Synopsis Tagged individuals of the Eastern Pacific sharpnose puffer, Canthigaster punctatissima, were studied at Punta Santa Inez, Baja California Sur. Territories were maintained by both sexes in this sexually dimorphic fish. Male puffers appear to have harems; one large male interacts with one to four smaller females. Puffers from different harems were not seen to interact except for occasional aggressive contact. Removal of a male puffer resulted in the overnight takeover of his harem by a neighboring male. Harem-forming behavior is discussed, as well as the possible role of predation.  相似文献

Synopsis Social organization and spawning in the sharpnose pufferCanthigaster rostrataere studied on a reef in the San Blas Islands, Panama. Sexes were dimorphic. In mixed coral and rubble habitat, females defended territories against other females and small males. From one to six female territories were included within the territories of certain large males. These haremic males visited their females and patrolled their territories throughout the day. Smaller, non-haremic males occupied territories or home ranges within or adjacent to those of haremic males or were wanderers. Spawning between a haremic male and a territorial female occurred within the female's territory. The female prepared an algal nest into which demersal eggs were deposited. There was no parental care. Eggs were spherical, translucent, and measured approximately 0.66 mm in diameter. Larvae were about 1.4 mm TL and closely resembled those of other species ofCanthigaster.  相似文献

Specimens ofCanthigaster rivulata (Temminck et Schlegel) were collected from Kominato and Hayama, central Japan, from May, 1985 to October, 1986. On the basis of the gonadosomatic index, gonadal histology and results of artificial fertilization of these specimens, the spawning season is considered to extend from late June to mid-September. The specimens exhibited the following dimorphic differences associated with sex: 1) The male is larger than the female. 2) Ventral side of the body is brownish orange in the male with vermiculated or reticulated patterns of bright violet, while it is white in the female. 3) The male has a well-developed skin fold along the mid-dorsal and mid-ventral lines, which is greatly elevated during courtship; whereas the female’s skin folds are not or slightly developed and conspicuous only during courtship. In an aquarium with the water temperatures of 22 to 26°C, a pair of fish spawned every four days late in the morning for three consecutive months. Courtship and spawning occurred in a pair. The male swam in front of the female, and elevated the skin folds both dorsally and ventrally, fully spreading the unpaired fins, with the ventral side of the body flashing bright blue and the dorsal side turning dark. Both fish swam in a circular fashion, elevating the skin folds. The male followed the female nudging her abdomen with his snout. Both fish turned upward, and released gametes. The eggs are spherical, 0.53–0.73 mm in diameter, demersal, adhesive, transparent, and pale yellowish orange in color, and contain a cross-shaped or asteroid cluster of oil globules. The egg membrane was thick and consisted of about 14 concentric layers. The incubation period ranged from 73.5 hours at 28.2–28.5°C to 145.0 hours at 22.1–22.4°C. The newly hatched larvae were 1.38–1.98 mm in total length (TL) with 84-11-13 = 19–21 myomeres. The yolk was absorbed when the larvae attained 1.49–2.22 mm TL, three days after hatching. The larvae were fed on oyster larvae, blue mussel larvae, sea-urchin larvae and rotifers, but all of them died in 16 days. During the embryonic and early larval stages, the only pigment cells that appeared on the body were the black chromatophores.  相似文献

A new species in the Sarcoscyphaceae from the Samoan Islands, Cookeina cremeirosea, is described and illustrated. This species is morphologically and phylogenetically distinct from the other eight species that are currently accepted for the genus. It is closely related to the Asian species Cookeina indica from which it can be separated by color and spore morphology.  相似文献

Four new species of Rhodophyceae are described from the South Pacific, with type localities in Fiji, French Polynesia and Vanuatu. Chondria bullata from the Tuamotus (French Polynesia), Vanuatu, Palmerston Atoll (Cook Islands) and Fiji is unique owing to its non‐constricted axes with markedly protruding, bubble‐like cortical cells. Halymenia nukuhivensis, from the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, is distinguished from others in the genus by its dichotomous, papery blades issued from a strap‐shaped basal region, and the equal proportion of anti‐clinal, periclinal and oblique filaments in its medullary layer. Jania articulata, so far known only from the Tuamotus in French Polynesia and Manihiki in the Northern Cook Islands, superficially resembles the genus Amphiroa with its articulated branches with numerous genicula between successive dichotomies, and its large axis diameter. Meristotheca peltata from the Fiji Islands is unique among the genus by its distinctly peltate, erect habit. The recent high number of newly described species from the South Pacific region emphasizes the need for more in‐depth surveys, particularly in deeper outer reef slope habitats, which remain for the most part unexplored and could yield particularly interesting new taxa or distributional records.  相似文献

A new aulopodid fish,Hime microps, is described after two specimens from the Nazca submarine ridge (25°43′S, 85°29′W at 160–165 m; 25°42′S, 85°24′W at 162–168 m). This species is related toH. japonica andH. curtirostris but differs in having no pyloric caeca and smaller eyes with the horizontal diameter shorter than the snout length. Specimens ofH. japonica from off Japan, the Hawaiian submarine ridge and the Tasman Sea are compared and found to be morphologically identical.  相似文献

An undescribed goby has been collected from several localities in the western troplcal Pacific, from Japan to Australia. This species is described as a new species,Fusigobius signiplnnis. It differs from other species ofFusigobius in pectoral ray counts, colouration, largely separate pelvic fins, and shape of the first dorsal fin. The species is found in groups on sand, frequently flicking its first dorsal fin. Males are larger than females in mean size. Sex ratios are uneven, and females are twice as numerous as males.  相似文献

A new tremataspidid genus Tyriaspis (type species T. whitei gen. et sp. nov.) is described from a new Upper Ludlovian locality at Ringerike, southern Norway. The genus is assigned to the subfamily Dartmuthiinae Robertson. Six specimens are known, thus allowing a fairly complete diagnosis and reconstruction of the species which has a flat head-shield with wing-like cornua and dorsal and caudal fins. The scale arrangement of the body differs from that found in typical cephalaspids.  相似文献

A new genus and species of the Hatschekiidae, Laminohatschekia synaphobranchi, is described from an eel caught off New Caledonia. It is characterised by its long ribbon-like trunk and by the possession of three pairs of biramous legs. The pennellid Sarcotretes scopeli is redescribed from a macrourid also taken off New Caledonia. Sarcotretes lobatus is recognised as a synonym of S. scopeli. Phrixocephalus carcellesi is described in detail for the first time, from the stomach contents of a King Shag caught in the Falkland Islands. A wide range of individual variability in holdfast structure was noted in P. carcellesi. A new species, Peniculisa bellwoodi, is described from Pomacentrus amboiensis collected at Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef. The sphyriid Lophoura cornuta is redescribed from a synaphobranchid eel caught off New Caledonia and both sexes of a lernanthropid, Aethon morelandi, are redescribed from Nemadactylus macropterus in southern Australia.  相似文献

Xenobrama microlepis gen. et sp. nov. is described on the basis of 17 adult and subadult specimens collected by surface gill nets, bottom trawl and midwater trawl from the subantarctic waters of the South Pacific Ocean. This monotypic new genus is distinguished from other bramid genera by the following characters: inner lower edges of mandible touching each other (except near symphysis); gill rakers short, thick, and stout; subpectoral region very narrow; interpelvic space flat and wide; vertebrae 49–51; and scales in longitudinal series more than 83. The new taxon is widely distributed in the high seas of the South Pacific, 38–54°S, 79–176°W, but is rather rare compared toBrama spp. in catches of drift gill nets.  相似文献

Three sphaerodorid species new to science are described from a manganese nodule area in abyssal depths of around 4150 m in the Peru Basin in the eastern South Pacific. Sphaerodoridium campanulata sp. n. is isolated within the genus, having, apart from spherical macrotubercles, additional dorsal stalked bell-shaped papillae, not previously described. Sphaerodoropsis discolis sp. n. is a species with four rows of dorsal macrotubercles and two pairs of lateral antennae. Sphaerodoropsis translucida sp. n. has six to seven rows of dorsal macrotubercles arrayed in two transverse rows per segment and two pairs of lateral antennae. A brief discussion points to the close relationship between Clavodorum and Sphaerodoridium, and to the present state of Sphaerodoropsis, being inhomogeneous in the characters of the arrangement of the dorsal macrotubercles and the numbers of the lateral antennae. An overview on the latter genus, with an attempt to subdivide it, is given.  相似文献

Nine new species of carnivorous sponges, namely Cladorhiza segonzaci , Chondrocladia koltuni , Chondrocladia lampadiglobus , Asbestopluma agglutinans , Asbestopluma ( Helophloeina ) formosa , Abyssocladia huitzilopochtli , Abyssocladia inflata , Abyssocladia dominalba and Abyssocladia naudur , are described. The subgenus Helophloeina Topsent, 1929 and the genus Abyssocladia Lévi, 1964 are revived and redefined, with an identification key for Abyssocladia which at present includes seven species. Eight of the sponges were collected from the French IFREMER manned submersible Nautile near active hydrothermal sites of the East Pacific Rise and of the North Fiji and Lau Basins, one from the Russian submersible Mir 2 in the Northwest Pacific near Bering Island, and one from the US submersible Alvin south of Easter Island. Their life conditions are described from direct observations from the submersibles. Some remarks are presented on the taxonomy of Cladorhizidae and more generally of carnivorous Poecilosclerida. The study suggests a very high degree of diversity in the deep Pacific carnivorous sponges.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 148 , 553–584.  相似文献
