Ventilatory responsiveness to hypoxia (HVR) has been reported to be different between highly trained endurance athletes and healthy sedentary controls. However, a linkage between aerobic capacity and HVR has not been a universal finding. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between HVR and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) in healthy men with a wide range of aerobic capacities. Subjects performed a HVR test followed by an incremental cycle test to exhaustion. Participants were classified according to their maximal aerobic capacity. Those with a VO2 max of >or=60 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) were considered highly trained (n = 13); those with a VO2 max of 50-60 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) were considered moderately-trained (n = 18); and those with a VO2 max of <50 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) were considered untrained (n = 24). No statistical differences were detected between the three groups for HVR (P > 0.05), and the HVR values were variable within each group (range: untrained = 0.28-1.61, moderately trained = 0.23-2.39, and highly trained = 0.08-1.73 l x min.%arterial O2 saturation(-1)). The relationship between HVR and VO2 max was not statistically significant (r = -0.1723; P > 0.05). HVR was also unrelated to maximal minute ventilation and ventilatory equivalents for O2 and CO2. We found that a spectrum of hypoxic ventilatory control is present in well-trained endurance athletes and moderately and untrained men. We interpret these observations to mean that other factors are more important in determining hypoxic ventilatory control than physical conditioning per se.  相似文献

Six essentially hypertensive men (average resting arterial pressure of 150/97 mm Hg) and eight normotensive controls (average resting arterial pressure of 115/73 mm Hg) were tested during 1 h of dynamic leg exercise in a warm environment. The groups were well matched for age, VO2 max, body surface area, weight, and body fat. Environmental conditions were 38 degrees C dry-bulb, 28 degrees C wet-bulb; exercise intensity was approximately 40% VO2 max (85-90 W). There were no significant intergroup differences in core or mean skin temperatures, calculated heat exchange variables, heart, or sweat rates. Blood pressure differences between the groups were maintained (P less than 0.01). The hypertensive group responded with a significantly lower stroke index (P less than 0.01) and cardiac index (P less than 0.01), and a decreased slope of the rise in forearm blood flow (P less than 0.01) due to an higher vascular resistance (P less than 0.01). The combined heat load (M + R + C) presented was not sufficient to override the hypertensives' higher cutaneous vasoconstrictor tone. However, on a practical basis, the hypertensives were able to tolerate exercise in the heat as well as their normotensive counterparts.  相似文献

The maximal aerobic power of six highly trained young cyclist, mean age 16.3 years and mean VO2max 4.9 l/min, was directly measured at intervals of 4 hrs. A Latin square design was used for the test order. At submaximal work of O2-consumption 2.4 to 4.4 l/min no circadian variation of any single function was found. However, at maximal work load the differences between the maxima and minima values were 12.4% for maximal work output (W max), 7.8% for expiratory minute volume (V Emax), 5.7% for maximal aerobic power (VO2max) and 3.4% for maximal heart rate (H Rmax). All the functions--with the exception of VO2max-had their minima at 0300 hrs; the minima of VO2max was reached already at 2300 hours. The maxima-values of V Emax and VO2max were measured at 1500 hrs, of W max and H Rmax at 0700 and of H Rrest at 1900 hrs correspondingly. A one-tailed test showed significant differences between the maxima and minima values of all variables (P less than 0.05). The results suggest a decreased cardiopulmonary working capacity at night. However, this impairment is only of practical importance if the work will be done near the limit of endurance capacity. Besides it will suggest, that the indirect methods for assessing the cardiopulmonary capacity based on VO2max and W170 are not useful at nighttime, because the presuppositions for these methods are limited of the time of day.  相似文献

Serum iron deficiency has a high incidence in female athletes. We investigated the effects of a daily oral iron supplement, (160 mg) administered during an intensive 7-week physical training programme, on body iron status, and the maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) of 13 women (group A) compared to 15 who took a placebo (group B). The subjects were 19 years old. Blood samples were obtained before training began and on days 1, 7, 21 and 42 of training. They were analysed for packed cell volume (PVC) and for haemoglobin (Hb), 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), haptoglobin, iron and ferritin concentrations. The VO2max was measured on days 0, 21 and 42 of training. Following 21 days of training Hb, PCV and ferritin were significantly higher (P less than or equal to 0.01) in group A compared to group B. Over the training period Hb rose by 9.3% and 2.4% in groups A and B, respectively. At the end of training 66% of group B exhibited ferritin concentrations below 10 ng.ml-1, while none of group A had such low values. Mean VO2max of group A had increased by 7.5% following 21 days of training (P less than or equal to 0.01) and by 15.3% after 42 days. No appreciable increase in VO2max had occurred in group B by day 21 (significantly lower than VO2max of group A; P less than or equal to 0.05), however by day 42 it had increased by 14.3% (P less than or equal to 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Determinants of endurance in well-trained cyclists   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Fourteen competitive cyclists who possessed a similar maximum O2 consumption (VO2 max; range, 4.6-5.0 l/min) were compared regarding blood lactate responses, glycogen usage, and endurance during submaximal exercise. Seven subjects reached their blood lactate threshold (LT) during exercise of a relatively low intensity (group L) (i.e., 65.8 +/- 1.7% VO2 max), whereas exercise of a relatively high intensity was required to elicit LT in the other seven men (group H) (i.e., 81.5 +/- 1.8% VO2 max; P less than 0.001). Time to fatigue during exercise at 88% of VO2 max was more than twofold longer in group H compared with group L (60.8 +/- 3.1 vs. 29.1 +/- 5.0 min; P less than 0.001). Over 92% of the variance in performance was related to the % VO2 max at LT and muscle capillary density. The vastus lateralis muscle of group L was stressed more than that of group H during submaximal cycling (i.e., 79% VO2 max), as reflected by more than a twofold greater (P less than 0.001) rate of glycogen utilization and blood lactate concentration. The quality of the vastus lateralis in groups H and L was similar regarding mitochondrial enzyme activity, whereas group H possessed a greater percentage of type I muscle fibers (66.7 +/- 5.2 vs. 46.9 +/- 3.8; P less than 0.01). The differing metabolic responses to submaximal exercise observed between the two groups appeared to be specific to the leg extension phase of cycling, since the blood lactate responses of the two groups were comparable during uphill running. These data indicate that endurance can vary greatly among individuals with an equal VO2 max.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Previously, a strong relationship has been found between whole body maximal aerobic power (VO(2 max)) and peak vascular conductance in the calf muscle (J. L. Reading, J. M. Goodman, M. J. Plyley, J. S. Floras, P. P. Liu, P. R. McLaughlin, and R. J. Shephard. J. Appl. Physiol. 74: 567-573, 1993; P. G. Snell, W. H. Martin, J. C. Buckley, and C. G. Blomqvist. J. Appl. Physiol. 62: 606-610, 1987), suggesting a matching between maximal exercise capacity and peripheral vasodilatory reserve across a broad range of aerobic power. In contrast, long-term training could alter this relationship because of the unique demands for muscle blood flow and cardiac output imposed by different types of training. In particular, the high local blood flows but relatively low cardiac output demand imposed by the type of resistance training used by bodybuilders may cause a relatively greater development in peripheral vascular reserve than in aerobic power. To examine this possibility, we studied the relationship between treadmill VO(2 max) and vascular conductance in the calf by using strain-gauge plethysmography after maximal ischemic plantar flexion exercise in 8 healthy sedentary subjects (HS) and 28 athletes. The athletes were further divided into three groups: 10 elite middle-distance runners (ER), 11 power athletes (PA), and 7 bodybuilders (BB). We found that both BB and ER deviate from the previously demonstrated relationship between VO(2 max) and vascular conductance. Specifically, for a given vascular conductance, BB had a lower VO(2 max), whereas ER had a higher VO(2 max) than did HS and PA. We conclude that the relationship between peak vascular conductance and aerobic power is altered in BB and ER because of training-specific effects on central vs. peripheral cardiovascular adaptation to local skeletal muscle metabolic demand.  相似文献

Forty-eight sedentary and 39 quite active or well-trained men participated in this study. Muscle biopsy samples were taken from the vastus lateralis for the determination of fiber type composition (I, IIa, IIb), fiber type area, and assay of the following enzymes: malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (HADH) and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (OGDH). Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was determined with a progressive cycle ergometer test, while endurance performance or maximal aerobic capacity (MAC) was defined as the total work output during a 90-min cycle ergometer test. Correlation analysis revealed no evidence of association between fiber type composition and VO2max kg-1 or MAC kg-1 in sedentary subjects, while active men exhibited significant correlation between % type I (r = 0.52), % type IIb (r = 0.31) and VO2max kg-1. Enzyme activities were not significantly correlated with MAC kg-1 and VO2max kg-1 in sedentary men while active men exhibited significant correlation for the three enzymes (0.37 less than or equal to r less than or equal to 0.51) with VO2max kg-1. These results show that the contribution of muscle fiber type and enzyme activities to aerobic performance may be inflated from a statistical point of view by the training status heterogeneity of subjects. They also suggest that variation in these muscle characteristics does not account for the individual differences in aerobic performance of subjects who have never trained before. Therefore, the assessment of muscle characteristics is not as useful as originally thought for the detection of individuals with a high potential for endurance performance among untrained subjects.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare time spent at a high percentage of VO2max (>90% of VO2max) (ts90%), time to achieve 90% of VO2max (ta90%), and time to exhaustion (TTE) for exercise in the severe intensity domain in children and adults. Fifteen prepubertal boys (10.3 ± 0.9 years) and 15 men (23.5 ± 3.6 years) performed a maximal graded exercise to determine VO2max, maximal aerobic power (MAP) and power at ventilatory threshold (PVTh). Then, they performed 4 constant load exercises in a random order at PVTh plus 50 and 75% of the difference between MAP and PVTh (PΔ50 and PΔ75) and 100 and 110% of MAP (P100 and P110). VO2max was continuously monitored. The P110 test was used to determine maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD). No significant difference was found in ta90% between children and adults. ts90% and TTE were not significantly different between children and adults for the exercises at PΔ50 and PΔ75. However, ts90% and TTE during P100 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively) and P110 (p < 0.001) exercises were significantly shorter in children. Children had a significantly lower MAOD than adults (34.3 ± 9.4 ml · kg vs. 53.6 ± 11.1 ml · kg). A positive relationship (p < 0.05) was obtained between MAOD and TTE values during the P100 test in children. This study showed that only for intensities at, or higher than MAP, lower ts90% in children was linked to a reduced TTE, compared to adults. Shorter TTE in children can partly be explained by a lower anaerobic capacity (MAOD). These results give precious information about exercise intensity ranges that could be used in children's training sessions. Moreover, they highlight the implication of both aerobic and anaerobic processes in endurance performances in both populations.  相似文献

Thirteen male volunteers performed cycle ergometer maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max tests) in moderate (21 degrees C, 30% rh) and hot (49 degrees C, 20% rh) environments, before and after a 9-day heat acclimation program. This program resulted in significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) final heart rate (24 bt X min-1) and rectal temperature (0.4 degrees C) from the first to last day of acclimation. The VO2max was lower (P less than 0.01) in the hot environment relative to the moderate environment both before (8%) and after (7%) acclimation with no significant difference (P greater than 0.05) shown for maximal power output (PO max, watts) between environments either before or after acclimation. The VO2max was higher (P less than 0.01) by 4% after acclimation in both environments. Also, PO max was higher (P less than 0.05) after acclimation in both the moderate (4%) and hot (2%) environments. The reduction in VO2max in the hot compared to moderate environment was not related to the difference in core temperature at VO2max between moderate and hot trials, nor was it strongly related with aerobic fitness level. These findings indicate that heat stress, per se, reduced the VO2max. Further, the reduction in VO2max due to heat was not affect be state of heat acclimation, the degree of elevation in core temperature, or level of aerobic fitness.  相似文献

Based on cross-sectional data, we recently reported that, in contrast to the prevailing view, the rate of decline in maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2 max)) with age is greater in physically active compared with sedentary healthy women. We tested this hypothesis in men using a meta-analytic study of VO(2 max) values in the published literature. A total of 242 studies (538 subject groups and 13,828 subjects) met the inclusion criteria and were arbitrarily separated into sedentary (214 groups, 6,231 subjects), active (159 groups, 5,621 subjects), and endurance-trained (165 groups, 1,976 subjects) populations. Body fat percent increased with age in sedentary and active men (P < 0.001), whereas no change was observed in endurance-trained men. VO(2 max) was inversely and strongly related to age within each population (r = -0.80 to -0.88, all P < 0. 001) and was highest in endurance-trained and lowest in sedentary populations at any age. Absolute rates of decline in VO(2 max) with age were not different (P > 0.05) in sedentary (-4.0 ml. kg(-1). min(-1). decade(-1)), active (-4.0), and endurance-trained (-4.6) populations. Similarly, there were no group differences (P > 0.05) in the relative (%) rates of decline in VO(2 max) with advancing age (-8.7, -7.3, and -6.8%/decade, respectively). Maximal heart rate was inversely related to age within each population (r = -0.88 to -0.93, all P < 0.001), but the rate of age-related reduction was not different among the populations. There was a significant decline in running mileage and speed with advancing age in the endurance-trained men. The present cross-sectional meta-analytic findings do not support the hypothesis that the rate of decline in VO(2 max) with age is related to habitual aerobic exercise status in men.  相似文献

The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) of 228 men and 47 women from the Indian agricultural community was measured. The VO2 max in 20-24-year-old men was about 17% less than in the 25-29-year-old group. With advancing age, the VO2 declined gradually to the ages 55-59, excepting the 36-39-year-old group. The loss in VO2 max was 0.65 ml/kg.min per year between 25 and 39 years of age and 0.16 ml/kg.min per year between 40 and 59 years of age. However, 30-39-year-old women had 7% higher VO2 max than the 20-29-year-old age group; and the difference in VO2 max between the group 30-39 and the group 40-49 years of age was 32%. The 20-29-and 40-49-year-old women had VO2 max 24 and 30% less than those of men in the same age range.  相似文献

Aerobic performance of female marathon and male ultramarathon athletes.   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The aerobic performance of thirteen male ultramarathon and nine female marathon runners were studied in the laboratory and their results were related to their times in events ranging in distance from 5 km to 84.64 km. The mean maximal aerobic power output (VO2 max) of the men was 72.5 ml/kg . min compared with 58.2 ml/kg . min (p less than 0.001) in the women but the O2 cost (VO2) for a given speed or distance of running was the same in both sexes. The 5 km time of the male athletes was closely related to their VO2 max (r = -0.85) during uphill running but was independent of relative power output (%VO2 max). However, with increasing distance the association of VO2 max with male athletic performance diminished (but nevertheless remained significant even at 84.64 km), and the relationship between %VO2 max and time increased. Thus, using multiple regression analysis of the form: 42.2 km (marathon) time (h) = 7.445 - 0.0338 VO2 max (ml/kg . min) - 0.0303% VO2 max (r = 0.993) and 84.64 km (London-Brighton) time (h) = 16.998 - 0.0735 VO2 max (ml/kg . min) - 0.0844% VO2 max (r = 0.996) approximately 98% of the total variance of performance times could be accounted for in the marathon and ultramarathon events. This suggests that other factors such as footwear, clothing, and running technique (Costill, 1972) play a relatively minor role in this group of male distance runners. In the female athletes the intermediate times were not available and they did not compete beyond 42.2 km (marathon) distance but for this event a similar association though less in magnitude was found with VO2 max (r = -0.43) and %VO2 max (= -0.49). The male athletes were able to sustain 82% VO2 max (range 80--87%) in 42.2 km and 67% VO2 max (range 53--76%) in 84.64 km event. The comparable figure for the firls in the marathon was 79% VO2 max (ranges 68--86%). Our data suggests that success at the marathon and ultramarathon distances is crucially and (possibly) solely dependent on the development and utilisation of a large VO2 max.  相似文献

Familial resemblance in maximal heart rate, blood lactate and aerobic power   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are considerable interindividual differences in maximal oxygen uptake per kilogram of body weight (VO2 max/kg), maximal heart rate (max HR) and maximal blood lactate (max blood La) measured during a progressive exercise test. The aim of the study was to quantify the familial relationships for these variables. Parents and children of 38 families of French-Canadian descent were submitted to a modified Balke treadmill test. VO2 max/kg and max HR were the highest values reached during the test for 1 min. Max blood La was obtained from a blood sample taken 2 min after the test. The effects of age and sex were significant for max blood La and VO2 max/kg in each generation. Scores were thus adjusted through multiple regression procedures (age + sex + age X sex + age2), yielding residuals which were submitted to further analysis. Intraclass correlations (ri) were significant in pairs of sibs for max blood La and max HR, i.e. 0.28 (p less than 0.01) and 0.43 (p less than 0.05), respectively. For VO2 max/kg, pairs of spouses and sibs were about similarly correlated (ri = 0.20 and 0.15; p less than 0.05). Data suggested that children were more related to their mother than to their father for VO2 max/kg, VO2 max/kg of fat-free weight, and particularly for max HR. It was concluded that familial resemblance and heritability estimates for maximal aerobic power, max HR and max blood La were quite low and generally nonsignificant. Correlations between biological sibs were, however, consistently significant for max HR and max blood La. The suggestion of a maternal effect in maximal aerobic power should be further investigated.  相似文献

In order to test for possible sex differences in endurance capacity, groups of young, physically active women (n = 6) and men (n = 7) performed bicycle ergometer exercise at 80% and 90% of their maximal oxygen uptakes (VO2 max). The groups were matched for age and physical activity habits. At 80% VO2 max the women performed significantly longer (P less than 0.05), 53.8 +/- 12.7 min vs 36.8 +/- 12.2 min, respectively (means +/- SD). Mid-exercise and terminal respiratory exchange ratio (R) values were significantly lower in women, suggesting a later occurrence of muscle glycogen depletion as a factor in their enhanced endurance. At 90% VO2 max the endurance times were similar for men and women, 21.2 +/- 10.3 min and 22.0 +/- 5.0 min, respectively. The blood lactate levels reached in these experiments were only marginally lower (mean differences 1.5 to 2 mmol X l-1) than those obtained at VO2 max, suggesting high lactate levels as a factor in exhaustion. The changes in body weight during the 80% experiments and the degree of hemoconcentration were not significantly different between men and women.  相似文献

To study the effects of exercise intensity and duration on excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), 8 men [age = 27.6 (SD 3.8) years, VO2max = 46.1 (SD 8.5) ml min-1 kg-1] performed four randomly assigned cycle-ergometer tests (20 min at 60% VO2max, 40 min at 60% VO2max, 20 min at 70% VO2max, and 40 min at 70% VO2max). O2 uptake, heart rate and rectal temperature were measured before, during, and for 1 h following the exercise tests. Blood for plasma lactate measurements was obtained via cannulae before, and at selected times, during and following exercise. VO2 rapidly declined to preexercise levels following each of the four testing sessions, and there were no differences in EPOC between the sessions. Blood lactate and rectal temperature increased (P < 0.05) with exercise, but had returned to preexercise levels by 40 min of recovery. The results indicate that VO2 returned to resting levels within 40 min after the end of exercise, regardless of the intensity (60% and 70% VO2max) or duration (20 min and 40 min) of the exercise, in men with a moderate aerobic fitness level.  相似文献

Significant increases in maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) were noted in nine young track athletes following an 8-week high-intensity running period (P less than 0.05). VO2max was measured, prior to and following the training program, using an on-line, open-circuit spirometry system. Parasympathetic activity was assessed using heart period variation (R-R interval in milliseconds) during carefully controlled breathing activity (R sinus arrhythmia). Following the training program, a 7.3% increase in aerobic capacity was associated with a 23.1% augmentation of efferent parasympathetic activity (P less than 0.01). These data suggest that enhanced aerobic capacity increases efferent parasympathetic tone.  相似文献

To determine whether aerobic conditioning alters the orthostatic responses of older subjects, cardiovascular performance was monitored during graded lower body negative pressure in nine highly trained male senior athletes (A) aged 59-73 yr [maximum O2 uptake (VO2 max) = 52.4 +/- 1.7 ml.kg-1 x min-1] and nine age-matched control subjects (C) (VO2 max = 31.0 +/- 2.9 ml.kg-1 x min-1). Cardiac volumes were determined from gated blood pool scintigrams by use of 99mTc-labeled erythrocytes. During lower body negative pressure (0 to -50 mmHg), left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volume indexes and stroke volume index decreased in both groups while heart rate increased. The decreases in cardiac volumes and mean arterial pressure and the increase in heart rate between 0 and -50 mmHg were significantly less in A than in C. For example, end-diastolic volume index decreased by 32 +/- 4 ml in C vs. 14 +/- 2 ml in A (P < 0.01), mean arterial pressure declined 7 +/- 5 mmHg in C and increased by 5 +/- 3 mmHg in A (P < 0.05), and heart rate increased 13 +/- 3 beats/min in C and 7 +/- 1 beats/min in A (P < 0.05). These data suggest that increased VO2 max among older men is associated with improved orthostatic responses.  相似文献

Maximal exercise responses were measured before and after 10 weeks of training in two groups of men, one trained on a treadmill (n = 12) and the other on a step ergometer (n = 9); the groups were pre- and post-tested on both machines to examine the specificity of the training modes. Training for both groups consisted of 3 days week-1, 30 min day-1, progressing to 50 min day-1, at an intensity of 75%-80% heart rate maximum reserve. Pre-training maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was significantly higher on the treadmill for both groups (X = 8.5%). VO2max increased 6.9% on the treadmill (P less than 0.05) and 6.9% (P greater than 0.05) on the step ergometer after treadmill training. The small increases may be attributed to the specificity of the testing protocols used to elicit VO2max. Significant (P less than 0.01) increases in VO2max were found for both modalities after step-ergometry training (treadmill = 11.8%; step ergometer = 23.2%). These increases resulted in equal post-test VO2max values (4.05 l min-1; 51 ml kg-1 min-1) on the step ergometer and treadmill. The significant increases in VO2max found for both modalities after step-ergometry training shows that (1) step ergometry is an effective training modality, and (2) its effects can be measured on the treadmill and therefore it is not task-specific training.  相似文献

We inadvertently subjected a group of goats to 5 mo of cold exposure (mean minimum temperature less than -13 degrees C) during an experiment designed to examine the effects of training by daily running on one member of each sibling pair. During the three coldest months, the sedentary but cold-exposed goats experienced a 34% increase in maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2 max), P < 0.01) and a 29% increase in running speed at maximal (P < 0.05). When temperatures increased in the spring, both oxygen uptake and running speed decreased. We interpret these findings as evidence that cold is a sufficient stimulus to invoke the development of aerobic structures in muscle and that these structures subsequently can be utilized for the novel task of running. When the experiment was subsequently repeated without the cold exposure, running speed and VO(2 max) of trained animals increased less than in either group of cold-exposed animals. However, the cost of transport of these warm runners was lower than either group of cold-exposed animals (from 13-19%, P < 0. 0001). Thus, although aerobic capacity was increased with acclimation to severe winter weather, cold-acclimated goats operated with lower efficiency during locomotion.  相似文献

An understanding of the physiological and behavioral determinants of resting energy requirements is important to nutritional considerations in females. We examined the influence of endurance training and self-reported dietary restraint on resting metabolic rate and fasting plasma hormones in 44 nonobese females characterized for body composition, maximal aerobic power (VO2 max), and daily energy intake. To examine the association of metabolic rate and dietary restraint with hormonal status, fasting plasma levels of insulin, glucose, and thyroid hormones (total and free fractions of thyroxine and triiodothyronine) were determined. In univariate analysis, resting metabolic rate (kcal.min-1) was positively related to VO2 max (L.min-1) (r = 0.54; p less than 0.01). This relationship, however, was partially dependent on body size, since fat-free mass was also related to resting metabolic rate (r = 0.42; p less than 0.01) and VO2 max (L.min-1) (r = 0.75; p less than 0.01). After controlling for fat-free weight using partial correlation analysis, the relation between RMR and VO2 max was weaker but controlling for fat-free weight using partial correlation analysis, the relation between RMR and VO2 max was weaker but still significant (partial r = 0.38; p less than 0.05). On the other hand, high levels of dietary restraint were associated with higher levels of body fat (r = 0.31; p less than 0.05) and a lower resting metabolic rate (r = -0.29; p = 0.07). These associations persisted after control for differences in fat-free mass. Total energy intake as well as total and free levels of triiodothyronine were not related to resting metabolic rate or level of dietary restraint.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
