Shoot uptake of mineral nutrients (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, mg, Mn, P, S, Zn) by Agrostis stolonifera L. was compared with Festuca ovina L. under wet and dry cycles. Such conditions are typical for A. stolonifera sites, whereas F. ovina is growing mostly on consistently drier and better-drained soils. Plants were grown in a glasshouse, at controlled temperature and light conditions, using two moisture regimes, one constant at 60% WHC (water holding capacity), one wet/dry fluctuating between 35 and 100% WHC. Above ground and total biomass production was lower under wet/dry treatment than at constant water regime in F. ovina, but did not differ between regimes in A. stolonifera. Shoot uptake of most elements was severely reduced in F. ovina at the wet/dry regime. Shoot uptake and concentrations of most elements studied (Cu, K, Mn, P, S, Zn) were lower (p<0.05) under wet/dry treatment than at constant regime in A. stolonifera and tended to be lower also of Fe and Mg. Differences in biomass production observed are consistent with field evidence that A. stolonifera grows in sites which are periodically flooded but may become quite dry during other periods, and that F. ovina is limited to sites which are consistently drier and better drained. Evidence from the present study, however, does not support any view that alternating wet and dry cycles, as typical of A. stolonifera field sites, would be beneficial to nutrient acquisition of this species but that biomass production may develop normally at the lower uptake of most mineral nutrients measured under the wet/dry regime. Such regimes are decidedly unfavourable to both growth and nutrient acquisition of F. ovina.  相似文献

The response of rice toAzolla caroliniana, newly introduced in India, was compared with the reponse to the local isolate ofAzolla pinnata at varying rates of phosphate fertilizer (4.4–8.8 kg P ha–1) during a wet and a dry season.Fresh weight, dry weight and fixed N were more for both species 21 DAI (days after inoculation) than 14 DAI, but acetylene reduction activity (ARA) was higher 14 DAI than 21 DAI. Dry weight of Azolla and fixed N were less 14 DAI forA. caroliniana than forA. pinnata during the wet season. Twenty-one DAI, fresh weight ofA. caroliniana was 62.1 and 27.6% higher than that ofA. pinnata during the wet and dry season, respectively. However, dry weight and fixed N were more 21 DAI inA. caroliniana than inA. pinnata during only the wet season. The ARA was higher inA. caroliniana both 14 and 21 DAI, irrespective of season. The presence of either species in the rice field increased grain yield, straw yield, number of panicles m–2, number of grains per panicle and reduced percentage sterility during both the wet and the dry season. Phosphate application significantly increased fresh weight, dry weight, ARA and fixed N for both species as well as grain and straw yields of rice. The responses to phosphate fertilizer were similar for both Azolla species and for rice grown with either one of the Azolla species.  相似文献

Summary We investigated relationships between light availability, diel acid fluctuation, and resource storage in the arborescent cactus Opuntia excelsa growing in western Mexico. We compared canopy and understory individuals from a deciduous forest as well as open-grown plants of the same approximate size as those in the understory. During the wet season light availability and daily fluctuations in titratable acidity (an index of carbon uptake) were lower in the understory than in unshaded habitats. In the dry season all plants had reduced levels of acid fluctuation, with the smallest individuals, regardless of habitat, showing the greatest reduction. These data suggest that light availability in the forest understory constrains carbon assimilation during the wet season, but that a factor associated with plant size, possibly water status, limits carbon gain during the dry season. Plants in all habitats remained physiologically active for at least five months into the dry season. We suggest that this was possible due to the maintenance of constant concentrations of water and nitrogen in the photosynthetically active chlorenchyma. Parenchyma in terminal cladodes showed a different seasonal pattern of resource storage; water content and nitrogen concentration were reduced from the wet to the dry season in the parenchyma. Using the parenchyma to supply photosynthetic tissues during times of reduced resource availability allows O. excelsa to assimilate carbon during times of the year when most other trees in the forest are leafless.  相似文献

We studied water trnaslocation between interconnected mother and daughter ramets in two rhizomatous Carex species, using a newly developed quantitative method based on deuterium tracing. Under homogeneous conditions, in which both ramets were subjected either to wet or dry soil, little water was exchanged between the ramets. When the ramet pair was exposed to a heterogeneous water supply, water translocation became unidirectional and strongly increased to a level at which 30–60% of the water acquired by the wet ramet was exported towards the dry ramet. The quantity of water translocated was unrelated to the difference in water potential between the ramets, but highly correlated to the difference in leaf area. In both species, the transpiration of the entire plant was similar under heterogeneous and homogeneous wet conditions. This was a direct result of an increase in water uptake by the wet ramet in response to the dry conditions experienced by the interconnected ramet. In C. hirta, the costs and benefits of integration in terms of ramet biomass paralleled the responses of water consumption. This species achieved a similar whole-plant biomass in heterogeneous and homogeneous wet treatments, and water translocation was equally effective in the acropetal and basipetal directions. In C. flacca, responses of biomass and water consumption did not match and, under some conditions, water translocation imposed costs rather than benefits to the plants of this species. It is concluded that enhanced resource acquisition by donor ramets may be of critical importance for the net benefits of physiological integration in clonal plants.  相似文献

Dik-diks (Madoqua sp.) inhabit semi-arid regions and experience very different conditions of food availability and quality between wet and dry seasons. By comparing the behaviour of dik-diks between these two seasons, we identified environmental constraints affecting their feeding strategies. In both seasons foraging time was limited by high mid day temperatures. In the wet season a high intake rate compensates for the loss in foraging time, but in the dry season water and protein become limiting. To meet minimum daily water requirements in the dry season dik-diks fed on plant species that they avoided during the wet season. Analysis at the plant species level showed higher species selectivity in the wet season than in the dry season. In a multiple regression analysis food species preferences were best explained by relative abundance and water content in the dry season, and by dry matter content in the wet season. In the wet season the daily dry-matter intake of dik-diks in the field was only about 10% higher than the theoretically predicted minimum for a ruminant of this body weight, while protein and water intake were about 3 times as high. This suggests that the most limiting dietary component in the wet season is energy. In the dry season the daily intake of all dietary components is lower than the theoretical minimum required, and also lower than the values suggested by laboratory studies of dik-diks. This dry season deficit is presumably met from body reserves. Dry season water intake was approximately 30% of the intake observed in laboratory studies indicating that dikdiks are even better adapted to arid conditions than suggested by physiological experiments.  相似文献

Bacterial contamination is an ongoing problem for commercial fuel ethanol production facilities. Both chronic and acute infections are of concern, due to the fact that bacteria compete with the ethanol-producing yeast for sugar substrates and micronutrients. Lactic acid levels often rise during bouts of contamination, suggesting that the most common contaminants are lactic acid bacteria. However, quantitative surveys of commercial corn-based fuel ethanol facilities are lacking. For this study, samples were collected from one wet mill and two dry grind fuel ethanol facilities over a 9 month period at strategic time points and locations along the production lines, and bacterial contaminants were isolated and identified. Contamination in the wet mill facility consistently reached 106 bacteria/ml. Titers from dry grind facilities were more variable but often reached 108/ml. Antibiotics were not used in the wet mill operation. One dry grind facility added antibiotic to the yeast propagation tank only, while the second facility dosed the fermentation with antibiotic every 4 h. Neither dosing procedure appeared to reliably reduce overall contamination, although the second facility showed less diversity among contaminants. Lactobacillus species were the most abundant isolates from all three plants, averaging 51, 38, and 77% of total isolates from the wet mill and the first and second dry grind facilities, respectively. Although populations varied over time, individual facilities tended to exhibit characteristic bacterial profiles, suggesting the occurrence of persistent endemic infections.Names are necessary to report factually on available data; however, the USDA neither guarantees nor warrants the standard of the product, and the use of the name by USDA implies no approval of the product to the exclusion of others that may also be suitable.  相似文献

Following a solid phase extraction, GC-MS and GC-FID procedures, the production of three kaurane derivatives (grandiflorenic, kaurenoic and monoginoic acids) was detected in callus and cell suspension batch cultures of Montanoa tomentosa. From different hormonal combinations, the addition of 0.5 mg 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid l–1 + 2 mg kinetin l–1 increased the accumulation of total kaurenoids in 6 months old calluses to 2.1 mg g–1 dry weight and in cell suspensions cultures up to 0.76 mg g–1 dry weight. Monoginoic acid, which has not been detected before in leaves of wild plants, accumulated in both in vitro systems.  相似文献

为探讨影响传粉蜂子代数量及性比的因素,以广州地区分布的粗叶榕(Ficus hirta Vahl)及其传粉小蜂爪哇榕小蜂(Valasia javana Mayr)为材料,采用自然收蜂与控制放蜂试验进行研究。结果表明,果内的榕小蜂群落随季节更替发生显著变化,非传粉蜂的介入、季节差异使雌蜂间的干扰强度不同,导致传粉蜂子代数量发生变化,其中雌蜂间的干扰会使传粉蜂性比显著升高,而非传粉蜂的介入对传粉蜂性比的影响不大,传粉蜂仍能正常地进行繁殖。另外,传粉蜂在雌花期雄花序内的产卵和存活时间一般较短,约为15 h;传粉蜂子代在干、湿季的雄花序内的发育时间差异显著,干季时间长,湿季时间短。这表明传粉榕小蜂进化出了适应广州地区季节变化的繁殖策略。  相似文献

Changes in lipid class, fatty acid composition, protein, and dry and wet weights of fertilized eggs and developing larvae of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) fed with the live food, Artemia, were investigated. A decrease of wet and dry weights and moisture was observed at the beginning of the larval stage. Larvae regained the original moisture level, and wet and dry weights increased steadily after feeding. Total lipids decreased from 190 μg/egg in fertilized eggs to 151 μg/egg during hatching and increased after feeding. When total lipid contents were expressed as a percentage of larval dry weight, a decline of lipid did not occur until after feeding. Total protein, on the other hand, increased right after feeding, but there was some variation between days. Polar lipids increased significantly from 20 μg/egg at the egg stage to 199 μg/larva at 26 days post-hatching (DPH), 2 days before the onset of metamorphosis, while neutral lipids declined from 175 μg/egg to 80 μg/larva during the same time period. Wax/steryl esters decreased from 150 μg/egg in fertilized eggs to 32 μg/larva at 26 DPH. Triacylglycerols dropped from 21 μg/egg to 15 μg/larva before feeding and increased gradually after feeding. In contrast, the level of cholesterol increased 2–3-fold. There was a significant increase of phospholipids, particularly phosphatidylcholine in larvae after feeding. The fatty acid composition of fish larvae was significantly influenced by the diet, Artemia. There was an indication of catabolism of endogenous eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids during metamorphosis.  相似文献

To understand the relationships between the distribution of Chosenia arbutifolia and Salix sachalinensis and their mycorrhizal colonization, changes in the quality and types of ectomycorrhizas and arbuscular mycorrhizas of the seedlings of two species were studied at five different sites with different soil conditions in the floodplain of the Satsunai River, Hokkaido. High ectomycorrhizal and low arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization were found in roots of both plants. Ectomycorrhizal colonization of S. sachalinensis in wet sandy or muddy soil conditions was at the same level as that in dry gravelly sites. In contrast, ectomycorrhizal colonization of C. arbutifolia seedlings was lower from wet sandy sites than that from dry gravelly sites. In all study sites, the same three morphological types of ectomycorrhizas were dominant.  相似文献

Summary Mice (Peromyscus melanotis) immigrate extensively to overwintering colonies of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in México. There they feed on both live and dead butterflies that accumulate on the ground and in low vegetation. Through a series of feeding experiments, we examined the potential impact of mouse predation on these colonies, as well as how this predation was influenced by the accessibility and the degree of desiccation of the monarchs. Mice attacked on average 39.9 wet (freshlykilled) butterflies per night. We estimated that a population of mice (75–105 individuals) could kill approximately 0.40–0.57 million butterflies in a 1 ha colony (4–5.7% of the colony) over the 135-day overwintering season. In feeding experiments, mice fed disproportionately on: 1) wet (hydrated) monarchs close to the ground versus those perched higher; 2) wet monarchs, when both wet and dry (desiccated) monarchs were on the ground; and 3) wet monarchs on stakes versus dry monarchs on the ground. Mice commonly ate the entire abdomen of dry monarchs, whereas they fed selectively on the abdomen of wet monarchs by discarding the bitter, cardenolide-laden cuticle and eating the internal tissues. These results suggest that the monarchs' state of desiccation is more important than their accessibility in determining the feeding preferences of these mice. However, the monarchs' strong tendency to crawl up vegetation does appear to reduce their risk to mouse predation.  相似文献

Females of the central European population of the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi, did not attack wet pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) that were washed previously with water. After 1 hour, this phenomenon disappeared and A. ervi attacked washed hosts to the same degree as dry ones. Similarly, A. ervi attacked dead aphids killed in liquid nitrogen readily if they were dry but not if they were wet. This effect was also reversible and disappeared after 1 h. When A. ervi females were foraging on broad beans (Vicia faba), they laid significantly more eggs into dry aphids than into wet aphids. Resource utilization of wet aphids, however, was significantly lower in this design than in Petri dishes, due to a changed drop-off behaviour of the aphid. We conclude that females did not use visual cues for host recognition but instead relied on chemical cues. These cues may be covered by a thin water layer directly after aphids became wet. Our results also demonstrate the importance of abiotic factors for the estimation of the reproductive success of parasitoids in the field.  相似文献

Willows usually establish on wet substrates with fine sediments at sites that are created by large disturbances, but suitable microsites are spatially and temporally limited. Thus, we hypothesized that willow seeds are selectively dispersed to suitable microsites, such as those with a wet substrate, rather than unsuitable microsites, such as those with a dry substrate, with seedling establishment mediated by the cottony hairs attached to seeds (directed dispersal). To test our hypothesis, we compared several recruitment-related traits, including buoyancy, germination, and trapping at favorable microsites, in seeds of the riparian willows Salix sachalinensis and S. integra with and without cottony hairs in laboratory and field experiments. In both field and laboratory experiments, more seeds with cottony hairs were trapped in water and wet sand than in dry sand, in which no seeds of either species germinated. These results indicate that cottony hairs facilitate the recruitment of seeds to microsites favorable for seed germination and help seeds avoid unfavorable microsites. On the water surface, 17.6% of S. sachalinensis seeds and 68.0% S. integra seeds with cottony hairs floated for more than 6 days, whereas all seeds without cottony hairs sank immediately after being placed on the water surface. These results suggest that cottony hairs facilitate long-distance dispersal via flowing water and also help avoid germination under water, where willow seedlings fail to establish. Seeds of the two willow species were released from the cottony hairs and germinated immediately after the seeds were placed on wet sand, but not after placement on water or dry sand. These results suggest that the seeds are released from the cottony hairs when the hairs become wet and the seeds are striking to a suitable microsite for seedling establishment, such as wet sand. In riparian willows, the cottony hairs promote directed dispersal by moving seeds to discrete and predictable microsites where the seedling establishment is disproportionately high.  相似文献

The frillneck lizard, Chlamydosaurus kingii, is a conspicuous component of the fauna of the wetdry tropics of northern Australia during the wet season, but it is rarely seen in the dry season. Previous studies have demonstrated that during the dry season the field metabolic rate (FMR) is only about one-quarter of the wet-season rate, and one factor involved in this seasonal drop is a change in the behavioural thermoregulation of the species such that lower body temperatures (T bs) are selected during dry-season days. Here we examine other factors that could be responsible for the seasonal change in FMR: standard metabolic rates (SMR) and activity. Samples from stomach flushing revealed that the lizards in the dry season continued to feed, but the volume of food was half as much as in the wet season. SMR in the laboratory was 30% less in the dry season. During the dry season, the energy expended by the lizards is 60.4 kJ kg-1 day-1 less than during the wet season. Combining laboratory and field data, we determined the relative contribution of the factors involved in this energy savings: 10% can be attributed to lower nighttime T b, 12% is attributable to lower daytime T b, 12% is attributable to decreased metabolism, and the remaining 66% is attributable to other activities (including e.g. locomotion, reproductive costs, digestion). Calculations indicate that if FMR did not drop in the dry season the lizards would not survive on the observed food intake during this season. Seasonal analysis of blood plasma and urine indicated an accumulation of some electrolytes during the dry season suggesting modest levels of water stress.  相似文献

华北落叶松人工林蒸散及产流对叶面积指数变化的响应   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
定量评价林地蒸散和产流等水文过程对冠层叶面积指数(LAI)的响应,对于深入认识森林植被的生态水文过程及其发生机制,实现半干旱区林水综合管理和区域可持续发展是非常必要的。应用集总式生态水文模型BROOK90,模拟分析了不同降水年型(丰水年、平水年、枯水年)下,位于半干旱区的宁夏六盘山叠叠沟小流域内华北落叶松(Larix principis-rupprechtii)人工林的水文过程对冠层LAI变化的响应关系。结果发现:林分总蒸散量、冠层截留量、蒸腾量与LAI都呈显著的正相关关系(R~20.99,P0.01),而土壤蒸发量、产流量则与LAI均呈显著的负相关关系(R~20.99,P0.01);在不同的降水年型下,各水文过程变量与LAI的关系都可以很好地用指数函数来表达,且都存在着一个LAI阈值。当LAI低于阈值时,各水文过程变量随LAI的变化幅度较大;但高于阈值时,各变量的变化十分缓慢并趋于稳定。在不同降水年型下,各变量LAI阈值之间存在着一定的差异。一般地,丰水年各变量的LAI阈值要大于枯水年,尤其是冠层截留和土壤蒸发。在丰水年,各水文过程变量随LAI增加而变化的速率要比在平水年、枯水年更快,说明在水分充足年份中各变量的波动更多取决于LAI变化,而在水分亏缺的年份中则可能更多地受到水分条件的限制。模拟结果表明,通过减少冠层LAI(如间伐)导致的林分的降低蒸散耗水和增加产流的作用是有限的,这是由于林分蒸散降低的幅度要比LAI降低的幅度小。例如,在平水年,当LAI从4.2变为2.0(减少幅度52.4%)时,林分年蒸散仅从357.2 mm减少至333.9 mm(减少幅度6.5%)。  相似文献

Summary Numbers of autotrophic nitrifiers in the rhizosphere, and thein vivo nitrate reductase activity (NRA) in the leaves of individual plants ofPlantago lanceolata were determined in plants at two contrasting sites. In a dune grassland, high numbers of nitrifiers were present in the rhizosphere, and significant NRA was detected in the leaves. During dry periods nitrate utilization sometimes was depressed. In a wet hayfield, on peat soil, very low numbers of nitrifiers were found in the rhizosphere. Also the NRA was low. In the wet habitat, the NRA in the leaves of some fen species, containing aerenchyma in the roots, was higher than that ofP. lanceolata, not containing aerenchyma.Grassland Species Research Group. This study confirmed that steeping sugar-beet seed in 0.3 M hydrochloric acid for 2 h as the first part of a 12 h treatment, substantially improved performance under cold, wet conditions. Smaller benefits were also found in warmer, drier tests; no detrimental effects were found. Adding excess sodium hydroxide at the end of the acid steep further improved the growth of the inherently slower part of the population under cold, wet conditions. Steeping seed in acid or acid followed by alkali also controlled Phoma betae as effectively as the current commercial thiram step treatment.  相似文献

通过野外原位试验,研究降雨量改变对华西雨屏区常绿阔叶林干旱和湿润季节土壤呼吸速率的影响。采用LI-8100土壤碳通量分析系统(LI-COR Inc.,USA)测定干旱和湿润季节对照(CK)、增雨10%(LA)、增雨5%(TA)、减雨10%(LR)、减雨20%(MR)、减雨50%(HR)6个处理水平的土壤呼吸速率,并通过回归方程分析温度和湿度与土壤呼吸速率间的关系。结果表明:湿润季节土壤呼吸速率高于干旱季节,HR处理对干旱季节土壤呼吸速率影响较大,而LA处理对湿润季节土壤呼吸速率的影响较大。TA和LR处理使土壤呼吸的温度敏感性增加,而HR、LA和MR处理使土壤呼吸的温度敏感性降低,干旱季节Q10值高于湿润季节。各处理湿润季节土壤微生物量碳氮含量显著高于干旱季节,HR、MR和LA处理减少土壤微生物生物量碳、氮的含量,而TA和LR处理增加土壤微生物生物量碳、氮的含量。与湿润季节相比,干旱季节土壤水分对土壤呼吸速率的影响较大;而与土壤温度相比,土壤水分对土壤呼吸速率的影响较小。在降雨量改变的背景下,华西雨屏区常绿阔叶林无论是干旱还是湿润季节,适当增雨和减雨都会促进土壤呼吸速率,而较高量的增雨和减雨会抑制土壤呼吸速率。  相似文献

Field experiments (20 m2 plots) were conducted to compare Azolla and urea as N sources for rice (Oryza sativa L.) in both the wet and dry seasons. Parallel microplot (1 m2) experiments were conducted using 15N. A total of approximately 60 kg N ha-1 was applied as urea, Azolla, or urea plus Azolla. Urea or Azolla applied with equal applications of 30 kg N ha-1 at transplanting (T) and at maximum tillering (MT) were equally effective for increasing rice grain yields in both seasons. Urea at 30 kg N ha-1 at T and Azolla 30 kg N ha-1 at MT was also equally effective. Urea applied by the locally recommended best split (40 kg at T and 20 kg at MT) gave a higher yield in the wet season, but an equal yield in the dry season. The average yield increase was 23% in the wet season, and 95% in the dry season. The proportion of the N taken up by the rice plants which was derived from urea (%NdfU) or Azolla (%NdfAz) was essentially identical for the treatments receiving the same N split. Recovery of 15N in the grain plus straw was also very similar. Positive yield responses to residual N were observed in the succeeding rice crop following both the wet and dry seasons, but the increases were not always statistically significant. Recovery of residual 15N ranged from 5.5 to 8.9% for both crops in succeeding seasons. Residual recovery from the urea applications was significantly higher than from Azolla in the crop succeeding the dry season crop. Azolla was equally effective as urea as an N source for rice production on a per kg N basis.  相似文献

In order to understand the impact of habitat changes on ecosystem processes caused by increased populations of elephants, elephant dung decomposition was studied in semi-arid Botswana. Dung decomposition rates were studied with and without the presence of arthropods, using pairs of exposed dung and dung enclosed in nylon-mesh bags, respectively. Dung decomposition rates were lower in the absence of arthropods. The rates in the late wet season were higher in the scrubland than in the woodland. In the early dry season, immediately after the wet season, the rates were higher in the woodland than in the scrubland. The difference in decomposition rates between habitats was attributed to microclimatic conditions created by vegetation cover. With regard to fungal succession, Cladosporium cladosporioides and Eurotium brefeldianum occurred only in the late stages of dung decomposition whereas Talaromyces helicus, Cercophora coprophila and Sporormiella minima occurred in all the stages. Although there was no significant difference in Shannon–Weiner fungal species diversity index between habitats, seasons, dung ages and laboratory incubation periods, there were significant differences in fungal community composition between these parameters. Species richness was higher in the late wet season than in the early dry season, indicating the importance of moist conditions for a large diversity of fungal species.  相似文献
