Crustaceans are second intermediate hosts to several microphallid species (Trematoda). Some of these parasites are potentially pathogenic or manipulative. A laboratory experiment was performed to assess the impact of microphallids on the survival, growth and fecundity of Cyathura carinata, a protogynous hermaphroditic isopod, widespread within European estuaries. For nearly 12 weeks, experimental populations of infected and non-infected isopods were kept at 25 °C. C. carinata carrying microphallid cysts showed higher mortality rates than non-infected specimens and were not able to produce embryos. The reduced fecundity of infected isopods could be caused by parasite-induced castration and/or by mating failure due to behavioural modifications in one of the sexes. It might also be associated with lower growth rates and lower moulting frequencies, since infected C. carinata were significantly smaller than the non-infected after 9 weeks. This may imply a setback for the isopods to achieve sexual maturity (which may also affect the population sex ratio) and for females to lay their eggs in the marsupia. Regardless of the mechanisms involved, microphallids may have severe consequences for their host populations, through negative effects on survival, growth and fecundity. For species with direct development, such as C. carinata, parasite-induced reproduction failure may contribute to temporal fluctuations of abundance. Based on the present results, it is recommended to include parasites as an important factor influencing host populations from shallow-water ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary Under conditions where both plants had permanently low water status, the mistletoe, Amyema miquelii (Lehm. ex Miq.) Tiegh., had lower nitrogen contents in leaf tissue than its host, Eucalyptus behriana F. Muell. The parasite transpired less than its host which is consistent with the hypothesis that mistletoe transpiration acts as a nitrogen gathering mechanism. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents were generally low in both plants; they were positively correlated, and mistletoes reduced nutrient contents of infested hosts. The carbon discrimination ratio, 13C (a measure of water-use efficiency) of each plant was within the range reported for other mistletoes and their hosts. Although it did not differ significantly between host and parasite it indicated lower water-use efficiency in the mistletoe. For the nitrogen content of host leaves the gradient within the pair, (13C), is much lower compared to the correlation given by Ehleringer et al. (1985). It is concluded that at permanently low water status on nitrogen and phosphorus deficient soils a water-saving strategy accompanied with slow growth is more appropriate for both mistletoe and host.  相似文献

The role of parasites in influencing the trophic dynamics of hosts is becoming increasingly recognized in the ecological literature. Echinococcus granulosus is a tapeworm that relies on the predator-prey relationship between the definitive host (wolf, Canis lupus) and the intermediate host, (moose, Alces alces) to complete its life cycle. Heavy infection by E. granulosus may predispose moose to increased risk of predation by wolves. Theory predicts that parasite-induced vulnerability to predation will reduce the degree of aggregation of parasites in a host population. We tested for different levels of aggregation of E. granulosus in moose in areas of low, moderate, and high levels of wolf predation using Greens coefficient of dispersion. Parasite aggregation was lower in an area with high predation rate, thus we hypothesize that heavy infection by E. granulosus predisposes moose to predation by wolves. This increase in predation rate due to parasite infection may influence the role of wolves in regulating moose populations. We discuss alternative explanations for the negative correlation between predation rate and parasite aggregation.An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Russian apple R12740-7A is the designation for an accession grown from seed collected in Russia, which was found to be highly resistant to apple scab. The resistance has historically been attributed to a naturally pyramided complex involving three major genes: one race-nonspecific gene, Vr, conditioning resistance to all known races, plus two race-specific genes. The race-nonspecific gene was identified as an independently segregating gene by Dayton and Williams (1968) and is referred to in this paper as Vr-DW. The first researchers to study the scab resistance gene complex in Russian apple never described the phenotype conditioned by the race-nonspecific gene. Later, Aldwinckle et al. (1976) associated the name Vr with a scab resistance gene conditioning distinctive stellate necrotic reactions, which we refer to as Vr-A in order to distinguish it from Vr-DW. We show that the segregation ratios in progenies from the scab differential hosts 2 and 4 that are derived from Russian apple, crossed with susceptible cultivars were consistent with a single gene conditioning resistance in each host. The genes have been named Vh2 and Vh4, respectively. Resistant segregants from host 2 showed stellate necrotic reactions, while those from host 4 showed hypersensitive reactions. Both the phenotypes and the genetic maps for the genes in the respective hosts were very similar to those of the genes previously named Vr-A and Vx, respectively, in an F1 family of Russian apple. We showed that race 2 of V. inaequalis isolated from host 2 was able to infect resistant descendants of the non-differential accession PRI 442-23 as well as host 2. The descendants of PRI 442-23 were expected to carry the race-nonspecific Vr-DW gene, but in fact carry Vr-A. We conclude that the Vh2 gene in host 2 and Vr-A are the same, and that the Vh4 gene in host 4 and Vx are the same. However, a major finding of this study is that the latter gene mapped to linkage group 2 of apple instead of linkage group 10 as suggested from previous research. With the two race-specific genes from Russian apple defined now, we discuss the nature of the race-nonspecific Vr-DW gene in this accession. We also report the identification of a new scab resistance gene, VT57, from either Golden Delicious or Red Dougherty, which conditions chlorotic resistance reactions and is linked to Vh2.  相似文献

Infection of Hordeum vulgare L. by Pyrenophora teresand of Zea mays by Dreschslera maydis were characterized by green island formation, higher cytokinin levels and accumulation of metabolites in the infected areas. Higher cytokinin concentrations of the order 6-Y,Y-dimethylallylaminopurine > zeatinriboside > zeatin >dihydrozeatinriboside were detected at infection sites of susceptible hosts. By virtue of these cytokinins, infection sites may be acting as metabolic sinks helping proliferation of the pathogen. Existence of translocatory sinks at infection zones was confirmed from autoradiographic studies,where, accumulation of labeled metabolites was prominent at infection sites of susceptible hosts. Upon infection the lower cytokinin levels of resistant hosts decreased further with progress of infection. In the infected resistant hosts the concentrations of zeatin/zeatinriboside were the maximum among the four identified cytokinins. The pathogen is also capable of secreting cytokinins as evident from quantification of cytokinins in culture filtrate extracts using HPLC. Since detached leaves were used in the experiments the increase/decrease of various cytokinin levels may be attributed to pathogen influence. The increase in cytokinin levels in the susceptible host may be aiding the growth of the pathogen on one hand, while the decrease in the infected resistant host may signal the host to activate defenses against a potential pathogen at the early stage of infection.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The sites and modes of interaction between G protein-coupled receptors and their cognate heterotrimeric G proteins remain poorly defined. The C-terminus of the G subunit is the best established site of contact of G proteins with receptors, but structural analyses and crosslinking studies suggest the possibility of interactions at the N-terminus of G as well. We screened for mutations in the N-terminal region of the G subunit encoded by the yeast GPA1 gene that specifically affect the ability of the G protein to be activated by the yeast -mating factor receptor. The screen led to identification of substitutions of glutamine or proline for Leu18 of Gpa1p that reduce the response to the pheromones -factor and a-factor without affecting cellular levels of the subunit or its ability to interact with and subunits. The mutations do not appear to affect the intrinsic ability of the G protein to be converted to the activated state. The low yield of different mutations with this phenotype indicates either that the N-terminal segment of the yeast G subunit does not undergo extensive interactions with the -factor receptor, or that this region can not be altered without detrimental effects upon the formation of G protein trimers.Communicated by D. Summary The sex ratios of three Mesopolobus species were found to vary in different hosts in a gall-forming community in Berkshire. These relationships were consistent with Charnov's host size—sex ratio hypothesis (Charnov 1979). Due to the segregation of host species on different species of Quercus, it was possible to conduct a geographical variation experiment proposed by Charnov et al. (1981). The results of this experiment suggest that the parasitoids have a fixed rule of thumb and are not flexible in their sex allocation in response to changes in host size distribution. The data, therefore, do not support the prediction of Charnov's hypothesis. Problems associated with this kind of field experiment are discussed.  相似文献

The phytophagous ladybird beetle, Epilachna pustulosa Kôno occurs mainly on the thistle Cirsium kamtschaticum Ledeb. In recent years, we have confirmed feeding and oviposition by E.pustulosa, and some degree of larval development of this beetle, on a naturalized congeneric thistle, Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Tenore. In this study, we assessed the host suitability of C.vulgare for E.pustulosa, using larval rearing and simple food choice tests, by comparing the performance on, and preference for, their legitimate host C.kamtschaticum. All experiments were initiated in July, when the utilization of C.vulgare by E.pustulosa became obvious. For larval performance, E.pustulosa showed a lower eclosion rate, shorter developmental duration and smaller body size when reared on C.vulgare than on C.kamtschaticum. Cirsium vulgare appeared to be a less adequate larval food than C.kamtschaticum. Adult feeding preference was altered seasonally; females preferred C.kamtschaticum to C.vulgare in a food choice test conducted in early July, whereas they showed the opposite preference in tests conducted in mid and late July. The utilization of C.vulgare by E.pustulosa appeared to be induced by qualitative deterioration of C.kamtschaticum leaves in July, which resulted in increased dispersion of adult beetles.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that all populations of cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis prefer pitaya agria cactus, Stenocereus gummosus, over all other potential hosts for feeding and breeding, including populations that inhabit areas where no agria grows. We sampled five geographically isolated populations of D. mojavensis from nature to assess host choice within and between populations. Host choice tests were performed in a laboratory olfactometer by allowing adult D. mojavensis to choose between plumes of synthetic volatile cocktails of two widespread host cacti. Overall, each population showed significant preference for agria volatiles with one exception: a mainland Sonora population that uses organ pipe cactus in nature exhibited preference for organ pipe volatiles, suggesting a possible shift in host preference. The degree of preference for agria volatiles was greatest in a population from southern California that use California barrel cactus as a host. Since southern Californian populations of D. mojavensis are thought to be derived from those in Baja California, preference for agria volatiles is considered a retained ancestral trait. Three populations from Baja California and mainland Mexico that use agria in the wild expressed lower, but similar preferences for agria volatiles. Because populations of D. mojavensis are ancestral to those in mainland Mexico, Arizona, and California, the shift from agria to alternate hosts has not been accompanied by strong changes in host preference behavior.  相似文献

Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch and Thelephora terrestris Ehrl. per Fr. were grown in well watered soil (s –0.03 MPa) or subjected to a long-term soil water stress of up to –1.0 MPa over 13-week period in a glasshouse. After 13 weeks, all seedling containers were watered to field capacity and then water was withheld from the E. camaldulensis seedlings to induce a short-term drought. Diurnal measurements of seedling photosynthesis rate (A), leaf stomatal conductance (g) and leaf water potential (p) were completed before, during, and after the short term drought. Although they were growing in an equal soil volume, photosynthesis rate (A), leaf stomatal conductance and leaf water potential (p) of larger seedlings with P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae were similar to those of smaller seedlings colonized with T. terrestris during the short-term drought period. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius maintained higher photosynthesis rates over the course of the short-term drought. Thus, P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae appear to be more efficient than those of T. terrestris in assisting seedlings to maintain gas exchange and photosynthesis under limited soil moisture conditions.  相似文献

We measured the effects of oviposition by the spittlebug Aphrophora pectoralis on shoot growth and bud production in two willow species, Salix miyabeana and Salix sachalinensis. In autumn, adult females of A.pectoralis insert their ovipositor into the apical region of 1-year-old shoots, resulting in the death of most shoot tips within 1week. Consequently, an increase in the number of dead buds and a decrease in the number of vegetative buds on 1-year-old shoots was recorded. In the following spring, the growth of current-year shoots was greatly increased on 1-year-old shoots damaged by spittlebug oviposition. Furthermore, spittlebug oviposition increased the production rate of vegetative buds in both S.miyabeana and S.sachalinensis. However, no impact on the production rate of reproductive buds was detected in either willow. We conclude that the compensatory growth of current-year shoots and an increase in vegetative buds in the two willow species was caused by oviposition of A.pectoralis.  相似文献

Zeins from Zea mays L cv. Maya and coixins from Coix lacryma-jobi L. cv. Adlay were fractionated to obtain -, -, and -zein and -, -, and -coixin. The -coixins were composed of 4 polypeptide classes of 27 kDa (C1), 25 kDa (C2), 17 kDa (C4) and 15 kDa (C5) with solubility properties very similar to those of the 22 kDa and 19 kDa -zeins. Like the -zeins, the C1 and C2 -coixins corresponded to 80% of total Coix prolamins. The fraction corresponding to -coixin contained only one protein band of 22 kDa (C3). This coixin fraction has solubility properties similar to those of -zein and represents 15% of the total coixin. The -zein fraction was composed of a major 17 kDa protein band, while the -coixin fraction consisted of a mixture of - and -coixins.Polyclonal antibodies raised against C1 recognized C1 and C2 and cross-reacted strongly with the 22 kDa -zein, as did C4 and C5 antisera. The antiserum against -coixin showed strong cross-reaction with -zein. The homology between coixins and zeins was further investigated by using Southern hybridization analyses. The genomic DNA of maize and Coix were digested with several restriction enzymes and probed with cDNA clones representing 19 and 22 kDa -zeins as well as the 28 and 16 kDa -zeins. The Coix genome showed complex cross-hybridization sequences with the 22 kDa -zein cDNA, while no cross-hybridization was observed with the 19 kDa cDNA clone. The cDNA clone representing the 28 kDa -zein cross-hybridized with only one band of Coix genomic DNA, in contrast to the three bands observed in maize. This same Coix sequence also cross-hybridized with the cDNA clone representing the 16 kDa -zein. The relevance of these findings are discussed in the context of the origin of zein and coixin genes.  相似文献

In nature, parasite transmission from one host to the next takes place within complex biotic communities where non-host organisms can reduce transmission rates, for instance by preying on infective stages. We experimentally investigated the impact of four very different non-host organisms on the transmission of the microphallid trematode Maritrema novaezealandensis from its snail first intermediate host to its crustacean second intermediate host. We show that in laboratory mesocosms, accumulation of parasites in juvenile stalk-eyed mud crabs, Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Ocypodidae), was not reduced in the presence of cockles, Austrovenus stutchburyi, barnacles, Balanus sp., or the algae Enteromorpha spp., three organisms whose feeding mode or general abundance could negatively impact the parasite's infective stages (cercariae). In contrast, the presence of the anemone Anthopleura aureoradiata in the mesocosms caused a more than 4-fold reduction in the number of parasites acquired by crabs when compared to control mesocosms. Observations on fluorescent-dyed cercariae confirmed that they are ingested by anemones. Given the often high densities of anemones on mudflats, they may represent an important regulator of the abundance of M. novaezealandensis, and thus of the impact of this parasite on its hosts. These anemones may decrease cercarial transmission for many other trematode species as well. Our results stress the need for studies of parasite transmission in natural contexts rather than under simplified laboratory conditions.  相似文献

The solitary larval ectoparasitoid, Syngaster lepidus Brullé, parasitizes the cryptic larvae of two wood-boring beetles, Phoracantha recurva Newman and Phoracantha semipunctata F. The objective of this study was to determine how the female parasitoids allocated the sex of progeny when presented with larval hosts of uniform size classes. Host size was directly correlated with age of the Phoracantha larval hosts. Groups of Phoracantha larvae of a single age class (2-, 3-, 4-, or 5-week-old) were exposed to parasitoids, and sex ratios of the resulting parasitoid progeny from each host age class were determined. A significant relationship was observed among the sizes of P. recurva and P. semipunctata hosts and the sex ratio of emerging parasitoids. Parasitized 2-week-old beetle larvae of both Phoracantha spp. produced only male S. lepidus progeny, whereas older larval hosts produced increasing proportions of female parasitoids (up to 80% females from 5-week-old hosts). Two-week-old Phoracantha larvae of both species produced fewer parasitoids than host larvae 3–5-week-old. The size of parasitoid progeny consistently increased with host larval age (size), and female parasitoids were larger than males across all host size classes. Male S. lepidus developed in approximately 25 days from 2-week-old hosts, and 19–21 days in 3–5-week-old hosts. Female S. lepidus developed in 22–25 days, with developmental time increasing with host size.  相似文献

In this paper we analysed autotrophic sources of the carbon ( 13C) and the trophic position ( 15N) of Leporinus friderici in the influence area of Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil. We collected samples of muscles of fish from different sizes riparian vegetation, C4 grasses, zooplankton, periphyton and particulate organic carbon (POC). There were significant differences for the carbon isotope proportion found in muscles of L.friderici in the different size groups analysed. The highest values of 13C recorded for middle sized individuals is attributed to the large contribution of C4 plants in their diet. Small individuals sampled upstream also receive similar contribution from C4 plants. In contrast the same size group sampled downstream from the reservoir, has a much smaller of C4 plants. The 13C negative character of small individuals from downstream is due to the larger contribution of C3 plants (except periphyton). At larger sizes we found intermediate 13C values. The 15N proportions we found for each size group were not significantly different, however we found decreasing mean values with increasing size. The trophic level calculated from the dietary data was higher than that found with the 13C concentration in the muscle, except for small individuals, when the values were equal.  相似文献

Summary A DNA fragment with homology to the cytokinin (ipt) gene from biotype I Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain Ach5 was cloned from the Ti plasmid of the wide host range biotype III Agrobacterium strain Tm-4 and sequenced. The fragment contains an intact ipt coding sequence. However, the 3 non-coding region of this ipt gene is rearranged due to a 0.9 kb deletion fusing it to the 3 coding region of the neighbouring gene 6a, most of which was found to be deleted. The Tm-4 ipt gene is strongly related to the partially deleted ipt gene of the limited host range biotype III strain Ag162. To test its biological activity, the Tm-4 ipt gene was inserted into a specially constructed, disarmed Ti vector lacking tzs and tested on tobacco, where the rearranged ipt gene induced shoot formation. The cloned Tm-4 ipt gene was mutated with Tn5 and the intact gene on the wild-type Tm-4 Ti plasmid was replaced by the mutated gene. The resulting strain was avirulent on tobacco but normally virulent on the natural host of the wild-type strain Tm-4, grapevine. As the biotype 1 6b gene diminishes the effect of a corresponding ipt gene, a larger Tm-4 fragment carrying both the ipt gene and an adjacent 6b-like gene was also tested on tobacco and compared with the Tm-4 ipt fragment alone and with an ipt and 6b/ipt fragment derived from Ach5. The Tm-4 6b gene diminishes the effect of the Tm-4 ipt gene, showing the Tm-4 6b gene to be active as well. The Tm-4 6b/ipt combination is less effective than the Ach5 combination. Synopsis Twenty-two samples of sand-dwelling fishes were collected from sublittoral sandy substrata off the Cape Peninsula, South Africa using a novel quantitative technique in which the ichthyocide, rotenone, was introduced beneath 6.25 m2 plastic sheets weighted around the perimeter with chain. A total of 94 fish of eight species and four families were recorded. Of these, four species of the family Clinidae made up 92% of the material. Fish densities varied from 0.10–2.96 fish m–2 (0.17–1.14 g m–2). Distribution patterns amongst the Clinidae were explained by sediment particle size, with all of the newly discovered species, Cancelloxus longior, inhabiting fine sand (median grain size 0.25–0.50 mm), and all Xenopoclinus leprosus, C. elongatus and Pavoclinus smalei occurring in gravel (> 1 mm). Xenopoclinus kochi was found in all sediment types, but was most abundant in coarse substrata. Diets of all four species were similar, consisting chiefly of amphipods and isopods. However, small differences in prey preference were evident. All four species reached sexual maturity at 25–30 mm standard length, were viviparous, exhibited superembryonation and gave birth to live young of approximately 14 mm. Phylogenetic analysis of the endo--1,4-glucanase gene family of Arabidopsis and other plants revealed a clear distinction in three subfamilies (, , and ). The - and -subfamily contains proteins believed to be involved in a number of physiological roles such as elongation, ripening, and abscission. The -subfamily is composed of proteins that are predicted to have a membrane-spanning domain and to be localized at the plasma membrane. Some of these proteins have been linked to cellulose biosynthesis by serving to hydrolyze a lipid-linked intermediate that acts as a primer for the elongation of -glucan chains during cellulose synthesis at the plasma membrane. Similar glucanases are important in cellulose biosynthesis in bacteria. Searches in the genomes of unrelated organisms that make cellulose, such as Ciona intestinalis and Dictyostelium discoideum, revealed the presence of membrane-linked endo--1,4-glucanases and it is suggested that these might also have a role in cellulose synthesis.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of ecosystem composition and structure (species richness and diversity, cover and spatial attributes of vegetation), abiotic factors (climate and topographical features) and the condition of the bare-ground areas (evaluated using soil-surface indicators) on the performance of Stipa tenacissima [evaluated using foliar 13C, 15N, nitrogen concentration and the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio] in 15 steppes of SE Spain. Foliar 13C values of S. tenacissima showed a low degree of variation in the studied steppes, with average values ranging from –24.1 to –22.9. Higher variation was found in the 15N values, which ranged from –5.5 to –2.4. The nitrogen concentration and the C:N ratio varied between 5.0 and 8.0 mg g–1, and between 55.4 and 85.3, respectively. The 13C values became less negative with increasing spatial aggregation of perennial vegetation, while the C:N values increased with increasing perennial vegetation cover. The 15N values became more negative with increasing infiltration in the bare-ground areas, but the nitrogen concentration was not related to any of the environmental variables measured. Our results suggest that the relative importance of ecosystem structure and soil-surface conditions in the bare ground areas was higher than that of abiotic factors as determinants of the performance of S. tenacissima. The results also show that even subtle changes in these ecosystem features may lead to modifications in plant performance in semiarid S. tenacissima steppes, and thus to modifications in the associated ecosystem functions in the mid- to long-term.  相似文献

For the structural analysis of the carbohydrate chains ofN-,O-glycoproteins a straightforward strategy was developed based on the cleavage of theN-linked chains with immobilized peptide-N 4-(N-acetyl--glucosaminyl) asparagine amidase-F (PN-Gase-F) fromFlavobacterium meningosepticum, followed by alkaline borohydride treatment of the remainingO-glycoprotein material. This methodology was applied to the isolation of the Asn- and Ser-linked carbohydrate chains of human chorionic gonadotrophin. The structures of the isolated oligosaccharides were verified by 500-MHz1H-NMR spectroscopy. The Asn-linked sugar chains were shown to be: NeuAc2-3Gal1-4GlcNAc1-2Man1-6[NeuAc2-3Gal1-4GlcNAc1-2Man1-3]Man 1-4GlcNAc1-4[Fuc1-6]0-1GlcNAc and Man1-6[NeuAc2-3Gal1-4GlcNAc1-2Man 1-3]Man1-4GlcNAc1-4GlcNAc. Also some minor constituents occurred.
