The responses of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence of field-growing Ulmus pumila seedlings to changes in simulated precipitation were studied in Hunshandak Sandland, China. Leaf water potential (Ψwp), net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) were significantly increased with enhancement of precipitation from 0 to 20 mm (p<0.01), indicating stomatal limitation of U. pumila seedlings that could be avoided when soil water was abundant. However, P N changed slightly when precipitation exceeded 20 mm (p>0.05), indicating more precipitation than 20 mm had no significant effects on photosynthesis. Maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS 2 (Fv/Fm) increased from 0.53 to 0.78 when rainfall increased from 0 to 10 mm, and Fv/Fm maintained a steady state level when rainfall was more than 10 mm. Water use efficiency (WUE) decreased significantly (from 78–95 to 23–27 μmol mol−1) with enhancement of rainfalls. P N showed significant linear correlations with both g s and Ψwp (p<0.0001), which implied that leaf water status influenced gas exchange of U. pumila seedlings. The 20-mm precipitation (soil water content at about 15 %, v/v) might be enough for the growth of elm seedlings. When soil water content (SWC) reached 10 %, down regulation of PS2 photochemical efficiency could be avoided, but stomatal limitation to photosynthesis remained. When SWC exceeded 15 %, stomatal limitation to photosynthesis could be avoided, indicating elm seedlings might tolerate moderate drought.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and leaf water potential (Ψl) of an annual pioneer C4 grass (Agriophyllum squarrosum) were compared under different simulated precipitation events in a field of Hunshandak Sandland, China. The increase of soil water content (SWC) had significant effect on these physiological traits (p<0.001). In the vegetative stage, the values of P N, E, and g s went up sharply when SWC increased at the beginning, while they went down with continuous increase of SWC. P N, E, and g s increased 1.4, 1.7, and 1.7 fold, respectively, with SWC range from 6.7 to 11.6 %. In the reproductive stage, similar trends were found, except for the climate with a higher SWC. This indicated that A. squarrosum was very sensitive to the small increment of SWC which might have a large photosynthetic potential. Ψl increased by about 8 % as the SWC changed from 6.7 to 8.8 %, and then maintained a steady level when the SWC was higher than 8.8 %, while the values of P N, E, and g s kept increasing even after this SWC. This might indicate that the adjustment of Ψl response to the changes of SWC lagged that of the photosynthetic parameters. The objectives of this study were to investigate stomatal regulation in maize seedlings during progressive soil drying and to determine the impact of stomatal movement on photosynthetic activity. In well-watered and drought-stressed plants, leaf water potential (Ψ leaf), relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (g s), photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf instantaneous water use efficiency (iWUEleaf), and abscisic acid (ABA) and zeatin-riboside (ZR) accumulation were measured. Results showed that g s decreased significantly with progressive drought and stomatal limitations were responsible for inhibiting photosynthesis in the initial stages of short-term drought. However, after 5 days of withholding water, non-stomatal limitations, such as damage to the PSII reaction center, became the main limiting factor. Stomatal behavior was correlated with changes in both hydraulic and chemical signals; however, changes in ABA and ZR occurred prior to any change in leaf water status. ABA in leaf and root tissue increased progressively during soil drying, and further analysis found that leaf ABA was negatively correlated with g s (R 2 = 0.907, p < 0.05). In contrast, leaf and root ZR decreased gradually. ZR in leaf tissue was positively correlated with g s (R 2 = 0.859, p < 0.05). These results indicate that ABA could induce stomatal closure, and ZR works antagonistically against ABA in stomatal behavior. In addition, the ABA/ZR ratio also had a strong correlation with g s, suggesting that the combined chemical signal (the interaction between ABA and cytokinin) plays a role in coordinating stomatal behavior. In addition, Ψ leaf and RWC decreased significantly after only 3 days of drought stress, also affecting stomatal behavior.  相似文献

Goldspur apple (Malus pumila cv. Goldspur) is one of the main fruit trees planted in semiarid loess hilly areas. The photosynthetic efficiency in leaves of eight-year-old trees were studied under different soil water conditions with a Li-6400 portable photosynthesis system and a Li-Cor1600 portable steady state porometer in order to explore the effects of soil water stress on photosynthesis and the suitable soil water content (SWC) for water-saving irrigation of apple orchards. The results showed that the leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), water-use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), and stomatal limiting value (L s) displayed different threshold responses to soil water variation. When SWC was within a range of about 60%–86% of field capacity (FC), P N and E were maintained in a relative steady state. At an elevated level but below 60% of FC, both P N and E decreased evidently with decreasing soil moisture. The SWC needed to support WUE in a relatively steady state and at a high level was in the range of about 50%–71% of FC. When SWC was less than 48% of FC, g s and L s declined with decreasing soil moisture, while C i increased rapidly. Based on the analysis of the stomatal limitation of photosynthesis using two criteria (C i and L s) suggested by Farquhar and Sharkey, it was implied that the predominant cause of restricting P N had changed from stomatal limitation to nonstomatal one under severe water stress. In terms of water-saving irrigation for enhancing water-use efficiency, it was concluded that in semiarid loess hilly areas, the suitable range of SWC for water-saving irrigation in goldspur apple orchards is in the range of about 50%–71% of FC, and the most severe degree of soil water stress tolerated for photosynthesis is about 48% of FC.  相似文献

Drought has been identified as a major factor restricting maize productivity worldwide, especially in the rainfed areas. The objective of the present study was to investigate the physiological adaptation strategies and sugar-related gene expression levels in three maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes with different drought tolerance abilities (Suwan4452, drought tolerant as a positive check; S7328, drought susceptible as a negative check; Pac339, drought susceptible) at the seedling stage. Ten-day old seedlings of maize genotypes were subjected to (i) well-watered (WW) or control and (ii) water-deficit (WD) conditions. Leaf osmotic potential of cv. S7328 under WD was significantly decreased by 1.35–1.45 folds compared with cv. Pac339 under WW, whereas it was retained in cv. Suwan4452, which utilized total soluble sugars as the major osmolytes for maintaining leaf greenness, Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, and stomatal function (Pn, net photosynthetic rate; gs, stomatal conductance; and E, transpiration rate). Interestingly, sucrose degradation (65% over the control) in cv. Pac339 under WD was evident in relation to the downregulation of the ZmSPS1 level, whereas glucose enrichment (1.65 folds over the control) was observed in relation to the upregulation of ZmSPS1 and ZmSUS1. Moreover, CWSI (crop water stress index), calculated from leaf temperature of stressed plants, was negatively correlated with E, gs, and Pn. Overall, growth characteristics, aboveground and belowground parts, in the drought-susceptible cv. Pac339 and cv. S7328, were significantly decreased (> 25% over the control), whereas these parameters in the drought-tolerant cv. Suwan4452 were unaffected. The study validates the use of leaf temperature, CWSI, Pn, gs, and E as sensitive parameters and overall growth characters as effective indices for drought tolerance screening in maize genotypes at the seedling stage. However, further experiments are required to validate the results observed in this study under field conditions.

Summary The relations between leaf conductance (gl) transpiration rate and root permeability to water (Rp) of three sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars grown in a controlled environment cabinet are described. No differences in transpiration rates were found but it was shown that plants with low values of Rp have active stomatal closure with favourable consequences for water use efficiency under water limiting conditions.Rp was estimated by applying hydrostatic pressure on the root system. Values of Rp per unit root volume ranged from 0.34×10–5 to 16.75×10–5 (s MPa–1). There were significant inter-cultivar differences (P<0.05) in Rp and gl and an inverse correlation between Rp and the maximum values cf gl within cultivars.Pressure applied on the root system is proposed as a useful tool for the determination of differences in the root permeability to water amongst sunflower cultivars.  相似文献

This study characterized morphological and physiological responses of two Malus species to exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. Exogenous ABA was sprayed onto the leaves of potted 1-year-old seedlings of M. sieversii and M. hupehensis, originated from regions with low annual rainfall and high annual rainfall, respectively. The results demonstrated that exogenous ABA application significantly decreased height growth (H), total biomass (TB), total leaf area (LA), net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (g s), and significantly increased root/shoot ratio (RS), specific leaf area (SLA), endogenous ABA concentration, water use efficiency (WUE) and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. However, distinct interspecific differences were found in ABA-induced morphological and physiological responses. Compared with M. hupehensis, M. sieversii was more responsive to exogenous ABA application, resulting in larger decreases in H, LA, A and g s, and larger increases in RS, SLA, WUEL, WUEi, ABA and δ13C. These results suggest strong evidence for different maintenance of fitness under stressful conditions between species of Malus. In addition, application of exogenous ABA appears to enhance the tolerance of two Malus species to drought-stress.  相似文献

Carbon isotope discrimination (A), leaf conductance (gs), photosynthetic capacity, and plant growth were measured in well-watered, glasshouse-grown potato plants of clones from a cross made between diploid Solanum tuberosum and Solanum vernei. Clones showed significant differences (P < 0.001) in gs, Δ, stomatal density, root growth, and total dry matter production. Carbon isotope discrimination of genotypes was positively correlated (P < 0.001) with gs. There was no correlation between gs and stomatal density indicating that differences in gs reflected differences in stomatal aperture. Differences in rooting characteristics or in root/shoot ratio did not contribute to differences in gs or A. Genotypic differences in photosynthetic capacity were not statistically significant, and there was no correlation between A and photosynthetic capacity. Total dry matter production and A were positively correlated (P < 0.001) when differences in the time of plant emergence were included in the regression model. It is concluded that differences in A among potato genotypes is largely determined by gs, but confounding of gs and photosynthetic capacity reduces genotypic variation in A compared with that in gs. Total dry matter production is largely determined by processes other than carbon assimilation rate per unit area in individual leaves. Effective use of A as a character for selection in plant breeding depends on elucidating the effects that differences in stomatal characteristics have on crop production both in well-watered and in water-limited crops.  相似文献

Reduced stomatal conductance (gs) during soil drought in angiosperms may result from effects of leaf turgor on stomata and/or factors that do not directly depend on leaf turgor, including root‐derived abscisic acid (ABA) signals. To quantify the roles of leaf turgor‐mediated and leaf turgor‐independent mechanisms in gs decline during drought, we measured drought responses of gs and water relations in three woody species (almond, grapevine and olive) under a range of conditions designed to generate independent variation in leaf and root turgor, including diurnal variation in evaporative demand and changes in plant hydraulic conductance and leaf osmotic pressure. We then applied these data to a process‐based gs model and used a novel method to partition observed declines in gs during drought into contributions from each parameter in the model. Soil drought reduced gs by 63–84% across species, and the model reproduced these changes well (r2 = 0.91, P < 0.0001, n = 44) despite having only a single fitted parameter. Our analysis concluded that responses mediated by leaf turgor could explain over 87% of the observed decline in gs across species, adding to a growing body of evidence that challenges the root ABA‐centric model of stomatal responses to drought.  相似文献

The responses of water relations, stomatal conductance (gs) and growth parameters of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Royesta) plants to nitrogen fertilisation and drought were studied. The plants were subjected to a long-term, moderate and progressive water stress by adding 80 % of the water evapotranspirated by the plant the preceding day. Well-watered plants received 100 % of the water evapotranspirated. Two weeks before starting the drought period, the plants were fertilised with Hoagland’s solution with 14, 60 and 110 mM NO3 (N14, N60 and N110, respectively). Plants of the N110 treatment had the highest leaf area. However, gs was higher for N60 plants and lower for N110 plants. At the end of the drought period, N60 plants showed the lowest values of water potential (Ψw) and osmotic potential (Ψs), and the highest values of pressure potential (Ψp). N60 plants showed the highest Ψs at maximum Ψp and the highest bulk modulus of elasticity.  相似文献

Three- and four-year-old potted, greenhouse-grown cedar seedlings were subjected to two different watering regimes: half received full water supply and the other half was submitted to moderate drought (50% of the full water supply). Height growth was the greatest for C. atlantica and the most-limited for C. brevifolia in the well-watered set. However, in the dry set, height growth was less affected by drought conditions for C. brevifolia than for C. atlantica. Cedrus libani gave intermediate results for both watering regimes. Moderate drought provoked a decrease in osmotic potential at full leaf turgor and a long-lasting osmotic adjustment. When irrigation was withheld completely to induce severe soil drying, gas exchange decreased and then stopped at predawn water potentials of −3.0 MPa for C. brevifolia, between −2.6 and −2.8 MPa for C. libani, and at −2.4 MPa for C. atlantica, irrespective of watering regime. For all species, the dry set showed lower net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (g s) than the plants in the well-watered set. A and g s responded to variations in atmospheric water-vapour pressure deficit (VPD). As VPD increased, A and g s decreased, and this trend was proportionate to initial values at low VPD, but remained independent of previous watering treatments, plant water status or species. To conclude, C. brevifolia appears to be a species with limited growth potential but strong soil drought tolerance whereas C. atlantica has strong growth potential when an adequate water supply is available but is more sensitive to soil drought. C. libani shows an intermediate behaviour for growth and drought tolerance.  相似文献

Inter-comparisons in the gas exchange patterns and root characteristics under both well-watered and drought conditions were done in three-years-old seedlings of three oak species (Quercus cerris L., Q. frainetto Ten., and Q. ilex L.) growing in controlled environment. Well-watered Q. cerris had greater physiological performances than other oaks, but under drought it was not able to face the water stress showing also structural modifications such as reduction of root length and average diameter. On the other hand, Q. ilex maintained root growth both in drought or well-watered soils. Moreover, it was able to keep open stomata also under water stress, although stomatal conductance (g s) was low. Q. frainetto had an intermediate position in regard to its physiological and root structural characteristics between Q. cerris and Q. ilex under drought stress. For all oaks the relationship between g s and the ratio of sub-stomatal and ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a) highlighted the dynamic adaptation of g s to the increase of hydraulic resistances of leaf, stem, and roots portions, more evident during the air humidity change and progressive soil dehydration. This suggests a well-triggered above-and under-ground mechanism to endure the drought stress.  相似文献

Growth and nutrient utilization of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Arc) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Carioca) were studied in an acid soil adjusted to eight levels of soil acidity by lime addition. Application of lime significantly (P<0.05) increased shoot and root growth for both species. However, common bean was far less sensitive to soil acidity than alfalfa. Maximum alfalfa growth was obtained at a soil pH of 5.8 and maximum bean growth was achieved at pH 5.0. Root and shoot growth of both legumes was positively correlated (P<0.01) with soil pH, exchangeable Ca and exchangeable Mg and negatively correlated (P<0.01) with soil exchangeable Al. Common bean had a lower internal P requirement for maximum growth and was more efficient than alfalfa in taking up Ca and Mg. These characteristics would contribute to the favorable growth of common bean in acid-infertile soils.  相似文献

The interaction of extreme temperature events with future atmospheric CO2 concentrations may have strong impacts on physiological performance of desert shrub seedlings, which during the critical establishment phase often endure temperature extremes in conjunction with pronounced drought. To evaluate the interaction of drought and CO2 on photosynthesis during heat stress, one-year-old Larrea tridentata[DC] Cov. seedlings were exposed to nine days of heat with midday air temperature maxima reaching 53 °C under three atmospheric CO2 concentrations (360, 550 and 700 mol mol–1) and two water regimes (well-watered and droughted). Photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and water potential responses were measured prior to, during and one week following the high temperature stress event. Heat stress markedly decreased net photosynthetic rate (A net), stomatal conductance (g s), and the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F v/F m) in all plants except for well-watered L. tridentata grown in 700 mol mol–1 CO2. A net and g s remained similar to pre-stress levels in these plants. In droughted L. tridentata, A net was ca. 2× (in 550 mol mol–1 CO2) to 3× (in 700 mol mol–1 CO2) higher than in ambient-CO2-grown plants, while g s and F v/F m were similar and low in all CO2 treatments. Following heat stress, g s in all well-watered plants rose dramatically, exceeding pre-stress levels by up to 100%. In droughted plants, g s and A net rose only in plants grown at elevated CO2 following release from heat. This recovery response was strongest at 700 mol mol–1 CO2, which returned to A net and g s values similar to pre-heat following several days of recovery. Extreme heat diminished the photosynthetic down-regulation response to growth at elevated CO2 under well-watered conditions, similar to the action of drought. Ambient-CO2-grown L. tridentata did not show significant recovery of photosynthetic capacity (A \max and CE) after alleviation of temperature stress, especially when exposed to drought, while plants exposed to elevated CO2 appeared to be unaffected. These findings suggest that elevated CO2 could promote photosynthetic activity during critical periods of seedling establishment, and enhance the potential for L. tridentata to survive extreme high temperature events.  相似文献

On the first day after foliar application, chitosan pentamer (CH5) and chitin pentamer (CHIT5) decreased net photosynthetic rate (P N) of soybean and maize, however, on subsequent days there was an increase in P N in some treatments. CH5 caused an increase in maize P N on day 3 at 10–5 and 10–7 M; the increases were 18 and 10 % over the control plants. This increase was correlated with increases in stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E), while the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) was not different from the control plants. P N of soybean plants did not differ from the control plants except for treatment CH5 (10–7 M) which caused an 8 % increase on day 2, along with increased g s, E, and C i. On days 5 and 6 the CHIT5 treatment caused a 6–8 % increase in P N of maize, which was accompanied by increases in g s, E, and C i. However, there was no such increase for soybean plants treated with CHIT5. In general, foliar application of high molecular mass chitin (CHH) resulted in decreased P N, particularly for 0.010 % treated plants, both in maize and soybean. Foliar applications of chitosan and chitin oligomers did not affect (p > 0.05) maize or soybean height, root length, leaf area, shoot or root or total dry mass.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Peach (Prunus persica L.) seedlings were germinated and grown for two growing seasons either in open top chambers (OTC) with ambient (350 μmol mol-1) or elevated (700 μmol mol-1) [CO2], or in an outside control plot, all located inside a glasshouse. The seedlings were grown in 10 dm3 pots and were fertilised once a week following Ingestad principles in order to supply mineral nutrients at free access rates. In the second growing season, rapid onset of water stress was imposed on rapidly growing peach seedlings by withholding water for a four-week drying cycle. In elevated [CO2], seedlings had a total dry mass which was 33% higher than that in ambient [CO2]. This increase was largely a consequence of increased height growth. [CO2] and irrigation treatments had only small effects on allocation, and there was no increase in root allocation with low water availability possibly as consequence of the high-nutrient regime. Specific leaf area was significantly reduced in elevated [CO2], and probably resulted from increases in starch concentrations. Stomatal conductance (g s) was not affected by elevated [CO2] both in well-watered and water-stressed seedlings. The combination of increased assimilation rate (A) and unchanged g s led to large increases in intrinsic water use efficiency in response to elevated [CO2]. The A/C i curves were used to derive the parameters describing photosynthetic capacity, Amax, Jmax and Vcmax . These parameters were similar among [CO2] treatments; thus, there was no downward acclimation of photosynthesis in elevated [CO2]. Moreover, Amax, Jmax and Vcmax scaled linearly with leaf N content per unit leaf area. This indicates that the whole-plant source-sink balance of peach seedlings was not disrupted by growth in elevated [CO2], because root volume and nutrient supply were non-restricting. These values may be used in scaling up models to improve their ability to predict the magnitude of tree responses to climate change in the Mediterranean area.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of root pruning at the stem elongation stage on the growth and water use efficiency (WUE) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum). The results showed that stomatal conductance (g) and transpiration (E) of wheat were very sensitive to root pruning. After root pruning, they declined rapidly and but returned to pre-pruning values 15 days after treatment. Under well-watered conditions, there was no significant difference in leaf water potential (ψleaf) between root pruned and control plants after root pruning. Under moderate drought stress, ψleaf of root pruned plants declined significantly compared to the control 3 days after root pruning. After 15 days, ψleaf of root pruned plants was similar to the controls. Under different soil moisture levels, net assimilation rate (A) of root pruned plants was lower than controls 3–7 days after root pruning, but was similar to the controls 15 days after pruning. At anthesis (50 days after root pruning), root pruned plants showed significantly higher A compared with the control. Leaf area per tiller and tiller number of root pruning plants was significant lower than the control at booting stage, which showed that root pruning restrained the growth of plants in the early growing stage, but leaf area per stem, of root pruned plants, was similar to the control at anthesis. Under both soil moisture levels, there was no significant difference in grain yield between root pruned and the control plants in the monoculture. In mixture with the control plants, the root pruned plants was less productive and had a lower relative yield (0.92 and 0.78, respectively) compared with the control (1.13 and 1.19, respectively), which suggested that the pruned plants lost some of its competing ability and showed a lower ability to acquire and use the same resources in the mixture compared with the control plant. Over the whole growing cycle, root pruning reduced water consumption (by 10% under well-watered conditions and 16% under moderate drought stress) of wheat significantly compared to the control (< 0.05), and but there was no significant difference in grain yield between root pruned and control plants. Therefore root pruned wheat had a higher WUE with respect to grain yield compared with the controls. In conclusion, lowering water consumption by root pruning in the early growing stage is an effective way to improve water use efficiency in arid and semi arid areas.  相似文献

Tolerance to Water Stress in Tomato Cultivars   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effects of plant water stress imposed at vegetative, flowering, and fruiting stages of four cultivars of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate (E), osmotic adjustment, and crop water stress index (CWSI) were investigated. Osmotic adjustment was the highest in cv. Arka Meghali, followed by cv. RFS-1. CWSI was lowest in cv. Arka Meghali and highest in cv. Pusa Ruby. Significant reduction in g s, E, and P N was observed in all the cultivars. The maximum reduction in E was observed in cv. Arka Saurabh during the fruiting stage (62.4 %) and maximum reduction in P N at the flowering stage in Pusa Ruby (53.1 %). Maximum P N was observed in Arka Meghali under water stress. The values of internal CO2 concentration (C i) did not follow the decrease in g s which might be taken as an indication of mesophyll (non-stomatal) limitation to P N. Magnitude of P N decrease accompanying g s reductions varied in the four cultivars. Arka Meghali which had highest rate of gas exchange efficiency (P N/g s) under water deficits can be recommended for rainfed cultivation. Plants of an Egyptian cultivar of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Giza 63) were exposed in open-top chambers (OTCs) for 8 h d–1 for up to 75 d to a factorial combination of two levels of salinity (0 and 50 mM NaCl) and two levels of O3 (filtered air and 50 mm3 m–3). Exposure to 50 mm3 m–3 O3 significantly decreased stomatal conductance (g s), net photosynthetic rate (P N), and chlorophyll (Chl) content by 20, 25, and 21 %, respectively. This reduction resulted in a change in assimilate allocation in favour of shoot growth leading to a decrease in root to shoot ratio and eventually to a decrease in relative growth rate (RGR) of both root and shoot. There was a very large reduction in yield parameters, especially in the number of ears/plant and 1 000-grain mass. Soil salinity significantly reduced P N and g s by 17 and 15 %, respectively, while Chl content was increased by 17 %. Root growth was decreased leading to an increase in root/shoot ratio. Yield parameters were decreased due to salt stress. There was antagonistic interaction between salinity (50 mM NaCl) and O3 (50 mm3 m–3) showing that salinity effectively protects against the adverse effects of O3 by increasing g s during O3 fumigation.  相似文献

The root growth, changes in Superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) activity, malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and total soluble protein level of broadbean (Vicia faba) seedlings were researched at different soil concentrations of chlorobenzene (CB), 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The results showed that root growth of seedlings was interrupted after 5d of 50–200 μg · g−1 TCB treatment. During a 3 d of recovery period, root growth was, however, restored to some extent although there was a delay in returning to the control level. The total soluble protein content in seedlings increased with TCB concentration and duration of exposure. Effect of TCB stress on SOD activity in seedlings displayed a significant dose-effect relationship for 1–5 d of 50–200 μg · g−1 treatment. When broadbean seedlings were placed in clean tap water for 3 d following exposure to 5 d of TCB stress to clear tap water for 3 d, SOD activity at 50 μg · g−1 TCB recovered towards control level (P> 0.05) while a significant increase in SOD activity was observed at 100 and 200 μg · g−1 TCB compared to control (P< 0.05). The experiments also revealed that a significant increase of MDA level in seedlings occurred after 3 and 5 d of 100 and 200 μg · g−1 TCB treatment (P< 0.05 andP< 0.01), and there was a positive correlation between TCB concentration and MDA level. All the above results showed that SOD activity and MDA level of broadbean seedlings might be proposed as the biomarkers for short-term TCB contamination in soil. Compared to TCB, the toxicity of 50−1000 μg · g−1 CB or HCB in soil to broadbean seedlings was not observed after a 3 d exposure.
