We report 26 cases of using leaves as tools with which wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Sonso community, Budongo Forest, Uganda, appeared to inspect objects removed during grooming. Careful removal of potential ectoparasites and delicate lip or manual placement on leaves followed by intense visual examination characterised this behaviour. It appears to be done to judge whether either ingestion or discarding is most appropriate, the former occurring in most cases. This behaviour may represent a third variant of ectoparasite handling, different from those described at Taï and Gombe, yet sharing features with the latter. These two East African techniques may thus have evolved from leaf grooming.  相似文献

All great apes build nightly a structure ("nest" or "bed") that is assumed to function primarily as a sleeping-platform. However, several other nest function hypotheses have been proposed: antipredation, antipathogen, and thermoregulation. I tested these simple shelter functions of chimpanzee nests in an experiment for which I was the subject in Fongoli, Senegal. I slept 11 nights in chimpanzee nests and on the bare ground to test for differences in sleep quality, potential exposure to disease through bites from possible vectors, and insulation. No difference was found in the total amount of sleep nor in sleep quality; however, sleep was more disturbed on the ground. Differences in sleep disturbance between arboreal and ground conditions seemed primarily due to causes of anxiety and alertness, e.g., vocalizations of terrestrial mammals. Arboreal nest-sleeping seems to reduce risk of bites from possible disease vectors and provide insulation in cold conditions. This preliminary, but direct, test of chimpanzee nest function has implications for the evolutionary transition from limb-roosting to nest-reclining sleep in the hominoids, and from tree-to-ground sleep in the genus Homo.  相似文献

Insects are a nutritious food source for many primates. In chimpanzees, insectivory is most prevalent among communities that manufacture tools to harvest social insects, particularly ants and termites. In contrast to other long-term study sites, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in Budongo Forest and Kibale National Park, Uganda, rarely eat insects and have small foraging tool kits, supporting speculation that infrequent insectivory—technically aided or otherwise—characterises chimpanzees in this part of Uganda’s Rift Valley. To expand the dataset for this region, insect foraging was investigated at Bulindi (25 km from Budongo) over 19 months during two studies in 2007–2008 and 2012–2013. Systematic faecal analysis demonstrated that insectivory is a habitual foraging activity at this site. Overall levels of insect consumption varied considerably across months but were not predicted by monthly changes in rainfall or fruit intake. Unlike their Budongo and Kibale counterparts, Bulindi chimpanzees often consume ants (principally weaver ants, Oecophylla longinoda) and use sticks to dig out stingless bee (Meliponini) ground nests. In other respects, however, insectivory at Bulindi conforms to the pattern observed elsewhere in this region: they do not manufacture ‘fishing’ or ‘dipping’ tools to harvest termites and aggressive or hard-to-access ants (e.g., army ants, Dorylus spp.), despite availability of suitable prey. The Bulindi data lend support to the supposition that chimpanzees in this part of the Rift Valley rarely exploit termites and Dorylus ants, apparently lacking the ‘cultural knowledge’ that would enable them to do so most efficiently (i.e., tool use). The study’s findings contribute to current debates about the relative influence of genetics, environment and culture in shaping regional and local variability in Pan foraging ecology.  相似文献

Interruption of chromosomal integrity by DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) causes a major threat to genomic stability. Despite tremendous progress in understanding the genetic and biochemical aspects of DSB-induced genome surveillance and repair mechanisms, little is known about organization of these molecular pathways in space and time. Here, we outline the key spatio-temporal problems associated with DSBs and focus on the imaging approaches to visualize the dynamics of DSB-induced responses in mammalian cells. We delineate benefits and limitations of these assays and highlight the key recent discoveries where live microscopy provided unprecedented insights into how cells defend themselves against genome-destabilizing effects of DNA damage.  相似文献

The electric fish, Eigenmannia, is able to discriminate the sign of the frequency difference, Df, between a neighbor's electric organ discharges (EODs) and its own. The fish lowers its EOD frequency for positive Dfs and raises its frequency for negative Dfs to minimize jamming of its electrolocation ability by a neighbor's EODs of similar frequency. This jamming avoidance response (JAR) is controlled by a group of 'sign-selective' neurons in the prepacemaker nucleus (PPN) that is located at the boundary of the midbrain and the diencephalon (Fig. 1). Extracellular recordings from a total of 35 neurons revealed a great similarity between behavioral and neuronal response properties: 1. All neurons fired vigorously for negative Dfs and were almost silent for positive Dfs, regardless of the orientation of the jamming stimulus, and thus discriminated the sign of Df unambiguously (Fig. 2). 2. In accordance with behavioral observations, individual neurons failed to discriminate the sign of Df when the jamming stimulus had the same field geometry as the signal mimicking the animal's own EOD (Fig. 3). 3. Df magnitudes which evoke strongest JARs, usually 4 to 8 Hz, also induced most vigorous responses in sign-selective neurons (Fig. 5). 4. Behavioral and neuronal thresholds for the detection of small jamming signals were similar. Threshold for sign selectivity was reached when the amplitude ratio of the jamming signal to the EOD mimic, measured near the head surface, was 0.001. This value corresponds to a maximal temporal disparity (a necessary cue for performing a correct JAR) of 1 to 2 microseconds for signals received by the two sides of the body in a transverse jamming field (Fig. 7). 5. The effects of two jamming fields, offered orthogonally to each other, may interact nonlinearly at the behavioral as well as at the neuronal level. A positive Df presented in one field may suppress behavioral and neuronal responses to modulations of the sign of Df in the other field (Fig. 8c).  相似文献

In light of a recent House of Commons Select Committee investigation into the regulation of human reproductive technologies, this article critically evaluates the Committee's case for a devolved, libertarian-inspired framework for the regulation of reproductive technologies. In assessing the appropriate balance between legislation, regulation and reproductive freedom, the Committee rightly challenged those who exhibit a myopic history of eugenics to justify restricting reproductive choice. However, by uncritically embracing the tropes of procreative liberty and genetic progress, and defining eugenics in terms of intention rather than consequence, the Committee appeared to ignore or marginalise a number of sociological challenges to the presumptions couched within the doctrine of ‘liberal choice’. This article suggests that failure to consider the cultural and political context within which new technologies are shaped and social needs constructed might undermine any ostensible virtues of a devolved system of governance for reproductive medicine.  相似文献

Host orientation by two nitidulid beetles was compared: Stelidota geminata (Say), which is very broad in its' host range, and Stelidota octomaculata (Say), a species whose feeding is restricted primarily to acorns. In a no-choice assay, both species responded to all food substrates offered and neither showed a significant preference among substrates (except banana versus wood fungi for S. octomaculata), or between aseptic and inoculated treatments; however, S. geminata readily displayed both phototactic flights and host-orienting flights, whereas S. octomaculata never exhibited phototactic flight and never responded to food odors by flying to the source. Furthermore, when upwind-walking response was compared, S. octomaculata walked to the source at a rate of 0.16±0.01 cm/s, which was significantly lower than that of S. geminata, with a rate of 0.54±0.02 cm/s. Turning frequency on the way to the source also differed between the two species, whereas distance traveled, number of pauses, and duration of pauses did not differ significantly. We submit that both species represent olfactory generalists, and that the restricted host range of S. octomaculata compared to S. geminata is not mediated by differences in long-range response to host odors, but rather is due to differences in other behaviors such as a reduced rate of locomotion, post-landing behavior, and possibly ecological factors.  相似文献

Some components of natural foods may enhance or inhibit prostaglandin formation and potentially affect the inflammation condition. A macrophage cell line, RAW264.7, was employed to examine the effects of foods traditionally regarded as heating or cooling on the production of PGE2, a well-known proinflammatory mediator. Foods traditionally regarded as heating (litchi, longan, and dried longan) or cooling (chrysanthemum flower, bitter gourd, and lotus seed plumule) were extracted sequentially with water and ethyl acetate. The water extracts (WE) and ethyl acetate extracts (EAE) were applied to RAW264.7 macrophages in the presence or absence of LPS (lipopolysaccharide). In the absence of LPS, the WEs from the heating foods, litchi, longan, or dried longan had a dose-dependent enhancing effect on PGE2 production, with respective EC50s of 8.4, 16, and 11 mg/ml. This effect was accompanied by significant induction of COX-2 protein expression, as shown by Western blot analysis. In contrast, LPS-induced PGE2 production was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by the WEs of the cooling foods, chrysanthemum flower, bitter gourd, and lotus seed plumule, with respective IC50s of 0.6, 0.13, and 0.08 mg/ml. At the concentrations tested, none of the EAEs had any effect on basal PGE2 production, while LPS-induced PGE2 production was inhibited or increased by the EAE from bitter gourd and longan, respectively. Water-soluble extracts of foods traditionally regarded as heating enhanced basal PGE2 production, while those from cooling foods significantly inhibited LPS-induced PGE2 production by the macrophage cell line. This subject merits further study to determine whether appropriate food selection may help patients suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the structural development of institution-based interest in genetics in Anglo-North American medicine after 1930 concomitantly with an analysis of the changes through which ideas about heredity and the hereditary transmission of diseases in families have passed. It maintains that the unfolding relationship between medicine and genetics can best be understood against the background of the shift in emphasis in conceptualisations of recurring patterns of disease in families from ‘biological relatedness’ to ‘related to chromosomes and genes’. The paper begins with brief considerations of the historical confluences of, first, heredity and medicine and, second, genetics and medicine which, in a third section, leads to a discussion about a uniquely ‘genetics-based approach’ to medicine in the second half of the twentieth century.  相似文献

Coral reefs globally are in decline, with some reefs undergoing phase shifts from coral-dominance to degraded states dominated by large fleshy macroalgae. These shifts have been underpinned by the overharvesting of herbivorous fishes and represent a fundamental change in the physical structure of these reefs. Although the physical structure provided by corals is regarded as a key feature that facilitates herbivore activity, the influence of the physical structure of macroalgal stands is largely unknown. Using transplanted Sargassum, the largest coral reef macroalga, we created habitat patches of predetermined macroalgal density (0.25-6.23 kg m(-2)). Remote video cameras revealed both grazing and browsing fishes avoided high density patches, preferring relatively open areas with low macroalgal cover. This behaviour may provide a positive feedback leading to the growth and persistence of macroalgal stands; increasing the stability of phase shifts to macroalgae.  相似文献

To aid prospective neural connectivity inference analysts and hoping to preclude misconception spread, we exploit the didatic value of some of the issues raised by Albo et al. (Biol Cybern 90: 318–326, 2004) who claim that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values can lead to mistakes in structural inference when using partial coherence in connection to Gersch’s 1970 method for spotting signal sources (Gersch in Math Biosci 14: 177– 196, 1972). We show theoretically that Gersch’s method is able only to spot which measurement of some common underlying factor has the least amount of additive noise and that this has nothing to do with any reasonable notion of ‘causality’ as suggested by Albo et al. (Biol Cybern 90: 318–326, 2004). We also show that despite the inherent structural ambiguity of the model used by Albo et al. (Biol Cybern 90: 318–326, 2004) to back their claim, its data can nonetheless furnish the correct time precedence hierarchy between the activities in its measured structures, both when simple (correlation) and more sophisticated methods are used (partial directed coherence) (Baccala and Sameshima in Biol Cybern 84:463–474, 2001a) in a true depiction of time series causality.  相似文献

Albumin Ortonovo is a slow moving variant of human serum albumin which has been found only in people coming from the small villages of Ortonovo and Nicola (Liguria, Italy) and reaches polymorphic frequency (≥1%) in the poorly admixed population group living in that area. This is the first report of a ‘private’ varint detected in a Caucasin population. It probably originated as a mutation in a founder individual many generations ago. Isoelectric focusing analysis of CNBr fragments from the purified variant localized the mutation in fragment CNBr (residues 447–548). This fragment was isolated on a preparative scale by reversed-phase HPLC and subjected to V8 proteinase digestion. Sequence analysis of the abnormal V8 peptide revealed that the variant arises from a previously unreported substitution at position 505 where glutamic acid has been replaced by lysine. The protein data were confirmed by DNA sequence analysis which indicated a single nucleotide change of GAAAAA in the corresponding codon of the structural gene. Since the amino acid substitution found in albumin Ortonovo accords with its electrophoretic mobility on cellulose acetate, residue 505 is probably exposed to the solvent. The clustering of the mutations in the intersubdomain connection linking subdomains IIIA and IIIB (residues 492–511) accords with the fact that this region lies on the molecular surface and is accessible to solvent.  相似文献
