We report here a case of oral myiasis in the Republic of Korea. The patient was a 37-year-old man with a 30-year history of Becker''s muscular dystrophy. He was intubated due to dyspnea 8 days prior to admission to an intensive care unit (ICU). A few hours after the ICU admission, 43 fly larvae were found during suction of the oral cavity. All maggots were identified as the third instars of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) by morphology. We discussed on the characteristics of myiasis acquired in Korea, including the infection risk and predisposing factors.  相似文献

We describe here a rare case of traumatic myiasis occurred in August 2014, caused by an association of 2 Diptera species, Sarcophaga tibialis Macquart (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) and Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), in a domestic cat in northern Italy. Species identification was based on adult male morphology. The present case is the first report of S. tibialis as an agent of myiasis in Italy, and also the first ever report of myiasis caused by an association of S. tibialis and L. sericata. The cat developed an extensive traumatic myiasis in a large wound on the rump, which was treated pharmacologically and surgically. The biology, ecology, and distribution of S. tibialis and L. sericata are also discussed. A literature review is provided on cases of myiasis caused by S. tibialis, and cases of myiasis by L. sericata involving cats worldwide and humans and animals in Italy.  相似文献

This report describes the finding of Reighardia sp. (Pentastomida) infecting the air sac of two Belcher's gulls (Larus belcheri) found dead on the beaches of Pucusana, a district in southern Lima, Peru. Three pentastomes were collected from two Belcher's gulls. Then, they were morphologically and molecular analyzed. Molecular characterization of the parasite was achieved by amplifying a fragment of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rRNA). Based on both morphological and molecular data the pentastomes were identified as pentastomes of the genus Reighardia. This is the first report showing that the Belcher's gull is a new natural definitive host for this pentastome.  相似文献

Observations of foraging and diet for eight Passerine bird, two Anolis lizard, and one Ameiva lizard species in dry sclerophyll scrub on St. Eustatius (Neth. Antilles) show that none of the bird species competes as much with either anole as does the other anole, or the Ameiva. Anoles feed on insects, primarily on the ground and in low vegetation; on St. Eustatius no mainly insectivorous bird species feeds primarily in these places. Instead, the main presentday interaction between birds and anoles is predation. The abundant pearly-eyed thrasher (Margarops fuscatus) and the sparrow hawk (Falco sparverius) are the major predators on anoles. This predation has little effect on the niche relations of the anoles, according to a model for the coevolution of competing species.  相似文献

Chlamydiaceae are obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens for humans and animals. A recent study highlighted that a Chlamydiaceae intermediary between C. psittaci and C. abortus can infect hawks. Here, an isolate was obtained upon passage of cloacal and conjunctival sac material collected from a female hatch-year red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) in cultured cells. The diseased bird, one of 12 birds housed in a rehabilitation center, developed conjunctivitis and later died. Swabs from both sites tested positive for Chlamydia using the QuickVue Chlamydia test. The isolate, named RSHA, tested negative in qPCR assays specific for C. psittaci and C. abortus, respectively. Analysis of the 16S rRNA, 23S rRNA and whole genome sequences as well as MLST, ANIb and TETRA values reveal that C. psittaci and C. abortus are the closest relatives of RSHA. However, the overall results strongly suggest a phylogenetic intermediate position between these two species. Therefore, we propose the introduction of a new species designated Chlamydia buteonis with RSHAT as the type strain.  相似文献

Myiasis is a relatively common infection of animals kept as pets, although only 1 case of canine myiasis has been described so far in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we report an additional case of canine wound myiasis with identification of its causative agent, Lucilia sericata. An 8-year-old male Siberian husky dog was referred with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea to the Chungbuk National University Veterinary Medical Center, Cheongju-si (city), Chungcheongbuk-do (province), Korea in July 2013. Physical examination indicated the patient had a deep wound filled with a maggot swarm as a left gluteal lesion. A total of 216 maggots were removed by forceps, and the wounded area was sponged with gauzes and disinfected with 70% alcohol and a povidone-iodine solution. After daily care and suturing the wound, the patient was discharged at day 19 after admission. Recovered worms possessed morphological characteristics similar to those of L. sericata, namely, a sub-cylindrical body with 6–8 lobed anterior spiracles, round shaped with a button surrounded by a peritremal ring with no gaps, and similar distances between dorsal, median, and outer papillae of the 12th segment. Additionally, cox1 partial sequences (528 bp) obtained in the present study showed 100% identity with those of L. sericata (GenBank no. KT272854.1). L. sericata is indicated as a pathogen of myiasis infection not only in humans, but also in animals kept as pets in Korea.  相似文献

A total of 108 individuals from six different cultures found in the Department of Ica, Peru, were studied for the presence of Harris's Lines. Such lines or “bone scars” are formed due to cessation of bone growth due to episodes of starvation or illness and possibly other causes. These individuals covered a span of time of nearly 2,600 years. The individuals from mountain cultures had fewer lines and possibly a healthier childhood than those from coastal cultures. The modern population surveyed in this series still show a pattern of Harris's Lines similar to people from the Inca culture of 450 years ago.  相似文献

Gene duplications increase genetic and phenotypic diversity and occur in complex genomic regions that are still difficult to sequence and assemble. PHD Finger Protein 7 (PHF7) acts during spermiogenesis for histone-to-histone protamine exchange and is a determinant of male fertility in Drosophila and the mouse. We aimed to explore and characterise in the chicken genome the expanding family of the numerous orthologues of the unique mouse Phf7 gene (highly expressed in the testis), observing the fact that this information is unclear and/or variable according to the versions of databases. We validated nine primer pairs by in silico PCR for their use in screening the chicken bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library to produce BAC-derived probes to detect and localise PHF7-like loci by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH). We selected nine BAC that highlighted nine chromosomal regions for a total of 10 distinct PHF7-like loci on five Gallus gallus chromosomes: Chr1 (three loci), Chr2 (two loci), Chr12 (one locus), Chr19 (one locus) and ChrZ (three loci). We sequenced the corresponding BAC by using high-performance PacBio technology. After assembly, we performed annotation with the FGENESH program: there were a total of 116 peptides, including 39 PHF7-like proteins identified by BLASTP. These proteins share a common exon-intron core structure of 8–11 exons. Phylogeny revealed that the duplications occurred first between chromosomal regions and then inside each region. There are other duplicated genes in the identified BAC sequences, suggesting that these genomic regions exhibit a high rate of tandem duplication. We showed that the PHF7 gene, which is highly expressed in the rooster testis, is a highly duplicated gene family in the chicken genome, and this phenomenon probably concerns other bird species.  相似文献

We developed 26 Swainson's hawk (Buteo swainsoni) microsatellite primers from CA, AAT, CATC and GAGAA enriched genomic libraries. Primers were tested in 357 Swainson's hawks from western North America as well as seven other Buteo species. These markers will have broad application in investigations of Buteo population structure and genetic diversity.  相似文献

The blow fly genus Lucilia is composed largely of saprophages and facultative myasis agents, including the economically important species Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Lucilia sericata (Meigen). Only one species is generally recognized as an obligate agent of myiasis, Lucilia bufonivora Moniez, and this is an obligate parasite of toads. Lucilia silvarum (Meigen), a sister species, behaves mainly as a carrion breeder; however, it has also been reported as a facultative parasite of amphibians. Morphologically, these species are almost identical, and historically this has led to misidentification, taxonomic ambiguity and a paucity of studies of L. bufonivora. In this study, dipterous larvae were analysed from toad myiasis cases from the U.K., The Netherlands and Switzerland, together with adult specimens of fly species implicated in amphibian parasitism: L. bufonivora, L. silvarum and Lucilia elongata Shannon (from North America). Partial sequences of two genes, cox1 and ef1α, were amplified. Seven additional blow fly species were analysed as outgroups. Bayesian inference trees of cox1, ef1α and a combined‐gene dataset were constructed. All larvae isolated from toads were identified as L. bufonivora and no specimens of L. silvarum were implicated in amphibian myiasis. This study confirms L. silvarum and L. bufonivora as distinct sister species and provides unambiguous molecular identification of L. bufonivora.  相似文献

Historically, studies of reptilian thermal biology have compared ambient temperatures (Ta) to body temperatures (Tb) from the animal under study, with Tb usually taken from the cloaca and various instruments being used to measure Tb. The advent of surgically implanted miniature temperature loggers has offered the opportunity to test the efficacy of cloacal Tb as a measurement in thermoregulatory studies. We expected that there was a difference between skin, cloacal, and core Tb's. Temperatures were measured from various positions on leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis) using thermocouples and miniature temperature loggers, including surgically implanted temperature loggers. Measurements of temperature from various positions on and in the tortoise were significantly different from Ta. Cloacal Tb's were significantly lower than all other body temperatures measured, and core Tb's were significantly different from cloacal Tb, skin and carapace temperatures. In addition, significant differences were found between measures of temperature from other parts of the body. The variations between core Tb, cloacal Tb and other measures of Tb indicated that there are large thermal gradients within the body of a relatively large tortoise at any given time with cloacal Tb not an accurate measure of core Tb.  相似文献

When presented with odours on cotton swabs, adult borad-headed skinks (Eumeces laticeps) of both sexes flicked their tongues at much higher rates to conspecific odour stimuli than to those of their most closely related congeners, E. fasciatus and E. inexpectatus, during 60-s exposures to cloacal odours from lizards of the opposite sex. A successive discrimination design was used in which each lizard responded to five different odour treatments in a random sequence. In addition to the three lizard odours, water was used as a measure of baseline tongue protrusion rates and a cologne was used as a pungency control. There were no significant differences among the four non-conspecific odour treatments in numbers of tongue flicks elicited, but the skinks emitted significantly greater numbers of tongue flicks to conspecific cloacal odours than to any of the other stimuli. It is hypothesized that E. laticeps produces a pheromone which may function for species identification. Although it is tempting to speculate that the pheromone may serve as a pre-mating mechanism for maintaining reproductive isolation from syntopic congeners, insufficient information is avialable to draw firm conclusions regarding such a function.  相似文献

When birds are attacked by predators the initial take-off is crucial for survival. The strategy in the initial phase of predator evasion is probably affected by factors such as body mass and presence of cover and conspecifics, but it may also be a response to the character of the predator''s attack. In choosing an angle of flight, birds face a trade-off between climbing from the ground and accelerating across the ground. This is, to our knowledge, the first study investigating whether the attack trajectory of a raptor affects the take-off strategy of the prey bird. First-year male great tits (Parus major) adjusted take-off angle to a model predator''s angle of attack. Birds attacked from a steep angle took off at a lower angle than birds attacked from a low angle. We also compared take-offs at dawn and dusk but could not find any measurable effect of the diurnal body mass gain (on average 7.9%) in the great tits on either flight velocity or angle of ascent.  相似文献

The green anole (Anolis carolinensis) is an invasive lizard on the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. Green anoles have negatively impacted the native fauna, and thus, green anole eradication measures, such as the use of PTFE-sheet fencing to restrict their movement have been implemented. However, the effectiveness of fencing appears inadequate; therefore, new methods are needed to deter this species. In this study, we explored the use of aversive bioacoustics by testing whether green anoles froze or stayed away on being exposed to predatory sounds and heterospecific alarm calls. Green anoles showed longer freezing times on hearing bird calls than on hearing no sound or single tones. In addition, they stayed far from the audio sources playing the calls of the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) and alarm calls of the warbling white-eye (Zosterops japonicus). Our results suggest that green anoles avoid certain bioacoustics, especially the calls of B. jamaicensis and the alarm call of Z. japonicus. Hence, these bioacoustics can be used as an effective control method to restrict the invasion and dispersion of green anoles.  相似文献

Myiasis is usually caused by flies of the Calliphoridae family, and Cochliomyia hominivorax is the etiological agent most frequently found in myiasis. The first case of myiasis in a diabetic foot of a 54-year-old male patient in Argentina is reported. The patient attended the hospital of the capital city of Tucumán Province for a consultation concerning an ulcer in his right foot, where the larval specimens were found. The identification of the immature larvae was based on their morphological characters, such as the cylindrical, segmented, white yellow-coloured body and tracheas with strong pigmentation. The larvae were removed, and the patient was treated with antibiotics. The larvae were reared until the adults were obtained. The adults were identified by the setose basal vein in the upper surface of the wing, denuded lower surface of the wing, short and reduced palps, and parafrontalia with black hairs outside the front row of setae. The main factor that favoured the development of myiasis is due to diabetes, which caused a loss of sensibility in the limb that resulted in late consultation. Moreover, the poor personal hygiene attracted the flies, and the foul-smelling discharge from the wound favoured the female''s oviposition. There is a need to implement a program for prevention of myiasis, in which the population is made aware not only of the importance of good personal hygiene and home sanitation but also of the degree of implication of flies in the occurrence and development of this disease.  相似文献

The W chromosome of the fishes Characidium cf. fasciatum, Characidium sp. and Characidium cf. gomesi is heterochromatic, as is usually seen in most Characidium species. Samples of W-chromatin were collected by mechanical microdissection and amplified by DOP-PCR (degenerate oligonucleotide-primed polymerase chain reaction), to be used as painting probes (DCg and CgW) and for sequence analysis. FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) with DCg probe painted the whole W chromosome, the pericentromeric region of Z chromosomes and the terminal region of B chromosomes. DOP-PCR-generated fragments were cloned, sequenced and tested by in situ hybridization, but only CgW4 produced positive hybridization signals. Clone sequence analysis recovered seven distinct sequences, of which six did not reveal any similarity to other known sequences in the GenBank or GIRI databases. Only CgW9 clone sequence was recognized as probably derived from a Helitron-transposon similar to that found in the genome of the zebrafish Danio rerio. Our results show that the composition of Characidium’s W chromosome does seem rich in repetitive sequences as well as other W chromosomes found in several species with a ZW sex-determining mechanism.  相似文献

The collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) and the pied flycatcher (F. hypoleuca) hybridize where their geographic ranges overlap. Restriction fragment comparison of 5% of the mitochondrial genome showed a sequence divergence of 10% between these flycatcher species. This degree of sequence divergence between a closely related pair of bird species is unusually high and contrasts with the low level of divergence between F. albicollis and F. hypoleuca in nuclear genes (Nei's D = 0.0006) revealed by enzyme electrophoresis. The low nuclear differentiation is explained by sex biassed gene flow and introgression in nuclear genes (via fertile male hybrids), while the high mitochondrial DNA sequence divergence is preserved by sterility of female hybrids, which prevents mitochondrial introgression. This pattern is in accordance with Haldane's rule and is supported by field data on hybrid fertility. The high mtDNA differentiation could be explained by transfer of mitochondrial DNA from a third species during a past period of hybridization.  相似文献

Two new species of the oribatid mite superfamily Trizetoidea (Acari, Oribatida) are described from Peru. Rhynchoribates (Rhynchoribatodes) rioyuyapichisensis Ermilov, sp. n. differs from the other species of the subgenus by the long flagelliform notogastral setae. Rhynchoppia puertoincaensis Ermilov, sp. n. is morphologically similar to R. capillata (Balogh, 1963), but differs by the shape and in a greater number of rostral teeth, in the number and a smaller length of notogastral setae, and in the number of genital setae. The genus Rhynchoppia (Balogh 1968) is recorded from the Neotropical Region for the first time, while Rhynchoribates (Rhynchoribatodes) brasiliensis Woas 1986 is new to the fauna of Peru.  相似文献
