It is often recommended that in-season training programs aim to maintain muscular strength and power developed during the off-season. However, improvements in performance may be possible with a well-designed training regimen. The purpose of this case report is to describe the changes in physical performance after an in-season training regimen in professional female volleyball players in order to determine whether muscular strength and power might be improved. Apart from normal practice sessions, 10 elite female volleyball players completed 2 training sessions per week, which included both resistance training and plyometric exercises. Over the 12-week season, the athletes performed 3-4 sets of 3-8 repetitions for resistance and plyometric exercises during each training session. All sessions were supervised by one of the investigators as well as by the team head coach. Muscular strength and power were assessed before and after the 12-week training program using 4 repetition maximum bench press and parallel squat tests, an overhead medicine ball throw (BTd), as well as unloaded and loaded countermovement jumps (CMJs). Strength improved by 15% and 11.5% in the bench press and parallel squat, respectively (p < 0.0001). Distance in the BTd improved by 11.8% (p < 0.0001), whereas unloaded and loaded CMJ height increased between 3.8 and 11.2%. The current findings suggest that elite female volleyball players can improve strength and power during the competition season by implementing a well-designed training program that includes both resistance and plyometric exercises.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate bone mineral density (BMD) in the growing human mandible by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, comparing densitometric data with the nature of the dentition and hence, indirectly, with variation of mechanical stresses. Postero-anterior scans were performed on 58 dried mandibles (between 15 months and 14 years) by a Hologic QDR 1000 X-ray densitometer with "Ultra-Hi-Resolution" software (Hologic Inc., Waltham, MA). The analyses were performed on a polygonal area corresponding to the infero-median region of the mandibular body, and divided into three sections. The sample was divided into two groups according to the appearance of the first permanent molar. A high correlation is detectable between BMD values and age in the group with decidual dentition, while BMD values are significantly less correlated with age in the group with mixed dentition. There are no significant differences between the BMD values of males and females.  相似文献

Osteoporosis has been described extensively in adult thalassemics. Fewer studies have been reported in thalassemic children. In this article, we measured the bone mineral density (BMD) of Lebanese beta-thalassemic children before institution of a balanced transfusion-chelation regimen, in comparison with that of healthy controls, and studied its correlation with various demographic and biological parameters. Both groups, controls and thalassemics were comparable with respect to age, sex, socioeconomic and regional distribution. On the other hand, thalassemics had a significantly lower height age (p<0.001), lower bone age (p=0.001), lower sexual maturation (p=0.004), lower absolute BMD values and larger negative BMD-Z scores (p<0.001). Within the thalassemic group, BMD correlated significantly with luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol and testosterone values, as well as with the pretransfusion hematocrit, but not with other endocrine or bone metabolism parameters. We conclude that Lebanese beta-thalassemic children have a significantly lower BMD than their healthy counterparts due, in part, to their slower physical development. A major contributor seems to be the low-transfusion regimen followed by these patients, as well as the endocrine dysfunction which was detected in about 25% of them.  相似文献

Operation of the Mayak plutonium production association resulted in radioactive contamination of a part of Chelyabinsk Region in the 1950–1960s. Significant gas-aerosol emission of 131I occurred since 1948; in 1957, a radiation accident resulted in 90Sr contamination of large territories. This paper presents comparison of the bone mineral density of persons who lived on territories with different levels of 90Sr-soil contamination with that of a control group. It was found that in 1970–1975, the bone mineral density, estimated from the mineral content in bone samples, in residents of contaminated areas born in 1936–1952 was significantly lower compared to the control group. For persons born in 1880–1935, such differences were not found. It was shown that the decrease in the bone mineral density was not related to 90Sr exposure of osteogenic cells in the dose range from 0.1 to 1300 mGy: the coefficient of correlation between individual 90Sr doses and bone mineral contents is not significant. The decrease in bone mineral density of persons born in 1936–1952 may be associated with exposure of the thyroid and parathyroid glands (systemic regulators of calcium metabolism) to 131I from gas-aerosol emissions from Mayak. The highest levels of gas-aerosol emissions occurred in 1948–1954 and coincided with the growth and development of the thyroid gland, characterized by intensive accumulation of 131I, and with the growth and maturation of the skeleton of persons born in the given calendar years.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Osteopenia and osteoporosis because of hyperprolactinaemia caused by prolactinoma may be followed by an increased risk of fracture. There are no data on the bone effects of functional hyperprolactinaemia. The aim was to assess the influence of hyperprolactinaemia of various origins on bone turnover and density in different skeletal sites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out in 75 women (aged 30.53 +/- 7.8): Group I--32 women with prolactinoma and Group II--43 women with functional hyperprolactinaemia. Both groups of patients were subdivided into those with hypogonadism and those with normal gonadal function. The control group consisted of 29 healthy women aged (33.59 +/- 4.7). In all subjects PRL and bone turnover markers (BAP, OC, ICTP) were studied. BMD measurements (lumbar spine, forearm, proximal femur and total body) were carried out using DXA. RESULTS: Higher PRL concentrations were observed in patients than in controls. The values of bone turnover markers (BAP, ICTP) were shown to be higher in patient groups and subgroups than in controls. In patients with prolactinoma lumbar spine BMD was lower than in patients with functional hyperprolactinaemia and controls. Total body BMD was also lower, albeit to a lesser extent. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperprolactinaemia caused by prolactinoma in women influences bone metabolism unfavourably, more by the impact on the activity of bone turnover markers than on BMD. This provides an opportunity for earlier assessment of bone metabolism disturbances before the BMD changes can be observed. Functional hyperprolactinaemia does not determine such a harmful effect on bone metabolism as hyperprolactinemia due to prolactinoma.  相似文献

We performed a comparative study of bone mechanical properties in the radii of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), humans (Homo sapiens), and Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) using peripheral quantitative computed tomography. We investigated: (1)cortical bone area relative to the total periosteal area (PrA); (2) trabecular bone area relative to PrA; (3) cortical bone density; and (4) trabecular bone density. The cortical bone area index for chimpanzees was almost the same as that of Japanese macaques, whereas the equivalent value in humans was about the two-fifths that of the others. Values for the other three properties were constant among these three catarrhine species. Chimpanzees do not particularly resemble humans, but are more similar to digitigrade macaques in terms of bone properties. The constant trabecular bone area index and trabecular density value in these species may suggest that a certain amount of trabecular bone (20–30% of total bone area at the distal 4% level of the forearm) is necessary to achieve normal bone turnover. The physiological metabolism of bone, including cortical bone density, might be conserved in these catarrhines. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to examine 54 patients with breast cancer. A clinical comparison group comprised 50 healthy women. All the examinees were aged 45 to 55 years. Bone mineral density was measured in the lumbar spine, proximal femur, and ultradistal antibrachium. The X-ray densitometric values of bone tissues in perimenopausal women with breast cancer were not found to be abnormal, which led to the conclusion that there were no significant bone metabolic disturbances. Along with this it was established that the women at this age had considerably reduced bone mineral density in the epimetaphyseal (ultradistal) forearm with evolving osteopenia. In this connection, it is expedient to identify an ultradistal portion of the antibrachium as an object of X-ray densitometric examination for the early diagnosis of impaired bone mineralization in women in the 45-to-55-year-old age group.  相似文献

In order to identify genetic effects of allelic variation on bone mineral density (BMD), association studies have been performed recently. Examining the relation between PvuII and XbaI restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLPs) at the estrogen receptor (ER alpha) gene and BMD, in women or men, have yielded conflicting results. We analyzed the association between this polymorphism and BMD Z score values of cancellous bone at the 3rd finger in 344 members of nuclear families of European population, Chuvasha, living in Russia. The population sample included 183 males, aged 18-84, and 161 females, aged 23-79. The analysis has been performed separately for both sexes and for both generations (parents and offspring). We used a novel direct haplotyping method, which determines simultaneously each of the PvuII and XbaI RFLPs and their relation to each other. The haplotypes were represented as the combination of both polymorphic sites on the same chromosome, by using P/p and X/x for PvuII and XbaI restriction sites, respectively. The subjects were classified into 3 groups of genotypes: A = PXPX (homozygote for the PX haplotype); B = PXPx, PXpx (the heterozygotes for the PX haplotype); C = PxPx, Pxpx, pxpx (genotypes that are lacking the PX haplotype). The PXPX genotype (A) was associated with higher BMD Z score values in comparison to the genotypes that are lacking the PX haplotype (C), in total males [0.618 vs. -0.133 (p = 0.004)] and for the "sons" generation [0.724 vs. -0.198 (p = 0.02)]. Similar tendency was observed for the "fathers" generation (0.539 vs. -0.085), though the difference did not approach statistical significance (p = 0.087). These findings were not found in the female samples, nor in the "mothers" or "daughters" generations. The question if there are differences in the mode of action of estrogen through its receptor on bone mass, between the genders or between the males' generations, have to be further investigated.  相似文献

Preventive programs aimed at maximizing peak bone mass as a way of reducing the risk of osteoporotic fractures later in life should take into account the contribution of nutritional factors to bone mass accumulation in young age. The role of calcium and energy intakes on radial mineral density was investigated in 200 healthy girls (aged 11-15 yr) simultaneously evaluating serum changes of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and osteocalcin (OC). Dietary calcium and energy intakes were assessed by a 3-day food record method, bone mineral density (BMD) was performed at ultradistal (ud) and proximal (pr) radial sites using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Calcium consumption below the levels suggested by Dietary Reference Intakes in more than 80% of population studied was not related to BMD, which in turn markedly increased in post-compared to premenarcheal girls. Interestingly, in a multiple regression analysis PTH was inversely related to BMD after adjustment for calcium intake, bone age and menarche. Serum IGF-I was positively associated to energy intakes and bone age in girls before menarche, who exhibited the highest values of OC. Our data highlighted the role of food habits in modulating some hormonal response that might influence bone mineral apposition during adolescent age. Low calcium consumption associated to enhanced PTH values, if persisting, could be responsible for reduced rate of gain in bone mineral density. Thus, to optimize bone mineralization during the critical period of rapid body growth adequate intakes of calcium and energy should be recommended.  相似文献

Pelvic fractures resulting from automotive side impacts are associated with high mortality and morbidity, as well as substantial economic costs. Previous experimental studies have produced varying results regarding the tolerance of the pelvis to lateral force and compression. While bone mineral density (BMD) has been shown to correlate with fracture loads in the proximal femur, no such correlation has been established for the pelvis. Presently, we studied the relationships between total hip BMD and impact response parameters in lateral impacts of twelve isolated human pelves. The results indicated that total hip BMD significantly correlated with fracture force, Fmax, and maximum ring compression, Cmax, of the fractured pelves. These findings are evidence that BMD may be useful in assessing the risk of pelvic fracture in automotive side impacts. Poor correlation was observed between total hip BMD and maximum viscous response, (VC)max, energy at fracture, Epeak, and time to fracture, tpeak. Mean Fmax and calculated tolerances for Cmax and (VC)max were lower than those established in previous studies using full cadavers, likely a result of our removal of soft tissues from the pelves prior to impact.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify the candidate causal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and candidate causal mechanisms that contribute to bone mineral density (BMD) and to generate a SNP to gene to pathway hypothesis using an analytical pathway-based approach. We used hip BMD GWAS data of the genotypes of 301,019 SNPs in 5,715 Europeans. ICSNPathway (identify candidate causal SNPs and pathways) analysis was applied to the BMD GWAS dataset. The first stage involved the pre-selection of candidate causal SNPs by linkage disequilibrium analysis and the functional SNP annotation of the most significant SNPs found. The second stage involved the annotation of biological mechanisms for the pre-selected candidate causal SNPs using improved-gene set enrichment analysis. ICSNPathway analysis identified seven candidate SNPs, eight candidate pathways, and seven hypothetical biological mechanisms. Eight pathways are as follows; gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane degradation (nominal p-value < 0.001, false discovery rate (FDR) <0.001), regulation of the smoothened signaling pathway (nominal p-value < 0.001, FDR = 0.016), TACI and BCMA stimulation of B cell immune response (nominal p-value < 0.001, FDR = 0.021), endonuclease activity (nominal p-value = 0.001, FDR = 0,026), regulation of defense response to virus (nominal p-value = 0.001, FDR = 0.028), serine_type_endopeptidase_inhibitor_activity (nominal p-value = 0.001, FDR = 0.044), endoribonuclease activity (nominal p-value = 0.002, FDR = 0.045), and myeloid leukocyte differentiation (nominal p-value = 0.001, FDR = 0.050). The most significant causal pathway was gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane degradation. CYP3A5, PON2, PON3, CMBL, PON1, ALPL, CYP3A43, CYP3A7, ACP6, ACPP, and ALPI (p < 0.05) are involved in the pathway of gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane degradation. Further examination of the gene contents revealed that DBR1, DICER1, EXO1, FEN1, POP1, POP4, RPP30, and RPP38 were involved in 2 of the 8 pathways (p < 0.05). By applying ICSNPathway analysis to BMD GWAS data, we identified seven candidate SNPs and eight pathways involving gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane degradation, which may contribute to low BMD.  相似文献

It is unknown whether replacement doses of cortisone acetate and the absence of the small amounts of androgens secreted by the adrenal cortex may cause osteoporosis. This was studied in 35 patients (12 men and 23 women) suffering from primary adrenocortical failure and taking cortisone acetate 25-37.5 mg and fludrocortisone 50-100 micrograms daily. Bone mineral density was measured by single photon absorptiometry at the midshaft of the radius, representing cortical bone, and at the distal part of the radius, a site with a significant trabecular component. The bone mineral density was normal in premenopausal female patients as well as in male patients, showing that replacement doses of cortisone acetate do not affect bone mass. By contrast, in postmenopausal patients there was a dramatic bone loss in addition to the physiological postmenopausal decrease in bone mass. This loss, combined with the low plasma concentrations of androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, and testosterone (and low concentrations of oestrone of adrenal origin), indicates that adrenal androgens may be essential for the maintenance of bone mass in postmenopausal women with Addison''s disease. In addition, these data indicate that the small amounts of androgens secreted by the adrenal cortex have a role in the maintenance of bone mass in normal postmenopausal women.  相似文献

A study on the bone system state in healthy volunteers has been performed before and after 105-day experiment in hermetically isolated environment (the Mars-105 experiment) using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). The values of bone mineral density (BMD), volumetric bone mineral density (VBMD), and bone structural characteristics of distal segments in radius and tibia have been evaluated. No significant DXA changes have been revealed in segments of skeleton critically important in terms of biomechanics. Microarchitectural deterioration (a decrease in the trabecula number and increase in the bone tissue heterogeneity) has been found using the pQCT technique in the radius of the majority of subjects. A VBMD decrease has been revealed for both cortical and trabecular bones in tibia, along with an unexpected trabecular bone improvement in the form of an increase in the trabecula quantity and decrease in bone tissue heterogeneity. Comprehensive studies, including estimation of projective and volumetric bone mineral densities (the bone mineral content) and bone structural characteristics (bone quality) are required to have a clear view on the changes in the bone system under the conditions of a simulation experiment.  相似文献

This cross-sectional study investigates metabolic bone disease and the relationship between age and bone mineral density (BMD) in males and females of a large, well-documented skeletal population of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), from the Caribbean Primate Research Center Museum collection from Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. The sample consists of 254 individuals aged 1.0-20+ years. The data consist of measurements of bone mineral content and bone mineral density, obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), of the last lumbar vertebra from each monkey. The pattern of BMD differs between male and female rhesus macaques. Females exhibit an initial increase in BMD with age, with peak bone density occurring around age 9.5 years, and remaining constant until 17.2 years, after which there is a steady decline in BMD. Males acquire bone mass at a faster rate, and attain a higher peak BMD at an earlier age than do females, at around 7 years of age, and BMD remains relatively constant between ages 7-18.5 years. After age 7 there is no apparent effect of age on BMD in the males of this sample; males older than 18.5 years were excluded due to the presence of vertebral osteophytosis, which interferes with DEXA. The combined frequency of osteopenia and osteoporosis in this population is 12.4%. BMD values of monkeys with vertebral wedge fractures are generally higher than those of virtually all of the nonfractured osteopenic/osteoporotic individuals, thus supporting the view that BMD as measured by DEXA is a useful but imperfect predictor of fracture risk, and that low BMD may not always precede fractures in vertebral bones. Other factors such as bone quality (i.e., trabecular connectivity) should also be considered. The skeletal integrity of a vertebra may be compromised by the loss of key trabeculae, resulting in structural failure, but the spine may still show a BMD value within normal limits, or within the range of osteopenia.  相似文献

In this cross-sectional study performed on 147 healthy or osteoporotic, but otherwise normal premenopausal (n = 26 and n = 13, respectively) or postmenopausal (n = 40 and n = 68, respectively) women aged 40.1+/-9.9 and 61.9+/-8.9 years, respectively (range 20-82 years), serum ovarian and adrenal sex steroids and their relationship to bone mineral density (BMD) were evaluated. The levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione (AD), and estradiol correlated positively with BMD at the hip and spine as did serum testosterone with BMD at the spine. An inverse relationship was found between sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels and BMD at the spine and hip. After adjustment for age, body mass, and sex steroid confounders, the bioavailable testosterone value (but not the DHEAS, DHEA, AD, or SHBG) values was demonstrated to be an independent determinant of BMD at the spine (beta 0.18, P<0.02) and hip (beta 0.24, P<0.02). Similarly, estradiol was found to be an independent determinant of BMD at the spine (beta 0.25, P<0.007). However, only SHBG levels (but not other steroid parameters) correlated positively with indices of bone remodeling, namely, serum osteocalcin and cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP). The present study suggests that a major decline in index of free testosterone (testosterone/SHBG) may influence the development of female osteoporosis. The clinical significance of circulating SHBG levels in the assessement of bone metabolic turnover remains to be established.  相似文献
