on the aerobic scaling and metabolic costs involved with the build-up of roe in the fish. 相似文献

Early life history patterns were studied in the caridean shrimp, Campylonotus vagans Bate, 1888, from the subantarctic Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego). As a consequence of very large egg size (minimum 1.4 mm), fecundity was low, ranging from 83 to 608 eggs per female (carapace length [CL] 11-22.5 mm). Egg size increased continuously throughout embryonic development, reaching prior to hatching about 175% of the initial diameter. Due to low daily numbers of larval release, hatching of an egg batch lasted for about 2-3 weeks. The complete larval and early juvenile development was studied in laboratory cultures fed with Artemia sp. nauplii. At 7.0±0.5 °C, development from hatching to metamorphosis lasted for about 6 weeks. It comprised invariably two large zoeal stages and one decapodid, with mean stage durations of 12, 17, and 15 days, respectively. Larvae maintained without food survived on average for 18 days (maximum: 29 days), but did not reach the moult to the zoea II stage. Size increments at ecdysis were low in all larval stages (2.1-3.9%), indicating partial utilisation of internal energy reserves. A clearly higher increment (14%) was observed in the moult from the first to the second juvenile stage. Low fecundity, large size of eggs and larvae, an abbreviated mode of larval development, high larval survival rates during absence of food, demersal behaviour of the early life history stages, and an extended hatching period with low daily release rates are interpreted as adaptations to conditions typically prevailing in subantarctic regions, namely low temperatures (causing long durations of development) in combination with a pronounced seasonality in plankton production (i.e., short periods of food availability). 相似文献

It is crucial to study how food resources are allocated in order to understand how invertebrate species of soft-bottomed benthic communities can live in the same environment, especially when belonging to the same trophic level. On the southern shore of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, the polychaetes Nereis virens (Nereidae) and Nephtys caeca (Nephtyidae) represent the main infaunal predators and are known to regulate (by predation) other populations within their community. For these animal populations, there is a high degree of spatial overlap in the horizontal dimension as well as vertically in the sediment column. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the feeding activity of N. virens and N. caeca in relation to several environmental factors. The feeding activity of N. caeca was further studied under natural and experimental conditions and a feeding experiment was carried out to evaluate how the food resource is subdivided in conditions of high spatial overlap. Finally, the prospecting activity of N. virens was described under natural conditions. N. virens and N. caeca exhibited a high degree of dietary overlap, particularly at the adult stage. This food resource overlap can easily influence the regulation of these species, even though they display different feeding responses to environmental stimuli. Tides and storm events can also influence the feeding behaviour. We conclude that different behavioural feeding responses likely favour the occurrence of these two species in the same trophic environment. 相似文献

It is widely appreciated that physiological tolerances differ between life stages. However, few studies have examined stage-related differences in acclimation and hardening. In addition, the behavioural responses involved in determining the form and extent of the short-term phenotypic response are rarely considered. Here, we investigate life stage differences in the acclimation and hardening responses of the survival of a standard heat shock (SHS) and standard low temperature (or cold) shock (SCS), and the crystallization temperature (or supercooling point, SCP) of adults and larvae of the sub-Antarctic kelp fly, Paractora dreuxi. These stages live in the same habitat, but differ substantially in their mobility and thus environmental temperatures experienced. Results showed that neither acclimation nor hardening affected the lower lethal limits in larvae or adults. Adults showed an increase in survival of upper lethal limits after low temperature acclimation, whilst larvae showed a consistent lack of response. The acclimation × hardening interaction significantly affected the SCP in adults, but no response to either acclimation or hardening was found in the larvae. This study further demonstrates the complexities of thermal tolerance responses in P. dreuxi. 相似文献

As a prerequisite for models of foraging behaviour of the whelk, Morula marginalba Blainville (Muricidae), the effects of variation in density of prey on the rate of feeding of the predator were examined in field conditions for three coexisting species of prey. Densities of prey used were those at which the prey, two limpets and a barnacle, occurred naturally in the rocky intertidal habitat.Large limpets, Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) can resist attacks by predatory gastropods by raising the mantle over the outside of the shell. These experiments showed that no C. tramoserica were killed by Morula marginalba even at very great densities and with no alternative prey present. For the small limpet Patelloida latistrigata (Angas), one of the whelk's most highly preferred prey, juveniles were eaten 1.4 times as fast as adults. Fitting the random predator equation gave greater attack coefficients and shorter handling times for juvenile than adult limpets.Sizes of both predator and prey affected rates of eating barnacles, Tesseropora rosea (Krauss), but not in a simple way. Whelks of 15-mm aperture length ate adult barnacles 4.2 times faster than did 12-mm whelks, but there was no significant difference in the rates at which the two sizes of snail ate juvenile barnacles.Rates of feeding on T. rosea and Patelloida latistrigata increased significantly with prey density. These results form a basis for including the density of prey in models of spatial dispersion of the predatory gastropod Morula marginalba. 相似文献

The harpacticoid copepod Microarthridion littorale (Poppe) was tested for interaction effects between salinity change and acute pesticide exposure on the survival and genotypic composition of a South Carolina population. Previous data suggested a significant link between a combined exposure to chlorpyrifos (CHPY) and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) and mitochondrial haplotype in the cytochrome b apoenzyme for this euryhaline species when exposed at 12-ppt salinity seawater. Our tests demonstrate a significant non-linear survival response for M. littorale to short-term immersion (24 h) in 3-, 12- and 35-ppt seawater, with copepods transferred to 12-ppt seawater having the lowest survival. There was significant statistical interaction between salinity and pesticide exposure for the dependent variable “survival.” However, changes in genetic composition of survivors were not significant, and they were complicated by extremely low survival in the pesticide/3 ppt and pesticide/36 ppt treatments. As noted for many studies of harpacticoids, males faired worse than females in all treatments, with none surviving pesticide exposure at 45 μg/l CHPY and 6 μg/l DDT. 相似文献

Zaprionus indianus (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an African species that was introduced in Brazil near the end of the 1990’s decade. To evaluate
the adaptive potential of morphological traits in natural populations of this recently introduced species, we have investigated
wing size and shape variation at Rio de Janeiro populations only two years after the first record of Z. indianus in Brazil. Significant genetic differences among populations from three distinct ecological habitats were detected. The heritability
and evolvability estimates show that, even with the population bottleneck that should have occurred during the invasion event,
an appreciable amount of additive genetic variation for wing size and shape was retained. Our results also indicated a greater
influence of environmental variation on wing size than on wing shape. The importance of quantitative genetic variability and
plasticity in the successful establishment and dispersal of Z. indianus in the Brazilian territory is then discussed. 相似文献

Assisted reproductive techniques, such as ovarian manipulation and artificial insemination, are useful for enhancing genetic management of threatened wildlife maintained ex situ. In this study, we used noninvasive fecal hormone monitoring to investigate (1) the influence of pairing with a male on endocrine responses of female maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) to a GnRH agonist (deslorelin) and (2) the efficiency of recombinant LH (reLH) on ovulation induction in females housed alone. Deslorelin (2.1 mg Ovuplant) was given to females that were either paired with a male (n = 4) or housed alone (n = 7); the implant was removed 7 to 11 days postimplantation. Three of seven singleton females were injected with reLH (0.0375 mg) on the day of implant removal, whereas the remaining females (n = 4) did not receive the additional treatment. Fecal samples were collected 5 to 7 days/wk from all females starting 11 days prior to hormone insertion until at least 70 days post implant removal for a total of 11 hormone treatment cycles. Fecal estrogen and progestagen metabolites were extracted and analyzed by enzyme immunoassay. Evidence of ovulation, demonstrated by a surge of estrogen followed by a significant rise in progestagen, occurred in all paired females. Three of the four singleton females that did not receive reLH treatment exhibited no rise in progestagen after an estrogen surge. All singleton females treated with reLH exhibited a rise in fecal progestagen after injection, indicating ovulation. In conclusion, deslorelin is effective at inducing ovarian activity and ovulation in paired female maned wolves; however, exogenous reLH is needed to induce ovulation in females housed alone. The findings obtained from this study serve as a foundation for future application of artificial insemination to enhance genetic management of this threatened species ex situ. 相似文献
