Genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships were surveyed on 12 species of the Old and seven species of the New World Emberizidae by allozyme electrophoresis of 20 loci. Genetic variability of the Emberizidae is similar to those of the other Passeriformes. The degree of genetic differentiation in the family were large among species of the genus Emberiza of the Old World, and also among genera of the New World Emberizidae. Evolutionary relationships of the Emberizidae based on these genetic distances differed considerably from those of previous publications on some points: (1) Emberiza tristrami, E. elegans, E. bruniceps and E. schoeniclus were genetically much diverged from the other Emberiza as a species of the same genus. (2) Some genetic distances between Emberiza were larger than distances between subfamilies of the New World Emberizidae. (3) Species of the Cardinarinae examined genetically, belonged to the Emberizinae of the New World. Genetic data did not support the current classification that the Old World buntings arose from the New World forms by recent colonization. Discussion was made on the evolution of the Old and New World Emberizidae from the genetic view point.  相似文献

The taxonomy of the New World species of the genus Trichadenotecnum is revised. A total of 44 species, including 29 new species, were treated. These species are classified into 12 monophyletic species groups, eight of them newly proposed here. Two species previously assigned to Trichadenotecnum , T. pichincha New & Thornton and T. sylvaticum Turner, are recognized as not belonging to this genus. Phylogenetic relationships among 16 previously and presently proposed species groups are estimated based on a data matrix of 58 morphological characters. Trees from these analyses support monophyly of Trichadenotecnum and the proposed species groups. The New World species were divided into three major clades. Based on the phylogenetic hypothesis and distributional pattern of the species groups, the biogeographical history of the New World Trichadenotecnum is discussed.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 153 , 651–723.  相似文献

Leaf micromorphological features of both the Old and New World representatives of Eugenia L. have been studied by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The leaves are hypostomatic and, in the majority of species, the stomata are raised above the epidermis. Trichomes are usually present on the abaxial surface of the New World species. The patterns of abaxial surface sculpturing and arrangement of outer stomatal rims are unique in the New World species. The majority of the Old W'orld species showed different anticlinal wall patterns on the adaxial and abaxial epidermises. In the majority of the New World species the anticlinal wall patterns are more or less the same except in E. axillaris. The paracytic type of stomata, with a non-prominent T-piece cutinization at the poles of the guard cells, is a characteristic feature of the New World species. The taxonomic significance of these features in identification and elucidation of species from both areas is discussed.  相似文献

To investigate the phylogenetic relationships between the New World Sciurus and the Old World Sciurus and their biogeographic history, the partial mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences (1,040 base pairs) were analyzed on six Sciurus species: S. aberti, S. carolinensis, S. lis, S. niger, S. stramineus, and S. vulgaris. Phylogenetic trees (maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining, and maximum likelihood methods) commonly showed two groups with high bootstrap values (73-100%): one consisting of the New World Sciurus and the other consisting of the Old World Sciurus. Genetic distances among the New World Sciurus species were remarkably larger than that between two Sciurus species of the Old World, suggesting the earlier radiation of the New World Sciurus than the Old World Sciurus.  相似文献

Spatial patterns in the species richness of birds in the New World   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Spatial patterns in species richness of the complete New World avifauna were analysed, using data previously employed to examine spatial trends in geographic range size. This allowed variation in the patterns to be compared. Species richness was highest around the equator, and decreased towards higher latitudes in both hemispheres. This decrease was asymmetrical; at equivalent latitudes, richness was higher in the southern than in the northern hemisphere, although the reverse was true for a measure of endemism. Controlling for latitude, species richness was higher in the west than in the east. The net primary productivity of, and solar radiation received by an area were both correlated with species richness. However, neither explained more variation in richness than did latitude. No single mechanism developed to explain spatial patterns in species richness satisfactorily explains the patterns observed in the New World avifauna. We discuss reasons why this might be the case. Finally, we point out that species richness at low latitudes is not simply a multiplication of richness at high latitudes; species found at high and low latitudes are unlikely to be ecologically equivalent. Any mechanism that is proposed to explain richness patterns in New World birds will need also to account for this observation.  相似文献

Vitis L. (the grape genus) is the economically most important fruit crop, as the source of grapes and wine. Phylogenetic relationships within the genus have been highly controversial. Herein, we employ sequence data from whole plastomes to attempt to enhance Vitis phylogenetic resolution. The results support the New World Vitis subgenus Vitis as monophyletic. Within the clade, V. californica is sister to the remaining New World Vitis subgenus Vitis. Furthermore, within subgenus Vitis, a Eurasian clade is robustly supported and is sister to the New World clade. The clade of Vitis vinifera ssp. vinifera and V. vinifera ssp. sylvestris is sister to the core Asian clade of Vitis. Several widespread species in North America are found to be non‐monophyletic in the plastome tree, for example, the broadly defined Vitis cinerea and V. aestivalis each needs to be split into several species. The non‐monophyly of some species may also be due to common occurrences of hybridizations in North American Vitis. The classification of North American Vitis by Munson into nine series is discussed based on the phylogenetic results. Analyses of divergence times and lineage diversification support a rapid radiation of Vitis in North America beginning in the Neogene.  相似文献

The following new species in the New World Natada complex are described: Natada minuscula, Natada cecilia, Natada lalogamezi, Natada kokii, Natada monteverdensis, Narosopsis iangauldi, and Euprosterna wemilleri. Natada minuscula is the smallest known species in the complex. Of the new species, only Natada kokii, Natada cecilia and Narosopsis iangauldi are known to occur outside of Costa Rica. Previously the New World Natada complex had 43 species in the neotropics. It is anticipated that the proportion of new species in the complex will exceed other major lineages of Limacodidae found in Costa Rica.  相似文献

Urine collected from New World monkeys (tufted capuchin, squirrel monkey, cotton-top tamarin) and Old World monkeys (rhesus macaque, Japanese macaque), was used as the odor stimuli. Two adult tufted capuchins were trained on a successive odor-discrimination task with two odors, 30 trials each, in one session per day. Responses to one of the two odors (S+) were reinforced by sweet water. The monkeys failed to discriminate between the urine from the two species of macaques but could discriminate among the urine from the three species of New World monkeys. Furthermore, similarity of urine odors was analyzed by multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and a cluster analysis. These analysis suggested that the tufted capuchin can distinguish differences among New World monkeys but not between the macaques. The natural distribution of the tufted capuchin overlaps with that of other New World monkeys, but it does not overlap with those of Old World monkeys. Consequently, it can be concluded that this difference in olfactory recognition in the tufted capuchin reflects their sympatric and allopatric relationships with other species.  相似文献

The geographic area hypothesis advances area as the primary cause of latitudinal gradients in diversity. The greater area of tropical zones, it suggests, stimulates speciation, inhibits extinction, and leads to increased species richness compared to the situation in smaller temperate and boreal zones. Because bats exhibit exceptionally strong latitudinal gradients of richness at multiple spatial scales in the New World, they are an appropriate system with which to test the geographic area hypothesis. We used range maps for 250 species of New World bats to estimate species richness in biogeographic zones at two hierarchical spatial scales: biome types and provinces. We then conducted a series of regression analyses to evaluate the ability of area to account for latitudinal gradients in species richness. However, spillover (zonal bleeding) of tropical species into extra-tropical zones may mask the species-area relationship and alter perceptions of the latitudinal gradient. To address this issue, we conducted additional analyses excluding tropical species, using a series of increasingly inclusive definitions of tropical ranges. Ecogeographic zones of the New World are not larger at tropical versus extra-tropical latitudes. Moreover, spillover of tropical species into ecogeographic zones within extra-tropical regions generally does not diminish the association between richness and area. Nonetheless, the latitudinal gradient of species richness is strong and significant at both ecogeographic scales. Clearly, area does not drive the latitudinal gradient of bat species richness in the New World. In fact, area represents a source of noise rather than a dominant signal at the focal scale of biome types and provinces in the Western Hemisphere.  相似文献

The in vitro leishmanicidal activity of miltefosine? (Zentaris GmbH) was assessed against four medically relevant Leishmania species of Brazil: Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. The activity of miltefosine against these New World species was compared to its activity against the Old World strain, Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani, which is known to be sensitive to the effects of miltefosine. The IC50 and IC90 results suggested the New World species harboured similar in vitro susceptibilities to miltefosine; however, miltefosine was approximately 20 times more active against the Old World L. (L.) donovani than against the New World L. (L.) chagasi species. The selectivity index varied from 17.2-28.9 for the New World Leishmania species and up to 420.0 for L. (L.) donovani. The differences in susceptibility to miltefosine suggest that future clinical trials with this drug should include a laboratory pre-evaluation and a dose-defining step.  相似文献

A new and morphologically very distinct species of Pediobius from Costa Rica is described. The new species (P. nishidai) is unique among New World species of Pediobius in having the propodeum elongated and extended backwards (i.e. with an elongated nucha). The entire type series (15 females, two males) was reared from a single prepupa of Epilachna mexicana and it has been concluded that the new Pediobius species is a gregarious endoparasitoid that pupates inside its host. The possible use of this new species as a biological control agent against "the Mexican bean beetle" (E. varivestis) should be tested.  相似文献

Aim  Relationships between range size and species richness are contentious, yet they are key to testing the various hypotheses that attempt to explain latitudinal diversity gradients. Our goal is to utilize the largest data set yet compiled for New World woody plant biogeography to describe and assess these relationships between species richness and range size.
Location  North and South America.
Methods  We estimated the latitudinal extent of 12,980 species of woody plants (trees, shrubs, lianas). From these estimates we quantified latitudinal patterns of species richness and range size. We compared our observations with expectations derived from two null models.
Results   Peak richness and the smallest- and largest-ranged species are generally found close to the equator. In contrast to prominent diversity hypotheses: (1) mean latitudinal extent of tropical species is greater than expected; (2) latitudinal extent appears to be decoupled from species richness across New World latitudes, with abrupt transitions across subtropical latitudes; and (3) mean latitudinal extents show equatorial and north temperate peaks and subtropical minima. Our results suggest that patterns of range size and richness appear to be influenced by three broadly overlapping biotic domains (biotic provinces) for New World woody plants.
Main conclusions  Hypotheses that assume a direct relationship between range size and species richness may explain richness patterns within these domains, but cannot explain gradients in richness across the New World.  相似文献

Bemisia tabaci is one of the most important global agricultural insect pests, being a vector of emerging plant viruses such as begomoviruses and criniviruses that cause serious problems in many countries. Although knowledge of the genetic diversity of B. tabaci populations is important for controlling this pest and understanding viral epidemics, limited information is available on this pest in Brazil. A survey was conducted in different locations of São Paulo and Mato Grosso states, and the phylogenetic relationships of B. tabaci individuals from 43 populations sampled from different hosts were analysed based on partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 gene (mtCOI) sequences. According to the recently proposed classification of the B. tabaci complex, which employs the 3.5% mtCOI sequence divergence threshold for species demarcation, most of the specimens collected were found to belong to the Middle East‐Asia Minor 1 species, which includes the invasive populations of the commonly known B biotype, within the Africa/Middle East/Asia Minor high‐level group. Three specimens collected from Solanun gilo and Ipomoea sp. were grouped together and could be classified in the New World species that includes the commonly known A biotype. However, six specimens collected from Euphorbia heterophylla, Xanthium cavanillesii and Glycine maxima could not be classified into any of the 28 previously proposed species, although according to the 11% mtCOI sequence divergence threshold, they belong to the New World high‐level group. These specimens were classified into a new recently proposed species named New World 2 that includes populations from Argentina. Middle East‐Asia Minor 1, New World and New World 2 were differentiated by RFLP analysis of the mtCOI gene using TaqI enzyme. Taq I analysis in silico also differentiates these from Mediterranean species, thus making this method a convenient tool to determine population dynamics, especially critical for monitoring the presence of this exotic pest in Brazil.  相似文献

The 480 species of leafy spurges, Euphorbia subgenus Esula, represent the main temperate radiation in the large genus Euphorbia. This group is distributed primarily in temperate Eurasia, but with smaller, disjunct centres of diversity in the mountains of the Old World tropics, in temperate southern Africa and in the New World. The majority of New World diversity (32 species) occurs in a single section, section Tithymalus. We analysed sequences of the nrITS and plastid ndhF, trnH‐psbA, trnS‐trnG and trnD‐trnT regions to reconstruct the phylogeny of section Tithymalus and to examine the origins and diversification of the species native to the New World. Our results indicate that the New World species of section Tithymalus form a clade that is sister to the widespread, weedy E. peplus. The New World species fall into two primary groups: a ‘northern annual clade’ from eastern North America and a diverse clade of both annual and perennial species that is divided into three subgroups. Within the second group, there is a small ‘southern annual clade’ from Texas and northern Mexico, a perennial ‘Brachycera clade’ from the western United States and northern Mexico, and a perennial ‘Esuliformis clade’ from montane areas of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Ancestral state reconstructions indicate that the annual habit probably evolved in the ancestor of E. peplus and the New World clade, with a subsequent reversal to the perennial habit. Aim To quantify the latitudinal gradient in species richness in the New World Triatominae and to explore the species‐energy and area hypotheses as possible causes. Location The gradient was studied for North and South America, between 43° N and 32° S. Methods A database was constructed containing the geographical distribution of the 118 New World Triatominae species based on data extracted from several published sources. Species richness was recorded as the number of species present within 5° latitudinal bands. We used univariate and multivariate models to analyse the relationship between area within each latitudinal belt, land surface temperature, and potential evapotranspiration as explanatory variables, and species richness. All variables were georeferenced and data were extracted using a GIS. Results Species richness of Triatominae increases significantly from the poles towards the Equator, peaking over the 5°?10 ° S latitudinal band. It increases according to a linear model, both north and south of the Equator, although a quadratic model fits better to southern hemisphere data. Richness correlates with habitable geographical area, when it is analysed through a nonlinear multiple regression factoring out latitude, only in the southern hemisphere. Regarding the species‐energy hypothesis, a multiple regression analysis controlling the effect of latitude shows a significant relationship between temperature and species richness. This effect is more pronounced in the southern hemisphere. Species richness shows a strong longitudinal trend south of the Equator (increasing to the east), but not north of the Equator. This differential pattern is reflected in significant interactions between longitude and both latitude and temperature in models of the species richness of the New World Triatominae. Main conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first time that a latitudinal gradient in species richness has been shown and analysed for obligate haematophagous organisms, and it shows that the species–energy hypothesis can account for this phenomenon. Floral scent of bat-pollinated species: West Africa vs. the New World   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Floral scent of seven West African bat-pollinated tree species, belonging to six families, was collected in situ from flowering individuals using headspace adsorption. The seven species shared neither any specific compounds nor any other discernible pattern in their floral scent composition. Most of the identified compounds are common in the floral scent of species pollinated by a variety of animals. Adansonia digitata (Bombacaceae) was the only African species found to have a substantial proportion of sulphur compounds in its floral scent. This feature contrasts with the sampled New World bat-pollinated plants, which frequently contain these compounds. The floral scent of Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae), native to both South America and Africa, contained no sulphur substances, contradicting a previous study in the New World that identified the major floral compounds as dimethyl disulphide and dimethyl trisulphide. We suggest that the differences in the floral scent of C. pentandra , including the absence of sulphur compounds in the African variety, result from the different selective regimes exerted by the Pteropotidae bats, in Africa, and Phyllostomidae bats, in the New World, that visit their flowers.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 161–168.  相似文献

Non-random statistical patterns have long been of interest to community ecologists. Recent studies of communities of mutualists have revealed non-random patterns in terms of connectance, degree of specialization, and nestedness. Currently unstudied, however, are the detailed statistical relationships between tropical vertebrate mutualists and their food plants in different parts of the world. Here, I review 87 studies that quantify the relationship between species richness of nectar- or fruit-eating birds and bats and species richness of their food plants in New and Old World, mostly tropical, communities. This analysis revealed that in the New World, number of plant-visiting birds and bats per community was significantly correlated with number of food plants and that the slopes of regression equations were the same for nectarivores and frugivores. The New World quantitative assembly rule states that it takes about three species of flowers or fruits to support one species of plant-visiting bird or bat. This relationship does not appear to exist in Old World communities, in which species richness of nectar- or fruit-eating birds or bats was independent of species richness of their food plants. These geographic differences likely reflect a greater degree of feeding specialization in plant-visiting vertebrates in the New World than in the Old World. I hypothesize that hemispheric differences in the spatio-temporal predictability (STP) of food resources ultimately determine levels of dietary specialization and structure in communities of New and Old World plant-visiting vertebrates.  相似文献

The mammalian fauna of Mexico is one of the world's richest. Mexico can be considered a true country of megadiversity because it has more species of non-volant mammals than any other country in the New World, even after taking account of the effect of size. A comparison with other political units of the New World showed that the country as a whole harbours more non-volant mammals than expected for its size, whereas individual Mexican states have about the number of species that would be expected for their area. Beta, or differentiation diversity and environmental heterogeneity, rather than alpha or within-habitat diversity, are the key factors that determine the unusually high species richness of the country.  相似文献

Sequences of eruption of teeth and union of epiphyses determined for three species of African Cercopithecinae. These sequences are highly scalable and are highly comparable between among the species. Some sex differences in sequence were found within each species. The sequences of epiphyseal union in these species of Old World monkeys are very similar to published sequences in New World monkeys and other groups of higher primates. It appears that there is a single pattern common to the Anthropoidea as a whole.  相似文献
