Terfelt, F, Bagnoli, G. & Stouge, S. 2011: Re‐evaluation of the conodont Iapetognathus and implications for the base of the Ordovician System GSSP. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 227–237. In 2000, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) ratified the decision from the International Working Group on the Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary (COBWG) to place the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Ordovician System in the Green Point section, Newfoundland, Canada, at a point coinciding with the first appearance of the conodont Iapetognathus fluctivagus. However, a restudy of the conodont successions from Green Point shows that this species is not present at the boundary interval, and as a consequence the section does not fulfil the biostratigraphical requirements of a GSSP. The GSSP horizon as now defined is based on a level part‐way through the range of I. preaengensis– a species with lower first appearance datum (FAD). The true FAD of I. fluctivagus is above the FAD of planktonic graptolites and well above the FAD of I. preaengensis. As a consequence of these problems, a restudy of the GSSP section and the other sections in the Cow Head Group is necessary. A redefinition of the GSSP horizon is suggested. The following four alternative horizons have potential as new horizons for the GSSP level: the FAD of Cordylodus intermedius; the FAD of Cordylodus andresi; the FAD of Eoconodontus notchpeakensis; and the FAD of the agnostoid Lotagnostus americanus. □Boundary, Cambrian, conodont, Global boundary Stratotype Section Point, Iapetognathus, Ordovician.  相似文献

The history, philosophy, and application of the concept of the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) are reviewed. Geochronologic units defined by GSSPs serve as practical classificatory pigeonholes for the subdivision of geologic time. Accordingly, the main factor involved in the definition of GSSPs must be global correlatability. Early opposition to the GSSP concept centered around the desire for a traditional biochronologic time scale defined conceptually in terms of palaeobiological events, but such time scales are inherently unstable and thus unsuitable for the use of all geoscientists. The GSSP concept is also generally incompatible with the desire for 'natural' geochronologic boundaries. GSSPs have been defined mainly on the basis of biostratigraphic guiding criteria, but magnetic polarity reversals and chemostratigraphic and cyclostratigraphic horizons are now playing an important role. Most primary guiding criteria used to place a 'golden spike' will eventually become problematical in some way, so GSSPs should be defined so as to be correlatable by as many different lines of age-significant information as possible. The 'Global Standard Stratigraphic Age' (better renamed 'Standard Global Numerical Age') is a numerical analogue of the golden spike. Numerical definitions are currently appropriate for the formal subdivision of the Precambrian, and perhaps also for the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary. Recent suggestions to abandon chronostratigraphic terms (system, series, stage) in favor of geochronologic terms (period, epoch, age) are logically defensible, but could perpetuate the continuing confusion between various stratigraphic categories.  相似文献

The Global Standard Stratotype-section and Point (GSSP) of the Furongian Series (uppermost series of the Cambrian System) and the Paibian Stage (lowermost stage of the Furongian Series), has been recently defined and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The boundary stratotype is 369 metres above the base of the Huaqiao Formation in the Paibi section, northwestern Hunan Province, China. This point coincides with the first appearance of the cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Glyptagnostus reticulatus, and occurs near the base of a large positive carbon isotopic excursion (SPICE excursion).  相似文献

The current Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP ) for the Aeronian Stage (Llandovery Series, Silurian System), on Trefawr track in the Llandovery area of Wales, is an inadequate marker for precise, global, correlation. The International Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy has, therefore, undertaken the selection of a new GSSP for this level. The lowest occurrence of the graptolite Demirastrites triangulatus , 1.38 m above the base of the black‐shale succession of the ?elkovice Formation at the Hlásná T?ebaň section in Central Bohemia, is proposed to mark the base of the Aeronian Stage. The section, which fulfils all formal requirements for stratotype of a chronostratigraphical unit, should be considered as a candidate for the new GSSP . An abundant, well‐preserved, diverse graptolite fauna occurs through the section along with common chitinozoans, which indicate that the Spinachitina maennili Biozone spans the boundary interval. The section comprises the lower–middle Aeronian (D. triangulatus–Lituigraptus convolutus graptolite biozones) along with underlying Rhuddanian (Akidograptus ascensus–Coronograptus cyphus biozones) and Hirnantian strata. Several graptolite genera of primary importance in global correlation (Demirastrites , Petalolithus , Rastrites and Campograptus ) first appear in the lower part of the triangulatus Biozone. The structurally simple section is somewhat condensed, but there is a uniform succession of black shale without any evidence of disconformity in the broad boundary interval. The Corg isotope record exhibits a minor positive excursion just above the base of the triangulatus Biozone, whereas TOC and N isotope and elemental geochemical records provide evidence for uninterrupted sedimentation under stable, anoxic conditions.  相似文献

The Ediacaran Period: a new addition to the geologic time scale   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The International Union of Geological Sciences has approved a new addition to the geologic time scale: the Ediacaran Period. The Ediacaran is the first Proterozoic period to be recognized on the basis of chronostratigraphic criteria and the first internationally ratified, chronostratigraphically defined period of any age to be introduced in more than a century. In accordance with procedures established by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, the base of the Ediacaran Period is defined by a Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) placed at the base of the Nuccaleena Formation cap carbonate directly above glacial diamictites and associated facies at Enorama Creek in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Its top is defined by the initial GSSP of the Cambrian Period. The new Ediacaran Period encompasses a distinctive interval of Earth history that is bounded both above and below by equally distinctive intervals. Both chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic data indicate that the subdivision of the period into two or more series is feasible, and this should be a primary objective of continuing work by the Ediacaran Subcommission of the ICS.  相似文献

The reaction between allicin (diallylthiosulfinate), the active component of garlic and reduced glutathione was investigated. The product of this reaction, mixed disulfide S-allylmercaptoglutathione (GSSA) was separated by high performance liquid chromatography and identified by 1H and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. The reaction is fast (with an apparent bimolecular reaction rate constant of 3.0 M(-1) s(-1)). It is pH-dependent, which reveals a direct correlation to the actual concentration of mercaptide ion (GS(-)). Both GSSA and S-allylmercaptocysteine (prepared from allicin and cysteine) reacted with SH-containing enzymes, papain and alcohol dehydrogenase from Thermoanaerobium brockii yielding the corresponding S-allylmercapto proteins, and caused inactivation of the enzymes. The activity was restored with dithiothreitol or 2-mercaptoethanol. In addition, GSSA also exhibited high antioxidant properties. It showed significant inhibition of the reaction between OH radicals and the spin trap 5,5'-dimethyl-1-pyroline N-oxide in the Fenton system as well as in the UV photolysis of H2O2. In ex vivo experiments done with fetal brain slices under iron-induced oxidative stress, GSSA significantly lowered the production levels of lipid peroxides. The similar activity of GSSA and allicin as SH-modifiers and antioxidants suggests that the thioallyl moiety has a key role in the biological activity of allicin and its derivatives.  相似文献

Commercial celluloses (BH20, Epicote, FC+) and their cellulose-containing powdered mixed resins (PMR) were evaluated using enzymatic and physical methods. Samples were hydrolyzed with purified Trichoderma viride cellulase extract and measured for released reducing sugar using the dinitrosalicylic acid method. Physical characterization was performed with gross specific surface areas (GSSA) and relative crystalline indices (RCI). In addition, FC+ was exposed to physical and chemical processing commonly encountered in spent PMR processing to determine potential effects on reducing sugar release in high intensity containers. Reducing sugar released from the celluloses by T. viride cellulase ranged from 135.37 to 244.48 mg day(-1); the celluloses were highly crystalline, ranging from 82.47 to 84.57%; and the GSSA medians for the celluloses ranged from 1,298.60 cm(2) g(-1) to 2,493.20 cm(2) g(-1). Most processing treatments on the FC+ reduced the amount of reducing sugar released and increased RCI. Cellulose hydrolysis rates did not show a strong correlation with the physical characterization. These results suggest that (1) celluloses and PMR can serve as abundant sources of bioavailable carbon in water treatment systems, and (2) the use of correlative physical characteristics to evaluate a cellulose-based commercial product may not accurately predict microbial activity; a complementary microbial test such as cellulose hydrolysis with cellulase may prove useful.  相似文献

The extensive work carried out during more than a decade by the International Subcommission on Ordovician Stratigraphy has resulted in a new global classification of the Ordovician System into three series and seven stages. Formal Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Points (GSSPs) for all stages have been selected and these and the new stage names have been ratified by the International Commission on Stratigraphy. Based on a variety of biostratigraphic data, these new units are correlated with chronostratigraphic series and stages in the standard regional classifications used in the UK, North America, Baltoscandia, Australia, China, Siberia and the Mediterranean‐North Gondwana region. Furthermore, based mainly on graptolite and conodont zones, the Ordovician is subdivided into 20 stage slices (SS) that have potential for precise correlations in both carbonate and shale facies. The new chronostratigraphic scheme is also tied to a new composite δ13C curve through the entire Ordovician.  相似文献

The detection, attribution and prediction of global and large scale regional change are goals for the Global Observing Systems of the United Nations. Coastal areas are particularly sensitive to global change, but there is a variety of limitations to universal coverage of observations. The coastal module of the Global Terrestrial Observing System (C-GTOS) considers sentinel ecosystems to address these goals for the terrestrial, wetland and freshwater ecosystems of the coast. Sentinel ecosystems for observing systems are a limited number of well understood systems that have substantial datasets and are observed in a sustained fashion, forming an early warning and core system for broader regional and global change. A necessary step in the development of C-GTOS is the examination of current definitions of coastal areas by anticipated users and information providers, and identification of potential coastal networks and sites. We applied the sentinel system framework to the selection of C-GTOS observation sites from several international programs using various global delineations of coastal areas. Delineations were based on the most common definitions of the coast adopted by potential C-GTOS users and information providers, and included mapped areas of various distance from the coastline, coastal areas of low elevation, and a seaward boundary matching the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). Decreases in the number of sites within each international program occurred with each definition marking area closer to the coastline. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands demonstrates the greatest percentage of coastal sites by any definition. The process of choosing specific sentinel sites for C-GTOS continues from this initial screening, and is the next step towards the development of an in situ site network supporting the observation of global and large scale change. This paper summarizes the results of investigations carried out in the Mokrá quarry since 2006 on the biostratigraphy of the Tournaisian-Visean (T-V) boundary interval. It also integrates previous results obtained by J. Kalvoda and collaborators. The main focus is on the boundary itself, but stratigraphically lower and higher levels have been investigated as well to provide a biostratigraphical context spanning the late Tournaisian to early Visean. This stratigraphical level has been the focus of intense international research in the recent years under the auspices of the Subcommission on Carboniferous Stratigraphy (SCCS) in order to find a new criterion and reference section (Global Stratotype Section and Point, GSSP) for the base of the Visean Stage. The appearance of Eoparastaffella simplex from its ancestor E.ovalis” and the Pengchong section (Guangxi, southern China) have recently been proposed by the Task Group on the Tournaisian-Visean Boundary and ratified by the SCCS as the new biostratigraphic criterion and GSSP for the base of the Visean, respectively. The sequence exposed in Mokrá is not suitable as a GSSP, notably because it is an active quarry, but it contains most of the foraminifer and conodont guides allowing a high-resolution biostratigraphy of the boundary interval. In addition, it contains abundant trilobites. For these reasons, it constitutes one of the best sections across the T-V boundary in Europe and can serve as a useful additional reference.  相似文献

The base of the Rhaetian stage (Norian/Rhaetian boundary, NRB) is still awaiting formal designation by the International Commission on Stratigraphy. At present, only the 4.30‐m‐thick Steinbergkogel section (Austria) has been proposed as GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) candidate for the base of the Rhaetian. Here we present data from the 63‐m‐thick Pignola‐Abriola section (Southern Apennines, Italy) that we consider an alternative candidate for the Rhaetian GSSP. The Pignola‐Abriola basinal section, represented by hemipelagic–pelagic carbonate successions belonging to the Lagonegro Basin, matches all the requirements for a GSSP: 1, it is well exposed with minimal structural deformation; 2, it is rich in age diagnostic fossils (e.g. conodonts and radiolarians); 3, it yields a geochemical record suitable for correlation (e.g. δ13Corg/carb); and 4, it has a robust magnetostratigraphy and is correlated with the Newark APTS for age approximation of the NRB and additional Rhaetian bioevents. In the Pignola‐Abriola section, we opt to place the NRB at the 44.4 metre level, coincident with a prominent negative shift of ca. 6‰ of the δ13Corg. This level is located 50 cm below the FAD of conodont Misikella posthernsteini s.s within the radiolarian Proparvicingula moniliformis Zone. Both the negative δ13Corg shift and the FAD of Misikella posthernsteini occur within Pignola‐Abriola magnetozone MPA‐5r, at ~205.7 Ma, according to magnetostratigraphical correlation to the Newark APTS. We also illustrate the coeval Mt. Volturino stratigraphical section deposited below the calcite compensation depth (CCD) within the same Lagonegro Basin and characterized by a detailed radiolarian biostratigraphy and strong δ13Corg negative shift around the NRB.  相似文献

Sequence-stratigraphic analysis of the Middle Cambrian Highland Peak, Bonanza King, Swasey, and Wheeler formations in the Great Basin refines platform-to-basin correlations and distinguishes local tectonic events from eustasy. This analysis provides a reliable sea-level history through the Ptychagnostus gibbus and Ptychagnostus atavus trilobite intervals and confirms that the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) at the first appearance datum (FAD) of P. atavus was deposited during an overall sea-level rise. Deposition during the Middle Cambrian Ehmaniella/Bolaspidella biozones in the western U.S. is represented by two lithologically distinct successions: (1) a poorly fossiliferous, shallow-water, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic succession that is widespread across southern Nevada and southeastern California and (2) a highly fossiliferous, deeper water, fine-grained, siliciclastic succession in central Nevada and western Utah. The deeper water succession was deposited within the fault-controlled House Range Embayment and contains the P. atavus GSSP. Correlation of these disparate successions had been hampered by a lack of high-resolution biostratigraphic data, and limited chemostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. In this study, sequence-stratigraphic analysis indicates that the Condor Member of the Highland Peak Formation and the “mixed unit” of the Bonanza King Formation are the shallow-water platform equivalents of the basal Wheeler Formation encompassing the P. gibbus and lower P. atavus zones. The deepening event that is recorded in the P. gibbus Zone represents a major flooding surface that may be used as an important event marker for regional and global correlation. The overlying P. atavus GSSP, however, is within the later stage of transgression and may represent a globally synchronous event that can be correlated from platform to basin.  相似文献

The Mechetlino Quarry section is a potential candidate for the Global Section Stratotype and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Global Kungurian Stage on the International Stratigraphic Chart. In 2017, the Mechetlino Quarry section became the part of the First Geopark in Russia, therefore excavation work was carried out to clear it, a road was laid, and infrastructure was developed. Recent evidence to justify the base Kungurian boundary in the Mechetlino section was obtained. Additional conodonts confirmed the data of V.V. Chernykh on the Artinskian–Kungurian transition. Besides Neostreptognathodus pnevi Kozur and Movshovitsch, the second marker (N. lectulus Chernykh) of the base-Kungurian was established. The Artinskian–Kungurian transition of the Mechetlino Quarry section is characterized by the richest associations of small foraminifers, ammonoids, and other groups. The occurrence of mass Clausiuraloceras above the Kungurian boundary, which changed the representative Artinskian association, was identified. Small foraminifers of the Artinskian–Kungurian transition are numerous and include sufficient species to provide a correlation with Western Tethys, Svalbard and Australia. Data on isotopic ratios of δ13C and δ18O, δ13Corg values and the magnetic susceptibility were obtained for the first time.  相似文献

Health research has been identified as a vehicle for advancing global justice in health. However, in bioethics, issues of global justice are mainly discussed within an ongoing debate on the conditions under which international clinical research is permissible. As a result, current ethical guidance predominantly links one type of international research (biomedical) to advancing one aspect of health equity (access to new treatments). International guidelines largely fail to connect international research to promoting broader aspects of health equity – namely, healthier social environments and stronger health systems. Bioethical frameworks such as the human development approach do consider how international clinical research is connected to the social determinants of health but, again, do so to address the question of when international clinical research is permissible. It is suggested that the narrow focus of this debate is shaped by high‐income countries' economic strategies. The article further argues that the debate's focus obscures a stronger imperative to consider how other types of international research might advance justice in global health. Bioethics should consider the need for non‐clinical health research and its contribution to advancing global justice.  相似文献

The global fight against infectious diseases, both emerging and re-emerging, endures. Japan's commitments and reputation as a good global citizen and its responsibility to uphold domestic and international human security mean that it is in Japan's best interest to leverage its innovative and technological capabilities for global infectious disease prevention and control. The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund), an international non-profit organization based in Tokyo, Japan, was established by the Japanese government, multiple Japanese pharmaceutical companies, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as the first fund of its kind, with an aim to tackle the global burden of infectious diseases by facilitating and funding global health R&D of drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics. Since its inception in 2013, the GHIT Fund has invested more than 209 million USD in more than 90 projects, which consist of collaborations among Japanese and non-Japanese entities, six of which have already progressed to clinical stage development. Japan will continue to play a major role in the global health arena by further advancing R&D innovations for infectious diseases.  相似文献

The Gillespie Stochastic Simulation Algorithm (GSSA) and its variants are cornerstone techniques to simulate reaction kinetics in situations where the concentration of the reactant is too low to allow deterministic techniques such as differential equations. The inherent limitations of the GSSA include the time required for executing a single run and the need for multiple runs for parameter sweep exercises due to the stochastic nature of the simulation. Even very efficient variants of GSSA are prohibitively expensive to compute and perform parameter sweeps. Here we present a novel variant of the exact GSSA that is amenable to acceleration by using graphics processing units (GPUs). We parallelize the execution of a single realization across threads in a warp (fine-grained parallelism). A warp is a collection of threads that are executed synchronously on a single multi-processor. Warps executing in parallel on different multi-processors (coarse-grained parallelism) simultaneously generate multiple trajectories. Novel data-structures and algorithms reduce memory traffic, which is the bottleneck in computing the GSSA. Our benchmarks show an 8×−120× performance gain over various state-of-the-art serial algorithms when simulating different types of models.

识别出Baltoniodus trian-gularis(Lindstr m)的先驱:Baltonioduscf.B.triangularis(Lindstr m)与Baltoniodus triangularis(Lindstr m)的区别。描述新建化石带属种,包括Baltoniodus triangularis(Lindstr m)。 其中Trapezognathus diprion带和Baltonioduscf.B.triangularis带为新建化石带。  相似文献

A new international initiative for plant conservation was first called for as a resolution of the International Botanical Congress in 1999. The natural home for such an initiative was considered to be the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD agreed to consider a Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) at its 5th meeting in 2000. It was proposed that the GSPC could provide an innovative model approach for target setting within the CBD and, prior to COP5, a series of inter-sessional papers on proposed targets and their justification were developed by plant conservation experts. Key factors that ensured the adoption of the GSPC by the CBD in 2002 included: (1) ensuring that prior to and during COP5, key Parties in each region were supportive of the Strategy; (2) setting targets at the global level and not attempting to impose these nationally; and (3) the offer by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) to support a GSPC position in the CBD Secretariat for 3 years, which provided a clear indication of the support for the GSPC from non-governmental organizations (NGO).  相似文献

The Gorrondatxe section, a prospective Lutetian Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), has recently been used as the master reference section to reassess the correlation between Eocene magnetostratigraphic and calcareous planktonic biostratigraphic scales. However, the exact calibration of some events remained ill defined, as they were thought to be missing in Gorrondatxe due to a fault. The most important missing events were the first occurrence of the planktonic foraminifera Turborotalia frontosa and the C22n/C21r chron boundary. Either might be a reliable correlation criterion for the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary, as both approach the age of the original Lutetian Stratotype. New studies allowed the identification of the former event 9 m above the Gorrondatxe fault, within magnetic polarity Chron C21r and calcareous nannofossil Zone CP12a. Distinctive test features that characterize the most primitive morphotype of T. frontosa are described. Despite the high turbidite content, recurrent pelagic limestone–marl couplets and bundles occur, whose formation was driven by precession and eccentricity astronomical cycles. The first occurrence of T. frontosa was found 27 couplets and 5.5 bundles (60 m) below the first occurrence of the calcareous nannofossil Blackites inflatus , which is dated at 48 Ma. Hence, the age of the first occurrence of T. frontosa is estimated at 48.55 Ma, confirming that it is the most suitable planktonic foraminiferal correlation criterion for the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary. These results show that the stratigraphic interval missing due to the Gorrondatxe fault cannot be greater than a few metres and reinforce the value of this section as a prospective Lutetian GSSP.  相似文献

The Luoyixi section, exposed in a roadcut along the Youshui River (Fengtan Reservoir), Guzhang County, Hunan Province, China, is proposed as the stratotype for the base of an unnamed stage boundary (base of the Cambrian stage provisionally termed Stage 7). The proposed position of the GSSP is 121.3 m above the base of the Huaqiao Formation, at a horizon coinciding with the first appearance of the cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Lejopyge laevigata. The section fulfills all the requirements for a GSSP, and the horizon can be constrained not only with the primary stratigraphic marker (L. laevigata) but also with secondary biostratigraphic, sequence-stratigraphic, and chemostratigraphic correlation tools. The first appearance of L. laevigata is one of the most readily recognizable levels in the Cambrian, and can be correlated with precision to all paleocontinents.  相似文献
