This paper describes the phenological growth stages of olive trees using the BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt, Chemische Industrie) scale. Eight principal growth stages for bud, leaf and shoot development, inflorescence emergence, flowering, fruit development, fruit maturity and senescence and 32 secondary growth stages are described. Advantages of the BBCH scale over other methods are discussed.  相似文献

Ulvan, carrageenan, alginate and laminarin were tested in olive trees’ twigs to elicit phenolic metabolism and control verticillium wilt of olive (VWO) caused by Verticillium dahliae. The elicitation effect was determined through phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, total polyphenol content and lignin content. VWO was assessed in twigs previously elicited (24?h) and maintained in a solution containing bio-elicitors (2?g/L) and conidial suspension (106?conidia/mL). Our results showed stimulation of the phenolic metabolism and the decline of wilt symptoms. Ulvan reduced significantly the area under the disease progress curve for severity to 39.9% and the final incidence to 28.9%. Ulvan and alginate produced significant inhibitory rates on mycelial growth of the fungus in vitro. Seaweed polysaccharides might help to overcome VWO by strengthening the host defense metabolism and restricting the pathogen’s growth.  相似文献

Large old trees are some of the most iconic biota on earth and are integral parts of many terrestrial ecosystems including those in tropical, temperate and boreal forests, deserts, savannas, agro‐ecological areas, and urban environments. In this review, we provide new insights into the ecology, function, evolution and management of large old trees through broad cross‐disciplinary perspectives from literatures in plant physiology, growth and development, evolution, habitat value for fauna and flora, and conservation management. Our review reveals that the diameter, height and longevity of large old trees varies greatly on an inter‐specific basis, thereby creating serious challenges in defining large old trees and demanding an ecosystem‐ and species‐specific definition that will only rarely be readily transferable to other species or ecosystems. Such variation is also manifested by marked inter‐specific differences in the key attributes of large old trees (beyond diameter and height) such as the extent of buttressing, canopy architecture, the extent of bark micro‐environments and the prevalence of cavities. We found that large old trees play an extraordinary range of critical ecological roles including in hydrological regimes, nutrient cycles and numerous ecosystem processes. Large old trees strongly influence the spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of individuals of the same species and populations of numerous other plant and animal species. We suggest many key characteristics of large old trees such as extreme height, prolonged lifespans, and the presence of cavities – which confer competitive and evolutionary advantages in undisturbed environments – can render such trees highly susceptible to a range of human influences. Large old trees are vulnerable to threats ranging from droughts, fire, pests and pathogens, to logging, land clearing, landscape fragmentation and climate change. Tackling such diverse threats is challenging because they often interact and manifest in different ways in different ecosystems, demanding targeted species‐ or ecosystem‐specific responses. We argue that novel management actions will often be required to protect existing large old trees and ensure the recruitment of new cohorts of such trees. For example, fine‐scale tree‐level conservation such as buffering individual stems will be required in many environments such as in agricultural areas and urban environments. Landscape‐level approaches like protecting places where large old trees are most likely to occur will be needed. However, this brings challenges associated with likely changes in tree distributions associated with climate change, because long‐lived trees may presently exist in places unsuitable for the development of new cohorts of the same species. Appropriate future environmental domains for a species could exist in new locations where it has never previously occurred. The future distribution and persistence of large old trees may require controversial responses including assisted migration via seed or seedling establishment in new locales. However, the effectiveness of such approaches may be limited where key ecological features of large old trees (such as cavity presence) depend on other species such as termites, fungi and bacteria. Unless other species with similar ecological roles are present to fulfil these functions, these taxa might need to be moved concurrently with the target tree species.  相似文献

Several ancient olive plants with different genetic, agronomic and morphological characteristics are widespread in the Emilia-Romagna region. In this study, details of 206 trees located in four provinces were collected and their phytometric traits were recorded. Easily recognizable varieties were identified, while plants of uncertain genetic identity were submitted for molecular analysis with SSR markers and compared with cultivars widespread in central Italy and Emilia-Romagna. The genetic analyses showed that most of the ancient olive trees belonged to 10 cultivars that are already characterized, with different cases of intra-varietal clones. The remaining accessions belonged to 19 different genotypes of unknown origin. The highest percentage of policormic trees was found in the Bologna and Rimini provinces. A high percentage of plants located under unfavourable aspects (west to east) was found only in the Rimini territory, which presents peculiar and milder climatic conditions compared to the other provinces. Slope appeared not to be a limiting factor for tree survival. The information obtained could help the rational reintroduction of olive growing in suitable areas of Emilia-Romagna, with the subsequent economic advantages, erosion preservation and germplasm enrichment.  相似文献

Soil boron occurring in various forms was correlated with boron contents in the leaves of olive trees in 51 and in barley leaves in 20 soils. The amounts of boron: in soil solution (CwsB), non specifically adsorbed (NsaB), specifically adsorbed (SaB), occluded in Mn oxides (MnoB), occluded in amorphous Fe-Al oxyhydroxides (FeoB), were correlated with soil properties such as: organic matter content, pH, free aluminum and iron oxyhydroxides (Ald, Fed), amorphous aluminum and iron oxyhydroxides (Alo, Feo). The later correlation studies were conducted on a total number of 153 soil samples inclusive of the soils used for the plant uptake investigations. The results show that the boron contents in the leaves of olive trees were significantly correlated with FeoB, CwsB, SaB and MnoB but with CwsB, NsaB, SaB and FeoB in barley leaves. The respective correlation coefficients suggest that available forms of soil boron vary with plant species. The hot water soluble boron was significantly correlated with all the fractions of boron studied except MnoB, confirming its value as a measure of available soil boron. However, the non significant (a=0.05) correlation with MnoB, which show significant correlation with the contents in the leaves of olive trees and barley, suggest that this procedure does not extract significant amounts of available B held in Mn oxyhydroxides. The highest amount of CwsB originated from the Cws B and to a lesser degree from the SaB and NsaB. The correlation among the boron held in the forms studied and the selected soil properties were either no significant or significant with the highest correlation found between FeoB and pH and Feo.  相似文献

Drought resistance was examined for 2-year-old saplings of Ceratonia siliqua L., Olea oleaster Hoffmgg. et Link., Quercus suber L. and Q. pubescens Willd. growing in the field in Sicily, with the aim of testing their possible use in the reforestation of degraded areas. To this purpose, leaf conductance to water vapour (g L), transpiration rate (E L), relative water content (RWC) and water potential (L) were measured between pre-dawn and sunset, monthly from May to November. Parallel measurements of loss of hydraulic conductance of twigs of the current year (PLC) were made together with an estimate of whole-plant hydraulic conductance (K PLANT) on the basis of the ratio of maximum E L to (PD-MIN), where PD is pre-dawn L and MIN is the minimum diurnal L. C. siliqua saplings maintained high g L throughout the study period with high RWC (over 90%) and L. They grew rapidly and increased their foliage area (A L) by over 60% from May to winter rest. This was accompanied by low twig PLC (about 20% in September) resulting in high K PLANT all through the study period. In contrast, O. oleaster saplings underwent distinct dehydration in July, i.e. they showed stomatal closure due to a drop in RWC (to 75%) and L (to the turgor-loss point). This was apparently due to twig cavitation, resulting in a strong decrease of K PLANT. Plants, however, tolerated summer drought, and showed growth (A L increased by 15% from May to November). Saplings of Q. suber and Q. pubescens were much more vulnerable to twig cavitation (PLC was 35–48% from June to November) than the other two species, and their average K PLANT was lower. Saplings of Q. suber and Q. pubescens grew only during the wet spring period, and no new foliage was produced thereafter. Changes in twig hydraulic conductance played a dominant role in determining changes in K PLANT in that the two variables were well correlated to each other (r=0.68 for P=0.001). We conclude that C. siliqua is an ideal candidate for reforestation of Sicilian degraded areas as is O. oleaster that, however, requires some additional water supply in the summer, at least during the early years after plantation. In wetter locations of Sicily, to an altitude between 0 and 500 m, Q. suber and Q. pubescens can be used for reforestation with expected higher competitiveness of the latter over the former species.  相似文献

Trees can reach ages that in some cases amount to thousands of years. In the Mediterranean region, olive trees (Olea europaea) have traditionally been considered a particularly long-lived species. The main objective of this study was to assess the age of large olive trees considered to be millenarian and classified as monumental trees in northeastern Spain. We extracted cores of 14 individuals and obtained 8 sections of trees which had already been cut in the area where the largest olive trees in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula are found. The age of the sampled olive trees was assessed by counting the number of annual growth rings. Tree rings did not cross-date well, neither within nor between individuals, but boundaries between likely annual rings were clearly distinct. We found a linear relationship between DBH and tree age (in years) (Age = 2.11 × diameter(cm) + 88.93, R2 = 0.80), which was used to estimate the age of unsampled olive trees. The maximum estimated age (627 ± 110 years) is among the greatest ages reported for olive trees around the world (700 years) and among the oldest trees in Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary Trunk circumferences were measured on apple trees which had been grown for 5 to 10 years on land previously in apple orchard. Soil beneath each tree was analysed for soil acidity characteristics and basic cations. Tree growth (trunk circumference), was generally retarded but highly variable, but correlated well with the soil measurements in four of the six orchards investigated. Size of Delicious, Tydeman and Rome Beauty cultivars correlated positively with soil pH and negatively with 0.02M CaCl2-soluble Al and Mn, while that of McIntosh grown adjacent to the Delicious and Tydeman trees in two of those orchards correlated little or not at all with these soil acidity characteristics. However, in the three orchards where McIntosh trees were grown, their size correlated (r=0.72**, 0.71**, 0.54**) well with exchangeable soil Mg. The effects of soil acidity and associated nutrient deficiencies on growth of young apple trees is discussed.Contribution No. 602.  相似文献

Woody species populating the major Mediterranean ecosystems in the world are characterized by different levels of adaptation to the seasonal Mediterranean climate conditions. Many species of these ecosystems show wood features that allow high efficiency of transport when water is available, while maintaining hydraulic safety during drought periods. This study focuses on the anatomy of juvenile and mature wood of some species representative of continuous sequences of Mediterranean vegetation formations according to gradients of water availability, from xeric to relatively mesic: Cistus monspeliensis L., Rhamnus alaternus L., Myrtus communis L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Olea europaea L., Quercus ilex L., Fraxinus ornus L. and Ostrya carpinifolia L. Twigwood collected in Southern Italy was anatomically compared with the stemwood of the same species represented in the reference slide collection of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands (Lw). The “hydraulic distance” between the wood of main stems and twigs was estimated on the basis of suites of anatomical features related to water efficiency/safety. Although some attributes (i.e. porosity and type of imperforate tracheary elements) were similar in young twigs and older rings, other traits (i.e. vessel frequency and size) evidenced the different hydraulic properties of twig and stemwood. The difference between juvenile and mature structures was large in the species of the mesic end of the gradient while it was relatively small in those more xeric. This tendency is in agreement with the habit gradient from medium-sized trees to small evergreen/drought deciduous shrubs according to decreasing water availability in Mediterranean vegetation types.  相似文献

The construction cost of fine roots was studied in 23 woody species and two grassland communities, growing under natural conditions in southern Spain. Calculation of the energy (glucose) required for their synthesis was based on the quantification of chemical components present in tissues. Despite considerable differences in the chemical composition of the three life forms studied (trees, shrubs and herbaceous), detected differences in construction cost were non‐significant (mean value: 1·64 ± 0·13 g glucose g?1). However, shrubs and herbaceous plants growing in more fertile habitats expended significantly less energy on root synthesis (1·58 ± 0·06 and 1·41 ± 0·05 g glucose g?1, respectively) than those growing in less fertile areas (1·80 ± 0·06 and 1·57 ± 0·1 g glucose g?1, respectively), because they contained smaller amounts of either waxes (shrubs) or lignins (herbaceous), both expensive to synthesize, and, proportionately, more cellulose; which is inexpensive to synthesize. Deciduous and evergreen tree species also differed mainly with regard to wax and cellulose contents, giving rise to a significantly higher construction cost in evergreens (1·57 ± 0·07 g glucose g?1 versus 1·78 ± 0·02 g glucose g?1). The differences observed in construction cost appeared to be due more to habitat‐induced differences in chemical composition than to any intrinsic difference between the species studied.  相似文献

A field study to survey the custom of tying rags on sacred trees in the northern part of Israel was carried out during 2000–2001. It included 60 interviewees: 24 Druze, 18 Moslem Arabs, 12 Moslem Bedouins and 6 Christian Arab individuals. Tree veneration was found to be quite uncommon among the Bedouins and rare among the Christian Arabs. The results of the present study suggest there are 17 reasons for tying rags on sacred trees. Five reasons, as far as the author is aware, were not previously reported from the literature (i.e., breaking an oath, marking a blessed tree, marking the road to a blessed tree, asking for permission to pick fruit, and setting out rags for needy people). These usages appear to be endemic to Israel and to the Druze. Two customs previously reported from Israel but not corroborated by the present survey are to pacify a tree’s spirit and as a charm for new clothes. Three of the 17 known reasons for tying rags on sacred trees are also known from regions beyond the Middle East (i.e., to transfer illness to the tree, to use a rag as a visiting card, and to pacify the tree’s spirits). And lastly, several customs never reported before from Israel appear to stem from the belief in ancient pagan polytheistic religions (to ensure a good yield, offerings to a tree’s deities/spirits, to pacify the ancestor’s spirits, to commemorate a death, and to pacify a tree’s spirit while picking fruits). Twelve of the reported 17 reasons for hanging rags on sacred trees are known from Israel. These findings elucidate the widespread and variable tree worship traditions that are prevalent today in the region. In spite of a monotheistic ban against ancient pagan beliefs, trees still remain a subject of worship in Israel today, as manifested by the daily tying of rags upon branches.  相似文献

Both population genetics and systematics are core disciplines of evolutionary biology. While systematics deals with genealogical relationships among taxa, population genetics has mainly been based on allele frequencies and the distribution of genetic variants whose genealogical relations could for a long time, due mainly to methodological constraints, not be inferred. The advent of mitochondrial DNA analyses and modern sequencing techniques in the 1970s revolutionized evolutionary genetic studies and gave rise to molecular phylogenetics. In the wake of this new development systematic approaches and principles were incorporated into intraspecific studies at the population level, e.g. the concept of monophyly which is used to delineate evolutionarily significant units in conservation biology. A new discipline combining phylogenetic analyses of genetic lineages with their geographic distribution ('phylogeography') was introduced as an explicit synthesis of population genetics and systematics. On the other hand, it has increasingly become obvious that discordances between gene trees and species trees not only result from spurious data sets or methodological flaws in phylogenetic analyses, but that they often reflect real population genetic processes such as lineage sorting or hybridization. These processes have to be taken into account when evaluating the reliability of gene trees to avoid wrong phylogenetic conclusions. The present review focuses on the phenomenon of non-phylogenetic sorting of ancestral polymorphisms, its probability and its consequences for molecular systematics.  相似文献

I introduce the software JML that tests for the presence of hybridization in multispecies sequence data sets by posterior predictive checking following Joly, McLenachan and Lockhart (2009, American Naturalist 174, e54). Although their method could potentially be applied on any data set, the lack of appropriate software made its application difficult. The software JML thus fills a need for an easy application of the method but also includes improvements such as the possibility to incorporate uncertainty in the species tree topology. The JML software uses a posterior distribution of species trees, population sizes and branch lengths to simulate replicate sequence data sets using the coalescent with no migration. A test quantity, defined as the minimum pairwise sequence distance between sequences of two species, is then evaluated on the simulated data sets and compared to the one estimated from the original data. Because the test quantity is a good predictor of hybridization events, departure from the bifurcating species tree model could be interpreted as evidence of hybridization. Software performance in terms of computing time is evaluated for several parameters. I also show an application example of the software for detecting hybridization among native diploid North American roses.  相似文献

We studied the influence of summer drought and winter temperatures on seasonal and spatial variations of light-saturated net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance in Mediterranean woody species. We measured variations in leaf gas exchange over 3 years in 13 Mediterranean trees and shrubs, located at four different sites along a climate gradient of temperature and precipitation in the island of Mallorca (West Mediterranean basin). Net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were at a maximum during spring, autumn or winter and at a minimum during summer in most sites, species and years. Nevertheless, important spatial, temporal and species-specific variations were observed. Summer drought limitation to gas exchange was greatest in the dry part of the transect, where many species showed their maximum gas exchange rate during winter. In contrast, winter temperatures limited gas exchange of many species at the wet and cool end of the transect, while summer depression of gas exchange was shorter and less pronounced. These results suggest that the effect on carbon fixation and productivity by the predicted future increase of aridity in the Mediterranean basin will depend on whether gas exchange is mostly limited by summer drought or by low winter temperatures.  相似文献

Few experiments have yet been performed to explore the potential ecological impacts of genetic modification in long-lifespan species such as trees. In this paper, we review the available data on GM trees with modified lignin focussing on the results of the first long-term field trials of such trees. These trials evaluated poplars expressing antisense transgenes to reduce the expression of the lignin biosynthesis genes cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) or caffeic acid/5-hydroxyferulic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) with the aim of producing trees with improved pulping characteristics. The trees were grown for 4 years at two sites in France and England, and their ecological impacts and agronomic performance were assessed. Modifications to lignin in the poplars were maintained over the 4 years of the trial. The trees remained healthy throughout and growth was normal. The lignin modifications had no unexpected biological or ecological impacts. Interactions with leaf-feeding insects, microbial pathogens and soil organisms were unaltered although the short-term decomposition of transgenic roots was slightly enhanced. Investigation of the ecological impacts of the GM trees was curtailed by the early termination of the field trial when it was attacked and largely destroyed by anti-GM protestors. To supplement our work on the decomposition of GM plant materials with modified lignin, we have therefore turned to the study of transgenic tobacco lines where we can perform more comprehensive and controlled analyses of the biological and ecological effects of lignin-gene suppression.  相似文献

Choosing among alternative trees of multigene families   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Estimation of gene trees is the first step in testing alternative hypotheses about the evolution of multigene families. The standard practice for inferring gene family history is to construct trees that meet some objective criteria based on the fit of the character state changes (nucleotide or amino acid changes) to the gene tree. Unfortunately, analysis of character state data can be misleading. In addition, this approach ignores information about the relationships of the species from which the genes have been sampled. In this paper I explore using statistics of fit between the character data and gene trees and the reconciliation of the gene and species trees for choosing among alternative evolutionary hypotheses of gene families. In particular, I advocate a two-pronged strategy for choosing among alternative gene trees. First, the character data are used to define a set of acceptable gene trees (i.e., trees that are not significantly different from the minimum length tree). Next, the set of acceptable gene trees is reconciled with a known species tree, and the gene tree requiring the fewest number of gene duplications and losses is adopted as the best estimate of evolutionary history. The approach is illustrated using three gene families: BMP, EGR, and LDH.  相似文献
