  • Reproductive performance is known to differ between co‐sexual and non‐co‐sexual species. Thus, our aim was to determine whether: (i) the distance between sex structures is negatively associated with sex expression; (ii) male gametangia take longer to mature in rhizautoicous species than in gonioautoicous species; and (iii) the gonioautoicous sexual system has greater reproductive success (i.e. percentage of ramets with sporophyte) than the rhizautoicous sexual system.
  • One population each of the mosses Fissidens scariosus and F. submarginatus, rhizautoicous and gonioautoicous, respectively, in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in Brazil were sampled monthly from September 2016 until August 2017. The number and phenophases of antheridia, archegonia and sporophytes were analysed for each species. Sexual expression and reproductive success were calculated, and reproductive phenology compared across environmental variables.
  • As expected, sexual expression was significantly higher for the gonioautoicous species, which produced antheridia throughout the year and archegonia over many months, while gametangia production by the rhizautoicous species occurred only during the rainy season. Mean number of gametangia per perigonium and perichaetium were slightly higher for the rhizautoicous species (6.84 antheridia; 11.38 archegonia) than for the gonioautoicous species (4.39; 7.62). Gametangia and sporophyte production in the rhizautoicous species were markedly seasonal compared to that of the gonioautoicous species, although reproductive success did not differ.
  • Therefore, we infer that the rhizautoicy (i.e. a functional dioicy) promotes lower expression of gametangia compared to gonioautoicy but is more efficient and so obtains the same reproductive success.

The external appearance of gametophytes and gametangia of Pteriscretica closely resembled those of sexually reproducing ferns.Antheridia were fully functional but archegonia were not. Despitethe formation of egg, ventral and neck canal cells, the flask-shapedarchegonia failed to open and Pteris spermatozoids failed toexhibit a chemotactic response to them. Cryo SEM revealed thatthe topmost cells of mature archegonia had collapsed, and thisis thought to account for the loss of archegonial function.   1. Apprehension over the adequncy of current techniques stimulateda detailed study of the time factor in the arsenate inhibitionof growth and respiration in excised stem and root sectionsof Pisum sativum.
  2. Growth inhibition by arsenate sets in veryslowly, its rateof onset being related to the molar concentration(C) of arsenateate by the relation where T50 is the time taken in hours to reduce the growthrateto 50 per cent of the control and K is a constant. An explanationof the physiological basis of this relationship is attempted.
  3. Estimates were made of the final steady growth rate (relativeto control) in various arsenate concentrations. The inhibitionscalculated from this rate are held to approximate to the truearsenate effect and are shown to be very different from thosecalculated from ‘total growth’ measures.
  4. Respirationof growing stem sections is not inhibited by thelow arsenateconcentrations that inhibit growth. Some inhibitionis indicatedat high concentrations (3 ? 10–4M. and over)but onlyafter 15-20 hours of exposure.
  5. Two per cent sucrose has noeffect on the arsenate inhibiitionof stem growth. Sucrose,however, markedly stimulates respirationin stem sections, butthis stimulation is prevented by arsenate.
  6. The misinterpretationswhich may arise as a result of ignoringthe time factor in inhibitionstudies in excised organ sectionsare discussed and the desirabilityof constructing completegrowth curves in all such studies isstressed.

  1. The woody shoots of young saplings of Fraxinus.excelsior andAcer Pseudo-platanus in pots were subjected to continuous coolingto about 2° C. during the growth season, with the resultthat radial growth was almost completely inhibited throughoutthe woody stem.
  2. The chilling did not adversely affect extensiongrowth exceptthat it was later in commencement and proceededmore slowly.
  3. If the temperature around the stem is loweredfrom 2° C.to 0° C., water conduction is cut down tosuch an extentas to cause wilting of the leafy shoots; turgidityis recoveredwhen the temperature is again raised to 2°C.
  4. This wilting effect is discussed particularly in relationtothe part played by living cells in the upward movement ofwaterin the wood.

  1. Daily and seasonal variations occur in the water content ofHelix aspersa Müller.
  2. The water content is not constantthroughout 24 hours but fluctuatesby 2 to 10%. There is noapparent daily rhythm.
  3. Humidity has an effect on the watercontent. Falls in relativehumidity to 60% or less, triggera decrease of the snails' hydration,over a range of temperatures,as well as a brief pause in activity.

  1. Data are presented which show the effect of the natural stimulatingsolution on the respiration of the seeds of Striga hermonthica.
  2. The stimulating solution has been shown to enhance the aerobicrespiration of seeds exposed to it, compared with that of seedsto distilled water at the same temperature. This effect on therespiration of the seeds is quite independent of any previousmoisture-treatment of the seeds, and thus of germination.
  3. Themaximum anaerobic rate of carbon-dioxide output of air-dryseedsafter treatment with the stimulating solution may be upto fifteentimes greater than that of seeds moistened with distilledwater.The anaerobic respiration of air-dry seeds after exposuretothe stimulating solution is greatly reduced by 0?025 M. sodiumfluoride and 0?001 M. sodium monoiodoacetate.
  4. The stimulatingsolution has been found to have little effecton the anaerobicoutput of carbon dioxide from seeds which hadbeen moisture-treatedfor 6 days at 22? C. before treatmentwith the stimulating solution.
  5. No correlation could be established between the effects ofthestimulating solution on germination and respiration.

In Marginariella urvilliana gametes are produced in the thirdyear and then annually for several years. On germination ofthe egg a single primary rhizoid is formed. Its early subdivisioninto four main branches is unusual amongst the Fucaceae. Growthof both the main axis and of the receptacles is carried outby a three-sided apical cell. The oogonia develop earlier thanthe antheridia. Nuclear divisions are completed within the conceptacle,often several weeks before extrusion of oospheres. The liberatedoosphere is held in a tubular stalk until after fertilizationand the sporeling has begun to develop. Marginariella has affinities with the other endemic submergedAustralasian fucoids, and together these form a rather isolatedgroup, probably rightly included within the Fucaceae.  相似文献

An estimateof the relativeimportance of net assimilation rate, leaf numberand area perleaf in determining total plant size has been calculatedforthe different nutrient treatments. Comparisons are madewithprevious results for barley and flax.

  1. 3-Indolylacetonitrile is more active than 3-indolylacetic acidin the Avena straight-growth test, but less active in the Avenacurvature test at comparable concentrations. Reasons for thisare discussed, and results of previous work on plant extractsusing the curvature test as a means of assay are considered.
  2. Transport of both the acid and the nitrile is polar, fromapexto base of the coleoptile. The nitrile can reach the growingcells as easily, and possibly more easily, than the acid. Thesignificance of these findings for a theory on the mechanismof action of the nitrile is discussed.
  3. The nitrile is inactivein the pea curvature test and straight-growthof pea stem sectionsexcept at high concentrations. It is alsoinactive or only slightlyactive in lateral bud inhibition,root initiation, and petioleabscission at the concentrationstested.
  4. It is less activethan the acid in root inhibition in cress,but approximatelyas active in Avena. It is approximately asactive as the acidin parthenocarpic fruit development, andinitiation of cambialactivity.
  5. The significance of these results is discussed.

As part of a general investigation into the exchange of gasesbetween the bogbean, Menyanthes trifoliata, and its environment,determinations have been made of the composition of the internalatmosphere of the plant at five different levels, viz. leafyshoot, three successive portions of stem, and roots.
  2. Procedureis described for the analysis of small gas samplesusing a modificationof the Bonnier and Mangin apparatus.
  3. In darkness with thelower part of the plant surrounded by anatmosphere of nitrogen,it has not been possible to show thepresence of a regular downwardsgradient of oxygen, such aswould be expected on a basis ofnormal gaseous diffusion.
  4. Under these Air Top/Nitrogen Bottomconditions the roots areshown to contain between 12?5 and 17?5percent, of oxygen intheir intercellular gas system. The portionof stem immediatelyadjacent to the roots showed an oxygen levelof from 14?0 to18?0 per cent.
  5. In plants kept under NitrogenTop/Air Bottom conditions in thedark for 48 hours, the concentrationof oxygen in the rootsfell to a level of 3?1 per cent, or belowin three plants andto 6?o per cent, in a fourth. The oxygenconcentration in theadjacent lowermost part of the stem wasas high as 18?0 percent., depending on the degree of aerationof the solution bathingthe stem. It is suggested that thisdistribution of oxygen canbe related to the relative impermeabilityof roots and of stemendodermis to gaseous diffusion from without,and it is thoughtthat the major part of the oxygen supply tothe roots is transportedto them through the stelar air passages.
  6. Some evidence is presented to show that oxygen passes fromthelower parts of the plant into the medium surrounding it.

  1. A method has been developed to measure the hydraulic conductivityof the wall of the internodal cell of Nitella flexilis.
  2. Therate of water penetration through the cell wall varies linearlywith the hydrostatic pressure difference between the two sidesof the wall, showing that water permeability of the cell wallremains independent of the pressure difference applied.
  3. Waterpermeability of the cell wall is inversely proportionalto itsthickness It is 30µµmin–3{dot}atm–3when the thickness of the wall is 10 µ.
  4. Water permeabilityof the cell wall is the same for inward andoutward water flow.The polar water permeability of the entiremembrane system (walland protoplasmic part) of the living celldemonstrated by KAMIYAand TAZAWA (1) is, therefore, due tothe living protoplasmicpart.
  5. The ratio of the inward to outward permeability constantsofthe protoplasmic layer alone is higher than that of the entiremembrane system composed of protoplasmic layer and cell wall.

Previous views on the physical basis of phototropism in Phycomycessporangiophores are briefly discussed.
  1. It was confirmed thatunilaterally illuminated sporangiophoresimmersed in liquidparaffin show strong negative phototropism.
  2. Elongation growthceased and no phototropic response took placeunder anaerobicconditions.
  3. By focusing a fine beam of light on to one edgeof the growingzone of a sporangiophore, leaving the other sidein darkness,it was established that greater elongation tookplace in theilluminated zone, the sporangiophore tending tobend out ofthe beam. Rapid reversal of the curvature followedwhen theillumination was transferred to the opposite edge ofthe sporangiophore.
Wassink and Boumann's suggestion that phototropism can be initiatedby a one-quantum-per-cell process is criticized in the lightof this result and other work by Castle.  相似文献

Two neutral plant hormones, one isolated recently from plants(3-indolylacetonitrile) and the other (3-indolylacetaldehyde)reported to be present in plants, are avaible as pure syntheticcompounds for investigation of their biological activities.This paper is mainly concerned with their effects on cellelongationin the Avena coleoptile
  2. 3-Indolylacetaldehyde is considerablyless active than 3-indolylaceticacid in the Avena straight-growthtest; for example, a 1.0 mg./l.solution of the aldehyde showsan activity equivalent to thatof a 0.1 mg./l. solution of theacid
  3. An acidic substance is produced in solutions of the aldehydeduring the period of assay. In some experiments it accountsfor all of the activity shown by the aldehyde solutions, onthe assumption that it is 3-indoylacetic acid, and in otherexperiments it shows a greater activity than that of the aldehydesolutions from which it was obtained. Therefore, it is concludedthat 3-indolylacetaldehyde, itself is either inactive or inhibitory.Acid production in aldehyde solutions in vitro is much lower,a fact which suggests that there is enzymatic oxidation of aldehydeto acid in the presence of coleoptiles.
  4. The activities of3-indolylacetaldehyde in the pea test andin root-inhibitionand of 3-indolylacetone in the straight-growthtest are brieflyreported.
  5. 3-Indolylacetonitrile is considerably more activethan 3-indolylaceaticacid in the Avena straight-growth test;for erample, a 0.1 mg./l.solution of the nitrile shows an activityequivalent to a 1.0mg./l. solution of the acid. The inhibitoryeffect at concentrationsabove 1.0–10.0 mg./l. is lesswith the nitrile than withthe acid.
  6. There is negligible productionof acid in solutions of the nitrileboth in vitro and in thepresence of Avena coleoptiles at temperaturesranging from –18?to 25? C. for varying lengths of time.The possibility of enzymaticconvesion of nitrile to acid insidethe cells of the coleoptileis discussed
  7. The activities of 3-indolylacetamide and of 2:4-dichlorophenoxyaceticacid and the corresponding nitrile are considered in this connexion
  8. The nitrile is destroyed by treatment with alkali but notbyacid. In the light of these results, it is desirable to re-examineprevious work on identification of auxins in plants by theiracid and alkali sensitivity. Evidence for the existence of thenitrile in a number of other plants is presented.

The Growth and Reproductive Cycle of Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The reproductive cycle of the moss Pleurozium schreberi hasbeen investigated by scoring over 600 specimens from Britainand elsewhere, and through regular observations on several populations.P. schreberi is at least functionally dioecious and the stemsare perennial, producing all the inflorescences of a given cycleduring the autumn. On male plants perigonia develop in largenumbers, principally on lateral branches. Relatively few perichaetiaare formed on female stems where they are largely confined tothe main axes. In Britain perigonial development begins in August,the antheridia remaining in the immature stage during the winterresting phase. Young perichaetia are first recorded in Octoberand the archegonia overwinter in the juvenile stage. Rapid gametangialdevelopment takes place in spring prior to the main fertilizationperiod in April and May. Young sporophytes are present fromMay onwards. Setal elongation is delayed until August, but thelate operculum intact stage is reached by October. In Britainthe spores are shed between January and April, nine to twelvemonths after fertilization. Data from the literature and fromFrench, Finnish, and North American specimens suggests a similarcycle in other areas, though with slight differences, notablythat fertilization in parts of Scandinavia may be delayed comparedwith Britain. The results from periodic measurements of marked plants andother techniques suggest that in Britain vegetative growth mayalso show a winter resting phase, stem elongation being recordedonly from April to November.  相似文献

The Assimilation of Nitrogen from Ammonium Salts and Nitrate by Fungi   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
  1. The assimilation of inorganic nitrogen by Scopulariopsis brevicaulisand some physiologically similar species has been studied. Theirfailure to assimilate completely from ammonium sulphate hasbeen shown to be due to the fall in pH of the medium inducedby the initial uptake of ammonia.
  2. Complete assimilation ofammonia takes place in the presenceof the neutral salts ofeach of thirteen organic acids investigated.The organic acidsact primarily through their buffering effectwhich preventsor slows down the fall in pH. They are not specificallyrequiredfor ammonia assimilation by these fungi and can beeffectivelyreplaced by certain inorganic buffers.
  3. The influence of severalexternal factors on the rate of assimilationof ammonia, nitrate,and nitrite has been studied in S. brevicaulis.In correspondingconditions the mycelium assimilates ammoniamore rapidly thannitrate over a wide range of conditions.
  4. Ammonia, even invery low concentration, completely suppressesnitrate assimilationwhen both sources of nitrogen are presenttogether. Nitrite,however, is assimilated simultaneously withammonia. It is thereforeconcluded that ammonia blocks the reductionof nitrate to nitriteby the fungus.
  5. The suppression of nitrate assimilation inthe presence of ammoniais common to many mould fungi besidesS. brevicaulis, and isbelieved to have adaptive significancein natural habitats.
  6. The nitrate-reducing and assimilatingsystem is formed, evenwhen S. brevicaulis is grown in completeabsence of nitrate(ammonia medium with organic acid). It comesinto action rapidlywhen the inhibiting effect of ammonia isremoved. Similarly,nitrate-grown mycelium is capable of assimilatingammonia atmaximal rate without any adaptive lag.
