Host seeking by the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae) is mainly guided by volatile chemicals present in human odours. The skin microbiota plays an important role in the production of these volatiles, and skin bacteria grown on agar plates attract An. gambiae s.s. in the laboratory. In this study, the attractiveness of volatiles produced by human skin bacteria to An. gambiae s.s. was tested in laboratory, semi‐field, and field experiments to assess these effects in increasing environmental complexity. A synthetic blend of 10 compounds identified in the headspace of skin bacteria was also tested for its attractiveness. Carbon dioxide significantly increased mosquito catches of traps baited with microbial volatiles in the semi‐field experiments and was therefore added to the field traps. Traps baited with skin bacteria caught significantly more An. gambiae s.s. than control traps, both in the laboratory and semi‐field experiments. Traps baited with the synthetic blend caught more mosquitoes than control traps in the laboratory experiments, but not in the semi‐field experiments. Although bacterial volatiles increased mosquito catches in the field study, trapping several mosquito vector species, these effects were not significant for An. gambiae s.l. It is concluded that volatiles from skin bacteria affect mosquito behaviour under laboratory and semi‐field conditions and, after fine tuning, have the potential to be developed as odour baits for mosquitoes. 相似文献

For collecting mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) the outdoor catching efficiency of four types of trapping devices baited with carbon dioxide (CO2, 300 ml/ min) was evaluated and compared in two areas of Tanzania. The types of traps employed were: the CDC miniature trap with the incandescent light bulb switched on or off; electric nets (ENT) and a Counterflow Geometry (CFG) trap. In Njage, southeast Tanzania, Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto was the most abundant of the seven mosquito species obtained, comprising of 74.3% of the total number caught (n=2,171). In Muheza, north-east Tanzania, Culex quinquefasciatus Say was the predominant species (90.9%) among 1,080 caught. At both localities the CFG trap was superior to the CDC trap with light-on or light-off for sampling both An. gambiae and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Efficiency of the CFG trap and ENT were similar for sampling these species of mosquitoes (P > 0.05). However, ENT was superior to the CDC trap with light-off for collecting both species. Significantly more (P < 0.05) Cx. quinquefasciatus were obtained by the CDC trap with light-off than with light-on, especially outdoors. It is concluded that both ENT and the CFG are effective tools for sampling populations of An. gambiae and Cx. quinquefasciatus outdoors. 相似文献

Several kinds of traps are available for the collection of Culicidae species creating nuisance problems and/or a potential risk of pathogen transmission. The choice of the most appropriate sampling device should take into consideration the objective of the monitoring activity (e.g., faunistic research, vector control evaluation, arbovirus surveillance, etc.), the ecological and behavioral characteristics of the target mosquito species, and the ecology of the sampling areas. However, there are few factual criteria technical personnel can rely on to choose the most suitable sampling method, particularly when the targets are represented by mosquito species in temperate areas. We carried out a Latin square experiment in three ecologically different settings in Mantua municipality (northern Italy) to compare the performance of four different traps targeting host-seeking mosquitoes: two traps specifically designed for mosquito monitoring purposes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CO(2) trap and Biogents BG Eisenhans de Luxe trap) and two designed to reduce mosquito densities in outdoor domestic settings (Activa Acti Power Trap PV 440 and Activa Acti Power Trap MT 250 Plus). Overall, 1,930 specimens belonging to nine species were collected and differences in the performance of the four traps with reference to their ability to detect overall species diversity, as well as to collect single species, were highlighted. These observations, coupled with an analysis of the costs associated with the trap's purchase, operation, and servicing, provide useful indications for the implementation of mosquito monitoring in temperate areas. 相似文献

Abstract. Female Anopheles gambiae Giles mosquitoes were observed individually in a cage within a wind tunnel and their responses to pulses of carbon dioxide recorded on video tape. The range of concentrations tested revealed an 'activation' threshold concentration of carbon dioxide in the region of 0.01% above background. At this concentration, approximately 60% of the mosquitoes took off and flew upwind. Pulses of human breath, diluted with wind tunnel air to reproduce equivalent concentrations of carbon dioxide, elicited similar levels of response and the same 'activation' threshold concentration. These findings are discussed in relation to the activation of host-seeking mosquitoes. 相似文献

Surveillance of medically important mosquitoes is critical to determine the risk of mosquito‐borne disease transmission. The purpose of this research was to test self‐supporting, exposure‐free bednet traps to survey mosquitoes. In the laboratory we tested human‐baited and unbaited CDC light trap/cot bednet (CDCBN) combinations against three types of traps: the Mbita Trap (MIBITA), a Tent Trap (TENT), and a modified Townes style Malaise trap (TSM). In the laboratory, 16 runs comparing MBITA, TSM, and TENT to the CDCBN were conducted for a total of 48 runs of the experiment using 13,600 mosquitoes. The TENT trap collected significantly more mosquitoes than the CDCBN. The CDCBN collected significantly more than the MBITA and there was no difference between the TSM and the CDCBN. Two field trials were conducted in Cibuntu, Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. The first test compared human‐baited and unbaited CDCBN, TENT, and TSM traps during six nights over two consecutive weeks per month from January, 2007 to September, 2007 for a total of 54 trapnights. A total of 8,474 mosquitoes representing 33 species were collected using the six trapping methods. The TENT‐baited trap collected significantly more mosquitoes than both the CDCBN and the TSM. The second field trial was a comparison of the baited and unbaited TENT and CDCBN traps and Human Landing Collections (HLCs). The trial was carried out from January, 2008 to May, 2008 for a total of 30 trap nights. A total of 11,923 mosquitoes were collected representing 24 species. Human Landing Collections captured significantly more mosquitoes than either the TENT or the CDCBN. The baited and unbaited TENT collected significantly more mosquitoes than the CDCBN. The TENT trap was found to be an effective, light‐weight substitute for the CDC light‐trap, bednet combination in the field and should be considered for use in surveys of mosquito‐borne diseases such as malaria, arboviruses, and filariasis. 相似文献

The insecticidal activity of essential oils from 12 species of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) was evaluated on larvae of Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae), the most important vector of dengue and yellow fever in the Americas. Oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry; yields ranged from 0.2 to 2.5%. Essential oils were mainly composed of 1,8‐cineole, α‐pinene, α‐phellandrene, β‐phellandrene, γ‐terpinene, 4‐terpineol, α‐terpineol, p‐cymene, and spathulenol. Larvicidal effects were tested on susceptible third or fourth stage Ae. aegypti larvae, determining median lethal concentration (LC50) and median effective concentration (EC50). Essential oils from Eucalyptus dunnii (Maiden), Eucalyptus gunnii (Hook), Eucalyptus tereticornis (Smith), Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Dehn), and Eucalyptus saligna (Smith) showed the best larvicidal activities with LC50 values of 25.2, 21.1, 22.1, 26.8, and 22.2, respectively. No significant differences were observed between LC50 and EC50 values of the same oil. Regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between total essential oil yields and 1,8‐cineole concentration. Significant relationships were also revealed between larval mortality and the concentration of 1,8‐cineole and p‐cymene. This indicated that Eucalyptus species with high oil yields have higher 1,8‐cineole concentrations and lower p‐cymene concentrations and have less effect on Ae. aegypti. Our results suggest the potential of controlled crossing methods to obtain Eucalyptus trees with chemical profiles having enhanced activity against this mosquito. 相似文献

ield studies were conducted in the Upper Rhine Valley to determine the responses of mosquitoes to CDC traps baited with either CO2 , octenol, light or paired combinations of these. Among eight mosquito species caught, the attractant effect on trap catches was studied in the four most abundant: Aedes vexans, Ae.rossicus, Ae.cinereus and Culex pipiens .
Traps baited only with light or octenol caught few mosquitoes, whereas many were caught by traps baited with CO2 alone or in combination with either of the other candidate attractants. CO2 baited traps, with or without light, caught the most Aedes . The combination of CO2 and octenol attracted most Cx pipiens , but this apparent synergy was not significant.
Using a caged hamster compared to CO2 as bait in a CDC light-trap with only intermittent fan suction, the hamster attracted less mosquitoes than CO2 emitted at a rate of 225 g/h on days 1 and 2, whereas on days 3 and 4 the smell from the hamster's cage became significantly more attractive than this rate of CO2 for all species of mosquitoes. 相似文献

白纹伊蚊Aedesalbopictus是重要的媒介昆虫 ,骚扰叮咬、传播病菌 ,严重危害人体健康。该文利用市场上流行的不同型号的 2种驱蚊灯和 4种诱蚊灯分别处理白纹伊蚊种群 ,观测其行为反应 ,结果表明白纹伊蚊在活动、取食和存活等方面均产生保护性行为反应。未照射 (CK)蚊子生长正常、活动性强、取食活跃、存活率高。除虫灯光线照射后 ,初期 ( 1d内 )蚊子活泼、活动量较大、存活率较高 ;前期 ( 1~ 3d间 )活动加剧、取食减少而存活率降低 ;一定时期 ( 3d)后活动性逐渐降低、取食越来越少、存活率明显下降。除虫效果检测表明 ,诱蚊灯的诱杀效果比驱蚊灯的驱逐作用对减少蚊虫的数量更明显 ;同时显示 ,诱蚊灯的灭蚊效果均较好 ,但诱蚊作用不十分理想。继而探索出一个对白纹伊蚊具有较好引诱效应的二氧化碳 (CO2 )浓度 4 464× 1 0 -4mol L ,并与紫外线诱蚊灯结合试验表明 ,一定浓度的CO2 能够显著提高诱蚊灯的诱杀效果 ,这可为开辟蚊虫物理防治新途径提供理论依据。 相似文献

目的:研究不同压力二氧化碳气腹对兔血液流变学和微循环的影响。方法:18只雌性健康实验兔按气腹压力随机均分为三组:气腹压0mmHg组(Ⅰ组)、气腹压10mmHg组(Ⅱ组)和气腹压15mmHg组(Ⅲ组)。每组兔均在不同的压力下接受气腹1h。在二氧化碳气腹前5min(T0)、气腹后30min(T1)、气腹后60min(T2)测定血液流变学指标。监测心率(HR)、平均动脉压(MAP)、耳廓微循环的血流量和血流速率并记录在相应时点的上述参数值。结果:气腹后30min、60min,Ⅱ组与Ⅰ组比较,HR、MAP、全血粘度、红细胞刚性指数和聚集指数显著增加(P〈0.05),红细胞变形指数、耳廓微循环的血流量和血流速率显著下降(P〈0.05),Ⅲ组与Ⅰ组比较,各参数变化更为显著(P〈0.01)。血浆粘度和红细胞压积气腹前后无明显变化。结论:二氧化碳气腹后血液流变性减弱;虽然HR、MAP增加,但微循环的血流量和血流速率下降。 相似文献

The effect of prey density on feeding behaviour, killing behaviour, and development of the predatory mosquito,Toxorhynchites towadensis, was investigated in the laboratory. The number of prey consumed per larva increased toward an upper asymptote as prey density
increased. Prey consumption curves during fourth instar were concave at low prey densities but convex at high prey densities.
This phenomenon was not observed during other instars. Killing without consuming any part of prey occurred at prey densities
of 20 per container and over. The number of prey killed but not consumed increased linearly with the number of unconsumed
prey in the container. Prey acquisition behaviour was not affected by prey densities during the prepupal period. Developmental

Five trapping methods were compared for monitoring potential vectors of the West Nile virus in four areas in the Camargue Plain of France: carbon dioxide traps, bird‐baited traps, gravid traps, resting boxes, and human landing catches. A total of 73,721 specimens, representing 14 species, was trapped in 2006. Results showed significant differences in species and abundance between the type of traps. Many more specimens were collected using CO2 traps than any other method, with an average of 212 specimens per night per trap (p<0.05). Culex pipiens was the most abundant species collected (36.8% of total with CO2 traps), followed by Aedes caspius (22.7%), Anopheles hyrcanus (18.3%), Culex modestus (18.3%), and Aedes detritus (3.2%). Bird‐baited traps captured only eight specimens per night per trap on average, mainly Cx. pipiens (89.9%). The species collected and their abundance are influenced by the trap location, at ground or canopy level. Culex pipiens was twice as abundant in the canopy as on the ground, whereas it was the opposite for Ae. caspius, An. hyrcanus, and Ae. detritus. Culex modestus was equally abundant at both levels. Resting boxes and gravid traps were much less efficient, capturing around 0.3 specimens per night per trap. Results are discussed in relation to West Nile virus surveillance. 相似文献

Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae) is the most important vector of human malaria in sub‐Saharan Africa, affecting the lives of millions of people. Existing tools such as insecticide‐treated nets and indoor‐residual sprays are not only effective, but also have limitations as a result of the development of resistance to insecticides and behavioural adaptations in biting time. Therefore, novel mosquito‐control tools are needed. Odour‐releasing traps have a potential for both trapping and surveillance purposes. Based on the outcome of ex vivo gene expression assays and in vivo electrophysiological assays on hundreds of volatile organic compounds, 29 ‘candidate behaviourally‐disruptive organic compounds' (cBDOCs) are selected, belonging to 10 chemical categories, to be assayed in the laboratory using dual‐choice olfactometers for the ability to modify the ‘attractiveness’ (i.e. significantly more insects being caught in the associated trap) of a basic volatile blend consisting of ammonia, lactic acid and tetradecanoic acid but without additional carbon dioxide. Compounds that either reduce or increase trap catches by the basic blend in the olfactometer experiments are tested under African conditions in choice experiments in a semi‐field facility in Kenya. The release rates of cBDOCs are determined gravimetrically to allow the calculation of aerial concentrations at the trap outlet. Aerial concentrations in the sub‐p.p.m. range are reported for the first time to influence mosquito behaviour. The results of the olfactometer and semi‐field assays generally correspond. Under semi‐field conditions, three compounds, 3‐heptanol (0.025 p.p.m.), 2‐methylpropanal (0.05 p.p.m.) and 4,5‐dimethylthiazole (0.73 p.p.m.), significantly increase trap catches relative to the basic blend consisting of ammonia, lactic acid, tetradecanoic acid and carbon dioxide. 2‐Acetylthiophene, 2‐nonanone and 2‐phenylethanol decrease the number of mosquitoes caught at all concentrations tested under semi‐field conditions. 1. Seven types of water-insoluble adhesives were evaluated in sticky traps for collecting adults of Musca domestica L. and Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) or mosquito larvae (Aedes aegypti (L.) and Culex quinquefasciatus Say). 2. Adhesive viscosity affected the tackiness of the glues and this determined their trapping efficiency in air or water. 3. From the 'Hyvis' range of adhesives tested, 'Hyvis 200' was most effective for trapping adult flies. 4. With 24 h exposure to fourth instar Ae.aegypti larvae in tapwater, submerged plates coated with 'Hyvis 10', 'Hyvis 30' or 'Hyvis 200' formulations trapped the majority of larvae. In polluted water the highest rates of trapping were 17.3% of Ae.aegypti and 18.7% of Cx quinquefasciatus with 'Hyvis 200'. Floating traps were consistently less productive than submerged traps under laboratory conditions. 5. In a heavily polluted natural breeding-site of Cx quinquefasciatus, floating traps were more productive than submerged sticky traps with four of seven adhesives tested, the most efficient being 'Hyvis 200' (4.2 mosquitoes per hour) and Hyvis:polyethylene 90:10 (4.5/h). Despite the relative inefficiency of aquatic traps, emergent adults, pupae and second to fourth instars of larvae were collected quickly from the habitat. 相似文献

Squalene produced under anaerobic conditions, by a strain of Torulaspora delbrueckii was extracted from the biomass using supercritical carbon dioxide. Minimum use of solvent, lower time of isolation and a higher selectivity of extraction merit use of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) technique over solvent extraction of squalene, as optimized and reported previously. A maximum squalene yield of 11.12 g g–1 (dry weight) of yeast cells was obtained at a temperature of 60 °C and pressure of 250–255 bar at a constant flow rate of 0.2l min–1 of carbon dioxide. Lyophilization prior to SFE increased the squalene yield to 430.52 g g–1 dry weight of yeast cells, an amount that is far greater than that obtained by (2:1) chloroform–methanol solvent extraction. 相似文献

Aquatain® mosquito formulation (AMF) is a silicone-based monomolecular film, which has recently been approved for use in the European Union. The physical mode of action based on lowering water surface tension prevents mosquito larvae/pupae respiration. Additionally, AMF disables gravid females from landing on the water surface and obstructs the natural oviposition process. Due to multistage effects on mosquitoes, AMF could be a product of choice for defined water body and container breeders such as Culex pipiens L. complex, principal vector of West Nile virus in Europe, and the invasive Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (both Diptera: Culicidae), vector of dengue and chikungunya viruses. The primary objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of AMF, to determine the susceptibility of the immature forms of C. pipiens and A. albopictus, and the persistence/longevity of the product to suppress the eclosion of adults. AMF achieved high mortality rates of juvenile A. albopictus and C. pipiens under laboratory conditions. However, in the field C. pipiens larvae showed higher susceptibility to AMF than A. albopictus. Pupae of the two mosquito species were highly susceptible to the presence of AMF. When C. pipiens juveniles were exposed to AMF in the wild, effects lasted for 21 days in densely covered water bodies and 56 days in water recipients with less vegetation. In both breeding sites, natural habitat and artificial water recipient, the two mosquito species with high impact on public health in Europe could successfully be suppressed by application of AMF (1 ml m−2). 相似文献

运用密闭呼吸代谢箱系统,对3只舍饲绵羊24h(有间断)甲烷(CH4)和二氧化碳(CO2)日排放特征进行了研究.供试3只甘肃细毛羊体况相近(平均体重为(25±5)kg),其基础日粮为燕麦干草和玉米精料,粗精比为 6∶4.结果表明:供试绵羊CH4和CO2的平均排放量分别为11g/d和147 g/d,CH4排放的峰值分别出现在17:00和22:00左右,达0.4217g/h和0.8082 g/h,直到0:00降至最小为0.2993g/h;之后趋于平稳,次日8:00左右再次达到排放高峰,排放量为0.6587 g/h.而CO2在各个测定时间段内差异不显著(p>0.05).因此,舍饲条件下绵羊CH4和CO2排放量动态(g/min)变化不同步.由此,推算出舍饲绵羊(25±5)kg年排放CH4和CO2总量分别约为4.38 kg和53.66 kg. 相似文献

Abstract. The anthropophilic malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto responds to CO2 and human skin emanations. How these odorants affect the behaviour of this mosquito species is studied in an olfactometer. Carbon dioxide is released either as an homogeneous plume or in a turbulent fashion at two different positions from the trap entrance. Anopheles gambiae is deterred from entering a trap with CO2 as the only kairomone, when presented as an homogeneous or turbulent plume. This effect is completely overcome by the addition of skin emanations to the CO2 plume, with a high proportion of mosquitoes found in the trap with skin emanations. Rearrangement of the position of the turbulent CO2 source so that it is 5 cm downwind of the trap entrance overcomes the deterrent effect of CO2 . Carbon dioxide alone, however, does not elicit higher proportions caught compared with clean air. Further studies with the CO2 source positioned 5 cm downwind of the trap entrance show that skin emanations alone result in fewer mosquitoes entering the trap than CO2 + skin emanations. Skin emanations induce more mosquitoes to fly into a trap than a synthetic blend of NH3 + l-lactic acid when both are combined with CO2 . It is concluded that CO2 is a poor kairomone when offered alone and that its presence in the plume at the trap entrance deters mosquitoes from entering. By contrast, when positioned just downwind of the trap entrance, CO2 appears to guide mosquitoes to the vicinity of the trap, where skin emanations then become the principle attractant, causing the mosquito trap entry response. The results of the study have implications for the design of odour-baited traps for this mosquito species. 相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal variation of carbon dioxide exchange from a former true raised bog 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Carbon dioxide exchange was measured, using the eddy covariance technique, during a one and a half year period in 1994 and 1995. The measurements took place over a former true raised bog, characterized by a shallow peat layer and a vegetation dominated by Molinia caerulea. The growing season extended from May until late October, with a maximum LAI in August of 1.7. The carbon balance shows a net release of 97 g C m–2 y–1 (265 kg C ha–1 y–1) from the peat bog ecosystem to the atmosphere. During June, July and August there is net consumption of CO2, while during the rest of the year there is net production of CO2. The average daytime assimilation rates ranged between – 0.2 and – 0.5 mg CO2 m–2 s–1 (– 45 and –11.3 μmol CO2 m–2 s–1), in a period where the LAI ranged between 1 and 1.7. A high vapour pressure deficit (> 15 hPa) corresponding with high temperatures was found to reduce the assimilation rate by on average 50%. Apart from these factors, LAI and the soil temperature codetermine the net exchange of CO2. The total nocturnal respiration during the growing season lies within the same order as the average daytime net assimilation rate. Temperature was found to be the main factor controlling soil respiration, with a Q10 of 4.8. 相似文献
