By introducing a parameter which vanishes when the accommodation is normal the modifications in theoretical predictions when accommodation is non-normal are discussed, particularly in the case of stimulation by alternating currents. It is found that non-normality always has the effect of lowering the optimal amplitude of the alternating current, measured in units of the observed rheobase.  相似文献

The ability of viability selection to maintain allelic polymorphism is investigated using a constructionist approach. In extensions to the models we have previously proposed, a population is bombarded with a series of mutations whose fitnesses in conjunction with other alleles are functions of the corresponding fitnesses with a particular allele, the parent allele, already in the population. Allele frequencies are iterated simultaneously, thus allowing alleles to be driven to extinction by selection. Such models allow very high levels of polymorphism to evolve: up to 38 alleles in one case. Alleles that are lethal as homozygotes can evolve to surprisingly high frequencies. The joint evolution of allele frequencies and viabilities highlights the necessity to consider more than the current morphology of a population. Comparisons are made with the neutral theory of evolution and it is suggested that failure to reject neutrality using the Ewens-Watterson test cannot be regarded as evidence for the neutral theory.  相似文献

Widespread use has been made of linear systems theory to describe the input-output relations of receptors. The frequency response function of an insect mechanoreceptor, the tactile spine of the cockroach, has been estimated by using deterministic inputs (sines and step functions), deterministic inputs added to a stochastic, auxiliary signal (band-limited white noise), and a stochastic input alone. When a stochastic input is used, spectral analysis provides methods for estimating the coherence function as well as the frequency response function. The coherence function of the tactile spine is low, suggesting that the linear frequency response function is not a good characterization of the input-output relation of the receptor. Two non-linearities, rectification and phase-locking are described. Rectification can reduce the absolute value of the frequency response measured using sine waves of all frequencies without changing its form. Phase-locking changes the form of the frequency response function at high frequencies. Use of a stochastic auxiliary signal linearizes the input-output relations of the receptor in the sense that the cycle histograms obtained with sinusoidal inputs are more sinusoidal and the form of the frequency response function agrees with that predicted from the step response over a wider range of frequencies.  相似文献

Electrical rectification was demonstrated in whole sartorius muscle and sciatic nerve of Rana pipiens and also in the single giant nerve fiber of the northern squid, Ommastrephes illecibrossus. It is probably a property of the plasma membrane. Rectification decreases reversibly under the influence of increased concentrations of the potassium ion and with chloroform, veratrine sulfate and isoamyl carbamate. No effect was found with lack of calcium, excess calcium, or barium chloride. Decrease in rectification is invariably accompanied by simultaneous decrease in resting potential. A proposed explanation of the mechanism of rectification is discussed. Rectification in a living membrane, viz. a change in resistance with change in direction of current flow, may possibly be explained in terms of a change in the concentration of potassium ions in the membrane.  相似文献

The Mechanism of Discharge Pattern Formation in Crayfish Interneurons   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Excitatory and inhibitory processes which result in the generation of output impulses were analyzed in single crayfish interneurons by using intracellular recording and membrane polarizing techniques. Individual spikes which are initiated orthodromically in axon branches summate temporally and spatially to generate a main axon spike; temporally dispersed branch spikes often pace repetitive discharge of the main axon. Hyperpolarizing IPSP's sometimes suppress axonal discharge to most of these inputs, but in other cases may interact selectively with some of them. The IPSP's reverse their polarity at a hyperpolarized level of membrane potential; they sometimes exhibit two discrete time courses indicating two different input sources. Outward direct current at the main axon near branches causes repetitive discharges which may last, with optimal current intensities, for 1 to 15 seconds. The relation of discharge frequency to current intensity is linear for an early spike interval, but above 100 to 200 impulses/sec. it begins to show saturation. In one unit the current-frequency curve exhibited two linear portions, suggesting the presence of two spike-generating sites in the axon. Current threshold measurements, using test stimuli of different durations, showed that both accommodation and "early" or "residual" refractoriness contribute to the determination of discharge rate at different frequencies.  相似文献

Evaluation of the likelihood in mixed models for non-normal data, e.g. dependent binary data, involves high dimensional integration, which offers severe numerical problems. Penalized quasi-likelihood, iterative re-weighted restricted maximum likelihood and adjusted profile h-likelihood estimation are methods which avoid numerical integration. They will be derived by approximation of the maximum likelihood equations. For binary data, these estimation procedures may yield seriously biased estimates for components of variance, intra-class correlation or heritability. An analytical evaluation of a simple example illustrates how very critical the approximations can be for the performance of the variance component estimators.  相似文献

The giant garter snake, Thamnophis gigas, is a threatened species endemic to California’s Central Valley. We tested the hypothesis that current watershed boundaries have caused genetic differentiation among populations of T. gigas. We sampled 14 populations throughout the current geographic range of T. gigas and amplified 859 bp from the mitochondrial gene ND4 and one nuclear microsatellite locus. DNA sequence variation from the mitochondrial gene indicates there is some genetic structuring of the populations, with high FST values and unique haplotypes occurring at high frequency in several populations. We found that clustering populations by watershed boundary results in significant between-region genetic variance for mtDNA. However, analysis of allele frequencies at the microsatellite locus NSU3 reveals very low FST values and little between-region variation in allele frequencies. The discordance found between mitochondrial and microsatellite data may be explained by aspects of molecular evolution and/or T. gigas life history characteristics. Differences in effective population size between mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, or male-biased gene flow, result in a lower migration rate of mitochondrial haplotypes relative to nuclear alleles. However, we cannot exclude homoplasy as one explanation for homogeneity found for the single microsatellite locus. The mitochondrial nucleotide sequence data supports conservation practices that identify separate management units for T. gigas.  相似文献

A voltage clamp consisting of a sinusoidal voltage of amplitude V1 and frequency f, superimposed on a steady voltage level V0, is applied to the Hodgkin-Huxley model of the squid giant axon membrane. The steady-state response is a current composed of sinusoidal components of frequencies O, f, 2f, 3f,... The frequencies greater than f arise from the nonlinearity of the membrane. The total current is described by a power series in V1; each coefficient of this series is composed of current components for one or more frequencies. For different frequencies one can derive higher-order generalized admittances characterizing the nonlinear as well as the linear properties of the membrane. Formulas for the generalized admittances are derived from the Hodgkin-Huxley equations for frequencies up to 3f, using a perturbation technique. Some of the resulting theoretical curves are compared with experimental results, with good qualitative agreement.  相似文献

Polyphenisms are evolved adaptations in which a genome produces discrete alternative phenotypes in different environments. In this study, the genetic basis of the evolution of a polyphenism by genetic accommodation was investigated. A polyphenic strain and a monophenic strain of Manduca sexta (L.) were crossed and the F(1) offspring and backcross progeny were analysed. The larval colour polyphenism was found to be regulated by one sex-linked gene of major effect and many smaller effect modifier genes. The finding shows that the mechanism of genetic accommodation relies on genetic changes that are consistent with the current view of the genetic basis of adaptive evolution.  相似文献

We have studied the role of accommodation and binocular convergence in the predatory behaviour of two chameleon species (Chamaeleocalyptratus, C. dilepis). Accommodation measurements support earlier observations that accommodation is the major distance cue. Specifically, accommodation speed (60 D s−1), amplitude (45 D) and precision (no significant under-accommodation) were superior to those of other terrestrial vertebrates. Similar to other vertebrates, accommodation was accompanied by a prominent pupillary constriction (pupillary near response). Accommodation could be coupled or uncoupled in both eyes, depending on the experimental situation or the phase of the predatory behavioural sequence. Uncoupled accommodation occurred: 1. During scanning saccadic eye movements for prey detection. Only one eye accommodated appropriately, the other adopted a hyperopic resting refractive state. Attention switched from one eye to the other at approximately 1-s intervals. 2. During initial stages of distance estimation. Coupled accommodation only occurred shortly before the tongue shot. Coupling was demonstrated by either covering one eye with a lens or covering one eye with an infrared light transmitting cut-off filter which still permitted refraction to be measured. In both cases the amount of accommodation was identical in both eyes. Search-coil measurements showed that the angle of convergence of both eyes is too variable to permit triangulation or to provide the basic requirement for stereopsis (matching corresponding points). Three species of the Anopheles gambiae complex were identified in Guinea Bissau (West Africa) by chromosomal analysis. They were An. melas, An. arabiensis and An. gambiae s.s. An melas was observed in coastal and insular zones of the study area as well as in areas where the rivers are tidal and brackish and bordered by mangroves. For this reason, the species occurs also in inland riverine localities such as Farim and Bissorà. An. arabiensis apparently occurs only in low numbers in a very limited inland area during the dry season. An gambiae s.s. was observed nearly everywhere in the study area. In the samples of An. melas three inversion polymorphisms occurred: one on the chromosomal arm 2R (2Rn) and two on the arm 3R (3Rc and 3Re). It was observed that the frequencies of the inverted arrangements 2Rn and 3Re were significantly higher in the islands as compared to the continental sampling localities. The An. arabiensis sample was characterized by the presence of three inversion polymorphisms: 2Ra, 2Rb and 3Ra. A very high degree of polymorphism was shown by the An. gambiae s.s. samples. Four inversion polymorphisms were observed (three on chromosomal arm 2R and one on arm 2L) with very different frequencies of the alternative arrangements in different zones of the study area. From these data it seemed possible to split the species into three populations, each of them apparently linked with a peculiar ecological situation. The first population, characterized by high frequencies of 2Rd arrangement, is present on the coastal zones and in the islands; the second one is present in the northern inland areas particularly during the dry season and it is characterized by high frequencies of 2Rb and 2La arrangements. The third population is present only in the inland zones and it is characterized by high frequencies of 2Rjb, 2Rjd and 2Rjbd arrangements.  相似文献

This work considers the response to simulated synaptic inputs of an excitable membrane model. The model is essentially of the Hodgkin-Huxley type, but contains an A-current in addition to sodium and delayed-rectifier potassium channels. The results were compared with previous simulations in which the stimulus was an injected current. These two types of stimuli give somewhat different results because synaptic stimuli directly change the membrane resistance, whereas injected current does not. The results of synaptic stimulation were similar to injected current in that very low frequencies of action potentials were elicited only where the stimulus was slightly above threshold. For most of the range of synaptic inputs that produced oscillatory behavior, the A-current had little effect on oscillation frequency. With synaptic stimuli as with injected current, the model membrane's spiking behavior does not begin immediately when an excitatory stimulus is imposed on a quiescent state. The delay before spiking is closely related to the inactivation time of the A-current. The synaptic results were different from the injected current results in that when substantial inhibition was present, the ability to produce very-low-frequency spiking was absent, even just above the excitatory threshold. The higher the degree of inhibition, the narrower the range of spike frequencies that could be elicited by excitation. At very high inhibition, no degree of excitation could elicit spiking.  相似文献

Vietnamese leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) were tested for their ability to focus on prey objects at various distances. Accommodation was continuously measured by infrared photoretinoscopy. All animals investigated during this study showed a surprisingly high precision of accommodation over a range of over 30 D. Measured accommodation matched the target distance accurately for distances between 3 and 17 cm. The turtles switched between independent and coupled accommodation in the two eyes. Independent accommodation was observed when the turtles inspected their environment visually without a defined object of interest. Coupled accommodation was only observed during binocular prey fixation. When a turtle aimed at a target, the symmetrical focus of both eyes persisted even if vision was totally blocked in one eye or altered by ophthalmic lenses. This suggests that the eyes were linked by internal neuronal mechanisms. The pupil of the eye responded clearly to changes in ambient light intensity. A strong decrease in pupil size was also observed when the eye was focused on a close target. In this case, the constriction of the pupil probably aids in the deformation of the eye lens during near-accommodation.  相似文献

The mechanism of rectification of HERG, the human cardiac delayed rectifier K+ channel, was studied after heterologous expression in Xenopus oocytes. Currents were measured using two-microelectrode and macropatch voltage clamp techniques. The fully activated current- voltage (I-V) relationship for HERG inwardly rectified. Rectification was not altered by exposing the cytoplasmic side of a macropatch to a divalent-free solution, indicating this property was not caused by voltage-dependent block of outward current by Mg2+ or other soluble cytosolic molecules. The instantaneous I-V relationship for HERG was linear after removal of fast inactivation by a brief hyperpolarization. The time constants for the onset of and recovery from inactivation were a bell-shaped function of membrane potential. The time constants of inactivation varied from 1.8 ms at +50 mV to 16 ms at -20 mV; recovery from inactivation varied from 4.7 ms at -120 mV to 15 ms at -50 mV. Truncation of the NH2-terminal region of HERG shifted the voltage dependence of activation and inactivation by +20 to +30 mV. In addition, the rate of deactivation of the truncated channel was much faster than wild-type HERG. The mechanism of HERG rectification is voltage-gated fast inactivation. Inactivation of channels proceeds at a much faster rate than activation, such that no outward current is observed upon depolarization to very high membrane potentials. Fast inactivation of HERG and the resulting rectification are partly responsible for the prolonged plateau phase typical of ventricular action potentials.  相似文献

For sequence stratigraphic analysis of extensive carbonate platforms (hundreds of kilometres wide) developed in greenhouse climates on broad, passive margins, less emphasis should be placed on large-scale seismic geometries, and more attention paid to sequence stratigraphic correlation of stratigraphic sections based usually on isolated outcrops. To this end, quantitative analysis of accommodation emerges as a simple, useful tool, that allows detailed architectural reconstructions, regional chronostratigraphical correlation and systems tract interpretation. In this paper, a quantitative analysis of accommodation was applied to the wide platforms that developed in the southern passive continental margin of Iberia during the mid-Cretaceous (late Albian to early middle Cenomanian interval). This analysis was based on several integrated techniques including: (1) construction of total accommodation curves with the aid of backstripping techniques for calculating decompacted sedimentary accumulation through time, (2) mathematical analysis of these curves and characterisation of second- and third-order accommodation patterns, and (3) analysis of parasequence stacking patterns in peritidal cyclic successions by means of Fischer plots. By applying these techniques to eight individual sections logged at the decimetre scale in outcrops of the External Zones of the Betic orogenic belt, it was possible to characterise the second- and third-order accommodation signal for this interval in the basin. The second-order curve defines a long-term sigmoidal pattern of nearly six million years, with low rates of accommodation generation in the first and the last part of the interval, and high rates in the mid-interval. The third-order signal defines six accommodation events of one million years average duration, which controlled the development of six successive depositional sequences and their systems tracts. On the basis of this new sequence stratigraphic framework, a high-resolution, 2-D platform transect, showing the spatial distribution of facies, was erected and analysed. The results notably complete previous qualitative sequence stratigraphic data on the platform and contribute to a better understanding of the nature of systems tracts and their boundaries in response to overlapping of second- and third-order accommodation patterns.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess the possible existence of major genes influencing hip and elbow dysplasia in four dog populations. A Bayesian segregation analysis was performed separately on each population. In total, 34 140 dogs were included in the data set. Data were analysed with both a polygenic and a mixed inheritance model. Polygenic models included fixed and random environmental effects and additive genetic effects. To apply mixed inheritance models, the effect of a major gene was added to the polygenic models. The major gene was modelled as an autosomal biallelic locus with Mendelian transmission probabilities. Gibbs sampling and a Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm were used. The goodness-of-fit of the different models were compared using the residual sum-of-squares. The existence of a major gene was considered likely for hip dysplasia in all the breeds and for elbow dysplasia in one breed. Several procedures were followed to exclude the possible false detection of major genes based on non-normality of data: permuted datasets were analysed, data-transformations were applied, and residuals were judged for normality. Allelic effects at the major gene locus showed nearly to complete dominance, with a recessive, unfavourable allele in both traits. Relatively high estimates of the frequencies of unfavourable alleles in each breed suggest that considerable genetic progress would be possible by selection against major genes. However, the major genes that are possibly affecting hip and elbow dysplasia in these populations will require further study.  相似文献

We have examined the mechanisms underlying the voltage sensitivity of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate receptors in voltage-clamped outside-out patches and whole cells taken from the nucleus magnocellularis of the chick. Responses to either glutamate or kainate had outwardly rectifying current-voltage relations. The rate and extent of desensitization during prolonged exposure to agonist, and the rate of deactivation after brief exposure to agonist, decreased at positive potentials, suggesting that a kinetic transition was sensitive to membrane potential. Voltage dependence of the peak conductance and of the deactivation kinetics persisted when desensitization was reduced with aniracetam or blocked with cyclothiazide. Furthermore, the rate of recovery from desensitization to glutamate was not voltage dependent. Upon reduction of extracellular divalent cation concentration, kainate-evoked currents increased but preserved rectifying current-voltage relations. Rectification was strongest at lower kainate concentrations. Surprisingly, nonstationary variance analysis of desensitizing responses to glutamate or of the current deactivation after kainate removal revealed an increase in the mean single-channel conductance with more positive membrane potentials. These data indicate that the rectification of the peak response to a high agonist concentration reflects an increase in channel conductance, whereas rectification of steady-state current is dominated by voltage-sensitive channel kinetics.  相似文献

Near work is associated with increased activity in the neck and shoulder muscles, but the underlying mechanism is still unknown. This study was designed to determine whether a dynamic change in focus, alternating between a nearby and a more distant visual target, produces a direct parallel change in trapezius muscle activity. Fourteen healthy controls and 12 patients with a history of visual and neck/shoulder symptoms performed a Near-Far visual task under three different viewing conditions; one neutral condition with no trial lenses, one condition with negative trial lenses to create increased accommodation, and one condition with positive trial lenses to create decreased accommodation. Eye lens accommodation and trapezius muscle activity were continuously recorded. The trapezius muscle activity was significantly higher during Near than during Far focusing periods for both groups within the neutral viewing condition, and there was a significant co-variation in time between accommodation and trapezius muscle activity within the neutral and positive viewing conditions for the control group. In conclusion, these results reveal a connection between Near focusing and increased muscle activity during dynamic changes in focus between a nearby and a far target. A direct link, from the accommodation/vergence system to the trapezius muscles cannot be ruled out, but the connection may also be explained by an increased need for eye-neck (head) stabilization when focusing on a nearby target as compared to a more distant target.  相似文献

Wolbachia are very common, maternally transmitted endosymbionts of insects. They often spread by a mechanism termed cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) that involves reduced egg hatch when Wolbachia-free ova are fertilized by sperm from Wolbachia-infected males. Because the progeny of Wolbachia-infected females generally do not suffer CI-induced mortality, infected females are often at a reproductive advantage in polymorphic populations. Deterministic models show that Wolbachia that impose no costs on their hosts and have perfect maternal transmission will spread from arbitrarily low frequencies (though initially very slowly); otherwise, there will be a threshold frequency below which Wolbachia frequencies decline to extinction and above which they increase to fixation or a high stable equilibrium. Stochastic theory was used to calculate the probability of fixation in populations of different size for arbitrary current frequencies of Wolbachia, with special attention paid to the case of spread after the arrival of a single infected female. Exact results are given based on a Moran process that assumes a specific demographic model, and approximate results are obtained using the more general Wright-Fisher theory. A new analytical approximation for the probability of fixation is derived, which performs well for small population sizes. The significance of stochastic effects in the natural spread of Wolbachia and their relevance to the use of Wolbachia as a drive mechanism in vector and pest management are discussed.  相似文献
