Summary The potential effects of multiple factors structuring certain larval amphibian communities were studied using a pen experiment in a natural pond. Potential factors (predation and competition from other species) were allowed to act in a stepwise fashion such that their relative importance could be evaluated. Based on a previous study, it was hypothesized that predation by Ambystoma salamander larvae on other larval amphibian species would be the most important factor. Survival of Ambystoma jeffersonianum salamander larvae and Rana sylvatica tadpoles was significantly depressed only by Ambystoma opacum predation. Survival of Ambystoma maculatum salamander larvae was significantly greater in the absence of both A. opacum and A. jeffersonianum predators. The virtual elimination of Hyla chrysoscelis larvae in all treatments also can be largely attributed to Ambystoma predation. Thus, Ambystoma predation was the dominant factor determining larval survival of four amphibian prey species in the experimental communities.  相似文献

1. Small cages (294cm2) containing unglazed clay quarry tiles were used to investigate the influence of periphytic algae on macroinvertebrate abundance in a Hong Kong stream. Algal biomass was manipulated by shading cages with plastic sheets. Individual cages were assigned to one of three treatment groups: unshaded, shaded and deeply shaded. Invertebrate densities and algal biomass within cages were monitored after 23, 37 and 65 days. 2. Multiple-regression analysis revealed that algal biomass, invertebrate morphospecies richness and total abundance declined with greater shading intensity. The responses of individual invertebrate taxa varied: some (especially Trichoptera) were unaffected by shading, whereas grazers (Baetidae, Psephenidae and Elmidae) declined as shading increased. 3. Significant regressions of the densities of individual taxa upon algal and detrital standing stocks in cages had positive slopes, but algal biomass increased during the study while detrital standing stocks declined. Abundance of invertebrates declined or remained rather stable over time. Density increases resulting from a positive association with algae were apparently offset by declines in abundance correlated with reductions in detritus. 4. Declines in algal biomass were associated with greater shading to which animals may respond directly. To uncouple the link between scarcity of algae and reduction of light intensity, the plastic covers on two groups of cages (deeply shaded and unshaded) which had been placed in the stream for 28 days were reversed so that cages which had been shaded became unshaded and vice versa. The cages were recovered on day 33, Only Coleoptera demonstrated a positive association with atgae inside cages; no relationship between population densities and algal biomass or light intensity was apparent for other taxa. However, the design may have been confounded by deposition of sediment in the cages (due to declining stream discharge) which reduced population densities of colonizers. 5. This study documents changes in invertebrate abundance and morphospecies richness in response periphyton and detritus standing stocks within patches. Summation of such responses may account for observed variations in benthic communities among Hong Kong streams which differ in the extent of shading by riparian vegetation.  相似文献

Little is known about periphyton community in Patagonia and the influence that urban development has on a particular water body. Lake Nahuel Huapi is located in a National Park with little industrial or agricultural activity in the basin, but it is influenced by urban discharges from San Carlos de Bariloche, a town of 80000 inhabitants located on its south shore. Variations in structure and dynamics of the periphyton community in Lake Nahuel Huapi were studied during 1 year, to examine the influence of urban discharges on this community. Periphyton samples were collected on the shoreline of the lake and evaluated for biomass (as chlorophyll a concentration) and cell density of the main algal groups, at sites with and without urban influence. Results indicated the major influence of pollution from urban sources on periphyton at the most impacted sites, as well as the effect of different local events at each site (degree of contamination, type of coast, wind exposure, etc.). Higher biomass and cell densities at contaminated sites were evident, but the variation of main algal groups through the year was similar in all the sites. Periphyton in Lake Nahuel Huapi proved to be an important bioindicator of urban impacts on this water body.  相似文献

Effects of the triazine herbicides simazine and terbutryn on total biovolume and community structure of haptobenthic periphytic algal communities within in situ marsh enclosures are described. Levels of biovolume inhibition in excess of 98% relative to an untreated control were observed at all levels of terbutryn tested (0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 mg l–1). No reduction in total biovolume was observed at 0.1 mg l–1 simazine, with increasing inhibition (to 98%) at 1.0 and 5.0 mg l–1. Following incidental enclosure flooding and removal of herbicide, increases in biovolume were observed in all but the highest treatment levels, with rates of colonization similar to that of the control.Pre-flood community structure of periphyton in simazine-treated enclosures was qualitatively similar to that of the control, while a small blue-green alga was abundant only in terbutryn-treated enclosures. After flooding, substratum colonization in most experimental enclosures was dominated by the diatom Cocconeis placentula, while this taxon accounted for about 25% of total biovolume on substrata from the control and 0.1 mg l–1 simazine enclosures. It is concluded that periphyton successional processes, which normally lead to the development of a complex 3-dimensional mat, may be averted by short herbicide exposures.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that species composition and persistence of phytoplankton communities in nutrient rich lowland rivers depends mainly on physical factors. The study aimed to analyse the effects of water discharge, temperature and chemistry on phytoplankton dynamic and species composition in the lowland reach of the eutrophic Po river (Italy). Both taxonomical and morpho-functional methods were used. True planktonic and tychoplanktic (i.e. detached taxa of benthic origin that remain in suspension) species were found, among which only a few taxa and functional groups prevailed. Diatoms were the most abundant, with a clear dominance of species either sensitive to the onset of water stratification or well adapted to turbid waters. Phytoplankton abundance, biomass and chlorophyll-a followed similar trends, attaining the highest values in summer, at low discharge rates. Correlation and multivariate analysis revealed that the development of a stable phytoplankton community was mainly controlled by water discharge rates. Namely, changes in water flow rates induced major variations in the community structure. The seasonal succession of phytoplankton assemblages was also related to water temperature and dissolved reactive silica availability to some extent overlapping flow effects.  相似文献

The standing crop of benthic and planktonic algae in the Moruya River, Australia, was, in general, low compared with values given for northern hemisphere rivers. Diatoms always accounted for more than 90% of the algae on the sediments with the most common species being typical of holarctic flora. The relative abundance of each of six predominant taxa was similar at the three sampling localities and did not show marked seasonal variation. However, Gomphonema spp. contributed a relatively greater number in the downstream area whereas Cocconeis placentula Ehr. was comparatively more abundant upstream. The highest standing crop (1.47 × 106 cells/cm2) was found downstream and in the calmest part of the river between January and March, coincident with maximum water temperatures. A true phytoplankton succession comprising filamentous chlorophytes, Scenedesmus, Melosira varians Ag., Dactylococcopsis, Eudorina and Merismopedia was observed at the most downstream site during the spring and summer, with a maximum standing crop of 126.7 × 103 cells/litre being attained in December. The gut of larval lampreys > 100 mm contained large numbers (44,000–525,000 cells) of algae. Scenedesmus and Dactylococcopsis occurred much more frequently in the gut than in either the sediment or water, but the reverse was true for filamentous algae.  相似文献

Choricystis (Trebouxiphyceae, Chlorophyta) is considered a very common member of the freshwater picoplankton. We have established a culture collection from Itasca State Park (ISP), Minnesota, and Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), North Dakota, that includes many Choricystis isolates. We examined 109 Choricystis isolates from ISP and 19 isolates from ANWR using PCR‐RFLP of the rbcL gene. Twelve types for ISP and 7 types forANWR were distinguished by this technique. Sequence analysis revealed additional diversity within some of the RFLP types. Moreover, none of the Choricystis isolates from ANWR possessed rbcL sequences identical to any isolate from ISP. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequence data revealed at least 2 major lineages. These results indicate that Choricystis is much more diverse than previously thought. The objective of this study was to investigate nutrient limitation of algal abundance in Anderson-Cue Lake, a softwater clear oligotrophic lake in north-central Florida. Nutrient diffusing clay pots and cylindrical enclosures were used in the field to test effects of different combinations of nitrogen, phosphorus, silica, and carbon on algal standing crop and composition of periphytic and planktonic algae, respectively. Effects of nutrient enrichment on periphytic algae were examined in two studies conducted 31 May – 8 July and 10 June – 15 July 1991. Nutrient effects on planktonic algae were examined in one study from 13 June – 1 July 1991. Planktonic and periphytic algal biovolume was significantly higher (p<0.05) when nitrogen and carbon were added in combination than with treatments without nitrogen, carbon, or nitrogen and carbon. Treatments with nitrogen and carbon combined resulted in lower algal diversity and dominance by coccoid green algae andScenedesmus. Results indicate that carbon and nitrogen can be limiting factors to algal growth in Anderson-Cue Lake and possibly other lakes of similar water quality.  相似文献

Mangroves in rapidly expanding Southeast Asian river deltas form floristically simple zones dominated by a few highly regenerative species adaptable or tolerant to rapid sedimentation and extensive river flooding.

Abstract

The size class distribution, community composition and spatial structure of five representative mangrove forests in the rapidly expanding Cimanuk river delta on Java were determined. These deltaic forests are species-poor (eight true mangrove species) and spatially segregated into three distinct floristic zones: (1) a fringing, low intertidal zone co-dominated by Avicennia marina and A. officinalis, with less abundant Bruguiera parviflora, Rhizophora apiculata, and R. mucronata; (2) a zone transitional between the low and mid intertidal in which Avicennia and Rhizophora spp. co-dominate; and (3) a mid intertidal zone dominated by R. mucronata and R. apiculata. Numerically dominated by seedlings (52,500–73,500 seedlings ha?1) and saplings (5,268–5,660 saplings ha?1), all five forests are relatively young and actively regenerating. Positive correlations of tree stem diameter and tree height with soil organic matter and P concentrations, salinity, the soil C/N ratio, pH, and silt/clay composition highlight the importance of soil factors in sustaining forest growth. The low diversity and relative structural simplicity of these rapidly growing and regenerating forests may be attributed to adaptation or tolerance to flooding and the rapid sedimentation and seaward expansion of the delta.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns (i.e., December 1986, and April and October 1987) in benthic macroinfaunal abundance, distribution, and taxa composition at 19 sites in Perdido Bay, AL/FL, are evaluated to assess the relative importance of environmental factors as determinants of community structure. A total of 46 taxa from five phyla were collected with diver-held bottom corers. Polychaetes were numerically dominant followed by crustaceans. Seventeen taxa co-occurred in samples during all three study periods. Maximum animal densities and taxa richness showed no statistically significant bay-wide seasonal pattern, however, a bay-wide trend was detected where these response parameters tended to be greater in April than December or October. Deeper upper bay stations were depauperate during December and October. Low dissolved oxygen (DO) largely explained the depauperate pattern. Mean taxa richness per core(10 cm dia.) ranged from 0.0 to 5.0, 1.2 to 4.6, and0.0 to 4.4 in December, April and October, respectively. Mean densities ranged from zero to 368,0 to 960, and 0 to 430 individuals per 0.1 m2 in December, April, and October, respectively. Results of a three-season statistical regression model indicated that DO deficiency was a primary determinant of taxa richness (partial R 2: 0.27) but was less important in explaining animal densities (partialR 2: 0.16). For December, when additional environmental variables were measured, DO was supplanted by weight loss on ignition (R 2: 0.24)and the sediment C:N ratio (R 2: 0.44) as highest explanatory factors for taxa richness and density, respectively. Application of a benthic index of environmental condition indicated wide-spread ecological stress on the benthic macroinfaunal assemblages. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In October 1988 a bloom of Gyrodinium cf. aureolum was recordedalong a transect across the continental shelf reaching celldensities of 1300 ml–1 and chlorophyll a concentrationsup to 16 µg 1–1. The bloom was restricted to a nutrient-richthin surface layer of 10 m depth at the beginning of seasonalpycnocline. Hydrological conditions showed a particular salinitydistribution. The phytoplankton community was dominated by G.cf. aureolum but the coexisting flora presented a great diversity.UV-absorbing pigments were recorded in the community.  相似文献

The distribution of seagrasses in a 15-ha area in the mid-Indian River lagoon on Florida's central east coast was mapped. Halodule wrightii Aschers. dominated in shallow (< 0.4 m) and Syringodium filiforme Kutz. in deeper water (> 0.5 m). Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König occurred as scattered patches. Areal coverage of monospecific stands of the three major seagrasses was: Syringodium 35%, Halodule 14%, Thalassia 6% and bare sand 21%. Mixed species stands, mostly Syringodium with Hallodule, covered 25% of the total study area. Above-ground seagrass biomass was maximum in summer (June–July) and minimum in late winter (February–March). Summer maxima ranged from 60 g dry wt. m?2 for Syringodium to ~ 300 g dry wt. m?2 for Thalassia, with Halodule intermediate at 160 g dry wt. m?2.Because distribution of unattached benthic macroalgae (“drift algae”), primarily Gracilaria spp., was highly aggregated, aggregations were first mapped, followed by stratified quadrat sampling in order to estimate total drift algal abundance. In April 1982, high-density patches covering a few hectares averaged 409 g dry wt. m?2. At maximum abundance, averaged over the entire 15-ha mapped area, drift algal biomass was 164 g dry wt. m?2; mean above-ground seagrass biomass was only 49 g dry wt. m?2. Other large expanses of the lagoon had similar accumulations of drift algae; densities of some accumulations exceeded 15 000 g dry wt. m?2. Year-to-year variability of seagrass and drift algal abundance was high and may be related to variations in light levels.Drift algae harbor high densities of animals and at times may be quantitatively more important locally than seagrasses in terms of habitat, nutrient dynamics and primary production.  相似文献

Southern Patagonia’s landscape hosts several semi-natural habitats, traditionally used for sheep production, such as Mulguraea tridens and Lepidophyllum cupressiforme scrublands. Mulguraea scrublands are managed via mechanical shredding to remove shrubs and increase grass availability, alternating with structural-retention strips. We analyzed the influence of structural-retention management (with cut and retention strips) in Mulguraea scrublands with regards to above-ground arthropod community structure, as well as differences between the two natural scrubland types. We worked in Santa Cruz Province (Argentina) with pitfall traps during two summers in the first 2 years after mechanical shredding. Richness, abundance, occurrence frequency, Shannon–Wiener diversity and Pielou evenness indices, and similarity among assemblages were evaluated using univariate and multivariate statistical tests. Complementarily, we described vegetation ground cover and microclimate. We collected 3279 individuals from 38 species belonging to Insecta and Arachnida Classes. Shannon–Wiener diversity and Pielou evenness indices, as well as the overall assemblages, differed significantly between managed cut strips and natural Mulguraea scrublands, mainly due to the loss and introduction of species from surrounding environments; abundance also differed in the first sampling year compared to the second year. Likewise, managed retention strips allowed the partial maintenance of arthropod community structure and had a microclimate that was similar to natural Mulguraea scrublands, although assemblages in managed cut and retention strips became more similar among themselves in the second sampling year. On the other hand, richness, abundance and assemblage of both natural scrubland types differed significantly, with 87?% more indicator species in Mulguraea than in Lepidophyllum scrublands. Greater dissimilarity occurred between both natural scrubland types in dryer years, which could be related with an El Niño Southern Oscillation event. If arthropod community structure changes prove stable over time, mechanical shredding with structural-retention management would allow for an increase in the sheep carrying capacity, while reducing impacts to the arthropod community, thus providing a viable compromise between productivity and conservation in a fragile arid environment. More studies are necessary to evaluate long term changes in above-ground arthropod community structure of scrublands in arid zones of southern Patagonia.  相似文献

Periphyton plays an important role in stream ecology, and can be sensitive to macroinvertebrate grazers, near-bed current velocity, and bedload abrasion. We manipulated conditions to examine influences on periphytic accrual in the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory Outdoor StreamLab in Minneapolis, MN, USA. Macroinvertebrate grazers were excluded from 27 of 65 clay tiles using electric pulses. We examined periphytic biomass accrual as a function of grazer presence, sampling run, and near-bed current velocity using ANCOVA. We found significant temporal differences between sampling runs but no significant effect of grazer presence. Along with a strong association between bedload transport rates and mean periphytic biomass, our results suggest that grazers are relatively unimportant in stream systems with high levels of physical disturbance from floods and associated sand bedload. However, the interaction between grazer presence and velocity was marginally significant. Regression analyses showed no relation between velocity and periphyton in the absence of grazers but a negative relation when grazers were present, suggesting that mechanical dislodgement of periphyton by grazers may increase with velocity. We conclude that grazers can have subtle effects on periphyton, particularly in streams with high bedload transport rates.  相似文献

The present-day Rhine alluvial hardwood forest (Querco-Ulmetum minoris, Issler 24) in the upper Rhine valley (France/Germany) is comprised of three vegetation units, one still flooded by calm waters (F) and the two others unflooded, one for 30 years (UF30) (after the river canalisation) and the other for about 130 years (UF130) (after river straightening and embankment work in the middle nineteenth century). In the three stands, species composition, structure and diversity of vegetation and nutrient content of mature leaf, leaf litter and soil have been studied. Fungi (Macromycetae) were only studied in two stands (F and UF130). The intensity of nutrient recycling was exemplified by comparing the chemical composition of rainwater, flood, throughfall, mature leaf, leaf litter, soil and groundwater in two of these stands (F and UF30).The elimination of floods has caused a change in floristic composition, tree density and plant diversity. Tree density was higher in the two unflooded stands and was related to a large increase in sapling (< 6 cm dbh) density more than to a change of stem (> 6 cm dbh) density. Sapling density increased 2 times and three times in the UF30 and the UF130 respectively, whereas the stem density increased only 12% in the first stand and decreased 29% in the second one. The saprophytic macromycete communities have been supplemented with mycorrhizal species. Leaf litter production was slightly greater in the flooded (4.44 T ha-1 yr-1) than in the two unflooded stands ( 3.72 T ha-1 yr-1). Foliar N level is twice as high in the flooded stands in spite of an opposite soil status. P level decreased in soil and leaves with the duration of isolation and was at the same level in the groundwater in two stands (F and UF30). K, Mg and Ca contents of green leaf and leaf litter were high due to the geochemistry of the Rhine substrate (calcareous gravels and pebbles) and similar in all the stands studied, even though there are large inputs of these three elements by floods. Moreover we showed that the groundwater chemistry reflected the variations of nutrient inputs and thus could be a good indicator of the functioning of an alluvial ecosystem and of its change as a result of human activities. The restoration of floods in hardwood forest contributes to the preservation of alluvial vegetational structure and composition, the stimulation of biological processes and a better plant mineral nutrition and water supply.  相似文献

Pattern in ecological communities - the distribution, abundance and diversity of species - depends on a complex interplay between large - and local-scale processes. Large-scale variation in factors such as environmental stress, dispersal or productivity sets the stage for local-scale ecological processes such as predation or competition. Until recently, most research focused on local-scale explanations of community pattern. Current models attempt to integrate the role of individual large-scale factors with local-scale processes. This trend will continue, with increased effort to understand the specific means by which large-scale factors cause variation among communities.  相似文献
