We investigated the relative importance of environmental factors versus host phenotype in determining parasite prevalence in Eurasian red squirrels ( Sciurus vulgaris). One hundred and forty-three fecal samples of 116 different squirrels collected in 2000 and 2001 from five study areas in the Italian Alps, were examined for intestinal protozoans. Two species of Eimeria were present with a medium to high prevalence in both years and in all areas, while two other species were rare, occurring only in some areas and not in all years. Cryptosporidium parvum had a high prevalence in the two study areas of the Western Alps, while in the three areas of the Central Alps it was recorded only once. The prevalence of Eimeria sciurorum and C. parvum fluctuated in parallel with squirrel density, suggesting a possible correlation between the presence of these protozoans and host density. A gender effect on E. sciurorum prevalence at low density could be explained by different space use patterns and social organization of males and females. C. parvum occurred more frequently in young squirrels, suggesting an acquired immunity in adults, but age-related susceptibility was not found for eimerian species. The coccidian community was more similar within than between regions, and study area and year were key parameters in predicting coccidia infection. There was no evidence of competition between coccidian species, but one positive interaction between E. sciurorum and E. andrewsi was observed. Our results suggest that the effects of geographic region, area features, and year effects probably related to fluctuations in host population density, were more important than individual phenotypic host characteristics in structuring the coccidian assemblage and determining levels of parasite prevalence in red squirrel populations.  相似文献

Host‐parasite relationships are generally understudied in wild populations but have a potential to influence host population dynamics and the broader ecosystem, which becomes particularly important when the host is endangered. Herein we describe a new species of parasitic mite from the genus Ophiomegistus (Parasitiformes: Mesostigmata: Paramegistidae) of an endangered South Australian skink; the pygmy bluetongue lizard (Tiliqua adelaidensis). Adult mites were observed on lizard hosts in three different host populations, among which prevalence varied. No temporal trend in prevalence was evident over two spring‐summer seasons of monitoring. We hypothesise that the reliance on burrows as refuges by T. adelaidensis may be essential for the completion of the mite life cycle and also for horizontal transmission. The conservation implications of not only its effect on the host, but also its potential status as an endangered species itself, are considered.  相似文献

The host‐parasite relationship between bogue (Boops boops) and Cerathotoa parallela (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) was studied in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea (overall prevalence of isopods in the area, age‐dependent and sex‐dependent prevalence). Yearly prevalence ranged from 1.0% in March to 10.7% in October, with a positive correlation between prevalence and mean sea surface temperatures (SST), highest values being related to the period of increasing SST. The first four age‐classes were parasitized, with prevalence decreasing according to the age of the host. The relationship between total length (TL) and total weight (TW) was examined in infested and non‐infested specimens of the same age whereby slight differences were detected, i.e. at a given length non‐infested specimens weighed more than infested fishes. The parasite occurred throughout the study area with wide fluctuations in prevalence, from 0 to 36.4%, the values being higher in the eastern part of the study area. C. parallela parasitize the bogue Boops boops in a manner that does not constitute a serious threat to the life of the host.  相似文献

The parasitic miteHemisarcoptes coccophagus Meyer (Astigmata: Hemisarcoptidae) feeds on armored scale insects (Homoptera: Diaspididae). Three host scales were studied: chaff scale (Parlatoria pergandii Comstock andP. cinerea Hadden) infesting citrus (grapefruit and orange) orchards, latania scale [Hemiberlesia lataniae (Signoret)] and olcander scale (Aspidiotus nerii Bouche) occurring on acacia (Acacia cyanophylla) branches and leaves. The overall dynamics of mite populations were similar on the different scale species, although the level of attack on each sampled diaspidid host was different. Rates of young mite stages were highly variable on all three hosts throughout the sampling period while adult rates were stable, constituting around 20% of all mites. No oviposition by mites occurred in mid-winter on any scale species, on any plants or parts, at all sampling sites. Of the three diaspidids, highest mite prevalence (parasitization rate) occurred on latania scale. Mite prevalence on oleander scale infesting mature leaves was higher than on young leaves.H. coccophagus apparently first attacks latania scale on branches, it then disperses to the same host inhabiting mature leaves, from there to co-occurring oleander scale and finally to oleander scale infesting young leaves. Mite prevalence on chaff scale was influenced by host plants and climatic regions: in the Negev it was higher than in the coastal plain, with scales on grapefruit being more heavily attacked at the former site but not on coastal plain. Our data suggest thatH. coccophagus prefers ovipositing scale females. The decreasing order of preference for other scale stages was: young females immature males, 2nd-instar nymphs females.  相似文献

The occurrence and microhabitat distribution of Dermocystidium percae on perch (Perca fluviatilis) was investigated in four sites in the lower Thames Valley, south‐east England. Fish were infected at all sites, with the highest prevalence occurring in a commercial fishery and the lowest in a large impounded water storage reservoir. The microhabitat distribution of D. percae cysts on the perch favoured the dorsal and anal fins, in contrast to previous studies, although a single occurrence on the gills was reported. The role of host stress on the prevalence of D. percae is discussed.  相似文献

Mermithid nematodes are entomophagous parasites and, despite being present in diverse aquatic insects, studies of caddisflies acting as definitive hosts are few and the ecological impacts on host populations are largely unknown. During a four-year study in a stream in southeastern Australia, parasitic mermithid worms were commonly found inside adult caddisflies, but only species of the genus Ecnomus McLachlan, 1864 (Ecnomidae). Ecnomus were the definitive host and parasite prevalence ranged from <1% to nearly 50% across six species. Species-specific prevalence varied little between years and was typically higher in males than in females. Parasite intensity ranged from 1 to 6 (median = 1), but did not vary between species or sexes. Infected hosts could fly, but were castrated and died when worms emerged. High prevalence and virulence (reproductive failure and death of the host) suggests that these parasites could potentially play a role in the population dynamics of some Ecnomus spp.  相似文献

Understanding the ecology and evolution of parasites is contingent on identifying the selection pressures they face across their infection landscape. Such a task is made challenging by the fact that these pressures will likely vary across time and space, as a result of seasonal and geographical differences in host susceptibility or transmission opportunities. Avian haemosporidian blood parasites are capable of infecting multiple co‐occurring hosts within their ranges, yet whether their distribution across time and space varies similarly in their different host species remains unclear. Here, we applied a new PCR method to detect avian haemosporidia (genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Plasmodium) and to determine parasite prevalence in two closely related and co‐occurring host species, blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus, N = 529) and great tits (Parus major, N = 443). Our samples were collected between autumn and spring, along an elevational gradient in the French Pyrenees and over a three‐year period. Most parasites were found to infect both host species, and while these generalist parasites displayed similar elevational patterns of prevalence in the two host species, this was not always the case for seasonal prevalence patterns. For example, Leucocytozoon group A parasites showed inverse seasonal prevalence when comparing between the two host species, being highest in winter and spring in blue tits but higher in autumn in great tits. While Plasmodium relictum prevalence was overall lower in spring relative to winter or autumn in both species, spring prevalence was also lower in blue tits than in great tits. Together, these results reveal how generalist parasites can exhibit host‐specific epidemiology, which is likely to complicate predictions of host–parasite co‐evolution.  相似文献

Three species of cyprinids, i.e., Capoeta antalyensis (n = 112), C. caelestis (n = 99) and C. angorae (n = 178) were collected from the Anatolian Region of Turkey to carry out this investigation. A total of 389 specimens of Capoeta were examined for Allocreadium isoporum infections throughout the four different seasons of 2012. The prevalence and mean intensity of infection of A. isoporum was investigated in relation to the host species, the seasons across the year, host size, and sex. Two‐hundred and twenty‐two specimens of a trematode identified as A. isoporum were found in these fishes. One‐hundred seventy‐eight C. angorae were caught, and 70 A. isoporum were recorded in 8 of 178 fish examined, with prevalence and mean intensity of infection of 4.49% and 8.7% parasites per infected fish, respectively. In the 112 specimens of C. antalyensis, 73 individuals of A. isoporum were found, with a prevalence of 19.6% and a mean intensity of 3.3. As for the infection in C. caelestis, a total of 79 specimens of A. isoporum were found in 17 of the 99 fish examined, with prevalence and mean intensity of infection of 17.1% and 4.6%, respectively. Prevalence and mean intensity values in relation to host size and sex, as well as the seasonality of infections was analyzed and the results were compared with other studies. The trematode A. isoporum is reported for the first time parasitising three endemic species of Capoeta spp. in Turkey, adding to the knowledge of geographical distribution and host range of this trematode species.  相似文献

Polystoma testimagna n. sp. is described as a new species of the Polystomatidae, parasitic in the urinary bladder of the striped stream frog Strongylopus f. fasciatus collected in the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, Natal, South Africa. Parasite prevalence was found to be 50.0% and 27.7% in two successive years, and the mean intensity was 1.5 and 1.6, respectively. The species occurs together with another Polystoma species in the same water body and within one kilometre from a third species. Aspects of host specificity are discussed and data on the ecology and distribution of the host presented.  相似文献

Summary Pteromalus puparum is a gregarious parasitoid of lepidopterous pupae. To determine in which phase of a host outbreak superparasitism occurs, field investigations were carried out on seasonal prevalence of the host, Papilio xuhtus, and parasitism by P. puparum in a citrus grove in Fukuoka, Japan in 1974. Host pupation occurred from May to November and the parasitoid attacked the host throughout this period. Pupal density increased rapidly after mid-August and the percentage parasitism decreased during this period. A high level of parasitism was attained after one or more parasitoid generations in mid-September. The superparasitism was observed after mid-September when the parasitoid attained extremely high density, and resulted in an increase in the proportion of males, high mortality, and a decrease in the size of the progeny.  相似文献

This study addresses the issues of infection prevalence and disease expression in two wild populations of the red algal host Mazzaella laminarioides and their variability associated with locality, season, and spatial location of the host in the intertidal zone. Our results demonstrated that Endophyton ramosum is the most frequent infective pathogen affecting M. laminarioides in Matanzas and Pucatrihue. This situation prevailed through the year and across the high-to-low intertidal gradient. Although there was a general trend for lower levels of infection in late winter and early spring, only in a few, cases was well-defined seasonality detected. Furthermore, clear seasonal patterns, as displayed by deformative disease in the high intertidal zone of Pucatrihue, were attenuated in the middle and lower intertidal zones. Differences in levels of infection in M. laminarioides between the high intertidal zones of Matanzas and Pucatrihue diminished toward the low intertidal zone. Thus, effects of seasonality and locality on infection prevalence may be influenced, at least in part, by the position of the hosts an the intertidal zone. Spatial distribution of the diseased individuals also varied along the beach. This pattern was consistent between the two sites and seemed related to wave exposure and the specific pathogen. Comparisons of the size distribution of noninfected fronds with their infected counterparts showed that infections by Endophyton ramosum and Pleurocapsa sp. more frequently affected medium-and large-sized fronds. This pattern was consistent temporally and similar in the two localities. Finally, a clear association between maturity and prevalence of infection was detected. This association resulted in most fronds of the noninfected segment of the host population being immature, whereas most mature fronds were infected. In conclusion, infectious diseases affecting the red alga Mazzaella laminarioides are a persistent phenomenon in wild populations of the host, although only a small segment of the infected populations displays the full expression of the disease. In spite of the suggested role of factors such as season, latitude, and spatial location of the host on disease prevalence and expression, additional studies are needed to understand fully the dynamics of infectious diseases in wild populations of algal hosts.  相似文献

In this paper the host‐parasite relationship between Philometra filiformis and the common pandora Pagellus erythrinus from the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea were studied. A total of 305 (257 females and 48 males) specimens of common pandora were sampled from June 2009 to April 2011 from commercial landings as well as from bottom trawl surveys. A total of 39 P. erythrinus were parasitized (mean prevalence, P = 12.80%; mean abundance, A = 0.19), with the parasite occurring throughout the study area and with wide fluctuations in prevalence values ranging from 0 to 28.60%. Prevalence increased with age of the host, with most parasites (27.78%) found in the older common pandora whereby P. filiformis parasitized only the females. A significant correlation between prevalence, abundance and maturity stages of the fish was evident, with most parasites found in mature/spawning specimens. The varying degrees of gonadic damage caused by this nematode reveal a serious threat to the reproductive success of P. erythrinus.  相似文献

1. We studied the effect of flea infestation on the pattern of tick (Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes trianguliceps) infestation on small mammals. 2. We asked (1) whether the probability of an individual host being infested by ticks was affected by its infestation of fleas (number of individuals and species) and (2) whether the abundance and prevalence of ticks in a host population was affected by the abundance, prevalence, level of aggregation, and species richness of fleas. 3. The probability of a host individual being infested by ticks was affected negatively by flea infestation. At the level of host populations, flea abundance and prevalence had a predominantly positive effect on tick infestation, whereas flea species richness had a negative effect on tick infestation. 4. The effect of flea infestation on tick infestation was generally greater in I. ricinus than in I. trianguliceps, but varied among host species. 5. It can be concluded that the effect of fleas on tick infestation of small mammals may be either negative or positive depending on the level of consideration and parameters involved. The results did not provide support for direct interactions between the two ectoparasite taxa, but suggested population and community dynamics and the defence system of the hosts as possible factors.  相似文献

The traditional explanation for the exceptional diversity of herbivorous insects emphasizes host shift as the major driver of speciation. However, phylogenetic studies have often demonstrated widespread host plant conservatism by insect herbivores, calling into question the prevalence of speciation by host shift to distantly related plants. A limitation of previous phylogenetic studies is that host plants were defined at the family or genus level; thus, it was unclear whether host shifts predominate at a finer taxonomic scale. The lack of a statistical approach to test the hypothesis of host‐shift‐driven speciation also hindered studies at the species level. Here, we analyze the radiation of leaf cone moths (Caloptilia) associated with maples (Acer) using a newly developed, phylogeny‐based method that tests the role of host shift in speciation. This method has the advantage of not requiring complete taxon sampling from an entire radiation. Based on 254 host plant records for 14 Caloptilia species collected at 73 sites in Japan, we show that major dietary changes are more concentrated toward the root of the phylogeny, with host shift playing a minor role in recent speciation. We suggest that there may be other roles for host shift in promoting herbivorous insect diversification rather than facilitating speciation per se.  相似文献

Coral reef ecosystems depend on symbiosis between dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium Freudenthal and their various hosts. The physiological characteristics associated with a particular lineage or species of Symbiodinium can determine a host's susceptibility to harmful bleaching. Therefore, the threat posed by global climate change on a host may be reduced if it can switch or shuffle its dominant algal symbiont type. An important prerequisite to this potential to switch or shuffle is the ability to host multiple alternative dominant symbiont genotypes. To examine the distribution of this trait, we review reports of mixed Symbiodinium infections in corals and nonscleractinian hosts from a phylogenetic perspective. Hosts showing evidence of mixed infection are broadly distributed across the most deeply divergent host lineages, including foraminifera, mollusks, sponges, and cnidarians. The occurrence of mixed infections is also broadly distributed across most clades of scleractinian corals. Individual colonies of certain well‐studied cosmopolitan coral genera, such as Acropora, Montastraea, and Pocillopora, yield many reports of mixed infection, while other genera, such as Porites, do not. We further discuss mixed Symbiodinium infections in the context of evolutionary ecology theory. Selection pressures that affect the prevalence of mixed infection may be exerted by variation in host environment, host ontogeny, symbiont transmission strategy, host regulation of symbiont populations, availability of free‐living symbiont lineages, competition between symbiont lineages, and niche partitioning of the internal host environment.  相似文献

Aim To use a comparative approach to understand parasite demographic patterns in native versus introduced populations, evaluating the potential roles of host invasion history and parasite life history. Location North American east and west coasts with a focus on San Francisco Bay (SFB). Methods Species richness and prevalence of trematode parasites were examined in the native and introduced ranges of two gastropod host species, Ilyanassa obsoleta and Littorina saxatilis. We divided the native range into the putative source area for introduction and areas to the north and south; we also sampled the overlapping introduced range in SFB. We dissected 14,781 snails from 103 populations and recorded the prevalence and identity of trematode parasites. We compared trematode species richness and prevalence across the hosts’ introduced and native ranges, and evaluated the influence of host availability on observed patterns. Results Relative to the native range, both I. obsoleta and L. saxatilis have escaped (lost) parasites in SFB, and L. saxatilis demonstrated a greater reduction of trematode diversity and infection prevalence than I. obsoleta. This was not due to sampling inequalities between the hosts. Instead, rarefaction curves suggested complete capture of trematode species in native source and SFB subregions, except for L. saxatilis in SFB, where infection was extremely rare. For I. obsoleta, infection prevalence of trematodes using fish definitive hosts was significantly lower in SFB compared to the native range, unlike those using bird hosts. Host availability partly explained the presence of introduced trematodes in SFB. Main conclusions Differential losses of parasite richness and prevalence for the two gastropod host species in their introduced range is probably the result of several mechanistic factors: time since introduction, propagule pressure, vector of introduction, and host availability. Moreover, the recent occurrence of L. saxatilis’ invasion and its active introduction vector suggest that its parasite diversity and distribution will probably increase over time. Our study suggests that host invasion history and parasite life history play key roles in the extent and diversity of trematodes transferred to introduced populations. Our results also provide vital information for understanding community‐level influences of parasite introductions, as well as for disease ecology in general.  相似文献

The structure of gastropod communities was examined from January to June 1999 in four sites of the streams of Mont Saint-Michel Bay along a gradient of salinity, and the occurrence of larval trematodes infecting snails was studied. Abundance and species richness of gastropods increased from polyhaline (95 snails, 1 species) to oligohaline waters (6672 snails, 6 species). Whatever the salinity, the most abundant species was Potamopyrgus antipodarum, an invasive non-indigenous species that represented 80% of the gastropods. Only one male was found in P. antipodarum populations suggesting a predominantly parthenogenetic mode of reproduction. Among 7218 gastropods collected, 1.2% were infected by larval trematodes: 5 species in Lymnaea peregra (4.4%), 4 species in Planorbis planorbis (12.0%), one echinostome in Physa acuta (0.2%), and a new species of Sanguinicola in P. antipodarum (0.5%). This is the first record of infected P. antipodarum in Europe. No parasites were found in polyhaline waters. The prevalence per host population varied from 0 to 100% depending on time of collection, salinity and host species. In the lowest-salinity site, abundance of gastropods and prevalence of trematodes were negatively correlated. The dominance of P. antipodarum in the gastropod communities is discussed in relation with euryhalinity, parthenogenesis and weak rate of parasitism.  相似文献

The fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) infects hundreds of amphibian species and is implicated in global amphibian declines. Bd is comprised of several lineages that differ in pathogenicity, thus, identifying which Bd strains are present in a given amphibian community is essential for understanding host–pathogen dynamics. The presence of Bd has been confirmed in Central Africa, yet vast expanses of this region have not yet been surveyed for Bd prevalence, and the genetic diversity of Bd is largely unknown in this part of the world. Using retrospective surveys of museum specimens and contemporary field surveys, we estimated the prevalence of Bd in Central African island and continental amphibian assemblages, and genotyped strains of Bd present in each community. Our sampling of museum specimens included just a few individuals collected in the Gulf of Guinea archipelago prior to 1998, yet one of these individuals was Bd‐positive indicating that the pathogen has been on Bioko Island since 1966. We detected Bd across all subsequent sample years in our study and found modest support for a relationship between host life history and Bd prevalence, a positive relationship between prevalence and host community species richness, and no significant relationship between elevation and prevalence. The Global Panzootic Lineage (BdGPL) was present in all the island and continental amphibian communities we surveyed. Our results are consistent with a long‐term and widespread distribution of Bd in amphibian communities of Gabon and the Gulf of Guinea archipelago.  相似文献
