Trans‐equatorial avian migrants tend to breed, moult and migrate – the main energy‐requiring events in their lifecycle – at different times. Little is known about the relationship between wing moult and pre‐migratory fuelling in waders on their non‐breeding grounds, where time is less constrained than during their brief high‐latitude breeding season. We determined age‐related strategies of Wood Sandpipers Tringa glareola to balance the energetic demands of primary moult against pre‐migratory fuelling in southern Africa by analysing body mass and primary moult at first capture of 1721 birds mist‐netted in 1972–96 at waterbodies in Zimbabwe. Adults moulted all their primaries in August–December, but immatures underwent a supplemental moult of varying numbers of outer primaries in December–April, close to departure. We used locally weighted linear regression to estimate trends in Wood Sandpiper body mass from 1 July to 1 May. They maintained low mass from arrival in July–September to February–early March. Adults fuelled from 10 February to 1 May at a mean rate of 0.25 g/day (sd = 0.16). Most adults (98%) began fuelling 10–75 days after completing primary moult. Immatures fuelled from 4 March to 13 April at 0.24 g/day (sd = 0.14). They used varying strategies depending on their condition: a brief gap between moult and fuelling; an overlap of these processes near departure, leading to slower fuelling; or skipping fuelling altogether and staying in southern Africa for a ‘gap year’. Immatures moulting three or five outer primaries fuelled more slowly than post‐moult birds. Immatures moulting four outer primaries started fuelling 3 weeks later but at a higher rate than did post‐moult birds of this group. In post‐moult immatures, the later they ended moult, the later and faster they fuelled. The heaviest adults and immatures using all moult patterns accumulated fuel loads of c. 50% of lean body mass, and could potentially cross 2397–4490 km to reach the Great Rift Valley in one non‐stop flight. Immatures were more flexible in the timing and extent of moult and in the timing and rate of fuelling than adults. This flexibility enables inexperienced Wood Sandpipers to cope with inter‐annual differences in feeding conditions at Africa's ephemeral inland waterbodies.  相似文献

We present the first report of complete overlap of breeding and moult in a shorebird. In southeastern Australia, Hooded Plovers Thinornis rubricollis spend their entire lives on oceanic beaches, where they exhibit biparental care. Population moult encompassed the 6‐month breeding season. Moult timing was estimated using the Underhill–Zucchini method for Type 2 data with a power transformation to accommodate sexual differences in rates of moult progression in the early and late stages of moult. Average moult durations were long in females (170.3 ± 14.2 days), and even longer in males (210.3 ± 13.5 days). Breeding status was known for most birds in our samples, and many active breeders (especially males) were also growing primaries. Females delayed the onset of primary moult but were able to increase the speed of moult and continue breeding, completing moult at about the same time as males. The mechanism by which this was achieved appeared to be flexibility in moult sequence. All moult formulae fell on one of two linked moult sequences, one faster than the other. The slower sequence had fewer feathers growing concurrently and also had formulae indicating suspended moults. Switching between sequences via common formulae is possible at many points during the moult cycle, and three of 12 recaptures were confirmed to have switched sequences in the same moult season. Hooded Plovers thus have a prolonged primary moult with the flexibility to change their rate of moult; this may facilitate high levels of replacement clutches that are associated with passive nest defence and low reproductive success.  相似文献

Moult data from 302 museum skins and 11 trapped birds from sub-Saharan Africa show the course of flight feather moult. Most birds seem to start flight-feather moult soon after arrival in their southern African non-breeding ranges. About 75% of the birds had started before mid-December, i.e., during the main arrival time of the species. The mode of moult scores 1 and 2 was reached on 7 December; the last birds with a score of zero occurred in the first days of January. The mode of moult scores 5 and 6 was reached on 27 February. Thus, the time elapsed between the days when 50% of the population had reached the first and last stages of recorded moult was about 82 days; nine days later 75% had reached this last stage before moult was completed. Thus, individual moult may be estimated to cover about 80–90 days. The main moulting period is between mid-November and mid-March, thus covering about four months. No temporal difference was detected between males and females. A tendency for an advancement of adults compared to young birds was not statistically significant. According to the progress of the moult, sexing of young birds in the field is possible for 50% of the birds towards the end of January and for most birds before mid-February.  相似文献

Wing and tail morphology strongly affect flight performance which may consequently decline during feather moult due to the creation of feather gaps in the flight‐surface. Hence, the size and shape of moult‐related gaps may directly affect flight capacity. Here, I examined the divergent rectrix moult sequence compared to the more common distal moult sequence. In the divergent moult, the focus of rectrix moult is shifted from the tail centre (R1; rectrices numbered distally from mid‐tail outward) to another rectrix (R2 or R3), and then rectrices are moulted bidirectionally, towards the tail centre and outwards. The result of this moult sequence is the splitting of the tail gap into multiple smaller gaps. Using a large moult database including 5669 individuals of 47 Western Palaearctic passerine species, I found evidence of divergent moult sequence for only seven species. Using comparative and experimental approaches, I found that the divergent rectrix sequence is correlated with higher moult speed and lower aerodynamic cost. Furthermore, the divergent rectrix sequence is more common among adults than juveniles. This work focused on the feather moult sequence – a seldom studied aspect of the avian life‐history. I propose that moult‐related aerodynamic costs may be an important evolutionary factor not only in moult speed, but also in moult sequence.  相似文献

For secondary forests, the major forest resources in China (accounting for more than 50% of the national total), soil respiration (R S) and the relationship between R S and various biotic/abiotic factors are poorly understood. The objectives of the present study were to examine seasonal variations in soil respiration during the growing season, and to explore the factors affecting the variation in soil respiration rates for three forest types (Mongolian oak, Manchurian walnut and mixed forests) of temperate secondary forest in Northeast China. The results showed that (1) the maximum total R S rate occurred in July, following a bell-shaped curve with season, (2) for all forest types, the total R S was significantly influenced by soil temperature (< 0.01), and did not significantly correlate with soil moisture, (3) compared with fine root biomass, coarse root biomass was more closely related with the root respiration in mixed forest (R 2 = 0.711, = 0.017) and in Manchurian walnut forest (R 2 = 0.768, = 0.010), and (4) microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen were significantly correlated with heterotrophic R S in Mongolian oak forest (R 2 = 0.664, = 0.026; R 2 = 0.784, = 0.008, respectively) and in mixed forest (R 2 = 0.918, = 0.001; R 2 = 0.967, = 0.001, respectively). We can conclude that in temperate secondary forests: (1) the R S rate and the relationships between R S and abiotic/biotic factors change greatly with forest types, and (2) R S is strongly influenced by soil temperature, MBC, microbial biomass nitrogen and coarse root biomass in temperate secondary forests.  相似文献

We investigated moult strategies in Loggerhead Shrikes by examining first prebasic or preformative moult patterns and by assessing the general location where individual feathers were grown using stable hydrogen isotope (δ2H) analysis. We tested the relative importance of factors known to impact moult timing and pattern, including age, sex, body size, food availability and migration. Migratory Shrikes showed evidence of suspended moult, in which feathers are moulted on both the breeding and the non‐breeding grounds with a suspension of moult during migration. Extent of moult was best explained by sex, longitude, migratory behaviour and breeding‐ground latitude. Male Hatch Year (HY) Shrikes replaced more feathers on the breeding grounds prior to migration than did HY females and moulted more extensively on the breeding grounds than did females. Non‐migratory HY Shrikes underwent a more extensive preformative moult than migratory HY Shrikes. Individuals in more southerly migratory populations moulted more extensively on the breeding grounds than did those breeding further north. Our data also indicate that individuals in the northeastern populations moulted more extensively on the breeding grounds than did those in the north and southwest. Our study underlines the complex structure and variation in moult possible within species, revealing surprising levels of differentiation between sexes and age cohorts, linked to environmental factors on the breeding grounds. Our study highlights the utility of an intrinsic marker, specifically δ2H analysis, to test hypotheses regarding the evolutionary and ecological forces driving moult. Although the methodology has not commonly been applied to this area of research, our results indicate that it can provide unprecedented insight into inter‐ and intra‐specific adaptive response to constraints, whereby individuals maximize fitness.  相似文献

Feather holes represent damage to the plumage of birds and are correlated with delayed moult. Uropygial gland size is negatively correlated with feather holes. Consequently, it was predicted that birds with smaller uropygial glands would have more feather holes, and that this would affect moult performance. I examined this prediction in the House Sparrow Passer domesticus. Individuals with smaller uropygial glands had more feather holes, and those with more feather holes moulted later and faster. Therefore, uropygial gland size seemed to affect moult performance via its effect on feather holes. Uropygial gland size may have a positive effect on plumage quality, through a negative effect on feather holes, and therefore on moult timing and speed.  相似文献

During partial moults birds replace a variable number or percentage of old feathers. This quantity, known as moult extent, has been a primary variable used in comparative studies. However, different spatial configurations of feather replacement may result from an equal number of renewed feathers. Few studies have addressed spatial aspects of moult, which may vary among species, among individuals of the same species and between episodes at the individual level. We present a novel approach to quantify the spatial configuration of a wing‐moult episode, hereafter referred to as moult topography, which comprises two elements, namely extent and vector, the latter condensing the spatial configuration of the replaced feathers on the wing plane. We apply this method to investigate preformative (post‐juvenile) wing‐feather moult pattern in the Spot‐breasted Wren Pheugopedius maculipectus and the White‐breasted Wood‐Wren Henicorhina leucosticta. We specified a null model of wing‐moult topography by which feather replacement follows a discrete anterior–posterior (vertical) axis between tracts and a discrete proximal–distal (horizontal) axis within tracts, and whereby wing feathers from a new tract are replaced only if all the feathers from the previous (anterior) tract have been replaced. Our sample of Spot‐breasted Wrens showed a strict single pattern of replacement that did not differ significantly from the null model. Our sample of White‐breasted Wood‐Wrens, however, differed significantly from the null model, showing prioritization of proximal wing feathers closer to the body. These differences might have biological relevance, for example in mate selection or in response to different environmental stressors, and might reveal the influence of these factors on the evolution of moult strategies. Overall, moult topography provides a new approach to future ecological and evolutionary studies of moult.  相似文献

Summary We examined a large data set of adult and juvenile Great Reed Warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), caught over five years, to study the occurrence of complete moult in a Spanish population. A total of 27 adults and 5 juveniles were in active moult. The proportion of birds moulting each year varied between 0.03 and 0.19. Nearly half the adults were finishing moult. At least one bird was certainly of local origin, rather than on passage, and four more were moulting when retrapped in subsequent years, suggesting that they too were resident breeders in the area. Some other birds were probably resident also, because they were in moult when caught at the beginning of August. Two of the five juveniles finished their moult in the area. In conclusion, our data seem to show that complete moult before departure to the wintering quarters is a regular process undertaken by some of the breeding population of Great Reed Warblers in north-east Spain.

From August to December, thousands of Black‐necked Grebes Podiceps nigricollis concentrate during the flightless moult period in salt ponds in the Odiel Marshes, southern Spain, where they feed on the brine shrimp Artemia parthenogenetica. We predicted that because Black‐necked Grebes moulted in a food‐rich, predator‐free environment, there would be no net loss of body mass caused by the use of fat stored to meet energy needs during remigial feather replacement (as is the case for some other diving waterbirds). However, because the food resource disappears in winter, we predicted that grebes moulting later in the season would put on more body mass prior to moult because of the increasing risk of an Artemia population crash before the moult period is completed. Body mass determinations of thousands of birds captured during 2000–2010 showed that grebes in active wing‐moult showed greater mass with date of capture. Early‐moulting grebes were significantly lighter at all stages than late‐moulting birds. Grebes captured with new feathers post‐moult were significantly lighter than those in moult. This is the first study to support the hypothesis that individual waterbirds adopt different strategies in body mass accumulation according to timing of moult: early‐season grebes were able to acquire an excess of energy over expenditure and accumulate fat stores while moulting. Delayed moulters acquired greater fat stores in advance of moult to contribute to energy expenditure for feather replacement and retained extra stores later, most likely as a bet hedge against the increasing probability of failing food supply and higher thermoregulatory demands late in the season. An alternative hypothesis, that mass change is affected by a trophically transmitted cestode using brine shrimps as an intermediate host and Black‐necked Grebes as final host, was not supported by the data.  相似文献

Trade‐offs between moult and fuelling in migrant birds vary with migration distance and the environmental conditions they encounter. We compared wing moult and fuelling at the northern and southern ends of migration in two populations of adult Common Whitethroats Sylvia communis. The western population moults most remiges at the breeding grounds in Europe (e.g. Poland) and migrates 4000–5000 km to western Africa (e.g. Nigeria). The eastern population moults all remiges at the non‐breeding grounds and migrates 7000–10 000 km from western Asia (e.g. southwestern Siberia) to eastern and southern Africa. We tested the hypotheses that: (1) Whitethroats moult their wing feathers slowly in South Africa, where they face fewer time constraints than in Poland, and (2) fuelling is slower when it coincides with moulting (Poland, South Africa) than when it occurs alone (Siberia, Nigeria). We estimated moult timing of primaries, secondaries and tertials from moult records of Polish and South African Whitethroats ringed in 1987–2017 and determined fuelling patterns from the body mass of Whitethroats ringed in all four regions. The western population moulted wing feathers in Poland over 55 days (2 July–26 August) at a varying rate, up to 13 feathers simultaneously, but fuelled slowly until departure in August–mid‐September. In Nigeria, during the drier period of mid‐February–March they fuelled slowly, but the fuelling rate increased three‐fold in April–May after the rains before mid‐April–May departure. The eastern population did not moult in Siberia but fuelled three times faster before mid‐July–early August departure than did the western birds moulting in Poland. In South Africa, the Whitethroats moulted over 57 days (2 January–28 February) at a constant rate of up to nine feathers simultaneously and fuelled slowly from mid‐December until mid‐April–May departure. These results suggest the two populations use contrasting strategies to capitalize on food supplies before departure from breeding and non‐breeding grounds.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the age and some growth characteristics of Atlantic stargazer (Uranoscopus scaber) from Iskenderun Bay (Northeastern Mediterranean). For this purpose, a total of 150 Atlantic stargazer ranging in size from 9.1 to 28.0 cm in total length (weight: 11.7–345.7 g) were collected as by-catch from a commercial trawl fishing boat at a depth of 80–100 m between May 2015 and January 2016. The bottom trawl gear used was equipped with a 44 mm stretched mesh size net at the cod-end. The percentage of females and males were 46.7% and 53.3% respectively. The total length–weight relationships equation with coefficient of determination (R2) were found as W = 0.011*TL3.131, R2 = .9728, for all individuals, W = 0.015*TL3.021, R2 = .9512 for females and W = 0.0102*TL3.136, R2 = .9553 for males. By using the von Bertalanffy equation, the growth parameters of Atlantic stargazer were estimated to be L = 42.35 cm, k = 0.098, t0 = −1.8474 for all individuals; L = 36.92 cm, k = 0.138, t0 = −1.2693 for females and L = 38.77 cm, k = 0.1, t0 = −2.334 for males. In this study, age reading was done by two independent readers and index of average percentage error (IAPE) was calculated as 6.1%. The highest condition factor value calculated as 1.81 in the age group 6 and the lowest condition factor value was calculated as 1.48 in the age group 1.  相似文献

Because many species of large birds must remain capable of flight during moult and breeding, complete replacement of all flight feathers often takes two or more years, with the result that their plumage normally includes many faded, worn and sometimes even broken feathers. It seems adaptive for such birds to have the ability to quickly replace severely damaged feathers. In search of such a feather replacement mechanism, we cut rectrices on a captive Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos and found that feathers cut in their first year of use were replaced, on average, after 11.4 months, whereas uncut feathers before and during the experiment were moulted, on average, after 24 months of use. Feather cutting advanced moult, on average, in excess of a year and thereby demonstrates the existence of a previously undescribed neurophysiological mechanism for preferentially replacing damaged feathers.  相似文献

Accurate and precise estimates of nitrogen (N) excretion in faeces and urine of dairy cattle may provide direct tools to improve N management and thus, to mitigate environmental pollution from dairy production. Empirical equations of N excretion have been evaluated for indoor dairy cattle but there is no evaluation for cows fed high proportions of fresh forage. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to evaluate N excretion equations with a unique data set of zero-grazing experiments. Through literature searches, 89 predictive equations were identified from 13 studies. An independent data set was developed from seven zero-grazing experiments with, in total, 55 dairy Holstein-Friesian cows. Models’ performance was evaluated with statistics derived from a mixed-effect model and a simple regression analysis model. Squared sample correlation coefficients were used as indicators of precision and based on either the best linear unbiased predictions (R2BLUP) or model-predicted estimates (R2MDP) derived from the mixed model and simple regression analysis, respectively. The slope (β0), the intercept (β1) and the root mean square prediction error (RMSPEm%) were calculated with the mixed-effect model and used to assess accuracy. The root mean square prediction error (RMSPEsr%) and the decomposition of the mean square prediction error were calculated with the simple regression analysis and were used to estimate the error due to central tendency (mean bias), regression (systematic bias), and random variation. Concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) were also calculated with the simple regression analysis model and were used to simultaneously assess accuracy and precision. Considering both analysis models, results suggested that urinary N excretion (UN; R2MDP = 0.76, R2BLUP = 0.89, RMSPEm% = 17.2, CCC = 0.82), total manure N excretion (ManN; R2MDP = 0.83, R2BLUP = 0.90, RMSPEm% = 11.0, CCC = 0.84) and N apparently digested (NAD; R2MDP = 0.97, R2BLUP = 0.97, RMSPEm% = 5.3, CCC = 0.95) were closely related to N intake. Milk N secretion was better predicted using milk yield as a single independent variable (MilkN; R2MDP = 0.77, R2BLUP = 0.97, RMSPEm% = 6.0, CCC = 0.74). Additionally, DM intake was a good predictor of UN and ManN and dietary CP concentration of UN and ManN. Consequently, results suggest that several evaluated empirical equations can be used to make accurate and precise predictions concerning N excretion from dairy cows being fed on fresh forage.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of stand density [938 tree ha−1 for high stand density (HD), 600 tree ha−1 for medium stand density (MD), and 375 tree ha−1 for low stand density (LD)] on soil CO2 efflux (R S) in a 70-year-old natural Pinus densiflora S. et Z. forest in central Korea. Concurrent with R S measurements, we measured litterfall, total belowground carbon allocation (TBCA), leaf area index (LAI), soil temperature (ST), soil water content (SWC), and soil nitrogen (N) concentration over a 2-year period. The R S (t C ha−1 year−1) and leaf litterfall (t C ha−1 year−1) values varied with stand density: 6.21 and 2.03 for HD, 7.45 and 2.37 for MD, and 6.96 and 2.23 for LD, respectively. In addition, R S was correlated with ST (R 2 = 0.77–0.80, P < 0.001) and SWC (R 2 = 0.31–0.35, P < 0.001). It appeared that stand density influenced R S via changes in leaf litterfall, LAI and SWC. Leaf litterfall (R 2 = 0.71), TBCA (R 2 = 0.64–0.87), and total soil N contents in 2007 (R 2 = 0.94) explained a significant amount of the variance in R S (P < 0.01). The current study showed that stand density is one of the key factors influencing R S due to the changing biophysical and environmental factors in P. densiflora.  相似文献

We quantified sedimentation of organic carbon in 12 Swedish small boreal lakes (<0.48 km2), which ranged in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from 4.4 to 21.4 mg C l−1. Stable isotope analysis suggests that most of the settling organic matter is of allochthonous origin. Annual sedimentation of allochthonous matter per m2 lake area was correlated to DOC concentration in the water (R 2 = 0.41), and the relationship was improved when sedimentation data were normalized to water depth (R 2 = 0.58). The net efflux of C as CO2 from the water to the atmosphere was likewise correlated to DOC concentration (R 2 = 0.52). The losses of organic carbon from the water column via mineralization to CO2 and via sedimentation were approximately of equal importance throughout the year. Our results imply that DOC is a precursor of the settling matter, resulting in an important pathway in the carbon cycle of boreal lakes. Thus, flocculation of DOC of terrestrial origin and subsequent sedimentation could lead to carbon sequestration by burial in lake sediments.  相似文献

Determining the year‐round distribution and behaviour of birds is necessary for a better understanding of their ecology and foraging strategies. Petrels form an important component of the high‐latitude seabird assemblages in terms of species and individuals. The distribution and foraging ecology of three sympatric fulmarine petrels (Southern Fulmar Fulmarus glacialoides, Cape Petrel Daption capense and Snow Petrel Pagodroma nivea) were studied at Adélie Land, East Antarctica, by combining information from miniaturized saltwater immersion geolocators and stable isotopes from feathers. During the breeding season at a large spatial scale (c. 200 km), the three species overlapped in their foraging areas located in the vicinity of the colonies but were segregated by their diet and trophic level, as indicated by the different chick δ15N values that increased in the order Cape Petrel < Southern Fulmar < Snow Petrel. During the non‐breeding season, the three fulmarines showed species‐specific migration strategies along a wide latitudinal gradient. Snow Petrels largely remained in ice‐associated Antarctic waters, Southern Fulmars targeted primarily the sub‐Antarctic zone and Cape Petrels migrated further north. Overall, birds spent less time in flight during the non‐breeding period than during the breeding season, with the highest percentage of time spent sitting on the water occurring during the breeding season and at the beginning of the non‐breeding period before migration. This activity pattern, together with the δ13C values of most feathers, strongly suggests that moult of the three fulmarine petrels occurred at that time in the very productive high Antarctic waters, where birds fed on a combination of crustaceans and fish. The study highlights different segregating mechanisms that allow the coexistence of closely related species, specifically, prey partitioning during the breeding season and spatial segregation at sea during the non‐breeding season.  相似文献

Fundamental to effective management of migratory waterbird populations is an understanding of their flyway delineation. Taiga Bean Geese Anser fabalis fabalis wintering in NW Denmark, Scotland and England are considered to originate from northern and central Sweden, southern and central Norway (‘Western flyway’), those wintering in southern Sweden, NE and southern Denmark are considered to originate from northern Fennoscandia and western Russia (‘Central flyway’), and those wintering in eastern Germany and Poland (which show far less favourable conservation status) are thought to come from western Siberia (‘Eastern 1 flyway’), although evidence to demonstrate this has largely been lacking. Evidence for different natal and moult origins of Taiga Bean Geese was investigated using stable isotope analyses of feathers of four elements (δ2H, δ13C, δ15N and δ34S). There were significant differences in isotopic composition of feathers from Swedish (Central) and German (Eastern 1) wintering populations and those moulting in Sweden in late summer (Western), which validated the three proposed major management flyway units above. The strong continental gradient in the stable hydrogen isotope ratios in precipitation (δ2Hp) across the region was used to assign wintering birds geospatially to natal and moulting origin, indicating separate natal and moulting areas for German (= 37, from western Siberia) and Swedish (= 20, Fennoscandia and more western Russia) wintering birds. These results confirm the largely discrete nature of these three flyways and contribute significantly to our ability to deliver effective targeted and appropriate research, monitoring and management actions throughout the ranges of these flyways.  相似文献

We examined the spatial fidelity in the pattern in species richness, abundance and composition of ants, birds, mammals and reptiles in a Eucalyptus vegetation type in Australian tropical savanna woodland. We sampled 32 sites representing intact (uncleared) vegetation, and three treatments of different clearing age (2, 12 and 18 years). We investigated whether each fauna taxon could act a surrogate for pattern in the other, and whether they responded in parallel to time since clearing. Reptiles and mammals were combined into a single group. The correlation between taxa was low for abundance (the best being between rept/mamm and ant abundance R = 0.34) and moderate for species richness (varied from 0.36 to 0.44). Mantel tests identified a moderately strong relationship between bird and rept/mamm composition (R = 0.48). Recent clearing (2–12 years) depleted both abundance and species richness of the vertebrate fauna, whereas ant abundance spiked. Ant species richness was consistent over time since clearing. ANOSIM revealed that clearing age was a strong a priori predictor of birds and rept/mamm composition (Global R = 0.48, 0.65, respectively), whereas it was not for ants (Global R = 0.20). Pair-wise comparisons suggested that for birds, rept/mamm, there was consistent changes in composition from intact woodlands to different aged clearing. This was not the case for ants; most distinct variation in composition occurred between treatments of increasing in clearing age (2–18 years R = 0.69, 12–18 years R = 0.65). The results of this study do not support the use of ants as a surrogate of vertebrates at a local scale in a cleared and intact vegetation mosaic. We acknowledge that identification of universal surrogates and indicators are difficult to find, but funding and political expediency that demand rapid solutions to conservation planning necessitate continued investigation of the merits of using surrogate species.  相似文献

Chemical composition and in vitro analyses were used to predict the nutritional value of 164 experimental rabbit diets evaluated in six European Laboratories under standardised conditions. The equations were mainly developed by stepwise regression analysis with over two third of the samples (111) used as calibration set. The other third (53) was used as validation set, and a study of the residues was undertaken to calculate the error of validation. Twenty three different equations have been proposed to predict the nutritional value (mainly gross energy digestibility, GEd; and digestible energy, DE) of rabbit diets, as a function of the available variables. Acid detergent fibre (ADFom) was the chemical variable most closely related to GEd and DE (R2 = 0.49 and 0.43, respectively, RSD = 0.033 and 0.62, for GEd and DE, respectively), but the in vitro DM digestibility (DMdinv) predicted the energy value with greater accuracy (R2 = 0.7, 0.52, for GEd and DE, respectively) and lower standard error (RSD = 0.025, 0.58 for GEd and DE, respectively). The latter equations were improved (R2 = 0.81, 0.74 for GEd and DE, respectively) when ether extract (EE) and Lignin (sa) were included. The use of additive equations that predict the DE from the main constituents that supply energy (protein, ether extract and carbohydrates) did not increase the precision, nor decrease the validation error respect to the simplest ones. Digestible Energy was predicted with a similar accuracy and validation errors than GEd. Crude protein digestibility (CPd) was better predicted from chemical analysis (Lignin (sa), R2 = 0.49) than for DMdinv. The further inclusion of CP slightly increased its coefficient of determination (0.53). The error of validation was relatively low (0.050 as average) and of the same magnitude than the RSD of the equations.  相似文献
