The effects of a population of the boring gastropod Natica tectaon the bivalve Choromytilus meridionalis were investigated atBailey's Cottage, False Bay, South Africa. In July 1979 theN. tecta density on the mussel bed averaged 69 m–2 andthe population consisted mainly of reproductively mature individualsbetween 20–33 mm shell width. Laboratory experiments on N. tecta showed that prey size selectionis an increasing function of predator size. The prey size rangetaken by large N. tecta is also greater than that taken by smallindividuals. The position of the borehole on the mussel shellis a function of the way in which the shell is held by the footduring the boring process. Consumption rates measured in thelaboratory showed an increase from approximately 1 kJ per weekin 18 mm N. tecta to 4.5 kJ per week in 28 mm individuals. Populationconsumption in the field was calculated as 663 kJ m–2month–1. It was estimated that at this rate the standingcrop of mussels in the pool would be eliminated within 10 months.Field measurements showed significant depletion after 6 months. New spat settlement of mussels occur every 4–6 years. The growth curve shows that after one year the population meansize exceeds 30 mm shell length, which is beyond the prey selectionsize range of small N. tecta. It was concluded that at the timeof a new mussel settlement a niche is provided for the simultaneoussettlement and growth of juvenile N. tecta in high densities. However, within one year the increase in prey size, togetherwith depletion due to over-exploitation, limits population growthand density in N. tecta. Two planktonic cyclopoid copepods (Tropocyclops prasinus andMesocyclops longisetus) were raised in the laboratory to obtainlife history information (duration of embryonic and post-embryonicdevelopment, reproductive performance, longevity, and stage-specificlength and weight values). Animals were maintained at 20 and25°C, and fed ad libitum. Development times were temperaturedependent when food was not limiting, with shorter periods ofembryonic and post-embryonic development and decreased longevityat 25°C. Laboratory data on the duration of developmentand biomass, together with population dynamics data obtainedin the field, were used to estimate summer and winter biomassand production of these species in a shallow reservoir, LagoaDourada, Brazil. The maximum production rate of T. prasinus, attained during summer, was 2.8 mg dry weight (DW) m–3day–1 and the highest daily production:biomass (P:B) ratiowas 0.29, whereas for M. longisetus the maximum production ratewas 1.4 mg DW m–3 day–1 and the highest daily P:Bratio was 0.39, in the winter. Over short time intervals (everyother day), there was great variability of the species productionrates. Species production rates were low compared to valuesreported in the literature for the same or other species ofequivalent sized copepods from both tropical and subtropicalregions.  相似文献

Following acclimation to 5°, 15° or 25°C for 14days, samples of 30 Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussels) andCorbicula fluminea (Asian clams) were held in either aerated(control) or extremely hypoxic N2 gassed water (PO2 < 3%of full air saturation). Mortality was negligible in all aeratedcontrols. Mean hypoxia tolerance in D. polymorpha ranged from3–4 days at 25°C to 38–42 days at 5°C. Hypoxiatolerance time of zebra mussels increased significantly withdeclining test temperature (P < 0.001) and increasing acclimationtemperature (P < 0.001). Larger zebra mussels were more tolerantthan smaller individuals. Asian clams were 2–7 times moretolerant of hypoxia than zebra mussels, surviving a mean of11.8 and 35.1 days at 25°C and 15°C, respectively, andwithout mortality for 84 days at 5°C, and were not influencedby temperature acclimation. At 25°C, larger specimens ofAsian clams were less tolerant of hypoxia than smaller individuals. Both species are amongst the least hypoxia tolerant freshwaterbivalve molluscs, reflecting their prevalence in well-oxygenatedshallow water habitats. Prolonged exposure to extreme hypoxiamay provide an efficacious control strategy, particularly forD. polymorpha (Received 12 January 1998; accepted 30 September 1998)  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The reproductive cycle of the zebra mussel {Dreissenapolymorpha) is highly variable throughout its range in Europe,Russia2, and North America. The environmental factors influencingthis variation are poorly understood, but successful reproductionis occurring in areas where it was initially believed that adultzebra mussels could not survive (i.e., southern United States). The differences in mussel reproduction occurring from site-to-sitemake it difficult to predict timing of specific events, suchas the start of larval production, that are important in initiatingcontainment or control procedures. For example, the amount oftime required for a fertilized egg to develop into a juvenilemussel can be as short as 8 days, or as long as 240 days. Releaseof gametes by adults can be a highly synchronized event, focusedover a 1–2 week period, or it can be completely non-synchronized,occurring throughout the year. Zebra mussels in some localitiesstart spawning at water temperatures of 12–13°C, butdo not start until water temperatures reaches 22°C at othersites. While some of this variability in reproductive behaviorstems from mussel adaptation to local conditions, part is dueto difficulties in sampling these events. It is difficult todetermine reproductive success of a specific population becauseof the problems in separating locally produced larvae from larvaedrifting in from other areas. Further research is needed notonly on the relationship between reproduction and environmentat the community level, but also on the variability in responseof individual mussels.  相似文献

Certain anthropogenic chemicals, most notably xeno-oestrogens,are known to have the potential to disrupt vertebrate endocrinesystems. For example, induction of the female-specific protein, vitellogenin, in male fish is a well-known effect of exposureto xeno-oestrogens and serves as a biomarker of such exposure. There have been few comparable studies of putative biomarkersof endocrine disruption in invertebrates. An exception is theupregulation of vitellin-like larval storage protein (LSP) expressionin the barnacle cypris larva following exposure to oestrogenicchemicals. The current study aimed to establish whether larvaeof the glass prawn, Palaemon elegans, are likewise susceptibleto xeno-oestrogen exposure. Using a polyclonal antiserum toP. elegans apolipovitellin, an 86 kDa polypeptide was detectedby western blotting in the larval and early postlarval stagesof this species. An indirect ELISA applied to the soluble proteinfraction of larval homogenates determined that the titre ofthis putative LSP ranged, depending on larval stage, from 0.48–0.67ng µg–1. Exposure of P. elegans larvae to the xeno-oestrogen4-n-nonylphenol (4-NP), at 0.2–20 µg L–1,resulted in a significant, concentration-independent increasein putative LSP levels of 5–18%. Conversely, exposureto the natural oestrogen, 17ß-oestradiol (E2), at0.2 and 20 µg L–1, led to a significant concentration-independentdecline (up to 11%) in LSP levels. Whether the effect of 4-NPresults from endocrine disruption is not known, however, anoestrogen receptor-mediated effect is unlikely. Other than aslight increase in larval mortality when exposed to 4-NP at2 µg L–1, neither 4-NP nor E2 significantly affecteddevelopment, growth or survival of P. elegans larvae.  相似文献

Estimates of Pseudocalanus spp. total daily egg production weremade for spring and summer months using concentration and prosomelength of adult females from 333 and 150 µm mesh samplersfished simultaneously during surveys of larval walleye pollock(Gadidae; Theragra chalcogramma) in Shelikof Strait, Alaska.Retention of congeneric females by the two samplers varied amongmonths because of change in body size, species composition andabundance. This variability created bias in total daily eggproduction estimates when relying on female length and concentrationfrom only one of the samplers.  相似文献

Gymnodinium catenatum Graham (Dinophyceae)in Europe: a growing problem?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The microreticulate resting cyst of the potentially toxic, chain-forming,unarmoured neritic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenalum Graham1943. the planktonic stage of which is not known from NorthEuropean waters, is reported for the first time from recentGerman coastal sediments of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Insandy mud sediments of the German Bight, a maximum of 8 5 livingcysts cm–3 were found. In Kiel Bight sediments G.catenalumwas found in maximum concentrations of 17.0 living cysts cm–3.In surface waters of the German Bight resuspended G catenatumcysts were observed at concentrations of up to 3.6 cysts l–1.Successful germination experiments conducted with natural seawatershow that the occurrence of a vegetative form of G.catenatumin northern Europe is very likely. The present study highlightsthat cyst surveys provide an important tool for the evaluationof areas with potential toxicity problems, as they may indicatethe presence of hitherto overlooked species in the water column.  相似文献

A strain of Coleps hirtus (Ciliophora, Prorodontida) was isolatedfrom the epilimnion of monomictic Lake Kinneret. Growth of thisciliate was tested in response to 12 species of planktonic algaeand seven species of cultured bacteria from lake isolates whichwere offered as food. Eight species of algae (one Cryptophyceaeand seven Chlorophyceae) and four bacteria supported good toexcellent growth of C.hirtus. Growth rates (µ) and doublingtimes (DT) ranged from 0.008 to 0.029 h–1 and from 23.9to 90.8 h respectively. C.hirtus was able to grow on bacteriaat concentration levels as low as 2–8 x 105 cells ml–1.No correlation was observed between growth rate of C.hirtusand cell volume of the prey. aPresent address: Istituto di Ecologia, Universita di Parma,43100 Parma, Italy  相似文献

The microstructure, morphology and ontogenetic development ofstatoliths and age and growth of 405 planktonic paralarvae and117 juveniles belonging to 10 species of gonatid squids (Cephalopoda,Oegopsida) were studied in the region of the continental slopein the western part of the Bering Sea (57°00'–61°30'N,163°00'E–179°20'W). The statolith microstructureof all species was characterized by the presence of a largedroplet-shaped nucleus and bipartite postnuclear zone dividedinto two by the first stress check, except for Berryteuthismagister which had only one stress check and an undivided postnuclearzone. In Gonatus spp., completion of development of the postnuclearzone coincided with full development of the central hook onthe tentacular club. Daily periodicity of statolith growth incrementswas validated by maintaining 13 paralarvae of the four mostabundant species in captivity. All species might be subdividedinto two groups based on statolith microstructure, i.e. specieswith a central position of the nucleus within the first statolithcheck (Gonatopsis spp., Egonatus tinro and B.magister) and specieswith the nucleus shifted to the inner side of the first statolithcheck (Gonatus spp.). Comparative analysis of statolith morphologyshowed that paralarval statoliths have species-specific charactersthat allowed the construction of keys to identify species ofgonatid paralarvae based on their statoliths. Analysis of paralarvalgrowth using statoliths revealed that these cold-water planktonicgonatid paralarvae have fast growth rates, attaining a mantlelength of 7–10 mm at 15–20 days and 20–25mm at 35–70 days.  相似文献

The growth rates of Appendicularia sicula, Fritillaria borealissargassi, Fritillaria haplostoma, Oikopleura dioica and Oikopleuralongicauda were determined from microcosms incubated in situat 23C in Jamaican waters. Experiments were conducted fromoligotrophic offshore waters, through mesotrophic Lime Cay andeutrophic Kingston Harbour in both natural and nutrient-enhancedphytoplankton communities. Length-weight relationships werecalculated for two of these species: O.longicauda log W=2.47log TL –6.10 and F.haplostoma log W=2.44 log TL –7.37,where weight (W) is in micrograms and trunk length (TL) is inmicrometres. Instantaneous growth rates averaged 1.7–2.5day–1 for the five species and were observed as high as3.3 day–1 These instantaneous rates are equivalent todaily specific growth rates averaging 4.6–11.4 and rangingup to 28. In larger genera, growth rates were related positivelyto picoplankton and nanoplankton concentration, and negativelyto the biomass of larvaceans, but in the smallest species growthwas unrelated to these factors. However, because the variabilityin these two factors within microcosms exceeded their naturalrange of variability, growth rates of larvaceans may normallybe unlimited by resources or population density effects. 1Present address :Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute 7700Sandholdt Road, Moss Landing, CA 95039-0628, USA 2Present address :Bedford Institute of Oceanography PO Box 1006,Dartmouth, Nova Scotia B2Y 4A2, Canada  相似文献

Overwintering of Microcystis aeruginosa Kutz. in a shallow lake   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The standing crop and photosynthetic activity of Microcystisaeruginosa Kütz. in both the plankton and sediment wereinvestigated from November 1979 to May 1982 in Lake Kasumigaura,Japan. The number of planktonic colonies of this species decreasedfrom early autumn to early spring, but increased in the sedimentduring late summer and autumn. The overwintering colonies inthe sediment were –100–1000 times greater per unitarea than those in lake water. No photoinhibition of photosynthesiscould be observed in overwintering Microcystis. The values ofthe initial slopes of photosynthesis-light (P-I) curves weresimilar to those of the summer population, although the maximumphotosynthetic rate (Pmax) measured at 20°C was lower thanthat of the summer planktonic population. In winter the valuesof initial slope of the P-I curve, and the ratio of phycobilinto chlorophyll a sorted from sediment were higher than in coloniesfrom the plankton.  相似文献

As a consequence of the combined effects of prey patchinessand diel or tidal vertical migrations in the water column, decapodcrustacean larvae may experience temporal or spatial variabilityin the availability of planktonic food. In a laboratory study,we evaluated effects of temporarily limited access to prey onthe larvae of three species of brachyuran crabs, Chasmagnathusgranulata, Cancer pagurus and Carcinus maenas. Stage-I zoeaewere fed ad libitum for 4 or 6 h per day (20 or 25% treatments;6 h tested in C. pagurus only), and rates of larval survivaland development were compared with those observed in continuouslyfed control groups (24 h, 100%). In C. granulata, we also testedif intraspecific variability in initial biomass of freshly hatchedlarvae originating from different broods has an influence onearly larval tolerance of food limitation. Moreover, we exposedembryos and larvae of this estuarine species to moderately decreasedsalinities to identify possible interactions of osmotic andnutritional stress. Finally, we evaluated in this species theeffect of food limitation on survival from hatching throughall larval instars to metamorphosis. In all three species, limitedaccess to prey had only weak or insignificant negative effectson survival through the Zoea-I stage. The strength of the effectsof temporary food limitation varied in C. granulata significantlyamong broods. However, no significant relationships were foundbetween initial larval biomass (C content) and either survivalor development duration. Strongly decreased survival to metamorphosiswas found when food limitation continued throughout larval development. Thus, early brachyuran crab larvae are well adapted to transitorylack of planktonic food. The capability of the Zoea-I stageof C. granulata to withstand nutritional stress also under conditionsof concomitant salinity stress allows them to exploit variousbrackish environments within estuarine gradients. However, continuedexposure to limited access to planktonic prey may exceed thenutritional flexibility of C. granulata larvae.  相似文献

Larval fishes and zooplankton in a cyclonic eddy in Hawaiian waters   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A cold-core eddy occurred off the Kona coast of the island ofHawaii in July 1982. It remained in that area for {small tilde}70days, sufficient time for many reef fish species to completetheir planktonic larval phase. The deployment of eight currentdrogues in the eddy showed how entrainment of plankton fromthe reef and adjacent offshore waters can occur and that passivedrift can return drifters from the deep sea to shore. Larvalfishes may be swept past the island every 7–8 days ina weak eddy and 3.5–5 days in a strong eddy. Planktoncollections were made at night near the surface and at the samedepth as the current drogues. Zooplankton were most concentratedat the eddy center. Taxonomic analysis of the plankton showedthat the dominant animals were calanoid copepods, malacostracans, hyperud amphipods, gastropod and bivalve larvae and chaetognaths. The densities of zooplankton and larval fishes in the eddy werehigher than in the same area before the arrival of an eddy.Larval fishes were most abundant in the periphery and amongthese, midwater fish larvae (gonostomatids and myctophids) werethe most numerous. Other numerous fish larvae in the eddy includedscombrids, particularly Thunnus albacares. carangids and thereef fish, Abudefduf abdominalis is (Pomacentridae).  相似文献

Feeding by larval and post-larval ctenophores on microzooplankton   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Feeding by the coastal ctenophorc, Mnemiopsis leidyi, on microplanktonwas investigated. Larval ctenophores (tentaculate stage) grewbest and had the highest survival rates when offered a mixtureof ciliates and copepod nauplii. Larvae did not survive whenoffered phytoplankton alone. Clearing of planktonjc ciliatesby post-larval ctenophores was a function of the ciliate speciesand the size of the predator. Removal of small ciliates (<20µm in size) and phytoplankton was negligible. Small post-larvalctenophores (volume <4 cm3) had higher biovolume-specificclearing rates (0.5–1.5 1 cm–3 day–1) thandid larger ctenophores fed the same ciliate species. Duringin situ incubations, adult M. leidyi removed ciliates, rotifersand copepod nauplii from natural microplankton assemblages. The data indicate that non-crustacean microzooplanlctoo arean important component of the diet of larval and post-larvallocate cteoophores, particularly when copepod standing stocksare low.  相似文献

The diet of the starfish, Marthasterias glacialis (L.), consists of a variety of mollusc species, as well as ascidians and barnacles. Starfish densities are maximal where mussels, Choromytilus meridionalis (Krauss), are abundant and in such areas mussels form the bulk of the diet. Laboratory feeding experiments indicate that Marthasterias glacialis select mussels of particular sizes and that the length of prey taken is an increasing function of predator arm length. The time taken to consume each mussel is determined by the ratio of shell length to starfish size. The number of mussels consumed per day increases only slightly with starfish size, but because the prey taken increase in size, energy consumption is maintained at a relatively consistent 1% of predator body energy per day. Using prey selection and feeding rate data for different sized starfish, predictive three dimensional predation surfaces are developed for a natural starfish population feeding on either one or two cohort Choromytilus meridionalis populations. The models indicate that predatory effort should be concentrated on the smallest mussels when a single adult cohort is present, but on recruiting mussels just above the minimum prey size limit where two cohorts are present. Other major predators of mussels, the rock lobster, Jasus lalandii (Milne Edwards), and the whelk, Natica tecta Anton, appear to select similar size-ranges of prey to starfish, despite their differing body forms and feeding methods. Since the juveniles of all three predators can only take small mussels, predator recruitment may well depend upon the successful settlement of strong mussel cohorts. Evidence for such entrainment of predator cohorts to settlements of mussels is presented.  相似文献

Pseudocalanus species are important contributors to the secondaryproduction of the northern hemisphere mid- to high-latitudeoceans. In the coastal Gulf of Alaska, Pseudocalanus are presentyear round and are represented by three species. In 2001, Pseudocalanusmimus was the dominant Pseudocalanus species on the shelf duringspring and summer, comprising 30–100% of the total, whilePseudocalanus newmani dominated in Prince William Sound (10–90%).Pseudocalanus minutus were only abundant in Prince William Soundduring early spring. Egg production (by number and volume) wasa function of female prosome length and decreased from springto summer; however, significant variability was attributableto regional influences that were independent of size. For thesame sized female, P. newmani produced more eggs per clutchthan P. mimus. Pseudocalanus mimus, however, tended to havea larger mean egg size than P. newmani. Consequently, clutchvolumes of the two species were indistinguishable. Pseudocalanusegg production rates (EPRs) (eggs female–1 day–1)were lower in July and August (ca. 2–4) than April andMay (ca. 1–9), but total egg production by the population(eggs day–1) was nearly equivalent for the two time periodsdue to higher female concentrations in summer.  相似文献

The structure of the zooplankton biotic community and of copepodpopulation in the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea,Antarctica) was investigated during the 10th Italian AntarcticExpedition (1994/1995). Zooplankton biotic community consistedmainly of pteropods (Limacina helicina and Clione antarctica),Cyclopoid (Oithona similis), Poecilostomatoid (Oncaea curvata)and Calanoid (Ctenocalanus vanus, Paraeuchaeta antarctica, Metridiagerlachei and Stephos longipes) copepods, ostracods, larvalpolychaetes and larval euphausiids. Zooplankton abundance rangedfrom 48.1 ind m–3 to 5968.9 ind m–3, and copepodabundance ranged from 45.2 ind m–3 to 3965.3 ind m–3.The highest peak of zooplankton abundance was observed between25 m and the surface and was mainly due to the contributionof O. similis, O. curvata and C. vanus. Zooplankton biomassranged from 5.28 mg m–3 to 13.04 mg m–3 dry weight;the maximum value was observed between 25 m and the surface.Total lipid content varied from 216.44 to 460.73 mg g–1dry weight.  相似文献

Epilimnetic colonies of Gloeotrichia echinulata were harvestedfrom 200–300 I of water in Lake Erken with filtrationthrough appropriate plankton nets (200 or 70 µm). Phosphateuptake characteristics, phosphorus (P) status and photosynthesisof the colonies were determined twice a week during July andAugust 1991. Phosphate uptake was analysed according to thesimple force- flow relationship of Falkner et al. (Arch. Microbiol.,152, 353–361, 1989). The threshold concentration of Puptake below which uptake ceases for energetic reasons, wasconstantly much higher than the epilimnetic soluble reactivephosphorus (SRP) concentration, so that the planktonic colonieswere unable to acquire any Pin the epilimnion. Neither did organicP seem to be a source of P for planktonic colonies. Gloeotrichiaechinulata has a unique life strategy in comparison to othercommon genera of bloom-forming cynanobacteria. Its P assimilationand growth are completely separated both in time and space;growth is preceded by benthic P assimilation. Epilimnetic growthwas based solely on internally stored P and growth rates fittedthe Droop model well. Depletion of stored P restricts the lengthof the planktonic phase to 15–20 days under ‘optimal’growth conditions. Wind-induced surface drift seemed to be themost important loss factor from the epilimnion. Massive recruitmentof P-rich benthic colonies accounted for two-thirds of totalnet internal P loading observed between mid-July and mid-August(3.8 mg P m–2 day–1).  相似文献
