To simultaneously determine clinical and immunological responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in young and old females and males, 681 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and 369 normal controls (NCs) were analyzed based on age and sex classifications using multiple linear regression analysis. Compared to the age-matched NCs, both young and old male and female non-comorbid COVID-19 patients had lower lymphocyte counts and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) concentration, and only young male and female patients had lower neutrophil counts. Compared to young patients, both old males and females had significantly higher plasma ALT and AST concentrations. Compared to young and old females, age-matched males had higher plasma ALT and AST concentrations, but only young males had higher C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. Compared to females, old males, but not young males, showed higher incidence of critical illness. Compared to young patients, old females had more leukocyte and neutrophil counts above the normal upper limit and B cell count below the normal lower limit (NLL), while old males had more lymphocyte and natural killer (NK) cell counts below the NLL. No sex or age associations with B cell and NK cell counts were observed. However, there were age-dependent decreases in CD8+ T-cell counts in both male and female COVID-19 patients. Age was negatively associated with CD8+ T cell counts but positively associated with neutrophil count, CRP, ALT, and AST concentrations, and sex (females) was negatively associated with neutrophil count, CRP, ALT, and AST concentrations. The present study suggests that SARS-CoV-2 infection mainly induced 1) beneficial sex (female)-related differences regarding reduced COVID-19 disease severity and negative associations with inflammatory responses and liver damage, and 2) harmful age-related differences relating to negative associations with CD8+ T cell count and positive associations with inflammatory responses and liver damage. Thus, sex and age are biological variables that should be considered in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.  相似文献

To investigate if severe malarial anemia is associated with specific cytokine overproduction, we evaluated serum levels of soluble Fas ligand (sFasL), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) from three groups of young children with Plasmodium falciparum infection (asymptomatic cases, uncomplicated malaria cases and severe malarial anemia cases), in a hyperendemic area of Gabon. In uncomplicated cases, only TNF levels were significantly (p < 0.001) increased in comparison to asymptomatic cases with P. falciparum infection. High levels of sFasL, TNF-alpha and IL-10 were associated with low hemoglobin concentrations, sFasL levels were significantly higher in children with severe malarial anemia (p < 0.001) as compared to both other groups. The parasite density was positively correlated with IL-10, TNF-alpha and sFasL levels. TNF-alpha and sFasL, but not IL-10 or parasitemia, were independent predictors of hemoglobin concentrations. These results suggest that, in malaria, a specific dysregulation of the cytokine balance may lead to complications such as severe anemia.  相似文献

In 14141 male and 14141 female Greek children and adolescents ranging in age between seven and fifteen years the presence of cheek dimples was investigated. Neither sex (12.6% in both female and males) nor side differences when expressed unilaterally were observed. There was however a significant increase of dimples with age as well as significantly higher numbers of asymmetric than symmetric expressions in all age groups. With respect to these observations hypotheses of origin of cheek dimples and related effects of age are discussed.  相似文献

Enzyme activities of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) toward five different substrates (benzalacetone (PBO), styrene oxide (STOX), sulfobromophthalein (BSP), 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene (DCNB) and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB)) as well as concentrations of four subunits of GST isozymes (1, 2, 3 and 4) were determined using cytosol fractions obtained from livers of young (6 months) and old (26 months) Fischer-344 rats of both sexes. Values for enzyme activities for three substrates (DCNB, BSP and PBO) in young male rats were significantly higher than the corresponding values in female rats. In old male rats, values were generally lower than the corresponding values in young male rats, becoming close to corresponding values in young female rats. Old female rats, however, exhibited values close to those in young female rats, except for DCNB and STOX values, which were slightly lower in old female rats. GST subunits 3 and 4, as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography after purification by affinity chromatography using S-hexyl-glutathione, were predominant in young males, whereas concentrations of subunits 1 and 2 were higher in females than in males. In male rat livers, concentrations of subunits 3 and 4 decreased considerably with age while those of subunits 1 and 2 increased, so that the subunit pattern in old male rats tended to be similar to that of young female rats. In old females, a decrease in the concentration of subunits 3 and 4 and an increase in the concentration of subunit 1 were also observed as in old male rats, while the subunit 2 concentration tended to decline. Furthermore, the elution pattern of affinity chromatography changed with age, yielding an earlier elution of most subunits in old male rats and of subunit 1 in old female rats. The results suggest that age-related changes that occur with GSTs in livers of male rats are essentially a feminization of the isozyme pattern. However, despite rather unremarkable changes in enzyme activities with age in females, considerable changes of subunit pattern (a general decrease in concentration of subunits 2, 3 and 4 and an increase in the concentration of subunit 1) were also observed in female rats, and these were much greater than could be predicted from enzyme activity changes with age in this sex.  相似文献

Differences among females in infant survival can contribute substantially to variance in fitness. Infant survival is a product of external risk factors and investment by kin, especially the mother, and is thus closely tied with the evolution of behavior and life history. Here we present a 9-yr study (2004–2012) of infant survival and sex ratio relative to age and dominance ranks of mothers and the presence of immigrant males in a free-ranging population of gray-cheeked mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We consider immigrant males because they are known to increase infant mortality in several other species. We found that infants of older mothers had higher survival than those of younger mothers but that high rank did not confer a significant benefit on infant survival. Female infants had higher survival than male infants. Young, low-ranking females had more male infants than young, high-ranking females, which had slightly more daughters, but this difference declined as females aged because low-ranking females had more daughters as they aged. With limited data, we found a significant relationship between the presence of male immigrants and infant mortality (falls and unexplained disappearances) to 18 mo. Our results suggest that infant survival in gray-cheeked mangabeys is most precarious when mothers must allocate energy to their own growth as well as to their infants, that sons of young mothers are at greatest risk, and that immigrant males can negatively affect infant survival.  相似文献

The behavioral interactions of 22 infant and mother Japanese macaques with other group members were studied. Focal-animal observations were made from the time of each infant’s birth until 1 year of age. Infants and mothers both displayed exceedingly strong preferences for associating with matrilineal kin and, specifically, for female kin. The degree of genetic relatedness was positively correlated with levels of spatial proximity, contact, grooming, aggression, and play. Overall frequencies of interactions with nonkin were very low, and partner sex was not an important factor in interactions with nonkin. There were no significant differences between male and female infants in interactions with kin versus nonkin. There was only one significant difference between male and female infants in interactions with males versus females: female infants showed stronger preferences for initiating proximity with females over males than did male infants. Because mothers provide the focal point for infant interactions during the first year of life, we compared the behavior of infants and mothers. Mothers were the recipients of more social interactions than were infants, mothers engaged in more grooming than did infants, and infants engaged in more social play than did mothers. These findings are only partially consistent with kin-selection theory, and the inadequacies of studying matrilineal kin discrimination to test kin selection are reviewed. The near-absence of infant sex differences in associations with social partners suggests that although maternal kin other than the mother are important to infant socialization, they probably do not contribute to the development of behavioral sex differences until after the first year of life.  相似文献

Schistosoma mansoni: male-biased sex ratios in snails and mice   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Adult sex ratios of Schistosoma mansoni, in mice, were shown to be biased toward males (3:1) despite the finding that sex ratios of miracidia were 50:50. The adult male bias was caused by greater male infectivity of miracidia for snails and cercariae for mice. A significantly higher percentage of male miracidia developed to cercarial production in unimiracidial infections (57 male, 34 female), and a significantly higher percentage of male cercariae developed to adulthood in mice (143 male, 79 female worms resulted from 900 male and 900 female cercariae). No significant differences were found between male and female parasites for longevity of miracidia (both sexes, 10 hr) and cercariae (males 21.3 +/- 5.75 hr, females 25.0 +/- 7.02 hr), prepatent periods in snail hosts (male 34 +/- 2.92 days, females 33 +/- 2.36 days), longevity of snail infections (males 96.6 +/- 25.15 days, females 115.2 +/- 82.43 days), and the numbers of cercariae produced per snail lifetime (males 30,751.44 +/- 18,064.33, females 34,083.00 +/- 33,732.82). Present results provide a better understanding of the life cycle of S. mansoni, are of theoretical significance for theories of biased sex ratios (which at present cannot account for the male-biased ratio of S. mansoni), and also suggest that schistosomiasis transmission models assuming a 50:50 sex ratio at all stages of the life cycle should be reassessed.  相似文献

Based on the hypothesis that unobtrusively measured viewing time reflects sexual interest, it was predicted that viewing times should correlate with ratings of sexual attractiveness and with phallometrically measured age and gender preferences. Four additional predictions were derived from the Symons (1979) evolutionary theory of human mate preferences: (1) male and female subjects should view slides of young adults of the opposite sex longest and adults of the same sex and prepubescent children of both sexes the shortest, (2) the correlation between viewing time and sexual attractiveness ratings should be higher among males than females (3) males should look at slides of pubescent females longer than females look at slides of pubescent males, and (4) males should look longer at adult females than females look at adult males. Two studies involving 24 heterosexual females and 58 heterosexual males provided statistically significant support for all predictions except the last one.  相似文献

The data of this study, an extension of a previous study on secondary sex ratio in the human population of Muridke, Punjab, Pakistan, are based on the population of Muridke, 27 km north of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Records of deaths of children, at later stages of birth, for different birth ranks, and that of maternal and paternal ages were made. 1000 families were scored for this study. Families providing the required information were included. Data for paternal age and maternal age combination consisted of 4807 total number of children of which 2586 were male. Paternal age and birth order combination was comprised of a total of 4405 children, containing 2316 males. Maternal age and birth order combination consisted of 4658 children, of which 2458 were males. The discrepancy in the number of children in the 3 types of combinations was due to the lack of required information in different groups. Sex ratio based on total number of males in relation to paternal age and maternal age was 0.54. Younger fathers (15-19 years) showed higher sex ratio (0.69). This dropped in paternal age groups 20-24 years (0.59) and 25-29 years (0.51). Younger mothers (15-19 years) showed higher sex ratio (0.62), declines in the age groups 20-24 years (0.52) and 25-29 years (0.51) and rise in age groups 35-39 years (0.55) and 40-44 years (0.54). Chi-square tests were carried out to compare the number of male and female offspring in the paternal age groups 15-19, 20-24, and 25-29 years. These showed highly significant deviation from the expected number. The higher age groups showed nonsignificant differences in the number of male and female offspring. Maternal age groups 15-19, 20-24, and 25-29 years showed highly significant differences in the male and female offspring and nonsignificant results in the higher age groups. Maternal age in relation to paternal age showed positive simple and partial correlations. Sex ratio for the total number of males based on paternal age and birth order was 0.52. 1st birth order showed higher sex ratio (0.55) and decreased in the 2nd (0.50) and 3rd birth orders (0.51), showed increase in the 4th birth order (0.53) and declines in the higher birth ranks. The number of male and female offspring in the birth orders 1, 2, and 3 showed significant differences, but in higher birth ranks the difference was insignificant. Paternal age and birth order indicated positive simple and partial correlations. Higher sex ratio (0.58) was seen in the 1st birth order and then it decreased in the 2nd (0.50) and 3rd (0.51) birth order. Chi-square tests carried out to compare the number of male and female offspring in borth orders 1, 2, and 3 showed highly significant differences but in higher birth ranks the difference was insignificant.  相似文献

The concentration of the cytosolic glucocorticoid receptor (GR) was determined in skeletal muscles of calves in order to study possible differences in individual muscles from different parts of the body as well as the influence of sex and breed. In male and female Simmental calves the topographical distribution of GR was similar: the lowest concentrations were seen in abdominal muscle, whereas in neck, shoulder and hindleg the GR concentrations were higher; this difference was more pronounced in male than in female calves. In general, female calves had about 2-fold higher GR concentrations than males. The cytosolic cortisol concentrations were differing neither between individual muscles nor between sexes. The cortisol secretion during a 24-h sampling period 1 week prior to slaughter showed no sex difference. GR concentrations in neck muscle of female calves of four different German cattle breeds (Holstein Friesian, Brown Swiss, Simmental and German Gelbvieh) were rather similar; however, when Brown Swiss with the highest GR levels were compared to Holstein Friesian calves with the lowest concentrations, a significant difference was evident (P < 0.05).  相似文献

I discuss newborn baboon behavioral and proximity sex differences in a population of captive olive baboons (Papio anubis) living in a social group of >500 individuals. The data are based upon 20-min focal observations of 42 mother-newborn pairs (n = 27, n = 15) for infant-days 1–7 and 36 pairs (n = 23, n = 13) for infant-days 8–14 collected late-May through late-November 2001. I examined the first two weeks of infant life via behavioral, proximity, and approach-leave/contact analyses in order to determine whether behavioral sex differences exist during the first few days of life. I examine and analyze these 2 weeks independently due to different sample sizes. I used data from the total available sample population of 57 infants (n = 36, n = 21) to discuss birth, survivorship, and infant weight. Statistically significant age and/or age-sex interactions exist for all of the behavior and proximity measures during either infant-week 1 or 2. Moreover, there is a statistically significant difference in the birth sex ratio in the sample population but no significant difference in infant mortality by sex. There are also relative and significant differences in mothers' treatment of their newborn males and females. There are also some general tendencies for female newborns on average to suckle less and to explore more per focal observation than male infants do as they age. Conversely, male newborns average slightly more time per focal observation 1 m from the mother than do female infants. However, the observed differences may be influenced by maternal behavior in that mothers have higher rates of contact with their female than their male infants.  相似文献

Mammalian play is believed to improve motor skills as well as facilitate the development of social relationships. Given the marked sexual dimorphism in gorilla body size and the role assumed by the male in protecting the group from conspecifics and predators, the motor-training hypothesis of play predicts that male infants should exhibit higher frequencies of social play than female infants, and that males should prefer to play with other males. Given that adult female gorillas are strongly attracted to adult breeding males and form only weak social bonds with unrelated adult females, the social-relationship hypothesis of play predicts that female infants should prefer to play with males. These hypotheses were tested in a 22-month study of 12 gorilla infants, aged between 0-5 years, living in three zoological parks in Chicago and Atlanta. Consistent with the hypotheses, male infants played more than female infants did, and both male and female infants preferred to play with males rather than with females. These findings suggest that sex differences in play in the great apes and other primates can be predicted by the characteristics of adult behavior and social structure above and beyond the patterns of sex-biased dispersal or coalition formation with same-sex kin.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the basic haematological parameters in feral and racing pigeons and to compare these parameters according to age, sex and season in healthy feral pigeons as well as between Chlamydophila-serologically positive and negative feral pigeons. Red blood cells (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), mean cell volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), white blood count (WBC), thrombocyte count and differential WBC, were determined in 366 pigeons (Columba livia forma domestica) captured in the City of Zagreb between 1999 and 2002. Of these, 232 feral (179 adult and 53 juvenile, 104 male and 75 female) and 57 racing pigeons (25 male and 32 female) were clinically healthy and bacteriologically and serologically negative, but 77 birds had antibody titres against Chlamydophila sp. Significantly lower values of RBC, PCV, Hb, MCH, WBC and thrombocyte (P<0.05) were observed in young compared to adult pigeons, while the differences in MCV and MCH were not significant between age classes. In differential WBC of young pigeons, a significantly higher percentage of heterophils, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes and a significantly smaller percentage of lymphocytes (P<0.01) was found than in adult pigeons. Significant sex-related differences were seen only in MCV values and in the percentage of lymphocytes (higher in females) and neutrophils (higher in males). PCV, Hb, MCV and MCH increased, while WBC decreased during wintertime (P<0.05). In differential WBC, percentage of heterophils was low in summer and autumn. At the same time, a higher percentage of basophils was found. Low numbers of monocytes were found in summer and low values of eosinophils in winter. In racing pigeons, values of eosinophils and basophils were significantly lower than in feral pigeons. Pigeons which had antibodies against Chlamydophila sp. possessed a higher percentage of monocytes and less lymphocytes than sero-negative animals, while WBC was significant lower than in sero-negative feral pigeons.  相似文献

Observations of age-sex class associations of three young female and five young male bonnet macaques born in the spring, 1975, were taken semiannually over three years beginning in the fall, 1975. Analysis reveals several patterns: (1) both males and females show continuous decline in association with age mates; (2) solitary time of females peaks at 1.5 years after which they begin to associate with adult females; (3) solitary time of males peaks at 2.5 years after which they associate predominantly with sub-adult males; (4) both males and females showed higher association with juveniles of the same sex than of opposite sex; and (5) both males and females showed annual cycles of association with some age-sex classes. These results are best understood with reference to the natural breeding cycle of the animals and the different life histories of male and female macaques in the wild.  相似文献

In sexually dimorphic mammals, high population density is commonly associated with increased mortality of males relative to females and with female-biased adult sex ratios. This paper investigates the consequences of these changes on the distribution of male breeding success, the intensity of competition for females and the opportunity for sexual selection. After the red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) population of the North Block of Rum (Inner Hebrides) was released from culling, female numbers rose and male numbers declined, leading to an adult sex ratio of around one male to two females. This change was the result of increased mortality of males relative to females during the first two years of life; of increased emigration rates by young males; and of reduced immigration by males from outside the study area. The increasing bias in the adult sex ratio affected the timing of breeding as well as the distribution of mating success in males. As the adult sex ratio became increasingly biased towards females, the degree of skew in mating success (calculated across all harem-holders) increased, but mature males defended harems for shorter periods and a higher proportion of males held harems. In addition, a higher proportion of calves were fathered by immigrant males and the proportion fathered by males born in the study area declined. These results support the contention that, where high population density is associated with a female-biased adult sex ratio, competition for mates is likely to decline.  相似文献

Most primates are characterized by cohesive male–female bonds that are maintained year round. While recent studies have addressed the selective pressures influencing the evolution of male–female relationships in primates, we know relatively little about the proximate mechanisms affecting them. It has been demonstrated that newborn white‐faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) attract the attention of other group members and this may be an important mechanism influencing male–female relationships. We studied two groups of C. capucinus in the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, between February and July 2007. A total of 348 hr of focal data were collected on all adult males (n=6) residing in each of the study groups. During our study, 13 of the 14 group females were either pregnant or lactating, and 9 infants were born. We calculated an average daily affiliation rate between all group males combined and each adult female four weeks before and four weeks after the birth of her infant. Repeated measures ANOVAs revealed no significant changes in affiliation following infant births (F=2.262, df=1, P<0.176). Results remained nonsignificant for rank (F=1.550, df=1, P<0.260) and group membership (F=0.729, df=1, P<0.429). Infant sex was the only variable with a significant effect on affiliation rates between males and females (F=10.020, df=1, P<0.019). Adult males increased their affiliation with all adult females that gave birth to male infants (n=4), while their rates decreased with all but one of the adult females with female infants (n=4). While preliminary, these results indicate that the adult males may cultivate relationships with other males at a young age. Am. J. Primatol. 71:380–383, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Humans living in areas of high malaria transmission gradually acquire, during the early years of life, protective clinical immunity to Plasmodium falciparum, limiting serious complications of malaria to young children. However, pregnant women become more susceptible to severe P. falciparum infections during their first pregnancy. Pregnancy associated malaria is coupled with massive accumulation of parasitised erythrocytes and monocytes in the placental intervillous blood spaces, contributing to disease and death in pregnant women and developing infants. Indirect evidence suggests that prevention may be possible by vaccinating women of childbearing age before their first pregnancy. This review aims to introduce the reader to the implications of malaria infection during pregnancy and to analyse recent findings towards the identification and characterisation of parasite encoded erythrocyte surface proteins expressed in malaria-infected pregnant women that are likely targets of protective immunity and have potential for vaccine development.  相似文献

Models of age-related mate choice predict female preference for older males as they have proven survival ability. However, these models rarely address differences in sperm age and male mating history when evaluating the potential benefits to females from older partners. We used a novel experimental design to assess simultaneously the relative importance of these three parameters in the hide beetle, Dermestes maculatus. In a two-part experiment we first explored age-related male mating success and subsequently examined the consequences of male age, sperm age and male mating history on female fecundity and fertilization success. In a competitive mating environment, intermediate-age males gained significantly higher mating success than younger or older males. To test the consequences for females of aged-related male mating success, a second set of females were mated to males varying in age (young, intermediate-age and old), in numbers of matings and in timing of the most recent mating. We found that male age had a significant impact on female fecundity and fertilization success. Females mated to intermediate-age males laid more eggs and attained consistently higher levels of fertilization success than females with young and old mates. A male's previous mating history determined his current reproductive effort; virgin males spent longer in copula than males with prior mating opportunities. However, differences in copulation duration did not translate into increased fecundity or fertilization success. There was also little evidence to suggest that fertilization success was dependent on the age of a male's sperm. The experiment highlights the potential direct benefits accrued by females through mating with particular aged males. Such benefits are largely ignored by traditional viability models of age-related male mating success.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory offspring of wild-caught voles Clethrionomys glareolus and Microtus agrestis, bred for 1 year under constant conditions, were examined with regard to sex ratios and weights at weaning and at 2 months of age. C. glareolus exhibits female territoriality and M. agrestis male territoriality in summer. The adults die away in late summer-autumn. Early-summer young mature in the year of birth but late-summer young do not reach maturity until the following year. C. glareolus young showed a male bias in early summer and a female bias in late summer. Conditions were the opposite but less clear in M. agrestis. C. glareolus males grew comparatively faster than M. agrestis males and showed a markedly higher early summer male: female weight ratio at 2 months of age. Maternal investment thus appears clearly related to the social system; the sex with the largest number and highest quality of young was that which was not limited in number by territoriality. However, the investment depended also on the time until maturation of the young.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Obesity is a chronic disease that is characterized by increased body fat owing to imbalance between consumed and expended energy. Inflammation generally is accompanied by accumulation of excess lipid in adipose tissue and liver. High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) participates in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. We investigated the relation of the number of HMGB1 positive cells to body mass index (BMI), liver inflammation and the number of Kupffer cells. We divided 18 female Wistar albino rats into two groups: group 1, untreated control fed normal commercial rat diet and group 2, obese rats fed a special diet containing 40% fat. The plasma concentrations of cholesterol, glucose, superoxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) and catalase activities were measured for all animals. The numbers of hepatocytes, Kupffer cells and HMGB1 positive cells were counted using stereological methods. The mean numbers of Kupffer cells and HMGB1 positive cells were higher for group 2 than for group 1. The concentrations of plasma cholesterol and glucose levels also were higher in group 2. Plasma levels of SOD and catalase were significantly lower in group 2 compared to group 1. The number of HMGB1 cells was related directly to BMI and inflammation. The role of HMGB1 was demonstrated for the liver of the obese group. We demonstrated the relations among HMGB1, BMI, obesity and inflammation.  相似文献
