The large bivalve, Panopea faujasi Ménard de la Groye, 1807 is locally abundant in shallow marine sandy facies in Late Pliocene sediments of Rhodes, where it occurs in life position within its burrow. Several Panopea‐trace fossils were sectioned in a vertical plane and others in series of horizontal sections, in order to study them in detail. Morphology of the structures produced by different individuals varied greatly, and even neighbors at the same horizon were unalike in detail. All show retrusive, upward shift in accordance with sedimentary accretion, but some also show protrusive movement as a response to erosive phases. As a response to sedimentation, the bivalve dug its way upwards by moving terrigenous grains and skeletal material from above it to below. In cross section the outline is slightly oval to circular. The longest example of these retrusive structures was preserved to a length of 86 cm and had a diameter of about 15 to 20 cm. As the bivalve has a long lifespan, and burrows deeply, the structures have good preservation potential and can reveal details of depositional history. The trace fossil is named Scalichnus phiale igen. et isp. nov.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal variations in microbial gene abundances were investigated to identify potential zones of methanotroph and methanogen biomass in a peat bog in Sarobetsu-genya wetland. The abundances of the bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA genes, pmoA, and mcrA were 107–109, 107–108, 104–106, and 104–107 copies g−1 dry peat, respectively. Correlation analysis based on microbial gene abundances and environmental factors showed that the spatiotemporal distributions of the abundances of the four microbial genes in peat layers were similar. The mcrA abundance showed a significant negative correlation with the dissolved organic carbon content and a significant positive correlation with the peat temperature. The pmoA abundance was not detectable during the spring thaw when the lowest peat temperature at a depth of 50 cm was recorded. At a depth of 200 cm, the peat temperature exceeded 6°C throughout the year, and the mcrA abundance exceeded 104 copies g−1 dry peat. These results indicate that the seasonal microbial activity related to methane should be evaluated in not only the shallow but also the deep peat layers in order to elucidate the methane dynamics in boreal wetlands.  相似文献

Microorganisms are known to play fundamental roles in the biogeochemical cycling of carbon in the coastal environments. To get to know the composition and ecological roles of the archaeal communities within the sediments of the Pearl River Estuary, Southern China, the diversity and vertical distribution of archaea in a sediment core was reported based on the 16S rRNA and mcrA genes for the first time. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed that archaea were present at 106–107 16S rRNA gene copies/g (wet weight) in the sediment core, and the proportion of mcrA versus 16S rRNA gene copies varied from 11 to 45%. 16S rRNA gene libraries were constructed and analyzed for the top layer (0–6 cm), middle layer (18–24 cm), sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ, 32–42 cm), and bottom layer (44–50 cm) sediments. The results indicated that Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotal Group (MCG) was the main component in the sediments. The MCG archaea could be further divided into six subgroups: MCG-A, B, C, D, E, and F. On the other hand, mcrA sequences from methanogens related to the order Methanomicrobiales and ANME-2 methanotrophs were detected in all sediment layers. Taken together, our data revealed a largely unknown archaeal community in which MCG dominated within the Pearl River estuarine sediments, while methanogens and methane-oxidizing archaea putatively involving in methane metabolism, were also found in the community. This is the first important step towards elucidating the biogeochemical roles of these archaea in the Pearl River Estuary.  相似文献

In a previous study, remediation of anthracene from soil was faster in the top 0–2 cm layer than in the lower soil layers. It was not clear whether this faster decrease was due to biotic or abiotic processes. Anthracene-contaminated soil columns were covered with black or transparent perforated polyethylene so that aeration occurred but that fluctuations in water content were minimal and light could reach (LIGHT treatment) or not reach the soil surface (DARK treatment), or left uncovered so that soil water content fluctuate and light reached the soil surface (OPEN treatment). The amount of anthracene, microbial biomass C, and microbial activity as reflected by the amount of CO2 produced within 3 days were determined in the 0–2 cm, 2–8 cm, and 8–15 cm layer after 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. In the 0–2 cm layer of the OPEN treatment, 17% anthracene remained, 48% in the LIGHT treatment and 61% in the DARK treatment after 28 days. In the 2–8 cm and 8–15 cm layer, treatment had no significant effect on the dissipation of anthracene from soil after 14 and 28 days. It was found that light and fluctuations in water content stimulated the removal of anthracene from the top 0–2 cm soil layer, but not from the lower soil layers. It can be speculated that covering contaminated soil or pilling it up will inhibit the dissipation of the contaminant.  相似文献

A vertically extensive (1.4 m) specimen of Conichnus in the Cretaceous Eutaw Formation (Alabama) exhibits marginal and internal fabrics that reflect equilibrium behavioral responses to changes in sedimentation rate and erosion events associated with tidal sandwave dynamics. Distinct fabrics can be linked to: (1) initial substrate penetration by the tracemaker, which followed stoss-side erosion of sandwave foresets; (2) gradual retrusive movement in response to slow sediment aggradation (<1 cm/day) in sandwave bottomsets; (3) intermediate to high rates of retrusive migration in response to moderate to rapid sediment aggradation (~1 cm/day) in sandwave toes; (4) tracemaker escape associated with extremely rapid (>5 cm/day) foreset deposition; and (5) protrusive equilibrium movement in response to stoss-side erosion of foresets. Morphological observations in the context of tidal cyclicity suggest that the trace, presumably produced by an anemone, was a semipermanent domicile occupied for at least two to three months. Relationships established between burrow fabric and sedimentary conditions in the Eutaw specimen may aid in the interpretation of conichnian burrows in other high-energy, shallow marine sequences.  相似文献

Morphological changes in the decomposing litter ofAbies spp. andBetula spp. in a mor humus form were studied by a rapid thin section method. According to the morphological characteristics, the epidermis, mesophyll and vascular bundleof Abies needle litter were classified into four types: (i) newly fallen; (ii) slightly decomposed; (iii) moderately decomposed; and (iv) greatly decomposed. The distribution of these tissue types along the profile of the forest floor was then investigated. The morphological changes in other litter types, such as branches, scales andBetula leaves during decomposition were observed directly with microscope and electron microscope. Five vertical thin sections and 80 horizontal thin sections were used for these observations and investigations. the decomposition ofAbies litter was slower than that ofBetula litter. The relative decomposition rate of the tissues was in the order of: mesophyll>vascular bundle >epidermis inAbies needles; mesophyll≥epidermis>vascular bundles inBetula leaves; and inner bark >xylem>outer bark in bothAbies andBetula branches. The last remains of the litter were usually stomata, segments of seminiferous scale and outer bark ofAbies. The decomposition of plant litter occurred mainly within the L and F layers of the soil (0–5 cm in depth).Abies needles andBetula leaves completely disappeared at depths of 0–6 cm and 0–4 cm, respectively. Branches disappeared within the top of 5 cm and 6–8 cm forBetula and forAbies, respectively. The scales ofAbies were most slowly decomposed in the soil layers.  相似文献

Six samples containing extremely high concentration of Pb, Zn, and Cd were obtained from the layers of 5–10 cm and 25–30 cm three tailing piles, with ages of about 10, 20 and more than 80 years, respectively. Then, 48 bacterial strains were obtained from these samples, and subsequently their phylogenetic positions were determined by analysis on the partial sequence of 16S rRNA gene (fragment length ranging from 474 to 708 bp). These isolates were members of the Arthrobacter genus, phylogenetically close to A. keyseri and A. ureafaciens, with sequence ranging from 99.1% to 100%. Furthermore, genetic variation between subpopulations from different samples was revealed by analysis on their randomly amplified polymorphic DNA profile. Nei genetic distance showed that the greatest differentiation occurred between subpopulation A and C. Notably, either genetic distance between subpopulations from the layers of 5–10 cm and 25–30 cm of each tailing pile or between same layers of different tailing pile increased with the history of tailings. Moreover, correlation analysis showed that soluble Pb has a significantly negative relationship with Nei’ gene diversity of subpopulation. It was assumed that soluble Pb may be responsible for the reduced genetic diversity of the Arthrobacter population. Our data provided evidence that genetic differentiation of microbial populations was consistent with the changes of environmental factors, particularly heavy metals. The influence of predator exposure on the survival of hatchery red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus was investigated under laboratory conditions. Several prey-capture (attack distance, mean attack velocity, capture time, and gape cycle duration) and anti-predator (reaction distance, response distance, mean velocity, and maximum velocity) performance variables were quantified using high-speed video for juvenile red drum (25–30 mm standard length, L S ) reared with and without predators (pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides). Univariate contrasts of prey-capture events demonstrated that attack distance (mean ± s.e.) was significantly greater in red drum reared with (1.20 ± 0.16 mm) versus without (0.65 ± 0.09 mm) pinfish predators. During anti-predator events, red drum reared with predators had approximately 300% greater reaction distance and 20%–30% greater response distance, mean velocity and maximum velocity versus fish reared without predators; however, these differences were not statistically significant. Following video assessments, a series of mortality experiments were conducted using free-ranging pinfish predators. Mortality rates (Z) ranged from 0.047 to 0.060 (Z/hr/predator) and did not differ significantly among treatments.  相似文献

The smalltooth sandtiger shark, Odontaspis ferox, has a cosmopolitan distribution across warm temperate and tropical waters, and although essentially demersal, it has also been captured pelagically in mid-ocean. The species often occurs inshore at steeply shelving coastal and insular locations, and has now been identified by divers at eight widely separated shallow water sites. In the Southern Hemisphere, most O. ferox were caught by trawl on the continental slope, where its bathic range was extended to at least 880 m. Large specimens (>200 cm TL) were found across the whole depth range, but almost all juveniles were caught between 200 and 600 m. The largest recorded male was 344 cm TL, and female 450 cm TL. The few biological data suggest that size at maturity for males is around 200–250 cm TL, and for females 300–350 cm. No pregnant females were recorded but size at birth is probably about 100 cm TL. Nowhere has the species been found in large numbers. Survey and commercial catch data from south-east Australian trawl grounds suggest that numbers of O. ferox there have declined since the advent of deepwater commercial trawling in the 1970s. In areas of steep untrawlable terrain, increased gill-netting and longlining are likely to impact on local populations, with mature individuals being particularly vulnerable. Although O. ferox is not specifically targeted by commercial fishing activities, its likely very low fecundity make it susceptible to local extirpation, even at seemingly small capture rates. This species is protected off New South Wales and is considered “vulnerable” globally, by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

The algal, protozoan and metazoan communities within different drift-ice types (newly formed, pancake and rafted ice) and in under-ice water were studied in the Gulf of Bothnia in March 2006. In ice, diatoms together with unidentified flagellates dominated the algal biomass (226 ± 154 μg ww l−1) and rotifers the metazoan and protozoan biomass (32 ± 25 μg ww l−1). The under-ice water communities were dominated by flagellates and ciliates, which resulted in lower biomasses (97 ± 25 and 21 ± 14 μg ww l−1, respectively). The under-ice water and newly formed ice separated from all other samples to their own cluster in hierarchical cluster analysis. The most important discriminating factors, according to discriminant analysis, were chlorophyll-a, phosphate and silicate. The under-ice water/newly formed ice cluster was characterized by high nutrient and low chlorophyll-a values, while the opposite held true for the ice cluster. Increasing trends in chlorophyll-a concentration and biomass were observed with increasing ice thickness. Within the thick ice columns (>40 cm), the highest chlorophyll-a concentrations (6.6–22.2 μg l−1) were in the bottom layers indicating photoacclimation of the sympagic community. The ice algal biomass showed additional peaks in the centric diatom-dominated surface layers coinciding with the highest photosynthetic efficiencies [0.019–0.032 μg C (μg Chl-a −1 h−1) (μE m−2 s−1)−1] and maximum photosynthetic capacities [0.43-1.29 μg C (μg Chl-a −1 h−1)]. Rafting and snow-ice formation, determined from thin sections and stable oxygen isotopic composition, strongly influenced the physical, chemical and biological properties of the ice. Snow-ice formation provided the surface layers with nutrients and possibly habitable space, which seemed to have favored centric diatoms in our study.  相似文献

Sediments from Xuanwu Lake have been dredged in the past 3 years to improve the water quality, but methanogenesis should still exist in the newly settled sediment. Methane production, methanogens, and physiochemical parameters were detected in the surface sediments (0–5 cm) and/or vertical sediments (0–21 cm, segmented at interval of 3 cm). Methane flux at water–air interface varied among five detected sites. Principal component analysis showed that CH4 flux, content of water and the concentration of total nitrogen (TN), CH4 and organic matters (OM) weighed most heavily on the component I in surface sediments while different patterns were observed for vertical sediments. The copy number of the 16S rRNA gene for bacteria was lower in the surface sediment (0–6 cm) than that in deeper sediments (12–21 cm), while 16S rRNA genes of Archaea were almost evenly distributed in the vertical sediments. Representatives belonging to the orders Methanobacteriales, Methanomicrobiales, and Methanosarcinales were detected in all samples of the vertical sediments, except that no members of the Methanococcales were detected in the samples at 0–6 cm. The level of Methanobacteriales reached a highest density at 18.1 × 104 copies g−1 dry weight (dw) at 6–9 cm; for Methanosarcinales (76.89 × 106 copies g−1 dw) and Methanococcales (82.70 × 103 copies g−1 dw) at 12–15 cm, whereas for Methanomicrobiales (43.37 × 106 copies g−1 dw) at 9–12 cm. Methanosarcinaceae and Methanosaetaceae reached to their highest densities at 6–9 and 9–12 cm, respectively. These data provided useful information for better understanding the methanogenesis in the newly settled sediments of a recently dredged lake.  相似文献

Nocturnal increases in water potential (ψ) and water content (θ) in the upper soil profile are often attributed to root water efflux, a process termed hydraulic redistribution (HR). However, unsaturated liquid or vapor flux of water between soil layers independent of roots also contributes to the daily recovery in θ (Δθ), confounding efforts to determine the actual magnitude of HR. We estimated liquid (J l) and vapor (J v) soil water fluxes and their impacts on quantifying HR in a seasonally dry ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest by applying existing datasets of ψ, θ and temperature (T) to soil water transport equations. As soil drying progressed, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity declined rapidly such that J l was irrelevant (<2E−05 mm h−1 at 0–60 cm depths) to total water flux by early August. Vapor flux was estimated to be the highest in upper soil (0–15 cm), driven by large T fluctuations, and confounded the role of HR, if any, in nocturnal θ dynamics. Within the 15–35 cm layer, J v contributed up to 40% of hourly increases in nocturnal soil moisture. While both HR and net soil water flux between adjacent layers contribute to θ in the 15–65 cm soil layer, HR was the dominant process and accounted for at least 80% of the daily recovery in θ. The absolute magnitude of HR is not easily quantified, yet total diurnal fluctuations in upper soil water content can be quantified and modeled, and remain highly applicable for establishing the magnitude and temporal dynamics of total ecosystem water flux.  相似文献

Larval behaviour is important to dispersal and settlement, but is seldom quantified. Behavioural capabilities of larval Lutjanus carponotatus in both offshore pelagic and reef environments at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef were observed in situ to determine if they were sufficient to influence dispersal. Offshore, larvae swam with higher directional precision and faster on the windward side of the island (28 cm.s−1) than on the leeward side (16 cm s−1). Most larvae swam directionally. Mean swimming directions were southerly in the windward area and northerly in the leeward area. Larvae avoided the surface and remained mostly between 3–15 m. Larvae released near reefs were 2–3 times faster swimming away from reefs (19 cm s−1) than swimming toward or over them (6–8 cm s−1). Speed swimming away was similar to that offshore. Of 41 larvae released near reefs, 73% reached the reef, 59% settled, and 13% of those reaching the reef were eaten. Larvae settled onto hard and soft coral (58%), topographic reef features (29%) and sand and rubble (13%). Settlement depth averaged 5.5 m (2–8 m). Before settling larvae spent up to 800 s over the reef (mean 231 s) and swam up to 53 m (mean 14 m). About half of the larvae interacted with reef residents including predatory attacks and aggressive approaches by residents and aggressive approaches by settling larvae. Settlement behaviour of L. carponotatus was more similar to a serranid than to pomacentrids. Settlement-stage larvae of L. carponotatus are behaviourally capable, and have a complex settlement behaviour.  相似文献

Identifying the maternal origin of dispersed seeds is a challenging task because it is impossible to directly track seed movement once an animal has ingested them. However, recent development of molecular techniques allows us to identify the maternal origin of dispersed seeds in natural plant populations. Here we analyzed the maternal origin of Myrica rubra seeds found in the feces of Yakushima macaques. We detected a high level of diversity among the dispersed seeds, with an average of 3.0 maternal origins (range 1–9) in each feces. The average dispersal distance was 270.0 m (range 20.4–634.0 m) and the average of distance between maternal trees of dispersed seeds in the same feces was 161.5 m (range 0–573.9 m). These results suggest that seed dispersal by macaques plays an important role in maintaining the genetic diversity of Myrica rubra populations.  相似文献

Area of bamboo forest (Phyllostachys praecox) has rapidly increased in southern China during the last 20 years due to its high economic value. Aims of this study were to analyse the temporal and spatial variations of soil organic matter (SOM) in heavily winter mulched bamboo stands and to estimate potential for carbon sequestration. Total of 60 soil profiles with 0–15 years of bamboo plantation were sampled from three towns in Lin’an County. Results showed that with increased plantation years, SOM decreased slightly at the beginning (1–5 years), and then rose up steadily. Based on the average of the three locations, the highest SOM content of 75.82 g/kg was the surface layer (0–10 cm) of the 15 years. As plantation year increased, the variation of SOM in the surface layer (0–10 cm) was represented by a parabolic shape, and in the second layer (10–20 cm), it was a similar mode, but less vigorous. Soil organic carbon (SOC) storage significantly increased during 5 to 15 years after it reached full production, and the calculated annual SOC increment in 0–40 cm soil profile was about 6.3 t C/ha/year. Therefore, extended Phyllostachys praecox forests can be considered as one option for countering CO2 emissions and regional climate change.  相似文献

Didymopanax pittieri is a common shade-intolerant tree colonizing treefall gaps in the elfin forests on windswept ridgecrests in the lower montane rain forests of the Cordillera de Tilarán, Costa Rica. All D. pittieri taller than >0.5 m in a 5.2-ha elfin forested portion of a gridded study watershed in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve were located, mapped, and measured. This local population of D. pittieri is spatially inhomogeneous, in that density increases with increasing wind exposure; D. pittieri are more abundant near ridge crests than lower on windward slopes. The important and ubiquitous phenomenon of spatial inhomogeneity in population density is addressed and corrected for in spatial analyses by the application of the inhomogeneous version of Ripley’s K. The spatial patterns of four size classes of D. pittieri (<5 cm dbh, 5–10 cm dbh, 10–20 cm dbh, and >20 cm dbh) were investigated. Within the large-scale trend in density driven by wind exposure, D. pittieri saplings are clumped at the scale of treefall gaps and at the scale of patches of aggregated gaps. D. pittieri 5–10 cm dbh are randomly distributed, apparently due to competitive thinning of sapling clumps during the early stages of gap-phase regeneration. D. pittieri larger than 10 cm dbh are overdispersed at a scale larger than that of patches of gaps. Natural disturbance can influence the distribution of shade intolerant tree populations at several different spatial scales, and can have discordant effects at different life history stages.  相似文献

Age and growth of ocellated icefish, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, were investigated using counts of annual growth increments from sagittal otoliths. Samples were collected during research surveys by benthic trawl carried out around Elephant and South Shetland Islands in January–February 2002 and December 2006–January 2007. A total of 290 specimens were selected for the study, consisting of 120 females and 170 males. The age of fish was estimated by counting annuli on transverse sections obtained by grinding and polishing whole otoliths embedded in epoxy resin. The precision-of-age estimates within and between readers were tested applying both the average percent error (APE) and the coefficient of variation (CV). The estimated age-range was 1–12 for both sexes of C. rastrospinosus. Applying the von Bertalanffy growth function to the age–length data, a growth curve was obtained for each sex. The estimated values of VB growth parameters L and k were, respectively, 47.9 cm and 0.28 for females and 42.9 cm and 0.36 for males. Compared to other congeneric species, the growth performance of C. rastrospinosus was relatively high, being 2.82 and 2.81 in males and females, respectively. Age at sexual maturity was estimated to be about 4 years in both sexes. C. rastrospinosus captured in the studied area consisted mainly of adult specimens between 3 and 8 years, with few older fish.  相似文献

Glyptothorax dikrongensis, a new species of sisorid catfish from the Dikrong River in northeastern India, is described. Glyptothorax dikrongensis can be differentiated from all congeners, except G. indicus, G. rugimentum and G. obliquimaculatus, by the presence of an unculiferous patch on the posterior region of the lower lip, in between the inner mandibular-barbel bases, and unculiferous striae of the thoracic adhesive apparatus extending anteriorly onto the gular region. Glyptothorax dikrongensis is distinguished from G. indicus by the following combination of characters: equal distance between the posterior end of the pectoral-fin base and the pelvic-fin origin and between the pelvic-fin and the anal-fin origin (vs. distance between posterior end of pectoral-fin base and pelvic-fin origin greater than between pelvic-fin origin and anal-fin origin), and the pelvic-fin origin anterior to or almost at a vertical through the posterior end of the dorsal-fin base (vs. posterior to the dorsal-fin base). Glyptothorax dikrongensis is distinguished from G. rugimentum in lacking vertical bars on the body and caudal peduncle, and having a deeper caudal peduncle (8.4–9.2 vs. 6.1–7.6% SL) and a shorter dorsal-fin spine (10.1–11.1 vs. 15.2–18.6% SL). It is distinguished from G. obliquimaculatus in lacking dark, oblique blotches on the body, and in having a shorter dorsal-fin spine (10.1–11.1 vs. 13.4–16.4% SL).  相似文献

The profound ecological change of the marine benthos that eventually led to the almost complete destruction of the Precambrian matgrounds by benthic grazers and bioturbators (the agronomic revolution) was largely completed in the Tommotian. At that time, burrows produced by bottom‐dwelling animals as shelters against predators were supplemented by burrowing for food by predators and sediment feeders. The limy mud ichnofauna of that age in Siberia was very different from the roughly coeval sand bottom faunas of Baltica. Although the exact zoological identity of the animals forming the infaunal Tommotian traces remains unknown, they probably mostly represent various kinds of early nemathelminthes. No apparent locomotion traces of mollusc origin have been encountered in the Early Cambrian, despite the abundant occurrence of skeletal fossils attributed to molluscs. Possibly the standard muscular foot, typical of modern molluscs, had not yet developed. Ichnotaxa represented are Teichichnus isp., Rhizocorallium isp., Chondrites isp., possibly the Buren ichnocomplex and others.  相似文献
