Non-native aquatic macrophytes have invaded different types of ecosystems all over the world. The exotic submersed macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata recently invaded the Paraná basin, Brazil, being recorded by the first time in the natural habitats of this river in 2005. We investigated the effects of this species on ostracod assemblages and compared the abundance, richness, and Shannon–Wiener diversity of ostracod assemblages that colonize the invading species with those that colonize Egeria najas, a native submersed species with similar architecture and physical complexity. Fragments of these two species were left for 28 days in tanks to root and grow and then they were transferred to a floodplain lake where they remained in pairs (one plant of each species; N = 7) during 30 days for colonization by ostracods. A detrented correspondence analysis was used to summarize ostracod assemblage composition. Although there were no significant differences in ostracod abundance, richness and Shannon diversity when analyzed separately, cumulative curves, which permit to eliminate effects of abundance on richness, indicated a significantly higher number of ostracod species on H. verticillata. Assemblage composition was significantly different between both plant species, as shown by the first DCA axis. Our results show that H. verticillata might provide favorable habitats for native ostracod assemblages.  相似文献

The study of materials collected by Russian expeditions and literature data showed that the pelagic ostracod fauna of the Somov Sea, which lies south of the Antarctic Divergence (AD), is an impoverished complex of the fauna of the Australian-New Zealand Antarctic sector. While to the north of the AD the ostracod fauna includes species introduced from waters of the subantarctic and tropical-subtropical structures, ostracods of the Somov Sea are mainly typical Antarctic species. To the north and south of the AD, ostracod abundance and species richness are highest in the depth range of 200–500 m (especially at 300–400 m). Austrinoecia isocheira is the most common species in the Somov Sea and Alacia hettacra in the adjacent northern region. The more southerly Ross Sea has harsher environmental conditions than the Somov Sea and its ostracod fauna is a more impoverished complex of mainly Antarctic species. Alacia belgicae and A. isocheira are the dominant species in the Ross Sea, with their highest abundances at 200–300 m depths. The proportion of A. hettacra in the Ross Sea taxocene decreases southwards. The taxonomical composition and biogeographical structure of ostracod faunas change in the AD region at the northern boundaries of both seas.  相似文献

Summary 1. The relationship between altitudinal gradients on small spatial scales and latitudinal gradients on broader scales has been repeatedly recognised in the biogeography of animals and plants. However, little is known about this topic in the ecology and biogeography of ostracod communities in Mediterranean flowing waters or the factors underlying these spatial patterns. 2. We analysed the ostracod assemblages of near‐natural headwater streams in the Betic and Pre‐Betic Mountains in the southern Iberian Peninsula to decipher the most important environmental gradients structuring ostracod communities on a local scale. In addition, the European altitudinal and latitudinal distributions of the most commonly found species were analysed with GIS and regression models to compare geographical effects from local to continental scales. 3. Forty sampling sites, distributed among six catchments and ranging in altitude between 150 and 1940 m a.s.l., were sampled seasonally. Limnological and geographical information was also recorded for each sample. Seventeen ostracod species were found, two of which were new findings for the Iberian Peninsula: Potamocypris fulva and Cypria reptans. The most common species were Potamocypris zschokkei, Candona neglecta, Herpetocypris brevicaudata, Cyclocypris ovum, Potamocypris villosa and Pseudocandona albicans. The distribution of these species in 918 European locations was analysed to test the hypothesised change in altitudinal distribution with varying latitude. 4. The best subset of logistic and linear regression models, selected by means of the information‐theoretic approach, found that oxygen content and the variables related with substratum and discharge were the most important variables with a negative influence on ostracod presence, abundance and species richness on a local scale. These findings suggest that the negative effect on benthic invertebrates of physical disturbances relates to high flow velocity and turbulences. 5. Multivariate ordination methods show how altitude and water chemistry are the most important variables to explain the distribution of ostracod assemblages on the small spatial scale. On a larger scale, differences in latitudinal distribution throughout Europe were significant for the six most common species found in Granada. In addition, four of these showed significant negative linear relationships between latitude and altitude in Europe, supporting the important effect of climate on local and continental scale distributions. While ostracod biogeographies are still poorly known, our results indicate the influence of Quaternary climate variability on ostracod dynamic colonisation and extinction in Europe in accordance with species‐specific temperature and water chemistry preferences.  相似文献

The study of the pelagic ostracod fauna of the Arctic Ocean based on materials collected by numerous Russian expeditions (1929–1993) and data from the literature showed the extreme poorness of the Arctic pelagic ostracod fauna, its mainly North Atlantic genesis and complete isolation from the Pacific fauna. Maximum ostracod abundance was observed in the epipelagic zone, and the greatest species diversity occurred in the relatively warm deep Atlantic layer throughout the year. To the north, east, and west of Franz Josef Land and Spitsbergen, the number of species and abundance indices of pelagic ostracods were decreased. In superficial water layers of the Central Arctic, maximum ostracod density and biomass were recorded in June and September. The best bioindicator of warm Atlantic water in the Arctic basin is Obtusoecia obtusata; and of cold polar water in the North Atlantic, Boroecia maxima.  相似文献

The current study presents the ostracod communities recovered from 26 shallow waterbodies in southern Kenya, combined with an ecological assessment of habitat characteristics. A total of 37 waterbodies were sampled in 2001 and 2003, ranging from small ephemeral pools to large permanent lakes along broad gradients in altitude (700–2 800 m) and salinity (37–67 200 µS cm?1). Between 0 and 12 species were recorded per site. Lack of ostracods was associated with either hypersaline waters, or the presence of fish in fresh waters. Three of the 32 recovered ostracod taxa, Physocypria sp., Sarscypridopsis cf. elizabethae and Oncocypris mulleri, combined a wide distribution with frequent local dominance. Canonical correspondence analysis on species–environment relationships indicated that littoral vegetation, altitude, surface water temperature and pH best explain the variation in ostracod communities. Presence of fish and water depth also influence species occurrence, with the larger species being more common in shallow waterbodies lacking fish. Based on Chao’s estimator of total regional species richness, this survey recovered about two-thirds (60–68%) of the regional ostracod species pool. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of the valve morphology of 14 ostracod taxa are provided, in order to facilitate their application in biodiversity and water-quality assessments and in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction.  相似文献

About 4000 ostracod valves have been analysed from a sediment core of a cultivated bog NW of Hamburg. The deepest deposits are sands free of subfossils, the uppermost layers consist of peat. In the sediment in between, there are three layers containing undestroyed valves. The ostracod assemblies of the older claygyttja (Late-glacial) and the two younger, fine detritus deposits (Post-glacial) are strikingly different. Cytherissa lacustris, Candona neglecta, Ilyocypris bradyi, Herpetocyrpis reptans, and two Limnocythere species were found in the Late-glacial layers. Changes in abundance of these species indicate alterations in climate, lake ground, water inflow and waterlevels. Postglacial layers are rich in Metacypris cordata valves associated with numerous Candona species, L. inopinata, Darwinula stevensi, and Cyclocypris laevis. These species are characteristic of a small lake with a large littoral zone. A similar development in ostracod assemblages is found in middle Europe by Absolon (1973), although the main Candona species is not C. neglecta but C. candida. Ostracod analysis cannot demonstrate an influence of anthropogenic impacts on ostracod successions.  相似文献

In the first molecular study of ostracod (Crustacea) vision, we present partial cDNA sequences of ostracod visual pigment genes (opsins). We found strong support for differential expression of opsins in ostracod median and compound eyes and suggest that photoreceptor specific expression may be a general phenomenon in organisms with multiple receptors. We infer that eye-specific expression predates the divergence of the two species examined, Skogsbergia lerneri and Vargula hilgendorfii, because eye-specific opsin orthologs are present in both species. We found multiple opsin loci in ostracods, estimating that at least eight are present in Skogsbergia lerneri. All opsins from both ostracod species examined are more closely related to each other than to any other known opsin sequences. Because we find no evidence for gene conversion or alternative splicing, we suggest the occurrence of many recent gene duplications. Why ostracods may have retained multiple recent opsin gene duplicates is unknown, but we discuss several possible hypotheses.[Reviewing Editor: Martin Kreitman]  相似文献

Ostracods are important members of the benthos and littoral communities of lake ecosystems. Ostracods respond to hydrochemistry (water chemistry) which is influenced by climatic factors such as water balance, temperature, and chemicals in rainfall runoff from the land. Thus, at local scales, environmental preferences of ostracods and characteristics of lakes are used to infer changes in climate, hydrology, and erosion of lake catchments. This study addresses potential drivers of ostracod community structure and biodiversity at multiple spatial scales using NMS, CART?, and multiple regression models. We identified 23 ostracod species from 12 lake sites. Lake area, maximum depth, spring conductivity, chlorophyll a, pH, dissolved oxygen, sedimentary carbonate, and organic matter all influence ostracod community structure based on our NMS. Based on regression analysis, lake depth, chlorophyll a, and total dissolved solids best explained ostracod richness and abundance. Land uses are also important community structuring elements that varied with scale; locally and regionally agriculture, wetlands, and grasslands were important. Nationally, using regression tree analysis of lakes sites in the North American Non-marine ostracod database (NANODe), row-crop agriculture was the most important predictor of biodiversity. Low agriculture corresponded to low species richness but greater landscape heterogeneity produced sites of high ostracod richness.  相似文献

Evidence of damage and repair in a Quaternary fossil brackish-marine ostracod is described. The specimen is a right valve of Bicornucythere bisanensis from the Laizhou Bay, eastern China, showing distortion in the posterior region, interpreted as a possible bite mark resulting from attempted predation on the ostracod. Comparison with undamaged specimens from the same assemblage suggests that the damage occurred just after the ostracod had moulted and was still in a ‘soft-shell’ state, before the new bivalved carapace was calcified, and that subsequent calcification preserved the resulting distortion of the reticulate surface ornament. This implies that the ostracod survived the damage and was able to heal and repair its shell. As far as we are aware, this is the first such example to be documented in Ostracoda although similar occurrences have been recorded in other fossil arthropods.  相似文献

An ecological calibration dataset for freshwater ostracods from 33 localities throughout West-Pomerania (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) was evaluated using multivariate statistical methods. A total of 47 freshwater ostracod species were identified. Nine species were rediscovered after 100 years since the last published record and Candonopsis scourfieldi and Pseudocandona sucki was recorded for the first time in the study area. Special emphasis is put on the phenology of each species to gain information on the water characteristics at the time of their last moult. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that the ecological variables such as water temperature, Ca, Mg, and lake area were statistically most significant (p < 0.005; n = 72) in explaining variation in the distribution of ostracod assemblages. In addition, a transfer function was developed for paleolimnological approaches, based on a weighted-averaging (WA) model to calculate water temperature from the relative abundances of 22 selected ostracod species. This model was successfully applied to infer lake water temperature from subfossil ostracod assemblages collected from lacustrine deposits in northeast Germany (Lake Krakower See). To trace environmental changes in water hydrology and salinity in the Late Glacial to Holocene of the Gulf of Gdańsk, a south‐eastern bay of the Baltic Sea within the maritime zone of Poland, the distribution of ostracod valves was studied in 20 sediment cores collected from both the shallow‐ and deep‐water zones (depth 10.9–67.5 m). The studied sediment sequences yielded ca. 3000 valves of 21 ostracod species, of which only five are known to live today in the Gulf, which has a present maximum depth of 118 m and water salinity up to 7–8‰. The majority of the studied sediment layers that contained ostracod valves corresponded to the period of the Late Glacial to Mid‐Holocene and was dominated by non‐marine species, of which the most common were Candona neglecta (present in 17 cores), Cytherissa lacustris (15 cores) and Candona candida (14 cores). By clustering classification five major ostracod assemblage types were recognised in the studied cores. Initial assemblage types dominated mostly by inhabitants of the profundal/sub‐littoral zones of modern oligo‐mesotrophic lakes (C. lacustris and C. neglecta) in some sediment sequences were replaced in stratigraphical order by the assemblages dominated by brackish‐water species (Cyprideis torosa or Cytheromorpha fuscata). The structure and species composition of the distinguished ostracod assemblage types as well as their successional transitions indicate that the studied sediments were deposited initially in the Late Glacial in freshwater lacustrine conditions, and subsequently, during the Holocene marine transgression, covered by marine sands. As one of the pioneering projects of the Chinese Environmental Scientific Drilling (CESD) Program, a 206.5 m long sediment core (CE) was retrieved from Co Ngoin (Co = lake) Basin in the central Tibetan Plateau. Limnic records of the abundance of ostracod shells and their oxygen and carbon isotope measurements, together with the geochemical and the sedimentological investigations, were carried out on the interval between 143 and 52 m core depths, corresponding to ca. 2.01–0.84 Myr. Distinct oscillations of the abundance and the chemical compositions of ostracod shells have yielded the original information about variations in lakewater chemistry in association with the change in the Indian monsoon over the period of 2.01 to 0.84 Myr. The climate conditions during the Early Pleistocene were characterized by frequent oscillations and the ostracod records had expressed its synchronous response to these oscillations. A major climate change occurred in the Co Ngoin area at about 0.93 Myr. A pronounced fluctuation in ostracod δ18O and δ13C during the Mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) is possibly associated with an increase in continental ice sheets. The compositional and the sedimentological characters of the immediately overlying sediments imply a shallow aquatic environment and also a harsh (salinity?) condition beyond the tolerance limits for ostracod survival, resulting in the disappearance of the Qinghaicypris crassa Huang 1979 around 0.84 Myr.  相似文献

Grey, M., Finkel, Z.V., Pufahl, P.K. & Reid, L.M. 2012: Evolutionary mode of the ostracod, Velatomorpha altilis, at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 615–623. The estuarine ostracod Velatomorpha altilis was analysed for size and shape changes over a 2–3 million‐year interval within a portion of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs World Heritage Site. This represents one of a very few number of studies focused on evolutionary trends within marginal environments and contributes to a growing body of research that attempts to link evolutionary patterns with processes. We measured nearly 400 ostracod specimens and used a quantitative model‐based test to assess mode of evolution. Samples of ostracods were also analysed for their stable oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions in an attempt to supplement paleoenvironmental interpretations. Stasis was the strongly supported model for mode of evolution in both size and shape metrics, lending support to previous hypotheses that organisms from fluctuating, and therefore stressed, environments, should exhibit stasis because they are genetically well adapted to environmental change over geological time‐scales. Stable isotopic compositions indicate samples were diagenetically altered and thus do not preserve a primary signature of paleoenvironmental conditions. Future work should look to other marginal organisms to test whether stasis is indeed a trend in these types of environments. □Carboniferous, estuarine ostracod, environment, evolutionary mode.  相似文献

Amphicypris argentinensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Laguna Caliba, an ephemeral fresh water lake from the southern coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Specimens were raised from dried sediment recovered from a bank of ostracod shells found at the edges of the lake. Deposition of progressively smaller ostracod valves stacked one into another (cup-in-cup structure) is documented. We report the results of quantitative and qualitative investigations of the ostracod fauna of the profundal benthos of Loch Ness, an oligotrophic lake in Scotland, UK. Six ostracod species were recorded from profundal samples: Candona angulata, C. candida, Cryptocandona reducta, Cypria ophthalmica, Cyclocypris ovum and Potamocypris smaragdina. In addition, Psychrodromus robertsoni was found in fish gut contents. The mean density of profundal ostracods was 262 individuals m2, with an average Brillouin's Diversity of 0.7. A weak inverse relationship between fish body weight and the number of ostracods eaten is reported for Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus.  相似文献

The American red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) was introduced in 1973 into the Iberian Peninsula for commercial purposes. As a result of both the expansion from the Iberian Peninsula and, probably, further introductions in other European countries, now it is widely distributed throughout much of Europe. The ecological impacts of this invading crayfish have received increasing attention, but nothing is known about its symbiotic entocytherid ostracods outside the American continent. The present survey has examined more than 200 crayfishes from 12 localities distributed over a wide area of Eastern Spain. Entocytherid ostracods were extracted from individual crayfishes and they were identified, counted, assigned to developmental instars and sexed. In all the study locations but one, we found at least one crayfish individual infected by entocytherid ostracods and the species determined was the same in all cases: Ankylocythere sinuosa (Rioja, 1942). The number of ostracods on individual P. clarkii varied notably in relation to crayfish size and also differed significantly among sampling sites. The crayfish size effects on ostracod densities might be related to the amount of resources and to the crayfish age and moulting frequency affecting ostracod distribution and population structure. In addition, the spatial variation in ostracod densities could also be related to site-specific habitat traits and the variability of crayfish population dynamics. Our study represents the first citation of an alien entocytherid species in Europe and demonstrates its wide distribution in the Iberian Peninsula. Further research is needed to know the potential effects of this ostracod species on the ecology of P. clarkii and of native species, with implications on the management of this aquatic invader.  相似文献

This study investigates two different effects of an ostracod on a rotifer. The rotifer Keratella tropica and the ostracod Cypris pubera were cultured on the alga Cryptomonas erosa. Adult ostracods (2.2 mm body length) significantly reduced the population growth rate (r day–1) of K. tropica from 0.42 to 0.13. Individuals of this size ingested live rotifers and produced fecal pellets with rotifer loricas. Smaller ostracods (both 0.59 and 1.61 mm body lengths) did not affect K. tropica 's population growth rate. Surprisingly, C. pubera significantly inhibited spine development in K. tropica. Rotifers cultured with juvenile, non‐predatory ostracods had similar lorica lengths but right and left posterior spines that were 10 and 30% shorter, respectively. The spine reduction induced by the ostracod kairomone is in striking contrast to the spine elongation induced in this rotifer by kairomones from copepods, cladocerans and Asplanchna. In shallow ecosystems, large ostracods that swim in the plankton may be important predators of rotifers. In lake Titicaca, the distribution of the modern ostracod fauna appears to be controlled by a combination of two factors: a) the equilibrium between carbonates and organic matter, b) the ionic composition of the lake water and its tributaries. Therefore, the Limnocythere-Pampacythere group generally predominates on an alkaline-carbonate lake floor. In parts of the lake receiving an NaCl input from tributaries, Cyprideis and Cyprinotus occur. These are generally absent elsewhere. The Candonopsis group is found in the deepest part of the lake.Analysis of ostracod assemblages recovered from a number of cores permitted the reconstruction of the hydrological evolution of lake Huinaymarca for the last 10000 years. This included: low water levels, variations of oxygenation related to the position of the thermocline, and interconnections between different basins of the lake.  相似文献

Ecological niche modelling (ENM) has been used to quantify the potential occurrence of species, by identifying the main environmental factors that determine the presence of species across geographical space. We provide a large-scale survey of the distribution of ostracod species in South America, by using the domains of 25 river basins. From 221 known ostracod species, we estimate the potential distribution of 61 species, using ENM. Ten clusters of potential distribution patterns were found. Clusters 8 and 9 grouped most of the species, which presented high similarity of niche between them. Heterocypris paningi Brehm, 1934 (group 1) obtained higher niche variability. The minimum temperatures of the coldest month and the mean elevation of the river basin were most important to predict the potential distribution of ostracods of most groups. South America has a complex pattern of elevation, which affects species distributions indirectly through changes in local factors. For instance, the Andes mountains might impose a barrier for ostracod distribution in the southern part of South America because of the low temperatures and precipitation. The ENM indicated that some regions and/or basins of South America might be susceptible to the entry of several ostracod species, presently absent, including non-native species.
