A large number of studies have shown growing interest in the zinc (Zn) levels of serum and hair samples collected from patients with Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), an endemic chronic osteochondral disease. However, inconsistent conclusions regarding the serum and hair Zn levels have been made. The aim of this study is to assess and to explore the change in serum and hair Zn levels among KBD patients. Multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database and Technology of Chongqing (VIP), were carefully searched for available studies up to January 13, 2017 in this integrated analysis. Standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated using STATA 11.0. A total of 18 studies, involving 978 KBD cases and 1116 healthy controls, were collected in this analysis. Pooled analysis found the KBD patients had a higher hair Zn level and a lower serum Zn level than the healthy controls (hair Zn (μg/g), SMD = 0.030, 95% CI = ?0.315, 0.376; serum Zn (mg/L), SMD = ?0.069, 95%CI = ?0.924, 0.785). Meta-regression method and sensitivity analysis were utilized to analyze the heterogeneity of data. Positive correlations were separately identified between hair Zn level in KBD patients (r = 0.4639, P = 0.032) and controls (r = 0.4743, P = 0.012) and the survey year. No evidence of publication bias was observed. The available results suggest that increased hair Zn level and decreased serum Zn level are commonly found in KBD patients; however, the role of Zn in the etiology and pathogenesis of KBD could not yet be confirmed.  相似文献

The present study aimed to determine the serum trace elements (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg)) along with erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity and effect of intervention with safe drinking water for 5 years in the school children of fluorosis endemic area. For this purpose, three categories of villages were selected based on drinking water fluoride (F): Category I (control, F?=?1.68 mg/L), category II (affected F?=?3.77 mg/L), and category III (intervention village) where initial drinking water F was 4.51 mg/L, and since the last 5 years, they were drinking water containing <?1.0 mg/L F. The results revealed that urinary F was significantly (P?<?0.05) higher in category II compared to categories I and III. A significant (P?<?0.05) increase in serum Cu and Mg was observed in category II compared to category I. Serum Zn and Ca was significantly (P?<?0.05) decreased in categories II and III compared to category I. The erythrocyte CA activity was decreased in the category II compared to category I. However, in the category III, erythrocyte CA activity was comparable to the control group. In conclusion, F exposure altered elemental homeostasis which has restored to some extent on intervention by safe drinking water for 5 years in school-going children.  相似文献

Little is known about hair minerals in cancer patients, and serum iron level has been shown to be elevated in breast cancer patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate hair iron and hair minerals’ level related to hair iron in breast cancer patients compared to controls. We compared hair mineral analysis data of 40 breast cancer subjects with age and body mass index-matched normal control data (n?=?144) by cross-sectional analysis. All breast cancer patients were newly diagnosed at one Breast Cancer Center in Ajou University and had their hair cut before anti-cancer chemotherapy, and the normal controls (without breast cancer) also had their hair cut for various reasons in out-patient clinics of the Department of Family Practice and Community Health. Breast cancer patients had low calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, whereas they had high arsenic, sodium, and potassium compared with the normal control. The hair iron level was positively correlated with hair calcium (r?=?0.761, P?<?0.001), magnesium (r?=?0.643, P?<?0.001), and manganese (r?=?0.550, P?<?0.001) and negatively correlated with arsenic (r?=??0.537, P?<?0.001). The hair iron level was significantly associated with the hair calcium (β?=?0.778, P?<?0.001) and manganese (β?=?0.240, P?<?0.001) by using multiple linear regression analysis. We observed different hair mineral patterns in breast cancer patients compared to normal controls. Especially, hair iron level was significantly reduced and associated with hair calcium and manganese levels.  相似文献

Health risk for well drinking water is a worldwide problem. Our recent studies showed increased toxicity by exposure to barium alone (≤700 µg/L) and coexposure to barium (137 µg/L) and arsenic (225 µg/L). The present edition of WHO health-based guidelines for drinking water revised in 2011 has maintained the values of arsenic (10 µg/L) and barium (700 µg/L), but not elements such as manganese, iron and zinc. Nevertheless, there have been very few studies on barium in drinking water and human samples. This study showed significant correlations between levels of arsenic and barium, but not its homologous elements (magnesium, calcium and strontium), in urine, toenail and hair samples obtained from residents of Jessore, Bangladesh. Significant correlation between levels of arsenic and barium in well drinking water and levels in human urine, toenail and hair samples were also observed. Based on these results, a high-performance and low-cost adsorbent composed of a hydrotalcite-like compound for barium and arsenic was developed. The adsorbent reduced levels of barium and arsenic from well water in Bangladesh and Vietnam to <7 µg/L within 1 min. Thus, we have showed levels of arsenic and barium in humans and propose a novel remediation system.  相似文献

Arterial stiffness is involved in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease, and the degree of arterial stiffness is associated with the extent of vascular calcification. This study aimed to investigate the association of hair calcium levels with augmentation index (AIx), a simple, non-invasive measurement for arterial stiffness. Healthy Koreans (male, n?=?34, female, n?=?70) were enrolled in this study. Anthropometric parameters, lipid profiles, fasting glucose, hair mineral levels, and AIx were measured. Pearson/partial correlations and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between hair calcium levels and AIx. AIx positively correlated with hair calcium levels (r?=?0.275, p?=?0.005), age (r?=?0.283, p?=?0.004), systolic blood pressure (r?=?0.282, p?=?0.004), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (r?=?0.255, p?=?0.009), and hair magnesium (r?=?0.196, p?=?0.046), and negatively correlated with heart rate (r?=?-0.563, p?<?0.001) and fasting glucose (r?=?-0.262, p?=?0.005). Hair calcium levels significantly correlated with hair magnesium (r?=?0.926, p?<?0.001). Significant relationship between AIx and hair calcium levels was maintained after adjustment for sex, age, height, hear rate, blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, fasting glucose, and hair magnesium (r?=?0.244, p?=?0.018). Logistic regression model showed that AIx increased with the increment of hair calcium levels; log-AIx increased by 0.403% (95% CI: 0.139–0.515, p?=?0.001) per unit change in log-hair calcium level (sex-adjusted). After adjustment for all the variables above together with triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, increased significance of the association was 0.513% (p?=?0.016)]. This study supports the presence of the independent positive relationship between hair calcium levels and AIx. It suggests the possibility that hair calcium levels may be a useful index for reflecting arterial stiffness.  相似文献

Nutritional deficiencies of trace elements are among the top ten causes of death in Sub Saharan Africa. In Kanam Local Government Area of Nigeria, the problem is compounded by high levels of poverty and illiteracy. Abnormally low hair zinc levels are important, sensitive diagnostic biochemical indices of Zinc deficiency. The purpose of this study is to assess the zinc status of children less than 5 years in Kanam local government area, north-central Nigeria, by measuring the zinc level in hair samples collected from 44 under-5 children across the area. A household survey was made to assess the pattern and frequency of consumption of zinc-rich foods which was done by means of questionnaire. Hair samples were analysed for zinc content by the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrophotometry (ICP-MS). The data were analysed statistically using the Student’s t test, z test, and Pearson correlation, while questionnaire-captured data were analysed by simple arithmetic. The results of the analyses showed that the average hair zinc level was 74.35 ± 48.05 μg/g. This was below the normal range of 130–140 μg/g, for children less than 5 years. Based on the results, 86.36% have hair zinc level below the lower limit of the normal range of 130 μg/g. Between the gender, boys have higher hair zinc content than girls. Data from the questionnaire showed that 53.45% of the population studied have poor/inadequate intake of zinc-rich foods of animal origin, a dietary behaviour reported to predispose to micronutrient deficiency, including zinc.  相似文献

ObjectiveMale pattern androgenetic alopecia is characterized by progressive hair loss from the scalp. It is known that imbalances of some trace elements play a role in the pathomechanism of many forms of alopecia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of zinc and copper in hair, serum and urine samples of Turkish males with male pattern androgenetic alopecia and to compare with healthy controls.Material and methods116 males with male pattern androgenetic alopecia and 100 controls were involved in this study.ResultsLevels of zinc and copper in hair were decreased significantly in the patients (p < 0.05), although zinc and copper levels of serum and urine were not different between patients and controls (p > 0.05). Body mass index of patients were higher than control group. In addition, in the group with body mass index of 25 and lower zinc level in hair and urine, copper level in serum were significantly higher (p < 0.05). Body mass index was negatively correlated with hair zinc levels.ConclusionWe thought that decreased zinc and copper levels in hair may play a role in the etiology of male pattern androgenetic alopecia. In addition, obesity by making changes in the balance of the trace elements in hair, serum and urine may play a role in male pattern androgenetic alopecia. Hence, assessing the levels of trace elements in hair of male pattern androgenetic alopecia patients may be more valuable compared to serum and urine for treatment planning.  相似文献

BackgroundMercury is an established environmental toxicant reported to cause reproductive disorders in women, however, its direct action on myometrial activity is yet to be understood. Earlier we have reported the underlying mechanism of mercury-induced myometrial contractions following in vitro exposure; however, no such information on the effect of mercury on myometrial activity following in vivo exposure is available, therefore, the present study was undertaken.ObjectivePresent study was designed to evaluate the effect of mercury on myometrial activity following in vivo exposure of rats and unravel the possible underlying mechanism.MethodsFemale Wistar rats were orally exposed to mercury (5, 50 and 500 μg/L in drinking water) for 28 days to investigate the toxicodynamics of mercuric chloride (HgCl2)-induced alterations in myometrial activity. Response of the isolated myometrial strips to different spasmogens was recorded using polyphysiograph. Blood and uterine calcium, mercury, iron and zinc levels were estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Blood biochemicals and serum hormonal profiles (estradiol, progesterone) were also determined.ResultsNo systemic toxicity of mercury was observed in any of the treatment groups (5, 50 and 500 μg/L) in terms of alterations in body weight, organ weights, blood biochemical parameters including hormonal profile. Interestingly, mercury at 5 μg/L concentration significantly increased the receptor-dependent (PGF-induced) and receptor-independent (CaCl2-induced and high K+-depolarizing solution-induced) myometrial contractions and it was coupled with corresponding increase in the uterine calcium levels. However, mercury at higher dose levels (50 and 500 μg/L) did not significantly alter the myometrial response.ConclusionOur results evidently suggest that mercury at low level (5 μg/L) produced detrimental effect on myometrial activity by altering calcium entry into the smooth muscle and/or the release of calcium from intracellular stores without causing any apparent systemic toxicity in rats.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) in underground water (UGW), bottled mineral water (BMW), and domestic treated water (DTW) with related to risk of kidney stones. The water samples were collected from different areas of Sindh, Pakistan. The scalp hair samples of both genders, age ranged 30–60 years, consuming different types of water, have or have not kidney disorders, were selected. The Ca and Mg concentrations were determined in scalp hair of study subjects and water by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The Ca and Mg contents in different types of drinking water, UGW, DTW, and BMW, were found in the range of 79.1–466, 23.7–140, and 45–270 mg/L and 4.43–125, 5.23–39.6, and 7.16–51.3 mg/L, respectively. It was observed that Ca concentration in the scalp hair samples of kidney stone patients consuming different types of drinking water was found to be higher (2,895–4721 μg/g) while Mg level (84.3–101 μg/g) was lower as compare to referents subjects (2,490–2,730 μg/g for Ca, 107–128 μg/g for Mg) in both genders. The positive correlation was found between Ca and Mg levels in water with related to kidney stone formations in population, especially who consumed underground water. A relative risk and odd ratio were calculated; the relative risk had a strong positive association with incidence of kidney stone which depends on types of drinking water.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to understand the influence of zinc on bone mineral metabolism in prednisolone-treated rats. Disturbance in bone mineral metabolism was induced in rats by subjecting them to prednisolone treatment for a period of 8 weeks. Female rats aged 6–8 weeks weighing 150 to 200 g were divided into four treatment groups, viz., normal control, prednisolone-treated (40 mg/kg body weight orally, thrice a week), zinc-treated (227 mg/L in drinking water, daily), and combined prednisolone?+?zinc-treated groups. Parameters such as changes in mineral levels in the bone and serum, bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone 99m-technetium-labeled methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) uptake were studied in various treatment groups. Prednisolone treatment caused an appreciable decrease in calcium levels both in the bone and serum and also in bone dry weight, BMC, and BMD in rats. Prednisolone-treated rats when supplemented with zinc showed further reduction in calcium levels, bone dry weight, BMD, and BMC. The study therefore revealed that moderate intake of zinc as a nutritional supplement during steroid therapy could enhance calcium deficiency in the body and accelerate bone loss.  相似文献

A study was made of the concentrations of lead, zinc and calcium in Dendrobaena rubina (Savigny) taken at different times of the year and at three different sites. Lead levels in earthworms reflected the levels in the soils and the highest concentrations occurred in the winter months. Zinc appeared to be unrelated to soil levels at the site where the level of zinc in the soil was high. At the sites with lower levels of zinc in the soil the lowest concentration of zinc in earthworms was found in November. Earthworm calcium values were inversely proportional to the soil levels but monthly variations were inconsistent. There was a good correlation in earthworms between lead and calcium at the sites with high levels of lead in the soil. The concentration of metal in D. rubida is discussed in relation to seasonal changes, regulation and lead/calcium antagonism.  相似文献

Mineral deficiencies can cause impaired insulin release and insulin resistance. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between hair mineral concentrations and insulin resistance in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). A total of 456 subjects (161 patients with MS and 295 subjects without MS) were reviewed, and fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, homeostasis assessment model-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and hair mineral concentrations were analyzed. While hair sodium and potassium concentrations were significantly higher, the hair calcium, magnesium, and zinc concentrations were lower in the MS group than in the control group. Regarding toxic element measurements, the hair arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) concentrations were higher in the MS group than in the control group. The results of multiple regression analysis, after adjusting for age, showed significant relationships between the Na/Mg and Ca/P ratios and HOMA-IR (R 2?=?0.109, p?<?0.05). The Ca, Na, K, and B concentrations were also associated with HOMA-IR (R 2?=?0.116, p?<?0.05). The hair Na concentration was significantly associated with MS, even after adjusting for age, visceral adipose tissue, and HOMA-IR (OR 1.020; 95 % CI 1.001–1.040; p?=?0.036). Our findings suggest that hair mineral concentrations, such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium, and potassium concentrations, may play a role in the development of insulin resistance.  相似文献

Effects of altered dietary zinc on levels of zinc, copper, magnesium, and calcium in organ and peripheral tissues were studied. When rats fed a zinc-deficient diet (1.3 μg Zn/g) for 28 d were compared with rats fed a control diet (37.5 μg Zn/g), levels of zinc were slightly lower in plasma, hair, and skin and 50% lower in femur and pancreas, whereas the levels of copper were higher in all tissue except plasma. Magnesium levels were higher than controls in the heart and lower in the spleen, whereas the calcium levels were lower in plasma, lung, spleen, kidney, and skin and strikingly higher in brain, hair, and femur. When rats fed a zinc-supplemented diet (1.0 mg Zn/g) were compared to the same conrols, levels of zinc in these were higher in all organs and peripheral tissues studied, except heart, lung, and liver; copper levels were higher in liver, kidney, and spleen; magnesium levels were significantly higher in the spleen, but were little affected in other tissues, although calcium levels were higher in pancreas, spleen, kidney, and skin and lower in plasma and hair. These data indicate that overall copper organ and peripheral tissue levels are affected inversely, and zinc and calcium levels directly, by zinc nutriture.  相似文献

Metals perform important functions in the normal physiological system, and alterations in their levels may lead to a number of diseases. Aluminium (Al) has been implicated as a major risk factor, which is linked to several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. On the other hand, zinc (Zn) is considered as a neuromodulator and an essential dietary element that regulates a number of biological activities in our body. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Zn supplementation, if any, in ameliorating the changes induced by Al on calcium signalling pathway. Male Sprague Dawley rats weighing 140–160 g were divided into four different groups viz.: normal control, aluminium treated (100 mg/kg b.wt./day via oral gavage), zinc treated (227 mg/l in drinking water) and combined aluminium and zinc treated. All the treatments were carried out for a total duration of 8 weeks. Al treatment decreased the Ca2+ ATPase activity whereas increased the levels of 3′, 5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate, intracellular calcium and total calcium content in both the cerebrum and cerebellum, which, however, were modulated upon Zn supplementation. Al treatment exhibited a significant elevation in the protein expressions of phospholipase C, inositol triphosphate and protein kinase A but decreased the expression of protein kinase C, which, however, was reversed upon Zn co-treatment. Al treatment also revealed alterations in neurohistoarchitecture in the form of calcium deposits, which were improved upon zinc co-administration. The present study, therefore, suggests that zinc regulates the intracellular calcium signalling pathway during aluminium-induced neurodegeneration.  相似文献

Evaluation of a method to measure long term cortisol levels   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
IntroductionElevated levels of cortisol are known to induce various symptoms and diseases, e.g. abdominal obesity, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Measuring serum, saliva and urine cortisol is limited to one time point. Measurement of cortisol in scalp hair is a recently developed method to measure long term cortisol levels. The aim of this study was to investigate whether hair cortisol is a feasible parameter to measure cortisol exposure.ExperimentalWe collected hair samples of 195 healthy individuals, 9 hypercortisolemic and one hypocortisolemic patient and measured hair cortisol levels. Cortisol was extracted from scalp hair using methanol and cortisol levels were measured using a salivary ELISA kit. Measurement of waist and hip circumferences and blood pressure was performed in 46 healthy subjects.ResultsWe found a positive correlation between hair cortisol and both waist circumference (r = 0.392, p = 0.007) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (r = 0.425, p = 0.003). No correlations were found between hair cortisol levels and BMI, blood pressure or age. There was no decline in cortisol levels in six consecutive hair segments. Hair cortisol levels were elevated in patients with known hypercortisolism (p < 0.0001).ConclusionsHair cortisol was positively correlated with WHR, suggesting that hair cortisol reflects cortisol exposure at tissue level, which was also supported by elevated hair cortisol levels in hypercortisolemic patients and concordance between hair cortisol levels and clinical disease course. Cortisol levels in hair are slightly influenced by hair treatment but not by natural hair colour, use of hair products, gender or age.  相似文献

Zinc concentrations in the dorsal horn of spinal cord are important for wound healing, neurological function, and reproduction. However, the response of the spinal cord to alterations in dietary zinc is unknown in rats after spinal cord injury (SCI). The current study explored cellular zinc levels and zinc transporter 1 (ZnT1) expression in the dorsal horn of spinal cord with different dietary zinc after SCI. A hundred and forty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham-operated group (30?mg Zn/kg), zinc-high dietary SCI model group (ZH, 180?mg Zn/kg), zinc-adequate dietary SCI model group (30?mg Zn/kg), and marginal zinc-deficient dietary SCI model group (MZD, 5?mg Zn/kg). To test the hypothesis that dietary zinc may regulate role of ZnT1 expression in dorsal horn after acute SCI, we traced ZnT1 proteins and zinc ions with immunohistochemistry, western blot, and autometallography. Zinc and ZnT1 levels of the dorsal horn in ZH significantly increased after surgery (P?<?0.05), reached peak level (P?<?0.05) on the seventh day, and subsequently levels of their expression began to decrease. But zinc levels and ZnT1 expression of spinal cord in MZD dietary groups decreased (P?<?0.05) in SCI. There was a positive correlation between ZnT1 protein and zinc content in spinal cord (R?=?0.49880, P?=?0.0492). We found that both zinc and ZnT1 expressions in spinal cord are regulated by dietary zinc. These results indicate that dietary zinc may regulate the expression of ZnT1 in the dorsal horn of spinal cord after SCI. ZnT1 may, at the same time, play a significant role in the maintenance of zinc homeostasis in SCI.  相似文献

Mineral balance was studied by metabolic balance techniques in 13 healthy college females aged 21–23 yr. They were fed diet containing 1780 kcal, 2580 kcal, and 25 g protein in a 20-d experiment period. Both diets contained approximately 5.28 mg zinc, 216.85 mg calcium, and 364.3 mg magnesium. The diet consisted of habitually consumed foods. Blood, urine and fecal samples were collected for mineral analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Plasma mineral levels were not affected by the change in dietary energy intake. Fecal calcium and magnesium were significantly higher when subjects were fed the low calorie (1780 kcal) diet, whereas there was no significant difference in fecal zinc for the two levels of dietary energy. Urinary calcium and magnesium were also significantly higher when the diet provided 1780 kcal though, on the other hand, urinary zinc was significantly higher when the diet provided 2680 kcal (P<0.05). Urinary calcium and magnesium correlated negatively, whereas urinary zinc correlated positively, with the dietary energy intake (P o<0.05). Dietary energy intake has a significant effect on the mineral balance of the subjects.  相似文献

The extensive use of depleted uranium (DU) in today's society results in the increase of the number of human population exposed to this radionuclide. The aim of this work was to investigate in vivo the effects of a chronic exposure to DU on vitamin D3 metabolism, a hormone essential in mineral and bone homeostasis. The experiments were carried out in rats after a chronic contamination for 9 months by DU through drinking water at 40 mg/L (1 mg/rat/day). This dose corresponds to the double of highest concentration found naturally in Finland. In DU-exposed rats, the active vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D3) plasma level was significantly decreased. In kidney, a decreased gene expression was observed for cyp24a1, as well as for vdr and rxrα, the principal regulators of CYP24A1. Similarly, mRNA levels of vitamin D target genes ecac1, cabp-d28k and ncx-1, involved in renal calcium transport were decreased in kidney. In the brain lower levels of messengers were observed for cyp27a1 as well as for lxrβ, involved in its regulation. In conclusion, this study showed for the first time that DU affects both the vitamin D active form (1,25(OH)2D3) level and the vitamin D receptor expression, and consequently could modulate the expression of cyp24a1 and vitamin D target genes involved in calcium homeostasis.  相似文献

The relationship of copper and zinc status with blood pressure in young adults was studied (N=59). Copper and zinc status was assessed through analysis of serum, urine, hair, and diet records. Males (N=27) had greater systolic and pulse pressures than females (N=32). Multiple regression analysis suggested that males and higher caloric and dietary copper intakes were the predominant factors associated with higher systolic and diastolic pressures, whereas higher dietary zinc intakes were associated with lower pressures. Higher urine zinc excretion rates and serum zinc concentrations were associated with higher diastolic pressures. The sex variable was the strongest factor affecting pulse pressures, with males having higher pulse pressures. Serum zinc concentrations had an inverse relationship to pulse pressures. The data suggest that the weight/height index and age had a low association with blood pressure in this normotensive sample.  相似文献

Synopsis The toxicity of zinc to rainbow trout was determined and the 72 h median lethal concentration was found to be 2.00 mg l–1 in freshwater, hardness 7.50 mg l–1 as calcium. An insignificant increase in zinc concentration of internal tissues occurred in fish exposed to 1.52 mg l–1 in freshwater for 72 h. However, there was a significant uptake of zinc by gills and the body surface. Fish exposed to 10 mg l–1 zinc for 72 h in two-thirds sea water showed significant zinc uptake by liver, rectum and muscle, when compared to control fish. Drinking rate decreased from 1.43 to 0.26 ml kg–1 h–1 when zinc sulphate was added to freshwater. Trout adapted to two-thirds sea water showed no decrease in drinking, about 7 ml kg–1 h–1 when zinc was added to the water.  相似文献
