Summary In order to describe precisely the fixed action patterns of salmon sexual behavior, we recorded the electromyographic (EMG) activities of trunk and jaw muscles from freely behaving male and female Himé salmon (landlocked sockeye salmon,Oncorhynchus nerka). A series of action patterns (quivering and spawning act in males, digging, covering, prespawning act and spawning act in females, and the swimming and turning movements in both sexes) were characterized by rhythmic activities of the trunk muscles. Each of these activity patterns is quantitatively distinct from the others in such parameters as frequency, bout duration, duty value, intersegmental phase delay, and spatial distribution of rhythmic activities. However, all of these rhythms share a qualitatively homologous pattern with the forward swimming movement: rhythmic activities alternate on both sides of the body (bilateral coupling) and are posteriorly propagated (intersegmental coupling). In addition, a 31 intersegmental phase coupling occurs in the most anterior trunk muscles during the spawning act in some males. Based on these observations, we discussed the biomechanics for these motor patterns (oviposition, ejaculation, body vibration, and mouth opening), and the neural mechanisms for the pattern generation. A possibility was pointed out that the locomotor pattern generator in the spinal cord may be modulated by descending supraspinal signals and recruited to generate such diverse forms of action patterns in sexual behavior.Abbreviations CPG central pattern generator - EMG electromyography - AC adductor mandibulae (cephalic portion) - AM adductor mandibulae (mandibular portion) - DO dilator operculi - GH geniohyoideus - LAP levator arcus palatitni - LPe musculus lateralis profundus (epaxial portion) - LPh musculus lateralis profundus (hypaxial portion) - LS musculus lateralis superficialis - PD protractor dorsalis - PI protractor ischii - RD retractor dorsalis - RI retractor ischii  相似文献

The influence of different treatments (i.e. cold, NaCl, phenol and anaerobiosis) encountered during the smoked salmon process was studied by analysing the survival capacity of two Shewanella putrefaciens strains (CIP 69.29 and J13.1). Our results indicated that only the salt stress was critical for the survival of S. putrefaciens. Nevertheless, both strains of S. putrefaciens grown at low temperatures developed a cross-protection to a lethal NaCl treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report showing that growth at low temperatures induces cross-protection towards NaCl challenge. Moreover, we observed a significant sensitization by moderate salt concentration to a phenol treatment. From our combined data, we propose that control of S. putrefaciens proliferation could take place during the smoked salmon process rather than during storage of the final product.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon are typically anadromous, spending the majority of their lifetime in oceans and returning to fresh water to breed. This diversity of environments likely results in strong selective forces shaping their genome. In this paper, we present the first genomics approach to detect positive selection operating on the Salmo salar (salmon) lineage, an important aquaculture species. We identify a panel of candidate genes that may have been subject to adaptive evolution in this species. In particular, we identify a robust signature of positive selection operating on the salmon CD3γδ gene, which encodes one of the protein chains essential for formation of the T-cell receptor complex and for T-cell activation. Furthermore, we identified the particular codon sites that have been subject to positive selection in fish and highlight two sites flanking an important N-glycosylation site in this molecule. Pink salmon distribution has recently expanded substantially across northern Europe. On the Swedish west coast, relatively few pink salmon have been observed to date; nonetheless, a notable rise in 2021 (70 observations). However, with no national monitoring together with a ceased Atlantic salmon commercial fishery, there is little opportunity to understand the extent of the spread in this region. Here, we present the current data and address the need for future monitoring and research in order to understand the potential impacts of this invasive species in Sweden''s aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Himé salmon (landlocked red salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka) have an elaborate communication system, which ensures synchronous spawning by both sexes and successful fertilization. Both the vibrational and visual signals have been suggested to be involved in this communication system. To characterize these signals, vibrating or stationary three-dimensional models of various types were presented to the male, and male behavior elicited was examined. The results showed that the vibrating model mimicking certain aspects of the female behavior (prespawning act) elicits the spawning in the male (Figs. 2, 3, 5). Furthermore, it was found that (1) the presence of both the vibrational and visual cues (Figs. 6, 7), and (2) spatial coincidence of these two cues (Fig. 8) are necessary for eliciting this behavior. Based on these results it was supposed that the vibrational and visual informations converge at the central nervous system where they are integrated to elicit the spawning.  相似文献

Non-indigenous species may be the most severe environmental threat the world now faces. Fishes, in particular, have been intentionally introduced worldwide and have commonly caused the local extinction of native fish. Despite their importance, the impact of introduced fishes on threatened populations of Pacific salmon has never been systemically examined. Here, we take advantage of several unique datasets from the Columbia River Basin to address the impact of non-indigenous brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, on threatened spring/summer-run chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. More than 41 000 juvenile chinook were individually marked, and their survival in streams without brook trout was nearly double the survival in streams with brook trout. Furthermore, when brook trout were absent, habitat quality was positively associated with chinook survival, but when brook trout were present no relationship between chinook survival and habitat quality was evident. The difference in juvenile chinook survival between sites with, and without, brook trout would increase population growth rate (lambda) by ca. 2.5%. This increase in lambda would be sufficient to reverse the negative population growth observed in many chinook populations. Because many of the populations we investigated occur in wilderness areas, their habitat has been considered pristine; however, our results emphasize that non-indigenous species are present and may have a dramatic impact, even in remote regions that otherwise appear pristine.  相似文献

The timing of river entry in the Atlantic salmon is known to depend on genetic, demographic and environmental factors, but little is known about the relative magnitude of among population and among year variation and covariation in this respect in natural state Atlantic salmon rives. To investigate this, variability in the timing of river entry in three historical Finnish Atlantic salmon populations were analyzed using salmon trap data collected during 1870- 1902. The analyses reveled that 1 ) the timing of river entry differed substantially and consistently among the rivers, and that 2) variation among the rivers was much larger than variation among years. Annual variations were not explained by regional environmental conditions, whereas in one river the timing of the local flood peak was a significant predictor of the timing of river entry. Differences in the timing of salmon entry to geographically closely situated rivers suggests that a regionally fixed opening date for coastal fisheries might not be the best management strategy as it may lead to uneven exploitation of salmon populations from different rivers [ Current Zoology 55 (5) : 342 - 349, 2009] .  相似文献

The changes in the activities of mucus hydrolytic enzymes and plasma cortisol levels were examined following infection of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar with the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis and these changes were compared with those resulting from elevated plasma cortisol. Salmon were infected at high (Trial 1; 178 +/- 67) and low (Trial 2; 20 +/- 13) numbers of lice per fish and the activities of proteases, alkaline phosphatase, esterase and lysozyme in the mucus, as well as plasma cortisol levels were determined. At both levels of infection, there were significant increases of protease activity over time (1-way K-WANOVA; Trial 1, p = 0.004; Trial 2, p < 0.001). On several sampling days, generally on later days in the infections, the mucus protease activities of infected fish were significantly higher than control fish (Student's t-tests; p < 0.05). In addition, zymography experiments demonstrated bands of proteases at 17 to 22 kDa in the mucus of infected salmon that were absent in the mucus from non-infected fish and absent in the plasma of salmon. The intensity of these protease bands increased in the mucus over the course of both infections. However, plasma cortisol levels were elevated only in the heavily infected fish from the first trial. At high infection levels (Trial 1), alkaline phosphatase activity was higher in the mucus of infected fish at all days (t-test, p < 0.05). However, at the lower infection level (Trial 2), the mucus alkaline phosphatase activity did not differ significantly between infected and non-infected fish. Esterase and lysozyme activities were very low and did not change with time nor between non-infected and infected salmon in either challenge. Mucus enzyme activities of cortisol-implanted salmon did not change over time, nor were there any differences in activities between cortisol-implanted and control salmon. The present study demonstrates biochemical changes resulting from sea lice infection of Atlantic salmon occurring at the site of host-pathogen interaction, the mucus layer. However, the origin of these enzymes, whether host or pathogen, remains to be determined.  相似文献

Density‐dependent mortality in Pacific salmon: the ghost of impacts past?   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Conservation biologists often ignore density dependence because at‐risk populations are typically small relative to historical levels. However, if populations are reduced as a result of impacts that lower carrying capacity, then density‐dependent mortality may exist at low population abundances. Here, we explore this issue in threatened populations of juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). We followed the fate of more than 50 000 juvenile chinook in the Snake River Basin, USA to test the hypothesis that their survival was inversely associated with juvenile density. We also tested the hypotheses that non‐indigenous brook trout and habitat quality affect the presence or strength of density dependence. Our results indicate that juvenile chinook suffer density‐dependent mortality and the strength of density dependence was greater in streams in which brook trout were absent. We were unable to detect an effect of habitat quality on the strength of density dependence. Historical impacts of humans have greatly reduced population sizes of salmon, and the density dependence we report may stem from a shortage of nutrients normally derived from decomposing salmon carcasses. Cohorts of juvenile salmon may experience density‐dependent mortality at population sizes far below historical levels and recovery of imperiled populations may be much slower than currently expected.  相似文献

Digestive proteinases were isolated and partially purified from the pyloric ceca of trout and salmon. Their stability and some catalytic properties were compared with those of a three-enzyme system that is used for determination of in vitro protein digestibility. In contrast to the three-enzyme system, pyloric ceca trypsin and total proteinase activity were least stable at pH values below 5.0 and most stable under alkaline conditions up to pH 10.0. Thermal inactivation (50%) occurred in 60 min at 55°C for trypsin activity of trout and salmon ceca proteinases and at 40°C for the three-enzyme system at the pH (8.0) of the in vitro assay. Thermal inactivation (50%) of total proteinase activity occurred in 60 min at about 55, 50 and 35°C for chinook, trout and three-enzyme preparations, respectively. SDS-PAGE zymograms of the ceca enzymes showed the presence of several proteolytic activity bands. Two of the bands corresponded in molecular weight to trypsin and chymotrypsin. Ceca proteinases differ from the three-enzyme system in their response to inhibitors; in particular, the ceca proteinases are much more sensitive to soybean trypsin inhibitor than the procine trypsin used in the three-enzyme system when assayed for trypsin, but less sensitive when assayed for total proteinase. The distinctive properties of ceca enzymes help explain why they are more appropriate than the three-enzyme system, and other enzyme cocktails for in vitro protein digestibility assay of saunonid feed components.  相似文献

This study tested the ‘silver spoon’ hypothesis which posits that individuals that develop under favourable conditions should enjoy a fitness advantage later in life because they are more likely to recognize and settle in high‐quality habitats. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar of two age classes (0+ and 1+ years) were reared in environmentally enriched or standard hatchery tanks for a short period (c. 10 weeks), were then released into a natural river and sampled on repeated occasions to test for silver‐spoon effects. Compared with controls, enriched fish had a 6·4% higher recapture rate and settled in higher velocity habitats when they were stocked as 0+ year fry, but not when they were stocked as 1+ year parr. The opportunity for selection was generally higher for environmentally enriched fish than for controls, and also higher for 0+ than for 1+ year fish. Selection favoured individuals with high condition factor, extensive fat reserves and longer than average pectoral fins in both age classes but favoured a small body size in 1+ year and a large body size in 0+ year releases. Stomach analysis showed that enriched fish ate more, and adapted quicker to natural prey than controls. These results provide support for silver‐spoon effects in fish and indicate that enrichment can improve post‐release performance in conservation programmes, but seemingly only if fish are not kept in captivity for too long.  相似文献

A capillary electrophoretic method (CE) was developed for the determination of the PEG-modification sites of three positional isomers of mono-PEG modified salmon calcitonins (mono-PEG-sCTs). Resistance to proteolytic degradation on the PEG modification sites resulted in different patterns of CE electropherograms for the tryptic digested mono-PEG-sCTs isomers, and the PEG modification sites were assigned accordingly. The PEG-modification sites were also confirmed directly by determining the molecular masses of the tryptic digested PEG-modified fragments of respective mono-PEG-sCT by the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI–TOF) mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Summary The -glutamyl cycle is considered to function in the membrane transport of amino acids, particularly glutamine and cysteine. When groups of Atlantic salmon were fed either a control diet containing 45% crude protein or an amino acid diet (of similar overall amino acid composition but containing elevated levels of glutamine and cysteine) for 16 weeks, weight gains were significantly greater in the former group than in those given the amino acid diet. There were no significant differences between treatments in -glutamyl transpeptidase (GT) activity in the proximal intestine; in distal intestine there was significantly more activity in control fish. Mean levels of GSH were higher in tissues (pyloric caeca, distal intestine and kidney) of amino acid diet fish than in those of control fish. Glutamine was less effective as a -glutamyl acceptor than several other amino acids when tested with salmon caecal GT. There were no morphological adaptations to the two feeds. Nutrient uptake studies showed an increased uptake of glutamine, but decreased uptakes of proline and methionine in proximal intestine of salmon fed amino acid diet. Much the greater part of the glutamine uptake, even at high concentrations was shown to be by Na+ dependent processes. There is no evidence that GT itself is Na+ dependent. The results do not support the view that the -glutamyl cycle and GT in particular are involved in the transport of amino acids in the intestine and are discussed in this context.Abbreviations GT -glutamayl transpeptidase - GSH reduced glutathione  相似文献

Short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs), known as theHpaI family, are present in the genomes of all salmonid species (Kido et al.,Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 1991, 88: 2326–2330). Recently, we showed that the retropositional efficiency of the SINE family in the lineage of chum salmon is extraordinarily high in comparison with that in other salmonid lineages (Takasaki et al.,Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 1994, 91: 10153–10157). To investigate the reason for this high efficiency, we searched for members of theHpaI SINE family that have been amplified species-specifically in pink salmon. Since the efficiency of the species-specific amplification in pink salmon is not high and since other members of the same subfamily of SINEs were also amplified species-specifically in pink salmon, the actual sequence of this subfamily might not be the cause of the high retropositional efficiency of SINEs in chum salmon. Rather, it appears that a highly dominant source gene for the subfamily may have been newly created by retroposition, and some aspect of the local environment around the site of retroposition may have been responsible for the creation of this dominant source gene in chum salmon. Furthermore, a total of 11 sequences ofHpaI SINEs that have been amplified species-specifically in three salmon lineages was compiled and characterized. Judging from the distribution of members of the same-sequence subfamily of SINEs in different lineages and from the distribution of the different-sequence subfamilies in the same lineage, we have concluded that multiple dispersed loci are responsible for the amplification of SINEs. We also discuss the additional possibility of horizontal transmission of SINEs between species. The availability of the sets of primers used for the detection of the species-specific amplifications of the SINEs provides a convenient and reliable method for identification of these salmonid species.  相似文献

Throughout Europe there is considerable concern about the potential impact of sawbill ducks Mergus spp. and great cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo on catches of commercial fish (reviews by Marquiss & Carss, 1994; Russell et al ., 1996). A prerequisite to estimating impact is to quantify the consumption of commercially important fish by birds. This requires site-specific data on (1) bird numbers, (2) their daily food intake and (3) diet. Considerable effort has been directed at quantifying (2) and (3) and exploring the biases associated with different methods (see Carss et al ., 1997 for review).  相似文献

Seabirds and large fishes are important top predators in marine ecosystems, but few studies have explored the potential for competition between these groups. This study investigates the relationship between an observed biennial change of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) biomass in the central Bering Sea (23 times greater in odd-numbered than in even-numbered years) and the body condition and diet of the short-tailed shearwater (Puffinus tenuirostris) that spends the post-breeding season there. Samples were collected with research gill nets over seven summers. Both species feed on krill, small fishes and squid. Although the mean pink salmon catch per unit effort (in mass) over the study region was not related significantly with shearwater's stomach content mass or prey composition, the pink salmon biomass showed a negative and significant relationship with the shearwater's body mass and liver mass (proxies of energy reserve). We interpret these results as evidence that fishes can negatively affect mean prey intake of seabirds if they feed on a shared prey in the pelagic ecosystem.  相似文献

The risk of infanticide may alter foraging decisions made by females, which otherwise would have been based on nutritional requirements and forage quality and availability. In systems where meat resources are spatially aggregated in late summer and fall, female brown bears ( Ursus arctos) would be faced with a trade-off situation. The need of reproductive females to accumulate adequate fat stores would likely result in a decision to frequent salmon streams and consume the protein- and lipid-rich spawning salmon. In contrast, aggregations of bears along salmon streams would create conditions of high risk of infanticide. We investigated consumption of salmon by brown bears on Admiralty and Chichagof Islands in Southeast Alaska from 1982 to 2000 using stable isotope analysis and radiotelemetry. While nearly all males (22 of 23) consumed relatively large amounts of salmon (i.e., >10% relative contribution to seasonal diet), not all females ( n =56) did so. Five of 26 females for which we had reproductive data, occupied home ranges that had no access to salmon and thus did not consume salmon when they were mated or accompanied by young. Of females that had access to salmon streams ( n =21), all mated individuals ( n =16) had 15N values indicative of salmon consumption. In contrast, 4 out of 16 females with cubs avoided consuming salmon altogether, and of the other 12, 3 consumed less salmon than they did when they were mated. For 11 of 21 females with access to salmon streams we had data encompassing both reproductive states. Five of those altered foraging strategies and exhibited significantly lower values of 15N when accompanied by young than when mated, while 6 did not. Radiotelemetry data indicated that females with spring cubs were found, on average, further away from streams during the spawning season compared with females with no young, but both did not differ from males and females with yearlings and 2-year-olds. Females with young that avoided salmon streams were significantly lighter indicating that female choice to avoid consumption of salmon carries a cost that may translate to lower female or cub survivorship. The role of the social hierarchy of males and females, mating history, and paternity in affecting the risk of infanticide and foraging decisions of female brown bears merit further investigation.  相似文献
