The lizard family Chameleonidae is one of the most distinctive taxa of all vertebrates. Nonetheless, despite great intrafamilial diversity, little research has been conducted on morphological variation among chameleons. As a first step in this direction, we took morphological measurements on the head, limbs, spines, and tail of 56 species. Our goals were to investigate whether morphological variation correlates with differences in ecology and to examine whether correlations exist among different aspects of morphology. Based on existing information, species were classified either as arboreal or terrestrial, the latter referring to species that are known to use the ground on a regular basis. This study confirms that considerable intrafamilial variation exists among chameleons and that these traits appear to be evolutionarily quite labile. Once the effects of size are removed, functionally related traits tend to covary; however, few correlations are observed between non-functionally related traits. Many differences in the lengths of the limbs and head elements were detected between terrestrial and arboreal species, but the functional and selective significance of these differences is not clear. Goodman, S.M., Tello, J.G. & Langrand, O. 2000. Patterns of mor-phological and biochemical variation in Acracephalus newtoni on Madagascar. Ostrich 71(3&4): 367-370. The endemic Madagascar Swamp-Warbler, Acrocephalus newtoni, generally occurs in lowland or upper mid-elevation (to c. 1800 m) aquatic habitats associated with slow-moving river, stagnant marshes and swamps in most regions of the island. In 1995, a population of swamp-warbler was found above tree-line in a dry ericoid zone of vegetation on the Andringitra Massif (at 2050 m) in south-central Madagascar, a very different habitat from that typically occupied by A. newtoni. Given the typical habitat specificity of members of the genus Acrocephalus, we expected the Andringitra birds to show differences at the specific level in comparison to marsh-dwelling A. newtoni. Using morphological and molecular characters it was found that the Andringitra population cannot be differentiated from typical A. newton.  相似文献

Patterns of variation in five morphological traits in cardueline finches were analysed. Among species, bill characters were the most and tail length the least variable. Species differed primarily in terms of body size, whereas genera differed in terms of bill size. Cardueline finches were far less variable compared with the amount of variation expected under a model of neutral random drift. This indicates that this group of birds is under strong stabilizing selection pressure. This could conform to models of stasis where populations are thought to travel only between adjacent adaptive peaks separated by shallow valleys. Changes in body size are correlated with speciation, whereas changes in bill morphology are correlated with divergences leading to the erection of new genera.  相似文献

KORDOFANI, M. & INGROUILLE, M., 1991. Patterns of morphological variation in the Acacia species (Mimosaceae) of northern Sudan. A numerical taxonomic review has been carried out on the morphology of northern Sudanese Acacia species. Fifty-one characters were scored from 12 species sampled at 12 sites. There is evidence of large scale population variation. Within a single site species are distinct but a comparison of plants between different sites may obscure species differences. Each species has a peculiar local variant in each sampled site, even when sites are separated by only a few kilometres. The possible significance of this pattern of variation is discussed. Species complexes are delineated and useful species diagnostics described.  相似文献

Many studies have focused on tail ornamentation in birds, but not all tail shapes have been studied in depth. Graduated and pin tails have received less attention than forked tails, despite being more likely, in terms of aerodynamic theory, to be honest signals. We report morphological variation in live specimens of two sexually dimorphic passerines from the same site with different tail shapes: graduated (Cape sugarbird Promerops cafer ) and pin (orange-breasted sunbird Antobaphes violacea ). Coefficients of variation (CVs) were calculated for all morphological traits, both non-ornamental (range 1.91–5.72) and ornamental (range 5.83–21.71). Males and females did not differ in CV for any non-ornamental trait. Ornamental traits in males of both species were significantly more variable than all non-ornamental traits. Cape sugarbird ornamental traits were significantly more variable than those of orange-breasted sunbirds. The high levels of variation in graduated tails relative to pintails suggest that these traits have been driven mainly by sexual selection. Intra- and inter-population variability was studied in three species of tropical African estrildid finches comprising the genus Pyrenestes. Eleven characters were measured on P. ostrinus captured on a study area in Cameroon. Most of these same characters were also measured on museum specimens of this species and P. saguineus and P. minor. Data were analysed using univariate and multivariate statistical methods in order to characterize variation within and between populations and species.
Variation in all three species of Pyrenestes is greatest in bill size, resulting from an exceptional non-sex-linked polymorphism. Bill size differences between morphs are as high as between congeneric species, with extremely large coefficients of variation, while other body characters show comparatively little variation. Sexual dimorphisms and differences in size due to age occur, but contribute little to overall size variation. Distributions of bill characters in each age and sex class are bimodal or greatly skewed, and in some geographical regions tend to be trimodal. Distributions of other body characters tend not to be significantly different from normal. Bill morphs differ in both shape and size and may be separated using principal component analysis. Static allometries of bill morphs differ significantly: relative to body size, bill size increases more rapidly in the large morph. Bill size and shape also vary geographically. The three species differ in mean size but show much overlap. Bill size is negatively correlated with total annual rainfall. In regions characterized by ecotonal transition zones between forest and savanna, tentative evidence suggests that a third, yet larger bill mode occurs. This third mode apparently results from the presence of a distinct larger species of hard-seeded sedge found only in these regions. The taxonomic implications of the polymorphism are discussed.  相似文献

长期以来人们一直认为,外来种入侵及其危害是由于一个物种从原产地到入侵地其环境因子改变(如天敌压力的减弱等)而导致的。近年来,越来越多的研究者开始认识到,生物入侵过程实际上是一个现代人类活动影响下的物种的快速进化过程,生物入侵的进化遗传学已成为入侵生物学研究中最活跃的分支之一。作者比较了来自原产地(阿根廷)和入侵地(中国和美国)的喜旱莲子草(Alternantheraphiloxeroides)的11个种群在茎、叶解剖结构方面的变异式样,发现所研究的19个性状在原产地(阿根廷)和入侵地(中国和美国)的变异情况明显不同:在原产地种群中,共有9个性状指标存在显著差异,遗传率在49–89%之间,这9个性状是气孔密度、气孔指数、茎直径、髓腔直径、维管柱直径、皮层厚度、维管柱面积比、髓腔面积比和叶形指数;而在入侵地种群间,19个性状指标均无明显差异。这表明喜旱莲子草从原产地到入侵地其遗传多样性降低;入侵地喜旱莲子草种群间的形态变异主要为表型可塑性。根据19个形态指标对喜旱莲子草11个种群进行主成分分析和聚类,结果显示:所有入侵地种群和原产地的Ar1种群(SantaFé,59°49′W,29°16′S)聚为一类,原产地的Ar4(Tandil,59°03′W,37°11′S)单独聚为一类,原产地的其他4个种群聚为一类。表明Ar1种群可能与入侵中国的喜旱莲子草在基因型上更为接近。这一结果为进一步揭示喜旱莲子草入侵机理(如杂交适应性)和在原产地寻求对应天敌的生物防治工作提供了基础数据。  相似文献

Abstract Selenomonas ruminantium (strain I10) isolated from the ovine rumen showed considerable morphological variation and lack of motility when cultured in a phosphate-limited chemostat in the presence of high levels of glucose (55.5 mM). Transmission electron microscopy showed that some of these variants were capable of producing daughter cells with a typical selenomonad morphology but lacking flagella.
The reduction of the levels of glucose (27.8 mM) in the media caused the numbers of cells exhibiting variation to decrease, with a corresponding increase in motile cells possessing a typical selenomonad morphology. The removal of trypticase from the media had no effect on the morphology or motility of the cells.
During the initial stages of changeover to reduced glucose levels variants could be found in the chemostat which were flagellate. The flagellae were consistently attached to a concave section of the cells.  相似文献

Material from 45 populations representing 15 species of Bellevalia were analyzed as to chromosome numbers and morphology. For 3 species reports are new, viz. for B. clusiana (2x), B, tauri (2x, 4x), and B. nivalis (4x). In B. saviczii diploids, tetraploids and hexaploids were found. The basic Bellevalia karyotype prevails, but chromosome heteromorphism is rather common at the populational level. B–chromosomes were found in some populations of B. glauca s.l. and B. saviczii. Discussions on karyotype variation, polyploidy, morphologic variation and generic delimitation are presented.  相似文献

Diverse self-incompatibility (SI) mechanisms permit flowering plants to inhibit fertilization by pollen that express specificities in common with the pistil. Characteristic of at least two model systems is greatly reduced recombination across large genomic tracts surrounding the S-locus, which regulates SI. In three angiosperm families, including the Solanaceae, the gene that controls the expression of gametophytic SI in the pistil encodes a ribonuclease (S-RNase). The gene that controls pollen SI expression is currently unknown, although several candidates have recently been proposed. Although each candidate shows a high level of polymorphism and complete allelic disequilibrium with the S-RNase gene, such properties may merely reflect tight linkage to the S-locus, irrespective of any functional role in SI. We analyzed the magnitude and nature of nucleotide variation, with the objective of distinguishing likely candidates for regulators of SI from other genes embedded in the S-locus region. We studied the S-RNase gene of the Solanaceae and 48A, a candidate for the pollen gene in this system, and we also conducted a parallel analysis of the regulators of sporophytic SI in Brassica, a system in which both the pistil and pollen genes are known. Although the pattern of variation shown by the pollen gene of the Brassica system is consistent with its role as a determinant of pollen specificity, that of 48A departs from expectation. Our analysis further suggests that recombination between 48A and S-RNase may have occurred during the interval spanned by the gene genealogy, another indication that 48A may not regulate SI expression in pollen.  相似文献

This work presents a statistical and numerical analysis of the patterns of morphological variation of the cultivated variants of henequén (Agave fourcroydes Lem.) presently found in the Mexican state of Yucatan and of the wild populations of A. angustifolia Haw., its putative progenitor. This is the first step in the study of the intrageneric genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships. The study indicated that: (1) There exists a significant discontinuation in morphological variation corresponding to the cultivated variants of traditionally recognized henequén: Sac Ki, Yaax Ki, and Kitam Ki, and to three possible ecotypes of A. angustifolia Haw.: Coastal Dunes, Tropical Deciduous Forest, and Tropical Subdeciduous Forest. (2) Sac Ki and Yaax Ki differ from wild populations in four syndromes of domestication: gigantism, greater fibrosity, less thorniness, and less reproductive capacity. The lower coefficient of variation of their characteristics compared with the wild populations suggests less genetic diversity. This fact, and the disappearance of four out of the seven variants existing early in this century, indicate a dramatic genetic erosion of this crop. (3) Kitam Ki is the cultivated variant more similar to wild ones. Differences with them suggest recent introduction and an artificial selection process with different direction and intensity than the other cultivated variants. (4) A tendency from more to less is observed for characteristics indicating degree of domestication: Sac Ki, Yaax Ki, and Kitam Ki. (5) The differences among the possible wild ecotypes may be associated with the soil conditions and precipitation.  相似文献

Populations of annual killifish of the genus Nothobranchius occur in patchily distributed temporary pools in the East African savannah. Their fragmented distribution and low dispersal ability result in highly structured genetic clustering of their populations. In this study, we examined body shape variation in a widely distributed species, Nothobranchius orthonotus with known phylogeographic structure. We tested whether genetic divergence of major mitochondrial lineages forming two candidate species is congruent with phenotypic diversification, using linear and geometric morphometry analyses of body shape in 23 wild populations. We also conducted a common‐garden experiment with two wild‐derived populations to control for the effect of local environmental conditions on body shape. We identified different allometric trajectories for different mitochondrial lineages and candidate species in both sexes. However, in a principal components analysis of population‐level body shape, the separation among mitochondrial lineages was incomplete. Higher similarity of mitochondrial lineages belonging to different candidate species than that of same candidate species prevented distinction of the two candidate species on the basis of body shape. Analysis at the individual level demonstrated that N. orthonotus express high intrapopulation variability, with major overlap among individuals from all populations. In conclusion, we suggest that N. orthonotus be considered as a single species with an extensive geographic range, strong population genetic structure and high morphological variability.  相似文献

A collection of dicroceolid flukes from rats, squirrels and Tupaia in Malaysia is found to be morphologically heterogeneous. Cluster analysis on the basis of three selected body ratios distinguishes two major types comprising highly diverse Skrjabinus from rats, and homogenous Zonorchis from callosciurid squirrels. Tupaia harbours flukes of both genera. Analysis of variance of flukes from rats, demonstrates marked uniformity among worms within individual hosts. Possible effects of allometric growth are investigated by plotting each chosen dimension against body length for the two major groups of worms. Prominent changes are noted only in the relative size of testis in Skrjabinus from rats. Patterns of morphology are discussed in relation to host ecology and distribution.  相似文献

Patterns of allozyme variation have been investigated in 101 clones representing most of the morphological variation (and taxa) found in the amphi-apomictic genus Pilosella Hill. in the Nordic countries. Levels of variation were very high, both within narrowly defined taxa and within the whole data-set, but the correlation between a morphology-based taxonomy and patterns of allozyme variation was very weak. Almost all enzyme bands were found in more than one taxon and the differences between broadly defined species in terms of the frequency of bands were generally small. Cluster analyses did not perfectly recover any taxon but there were some tendencies for samples of some broadly defined taxa (e.g. P. officinarum s. l., and P. cymosa ssp. cymosa) to cluster together. It is concluded that there is considerable gene-flow among virtually all Nordic morpho-types of Pilosella and this is considered an argument for applying a very broad species concept in this genus.Financial support for the present study has been recieved from Stiftelsen Harald E.
